Welcome to tonight’s chat!
I'm Pam from Southern Indiana. eLearning Coach for MSD of MV.
I’m Keshia Seitz, Director of Innovative Learning for Five-Star Technology Solutions. Pam and I are excited for tonight's chat!
Please let us know who you are, where you’re from, and what you teach/do
I'm Mike and I'm at Indiana University. I teach preservice Ts all about technology integration. Excited for the chat!
I'm Paige- Second Grade Teacher at MSD Steuben County :)
Welcome and thanks for joining!
Good evening! Lucas Calhoun here, Innovatie Learning Specialist with Five-Star Technology Solutions stationed at Bedford NLHS
When you constantly reload Twitter because you are THAT excited for tonight's chat
Thanks and for taking on tonight's topic! are you ready for IN DigCitWeek? Michelle with the INeLearn team.
I am so glad that you are a part of our chat tonight! You should invite your Ss to participate/host with us sometime!
When you cannot spell your title correctly because you are excited
Hi ! Diana here- tech coach from
Welcome, ! Glad you could join us tonight!
So glad to see you tonight, Mr. Lucas!
That made my day, ! I hope others out there who feel the same. Will your class be participating in IN DigCitWeek?
R1: Because the importance of does not end when a student leaves the classroom
Brandy Hicks Milan Community Schools Tech Integration
Same to you I've been looking forward to this all week.
So happy you've joined us!
R1- When parents call tech to see if we can shut off S's computer past 9 pm for them.
R1 Dual-need in my mind. One to continue the learning at home, but P/Gs are digital citizens themselves. Two, learning both ways
Also some should hopefully be participating tonight, or at lurking :)
Steve from Valpo HS. My Thursday night: Football broadcast prep & helping my 6th grader w/math & one eye on chat.
R1: Digital citizenship doesn't end when they leave school, parents need to make sure their kids are good people online too.
R1 My top reason is because we are all learning TOGETHER, plus schools need everyone on the team!
THAT is a HOOT!! I believe I've heard that one before!
Agreed! I think it becomes even more important when Ss leave our care and go into the world in which they live.
R1: It is twice as important now than it's ever been. Technology is everywhere and digital citizenship doesn't stop at school!
R1 Been promoting heavily the Google Classroom Guardian notification for that exta boost to avoid "we don't have any homework."
I definitely agree that it is a shared responsibility.
Late but here- Allison , digital learning coach from Lanesville!
Robbie - eLearning Specialist from MSD Wayne Twp.
We don't mind! Glad you are here!
R1: Because everyone can benefit from education!
That is awesome! I'm thankful for good Ts like you who help keep their Ss connected! :-)
7th grade, actually, but who's counting?
my internet went out for a moment and I was losing my mind. I need this chat tonight!
BIG AL!!!!! So happy to "see" you tonight! I've missed you since last week! :-)
True, . One step further would be that we want our kids to have positive dig identities-neutral isn't good enough
R1 Just the idea of P/Gs discussing with students makes me smile.
Thank you!! They're all really excited for it, it was a wonderful experience last fall for my students then as well
A2: I am sending out bi-weekly messages to parents. They appreciate the resources.
R2- sharing resources, having parent nights, social media.
I thought you were sitting out tonight :) No rest for my moderator team apparently!
R2: As a P, I want to be asked to be involved. I want to support the T, so for me, it comes down to good, consistent communication
Tammy from Southwood Jr Sr HS math and Spanish
Tiny bit late, but I'm Jordan, a senior preservice teacher at IU! Really into & learning more about !
R2: I have not in the past, but I would like to. Educating Ps will help educate the Ss by reinforcing lessons at home!
R2 Never. Stop. Discussing. The importance of is real, everyday. Formally, casually, etc. Work that dialogue.
R2: We've had technology PD for parents. Digital Citizenship is an upcoming topics for one of those sessions.
This topic is too good and very timely!
R2 - Also, I wonder how often we ask our Ps how they want to be involved, or what they can contribute...anyone do this?
R2 It's been a while since I was the T but even in early 2000s it went in the syllabus-more netiquette info then
I want to hear more about this!
R2: In my past schools we would have evening meetings, but it was never the most successful strategy :(
I love that you emphasize that it is indeed a conversation - not just a flyer sent home with facts.
we don't keep track of attendance ;) Late comers always welcome good to see you back!
