Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about resources for GT kids! #gtchat
A1) For younger students, I like books that include a book for parents and a companion book for kids. This affords parents the opportunity for greater interaction with their child on a particular subject. #gtchat
A1) GT kids usually love nonfiction books about subjects that interest them and fiction which is mentally challenging or has characters they can relate to themselves #gtchat
Open sites that let the students explore mathematics as it leads them.
Desmos (and its activities), Geogebra, Wolfram Alpha, and...yes...Wikipedia.
#gtchat
A2) Gifted Homeschoolers Forum @GiftedHF has a lot of gifted and 2E kid specific info. Sites such as @MensaforKids for Kids, @IanAByrd , & @HoagiesGifted have resources for kids. For additional resources, be sure to check out our weekly blog post. #gtchat#2ekids
The Gifted Kids Workbook: Mindfulness Skills to Help Children Reduce Stress, Balance Emotions, and Build Confidence (bn) https://t.co/KyhwUsD61X#gtchat
Our website Cybrary Man's Educational Web Sites has links for all subject areas and grade levels https://t.co/z1frMwV0rf My awesome and passionate global PLN supplies great links for all educational areas #gtchat
A3) I prefer classroom resources which are uniquely suited for GT kids. They can be used in a standalone class or used in conjunction with a differentiated curriculum. #gtchat
We are already half way through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about resources for GT kids! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
#gtchat A3) Nathan Levy's Stories With Holes is a wonderful resource to use whole group which helps with critical thinking, listening skills etc. I use them when we have a few remaining minutes in class.
A3: I believe in allowing tech so serve as communication and collaboration, so google is a go-to. I also love Google Maps for virtual field trips, academic resources like Kahn, Sky and Telescrope, news, and google scholar. AR programs like #aurasma, @scratch#gtchat
#gtchat A3) Nathan Levy's Stories With Holes is a wonderful resource to use whole group which helps with critical thinking, listening skills etc. I use them when we have a few remaining minutes in class.
A4 - Anything that engages them authentically and teaches them about commitment, hard work (so much comes easy) - solar car challenge; drum corps; master chef junior, fencing, chess, etc. #gtchat
A4) We did the MaPP Challenge last year at @LamarUniversity with @lizzibet and Dr. Freddie Titus and a bunch of middle school kids. It was awesome. They have a high school challenge, too! https://t.co/ydy04YmBTO
A5) Online classes may be used to complete specific required coursework and should be taught by certified teachers. However, many GT kids like to take classes for fun where a certified teacher is not needed. #gtchat
Unfortunately, some gt kids take online classes to rush through "easy" courses and miss some foundational material, which can end up hurting them later on. #gtchat
A6) When planning for college, GT students may have unique challenges regarding situations involving acceleration, early (early) entrance, college credits earned in high school, and financing their education. #gtchat
A6) College may not be the first option for all GT students; many may opt for a gap year or may not need college to utilize their talents. Career planning is important at this point. #gtchat
Here on campus, we have an annual #exploreUT for K12 here on campus every March. Students can chat with college students, admissions, as well as explore different colleges and engage in activities https://t.co/NCLX2Kjfkv#gtchat
Enrichment seems to dominate the focus in the early grades, while acceleration seems to dominate MS and certainly HS. Working to shift this in MS and HS would be difficult, but worth it. #gtchat
#gtchat A6) I also think interning or using mentors to let students get to see what jobs and work would actually be like. Many times their interests are very broad and they are interested and quite good at many things making life decisions for their future overwhelming.
