Hi! I’m Allyson Trimble, 3rd grade teacher in Vici. Favorite superhero is hard! I’m currently bingeing on Supergirl on Netflix. Like, literally, right now. (Excuse the mess... my 2 year old is playing 😂) #oklaed
A1: Linda Wade, candidate for Oklahoma Senate District 42 (Midwest City and Choctaw) and I’m not much for superheroes, but let’s go with Wonder Woman! #OklaEd
A1 - Students are facing a multitude of stressors and may have faced trauma I could never imagine, I need to strive to make my room a safe and welcoming place with no potential triggers. #oklaed
A1: I do not understand anything about students who exhibit trauma-based behaviors in school; I'm all ears. If I suspect harm, then I inform those above me of the incident. Great topic for OklaEd tonight! #oklaed
A1: I think it's hard to describe because they can be eerily silent or obnoxiously attention seeking - or a million places along that continuum. The only constant is that they need consistency and love and patience. #oklaed
A1 They are unavoidably bringing the effects of outside events into the school environment. Generally speaking, these students are doing as best they can. #oklaed
A1 - This is when Ss are trying to make sense of the world, trying to have some sense of control, and really just trying to cope w/all they are experiencing. #oklaed
A1: seeking a kind of help they don't even know they need in ways that are sometimes aggravating. It's a very complex set of behaviors so this answer is hard.. #oklaed
A1: Some behaviors may stem stem from circumstances beyond their control. Love them from day 1 and create an environment of care & respect. Then learning can take place. #oklaed
A1: Not sure exactly. So many students have baggage and lash out or close down, I just know that you have to find a way to connect with all of them #OklaEd
A1 Not a new phenom, but glad it’s being better recognized as many students face highly difficult/traumatic situations daily, esp those in poverty. Others may experience a 1- time traumatic event that makes school topics insignia to #oklaed
A1: My first year teaching: principal tells me I have one student in my Reading remediation class first hour.... and to also duck if he swings. #oklaed
A1) Students come to us with all types of experiences. Childhood trauma is connected to behavior because the mind has to find ways to cope and sometimes the behaviors are only an external manifestation of the internal struggle. #oklaed
A2 - It’s a distraction, but one that can be managed if the T is trauma informed. I think it is also good for other Ss to see the T handle a situation calmly & with patience. #oklaed
Key word Cope. In times of despair, we revert back to what we know as a comfort to get past the struggle we are in. The narrative has to change to understanding versus diagnosis. #oklaed#SandmanSensations
A2: It's mostly hard when you don't get any kind of outside help & you have a million other things to do. Teachers want to give everything they can for a student but it's simply not possible when you're one person. It gets draining emotionally and sometimes physically.. #oklaed
A2 You have to manage as best you can. Every student deserves a chance to learn and thrive. It is our job to identify the win and find it. There us always a win. #oklaed
A2: I wish I could say we just roll with it, but they can be incredibly distracting and overbearing for both Ts and Ss, so Ts stress over how to manage them and still let the other Ss learn. #oklaed
A1) Behaviors exhibited my not be correctly interpreted by a classroom teacher. This is why wrap around services are essential to our students overall health. #Oklaed
A-1 They respond in varipus ways. Some hold it in and won't speak at all to the point of being mute, and others are crying out for help through anyway to get your attention.#oklaed
A1: Ss who live in trauma or have experienced trauma may have completely different perceptions from the average student. Low self-confidence, negative outlook on life, and may not trust adults at all. #Oklaed
A2: I try my best to give my students everything I have and remain calm and consistent and loving. However, I wish desperately that they had more access to counseling or specific help at times.. #oklaed
A2. Often times this can be challenging for Ts trying to balance the need of this S as they work to address the content and needs of all Ss. Some may even become distracted/frustrated/discouraged. #OklaEd
A2 Severe behavior concerns can disrupt the learning of other Ss, but T needs to understand that every action, positive or negative, is rooted in something, T needs to find or get assistance finding the cause of neg for the sake of the Ss #oklaed
A2: It wears me out. I want to help, but it affects my efficacy when I feel that I am at fault for not knowing how to help those students. On the other hand, it reminds me why I chose this profession; or rather, it chose me. #oklaed
A2) I’m not only giving them academic support; I need to find a way to give them emotional support, too. I’m challenged, and I find ways to somehow enrich a small part of them. #oklaed
I hate missing tonight’s chat.. it’s been a busy day. @emmausokc built a Gaga ball pit and cleaned up some of the flower beds this evening. I’m so excited #community#oklaed
Q2/A2 #OklaEd Ss may exhibit anxiety & impulsivity in class. More stress = more anxiety. Ts need 2: Focus on rel; promote safety/trust; Respect-engage S gradually; Redirect-teach & reinforce; Pos reinforce mastery and of skills; Pos reinforcement=improves S self esteem.
