got schooled on this by my own kid at preschool. I had to google it when he called me a bucket dipper!
A4: Adding quick team building activities throughout the week!
Bucket dipper? That sounds sassy! https://t.co/5L8jBBo17N
got schooled on this by my own kid at preschool. I had to google it when he called me a bucket dipper!
Steal away! I think it has a much nicer ring to it than "bell work."
look at breakoutedu - they have some cool stuff for this. murray just got 6!
A5. Relationships w/all (but especially disruptive) Ss=key. If Ss know you care about them, they’ll care about your expectations.
A5: I have 2 standing desks for my Ss.They love it! It allos Ss to release energy while being on task. https://t.co/WEU0dI90Bv
A5: I love when I can continue teaching and ask a disruptive student a question to refocus them. That usually does the trick!
A4: Model what you expect, most importantly. All Eaton Ss record acts of kindness to be posted around school.
Welcome to the chat! Secondary Ts are present and accounted for tonite!
Q5 write redirections for individual Ss on sticky notes so redirecting doesn't distract the entire class
A5 I have the Ss get up & jog in place or jump up & down for 30 sec to deal with middle school energy or if they are fallin asleep
A4. Yes! Students dont care how much you know, until they know how much you care!!! https://t.co/PKhaphpktU
A4. Relationships = key to positive classroom culture. Greet Ss at the door. Smile. Ask questions. And care about the answers.

Q5 write redirections for individual Ss on sticky notes so redirecting doesn't distract the entire class
Such a great strategy. Middle school Ss need movement! has whiteboards built in to theirs!
A4: I keep a rotation of happy, inspirational quotes on the board. Cheesy I know, but it lightens the mood & usually brings smiles
A5 Catch those students in the positive moments and make sure other kids do too! The kids are always looking to see how we react.
A5: for the win! Try to find a positive for that child. Good attention vs negative attention.
thank you for the invite! I'm glad to be here with you all!
I believe in keeping the cheese factor high!
Love this! Much better than creating a class-wide distraction
A5: Let them move! Include movement in your lesson
Librarians do have unique opportunities to connect w Ss -offer safe havens
Great idea! I have never seen this done but really see how it could be effective.
Late to the party but I'm here :)
Welcome! Now wasn't the last to arrive, tee hee hee.
A5: Let them use a clipboard and stand in back or side of room. Brain breaks and movement breaks as needed
A6 Communicating with parents early in the year helps to establish a positive working relationship between home and school.
I start emailing parents the first week of school.
A6 This is an area I really want to focus on improving this year so I'm curious to see what others suggest!
A6: On the 1st day I collect email address and send home weekly email updates. Also REMIND101 IS AWESOME!
A6. Make sure you call home w/POSITIVE news! Don’t let your 1st call w/a concern be the 1st time they’ve heard from you.
A6: is one of my fav ways of mass communicating. Parent phone calls are time consuming but always SO helpful!
A6: Communication tools are a MUST! Remind, Class Dojo, SeeSaw...and now Google Classroom allows this!
A6 If you haven't checked out Bloomz yet, it's fantastic. My parents love so far this year!
Back to Q4:always amazed at how many of our teachers attend the outside events that are students are a part of-relational builder.
thanks for sharing. I just browsed through the breakoutedu game database today. It's amazing!
Had this experience this week.
Yes! I have used Google Classroom in the past and really like it!
A6: I've learned that you cannot communicate enough. But with Parents, don't forget about the postitive phone calls too
A6: Positive notes home and letting them call their parents when they've done something great!
A6: We use remind101, Twitter, Facebook and the website to keep Ps and Ss connected to what's going on @
A6: had us call home with good remarks, such great reactions from parents https://t.co/iuaIFdAziQ
A6. Make sure you call home w/POSITIVE news! Don’t let your 1st call w/a concern be the 1st time they’ve heard from you.
Excellent point and so important to our Ss
A6: Talk to them...about them! Make it obvious that you care about their family and helping their student(s) be successful!
A6: 1st contact should be positive contact. -so thankful these exist in my village!
So true. Do if often and don't forget the positive.
Need to check this one out.
A6: Also, social media and showing how involved you are in their children's lives and
always, always, always true!
It's a must! Think Facebook for your parents, just in a private and safe environment!
Q6: Call and connect via Remind, google voice, go to sports activities, call for positive things. Make parent contact from Day 1
YES! I believe that positive contacts should far outnumber negative! https://t.co/EDgcRVO4EX
A6: I've learned that you cannot communicate enough. But with Parents, don't forget about the postitive phone calls too
I knew there was something out there for this :) https://t.co/FGL6cGSYTv
It's a must! Think Facebook for your parents, just in a private and safe environment!