R2 Focus on Ss of course, but in my convos as admin, I asked a lot about what that topic 'means' to P/Gs, getting the scoop
R2 parent night the last two years. Plus a workshop. It's just the beginning for Dig Cit
We've tried parent nights but few showed. Had back to school tech night b4 school started to get devices early. Largest turnout
So did you try something more successful? https://t.co/ymIfMrrX7w
R2: In my past schools we would have evening meetings, but it was never the most successful strategy :(
That's good thing about a community approach-more engaged leaders can lead smaller events at varied times https://t.co/yO2govnnsX
R2: In my past schools we would have evening meetings, but it was never the most successful strategy :(
R2: We are starting a monthly digcit newsletter specific to parents. Looking for other ideas tonight.
I have three Ts who are going through admin program so we have planned with them to develop the PD. Our 1st one was Canvas
R1 Parents need to know what Ss do with their lives 24 hours a day. We only have Ss for 7 hrs. Many opps to get in touch w/world
My experience too, -tie event to a tangible!
This is a great idea! Could you share one? https://t.co/VYkAqXn7Iy
R2: We are starting a monthly digcit newsletter specific to parents. Looking for other ideas tonight.
R2: Hit hard at orientation with fams, but Parent "University" Nights are in the works.
R2 As leaders modeling is of the UTMOST importance when communicating with P/Gs. Especially with social media and outside comm.
We tried newsletters too, but also not the most successful. In short, we never found a great strategy to get Ps involved
So glad you have chosen education
Hopefully, we'll hear some tonight! https://t.co/5JO6sL06Xn
We tried newsletters too, but also not the most successful. In short, we never found a great strategy to get Ps involved
Good starting place, . Have you considered a Pinterest board-advertise that you have it in the newsletter
Totally impt. I think some Ps need 2learn how 2b good examples online bc many Ps are navigating themselves https://t.co/99tqSdvT4o
R2: I have not in the past, but I would like to. Educating Ps will help educate the Ss by reinforcing lessons at home!
R2: I'm doing a wrkshp for Anderson. I'll be 1 of 3 topics for the night. Ps will travel to other topics thru the night
Just my 2c, it seems that you need to get the message to where Ps are already!
R2 I use parent connect on LMS: Edmodo, giving parents insight to same information as Ss
Sure! Give me a few days ;)
R3: Maybe an incentive for Ss for bringing their Ps to the event? Prizes for top class particip? https://t.co/sXNjTxg0pD
we struggled w something similar. Few showed even after any requested a digcit parent night
R3, Just because P/Gs and Ss are on devices more than ever, dialgoue led by both sides is vital. Time on device doesn't=mastery
R3 Love the idea of Ss teaching Ps on - help them become experts in school so they can bring the knowledge home!
R3 I think the challenge is for us to design reasons/opportunities for Ss to talk to Ps about the topic
R3: One possibility: Ss sharing out tools they've learned at school w/Ps. Convo: how they translate to life "after school".
R3: Many of our Ps haven't grown up in or been exposed to all the diff social media kids use. Ps need to stay knowledgeable
R3 EX-if you participate in DigCitWeek dress-up-share the list of days w/parents but don't include the topics-encourage convo
R2: we did move to an empowered use policy &r presenting our 8 ideas in small chunks by grade level w student-made videos
One of the many resources for families during IN DigCitWeek is Family Device Agreements - great tool for discussing/negotiating
I'd love to see those videos! https://t.co/hCGzhvWQM0
R2: we did move to an empowered use policy &r presenting our 8 ideas in small chunks by grade level w student-made videos
R3 have parents and student make a video/meme together. Tweet it out fun competition
We had some of our older Ss do PSAs for the younger Ss and then shared with Ps. https://t.co/SS2WitiwHB
R2: we did move to an empowered use policy &r presenting our 8 ideas in small chunks by grade level w student-made videos
Love the Empowered Use Policy! It seems like tech would be less a privilege and more a right! https://t.co/P0I1K9bjzc
R2: we did move to an empowered use policy &r presenting our 8 ideas in small chunks by grade level w student-made videos
LOVE this idea! https://t.co/boncmzRvJ6
R3 have parents and student make a video/meme together. Tweet it out fun competition
I agree! R3: If we can create moments/opps for empowerment, Ss led conversations w/Ps would & could be powerful!
