  • jenhegna Dec 17 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1) the more relevant and authentic the learning can be...the more clear the WHY. However, you still need good assessments of those learning targets! #mnlead

Nope. Just mindful minutes at best! #mnlead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:12 PM EST
A2 Posting learning targets is a good strategy. This helps clearly identify the instructional goal. However, there is a fair question if that really gives the ‘why’ to students. #mnlead
  • sarahdateechur Dec 17 @ 8:12 PM EST
A2. I usually lead with that. Maybe also ask them why it might be important to them #mnlead

  • clmaxa Dec 17 @ 8:13 PM EST
No reason why we can't include why with our learning targets. Nice catch Matt! #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:13 PM EST
I was there too! How much fun was that? #mnlead
    In reply to @mahillmann, @clmaxa
  • cdhagen Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2 A well developed essential/guiding question should help Ss understand the why of the lesson/unit #mnlead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
This is a smart move…asking students to make connections to the content makes it meaningful to them. #mnlead
    • sarahdateechur Dec 17 @ 8:12 PM EST

  • jenhegna Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1.1) i have seen very authentic lessons that were chalk full of 21st-century skills. But S couldn't clearly identify the target. 2 Teaching sins. Too much hands on vs.too much surface level learning. #mnlead
  • markemoran Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
Indeed. Learning targets are more the "what," #mnlead
    • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:12 PM EST

  • cyndy8412 Dec 17 @ 8:14 PM EST
.@sarahdateechur I agree 100%, I personally always need to know WHY? so I always made sure my students understood the "Why" as well #mnlead

      In reply to @clmaxa, @bretdom
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2 I think the why goes beyond us "telling" them why they should know something. If they can "see" the why, the impact on learning is immense! #mnlead

  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:15 PM EST
Authenticity. That is the key. What makes me like this? What makes me want to dig in? #mnlead
    In reply to @jenhegna
  • sarahdateechur Dec 17 @ 8:16 PM EST
Definitely Cyndy! This is so true so they see the purpose #mnlead
    In reply to @cyndy8412
  • cyndy8412 Dec 17 @ 8:16 PM EST
.@bretdom I would always open up a lesson to the students by asking them "why" it usually brought about an interesting conversation! #mnlead
    • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2 I think the why goes beyond us "telling" them why they should know something. If they can "see" the why, the impact on learning is immense! #mnlead

And some ‘why’ can be a bit ethereal in some content areas. The “why” sometimes needs to be bigger than the here and now reason for learning the content. #mnlead

A3: When a leader begins to create change in any organization, he/she must ask "Would this continue if I weren't here?" #mnlead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:17 PM EST
Can you clarify your intent of “sustainable” in this context? I am assuming you are talking about instructional systems but want to verify. #mnlead
    In reply to @NellieHerch
  • townsleyaj Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST
Join us in about 45 minutes for a great conversation about our systems matching our student needs! #IAedChat #MNlead #WISchat
  • clmaxa Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3: We are working towards alignment between all initiatives, so that the Service Center isn't doing things that works against what our schools really need. It's about pruning and prioritization. It is a work in progress, but we are working on it! #mnlead
    • NellieHerch Dec 17 @ 8:15 PM EST
Q3:  What are you doing to create sustainable systems in school and how are you ensuring the success of these changes? #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3 That is a good question. We need to set up systems, not people. If the people have knowledge and can implement, we can do great things. We have to use some level of assessment to check how this is working. #mnlead
  • sarahdateechur Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST
Hi #RJLeagueChat and #mnlead ! Thanks for the convo. Early morning tomorrow so I have to bounce. Have a great night!
  • jenhegna Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3) Schools are moving to standards-based grading. Middle School is making the move next year. Will be K-8 SBG. Developing 4pt scales that continue to "deepen" learning. Its a work in progress! #mnlead
  • cyndy8412 Dec 17 @ 8:18 PM EST

  • markemoran Dec 17 @ 8:19 PM EST
A3: For change to be sustainable, it can't rely on one person who has all the "answers" - it must be the product of collaboration & consensus, facilitated by a person who asks great questions & develops eager buy-in. #mnlead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:19 PM EST

  • mrsmduke Dec 17 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: honesty. straight answers. "Why do we have to like reading?" you don't have to love it, but you have to be good at it. My dream is that you love it, but my goal is that you are good at it. #mnlead
  • jenhegna Dec 17 @ 8:20 PM EST
Can you explain this a little more? #mnlead
    In reply to @clmaxa
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:20 PM EST
Hi Marie! Welcome back!!! Glad you are here. #mnlead
    In reply to @mrsmduke
  • mahillmann - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 Systems sustainability requires connection to shared vision/strategic plan, clear benefit for students, appropriate supports during the first years of implementation, & ongoing high quality professional development. #mnlead
  • mrsmduke Dec 17 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: I am building media programs from the ground up in a school that has never before had a media center. They're sustainable because they make sense, help students, and make an impact. #mnlead
  • AnnDettmann Dec 17 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3. Identifying leaders that can take on the leading! Lots of standards work and assessments now. #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:22 PM EST
And when we think about deepening learning, we have to ask ourselves about the work. Is the DOK deep enough? Are we getting beyond the 1-2 levels? #mnlead
    In reply to @jenhegna
  • clmaxa Dec 17 @ 8:22 PM EST
If you've ever read Michael Fullan's book, "Coherence", that's the framework we are using to focus on the things that matter most. In our district we do so many good things, but at some point, too many good things is detrimental. I'm trying to align efforts and planning. #mnlead
    • jenhegna Dec 17 @ 8:20 PM EST
Can you explain this a little more? #mnlead

    • markemoran Dec 17 @ 8:19 PM EST
A3: For change to be sustainable, it can't rely on one person who has all the "answers" - it must be the product of collaboration & consensus, facilitated by a person who asks great questions & develops eager buy-in. #mnlead

What have you found to be the best methods to identify and build up those key leaders? #mnlead
    In reply to @AnnDettmann
  • clmaxa Dec 17 @ 8:23 PM EST
It is very difficult, but focusing on the most needed and impactful initiatives, there are certainly things we do that we can stop doing. #mnlead
    • dbenaitis Dec 17 @ 8:22 PM EST
I am sure it has been difficult at time to "prune" but as you know ... a total must! Just cause we have always done it, isn't good enough anymore

    In reply to @mahillmann
  • bretdom - Moderator Dec 17 @ 8:25 PM EST

A3 I think collaborative learning for PD is one thing that is creating sustainability #mnlead
  • clmaxa Dec 17 @ 8:26 PM EST
Agreed Matt. Part of this is defining what an initiative is, versus what is just part of our daily job. Also, we have Ss with needs all over the board, so as leaders we need to be clear about whose responsibilities are whose. Ts can't be everything to every student #mnlead
