#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
All feedback must be offered in a timely manner. If a principal observed a teacher doing something in October and finally gets around to offering feedback in December, it will not be effective. #LeadershipDevelopment#professionaldevelopment#satchat#edchat
Good morning! Fourth grade teacher, inst tech guy, and prospective admin from central Illinois, joining you from the Chicago Regency during #ILjac17! #satchat
Good morning and welcome to #Satchat. Today we have @listenwiselearn guest moderating our conversation on Teaching Listening Skills in Our Classroom. Please introduce yourself.
Good Morning #satchat! Amanda from @WeAreHTSD - eager to hear some ideas from other teachers about speaking and listening to bring back to my math classroom.
Good morning and welcome to #Satchat. Today we have @listenwiselearn guest moderating our conversation on Teaching Listening Skills in Our Classroom. Please introduce yourself.
A1: Listening is an important skill to develop because it lends to the mastery of reading and writing. If a child lacks listening skills, he will struggle to succeed. It's our job to teach those skills #satchat
Thanks to @bradmcurrie@wkrakower@ScottRRocco for organizing! If anyone has any questions/comments after the chat, feel free to email me at chelsea@listenwise.com- Let’s get started... #satchat
My Listening page https://t.co/sg9sVg8kl6
Listening helps us achieve more information and meaning from what we hear. “We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say.”
― Zeno of Citium #satchat
A1 Seems like listening is used the most. Ts talked to Ss, Ss talk to each other. Even before writing assignments, tests, etc - Ss need to "listen for directions" #satchat
GM Josephine from Dominica Superintendent of Catholic Schools Was so eager to join forgot about DST and joined one hour earlier Good to be back after the ravages of Hurricane Maria #satchat
A1: Teaching Ss to listen is step one in increasing their self awareness, they tune in to others & themselves, their perceptions, opinions, and feelings-build learning awareness #satchat
#satchat Listening is especially important in a foreign language class. You cannot effectively communicate if you did not first understand what the other person is saying.
A2: Any time I make a lesson plan, I include a discussion, even if it's just 3 minutes at the end. Sharing ideas and listening to each other is important in any career. #satchat
A1b We also spend a lot of time listening as adults - radio and other media, meetings, presentations, conversations. We listen a lot and we need to give our Ss that skill! #satchat
A1: Listening means hearing and trying to understand tone of invoice, inflection, emotion (which includes background sound like music, too). Affective component of conent. #satchat@listenwiselearn
A1: Listening is a skill I think people of all ages lack today. We tend to "listen" with our next response in mind instead of actually hearing what the other person is saying. We need to truly hear and comprehend the message being conveyed to us. #satchat
A1: Oral language is foundational to development of written language skills (with some exceptions, of course). Listening skills are also key to success in most other venues—must be transferable. #satchat
A1: Listening means hearing and trying to understand tone of voice, inflection, emotion (which includes background sound like music, too). Affective component of conent. #satchat@listenwiselearn
A1- Listening an important skill to teach because students are consuming media in new ways and must be able to comprehend, evaluate and share what they hear #satchat
We focus so much assessment on student output, so students feel pressure around their responses. An emphasis on empathy can help shift the focus to listening #satchat
A1. There is a reason why one of the #sevenhabits is seek first to understand and then to be understood. Listening is a skill many Ss are missing. They just want to talk! #satchat
A1: In order to provide/demonstrate the best service/performance, listening is required. This is true for pretty much everything in life, education included. #satchat
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: Excited to jump into #satchat this morning! Dr. Monica Burns, EdTech & Curriculum Consultant, Author of #TasksBeforeApps, Founder of https://t.co/I51g6Riyr6 -- in Rochester today getting ready for #NYSCATE17
A1: Working w/SpEd S's most of my life made me realize that they try to listen to everything & don't know what to remember. Listening skills are key. #satchat
Wish I could participate in the #satchat. But PLEASE be aware that many classrooms have students with hearing loss and you need to accommodate for them (by repeating peer answers so they can lipread). Make classrooms #accessible for our #deafed students too.
A1 Listening is the beginning of letting others influence your learning. Teaching how to listen well will translate to learning well and dialogue. #satchat
RT ClassTechTips: A1- Listening an important skill to teach because students are consuming media in new ways and must be able to comprehend, evaluate and share what they hear #satchat
A1 Listening leads to learning and understanding. Being able to truly listen and understand is a skill. It’s deeper than just surface hearing. Listening means you can put it in your own words. #satchat
A1 listening -how we become a part of community by building relationship bridges - & how we humans 1st learn to communicate verbally -a prequisite to connecting & processing environmental clues and cues #Satchat
"I f**king hate white men," said Sarah Semrad, a former Wisconsin college democrats leader.
