A1: School leadership & culture are intertwined. Student & Teacher leadership = empowerment & innovation building great culture
A1 School leaders set the tone, create the key flavor of the school & invite all other members to contribute in a complementary way
Good morning, hope all is well
A1 It’s a shame to me that so many “leaders” think they need to set the tone for a school. Says something about the previous tone.
Good morning to you all; good afternoon to me, curriculum director here in hot Doha. Looking forward to it
A1 The school leaders are the story keepers of a community. They are the custodians and the missionaries of the culture
A1: Like it says in Remember the Titans "attitude reflects leadership". The culture and attitude of a building rests on it leaders
A1 School culture is guided by it's leaders. I'm lucky to have an incredibly supportive culture in my building b/c the admin is
Leaders should develop a culture of tchrs that value pro dev & strive to improve instruction promote a positive future for all

A1: School leaders are the foundation & pillars for school culture. They must embrace the values & model them. They set the tone.
A1: Leaders set the tone by modeling the expectations.
In the middle of my daughter’s graduation weekend but stopping in on hosted by my peeps
A1A school's culture should reflect the vision the we are all working towards. When it doesn't, school leaders need to re-group
A1: culture and leadership are shared responsibilities by all in a school environment. Everyone has a role in setting the tone.
A1: It's the job of the principal to encourage growth within a culture - to say YES when people want to try something innovative.
A1 . Intrinsically. Tired of those that underestimate culture. Many think leaders need only be bosses. Go. Do. Jump.
Good point--others can always undermine good intentions
A1. school leader sets tone for building climate & culture. Programs, procedures, team decisions, etc. ride heavily on principal
Culture in schools is built on relationships. Want a positive culture? You need healthy relationships rooted in trust & respect!
A1: Like Marlin Perkins (the leader) wrassling with 20' anaconda in knee-deep swamp. Wills need to mesh for success, but takes time
I agree that school leadership shouldn't be about championing heroism of a few, but empowering many.
A1 I don't necessarily think school leaders set the tone-but should facilitate & make sure vision is at forefront
A1 they are interconnected. Sort of like the yin and the yang. When one is out of balance the other suffers
A1: School leadership and culture are the foundation of . Completely free for school leaders. https://t.co/DK45jJqZzZ .

That is a great point, having the capacity to move others towards the vision. https://t.co/V8Npxny1ix
A1: school leaders build the capacity of others to move closer to a compelling vision by creating conditions where all lead
Definitely….the leader has to empower leadership in Ts & Ss to build a strong school culture and collective vision.
Gm ! Jumping in for a few minutes today! Hope everyone is going well!
Leaders are lead learners. https://t.co/u9deG25hCq
A1: School leadership can set the tone for school culture...hopefully a culture of learning...learning by doing.
...and it extends from true leadership actions - not just a title.
A1 Groups are going to find a leader It may not be the principal
A1. School leadership and culture built on foundation of a shared vision.
Leadership sets the tone ... Models the behavior
A1. I loved the quote about risk taking & leadership. Leaders need to model risk-taking & support it when it happens.
A1: leaders need to lead to succeed. Not scare to failure. So lucky to work in a school where there is so much support and comfort!
a1. "We must make it our mission to step down from our throne and coronate others."
A blood the throne and build a round table.
A1 What's the expression? The leader sneezes and the whole school catches a cold https://t.co/xlxz1aY8e0
A1: Totally connected. Leaders help set the environment where culture is established...both good and bad.
Yes, but without leaders to model and support it's a huge undertaking. https://t.co/dCYXudHpMh
Is it only the responsibility of the administrator? Shouldn’t it be the role of all at the school students -> admin?
this is a perfect description.
A1: Presence of strong, confident, & empathetic leaders = increase in positive school culture-->constant transference
A1: The leadership of everyone in a school who is willing to lead defines and develops the culture. Ss, Ts, admin, support staff...
