Hi Dan! I hope you're doing super well my friend! Hope to meet you soon!
Agreed ! Like we've got the band back together! Perhaps tonight's movie is Ocean's 11?
Let's get started!
Q1:Think abt your favorite lesson to teach; What's the topic & how was it introduced? https://t.co/xTZoHg4DDY
launching resources for Ts 5/16. San Diego. Footloose.
Good to finally be able to participate full on again!
Thanks Shauna! We got waylaid by an ice and sleet and yuck storm today; back at it tomorrow!

Something I've been working on this wk is designing dream high school. Love for participants to share https://t.co/iPCHfdrsCM
Howdy Ellen! I'm going to be out your way in mid-March, believe it or not.
I'd also say Anne of Green Gables the PBS movie haha
That's my parents' high school experience...
Hi ELLEN...my good design friend!!
Are you claiming you haven't been tormented, Lisa? ;P
Just walking in the door from work at 9:08 PM-exhausted, but wanting to say hello to
A1: I don't know if I have a favourite lesson to teach. I get most excited w new ideas, things that are generated by the Ss
A1: I love kicking off a new project - look through curriculum expectations w Ss, set goals, scaffold
A1: it's when I introduce Ss to their strengths - love that they realize we ALL have strengths. Boosts esteem for many.
A1 love teaching electricity Box of materials & a challenge “Get the lightbulb 2 light.” Oh U cant talk 2 partner except on paper
stay with me on this one. pick an easy "would be" topic
I'm Jamie from AR...middle school technology & first timer tonight/Short Circuit
Interesting! I'd love to hear more!
yay Eric! Now go to bed. ;)
A1 my fav way to launch is through fieldwork
An actual, legitimate vacation. Seriously. Partner and I are spending a week with Monterey as base camp
quick Q2:The intro is a form of Discovery. How can Ss KEEP TRACK of the findings? Brainstorm some ideas https://t.co/uhbZVEmxcw
Hi Eric.. please find a comfy chair, a frosty beverage, and eat some comfy food
lol well I guess you might say my approach to education IS surreal to many so maybe Frida and I are more alike
oohh ohhh can I watch the fountains?
I love this! I used to have "No talking Thursday afternoons"
Hi ! Is that your descriptive movie choice or your name for tonight's ? ;P
Can you give me an example?
A1: I love lessons that have a great hook that completely catches students off guard. Something that messes w/a misconception
introduce topic in a provocative way, let Ss explore, discover, collaborate then discuss.
Hola, Amigo! So, glad you're here!! Always better when you're here!
Q2: Visual journals are when way to quickly capture ideas.
A2 reflections are just as important as findings IMO-video blogging is my fav
like that "messes w misconception"!
A2 get in a habit capturing ideas in a way that works for them offer them choice and time
the idea is to think about ways to introduce a topic as a lead in to Discovery.
A2: Notebook (Imagineering Book - no erasing allowed), collaborative Google Doc, chart paper with sticky notes
A1 I've not DT'd it but I always loved teaching The Crucible b/c I got to intro it with "based on a true story"
A1 Introd Food Bowl - gets Ss excited when explain they will build a structure of their design and all cans donated to hungry
A2: online discussion threads, journaling, animoto or voice thread to name a few..
share some of those examples
Yesterday I saw a project with video ethnography archived with QR codes - by grade one.
A1: Currently, like I'm excited to show my indie Ss how much power they actually have by breaking down "school"
A2 I'm wondering if digital portfolios like or storytelling apps like might help Ss organize their discovery
ex. hearing a passage from a book to introduce a character study lesson
A2 I said I was going to have my Ss make their own journals/notebooks this year & didn't
This is a great way to introduce staff to new driving questions or ideas.
a2: sticky notes. Lots & lots of sticky notes
Just joining from Cambridge, MA post-kids-bedtimes and catching up on the goodness here!
story boarding is another great technique to make thinking visible.
Oh this is different and rad; I know some folks who LOVe a good QR code https://t.co/knl01jVqCu
Yesterday I saw a project with video ethnography archived with QR codes - by grade one.
I look forward to seeing them. You would love then.
Yes! Very powerful both as audience and reflective author.
Heck, now that I think about it for a half a second . . . !
A2 Valuable to give students time, space, direction to explore what note taking strategies work for them individually
you need to try 21st century note booking it's a good fit for your class and style I think!
Go2s: journal sketchbook GDoc Post-its Padlet Out of the Box: Wall of Ideas, Keeper box, Baseball Card Collector
I love this op to find out what works best
Especially them. A little cognitive dissonance goes a long way. :-)
check out 21st century notebook project!