Good riddance, you racist.

Good Morning #satchat! Amanda from @WeAreHTSD - eager to hear some ideas from other teachers about speaking and listening to bring back to my math classroom.
A1 Every important life skill – thinking critically and creatively, solving problems, understanding and relating to others, dismantling biased systems, building a more just world – begins with deep, full listening. #satchat
A1: Listening requires someone to process another perspective, strategy or opinion without judgment - Listening requires open-mindedness which is critical to developing new ideas and learning #satchat
A1: step one in problem-solving and design is listening to your stakeholders, develop empathy with their needs. Everything starts with listening! #satchat@listenwiselearn
A1 - While Ss are not specifically ‘auditory learners’ (b/c learning styles are a myth), listening is an important avenue for taking in information. #satchat
A1: it’s important to be able to process information from all formats, including listening, and practice filtering what information is relevant to your task at hand and what is not. It’s one of the many modes of learning (auditory). #satchat
I agree! So important to stress to them the difference of "hearing" vs. "listening". Maybe encourage a lot of repeating back "What I heard you say was..." #satchat
A1 Hearing is an ability, but listening is a skill that we must teach and allow for practice in our classrooms. Active listening is difficult, but every good conversation begins with good listening. #satchat
A2: I’m currently not in a classroom but I understand the imp of strengthening Ss listening skills. I personally have to concentrate on not interrupting while in a conversation. #satchat Listening is a skill that must b practiced!🗣👂🏼
A1 when I taught ecology, used to take kids in woods and sit and listen .. today I record sounds of nature to share w children .. listening helps us make sense of the world #Satchat
A1 Teaching the skill of active listening helps Ss begin to develop the ability to demonstrate engagement without talking. What their eyes say is important. Sparks, curiosity, doubt can all been seen on faces of listeners. #satchat
A2: Teaching listening can be done through collaborative games, projects, presenting, being an audience for others, teach kids active listening! #satchat
Dennis, elem principal from CT A1) learning to listen will lead Ss to be able to adjust their own thinking, which is what learning is all about. #satchat
A1 Listening is important as most of us realize that we are not good listeners, and we want to instill skills for the next generation to be better than us. #satchat
A2: I use cooperative learning strategies to help my Ss develop listening skills while sharing and responding to each other's thoughts and ideas. #satchat
A1 we practice listening when analyzing student writing in class. Listening skills allow them to debate what makes a good response...very important part of growth. #satchat
I spend a great deal of time listening to my students as we participate in #communitycircle daily. Listening is how we build relationships. My tweet was saying that Ss do not process what they are hearing to make it meaningful and just begin to respond. #satchat
A1 Hearing is an ability, but listening is a skill that we must teach and allow for practice in our classrooms. Active listening is difficult, but every good conversation begins with good listening. #satchat
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: A1- Listening an important skill to teach because students are consuming media in new ways and must be able to comprehend, evaluate and share what they hear #satchat
A2. We participate in #communitycircle daily which requires a talking piece. Ss show our core values (respect, trust, and honesty) which has helped Ss distinguish btwn listening and hearing #satchat
GREAT point about when kids go digital too. We teach them how to "read" people in-person, but we also need to make sure they learn how to "read" digital messages. Awesome point! #satchat
Yes! I'm severely hearing impaired & school was tough. I teach Ss not to put their hands in front of their mouth when speaking, & not to swear under their breath (my lipreading surprises them!) #satchat
We teach the 7 Habits at my school, and one of the Habits is to seek first to understand and then to be understood. We need to listen to others first and understand them, before we can be understood. #satchat
RT ClassTechTips: A2 - When I visit schools and work with students and teachers, we explore video content for both consumption and creation #satchat#NYSCATE17
That's great insight! So many times I head Ts say "Are you listening? Did you hear what I said?" Hearing, listening, and action are three different functions! #satchat
Yes! Even in math we work on strategies for active listening. How to take notes when someone is talking or how to ask probing questions. How to be reflective in what we hear. #satchat
We can't build relationships without listening to each other. The most important things in schools happen within relationships built on compassion and understanding. #satchat
A2: I have incorporated "Math Talk" in my classroom - discussions about various problem solving strategies or error analysis -but haven't focused specifically on listening - here for new ideas! #satchat
REMINDER TO OUR #satchat PLN:
Spam shows up periodically and you have the power to REPORT AND BLOCK.