A6 Fridays I try to write a few letters home to parents about something positive their child did that week (I call it 4 on Friday)
Just joining! Thanks, tropical storm Julia, for making my drive home so fun!

Yea Girl https://t.co/FuFfo6LSt5
A6 Fridays I try to write a few letters home to parents about something positive their child did that week (I call it 4 on Friday)
A6 Serving on School Improvement Council gives me a monthly chance to share library news.
A6: Also, I now know as a parent I appreciate the newsletters that we get weekly, so crucial to help me help my kid
...and they do wonders for the students AND the parents. This small gesture has a lasting impact. https://t.co/UVz8FGhG4T
A6 Fridays I try to write a few letters home to parents about something positive their child did that week (I call it 4 on Friday)
A7: This comes to mind when I think about group work. ☺There's almost always that one group... https://t.co/iKRttTj8yF
A7: I assign groups based on previous weeks performance.Mix lower with higher level skill groups. All Ss know my expectations.
just had a conversation with a BT about this today! So true and such an opportunity!
A7 It varies - Ss pick groups sometimes, other times I group. I always give how much time remains & it helps them stay on task
love this!!!! always makes me lol
A7: Group norms set from the get-go. Lots of Kagan strategies for this. But you must practice it to get Ss good at it
We all need someone to remind us when we forget!
lol that's awesome! Funny because it's true!
A7: A key to successful group work is doing it often enough that the expectations and procedures are routine.
A7 assign weekly group leaders to teach students to hold their peers and themselves accountable
a7 I group students by voice part - soprano, alto, baritone.
Kagan structures help keep collaboration engaging for all students
When you did this students were walking by my room telling what group they got in to https://t.co/cl3KzMSZvr
a7 I group students by voice part - soprano, alto, baritone.
A7: Group work is not for the sedentary T! I walked among Ss and structured my feedback as questions to keep them focused.
Group work done well can build positive classroom culture
A7: I learned about using choice eliminator in Google forms to create groups. I'm looking forward to sharing that with Ts soon
a7 I group drama Ss randomly with name cards. I rarely trust them to create their own group.
A7: With a pre-assess., math Ts can group kids based on common errors. Helps you monitor and that one kid won't take over
A7 Any project that involves Ss using their own device, collaborating on google classroom, and a RUBRIC can work miracles!
I agree! It takes a long time to build that routine! https://t.co/pIWQRy5uTb
A7: A key to successful group work is doing it often enough that the expectations and procedures are routine.
Q7 Establish group norms. Model small group norms. Circulate! I use a "clock buddies" peer pairing system. Kids choose 2 buddies.
Amen, brother! https://t.co/p3ZOxAz1rl
A7 Any project that involves Ss using their own device, collaborating on google classroom, and a RUBRIC can work miracles!
Okay! are you ready for Question 8?
A7: keeping groups on task...give everyone a responsibility. Value student strengths.
so excited to learn more about this!
Really love this strategy!
A7: their names are on Popsicle sticks and I call them "sticks of fate"
A7: Grouping can be the same. Value their strengths, pair a strength with an area to grow. The purpose is learning.
haha sounds very Hunger Games-ish
I am excited to share with you guys! Learned so much at the GAFE summit in July :) https://t.co/WAL5erPin9
so excited to learn more about this!
work on the front end, but well worth the effort (a la MDC)
I have to go, but great to see so many people taking part. Please join us in Oct. when we examine primary sources & Election 2016
A8 Always be prepared with questions that helps students to extend their learning. It's not about just more, but delving deeper.
A8: I’m working on Ss looking ahead and fingering through new music while I work with other students. Still learning this routine!
A8: Have them check their work with a partner. If it is ok, then they can complete their weekly KSS in class using the computers.
A8 I do extra "fun" assignments - create ur own crossword using unit vocab & create ur own questions
A8 I like to have extensions ready for anyone who works that fast - as long as they're accurate!
Sorry I'm late! First chat
And they've shown their work :)
a8 Repetition is a musician friend. We usually stay together. We do it over and over together and we are never done polishing.
A7: We start year with this lesson: https://t.co/yeRXgYQf8l Kids work in group so solve bank robbery. They share clues & solve
discussed at our staff meeting today. Relationships are built from positive interactions, so is student trust.
Ss always keep a book with them everywhere they go. If they finish early, they read. It's part of their professionalism grade
Teachers have to plan that as a part of their lessons and not just on the "fly".