Q3: How can Ss SHARE the connections they made w/ their discoveries? Dig a deeper w/previous brainstorm https://t.co/iYHxJ1O6Oy
A2 Lots of ways to capture discovery: sticky notes, video, pictures, sketches, infographics, flowcharts, sketchnotes, timelines
I totally do -- starting to feel that time crunch of year & figuring what I still have time to tinker with
A2 popular with Ss too - creativity + internalizing + content + concepts
Q3 going back to the roots of the discovery-back to the community of "end user"
Q3 take this discovery from "self" to "others
How DARE you suggest that not one size fits all students ways of organizing & recording information
A3 Gr8 Q Where are the Authentic Sustained Audiences for Students? 4 me: My Twitter PLN Do students have an arena like this?
A3: I think this begins with the project design.Exhibitions, experts giving feedback, cross grade feedback are places to start.
A3: Kids can create:
Slideshow
Drawing/Painting
Graphic Design
Collage
Photo Essay
Animation
Digital Story
Computer Program
A3 processing and debriefing discoveries is critical-discourse plays a big role
A3: I'm a fan of design methods like creative matrix, what's on your radar, affinity maps by fr sharing/comparing
A3: Go out into the school or community to deliver elevator speeches to whomever will listen. Ask those who listen for further Qs
friends I am going to ask you to bend your DT thinking tonight and really reach for connections
RT RT : A little cognitive dissonance goes a long way. :-)
A3: visible thinking routines that help students reflect or headline big ideas
I thought you might be interested :)
Maybe I jumped the gun on this answer… is it asking for Vehicles/Platforms to share or Who to Share
A3 Kids can also create:
Speech
Oral Defense
Live Newscast
Panel Discussion
Play
Musical Piece/Dance
Public Event
Sales Pitch
A3 Get Ss metacognitive & social; connect the dots btw their experiments & their discoveries via blogs https://t.co/hr30FblRtR
Q3: How can Ss SHARE the connections they made w/ their discoveries? Dig a deeper w/previous brainstorm https://t.co/iYHxJ1O6Oy
Agree. Showing multiple approaches can serve as useful provocations for some students.
RT A3: Kids can create:
Slideshow
Drawing/Painting
Graphic Design
Collage
Photo Essay
Animation
Digital Story
love visible and artful thinking routines!!!
you're on target. I want ppl to look for DT practices in everyday teaching
A1:Favorite lesson "Design something that's on your mind"(DT "micro"); A2:Capture what U did/said/thought/felt during (DT "meta")
Our paths cross a little less frequently now, but oh do you know me well! :-)
!!!! Love the idea of elevator pitching EVERYWHERE https://t.co/jSdhguHJDZ
A3: Go out into the school or community to deliver elevator speeches to whomever will listen. Ask those who listen for further Qs
A3 Kids like this stuff too:
Research Report
Letter
Brochure
Script
Blog
Editorial
Book Review
Training Manual
HMW show students/model the world of an amazing PLN and its learning!
A3 I make them talk. To each other not me. Face to face. While maintaining eye contact. Active listening is bonus
Aw, thanks man! Honored to receive the BOOM!
Have you used the project zero visible thinking work?
A3 Kids can create these too:
Proposal
Business Plan
Design
Bid
Estimate
Blueprint
Timeline
Flowchart
A3 Thinking about how using tagging features on might be used to connect dots btw Ss blog posts w prototypes & research
A3 Share outside of school to a variety of authentic audiences
Q3b:Both Ts & Ss are gaining perspective &new POVs abt the topic. HMW enhance this prelim. empathy work? https://t.co/Rl3Gy4cGD7
Look who's en fuego tonight!
! dude walks in and just drops power truth that Ts should be sharing w Ss our PLN strength https://t.co/dgMCd9Dc5H
HMW show students/model the world of an amazing PLN and its learning!
A3 If we're looking at something more formative...maybe a chalk talk, a Visual Thinking Routine, or a simple prototype
yes! was a book club book for most of our Ts.
true -w some Ss it's like pulling teeth to get to this level, they complain when it's slow yet they are making it slow!
How about google hangout elevator pitches with our students?
A3b get Ss out of the classroom and into the community. Field work!
A3b Go to the Users… get outside of yourselves Leave Self—>Seek others happens w/ People + Empathy
A3b: I gotta think that just acknowledging what's happening as empathy work goes a long way to enhance it's impact.
I would be interested in learning more about how you embedded this into practice.
gets a for finding time to before an amazing night of Macbeth in the Bay Area
A3:Pic of students' (college freshmen, not K12 sorry!) joint DT compass ON their class class experience https://t.co/Bg6SDoaP5J
A3 By taking trips to see real life problems - build empathy and find solutions
sounds like ethnographic data collection to me!