Make sure you do both.
The more who do the less spam in the chat.
A2: Sadly, I have not taught listening as a skill. I am here today to get some ideas to use in the classroom. In the past I assumed that listening skills are inherent, but my eyes have been opened to otherwise. #satchat
A2: Class discussions have intermittent pauses for S's to capture ideas they heard that are interesting. Conversation re-starts w/ students saying what they heard and why it is important; great use for a backchannel #satchat
A2 Having students be accountable to respond to the T and each other with meaningful feedback that comes from truly listening. Socratic seminar is great for developing listening skills! #satchat
A2: listening is taught in my class by reading out loud as a group and responding in small group discussions about what was said and what was heard; perception is everything #satchat
A2: I “introduce” my Ss to FREDA: Focus, Remove distractions, Eye contact, Do not interrupt, Ask questions. Each step has a hand signal to help w recall. After practicing, all I need to do to get them to reset is say FREDA. #satchat
A1: Listening enhances finding evidence of learning as educators assess the impact of teaching. Listening as assessment - you bet. Listening leading to a formative dialogue of learning - formative assessment. #satchat
#satchat A2: I do not consciously teach listening skills. However, they are naturally built into my program. Ss often collaborate with one another, and they must listen to me to succeed in the class.
A3: Provide structures so students can successfully process their listening. Graphic organizers/sentence frames/ placemats/summary GISTs - anything to help them paraphrase and process what they’ve heard. #satchat
A1: Teaching Ss to listen is step one in increasing their self awareness, they tune in to others & themselves, their perceptions, opinions, and feelings-build learning awareness #satchat
I like this. In tech, we are helping students sort what they are seeing and hearing in the media. Discernible listening is a difficult skill, even for adults! #satchat
A2 Morning meeting: Ss share something about themselves, then take questions or comments. Everyone else is expected to ask a question to dig deeper into something they said. They MUST listen! (they're getting better...) #satchat
A2 Realizing I did not focus on teaching listening as a skill, but can see how it would have had a positive impact in my Eng classroom. Add it to my "if I could do it all over" list. #satchat
It’s great to have Ss read part of a script & ask what is going on & then play different actor’s interpretations & ask again what do you think is going on? Finish with seeing a video of act-listening is paying attention to all of it #satchat
Use Pivot discussion strategy. One student is A, one is B. When finished, ask A to share what B said. This encourages kids to focus on what their partner says. #satchat
Thnx Gingerv.. Listening is holistic - not just stopping to hear and consider words of others .. also about listening to and learning from all kinds of inputs that come at us #satchat
A2: In my Resource class we have discussions and I have the Ss connect with the previous persons statement in some way before stating their opinion
#satchat
A2 When students share their ideas, everyone else writes each student’s name and a little nugget of what they said. Then, they respond with sayback (“I heard you say...”) or questions about each other’s ideas. #satchat
A2 Understanding that people's responses may be based on their experiences and position is also important. I LOVE the Visible Thinking "Circle of Viewpoints" thinking routine. #satchat
I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
A2 We had discussions all the time, but the focus was saying something. We did small group lit circles, but no direct focus on listening. So many places I could have used listening skills. #satchat
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: A2 - When I visit schools and work with students and teachers, we explore video content for both consumption and creation #satchat#NYSCATE17
Awesome. Thanks Gretchen. Josh & Mandy are awesome podcast hosts and everyone's having so much fun in these conversations with them. We should cross-podcast w/ your awesome work https://t.co/rkDc8AyybK#satchat
In reply to
@GSchultek, @mrgfactoftheday, @mandymtaylor
A6: This TedTalk made me realize I’m not a great listener myself! As @jasongraham99 said, I spend most of my time thinking of what I want to say next, even in casual conversation. A great video for Ss and Ts! #satchathttps://t.co/nNnMpssR2l via @TEDTalks
A2: In writing lessons, I like to start w/ a pair-share brainstorming where one partner speaks about the topic without interruption for 30-60 seconds then switch for other partner to speak. Then Ss share w/class about what their partner said. #satchat
Maybe set up channel to make use explicitly about listening .. I sometimes have to stop and respond in twitter chats or otherwise it feels like parallel disconnected sound bytes -#satchat
A2: In my Resource class we have discussions and I have the Ss connect with the previous persons statement in some way before stating their opinion
#satchat
I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
#satchat Quick question related to Ss listening to teacher: do you ever have Ss who ask what you just said? Or Ss who, answer them saying, "She just said that!" ?
