Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Lets start the #UDLchat with your name, state and the oldest item in your refrigerator. I am going to go look now for my oldest item. Ron Rogers from Ohio.
Excited to be a part of the #udlchat tonight! I had to take a hiatus in the spring but excited for the inspiration and #UDL excitement that is sure to be generated here tonight!
Christine, MA oldest item in my fridge is probably a jar of capers that for some reason I saved & transferred to my new fridge when the old one broke. 🤷♀️ #UDLChat
Jana Nicol from New Brunswick, Canada. Oldest item in my fridge is a bottle of raspberry vinegar that was gifted to me longer ago than I care to admit lol #udlchat
A1 I had designed settle options for grammar (syntax) in my classroom. Ss had 6 different options, so much to do, all with different pathways. Waaaay overplanned. On first day, Ss didn’t have enough room in class to accomplish tasks. Meticulous plans devolved to chaos! #UDLchat
A1.5 I was extremely embarrassed. I cut back two of them for the rest of the day to make space. I didn’t want to even do them again the next day as planned, but committed to showing Ss it’s okay to fail and try again. Scaled them back and had a successful week! #UDLchat
A1- hmmm... Read, highlighted, underlined and wrote notes in the margins of all my UDL books, then realized they belonged to my old employer...I had to leave them behind. #udlchat
A1. I attempted a training in Content vs Method standards that didn’t go as well as I planned. I reflected on the parts that worked and revamped. I was told struggle is good so I’m glad for the encouragement. #UDLchat
A1: Giving choices to Ss flopped when they all chose the “easiest” rather than put in effort to be creative and take risks. Ss not used to leading their learning. Needs to be part of whole school culture #udlchat

A1 my common stumble is offering choices that I would like rather than choices based on the variability in the room. So I’m offering choices but sometimes they are not options for people. #UDLchat

A1: I think one of the biggest flops for UDL is the old problem of over-analyzing what you are trying to do and ending up in "paralysis by analysis" mode. Only way to overcome it is to remember why you are attempting it and nothing is perfect at 1st. #udlchat
Q1: Tried a QR code quest and it was a big flop! Questions were strange and not well thought out as I originally thought & tech didn’t work for all. Great opportunity to admit my errors, model reflection & talk about how I would change things the next time. #udlchat
Stations are where I often struggle too! I get big extravagant ideas and add a lot and it either ends up being too difficult (not enough scaffolding) or too many steps to accomplish quickly enough. #udlchat
A1: When I 1st learned about #UDL I was so excited to start adding more choices...waaaay too many choices & realized I was actually creating barriers for some Ss. Oops! I recovered by talking @AllisonAposey ear off & figuring out how to be more #intentional#UDLChat
Kelli from Indiana joining in late! #UDLchat Oldest thing in fridge is currently unidentifiable inside a small plastic container ha ha Hi @Ronbrogers !

A1: Biggest #UDL flop? Spending too much time filling out checklists to make sure I was using the guidelines in my practice. Kicked my addiction to checklists and shifted the focus to creating engaging learning experiences for students #udlchat
A1. I doubted my understanding of the guidelines so instead of moving forward I read everything around UDL. I’m feeling the power after this weeks @CAST_UDL conference though 😀 #udlchat

I often model tech flops (which happen a lot) as learning experiences and opportunities for troubleshooting. Drawing on the expertise in the room as well. Sometimes by accident, sometimes by design, both options are fun! #udlchat

A1:2 Not intentionally using UDL when planning a mentoring PLC for our new teachers led to decreased engagement. UDL for all learners not just students #udlchat
A1: Misjudging background knowledge & not building enough background because I lose sight of where other people might be at times with content. Need to slow down sometimes! #udlchat