R3 have students create information for Ps on how to protect their digital identity ;)
Lanesville & have an awesome EUP, setting the bar for what these policies should look like and feel like.
Cool Cool! I am intrigued by this! Were these for only home devices or added-in with school-issued as well?
R3 Parents like their children on video: anything publicized with their child (promos for our PBIS, competitions, etc.) gets views
they are designed for home use, but there are all sorts of possibilities
R4. Definitely cyberbullying and what to do about it. How to be a good citizen online and offline. Tips from Ts would help
R4, Maybe a bit too meta, but the topic of 'why and what do you feel' right before you post seems important to convo.
I will definitely share some! Some def need some editing but was GREAT convo about policy &age appropriate interpretation.
R4: How can I (as a P) help my child? How can I monitor? How can I have discussions w/ my S at home?
R4- Balance of time, modeling behavior, privacy.
R4: Also, What opportunities are there for digital leadership for my S? How can I find these opportunities?
This reminds me, I saw a great post on why Ps should ask their children for perm to post photos we can be the worst!
R4. Have you ever encountered a situation online that made you feel sorry for someone else?
A4 Online safety and security in a digital world. How to navigate the "mean online streets" safely
R3 My kids create our weekly updates via video. They could create some spots about the lessons we are doing with
Yaaaasssssss!! https://t.co/oRkJTwSZdO
R4: How can I (as a P) help my child? How can I monitor? How can I have discussions w/ my S at home?
Hello all - dropping in for a bit from class
Balance of time is a good topic for parents. I have to make a conscious effort sometimes to set my phone down at home
R4 my Tech Ss asked what social media you use as a starting place for community survey. Awareness
R4: Show parents what apps and websites students are using the most. Show them the "hidden" apps as well.
I like that Empowered Use Policy is concise, on point, & easy 2 guide convos. Who actually read the 7 page responsible use?
Hey neighbor! Glad to have you!
R4: Show parents how tech can be used effectively and in a positive manner. Not just the negative parts of tech.
R4: Protecting identity as well as social & emotional learning in cyberspace just like face to face interactions.
R4 - Should we be asking the parents what they need to know about SM & digital life? Where their comfort level is?
yes! We need to model the behavior we want to see in our Ss
R4 Give easy to implement strategies and ideas that they can put into practice right away, not hard to follow overly wordy AUPs
R4. "Show me an app that will make my life better"
We have that conversation in our home too! The 15yo holds us accountable developing norms w/ https://t.co/uE999ptZ8H
Balance of time is a good topic for parents. I have to make a conscious effort sometimes to set my phone down at home
R4: Parents need to know their child's public image/reputation is at stake w/use of social sites; keep it + but let them see risk
Aww thanks & 4ur help. Ss actually know it now. No One knew our policy before. They do now! https://t.co/nZnzHdVghF
Lanesville & have an awesome EUP, setting the bar for what these policies should look like and feel like.
Absolutely, and Common Sense Education provides so many great resources to open those conversations https://t.co/D2UMvsM6sQ
R4 - Should we be asking the parents what they need to know about SM & digital life? Where their comfort level is?
You have an awesome tech leadership team who dreamed these ideas up! I love it! Your Ss are lucky to have you guys!
This is so important for Ss and Ps to have discussions about how tech is a part of Ss daily lives. https://t.co/AxxzVbQj9v
R4: How can I (as a P) help my child? How can I monitor? How can I have discussions w/ my S at home?
R5: Ps have a responsibility to be knowledgeable of issues for personal use in addition to Ss. https://t.co/ExXy8QeaA7
R5 P/Gs are 'citizen no. 1 of the homestead. Act accordingly in all arenas.
R5: The same as non-digital citizenship. Work with them on being awesome, honest, contributing, accepting people online and off
R5. Ps and Ts have responsibility to both teach citizenship. Whether it's digital or not. Technology is an amplifier for behavior
Yes!And we have convo that even though it's a school-issued device, Ps should set limits & locations 2use https://t.co/VaHBpng7PY
Balance of time is a good topic for parents. I have to make a conscious effort sometimes to set my phone down at home
R5 same as everyday life. Lines between on/offline are very very thin
Positively worded as a list of expectations for use (ex. I will be respectful of myself and others).