One example is soundscapes - Soundscapes are the aural landscapes of our world. Explore the sound environment and create your own soundscape compositions from combining and editing sounds. #satchat
Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat
I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
A2:My K Ss learn to comment on ideas of others by stating if the agree, disagree, like what was shared and why before giving their own thoughts. They also must “track the speaker” at all times. #satchat
A3: Maybe starting with smaller groups 1st to build listening skills would be beneficial. Let students choose topics of discussion of interest to them. #SatChat
Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat
A2 and how do we learn to listen to ourselves .. metacognitive processes “what am I doing right now? How did I figure this out? What else do I need to know to understand this? What’s going on with my friend?” #Satchat
A3: Check for understanding, ask Ss to repeat directions, tasks, ensure they are attending before moving on-clear explicit expectations-model! #satchat
A3 I think listening skills need to be taught exclusively at first. If they are mixed in with an assignment or other activity, Ss are going to focus on that and not on actively listening. #satchat
A3: One way to set students up for success is to give them sentence starters that help them attune to what was being said. Ex: When you said ________, I thought_____. #satchat
I used to think that students would listen for the reasons that I do; most of them have far different motivation to listen than mine. We must learn how they listen and why. #satchat
A2: Absolutey. Listening dwells on both interacting with feedback from Ts and collaboration with Ss. My co-T and I focus on justifying opinions & creating meaningful dialogue about tough questions, teaching that the talk is as important as the answer. #Satchat
Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat

Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat
A2- T prep programs don’t focus on listening- rather we teach more the strategies for R&W. I’m wondering now how to affect that change in higher ed #Satchat
A3: Try the Think, Pair, Share, Post method. It gives students a chance to listen to their their peers but also share out what they learned in the virtual world. #satchat
We ask students, what does it mean to "follow" or "like" - are you listening to the person? Supporting or agreeing with them? Just hearing what they share? #satchat
A3. I think we have to be intentional about this critical skill. Our school has Advisory and as a result is a place where we can be deliberate in our efforts. #SatChat
my sorrow when shes here with me

I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
RT ClassTechTips: A3 - Modelling is a huge part of setting up students for success - showing how you listen, respond, and interact with media is essential #satchat
A2 I use triad questioning - ask one S a question, ask a 2nd one to agree, disagree, explain or build on 1st S's response. Then 3rd S. Teaches them to truly listen to each other #satchat
A3.2 The Discussion Book is subtitled “50 Great Ways to Get People Talking” but is also a fantastic resource to teach listening https://t.co/JtJ4nOe3O1#satchat
#satchat If every country gave 1000 dollars a month to everyone the rich and poor and didn't make it taxed or need to be paid for by a tax. People could work a low paying job and not still be broke. Economy would boom!
So true! Empathy is the thread that weaves through humanity to make us more compassionate towards others. Active listening requires empathy even if not complete agreement. #satchat
I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
Teaching kids to listen to learn from each other rather than just to figure out what to say next is an important part in creating better humans #satchat
A3 I could use some help with this one- Students sometimes feel the need to "fill the space" in the room, want to be the focus, need to focus on multiple tasks at once #satchat
A3 Take time during lessons for a focus check. Stop and listen and observe if all students are listening. If not have those who struggle with it repeat directions. Everyday practices promote listening #satchat
#satchat A3: I am reminded that I need to conduct more listening assessments. This was part of the conference I recently attended and now it is being reinforced. I need to step up my game on this.
