#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, where you teach and what subjects! I am Kristin and teach ELA and SS in Lansing, Michigan! I will be moderating tonight's chat! I have missed all of you and am happy to be here tonight!
Good evening and glad to be back with #6thchat!

A) I reset by looking over what I've accomplished in 2018. Through reflection, I am able to determine how I need to "reset" as a teacher. For example, I am resetting with a return to more authentic experiences & student led opportunities. #6thchat
A1: A little lost this New Year’s, honestly. Don’t see much changing until I’m walking again, but don’t see how that’s going to happen with my crazy awesome life. 😬 it’s a catch 22 and I’m stuck. #6thchat
A1 I like to introduce #oneword for our time back. It's one word that they strive to achieve. We make a slide deck and put our word under our classroom posters so they can see it for the rest of the year.
#6thchat
Yes, excellent. That...and having my clothes ready for every day during the week. I do that on Sunday, meal prep and lesson plan...the week is great at that point! #6thchat
A1) The past couple of days have been all about reconnecting and reminding students that they matter and are in a safe and structured learning environment. #6thchat
Yes, I do that too! I do it at the beginning of the school year, but we revisit at the start of the New Year. Some kids keep their words and others adjust now that they know what it is about. #6thchat
Good thoughts...especially knowing many come from unstructured or chaotic living situations. They need to know what to expect and that they are part of a valued team. #6thchat
A2) We revisit the growth mindset and study what "Resolutions" are, why they work, and why they don't; we explore the "one word" idea and do a lesson on that (hyperdoc), and then spend a bit of time reviewing procedures and expectations. #6thchat
Yes!!! I tell them that your mind craves structure. I don't know about you but holidays are a bit hard because my routines are off. #NeedTheStructureToo#6thchat
A2 Most recently received some form of currency during Christmas, so we are jumping into a stock market simulation (even though most of their money is long gone by now). #6thchat
A2) We do the #OneWord challenge. It helps them get through the end of 6th and start junior high. Such a great reflective opportunity.
Thank you, @JonGordon11, for leading the charge. #6thchat
A3) I've used "mindful" in the past & came back to it w/the 2019 calendar turn. I feel like tech sometimes pulls me further from people as I try to video, take pics, or comment instead of actually spending time, experiencing the joy, noticing the "now" & being mindful #6thchat
A3) I've had joy, intention, authentic, & present 4 my #OneWord. This year I've chosen the "enough". As in, I am enough. No more trying to prove myself, impress others, or work myself to the bone. I am enough. #6thchat (There I said it. I wasn't sure if I would share the word.)
I am so happy you shared your word with us. It is fantastic. Wonderful #oneword. It is inspiring. We are all "enough". Wish I had thought of that one! Maybe next year! #6thchat
A4) This year it is important that I focus on maintaining balance between my professional and personal lives. I need to continue to take care of myself, and so I begin again in 2019 with renewed commitment to this overarching goal and make my plans with this in mind. #6thchat
A3: My #oneword2019 is REBORN. I'm taking life and busting out of the funk. Started running again in November and have completed 41 days in a row of a mile or more. I'm also looking to bring back some of the teaching methods I ditched when I went to my new school. #6thchat
A4: My goal for this year is to provide myself with more wellness time and take care of my personal self. I think this will help me be better for my family at home and at school. #6thchat
A4 I'm tired of the things that have been wearing on me for a while, and I have decided to be proactive in order to get those things to change. With that, some feelings will be hurt for the better good. #6thchat
#6thchat Just lurking for a few… had to take my Google 1 & 2 recertification exams before they expired. Good news, I’m still certified! Must work on trainer recertification next! (not tonight!!) #cathedsocial#aobedchat#googleEDU#edtechteam
A5) Sketchnoting and Zentangles or Zen Doodles, writing & reading for pleasure. These 3 areas are focus points for me this year as I try to get in touch with my more creative self. #6thchat
I totally agree, my kids are still coming back with bleary eyes cause they aren't used to getting up early. One student told me that his mom had to wake him up because he slept through his alarm.
#6thchat
Their little faces have been so tired by the end of the day. But they still stay with us. : ) I stopped my afternoon lesson early and we played Simon Says. #6thchat
A4 I want to connect with other classrooms from other places, I want to go beyond mystery hangouts. I also want more student centered ideas..maybe Genius Hour type assignment
#6thchat
A6) Professional goals: I am interested in looking at coaching opportunities or at least learning more about how to better/best support teachers. #6thchat
I am also planning to have students create a "vision board" with their one word as a focus and then images that support their ideas for their word. Hands on activity vs. tech though. #6thchat
A7) Students set their own goals, and then, we celebrate as a class at the conclusion of each quarter. I like to have Ss write about what worked, what could have gone better, and how they would approach a goal differently the next time--keep it authentic. #6thchat
The @ReadWithMalcolm is amazing. I love Malcolm Mitchell's story...talk about growth mindset. I have shared his interviews and videos with my kids. His message resonates with my students and it is having an impact. #6thchat

A8) I am also interested in having some guest moderators. If you'd like to moderate, feel free to fill out this spreadsheet by selecting a date/topic. https://t.co/ewSK9qwqxh#6thchat
A8) What thoughts do folks have about moving from an hour #6thchat to a 40-45 minute chat? It seems like a lot of folks need to leave about 40 min to 45 min. in? Perhaps reducing by 15 min. would help? Thoughts?
Thanks everyone for coming to #6thchat. Get excited for next week as it is one of my favorite #6thchats! The 3rd Annual Best of the Best Books for Teachers & Students Awards (as we nominate and select them)! Come ready to talk books, & open the library or Amazon cart! #6thchat