R5 Ps should have opportunity and responsibility to help child balance use of digital devices, and help them stay focused, on task
R5: be a good example! It's hard to teach when Adults use social media as a means to bully & complain
R5: Ps should be responsible users and demonstrate proper use of tech. i.e. - No tech at dinner, don't text & drive, etc.
R5: that in today's world, D can be just as important as C, & honestly, I'd like the D to go away & be engrained in our norms.
R5 keep expectations positive in tone rather than doom and gloom, "you better not..." statements
R5: Do not avoid convo or arena out of fear.
Isn't this the truth?! We need to get this message out loud and clear! https://t.co/8N6atIIOqF
R5: be a good example! It's hard to teach when Adults use social media as a means to bully & complain
I agree! I admit; I skimmed ours but would a kid even skim it?
R5 so many great responses being shared. I think many times it's to step away from the fear and become educated
R5 - without sounding too grand, is new morality & values talk Ps need to have w/ kids - it is the landscape they live in
R6 sadly, they don't. Seems to be all about what happens at school. I need to do better bridging that gap
R6 Policies and procedures have to start earlier and earlier due to device parity/access. No longer like car at 16...
As am I! Glad offers a Comp. License Addition for those of us interested in !
definitely! It's our device but you are always the parent
R6: Ps should feel included. An admin said sometimes parents are intimidated by what Ts know; I don't want parents to feel that
True, I haven't read the post yet, but I saw: abstinence talks are of the past, now we talk about safe image sharing
R6: ...we don't front load enough digcit, & this leads to REACTIVE steps instead of PROACTIVE steps. Need to change that.
R6: We are learning about how to fix this problem.
Yes!!! https://t.co/MIddHiagrI
R6: ...we don't front load enough digcit, & this leads to REACTIVE steps instead of PROACTIVE steps. Need to change that.
so true. We have had very young Ss bring their phones to school.
My man! Fantastic and true statement. https://t.co/lHUmFPYMDu
R6: ...we don't front load enough digcit, & this leads to REACTIVE steps instead of PROACTIVE steps. Need to change that.
I'd love to see the Dig part of go away. That way the focus is on the Cit and not the Dig.
I have senior daughter (bio major) at IU right now...great place to start life!
R6 Citizenship is ever-evolving and important to landscape, is not mutually exclusive from voting/helping comm, etc.
R5: Ss do what they see, so parents have a responsibility to help reinforce what it means to be a good by modeling it.
I think we will get there, but the gap of understanding is still so wide it's all character education! https://t.co/lrwDl9YfRh
I'd love to see the Dig part of go away. That way the focus is on the Cit and not the Dig.
R7: I'd love to do face to face activities and start a digcit contract night between Ss and Ps, something I heard about from
R7, One initial thing on my mind is a change of tone in convo, not leading implied gossip vibe of "Did you see that on FB?"
R7 someone mentioned it earlier-I love that Remind partnered with Common to create a toolkit!
R7 I think the ideas shared earlier of student created videos & artifacts to explain expectations were absolutely awesome!
R7 Positively praising good moments of and showing the power of it in news stories/community events, etc.
Absolutely! The Dig world is not THAT diff from the Real. Pple just lose their minds on a device https://t.co/m8Lepl1nyE
I think we will get there, but the gap of understanding is still so wide it's all character education! https://t.co/lrwDl9YfRh
I'd love to see the Dig part of go away. That way the focus is on the Cit and not the Dig.
We are looking at having a possible teen panel on the PT conference night. We will see how it works.
R7: having Ss fun ways communicate. Memes. Fake news. Music videos. Creating family expectations together. https://t.co/REe5kPaekt
R7: I like 's use of and totally dig the idea of PSAs starring Ss to share w/peers, Ps, & community.
R7: Maybe not the most creative, but invite Ps into the clsrm! They love to see what's going on, & they can reinforce mess. @ home
Simple but VERY effective strategy! This is perfect! https://t.co/JQXTQO360d
R7: Maybe not the most creative, but invite Ps into the clsrm! They love to see what's going on, & they can reinforce mess. @ home
R7 I don't like to flaunt my rap skills! And does a killer running man! https://t.co/3CBUZBP3bq
R7. I heard does a pretty amazing rap video. ;)
I agree-the correlations are there, but the concept of constantly being accessible is something new to negotiate
R7 Again w/meta vibe, but putting down devices at supper time/car and just having face-to-face conversations strengthens bonds too
I hadn't considered that. I'm thinking more about the complexities of online presence.