A2: Students with behavioral issues can cause disruption to the rest of class, and while I understand that we need to find a way to help the student cope, it can't be at the expense of everyone else in the class room #OklaEd
A2: Ss with severe behavior problems can be huge distractions for the teacher, but we need to fully understand the situation and determine the best course of action to take. It's not about us. #Oklaed
A2: Relationships matter. An adult not equipped with the understandings and social cognition of any level of trauma on students may adversely affect relationships that teachers have at students. #oklaED
A3 If there is a way to identify this trend, I know not what it is. I think that we are increasingly aware and slowly becoming better prepared to deal with it. #oklaed
A3: It appears so, but we all like to talk about “the good old days” it could be that we recognize things beyond a students control better now and work to help them and not write them off! #oklaed
A-2...It’s often very difficult & distracting. Jane Nelson’s Positive Discipline is a very good help in identifying issues & ways to cope/thrive. #oklaed
A3 - I have not been teaching long enough to really compare. I do know some of my AP students come from backgrounds and situations that are just unfathomable. They are my superheros for succeeding in life the way they do. #oklaed
A3- I am sure the numbers are staggering, but, honestly, I have always taught where the majority of my Ss have high ACE scores so I’m not sure I’ve seen an increase. BUT I know this - we need resources to truly serve Ss & meet their needs. Period. #oklaed
We have some of the highest statistics for students w these needs based on our incarceration rates, divorce, poverty, teen preg, etc. And we are more aware and in tune to what is causing our Ss behavior challenges as well. #OklaEd
A3 Part of it is largely due to a deeper understanding of trauma and the potential impacts it has on Ss. There is an increase, but how long have we not been identifying it? #oklaed
A2: Challenging students can be overwhelming for teachers. I've seen teachers struggle with a range of things from classroom management and discipline to supporting the behavior-challenged child AS WELL AS the other students. It affects everyone in the classroom #oklaed
A-2 They can make it almost impossible to teach because they are hurting emotionally. If they are misbehaving, they make it difficult for others to learn. We need counselors to help us and more support from social services. #oklaed
A3) The decrease in services avaiable to families and funding in education being low the number of students with trauma-based behavior is significantly higher. The turnover in teachers does not help because it reinforces the instability many of our students experience. #oklaed
We need to try to remember that everyone who walks into a building has the potential to be coming from or going home to a super disruptive location. Don't make every single situation personal. Get to know the students and the staff. #oklaed
I am late but here! Angela Clark Little | @EdmondSchools parent | SVP | co-founder of https://t.co/AqmRkgxF67… | #oklaed advocate | Primary Runoff 🍎 Voter on Aug 28!| Fave superhero is The Flash!
#OklaEd Q3/A3 More OK Schools have more of a low SES (socioeconomic status) S pop in schools. Knowledge base has increased in medical field along with more psychotropic meds 2 address specific mental illnesses. We are learning more & more about PTSD in children.