A8: Ss always keep a book with them everywhere they go. If they finish early, they read. It's part of their professionalism grade
A7:Depends on the assignment. Strengths & needs Nakajima normally. Sometimes kids choose. I'm big on time and timers!
I love that! Professionalism grade!
OOOH, some great ideas here!
I have a math challenge board for students to work on when they finish. Problem solving and puzzle type activities.
Never a dull moment or down moment in your room! Always loved walking thru!
I love that it can encompass so much more than just participation- almost like a "how to be a successful human" grade
Awesome! https://t.co/n3HJ6rGrAy
I have a math challenge board for students to work on when they finish. Problem solving and puzzle type activities.
Question 9 is just around the corner!
A8: Let them read a book for pleasure! So many kids need that time!
Yes love it https://t.co/MgAlSE2ufx
I have a math challenge board for students to work on when they finish. Problem solving and puzzle type activities.
Yes! Train them and turn them loose.
A8: track a current event. ie 2016 election, pipeline protests, etc. and give update to class even better if it can be ongoing
I did a version of this with my Ss. Figured they deserved a chance to work on something that they liked https://t.co/Vlu2ZRGe6k
I do something similar with math stations. Extension activities that require lots of brain power!
A8 One of the key takeaways from Learning Focused was remediation AND acceleration plans https://t.co/23VgPWXLOw
Teachers have to plan that as a part of their lessons and not just on the "fly".
A8: help others! Reading is always great. Not enough reading time in my day!
A8: Computer or student device so they can enjoy extension activities related to content
thanks! house it somewhere collaboratively. Ss in dif classes can add to it. mind map on the wall. in google.
I seriously can't believe is almost over!
A9:I put this up.Ss quickly point out what is wrong & don't acknowledge ones correct. We all make mistakes https://t.co/g6HFwY150i
A9: Let them see you fail. Shake it off. Let them see you learn from it. Show them that next time, it will be better!
A9: I let Ss see me laugh at myself & my own mistakes! Ss learn mistakes are normal & it makes them more fearless and creative.
A8: Every self selected reading & writing opportunity is a learning opportunity!
A8: engage students with extensions of their learning. Challenging but fun. Use student interests to guide.
It is so important that they see how we solve our own problems https://t.co/aWNDMweciK
A9: I let Ss see me laugh at myself & my own mistakes! Ss learn mistakes are normal & it makes them more fearless and creative.
a9 I mess up a lot... like a normal person. I don't hide it. I make my space a safe space to make mistakes. That's how we learn.
A9: This...but I’d share the skittles with Ss and ask them how the lesson can be improved upon. https://t.co/9nTXJnIQcl
A9 Don't be afraid to share your failures and missteps.
A9 "Wall of Awesomeness" to show off Ss awesome work & allow test corrections to encourage students to never keep trying for an A
A9 - love what everyone has here. I'm transparent when I fail or a lesson flops or I need to change something.
A9 Asking students the lesson they learned when they make mistakes! It becomes a contest to see what lessons we learn each day.
Show them that as a result you grow and improve https://t.co/CDcQ6Yc7Jq
A9: Let them see you fail. Shake it off. Let them see you learn from it. Show them that next time, it will be better!
A9: Last year we did a group dab when a student make a great point or contribution
A9: I try to point out my own mistakes to Ss and Ts...and how I plan to fix them. Mistakes are proof that we are trying!
A9: I love plus-delta charts! Ss learn to evaluate self & others constantly, focusing on what ss do well & where they can grow
A9: Positive Norms in Math Class-everyone can learn math, eveyone makes mistakes. Great read https://t.co/QSlbhYivRk
Hard to believe it is already time for our last question.
A9: look up "bad idea factory" for projects. it can quiet those negative voices in Ss heads.
A9: Every student has their own spot in the room to display anything/work they're proud of
Great strategy to lead to true reflection. https://t.co/AO0ioZvQlh
A9 Asking students the lesson they learned when they make mistakes! It becomes a contest to see what lessons we learn each day.
This is huge for me! I model constantly, but ss know that my modeling isn't always perfect. We learn together.
A10: I would love to see one about Arts Integration in Gen Ed! Ss are so engaged with arts & can make so many content connections.
A9: I always challenged kids to find my mistakes, they loved doing that and I may have made a few on purpose to keep them on toes
A10: Would love to see one to help BT's
A10 Waiting on the Dr. Markley/Dr. Holliday chat.
A10: Have we seen a selfie of tonight's moderators yet?
