Hi everyone! I'm Scott from NJ, former classroom teacher and current Technology Integration Specialist.
My favorite book series by far is Harry Potter! #MakeItReal
Brandi- 1st Grade Teacher from Florida!! I have always loved the message in “The Giving Tree”! Excited to chat with my AMAZING friend @sdtitmas tonight! #MakeItReal
My name is Selena Knight, instructional tech facilitator from Tx, former librarian and avid reader. I can never choose a favorite, but two recent great ones are The Hate You Give and The Woman in the Window. #makeitreal#ReadAcrossAmericaWeek
Good evening! Fav book is tough, since I love soooo many! EDU favs are #tlap and #InnovatorsMindset but for fiction, probably the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings series, and Shannara series. #MakeItReal
Phil from Northern Virginia signing in. Favorite book (series) would have to be the series that helped me fall in love with reading... Harry Potter! #makeitreal
I love Happy Dreamer! I just did a book read where I had a middle school class read it via Google Hangouts to my son's first grade class! #makeitreal#ReadAcrossAmericaWeek
That's a given :) One of the best narrated series I've ever listened to as well. We are headed to Universal and the World of Harry Potter in 2 weeks! #makeitreal#ReadAcrossAmericaWeek
Terry Brooks is the author, and he was influenced by Tolkien. Sword of Shannara is the first of many trilogies in the series. Druids, Dwarves, Men, Elves, oh my! #MakeItReal
#makeitreal Hello All! Nora from NJ. Ah there are so many - I always say the last book I read is my favorite... so for fiction that would be “The Art of Racing in the Rain” 📚
A1: I remember the reading competitions in elementary school...my competitive spirit took over from there. Recently feel like a born again reader. #MakeItReal
A1. I have always just loved reading! As far back as I can remember, I have loved to read. I remember my mom would take me to the library every Saturday. She would read genealogy and I would scan the aisles for hours looking at Clifford books etc.
#MakeItReal
A1: After a bad experience with my reading teacher and "Book It" in 5th grade I hated reading until Ms. Laverty who was my MS reading teacher and encouraged me to try Harry Potter. I still talk to Ms. Laverty and thank her for that moment. #makeitreal
A1: Raised by 2 educators, I have never not known a love of reading. Parents guided me throughout elementary on choices by authors they knew I'd like, then we read same books & discussed over dinner when I was in HS. #MakeItReal
A1) I think my parents did, but not really sure. I don’t remember learning to read, I just remember reading. All the time. Wish I could do it more as an adult. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A1 I despised reading until 6th grade when my teacher chose to break the mold and read The Client by John Grisham with us. I STILL love Grisham and now LOVE to read. #MakeItReal
A1 My mom sparked my love for reading. She would encourage us to read, to buy books and we went 1-2 times a week to the library. Books were always around and we were encouraged to read. That has instilled a pure love of reading for me. #MakeItReal
A1B. My daughter shares my love of learning. She’s been addicted to books since birth! We love to read.
She also shares my love for kitty YouTube videos. #MakeItReal
A1: Mr. Johnson, my 5th grade teacher. Read to us every class but read with such enthusiasm and passion. Always appreciated his readings, but wasn't until later that I got into reading. #makeitreal
A1: My mom was an avid reader. I saw it modeled from her. I also loved getting lost in another world. Plus, in a family of boys, I was never cool enough to play with my brothers.... #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A1 my parents are both avid readers, you would think that would mean we have a stack of books in the house, but my dad is a pass it on type of reader #youmustreadthis#makeitreal
A1: I honestly cannot remember not enjoying reading. My mom always read to me when I was little. My family always had books around. We just read. #makeitreal
A1: I cannot trace my love of reading back to a person or to a moment in time. I just remember wanting to read because I was invested in the characters--in my head they were real. And they still are today when I read! #makeitreal
"Sneaky read" is a concept I'm loving. I always focus on reading a whole chapter, but sometimes you can only read 2-3 pages, so that's okay, too. #MakeItReal
A1 As an ELL I was forced to read out loud before I was ready. Grew to hate reading until I read The Outsiders. Couldn’t put the book down and read everything she wrote. #MakeItReal
A1- I have always loved reading, but our local children’s’ librarian when I saw as a child could make books come alive when she would read aloud. #makeitreal
A1 This year...a new love for picture books with my global collaborations. I now have a new big collection. Can't wait to bring them to my HS class next year. Let's rediscover that love for reading with adolescents! #MakeItReal
A1: Honestly, I remember when I realized I could read and then I just didn’t want to stop. My mom read to me a lot as a child and would read to my class, so I think I just fell in love with reading. #makeitreal
A1: As a young child, my aunt enrolled me in a book club & every month I received a new book in the mail! I attended the library summer reading program & loved getting new books! For many years I lost that ❤️ of reading but DBC Books have helped me rediscover that! #MakeItReal
I have been reading books for as long as I can remember from early childhood. Loved my children's lit class in college and any and every reason to collect as many children's books as I can. #makeitreal#IHMarchMadness
#MakeItReal Amy Janjgava (dyslexia therapist) in Wichita Falls, Texas- fav children book right now is @Clantoons books “Narwhal unicorn of the sea” 😍 Adult PD fav book right now @aaron_hogan#TeacherMyth 🙌🏼