I think that old strategy the Directed Listening Thinking Activity DLTA can help children learn to ask questions, respond to others’ stories, make experiential inferences by listening carefully and slowly #satchat
A3: we provide a range of activities that pair listening with writing or listening with reading to reinforce other skills as well, showing that listening is equally as important as the other three skills. #satchat
A3: Feedback Friday was effectivefot me. Every Friday students would give me feedback on what worked/didn’t work for them. What they liked/didn’t like. What they wanted more/less of and why. When they saw their input had power, engagement increased. #satchat
A3: I model listening by making eye contact and I require eye contact from all of my Ss - I then repeat, "What I heard you say was..." before giving my input #satchat
Me too! And my daughter. She got in trouble for doodling two years ago, but that's just what she does when paying attention. She now has an official "doodling accommodation" #satchat
A3: While teaching Avid and Reading we used instructional strategies that dev listening skills. Tutorials, Soc Seminars, Phil Chairs, Turn and Talk. There were guidelines they had to follow while participating. Great tools!!#satchat
A4-I love the idea of podcasts for listening. Many of my Ss enjoy listening and following along for building fluency- this can be our next step. #Satchat
#satchat Consider the role of MINDFULNESS and BEING PRESENT practices when teaching listening skills. If you are multitasking .. can you really listen? #TeachKidsHowToMeditate
A3 Gradual release of responsibility
1. I do, you watch (reflect)
2. We do it together (reflect)
3. You do, I watch (reflect)
Make anchor charts with expectations for listening and sentence/question stems
#satchat
Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat
Q3 - How do you set your students up for success when teaching listening skills? (If you aren't teaching listening yet, think about what you might do...) #satchat
I agree! It’s eye opening to Ss when they realize they are accountable for active listening. But, oh the joy, to have a classmate talk about things YOU shared! So validating! #satchat
A3. I have seen a teacher use the listening portion as a part of their check for understanding. Windshield metaphor: is your clear, covered in bugs, or covered in mud. The dialogue/dissection ensues on kids’ feedback #satchat

Absolutely! As we move forward in a world of rapid tech advancement, our ability to mesh innovation with humanity and empathy will determine whether we have a "Star Trek" future or a "Terminator/Matrix/MinorityReport" future. #satchat
A3 Principals and teachers, be intentional about carving out time and space for listening. In classrooms, an approach like The Morning Meeting can help students benefit from routine of listening and sharing. #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
Me too! I also add a line: "Correct me, please, if I misinterpreted anything" I notice that the kids are beginning to copy the words, which is awesome sauce #satchat
#satchat after hearing all these actresses singers athletes tell of abuse back in day what I have learned and what message is being given to many young ppl is that is MORE IMPORTANT to seek fame and fortune first THEN Tell so STFU but thanks
A1 Hearing is an ability, but listening is a skill that we must teach and allow for practice in our classrooms. Active listening is difficult, but every good conversation begins with good listening. #satchat
A3 Principals, be sure to carve out time and space to listen to your teachers too. #satchat Walk-through observations should not just be for visibility. Feedback is key, and encourage two-way dialogue.
Try this: save my photo to your camera roll then you will have them to refer back! If it’s not clear enough let me know and I’ll take a screenshot from laptop #satchat
Interesting. This can be a very difficult disclaimer for women in the professional world. I'm curious if you see gender responses differ in the classroom? #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
A reminder that at least 15 women have accused Donald Trump on the record of unwanted physical contact. Listen for the patterns in their stories. #inners
A3: Direct, active listening tasks. We need to teach these skills just like we teach math skills. Role plays are helpful. The Peace Path to solve conflicts forces students to listen to each other. #satchat
A3: 1 strategy I️ used when teaching was to provide students something specific to listen for ex. main idea or tone etc. & I’d tell them how long I️ was going to read for—then we’d discuss what they recorded as evidence. Trying to build listening perseverance! #SatChat
A4 Capture thinking/learning of any kind and archiving it (recording books, discussions, ppt, parking lot in PD, etc...) allows people to re-access the learning so they can listen/learn at their own pace. #satchat
A4- just searched iTunes podcast app
top charts in Science... GOLD! Ss could be challenged to find audio in their area.
- great opp for disc of bias and info validity #Satchat
A4 I still find reading really high quality engaging texts draws kids in and encourages critical thinking and listening. If they like it they’ll talk about it. #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
A big part of listening is noticing discomfort and choosing to accept that discomfort in the service of values-consistent living and learning. #satchat
A4 podcasts work well when there is a partnering activity, great opportunity to create drawings and 3D printed models of how Ss visualize the story #satchat
A4: Ask your librarians, there are studio books, fictional and non-fiction, play-a-ways of highly engaging current YA novels, group audio books for book clubs! #satchat
A4: I haven't used pod casts, and for the most part have used audio books only for differentiation. However, when we watch TedTalks, students use a graphic organizer that focuses their attention on the rhetorical tools used in the talk. #satchat
A4-I love the idea of podcasts for listening. Many of my Ss enjoy listening and following along for building fluency- this can be our next step. #Satchat
#satchat why is hunting issue a news report or focus for president how about economy taxes jobs healthcare Russia or China issues or terrorist sucks ppl hunt animals but fuck ppl the problem with America well there are many but one problem is we focus on the wrong shit
