I love SweetTart Hearts!

A1: I live in the attendance zone for the school I teach in. This was a choice that I have rarely regretted. Both my kids will soon enter my high school. I love being able to see my students, past, present and future outside of school. #sdedchat
A1: I try to get involved in different activities. I attend sports events and concerts, visit the county fair, eat at restaurants in the area. For my colleagues, I try to be a support system that others can trust and rely on. #sdedchat
A1: attending different events! In person like curriculum night or even just showin the love for district 122 via twitter on edchats #122edchat#sdedchat
A1: I love standing in the hallway. It is an assigned duty location, but I have fun laughing, high-fiving, singing, dancing, making kids feel welcome every day. #sdedchat
A1: I show love to our school community through continually reaching out, informing, collaborating, providing resources, and sometimes just listening intently/thoughtfully.
#sdedchat
A1 Be happy to be there everyday, even if you have to fake it until the coffee kicks in. Ss don't need to know you are having a bad day! They have their own stuff to deal with, so they need you to be "on" everyday. #sdedchat
A1: I am working at being present for more community events, I smile and greet people in the halls, greet my Ss at the door, provide training to others & help whenever asked #sdedchat
A1: I do my best to attend sporting events, and cheer on the home team! I participate in student vs. faculty events and try to be a part of many school functions. #sdedchat
A1: I am working at being present for more community events, I smile and greet people in the halls, greet my Ss at the door, provide training to others & help whenever asked #sdedchat
A1: I try to attend events whenever possible (games, plays, etc) and I try to always participate in Spirit Days. Admittedly, I used to be much better at this in the beginning of my career, but I still try to get involved in activities occurring outside the classroom. #sdedchat
I've started attending more sporting events (I'm not really a 'sports' person) and I am so amazed at how talented kids are & the look of dedication on their faces!! #sdedchat
A1: I coach, attend concerts and theater performances, and other community events. I take MSs skiing on Fridays we don't have PD! Best Fridays ever. #sdedchat
Hello everyone! Glad to have you here! Let's start with introductions. . . What's your name, where are your from, your role in education, and your favorite Valentine treat? #sdedchat
It’s one way of many. With a young family it is hard for me to be at all the things. I show I care by investing in them, learning about who they are and what they care about, and trusting them even if they may not deserve it. #sdedchat
I love thanking the kids on the way out of the building, too, for coming to school and for giving their best effort. Great way to send them off with a smile and the feeling of being loved. #sdedchat
A2: I like to email home positive things I notice in class. Parents should not assume school only contacts home when times are rough, they should be able to know about great things their kids are doing! #sdedchat
A1: Attending extra curricular events! I love seeing their other passions. Smiling and reaching out to help other staff and students. Recognizing when someone needs help and offering any assistance. #sdedchat
A2: I like to email home positive things I notice in class. Parents should not assume school only contacts home when times are rough, they should be able to know about great things their kids are doing! #sdedchat
A2: In many cases, celebrating students kindness is as easy as noticing it! So often the little things don't get noticed. Let the students know how great you think they are!
#sdedchat
A2: Brag about it, constantly. Talk about it until the turn red. They need to hear the positive impact that they are having on others and my own heart. As a dad, I love it when they are kind to each other. #sdedchat
A2: being in the HS library, I actually see this quite often! I always compliment the students and bring attention to what they did and why I’m giving them props! You’d be surprised what simply acknowledging the act of kindness does for these kids! #sdedchat#punkrocklibrarian
A2: By giving them something sweet! And praising their actions. Our school also has a “Be the change” raffle where students earn tickets for their positive actions and words. At the end of the week they are put into a raffle to win a gift card! #sdedchat
A2: I draw either draw attention to the situation and use it as an example..or tell parents about it. But I love complimenting those that are kind #sdedchat

A2: At the beginning of the year I would send 1 e-mail home per 6 class periods of a great thing I noticed w/ a student. I have fallen out of routine, but kids would come to school & share. Tweeting about kids- community sees! #sdedchat

A2: I usually made a really big deal out of it and tell them how much it means to me. We also give out gotchas in school to those Ss we catch doing good things :) #sdedchat
A1 I volunteer for a attend events for various school community groups. Baseball, charity runs, SABF, are a few, but I also try to attend a wide range of co-/extra-curriculars (e.g. 4H, district choir) #sdedchat
A2: Praise goes a long way! Positive feedback, a nice postcard/email home! OR send the parent and the student a recording via email using @Screencastify! Personal little touch to show the love. #sdedchat
Being present is huge. I think it’s also the little things. Smiles, saying hello to everyone, picking up the stray trash as you walk by in the hall. So many ways to show your school you care #sdedchat
y'all... @MrPStrunk & his tweeps brought the love to #sdedchat tonight. I can't keep up with the amazingness being shared- WOW! <3 thanks for being here
Sometimes students are shy about being publicly recognized and when that’s true I will pull them aside and tell them I noticed their kindness and how much it means to me and our class’ success #sdedchat