A1 I struggled with reading comprehension until about 4th grade. My mom read with me every night and helped me get lost in the books. Because of her, it all clicked and I have been obsessed with reading ever since. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
1) I always remember seeing my mom & grandmas read. I had teachers who loved reading. I have always loved books! As a kid, books were my favorite gift to open! #makeitreal
A1: My mom sparked my love of reading. She took me to "The Sweet Shop" in town everyday before PM Kindergarten for a little treat and to practice my little first readers. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
2) Connections! I share my favorites with them (Harry Potter & Percy Jackson), race them through series (Series of Unfortunate Events), share meaningful picture/chapter books- READING IS READING (pictures, words, chapters- get books in their hands!). #makeitreal
A2 Don't stick to what "HAS to be" read. I really believe we can teach the same skills with any books that interest students. Last year we read Hatchet, Wonder, and HP & the Sorcerer's Stone. My students CHOSE each class novel. #MakeItReal
A2: By giving them choice.
Also, since reading #InstantRelevance, I want to make everything relatable to my kids and their everyday life! Currently working on amping up a Chemistry reading/assessment by getting the kids to have choice/relevance. #MakeItReal
A1: My mom took me to the library when I was younger and she loved getting children’s books and shoving them on our overstuffed bookshelf. Later, I really began to enjoy reading in 11th grade with The Hunger Games. Found my genre: dystopian. #MakeItReal
A2: I do read aloud every day. Either a chapter book or picture book. I like to read books they can relate to, or books that will spark questions and discussions. #IHMarchMadness#MakeItReal
A2: I pull in resources that Ss are interested in. When we talk about their passions, I try to relate it back to reading. I try to talk about my love of reading and what I'm reading. I want them to know that adults still read and read frequently! #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2: I make lots of connections to books in class. So many authors use historical events as the basis for some of their themes. As we go over those events I like to show Ss this. Also like using things like Hunger Games to teach about Reconstruction districts. #makeitreal
A2 I make reading relevant by having discussions and having it relate to topical themes. Students want to feel emotions, share thoughts, be heard. I try to incorporate all of this in my classroom. Let the kids take the lead and create your connections as a group. #MakeItReal
A2: I encourage my Ss to have a choice in what they read!! I expose them to different genres & authors but love seeing what they gravitate to! Love giving them opportunities to share what they are reading w/ others!! I love reading a book that they’ve suggested! #MakeItReal
A2 I try to pull in reading to all subjects. We read books in science, social studies, sometimes math, etc. It is even more relevant when the books have cool facts, illustrations, and really just draw the kids in. Dramatic reading helps, too!#MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2 Give Ss a choice in what they read. If we keep mandating what Ss read and not allowing them to pick books they are interested in...we will turn them off from reading! #makeitreal
A2: I run a resource classroom so my students are with me such a short amount of time. I have books available "just in case" and when Ss and I talk about our likes and dislikes, I always share about my love of reading. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A1: I never had a true love of reading until I became a teacher. Reading was tough for me when i was younger and that’s hard to share. I went to “Special Reading” as it was called for all of my elem years. Started K at 4 yrs old though. #MakeItReal
A2: By providing an overabundance of material that allows them to read about characters who look, feel and live like they do! Reading so much that I can help students find books that THEY will love. Nobody hates to read...they just haven't found the right book yet! #makeitreal
A2) I talk about reading as much as I can. I make out read aloud a engaging. They are often on the wrong page because they are listening. I also try to find books they would enjoy. Gives me a reason to read new books! #makeitreal#IHMarchMadness
A2: Finding opinion questions within the readings and have Ss get into debates on who's right. Tell them no right or wrong answer, just strong or weak arguments. That leads to them getting interested more in reading. #makeitreal
A2: I like to tie my read-alouds into past experiences/knowledge, and grow their knowledge from what they already know. Sometimes, I may need to give Ss some pre-knowledge before reading, and that's okay, too! #MakeItReal
A2: I take time to get to know my students and their interests and find books accordingly. I also choose books they can relate to and that I know will encourage great discussion. #makeitreal
A1: Several ways: 1) Design activities that bring in real life or S interests to help connect them to the stories 2) Radio class is creating audiobooks for library & ES/MS Ts to use with Ss. Here's the padlet link to our selection so far: https://t.co/j2X0VOyVaC#MakeItReal
A2 I check out the same books my Ss check out so I can talk to them about the books they are reading and then help them relate it to their lives. By doing this, I can also help Ss find other books I know they will enjoy. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2: Reading aloud with different voices and involving the children in repeated phrases, creates a passion and love of reading. #IHMarchMadness#MakeItReal
A3: It’s all about those text connections! We talk about how what we read relates to ourselves, other books we have read, or relates to the world. This makes reading more meaningful to students. #MakeITReal
#makeitreal Follow their interests!! My class last year loved the minecraft books. The class before that loved ninjago... I also model my reading, I just finished #readyplayerone in anticipation of the movie!