A3: I think they are increasing because great people (shout out to everyone doing their best to make things better) are taking action to address these problems that may have been ignored in the past. #oklaed
A3: I'm not convinced the numbers are increasing. I think that we as educators are just more cognizant of trigger behaviors and as such respond better to the Ss in our care #OklaEd
A2: Being informed will help tremendously. So often, though we know it’s not, it feels like a personal attack. It can feel like the S is out to get the T for one reason or another, which makes it hard not to react. Being informed, though, will help combat this feeling. #oklaed
A2: Lots 2 say on this but very dependent on class size. I had a S in a class of 15 that did everything 4 me but when moved to a class of 34 w/ me the next year, completely different. I was proud of my ability to differentiate my teaching, but over 30 is crowd control #oklaed
A3) Educators are being educated about trauma based behaviors, so we are focused on that type of learning as we were with ADHD, etc. We’re learning g new things and adjusting all the time. #oklaed
A3: If we have to teach skills for jobs that arent even created yet, then of course we have to teach to Ss that have yet to be labeled or diagnosed #oklaed#movingtarget#teacherproblems#teacherlife
A3: Now we have a name for it, I think they often been unfairly labeled as unmotivated/not caring in the past. We as educators must keep learning ourselves. #oklaed
A3: Numbers don’t lie. I am more interested in how we will put in the work to address trauma based behavior in the schools we serve with equity and dignity. #OklaEd#SandmanSensations
Alot of the time it impacts more of the students as the teacher is working to address/correct those behaviors or prevent the things that trigger the behaviors.
A4 - Not at all which is why we need resources for all Ss. We need counselors who can actually be counselors & not schedulers & credit-checkers. #oklaed
A4) Should they be? Does this fall into a special education category or is there a better intervention available for the student, parents, and teacher? #Oklaed
A4: No they aren't. Many times I think they are "silent" and "strong" with parents who won't or can't intervene on Ss behalf, and students who don't share their lives out of shame or embaressment #OklaEd
Late for #oklaed chat. Sally Tilley Counselor, Lawtonps. Hoping to see our state embrace trauma sensitivity and replace our outdated punitive policies.
A4) I hope not. Special Education students are not the catch-all for problems and they should not be thought of as such. All students regardless of status can suffer trauma, can be in need of help, and be overlooked. We need to pay attention to all of our students. #oklaed
A4. Let’s hope not! If we are working through our Tiered Intervention processes we should not be classifying students that create challenges as SpEd. We definitely need more training and support for Ts in this area & services for families. #OklaEd
A4: In my experience NO. I had students ripped from homes, put on the Dr Phil show and lived in DHS shelters long term. They received no assistance in school and struggled to maintain the grade to put on a football jersey, basketball suit and/or cheer uniform #oklaed
A4 - Not at all which is why we need resources for all Ss. We need counselors who can actually be counselors & not schedulers & credit-checkers. #oklaed
A3 The numbers are certainly increasing. I'm starting my 46th year. More students have a parent in prison. More come to us in foster care. More parents are on drugs, mothers, too. The very fabric of family is fraying away.#oklaed
A4. Let’s hope not! If we are working through our Tiered Intervention processes we should not be classifying students that create challenges as SpEd. We definitely need more training and support for Ts in this area & services for families. #OklaEd
Q4/A4 #Oklaed No, not necessarily. Shortage of School Psychs in our state impacts the #s identified. The 🔑 is to appropriate identify as early as possible in order to implement interventions. Some of these Ss may also be gifted, so they act out when they think they r bored.
A2: When trying to focus on presenting material to prepare for state tests, severe behavioral concerns can sometimes make the environment far too challenging for the teacher.
#OklaEd
No. This is a question that’s two sided. There are students that need to be identified as SPED in order to get the services they need. However, there are some who get marked as SPED when some personnel do not want to take on the responsibility. #oklaed
A4: If only. Many of them haven't told anyone about their trauma, or haven't told someone who could help. Perhaps we could ask if they should be. What modifications could be made in this case? Would it help? #oklaed
A5 - I know Mid-Del is working to become a district full of trauma informed schools. and I look forward to learning more as the process progresses. #oklaed
A5. Probably not nearly enough if we are honest! We are working to put a variety of therapeutic counseling services in for Ss + Family. In most cases we also need to work w the family. For Ts training, lots of support, more training, collaborative convos. #OklaEd
A5: I have no idea... #oklaed I think we're doing a better job of defining a whole child instead of their ability to regurgitate facts, which is in the right direction.
