Karen Smith principal at St. John Regional In Frederick. Catching up on a little bit of everything is a great way to spend a snow day! Another one tomorrow??#AoBEdChat
A1: Always impressed with the #STEM ideas @MaryJoBroderic1 brings to the table at @SFASchoolBalt! In MS Sci & STEM Club, she shows a real passion for STEM. Teacher enthusiasm I really feel is the secret ingredient. (Ex: CNA visit, @Ozobot & STEM Club) #AOBedchat
A1: Dr. Dupuis from @notredameofMD is my #STEMspiration. She inspired me as an educator to fall in love with teaching STEM the right way for my students. Collaboration and true integration is a team effort and it begins with us as educators. #AOBedchat@StAugustineElem
A1 - just knowing that it grows their creativity and critical thinking skills and helps them prepare for future job skills is reason enough for me. #AoBEdChat
A1: Our kid's future is what inspires me to bring STEM to life to the students. Rapid changing technology will provide opportunities we can't even dream off. Preparing critical thinkers and problem solvers will allow them to grow into contributing members of society. #AOBedchat
#AoBEdChat Kristin Urbanski, fifth grade teacher at Resurrection-St. Paul School. My favorite things about a snow day are walking my dog in the snow and catching up on some reading.

@MrMillerSAS does a great job with middle school STEM challenge at SAS! I'm always inspired to see how our students approach the challenges and work together in such creative ways! #aobedchat@StAugustineElem
#AobEdChat A1: My wonderful intermediate team at RSPS inspires me to be a better teacher in every way, especially in STEM. Nothing like educators who motivate and support each other!
A2: Engineering Design Challenges are my favorite. Finding a challenge that extends a unit we are learning in math or science is a fun way for students to collaborate and persevere through a rigorous task. #AOBedchat@StAugustineElem
I thought my students had a lot of fun calculating the surface area of tissue boxes in the 6th grade and then covering the boxes with the appropriate amount of wrapping paper..... they are still groaning about it in 8th grade, though! #AOBedchat
A2: ECEd lends itself perfectly to STEM exploration. Free choice centers, makerspace, etc. encourages Ss to engage in exploration daily in the PK and K classrooms. Providing lots of exploration opens the door to STEM from an early age. We love @Magnatiles !! #aobedchat
We love having you as a collaborator! You always have good wisdom nuggets to share. Thanks for joining chat. 🤗 blessings to you, Dr. Joshua Smith and Loyola University Maryland Team #AOBedchat

I get to work with great Ts who see the 4Cs as a channel for STEM. Ts and Ss are looking for relevance and authentic resources to help Ss truly see THEIR possibilities. #AOBedchat
It is exciting to see students engaged in learning that is authentic and relevant to solving real-world problems. They aren't learning with the hope of using it some day. They are using the learning today! #AoBEdChat Q1
A2: Impromptu engineering design that is functionally play is huge for my class. During an indoor recess a few weeks ago, some of my enterprising students created a whole hockey game complete with goals, sticks, and a puck made out of paper. #AOBedchat
A3: The more opportunities that are provided the more confident the students become at problem solving, collaborating and critical thinking. #AOBedchat
A3: Perseverance is a cornerstone of STEM education. Continued exposure and support helps students experience success and motivates them to continue to try. #AOBedchat@StAugustineElem
A3: Make sure that we educate our teachers that they are ALL STEM teachers so the mindset is set for the students that they can do anything their teacher asks of them.
#AOBedchat
A3- Finding an activity/interest of theirs. Try to develop a project around that. If that fails, turn it in STEAM project- have them focus on aesthetics or create descriptions. #AoBEdChat
@AOBedchat A2: I get inspired seeing my teachers take a creative approach to STEM intervention across the grade-levels. A hands-on approach to learning= learning moments for students
A2: I have also had an excellent experience with resources from Juli Cannon Science, formerly NGSS Nerd, on TpT. Check her out for hands on science experiences linked to standards. #AOBedchat
This is the beauty of STEM. Because it’s transdiscplinary there is likely to be an element of something that appeals. We know what the ltrs stand for, but we can’t let interpretation limit the possibilities. #AOBEDchat
It is about teaching students about a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. A growth mindset says you can learn whatever you put your mind to. Carol Dweck give examples in her book of people that have succeeded because of that mindset. #AoBEdChat Q3