A1.2 I'd also urge us to shift our thinking from school leadership as one person (principal) to all staff - everyone's a leader
A1: the language, symbols, rites & ceremonies create and cultivate culture - lead with these to grow or change
everything is fantastic!!!
The importance of hiring the right people to reflect the desired culture cannot be understated. https://t.co/YoMgMZ0R8B
A1:school leaders absolutely define the culture of a school. They bring their beliefs and look to hire others with the same beliefs
hey Jon!!! Whats up?? So glad you are here with us this morning for
A1 Yes, and doing for others--our school leader has done that so well.
A1 Leaders also need to be deeply connected to the culture of s school because that culture can be lost 1 compromise at a time
A1: Leaders need to support those who shift from the status quo. stagnant schools have no culture
A1) School leaders guide and support the team to create school culture. All must work towards the goal of positive culture.
A1 once shared vision created leader must be cultivated and nurtured to become reality. ALL constituents need to live it everyday
A1 School admin are powerful influencers. Influence can tip culture positive or negative
Good morning ! Josh lead learner from NJ. A little late but excited to join in for this topic.
A1: As in business, essentially there's a trickle-down effect. Leaders have a crucial task to model the ideal vision of the school.
A1: To extend our actions & words align = culture. W clearly articulated vision b4 management, leaders set conditions for culture
I think it's the job of all to encourage growth.
A1: the greater the population of leaders without titles, the stronger the school culture
Who are the "leaders" in today's schools? It's a different environment and the culture should reflect that.
A1: just like w/ the relationships we form w/students as paramount, the must be the same for staff relationships. Build that trust.
A1 Leaders share their vision for S centered, learning focused culture & opens the door for everyone to play a part in building it
A1:School culture is the contagious mood/vibe passed on from the top. Hopefully it's all positive.
Canberra! Not our most rock n roll city. :)
Agreed. By what they model, how they treat others, and by behaviors they accept.
A1: The leader facilitates the culture. When a leader is arrogant, dishonest, & hateful, he leads a school w/bullies, fear & misery.
Please follow my friend & colleague - new to ant Twitter! :) https://t.co/qZG2fijpUh
Good morning. Joe from Western NC, 1st time on .
I agree with you on listening closely, but admin don’t always need to lead, they need to empower others to lead
A1 This is such a critical point no matter where you lead from and to.
A1 - Leaders can have an immediate impact on climate and overtime w/ consistency, shape culture
A1: Leadership is part of the culture but leadership is not exclusive of those with the title. Informal leaders have impact too
Who model risk taking and reflective practice https://t.co/ZyycFNUNO2
Leaders are lead learners. https://t.co/u9deG25hCq
A1: School leadership can set the tone for school culture...hopefully a culture of learning...learning by doing.
Canberra is a wonderful place to live
A shared vision can be the start of a great school!
interesting thinking I agree. So many especially new leaders I have seen think they must change things when they don't
BOOM!!! Couldn't agree more. That's how we build strong cultures. https://t.co/lBuSfEsOWM
A1.2 I'd also urge us to shift our thinking from school leadership as one person (principal) to all staff - everyone's a leader
A1:leaders and teachers need to set a comfortable and secure learning environment. People won't take risks and grow without comfort
Todd is brilliant like that - comes up with the best leadership analogies!
Great point Jacie! Every has to be involved.
Russ, FL principal. Good morning
What awesome analogies everyone is sharing to answer Q1!
A1 school culture allows great leadership to happen. Great culture allows leaders to try new ideas & make people happy.
hey guys!! Teacher here. Am I allowed to sit in and spy on this chat? Lol
For admins/leaders, we start with empathy and putting ourselves in the shoes of teachers and students when decisions are made.
A1 Positive shared leadership fosters a positive shared learning culture Leadership models vision for culture- walk the walk.
A1. Your leadership can drive and shape the culture, which is the embedded day to day practices and beliefs of your school.