A2: Making sure to focus on the positives and remarking on the effect it has on others. Emailing home with positive changes instead of just negative behaviors. #sdedchat
A2: We do lessons on bucket filling and always acknowledge Ss we catch filling other people's buckets! We use "whale tickets" our mascot is an Orca to encourage kindness throughout our school. I also make positive phone calls home. #sdedchat
Thanks for joining #sdedchat tonight Shelly. I agree with you completely, we are all a part of our community and they love to hear how things are going!
I think it's important to recognize which students can handle public praise and which ones cannot. It can ruin a relationship to draw attention to those that don't like it. #sdedchat
Sometimes students are shy about being publicly recognized and when that’s true I will pull them aside and tell them I noticed their kindness and how much it means to me and our class’ success #sdedchat
A2 We celebrate students who are kind to each other by giving them specific praise for those behaviors. We also often reward them with opportunities to lead and to onboard new students. #sdedchat
@misskoplin and I have a similar program at our school! Students can get gift cards and now whatever grade gets the most names submitted, every kid that had a name submitted kids a free pizza coupon from a local place! #sdedchat
A2: I celebrate students who are sweet and kind to each other by giving specific compliments about their actions and attitudes. I like to let them know that I notice their attitudes and actions. I believe those are two things that define a person. #sdedchat

A2: As a building, we do Random Acts of Kindness. Their is a weekly drawing and the students can win a $5 gift card to B&N. In my room, I make an effort to e-mail parents positive observations on a monthly basis. I also give out reward tickets for chivalrous behavior. #sdedchat

Absolutely! Too often, the community only hears about the problems. Our schools are doing so many wonderful things and we need to let people see that :) #sdedchat
A3: I think that this is the toughest thing for me to do. I am constantly reflecting on what went well and what can be improved. I always want to get better and learn. #sdedchat
A3: It's tough. I am constantly watching the clock, hoping for two extra minutes here and there. I am thankful for the others in my life that are tweeting out wins that are happening while I work. #sdedchat
A3: My wife and I go on dates on rougher days, Netflix is always a great source of self-care, and sitting down to reflect with friends like @ToddRisser and @misskoplin never hurts either! #sdedchat
A3: Oh...thank goodness for Meditation! Even in the midst of a class. When you can take a moment to breathe in the appreciation of what we get to do...daily... #sdedchat
So hard, sometimes! I started "Tell me something good Monday" in Nov when the days started getting shorter. I share something good that happened in the prev week, and then the students do. #focusonthepositive#sdedchat
It’s an unrealistic expectation to be st all the things. It’s great when you can go, but setting the expectations at “I’ll go to everything” is beyond reasonable. #sdedchat
So hard, sometimes! I started "Tell me something good Monday" in Nov when the days started getting shorter. I share something good that happened in the prev week, and then the students do. #focusonthepositive#sdedchat
A3: Sitting back to "smell the roses" during the school year happens for me through disconnecting from school/tech and reconnecting with family, friends, and the outdoors.
#sdedchat
A3: I think that this is the toughest thing for me to do. I am constantly reflecting on what went well and what can be improved. I always want to get better and learn. #sdedchat
A3: I find myself struggling to master this. What helps is focusing on kids and they bring out the bright side of things. My staff is student driven. #sdedchat
A3: I try to be in the moment with my learners, not thinking about my e-mail or stressful meetings. I laugh loud with them, I kneel down to chat with them and make eye contact, I smile, and I celebrate Ss & what they're excited about #sdedchat

