A1. Family engagement means including families into the process of education. Empowering stakeholders with a voice in the education of the kids. #mtedchat.
A1: Family engagement in our area is definitely defined as "community engagment". Our families are very diverse in structure. Many have had negative experiences with school. We build bridges and keep everything as positive and collaborative as possible. #mtedchat#ruraled

Yes... completely agree. Many stay home and are isolated because they don't really understand what an open and inviting school can be... Need to create opportunities and reach families where they live... #mtedchat
Definitely!!! We also find that the more personal the invitation, the better the probability of engagement... Home visits, calls home, social media... #mtedchat
A2) Our back to school night is in October. We structure literacy activities to help Ps understand what reading looks like in K. Ss get to guide their Ps through these tasks. #mtedchat
A2. One of my greatest successes manifested as an individual standing in the corner scowling with their arms folded. We thanked him for coming and invited him back next month. At least he was in the building. #mtedchat
A2: We started offering a community evening event once a month. Families loved the consistent occurrence on their calendar. Full family invitation so siblings, aunties, and grandparents all feel welcome. #mtedchat
A2 When I was in the classroom and pursuing National Board Cert. I hosted a family math game night and a family literacy night. Lots of work but tons of fun #mtedchat
A2: Future success will be the open house our freshly renovated JH/HS will be having. A few weeks away but it will be FUN. Our admin is doing evening tours of the ongoing work for the community to see next week. But man it is beautiful. #mtedchat
A2b) I also think when Ss see Ps and Ts working and learning together-they understand that learning is important. Esp impt w/ multiple cultures #mtedchat
Retweeting because I think many of us have experienced this... YES in the building is a GREAT start. I find the more we can share all student successes with the community the more engaged the community becomes. Creates positive climate, reminds all that it is about kids #mtedchat

Ha! We weren't ready, but started it anyway... A favorite part of the process for me was starting with staff all setting up and taking everything down for the first one... quickly changed to volunteers from community sticking around to help. Powerful #mtedchat
A3. This is similar to Zaretta Hammond's work. As we include families and community we increase the strength of connection between student and content. #mtedchat
A3: Students benefit from having a system of support around them. They have people to lean on and turn to when things are challenging. They can find people to look up to as they navigate growing up. It is safer taking risks and setting goals when connected. #mtedchat#wholechild

Good on You! I had the pleasure to work closely with them when I was an educator in AK. Great things for kids. If you have the chance to attend a Phlight Club...DO IT. #mtedchat

A4: We make wristbands for all special events that the students wear home... Younger students wear them on their wrists...older students put them on their backpacks... The quick visual makes a huge difference with follow-through. No more, lost in the backpack flyer.... #MTedchat
A4: I know many districts hesitate to use social media for direct communication with families...but I have found Facebook messenger to be the most direct, and reliable tool for reaching our hardest to reach families. Even with no cellular, oft can receive over wifi. #mtedchat
A4) We have a carnival at the end of the year and invite the library system, communities in schools program and local food trucks, firefighters, police etc to join the event #mtedchat
I plan to!! They have one in the area now.... Hoping to host one for reservation area schools too. I feel like I should know, but can you remind me where you are now? #mtedchat

A5: The hardest situation for me are when the family...student and parents...are all apathetic. I understand scared, nervous, anxious, etc. I struggle with apathetic. #MTedchat