A-4 They may be emotionally disturbed, but not necessarily in need of special education. An interested teacher can make a big difference in a child like this if he/she can also receive counseling. #oklaed
A5: I'm not sure about other districts, but our counselors, social workers, and special ed department are always more than happy to help us in any way. Whether it be questions, suggestions, or training. #Oklaed
Will you stop growing the everlong PD list that @TeachFromHere have put together? This is the list of things Ts need more training for, but districts cannot afford. #oklaed
Q5/A5 #Oklaed Some OK school districts have Social Workers, LPC Counselors, & Beh Spec. All Ok districts have School Psychs, however they r usually testing 4 Sped. Some districts allow a list of approved resources/stakeholders that are brought in 2 assist with these Ss.
A5 I work in a smaller district and individual situations tend to be better known because of relationships in place. We have lots of support in place. #oklaED
A5: I am fortunate to be in a district with a lot of seasoned veterans who know what to do and who to talk to concerning this area of education. If I have any questions, every veteran teacher that I have asked have helped me. We support each other. Longhorns! #oklaed
Jessica Robinson, Social Studies Dept. Chair, SS/ELA Teacher, Tech Coach - Altus Public Schools - late because I’ve been prepping for 9th grade orientation tomorrow! #oklaed
A-5 School funding has been so drastly cut in the last 10 yrs that little has been done. Special education is overloaded and those teachers are very hard to find and hard to keep. #oklaed
A5) @OKCPS through the works of @okcps_bell has a Mental Health Task Force that is looking at how we can better service our students who suffer from trauma. Partnerships and wraparound services are being developed and reformed currently for all schools. #oklaed
When interviewing potential candidates, we have them read an article on S’s introduced 2 trauma 2 activate prior knowledge on how they would address S’s exposed 2 it. When they come in, we reference the article. Once in, we encourage & model culturally relevant pedagogy. #OklaEd
A3: As the numbers increase, one reason why is today's world is able to better label because science behind the study of trauma-based behavior has gotten better over the years. Also, I believe that people are exposing their children to more harmful things.
#OklaEd
A5 This is something I'm growing more passionate about. We MUST allow our counselors to do what they are trained to do, update our policies, and train our teachers to recognize trauma behavior vs bad behavior. #oklaed
A6 - I wish we had the budget to have a social worker or LPC on staff. But there are good resources out there and I know smart passionate people in my district are learning more and more about them and I will get the benefit of their knowledge #oklaed
A6. @OSDE team which includes @KristinAtchley ! Get your team signed up for the Trauma Informed conference in October. It will be 🔥! The best resource right now would be you all, IMO! #OklaEd
A1) Behavioral reactions and emotional state isn’t necessarily based on any observable triggers going on around them. Therefore, you can’t treat them in the traditional “factor 1 + behavior/emotion 1 = consequence 1” manner. #oklaED
A5: When interviewing potential hires, we have them read an article on S’s introduced 2 trauma 2 activate prior knowledge on how they would address S’s exposed 2 it. When T’s come in, we reference the article. Once in, we encourage & model culturally relevant pedagogy. #OklaEd
Q6/A6 #Oklaed In the past 18 yrs, I’ve collaborated w/Variety Care, Red Rock Beh; & YouthCare of OK to name a few w/very positive results. These r approved stakeholders w/OKC community 2 offer specific counseling & parental support. You not only work w/the S, but also families.
A6: needs to put some money back into heath services for parents, kids, and families... just a thought and I know you can't just throw money at it, but it sure can help. #oklaed
A4: I do not believe all Ss are identified as special education because not all need to be. However, maybe we should do a better job in helping these students succeed in the classroom.