A3b Ss pick fave idea, then *surprise* that idea auto eliminated & you have to go with idea/priority of another
Love reading your tweets-but my brain is pudding. Happy chatting all
HMW Ss create a PLN between schools?
They'll be ready to pitch again officially as part of the project in 3 weeks (post spring break)
I'm loving the focus on Experiences! Keep this fire going!
Yes! We have weekly field based learning for classes like https://t.co/9tjvmTho6S
A3 By taking trips to see real life problems - build empathy and find solutions
A3b: How about tying specific behaviors (sees & dos) to specific insights and needs? https://t.co/HGypZx3vqR
Q3b:Both Ts & Ss are gaining perspective &new POVs abt the topic. HMW enhance this prelim. empathy work? https://t.co/Rl3Gy4cGD7
YES! Oh you two are combining tonight! in fact !
yes- lots and lots of exposures in professional learning and unit planning together. Happy to share recent examples
Awesome! The hashtag is just a suggestion. ;)
A gr8 Q Seems Obvious & NoBrainer 4 me Yet Im not a classroom teacher & can only assume the Why Nots I wld utilize 24/7
I have no idea but I think we might be starting right . . . now? https://t.co/mI3jV45QYX
HMW Ss create a PLN between schools?
Okay, I am sure I can make that timeline work.
A3: Give Ss a chance to DO something w/knowledge they are sharing. Connected it to previous ideas. Find an expert. Find a novice
YES! and the use of new lenses in our world
tell me that it's butterscotch
I will be following up on this. You have been warned! ;P
A3) by making the newly acquired knowledge applicable to real life scenarios/problems!
! Loving the ideas on tonight about Ss sharing & building on ideas of others! https://t.co/uUXg4U8aUX
A3b Ss pick fave idea, then *surprise* that idea auto eliminated & you have to go with idea/priority of another
Agreed. I think I'm retiring after tonight. Nowhere to go but down, really. ;)
connecting Ss learning powered by design to change their families, neighborhoods and community.
Most of my PLN were strangers @ 1 point Faceless yet powerful voices…I think there is a misconception/Fear
Q4:Think abt the new concept/skill introduced. What are some real life applications of those skills? https://t.co/nour07XSsF
I find actionable reflection helps—let S's make observations on past + principles/ideas/expmts for future https://t.co/YOIIpCjM5E
true -w some Ss it's like pulling teeth to get to this level, they complain when it's slow yet they are making it slow!
A3b: intentionally finding adults and students to offer feedback, ask questions, gain insight is critical
Social Media is still taboo & dangerous (misconception) The World is Flat unless you are in a classroom
Let's try for some specific examples relevant to some of our Learning outcomes (if we can)
Love bringing in experts to help Ss understand problem more and use expertise to answer relevant questions
! Scale out from the classroom & get Ss having impact on community! https://t.co/VpHE4uxXt8
connecting Ss learning powered by design to change their families, neighborhoods and community.
A4: digital media editing skills = awareness campaign and activist on social justice like
It is in some places; and in others we've made tremendous headway in showing power of social media 4 good
A4: Generally, Ss learn that they are in fact always presenting their learning about anything and everything. +1 life reflection
I was just joking about your apology to go outside K12. :)
to Mod on for pushing us to get specific & concrete https://t.co/e1CWwgkZmI
Let's try for some specific examples relevant to some of our Learning outcomes (if we can)
yes/and keep those connections going throughout project- not just once. Build relationships to further understanding
ELA nothing if not communication, whether artistic or informative purpose&empathy=ultimate communication https://t.co/ORKc46JGgs
Q4:Think abt the new concept/skill introduced. What are some real life applications of those skills? https://t.co/nour07XSsF
A4 The skills demo’d have “real Life” applications daily (btw I dislike when “real” is used in learning i.e. Real World Learning)
we created a course that Ss can recognize the dark side and Force Within piloting this fall
This reflection might help Ss make deeper connections to the community and carve out a role
I haven't done it -- just a brainstorm tonight on giving it some thought though . . .
is aware of this Dark Side/Force Within course of which you speak?
Sorry , that's all for me tonite. Got a dog to walk, curtains to hang, room to clean & a car to drop at the shop. Be well all!
My thoughts exactly Yo Thomas
Yeah! I generally find anyting that gets my HSers thinking about their own personas & projections is a good thing
Thanks for sharing your voice, ideas, and examples I always love reading your tweets!