A3: I take five minutes at the end of everyday (before I leave work) to reflect on at least 5 positive things that happened. I also take lots of pictures of the kids and look back at them to see how far they have come. #sdedchat#leaveworkhappy
A3: It’s so hard for me to just stop trying to accomplish EVERYTHING. I try to hide my phone and just hang with my husband and kiddo. Just reading a book with my son or taking him on a bike ride helps me stop and enjoy what’s going on around me. ❤️ #sdedchat
A3 Be sure to take a few minutes to hear celebrations from your team at any meeting. Another way I have found to smell the roses is to make sure that I have time to socialize with my trusted colleagues and mentors outside of work. #sdedchat
It took me a few years to realize that self-care was necessary to make me a better teacher. I thought if I stopped being busy I wasn't working hard enough & felt so guilty. #sdedchat
A3: I’ll reflect on my day or take a step back and observe. Just taking in how thankful I am to be doing what I love, and being able to make a difference. #sdedchat
A3 I stopped bringing work home on weeknights. If I don't get it done, it will keep until tomorrow. Working all the time does no one any favors, and just burns you out quicker. #sdedchat
A3: I’ll reflect on my day or take a step back and observe. Just taking in how thankful I am to be doing what I love, and being able to make a difference. #sdedchat
I love this! @lyondon2 started our staff meeting this morning with sharing celebrations, it was so fun and heartwarming to share in others' joy #sdedchat
Work doesn't get chaotic as much as it use to for me, ever since I started focusing on myself and changing the things I can control. Now, I can sit in the moment. I am taking better care of myself and others especially my students. :) #sdedchat
A3.2: we start every team meeting with positives happening in our classroom. It gives us time to celebrate the success with our peers too. Also taking time during the day to breathe and refocus. My Ss have learned to meditate and enjoy it too. #sdedchat
@benandjerrys Tonight Dough/Phish Food. Reflect on how my Ss and self have changed throughout the year. Figure out how we can go outside for class! and can I bring my dog? #sdedchat
A4: I talked to a student today about her test grade. I asked her if she would like to study with me for the next test. I told her that I had noticed how hard she was working and wanted her to see some reward for it. #sdedchat
A4: Lots of student conversation and a willingness to not give up on students. They need a champion to show them that they can be great, so I try to be that for them! #sdedchat
A4: Find the wins, no matter how small, and celebrate them, vigorously. Constantly remind them that they are great and have much to contribute. #sdedchat
A4: Helping students shine for me is through building relationships and trust. Through these you can allow more risk-taking and student choice in what they produce and share with the world.
#sdedchat
A4: Conferencing with Ss and discussing what they feel are failures and successes. Pointing out even the smallest successes. Letting them know that you understand them and are there to help. #sdedchat
A4: I talk with my students about what they have control over. We can't control our past, life events, living arrangements, etc. but we can control our attitude and reaction to things. Every day is a new day & every person is capable of learning & being kind #sdedchat
A4: Helping students shine for me is through building relationships and trust. Through these you can allow more risk-taking and student choice in what they produce and share with the world.
#sdedchat
A4: By telling them and showing them that we believe in them. In my kindergarten class, we talk about how everyone has "hiccups" now and then but we all have the power to take a deep breath and turn our day around. Always putting student relationships first. #sdedchat
A4 through hearing them out, being honest with them, and helping them with a plan to move forward. Also, supporting them by checking on their progress. When they succeed, celebrate the heck out of it, no matter the size of the success #sdedchat
A4: Notice them for who they are and listen to them. I get the privilege of checking id's at MS lunch. I try to check body language and let them pick on me about the Nebraska Cornhuskers. 🌽 #sdedchat
A4 The path to success is neither straight nor easy, so focusing on moving forward and making progress no matter how small is important. Most importantly, make sure they know that their success matters to you! #sdedchat
A4b: I am also really honest w/ students, I share about my life with them as a kid. I tell Ss I am fighting for them, always. I tell them I care and that I believe in them. I never hold a grudge for a student. #sdedchat
A4: I help them understand that it is ok to make mistakes, and not every day with be a great day. But we can always be better and our mistakes don’t define us. #sdedchat
A4b: I am also really honest w/ students, I share about my life with them as a kid. I tell Ss I am fighting for them, always. I tell them I care and that I believe in them. I never hold a grudge for a student. #sdedchat
A5: We discuss at the beginning of the year groundrules and my non-negotiables for how we treat each other. I frequently revisit this when I see that things are out of synch or are going well. #sdedchat
A5: I greet students in the hallway, I make jokes, but I also have procedures that I adhere to and students know that I will enforce them. I want my students to be able to come in my room and know that they will receive a good education and risk taking is A-Okay! #sdedchat
I help Ss overcome obstacles & shine bright like diamonds by listening, & empathizing w them. I used to think I could "fix" them, but the only 1 I can fix is me. They shine naturally when they know they are worth being heard. #sdedchat
We talk a lot about choice and I try to leave some assignments open ended so students can take them in a direction they are passionate about! Having a culture where making mistakes is ok, as long as you learn from them. #sdedchat
A5: I'm not a hugger so I high five my students at the door every day. I am working at getting better at learning & using names. We laugh together. Learning is our focus so we support each other. #sdedchat
A5: Class environment is aided greatly through active cultivation of relationships not just between Ts and Ss but between Ss and Ss. Celebrate kindness and success. Learn from failure together.
#sdedchat
A5: Greeting them with a smile daily. Having private chats when problems do arise to teach them how to correctly handle situations with themselves and their peers. Reminding them that they can come to me about whatever they need. #sdedchat
A5: I treat my students the same way that I treat my own kids. I love them like they are a part of my own family. I seek to connect them to their potential value and long range destination. Always casting vision. #sdedchat
A5: I do my best to connect with the students, and allow them to share their ideas in a non judgmental zone. I’ll give them high-fives and provide lots of smiles! #sdedchat
A5: Address what they need as individuals. It is a work in progress for everyone to adjust to different standards but for some it is the secret formula for success. #sdedchat
A4b: I help them shine bright by celebrating every small success they have. Reminding them everyday that they are amazing! I teach them positive self-talk...I am smart, I am beautiful, I can make good choices. #sdedchat
A5 Greet students with a smile or a "good morning" (or both), don't take yourself too seriously, but est. and reinforce authority through consistent expectations and follow through. #sdedchat
A5 And make you classroom a place they want to be. I work hard to make my classroom warm and inviting, bc it is our home. Ss make fun of my inspirational quote posters ,but they remember them #sdedchat
A5: I play music every morning as Ss come in and greet them at the door. I give a moment to become present and try to ease into the class. I point out every mistake I make so they will be comfortable doing the same. I narrate my reading/writing struggles when I model. #sdedchat