#OklaEd
A6 District wide, we need to have a solid understanding of trauma and it how it affects Ss. It starts at the top with Admin who want to see this change. #oklaed
Last year the Saranac Jr/Sr High teachers didn't pass out a single syllabus on the first day of school. The entire day was filled with team building to launch our Positive School Climate effort. #HackLearning
A2: In my own experiences at the HS level these behaviors tend to make it difficult for the student to be in the classroom, complete assignments, be present etc. and for me there is a need to get to the crux of that with the student. #oklaed
A6 #OklaEd Nurses in schools are another valuable resource in the school building. Dealing w/dispensing meds prescribed by a physician is very important. Timing of the meds is also a large piece of the Ss behavioral & academic success.
A6: I do not know of any readily available resources that my school has. but my peers show what it means to take care of those who need it, even though we may not be licensed to do it. #oklaed
A7: Not the PC answer, but they make us accept bad behavior, which gets us into thinking it is normal or acceptable, which then makes us less aware of smaller issues and threats that might crop up. #oklaed
A7 - They only impact if there isn’t a plan in place w/how to help that Ss. If people in the building know a plan of action if a S has an outburst, than you can limit any security/safety issues. #oklaed
A7: can be detrimental if the school/district doesn't address this with a growth mindset. If our "why" is to help every kid, then How and What we do does NOT line up with punish, mediate, remove! #oklaED
A2) Depends on many factors...in some cases, it can empower T’s as they navigate the situation and est a strong relationship with the S; in others, it can go as far as to drive a T away from the profession. #oklaED
And if you don’t have an @KristinAtchley, then the @k20center has some research briefs and PD that correlates to culturally relevant pedagogy that can be customized for your schools 😉 #oklaed@bridgestyler
A7: Initially they may be identified as a threat. That’s why it’s critical to get to know the “why” behind the behavior. Somebody must connect with them. I tell the students to make sure they have at least 1 “go to” person in the building #oklaed
A7: We have to separate them from other individuals; this disrupts the flow of instruction sometimes. Other than that, I have not experienced any major security issues yet. #oklaed
A3: I believe there are not just socioeconomic changes happening but the barriers surrounding mental illness for example are beginning to change. Which allows a space for students who have experienced trauma to receive help, and feel comfortable enough to discuss it. #oklaed
Intertwines with our #Oklaed chat tonight. It’s not just an Oklahoma issue. The perspective broadens when we address the grand scheme. Become proactive in discussions with all Ss. Open dialogue with all Ss ensures they learn strategies before issues arise.
Tonight's chat is about 3B's:
BELIEVE in your students.
BUILD stronger relationships.
BRING positive energy.
And of course, it's #FutureDriven where we're preparing students for the world they'll live in, not the one we grew up in.
A7: Probably not popular opinion, but if a student is a SEVERE behavioral problem, then they should be isolated for their own safety and the security of the rest of the student population #OklaEd
A7 #Oklaed This specific S population r easy targets 4 bullies. At times, these Ss have very poor comm skills. Teaching Ss 2 advocate 4 themselves is 🔑. Ts that wk directly w/these Ss: Ts voice need 2 be calm if the S beh escalates. Never scream or directly point finger at S.
Depending on how they react/act out, maybe not any more than any other S. Any S that chooses to react physically, verbally or in a threatening way can all impact security/safety. We shouldn’t automatically ‘label’ these Ss as a threat to our school. We need awareness. #OklaEd
A7: They can impact their immediate classroom, especially if the teacher is not well-trained in this area or if they do not have identified triggers. This is more likely to be a problem for a S who moves in in the middle of the year with little info from prev. school. #oklaed
A7) Behavioral problems go hand-in-hand with safety and learning. Continuing education through safety techniques associated with learning and keeping educators aware is a necessity. #oklaed
A6 District wide, we need to have a solid understanding of trauma and it how it affects Ss. It starts at the top with Admin who want to see this change. #oklaed
A8 - Schools that become a safe place for students. Ts that seek authentic healthy relationships with Ss where they can be known emotionally in a way that allows them to grow academically. This is not easy but it is what our Ss need and deserve #oklaed
A8 #oklaed Hopefully a higher level of acceptance of trauma as a dx, treatment for those students, training for staff, and better education for Ss. We have to treat trauma holistically.