A4 If I were still in the classroom, @wowintheworld would be on my playlist. For critical thinking, lots of opportunities to hit pause and give Ss time to consider. #satchat
A4 @Learning_Ally is a game changer in access to audio books for Ss with print, visual & physical disabilities. Make sure your school offers it! #dyslexia#ATchat#satchat
I don't think true active listening can happen without empathy. Empathy is the character trait most closely correlated with success in life according to research. We need to explicitly focus on it in schools more. #satchat
A4: start class with an audio warm-up. Let's listen to this together... Ask students to take turns providing the audio warm-up of the day #satchat@listenwiselearn
A4: I don't have a class, but I use Podcasts for myself. #hyperdocs with video & reflection can be amazing for critical thinking and building listening skills for S's & T's. #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
I don’t currently use any podcasts. I use quite a few YouTube channels but that is both visual and auditory attention. Something to consider and research! #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
#satchat A4: Not a podcast, but I recently read a story to my level two students in Spanish. It was a story about Injustice. The kids were so engaged because they were so upset about how one character had treated another. Of course it had a good ending. :)
A4. As a principal I do a weekly podcast and will have guests (S’s) we practice some things and they have to listen to their own talk. Rarely do we have a finished product on our 1st try. Once they hear themselves they want to change pace, inflection, tone, etc. #satchat
A4 For Ss in writing, examining how podcasts are constructed is useful. They tell a story. Are they chronological? How do they build and keep interest? First person? Narrator? So many ties to writing. #satchat
Metacognition is so important as educators! Thanks to Twitter chats and blog posts, I've become more cognizant of my own listening behaviors which need fine-tuning! #satchat
For over a decade I have saved all of the favorite resources I have come across so I can help teachers with whatever they need using @diigo - super easy to locate them and share #satchat
A4 - may be a bit old-school, but we do "fishbowl" activities that really require Ss to listen to each other before responding - in order for the discussion to progress, Ss have to pay attn to previous comments #satchat
I️ am finding it more challenging at times to incorporate writing/doodling because of the digital nature of my world. Sorry to say I do not always have a paper and pen right next to me. #satchat

A4 I have found that FlipGrid is a great platform to build conversation skills (definitely listening). Students can SEE the speaker and HEAR them. Then, they get to respond and build on what was said. #satchat
A4 we tried an episode of #RevisionistHistory@Gladwell and it went semi-OK, great topic (S2 E4) and on point w/ our curriculum, but some Ss weren't into it :( #satchat
A4 Playaways and audiobooks r excellent resources from libraries. For research all databases offer an audio component #satchat Tell Ss we r researching bring headphones
A4 T shared that she had kids listen to news anchors doing interviews to analyze how they listen and ask follow up questions, restate and summarize what they hear #satchat
A3 Building listening skills during daily morning meetings. A sacred time. Activities, presentations, and readings in a comfortable venue #satchat#elemchat
A4 - may be a bit old-school, but we do "fishbowl" activities that really require Ss to listen to each other before responding - in order for the discussion to progress, Ss have to pay attn to previous comments #satchat

A4 I have found that FlipGrid is a great platform to build conversation skills (definitely listening). Students can SEE the speaker and HEAR them. Then, they get to respond and build on what was said. #satchat
A4 I'm very careful when using podcasts - I make sure there's a script to follow, for those Ss who are hearing impaired (many people don't realize they have hearing issues) #satchat
Q4 - Podcasts and audiobooks are a great medium for teaching listening. What tools do you use in your class to incorporate critical thinking and build listening skills? #satchat
A4b Ss reactions to #RevisionistHistory was mixed, I wonder if letting them listen independently is key rather than as a whole class? Some Ss lost focus... #satchat
A4: I’ve incorporated audiobooks and visual reps. of my stories to teach the difference in tone. Students hear how different readers portray the text and how that affects the tone and sequence of the story, focusing the listening. #satchat
#satchat
1. Choose Love
2. Choose Life
3. Choose Peace
4. Connect w People without using electronics
5. Choose Books over TV
6. Choose Humanity
7. Choose Light not dark
8. Learn history through old books
A4b I think the key to using podcasts in class might be to break it down instead of letting it play straight through - especially if it's deep in content, rather than telling a story-type podcast #satchat
RT ClassTechTips: Nikcal88 soundtrap I love GarageBand too (https://t.co/62BG2tc7wq) but Sountraps collaborative features make it very special :) #satchat
A4: We use restorative circles to practice actively listening to others. I also use tabletop games; students unplug once a week and talk and listen while gaming! #satchat
#satchat Consider the role of MINDFULNESS and BEING PRESENT practices when teaching listening skills. If you are multitasking .. can you really listen? #TeachKidsHowToMeditate
I have been listening to this exact podcast for great hook ideas in history- would love to transition to using this for flipped thinking #satchat#sschat#tlap thanks Brian @BrianHerb17
A4 this week kids reversed a career talk w guest speakers- instead of us talking about our work they interviewed us and videoed to make a followup project to share on their website #satchat
#satchat ok so Clinton fucked an intern therefore cheating on his wife & sleeping w19 yr old & we r cool, trump wanted 2 grap some pussys & we r cool (though we vilified billy bush not sure why) so Al Franken does a comedy routine & w cry like bitches fuck u twitter douches
I have not used this yet but my daughter uses flip grid in Algebra. Ss have to present an idea w/ Flipgrid and the class has to respond w/ questions and comments. #satchat#differentiation
Obama lied people died. The pass that the MSM gave Obama was just criminal. That POS should be in prison right alongside Hillary.