Agree. Hiring is a huge piece; great point
A1: Effective leaders intentionally focus on building a positive culture. You manage tasks. You lead culture development.
Leaders eat last...it's about empowering everyone. We is smarter than me everyday of the week https://t.co/QkffDeqAQM
A1 This is such a critical point no matter where you lead from and to.
A1: Leadership sets the tone. Culture is fostered by the leadership - what kind of culture you want to foster is up to you
This is definitely something I need to improve on. Talking this week with about this very thing!
A1 In a healthy school, the leader’s vision should be in harmony with the (existing) culture.
A1- leadership is leading where they people are not sure they want to go. With culture go together and c where it takes all of u.
A1 Good leaders (principals) are role models for others.
A1) W/out a solid foundation of trust and a positive culture, leading becomes extremely difficult! should be like peas & carrots 😊
yes, and the vision should be reflected in all actions as part of culture
Missed the question list, can someone repost?
Morning everyone, Paul McGuire principal in Ottawa Canada
A1) Leaders must model the vision and celebrate all practices and successes that support student learning.
We're moving so fast I can't even get a sip of coffee. :)
School leaders should provide intellectual stimulation for teachers and create opportunities for discussion
I agree totally! https://t.co/EoaPUkAx0i
A1 School admin are powerful influencers. Influence can tip culture positive or negative
We have a environment at so we as Ts set the tone for school culture. Building relationships and modeling!
A1: Which is why I'm looking for a school with leaders who embrace this!🙏 https://t.co/lJbk9KPy0F
A1:school leaders absolutely define the culture of a school. They bring their beliefs and look to hire others with the same beliefs
A1: True leaders develop meaningful relationships with students and staff. This fosters growth, community, and culture.
A1 A good ldr does not look at staff & wants to abandon ship, but encourages & support knowing a rising tide raises all ships
A1 culture is leadership - of everyone in the community - wherever a schl culture falls on a continuum https://t.co/7MaMRPRF09
and don’t forget S leadership! We might also want to include parent leadership.
What do you do in concert when you have someone off tune?
Congratulations for being honored as NYS Principal of the Year 2016!
Why is it working from the top down? Can’t it also work bottom up? Or the middle out? Culture is all of us
Absolutely, "shared" is the key.
you owe me nothing- the pleasure was all mine! Hope I contributed something decent!
Totally agree Eric...but I still think the leader sets the tone. Creating a space where everyone can lead rocks
Very true. Culture inherently means that leadership must be shared. Culture change takes a team.
A2) Aside from greeting kids in the halls and staying out of our offices, try teaching a class is my tool of the year
Absolutely https://t.co/hslQ4Ofg5p
A1: School leadership can set the tone for school culture...hopefully a culture of learning...learning by doing.
the core values of a person can't really be changed, but you can further teach and teacher how to teach.
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
LEARNING IS ABOUT MINUTES AND MOMENTS. When students engage minute-by-minute they learn more. Read -> https://t.co/e3FIbYyTu4
A positive or negative school culture is linked to its community and school leadership.
A1. Your Vision first,
then Mission can drive this work.
A2: School leaders should listen before all else
A2: put his “office” in the common space. He was always visible to students and rarely used a closed office space
Yup, we need to equip and empower others as leaders...create more leaders.
A1: the actions of the leader set the tone, foundation for school culture. evrything from listening to gossip to not
A1. Culture is driven by leadership. The more dynamic the culture, the more it is an example of leader's ability 2 empower others.
A2: School leaders are present and engaged when in classrooms, at the desks of Ss, observing, listening, questioning.
A1 Walk the school halls and you'll know the Principal before you meet them.
School culture must include heart, soul & mind to be healthy, balanced and sustainable!
A1 Leaders who have a vision and have high expectations of Ts & Ss will create a culture 4 transformational change
Great school culture is desired by many but they won't make the personal sacrifices to achieve it! As leaders we guide folks there!
A1 as a consultant who works in lots of schools, leaders who trust their teachers leads to innovative positive culture.