A7 #Oklaed Sped Ts that work in a self-contained class: Never wear lanyards; have dull scissors, recognize that paper clips & sports can be used as possible weapons. T, make your body language non-threatening. Very important.
A-7 They have a great negative impact if there is a melt down. They find it hard to talk about it. Sometimes you don't know the trigger. Some melt downs can cause physical harm to other students and the teacher. Everyone stays on edge. #oklaed
A8. The future looks bright & hopeful bc we are coming to awareness and bringing in resources and training. @oksde and @joy4ok are doing a great job of bringing this to our state. This is so needed! Ts and Ss deserve it. #OklaEd
A8: I only hope that the more exposure and education we receive when working with trauma-based behaviors, the more empathetic we can be towards each other. #oklaed
A7 There has to be a plan in place.
There REALLY needs to be relationships in place in these situations, too. I have seen it go really smooth with severe behavior Ss. Really no reason for it not to if you are on top of it. #oklaed
A3b: Experiencing childhood trauma made me good at keeping my home life a secret, making it difficult to be emotionally available and ASK for help. It took me a long time to be comfortable to discuss the abuse I was seeing, and it started with teachers. #oklaed
A8: Schools well versed in practices that encourage: Restorative justice. Customized learning/behavioral plans. Seeking to understand and not to be understood because one size fits one. 🎤 #Oklaed#SandmanSensations
A8) Anytime we can increase services that impact a student's well being - we are #winning. It takes investment in these "non-classroom" (smh) areas of public ed.
#oklaed
A8: I honestly dont know.
Thats like asking, what will it look like when, education in the 21st century and teaching to the new (17th most rigorous) standards gets fully funded?
Dont ask tough questions!
#oklaed
A3) I think awareness can explain some of the perceived increase. But also, when there is a state-wide issue of a lack of focus on education which lasts for far too long, then a generational pattern of ACE’s emerges and becomes pervasive. #OklaED
A8 More aware definitely. Far better prepared to serve these Ss and less inclined to incorrectly label them as special education students, etc. #oklaed
A5 This is something I'm growing more passionate about. We MUST allow our counselors to do what they are trained to do, update our policies, and train our teachers to recognize trauma behavior vs bad behavior. #oklaed
A8 #Oklaed Knowing that 💰 is tight 4 Supts & districts, please consider investing in Soc Workers, LPC Counselors, AND appropriate Prof Development training in this area. Lack of beds in our OK mental health facilities also is challenging. Consider day treatment facilities.