A3: It is imperative that we model in word&action that it is okay to make mistakes when it comes to teaching- to include STEM integrated lessons. Students are observed and judged all the time today w social media. We must create safe, learning environments for inquiry. #AOBedchat
A3: I like to tie in read alouds that promote STEM to help students begin to see how STEM is all around us. Pinterest is filled with great boards with STEM Picture Books including: https://t.co/LaTOeQ5dik#aobedchat@StAugustineElem
A3: Encourage the process! It’s so encouraging for all involved (Ts and Ss) for the teacher to say, “You’ve made an excellent start. Where can we go from here?” #AOBedchat
@AOBedchat Q3: For those students that are nervous about STEM inquiry-I try to keep the focus on the “doing” and less on say -the math/physics part at first. When we are excited -they are excited: earthquake proof structure build !#AoBEdChat
I watched students work with engineers and construction professionals to transform the campus of their school by designing and building an amphitheater/outdoor classroom. That is a literal example of 'leaving a place better than you found it.' #AOBedchat Q2
A3: We also need to encourage them when they fail. Failure is part of the process and key to success. I tell my students that Fail is First Attempt In Learning. #AOBedchat

A4: While it’s not necessarily a STEM resource, I like the book “Messy Maths” by Juliet Robinson (she also wrote “Dirty Teaching” about outdoor learning). These books have lots of great ideas to pull math and science together while promoting hands-on learning in ECEd

A4: Nothing specific comes to mind, but I am constantly getting ideas from the teaching community on Instagram. I can’t count how many times I’ve tried something new in my classroom because of the teachers I follow. #AOBedchat
Oh yeah. Had an elementary teacher had Ss create contraptions to get Rapunzel out of her tower. Had Ss list everything she might have in the room, got the supplies, and let them go at it. #AoBEdChat
A4: https://t.co/gSo0nmk8kg has some fun STEM activities/ideas for Early Childhood – lots of fun pattern block and Lego ideas! I really like the Lego and block center task cards :-)

Q5: Dr. Cindy Moss, @stemboss , defines STEM as “Students and Teachers Energizing Minds. All teachers are STEM teachers”. Integrating technology in all content areas is a great way to STEMify a lesson. What presentation or media tools do you utilize with your Ss? #AoBEdChat
#AoBEdChat Q2: Wonders (our reading program) and EnVisions (our math program) provide excellent opportunities for fun, engaging, interactive learning in the classroom! Our new interactive white boards are wonderful @StAugustineElem@DBallWriter@MrMillerSAS

Q6: Collaboration in STEM is essential not only for our students, but for us as teachers. How can we model and use STEM collaboration among content area teachers for our students? #AoBEdChat
A5: We have been using @DiscoveryEd tools including but not limited to the Science and Social Studies Techbook for over 5 years. It is our primary "Go To" for teachers and students. We are also a GAFE school and use Google Apps and Classroom in most subject areas. #AOBedchat
Q6: Collaboration in STEM is essential not only for our students, but for us as teachers. How can we model and use STEM collaboration among content area teachers for our students?
A6: Common team planning for interdisciplinary planning is absolutely essential for STEM collaboration. It is so needed, but almost impossible to find enough PD time for the teachers. #AOBedchat
A6: @StAugustineElem ms team collaborates on interdisciplinary projects monthly. We just finished a Pollution unit and are now beginning an Extreme Weather unit with our students. We meet and co-plan and then use our STEM block Fridays to work with students #AOBedchat
A3: Make sure that we educate our teachers that they are ALL STEM teachers so the mindset is set for the students that they can do anything their teacher asks of them.

Q6: We just did a STEM expo I think it was important for my students to see our team working together on the organization/planning -teacher teams that work well together are excellent models for students. Let your students see you collaborating! #AoBEdChat@AOBedchat
A7: Focus on social justice and the impact of our choices on the environment and surrounding community. Catholic identity is our cornerstone we must also model our faith through our interaction with students and how we treat our coworkers and collaborate as a team. #AOBedchat

A7: The RSPS middle school religion department is great at integrating STEM into the routine. Some of the students’ biggest projects come out of religion class. #AOBedchat
A7: We focus a lot in K about the gifts God has given us and how we can use those gifts to help others, encourage others and support others. Working in a group on a STEM project is a great way to reinforce this :-) @StAugustineElem#aobedchat
Adding the art and the religion pieces are relatively easy. Our new religion curriculum has a Catholic Art piece with it and creating/problem solving can be applied. It's all in the teachers mindset- seeing how they bring STEM to each lesson they teach. #AOBedchat