You’re welcome- display it on the wall/ screen to follow the class convo visually. We keep a special place just for that purpose (a wall for us) #satchat
A5a: Classroom grounding circles to start the day, circle check-ins as part of the learning day, facilitates both listening & empathy, builds comminuty! 😊 #satchat
We've been thinking about this in relation to posts on social media. How do you know your audience receives the message you intended to post? So interesting to hear student responses to this question #satchat
Every classroom in my K-5 school begins the day with Morning Meeting. Ss are building relationships, learning to listen and focusing on #OtherPeopleMatter because of the @PosProject#satchat
Welcome to Twitter, Karina! Most Twitter chats have moderators tweeting a screenshot with questions as they are released, but a few direct you to a website where all questions are listed. Let us know if you need any support as you build your PLN! #satchat
Listening independently - maybe letting each S choose their own episode at first would get them interested in #RevisionistHistory as a group. Each could share what they listened to. #satchat
Most people listen to reply, not to understand. We're all guilty of it at times. We need Ss to understand the power of listening to empathize. That's how we appreciate different perspectives and have nuanced conversations that lead to solutions of complex problems. #satchat
Not sure recordings and screens are the answer to helping students listen. Do they listen to each other? Do they ALL listen to ALL of their classmates, or are some voices privileged while others are silenced? #satchat
BUSTED: The Trump Tower in Panama was nothing but a multimillion dollar money laundering machine. Watch The Rachel Maddow Show investigative report as a video podcast here:

A4b: I often found that reinforcement of prosody using an audiobook while reading the written word helped Ss’ reading fluency tremendously, especially when I could adjust the speed of the read-aloud. #satchat
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: Nikcal88 soundtrap I love GarageBand too (https://t.co/pAsy4qVI6p) but Sountraps collaborative features make it very special :) #satchat
A4b. The first response I always here is “that’s not how we read it!” That’s what I honestly hope to hear. That realization creates the conversation about why we perceived something one way and how it could be perceived in another way. #satchat
A6: If teachers can see the benefit of teaching listening skills they'll be more apt to do it. They may have to start with themselves as listeners!#SatChat
A1: It’s crucial to reinforce good listening skills in the classroom! But I feel like we sometimes forget to truly listen to our students. Simply listening to your students’ concerns or just hearing about events in there daily life makes them feel valued. #satchat#EDUC140MC
A5 - Listening and reading are definitely related! Audio stories can help students learn about and connect with the word :) Here are a few favorites: https://t.co/Nj71Efy9tU#satchat
#satchat first why is Victoria secret show in China and 2nd saw that some ppl can’t be in show because if you have insulted China (Gigi Hadid I’m slant wys lookin at you gurl) you are not allowed in country. That’s classic can USA do that we will weed out so many idiots
.@SL_Stockman might you have any Spanish podcast resources? Perhaps you can create some audio recordings of your own, Gwena? @Seesaw and @Flipgrid are great tools for Ss to practive beginning language fluency. #satchat
In reply to
@gwena_walker, @SL_Stockman, @Seesaw, @Flipgrid
A5: When reading, you have to focus on what is written, just like when you listen. You can't be thinking about something else while you read or actively listen to someone else. #satchat
A5a: Classroom grounding circles to start the day, circle check-ins as part of the learning day, facilitates both listening & empathy, builds comminuty! 😊 #satchat
Yes! @Flipgrid is AWESOME! I also love that Ss can go back and listen again to catch things they may have missed the first time. Quick and easy! #satchat#flipgridfever
This Geico commercial featuring a sloth is cute, funny, and one of my favorite spots in rotation right now. Great ad! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #satchat#saturdaymorning#Geico
A4: @breakoutEDU requires students to listen to each other. None of us can do this alone, what are we each saying about how to solve these puzzles? Reflection Qs at the end help them unpack the need to listen #satchat

A5 Expression is everything in reading stories aloud! Kids can’t help but listen when you read something really well, you draw them in! Bring the text to life! #satchat
I just started including podcasts into my "explore" part of a lesson/unit. It was surprising to me how many did NOT choose the option. Videos were the top choice. #satchat
#satchat I just love the goldbergs show partly cause it’s so well written so so funny I only hope Beverly in real life was that insanely awesome but partly cause that’s where I grew up and all the points of interest are my joints go JTP
Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts. Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!