A9 - I would love my teammate to simply know what ACEs are and how they impact behavior. I think we have to start at the basics w/what trauma is. #oklaed
A9 I would like them to know and really have a heart for the fact that far too many of our Ss come to us from abjectly horrifying situations. Trauma responses are unavoidable for many. These Ss need us. #oklaed
patrons and #OKleg needs to see that in the percentage they are mandating that schools spend on students. How can you not include media specialists, counselors, LPCs, etc. #oklaed

A9: Ss are doing the best they can, every day. If we truly believe that, we will look for the “why” behind the behavior. There is always an unmet need there... we just have to find it. #oklaed
A4) No, and I would hope that they all wouldn’t be. Special education isn’t the answer for all students with trauma-based concerns. This is why multi-tiered systems of support are so vital. #OklaED
A8. The future looks bright & hopeful bc we are coming to awareness and bringing in resources and training. @oksde and @joy4ok are doing a great job of bringing this to our state. This is so needed! Ts and Ss deserve it. #OklaEd
A9: (most of my teammates are amazing) most of the time I just want them to see them as the people they are...I think some educators think “student” is some other species. They are PEOPLE. #oklaed
A9: the trauma can be temporary from military parents being deployed or them coming back from deployment. Reach out to their parents and even their base for support and resources! #oklaed#militarychild
I want all my teammates (our staff) to have an understanding of the signs and signals that create some of the behaviors we see and struggle w as educators. Understanding leads to hope, knowledge is power 💪🏼!! #OklaEd
A10: I am a freeze person so I never understood fight or flight (less so fight) and am working hard to recognize those kids are in the same brain space as I have been, just reacting differently. That’s huge b/c then I have a better basis to start.. #oklaed

A5) NPS as a district trauma and resiliency committee comprised of staff and As from every school. This committee meets regularly & est individualized plans of execution at the site level. Also, there is the presence of trauma-informed conversation from the top down. #OklaED
A10) As an educator I need to not only continue to educate myself about trauma, I need to continue to learn to be more empathetic than last year, and next year be more empathetic than this year, etc. I can always make myself a better teacher...even after 34 years. #oklaed
A10 - I will not let any S sneak under my radar. I had a hard yr last yr - 6 of my Ss attempted suicide & there were a couple that I had no idea were suffering. I can’t let a moment go by w/o asking if a S is okay. #oklaed
A-10 I will do what I have been doing. I will be that teacher who goes the extra mile to reach that child. I will be that teacher that makes him/her believe in himself. I can't change the trama, but I can be there for the child. #oklaed
A10: I am a freeze person so I never understood fight or flight (less so fight) and am working hard to recognize those kids are in the same brain space as I have been, just reacting differently. That’s huge b/c then I have a better basis to start.. #oklaed
A10 Be more aware and ready to provide or find the in-the-moment support that these Ss need the best I can. Learning isn't going to occur if active trauma response is happening. It is our job to work through this. #oklaed
Hope that makes sense. Not that I’ve been through anything like my kids sometimes have BUT to be able to recognize “oh, this kid is feeling that right now and very little is going to stop it until they get out of that”. We just need understanding. #oklaed
A10: I am a freeze person so I never understood fight or flight (less so fight) and am working hard to recognize those kids are in the same brain space as I have been, just reacting differently. That’s huge b/c then I have a better basis to start.. #oklaed
Continue to stress relationships, bring in training and resources for Ts and Ss. Keep the awareness alive. We continue to try to provide more wrap around services for our Ss & families. These things will spill over to helping Ts. Keep convos open & ongoing. Partnerships! #OklaEd
A7: All a part of being intentional on est. a safe learning environment. Informing S’s &T’s of the expectations &holding them accountable. Reminding either thru the process of their status in the current situation helps soften the impact of school security & safety #Oklaed
Just got in from a last minute roadtrip to Texas. Realized I've practically missed the #oklaed chat hosted by @KristinAtchley . Frowned for a minute and then consoled myself with my @Buccee snacks. #sundaynightblues
Hated to miss the #OklaEd chat tonight. Had friends over and talked right through it! Great topic though. I’ll have to go back and read the highlights!

Bonus: Re-emphasize to myself and staff that every decision and discussion should be filtered through the lens of are we "caring, committing, and changing the lives of our students." #oklaED
To teach Ts about trauma and it's negative affects, to help others learn how to approach students in a way that's sensitive to their needs. To bring change to my district. #oklaed
Bonus - I want to be more intentional about helping Ss find their voice. I think I try to do this, but I want to really be intentional about helping them use their experiences as tools to empower them. #oklaed
A10b: Having relationships is crazy important, but I need to explicitly teach how to be a good friend as well as model it, to show all Ss why we need to treat each other this way. Then I need to never back down on my kindness, even if I have to “lose” an argument. #oklaed
Bonus. #Oklaed To make a difference with as many Students w/trauma based behaviors. To support OK families whose children are challenged w/beh. If you improve the behavior, u will also improve their academic achievement & quality of life.