A2: learning inventories (as well as real talk about their limitations), @BookCreatorApp as an option for expression, and organizational features on google drive I want to teach my Ss #UDLchat
A2: jumping in late, got caught up cleaning everything before school officially starts. Planning to share more about @itslearning options with teachers this year. Wanting it to become a "get to" not just a "have to." #UDLChat
A2: I am SO excited to use 3D printing in a collaborative Assistive Tech #makerspace, Techapalooza where we explore #VR, @SkoogMusic, and more. Not to mention the usual text to speech, iPad, and Chromebook tools for #a11y#UDLchat
A1: Big #UDL flop... My first attempt to explain the "brain" of affective, recognition & strategic & quickly realizing I'll never be a David Rose #UDLchat
This can be super effective- especially if you show them how they were just UDL'd. They see that you chose certain activities because you were planning for variabillity! #udlchat
A2. Ive found and or created a variety of UDL lesson plan templates to share with the Ts and a few videos to work with them on calibrating UDL lessons. #UDLchat
A2: We're planning to use Google docs for weekly reflection. I'll ask our Learners to share their document with me so I can watch and guide their progress. #UDLchat
A3 I think it’s important to constantly have a feedback loop, wherein Ss can give the teacher feedback (with the option of anonymous feedback). I’m looking forward to other people’s thoughts, because this is something with which I struggle quite a bit! #UDLchat
A3: it's not really an Essential Question if it's not essential to your learners...so have a clear goal, but be flexible in how you accomplish it. What's essential for us, isn't always essential to them. #UDLChat
A2.5 no tech option would be bringing back tool boxes I introduced it the spring and giving access to student items by taking doors off of half of my cabinets (good to ask first) #udlchat

A3: Learning the importance of our Learners asking questions. We start by modeling asking questions and take a back seat when they begin asking. #UDLchat
A2: I also plan to use @CAST_UDL awesome @padlet that they have created! Fantastic resources for PD and inspiring teachers for planning with UDL in mind. #udlchat
We offer our HS Math Learners Exit Tickets as Google Forms so they get feedback before leaving our classroom. Immediate feedback is so beneficial. #UDLchat
I do too. How do we teach learners to advocate for the kind of feedback they need in order to grow? I can do that with adults in my grad classes, but with younger learners I am looking for better ways to involve them in that process. #udlchat
A2: We have two schools for the Deaf, so we currently are taking our "out-of-the-box" curriculum and making it fully accessible for those who have ASL as their first language. This way it is accessible to all, K-12! #udlchat
A3: this year as we begin with a novel I’m going to ask students what they want to get from our study together. I know where I want to go, but where do they want to go in our learning. #udlchat [gif of the basic question words]
A4 honestly I’m inspired by how accepting and open my Ss are compared to how I was at their age. They blow me away with their willingness to include others and are accepting of differences. The kids are alright. :) #UDLchat
A2: I plan to start using equatio as a way for students to share their thinking. I also hope to be teaching into using algebra tiles as a manipulative option (both physical and online) #UDLchat
A3: Where do learners see themselves in the topic? What are they excited about? What bits of information can be shared to build background, curiosity & excitement for learning? How do the learners want to get there?#udlchat
A4: just finished up a week of PD and was struck by some positive insights my participants had about some of my work when all I could see were the faults. It was inspiring to maybe not be quite so hard on myself. #UDLChat
A2: I also plan to use @CAST_UDL awesome @padlet that they have created! Fantastic resources for PD and inspiring teachers for planning with UDL in mind. #udlchat
A4: We're inspired by our Learners when they take charge, ask to lead our learning, or feel safe enough to take the board saying "I'm lost so I'm driving this next question". #Thrilled#Inspired#UDLchat
#udlchat A4: My Ss inspire me everyday! They overcome so many obstacles! I love seeing them ask questions and help others! We've worked on perseverance for a couple years and I am seeing it! ❤💜
A2: Building classroom community, frequent movement breaks, flexible seating, visual schedule for the whole class, exit slips, goal board (outcomes posted in student-friendly language for each subject), lots of learning games #udlchat
A4: I am inspired by our toddlers and preschoolers - their inherent ability to pause in the moment and absorb the world around them. #udlchat#whatwecanlearnfromkids
Our family just arrived back from Sanibel Island tonight at 8:30pm for the #udlchat and I know others are doing the same. THANKS AGAIN. It was excellent.
Parameters can help. Let Ss know what you’re trying to improve and ask for feedback on just that. Or maybe sit down with a couple of Ss before you prep something. Let their insights inform the design then get their feedback afterwards #UDLchat

A4: Students inspire me by their very nature. Their curiosity. The responsibility of ensuring they are heard, have a meaningful and fun experience. #UDLchat
A4. I’m inspired everyday by how they can surprise me & what they can achieve when given the opportunity. Feel some days they taught me more than Intjiyght them #udlchat
A4: I am inspired by the RESILIENCE of so many of my college students-despite multiple and simultaneous barriers often beyond their circumstances, they journey forward. #udlchat#emotionalresilience

Yes! Feedback is key... When learners do their HW and don't get feedback or just get a grade that is black/white, good/bad --> iterations, process-oriented learning, and growth isn't happening #GiveQualityFeedback#UDLChat