A4 real-life application is important, but also finding meaning for Ss is
bc all learning is real world learning? or bc when we design learning well, it is naturally real world learning?
Dude. It's nine thirty. Bam.
Q5:What are some ways students can represent and share their new understanding and get feedback? https://t.co/MNLbeRxOS4
the connection between learning in the classroom and application to the world around is critical
Goodnight - thank you for your generous offer of your students. I look forward to our future scheming. :)
when students make meaning, learning matters to them; they don't need 'real-life' labeling https://t.co/77s7JN938H
A4 real-life application is important, but also finding meaning for Ss is
yes, in addition to giving/finding meaning to Ss
Yes learning is learning why disparage approaches 2 learning bc outcomes dont end N fireworks/new thing-a-ma-gig
OMG. I LOVE this. Jaw agape. Want to hear more! https://t.co/BCNOBMX2vd
we created a course that Ss can recognize the dark side and Force Within piloting this fall
Bring out my and for Q4 it's time to Prototype
A5:school hallways w/extra chalk/pencils/post-its for feedback from passers-by Parents Other age classes Connections near & far.
! and this is why is the gift that keeps on giving to my brain piece! https://t.co/xna16oT2ZE
Yes learning is learning why disparage approaches 2 learning bc outcomes dont end N fireworks/new thing-a-ma-gig
A5 The more we can act on ideas the more feedback we'll glean
A5: You mean besides elevator speeches? ;)
A5: share - , present to stakeholders like Team 1 building an outdoor classroom for local community https://t.co/U9cm833b8R
A5 do NOT expect a one size fits all platform when it comes demonstrating learning Free-choice & Options 4 those who need them
Discovery for our team, too many Ss falling victims, not enough becoming heroes for others
spending time to Make visual/tangible representations of our learning really helps Ss find applications
record tonight? What is the record anyway?
low res and high res both great opportunities to showcase thinking
A5: how about a corner of the cafeterium (gymateria) where Ss can share new insights?
Amen! https://t.co/lDWie4Lgoe
A5 do NOT expect a one size fits all platform when it comes demonstrating learning Free-choice & Options 4 those who need them
Man has never kept score of the for tis not quantity, but rather ferocity that matters most
Gotta bail peeps! Dad time :) (I need to go play pretend--Star Wars!)
A5:When S's do a visual reflection others can leave "love notes", "questions" or observations/ideas/principles/experiments on it
Thanks so much for sharing your time tonight! always good to "see" you
I think you've earned early dismissal tonight - thank you for the wisdom!
Hey homies - are we doing group Twitter Chat next week from ??? Been missing you all!
Where are the "in house" venues to share to the masses? that place where choice is free of typical constraints?
I too have to depart a few minutes early from tonight; Huge extra for such spirit & community!
A5: For my indies' power topic, I encourage them to try something new and public. Try to change something and see what happens.
Hey Peeps I understand Next Weeks Chat will be off the chain Who are the Leads in Austin?
Would luv to hear more about the course. AND you're from my home state WI too!
Would luv to hear more about the course. AND you're from my home state WI too!
I hope you all are - I need to live vicariously somehow!
Ooh! I want to learn more about this...
A6: I think of starting a S-business
oh heck yes! 8 PM ATX time! Live ! Reckon we'll gently & politely gather in a hotel lobby as we do
Teachers need to have trust & let go of control so Ss can bring it & Ss need opportunity (multiple) 2 deliver it
A6 for me it comes down to reflective-life is an iterative process when you take time to pause and collaborate
I want to know about that!
A6 Teachers need 2 realize they R already Design Thinkers constantly designing 4 end Users (Realization will Reframe their doing)
A6: incorporate DT into everyday things Ss care about: good, free time, tech use etc and let it empower a bias for action.
look forward to meeting/seeing some of you at !
A6: I think of farming exp. so many ways to incorporate interdisciplinary learning
we are using DT within our leadership team as we move forward together
I'll send to you and it's a cool template you can hack. Some call it "experience diagramming."
yes! love that you are living the model!
A6 a classroom full of people + empathy is a Design Thinkers Incubator Culture Content, & Learning is shaped, iterated, & cared 4
Yes! And recognizing that things are rarely ever "done" - always try to iterate
We already practice the modes of in our teaching. use DT language and talk to your Ss as Designers
A6: Supporting cycles (and spirit) of iteration in S's writing/science/art/etc. experimentation. https://t.co/thCLrlUyCm
thanks for a lovely chat Chris!!
Love it. Working w/ T's today who reflected about feeling of experimenting *with* s's since starting DT https://t.co/DplBt3AGcE