Not sure recordings and screens are the answer to helping students listen. Do they listen to each other? Do they ALL listen to ALL of their classmates, or are some voices privileged while others are silenced? #satchat
Absolutely! What is the perception of your message on social media? I like showing Ts the Twitter lists they are added to which is also a way to gauge the public's view of you and your purpose. #satchat#socialLEADia#tlap
A5 Sounds simplistic but reading is really listening to the voice in your head. When I️ read with expression, interest, fluency, etc. I am more likely to digest what I am viewing. #satchat
Our teachers have been using @BookCreatorApp to have students write or retell stories and then narrate them. Ss are able to get creative with their voice and tone and take on the role of their characters #satchat
A5: many students tend to read with flat affect; audiobooks and podcasts help them learn to infuse a story with emotion, intention, suspense, etc. #satchat@listenwiselearn

One of my favorite websites for starting conversations, especially when teaching social skills is https://t.co/ZJrwHo85XK Short clips sorted by theme. Just preview first... #satchat
A5: I’ve always believed that how you take in the story relates to what you take away from it. I have former students who remember a dramatic read and students who remember watching an adaptation. In my room, we read, we listen or watch, and we compare. #satchat
THANK YOU #SATCHAT PLN for a great conversation!
Thanks to our guest moderator @listenwiselearn and to my co-moderators @bradmcurrie@wkrakower
We are OFF next weekend for the holiday. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
See you back here on December 2nd!
Love this! You articulated the impact so well! Listening isn't just about receiving information, it's also about working together to create positive solutions to problems we cannot solve on our own. #satchat
It’s simple- brainstorm a name that matches your organization or goal- then search twitter to see if someone is already using it. If not, start! #satchat
A6 Empower teachers by letting them share actual teaching strategies in faculty meetings. Model the ABCs: Affirmation, Best practices, and Collaboration. #satchathttps://t.co/mxSngalTvA Often times, the best PD comes from within the school building!
A5: Sometimes flipping the listening process helps students read and write. For example, use the speech to text feature in Google Docs puts the listening into the hands of a computer. #HackGoogleEDU#satchat

#satchat Thank you! I am always looking for ways to incorporate things done in the English-speaking classroom into my Spanish classes and this was great!
Gotta run, thanks for a great chat as always!
I hope some of my #satchat friends will join #tlap 9 pm EST this Monday (11/20)! #teachSC#learnlap#leadlap

A6 Admin can model listening skills by using visible thinking and talk structures with Ts in PD, staff mtgs, etc...
Set up structures for Ts to observe one another teaching listening/talk structures w/ time for Ts to reflect & discuss observations
#satchat
A6 Schools can empower teachers to focus on teaching listening skills by first listening to the teachers! Everyone should be practicing active listening in a school, not just the kids! It's powerful and will trickle to the kids. #satchat
A6 Show Ts how by modeling listening with staff. Then show Ts where to incorporate listening skills throughout the day in all areas. If it’s not seen as “one more thing to do” Ts will be more likely to embrace it. #satchat
Good Saturday morning, peeps!
Wishing our awesome @POTUS and First Family, and all fellow patriots, a peaceful and blessed day. Enjoy! ♡
#saturdaymorning#satchat
Absolutely! We learn so much by listening to the stories of others, and develop a broad range of empathy skills when discovering diversity in our world. #satchat
A5 project or maker focus on how might we individually or in teams make life better for others, the environment, meet needs of challenged community members? How would we find out what others need? #satchat
A6 There's so much focus on active learning, but that doesn't mean Ss need to be moving, talking, doing. A classroom of quiet listeners is ok to. #satchat
I am amazed at how quickly politicians stopped giving a shit about Las Vegas and Texas shootings. Some value NRA donations more than human life. So sad and angry #satchat
#IfIWerePresident I would NOT abuse the office by building hotels & selling hats to voters for my own profit.
I would focus on criminal justice reform, women & LGBTQ rights instead of excluding based on race, gender & religion.

A6: Modeling and providing appropriate resources could help. Also, it’s important to stress that although ELA has listening standards, listening is pivotal in all classes. If we all practice the same methods and expectations, we’ll all see progress and improvement #satchat