Sometimes you gotta just toot your own horn! Nobody else can tell your story better! https://t.co/YtIb5SaA84
R7 Positively praising good moments of and showing the power of it in news stories/community events, etc.
Q7: Have students create videos on what it means to be a & share w/ Ps on LMS, , via e-newsletter(),etc.
R7: Our core value this month is citizenship- happy to connect our activities as part of this
R7. developing community with Ps/Ts/Ss. Hosting a night to establish ideas together. Activities https://t.co/REe5kPaekt
You're right:I think it will be this way some day Ss will not know life apart from tech. https://t.co/zNVf2OY6ev
I'd love to see the Dig part of go away. That way the focus is on the Cit and not the Dig.
Absolutely!! https://t.co/xI01wRFtC2
You're right:I think it will be this way some day Ss will not know life apart from tech. https://t.co/zNVf2OY6ev
I'd love to see the Dig part of go away. That way the focus is on the Cit and not the Dig.
R7: Ts should present expectations in their virtual classroom (LMS) just as they do for their own physical classroom.
It's all about living the life https://t.co/1CYPz2aP6v
Right. We are still trying to get Ts to think of digcit as part of curriculum rather than a stand alone convo
R8 Apps like & are great, but I think face to face communication when possible means so much more
R8- I think you need a diverse way to communicate. Between websites, social media, remind, s'more, emails...
Nothing beats F2F IF you can get them there.... https://t.co/f8JKiBVP7D
R8 Apps like & are great, but I think face to face communication when possible means so much more
this is why I firmly believe educators need to first see themselves as relevance.
A...to the...MEN!!! https://t.co/a1UlGMSQQh
this is why I firmly believe educators need to first see themselves as relevance.
and also why educating our Ts on this is just as important as educating the Ss
R8 The trick is not to be discouraged when you can't reach ALL parents. That you continue to make that effort!
some random positive notes about my Ss always helps as a P. What did my S do well? How did S help others? https://t.co/qOZLU5iDbc
R8 Apps like & are great, but I think face to face communication when possible means so much more
R8 Digital or not, P/Gs want to know their S is CARED for...this makes all communications more real and productive.
R8: I use email, Twitter, Class Website, Paper/Digital Newsletters, Remind101, Class Dojo, Phone Calls, and notes.
come to and you'll get to hear me do an Ignite on the topic :) fired up (pun intended)
and I think all of these would be helpful! I'm ready to try them all! https://t.co/lXvANkFG37
R8: I use email, Twitter, Class Website, Paper/Digital Newsletters, Remind101, Class Dojo, Phone Calls, and notes.
R8. Being consistent is key. Similar times. Similar messages. So Ps know what and when to expect. https://t.co/oaWGN2DuzJ
Continue conversations like tonight's in our Indiana Digital Citizenship Community in Google+ https://t.co/mwdsVY8Y3d
Continue conversations like tonight's in our Indiana Digital Citizenship Community in Google+ https://t.co/9U5eL8EMkJ
WRAP-Guardian Notification on Google Classroom is a great and streamlined way to simplify process and share the nuts/bolts
They work! I always say, the more opportunities I create for communication- the more likely I will reach ALL parents!
LW: How do we help those Ss & families who don't have access to the tech outside the classroom to support at home?
WRAP: e-learning days are great for letting parents be a part of education and support digital learning
Wrap: For starters, let Ss use tech to showcase learning to their Ps & not simply as a means to complete a PDF. &Celebrate
thank you! There are so many great ways to communicate with our parents. We as Ts just have to use them :)
WRAP: Educators leading personal life with the integrity of their classroom life
WRAP: Get creative with assignments. Have students question and discuss digcit with parents. Summarize their conversations
WU: Live the life. Ts follow the rules and require Ss to do the same. Ps should see this at home. https://t.co/MFgAwnME1u
WU: Stop assigning posters Parents will love you!
Seriously WU, have parents and students work on a digital project OR have Ss work published and encourage sharing by family
Thanks, everyone for another amazing chat tonight! I love chatting with you all!
Here's an example from today. He was going to go home and show mom what he learned & accomplished. https://t.co/bSw9VGBMXj