A2: I love what @heatherrocco showed me. Just carry a book around with you all the time. Kids will ask, "what are you reading" and you can ask the same. Instant...Relevance! #MakeItReal
A2 I want to make it a habit of having students practice making connections: text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world. For them to find something within the story they can connect somewhere else. ALSO, discussions foster and create relevant conversations #makeitreal
I love reading, but if you force me to read something I am not interested in, I die a little inside. Forcing kids to read what we want them to read is counterproductive! #makeitreal
A2: I try to take our weekly stories and create some sort of project with them to make the work more relevant. For example, after reading Officer Buckle and Gloria we made safety posters for our own school, and talked about the importance of rules.
#MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2: I read to them in various forms. I struggle with tough words, use voices and intonation, even read like a robot to model good then great reading. #MakeItReal
When I took over the HS Novels class for my current dist., the Ss developed criteria and selected their own novels. We then either got them from libraries or bought them ourselves until my P was impressed & had me order class set of them all! #MakeItReal Stephen King made list!
Meet @iammarleydias: She's a 12-year-old on a mission to make sure young black girls are represented in the books they read — and she's inspiring everyone along the way! 📚 👑
A2: I try to make read aloud time the best part of the day. I use different accents and voices for different characters. I also like reading the first book in a series with my kids, so if they get hooked there are plenty of books for them to continue! #IHMarchMadness#makeitreal
It is SO important to build trust. If I am not willing to try a book that a kid suggests, why would they read anything I suggest? I frequently ask kids for book suggestions and I will book talk with anyone wiling to listen. #makeitreal
A3 We have to tap into a child's interests! When we want a child to try new foods, we don't force it! Give Ss time to make the right choice. #makeitreal
A3 Read together with them. Find some fun ways to extend their learning beyond their learning. Invite other adults to come read with kids. Go and read with kids out in the community with them outside school hours. Help them find the books that make them "feel". Enjoy! #MakeItReal
3) The older character ("Bob" as my Ss renamed him this week- ha!) doesn't even want to try green eggs- until Sam talks him into it. Don't give up- help that S find their book! Every kiddo has a favorite book, but not all of them have found them yet. #makeitreal
A2: Reading teaches us to be human. We build connections with characters and stories by integrating our worlds to uncover new perspectives about ourselves and others. Books are a thread that tie us together through lessons! #MakeItReal
A3 Be a positive role model and support the S with their interests. Provide a variety of books to choose from with opportunities. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A3 Find books that appeal to their interests. My first graders had library today and when I picked them up caught a couple of boys beaming over finding some books about the KC Chiefs, it's all out there! #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A3: Ss need to know that reading isn't just a chapter book. It's a graphic novel, a comic book, a gamer book, etc. I also encourage Ss to share good reads. #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2 Picking stories w/relevant themes for the culture of our school. Started off the year by reading Stargirl aloud as a class. Although narrated by a high schooler, the Ss related to the characters within bc they know how the culture of school works/should work #makeitreal
A3 I share my journey with reading and let them know how much I missed by not reading. They usually start suggesting books. Some of the best books I’ve read were recommended by Ss. #MakeItReal
A3: I push so much reading (and re-reading) for enjoyment rather than a prize or reward. We check out 4 library books: 2 on grade level and 2 free choice. #MakeItReal
A3: #makeitreal ! Expose students to all types of genres and support them as they find their own interests as readers. That also means having a rich, diverse classroom library to appeal to all students. Make reading a special time...and fun! I could go on....it's my passion
A2 I try to help the Ss relate to what they are reading. Also, showing the importance of reading by finding books that highlight their passion. Making those connections is key. #MakeItReal#ihmarchmadness
A3: You have to keep encouraging them until they find something they love!! Setting up a Book Tasting would be a perfect activity to introduce Ss to a variety of books! #MakeItReal
A3) just get them to try it!! Find their interest, watch the movie when they are done, read comics, the sports section, recipies, anything!! #makeitreal#IHMarchmadness
A3: I agree with @MarciGudenkauf DONT go crazy pushing AR. Show kids how reading is a reward. Find what they love and let them control the pace. Help them make it theirs. #ihmarchmadness#makeitreal
A3: It depends on the kid and what motivates them. I had a kid read like crazy today so that he could get on his favorite math site this afternoon, but that wouldn't work for everyone in my room.
#MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A2 Model how much I love reading, share my passion for all different kinds of books and make it exciting. Continue to expose them to different authors and types of text until the magic happens. #ihmarchmadness#MakeItReal
A3: Show them how stories are everywhere. Bring in video clips, opinion questions, use #BookSnaps and get to know them and their interests to help guide them to books they'd like. #MakeItReal
A3: Frequent opportunities to read
Free choice of what they read
Freedom to abandon a book
No judgement on their choices
Books in a variety of formats
Exposure to LOTS of options
24/7 Availability and access to books
#makeitreal
#makeitreal thank you for the insights! I hope you'll join me tomorrow in #waledchat at 9pm EST when we reflect on the past month of influence we have had!
A3: Persistence. Sam was given many options and choices for his green eggs and ham and finally gave them a true shot! We need to expose kids to many types of books and encourage reading for enjoyment. #MakeItReal
A3: I teach in a therapeutic learning program within the school district and the majority of my students struggle with reading. There are days it is a real struggle to get them to read, but I model for them and show them reading can be fun. We have a blast! #makeitreal
A2 I read aloud to my students every single day and I like to read student picked award winning books such as William Allen White Award winning books.
#MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A3
1. Determine interests
2. Figure out reading level
3. Check in with them often
Many of my Ss did not find a book they enjoyed reading bc they had been picking books OUT of their level. We examined individual Lexile scores, and so many Ss are finishing books!! #makeitreal
A3 Allow them to read for fun... gasp... We spend too much time keeping them accountable for every bit of reading they do at school. Let them choose their own genres and get lost in text whatever it may be #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
Thanks everyone! Great chat, @sdtitmas If anyone wants to do a GHO for Read Across America, let me know. I might have a 6th grade teacher or two interested. #makeitreal
I was highly impressed with their criteria! They even allowed for all genres suggested by the class, albeit there were only 12 Ss. They chose:
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, Everlost,The Forest of Hands & Teeth, & 13 Reasons Why #MakeItReal
A3 I try to find something they're interested in, be it novels, graphic novels, comic books, magazines. Reading is reading....
#MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
A1: My love for reading was sparked by my brother. I always wanted to be just like him. I was reading books in preschool to try and keep up when he was in first grade. #IHMarchMadness#MakeItReal
A3: Get to know your students likes and dislikes. If you have a reluctant reader, who loves Pokémon, find him/her ALL the Pokémon books. Start reading a page or two, and hopefully... they get hooked! #MakeITReal
A2: Ss have to be interested in the topic to want to discover more! Choosing topics and having Ss self navigate. Giving options and free range of the library helps too! #IHMarchMadness#MakeItReal
A3: Read aloud helps. Especially with former ESL students, adding animation and voices help to make the story come alive. I would always read aloud different genres to spark interest and then help lead in the right direction! #IHMarchMadness#MakeItReal
A3 Allow them to read for fun... gasp... We spend too much time keeping them accountable for every bit of reading they do at school. Let them choose their own genres and get lost in text whatever it may be #MakeItReal#IHMarchMadness
Yes! Uninterrupted time to read is so valuable. We need a sign that says "leave me alone, I'm reading". When we keep stopping students to make them answer questions we break the momentum and the mood. Trust them to read and understand it. #makeitreal
It was awesome. They incorporated sound, music, art, movement, and story elements! The 1st graders loved it and created their own dreamer projects. #makeitreal
I’ve always loved reading but I don’t think anyone in particular sparked my love of it. The best part of reading is the escape into another world ( Can you tell I love fiction??) I read every night!! #MakeItReal