A5: By building student relationships first. Developing a sense of trust. Student relationships come before learning and learning happens because of relationships. Being there for them on their good days and especially on their difficult days. Never giving up on them! #sdedchat
DITTO! I have been trying to do a weekly Throwback Thursday song as well, but I fell off the wagon and usually end up just throwing on Study Beats. #sdedchat
Q6: When things are going well for you it is always nice to “share the love.” How do you collaborate and share the love with your colleagues? #sdedchat
A4: I try my best to 👂the Ss as they talk about themselves, interests, etc.; 2 find 📚 , events, info that they can connect w/ ~ which in turn builds relationships with the Ss! Some Ss start HS off in the rough but end up as a 💎! #sdedchat#punkrocklibrarian
I create a safe environment for all my Ss by first & foremost practicing self-care. I need to be loving to myself before I can be to anyone else especially my Ss. 1. Painted colorful walls 2. Blurt Out Rules 3. Digital learning 4. Organized 5. And more! #sdedchat
A6: Team meetings and even talking with other teachers before and after school. These conversations are vital for us today, because if we are all in this together, we should all be engaging each other in positive conversations! #sdedchat
Q6: When things are going well for you it is always nice to “share the love.” How do you collaborate and share the love with your colleagues? #sdedchat

Q6: When things are going well for you it is always nice to “share the love.” How do you collaborate and share the love with your colleagues? #sdedchat
A6: This year I am a little more tied down to my space, so I have to be creative on how I connect with others. Sadly, I miss face to face encouragement, so I have to rely on tweeting at people or texts. #sdedchat
Q6: When things are going well for you it is always nice to “share the love.” How do you collaborate and share the love with your colleagues? #sdedchat
A6: Sharing successes and advice in team meetings and staff meetings. Twitter chats to globally share great things! Noticing things happening in other areas of school. #sdedchat
A6: I make it a point to always share with colleagues and reach out to plan, grab resources, or even co-teach. Just as important, I always seek opportunities to listen and learn from colleagues.
#sdedchat
Twitter is my go to place for collaboration. Such a brilliant, funny, generous community - love them so much and learning all the time! #aplitchat#aplangchat#engchat#sdedchat

A:6 Small one: Post-it notes. I stick them on teacher's desks when they are out if the classroom. Cheering them on or commiserating or a little doodle… depending on what they need!
A5: learning and using their names in greeting, making a point to recall something specific about them when having a conversation, being approachable, making myself available, listening and being aware of what’s going on in the library/school. #sdedchat#punkrocklibrarian

A6: I like to share the love on Twitter using our school hashtag. We also have a breakfast book club and share lots of good teaching and student moments, as we discuss Kids Deserve It! @awelcome#sdedchat
I share the love or positive things I am doing with my Ss on Twitter mostly. If anyone reaches out to me, I share as well. Twitter #PLN 's are fun! #sdedchat
Q6: When things are going well for you it is always nice to “share the love.” How do you collaborate and share the love with your colleagues? #sdedchat
A6: I always take time to talk and laugh with them. As head of our school Sunshine Committee, I try to spread cheer and light throughout the school. #sdedchat
Oh one more thing #sdedchat! This Thursday at 9pm ET I will be hosting #waledchat! We will be talking about caring and education! I hope you will reflect with us!