A1 Yet "all" is so tough--that celebratory factor can be distributed too.
Yup. Too much change for change’s sake.
Good morning, ! Not usually awake enough to join but some reason I am today! Happy Saturday!
A2: As leaders in a school, we have to model the joy & wonder of learning. Every day, every class, for every S.
That is a great graphic. Thanks for sharing it.
The principal is just 1 of the leaders in a school community.
A2 Go into classrooms not just to observe but to teach which will model what you expect of your staff members. Lead by example.
A2 Popping into class is visibility. Talking with Ts before then coming to join their lesson is engaged. Helping plan, even better!
A2: I'm working on more casual visits to classrooms..
A1) Leader helps bring make clear and visible the purpose of the school and reinforces it through actions.
There has to be a circle of safety as Simon Sinek says. https://t.co/Zr9g0YNvtY
A1:leaders and teachers need to set a comfortable and secure learning environment. People won't take risks and grow without comfort
A2 So important, but not always easy.
in a positive culture you don't have to ask you feel as not only you can do but you should do ...
A2 If you are not present and engaged, you might be the boss, but not a leader / principal.
Today's is MOVING!
Join now! Talking Hacking Leadership w/
Happening NOW!
A2: You need to know student names. If you know those you have done all the other pre-requisite work. that simple.
. We don't do this enough. Truly listen and reflect...don't need the answer all the time...just need to help find it
Yes! Distributive leadership and collaboration.
Building capacity is one of our (leader's) most important jobs.
I see interesting tensions between consistent and dynamic (vs. static) leadership.
A2: Put yourself so you can look with their eyes (Ss and Ts). and Ts. You are connected- locally and globally
A1: Culture and leadership are a shared responsibility. You don't need a title to be a leader
Jaymee-- leader from Texas better late than never
A2: Being visible and accessible is the first step to being engaged.
A2. Just popping into classrooms isn't enough. Talk with Ss, ask questions, share what they're doing/learning with everyone.
we stand outside our classrooms and greet our Ss too! My Ss have the option of a hug, high five/handshake
A2 I'm wondering if patterns help w/this--patterns of walking around school, meeting w/Ss, school assemblies.
Ok & that is all you get me for off to Home Depot for potting soil so I can have a pretty garden
A2 When admins come into my clssrm & interjects their thoughts & ?'s students. Shows they are authentically involved
A2: Lunch with teachers, notes of encouragement, discussions outside of complaining.
A2: Start w/ getting into classrooms and having real conversations with students and teachers. Seek to understand, not just listen.
YAY!!! So glad you are here my friend! Welcome from the big ole state of TX!
A2. Culture and Leadership need to work together, otherwise culture could negatively impact climate.
This Q presumes leadership is static and position driven rather than dispositional in context https://t.co/dkLsk9Mbd8
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
A2: Leave your office. Communicate effectively with your staff. Support Ts. Care about your Ss and don't see them as numbers.
Being visible may be in the best interest of the leader; but being present & engaged is in the best interest of the whole community
A1: leading by example. It's one of those things we all learn in Kindergarten! That is key to school culture. We are all leaders
A1) Leaders help the culture close the knowing doing gap.
QUESTION 2
https://t.co/M9XUAn2exO
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
Yes and trust--trust is so important and needs to be cultivated.
a2. Being present & engaged requires us to see educators as people first. We must take the time to listen to & learn their stories
A2 Don’t understand the Q. School leaders, by definition, should already be present and engaged. If not they’re merely managers.
Gosh how I wished I worked for this leader https://t.co/HVJuT3iXKv
A1 . Intrinsically. Tired of those that underestimate culture. Many think leaders need only be bosses. Go. Do. Jump.
A2-no matter what "big thing" i do- standing in the hallway Btwn classes every day helps more than anything fancy with this .
Absolutely! Leadership is not a title or position - it is actions (that we are all capable of in some way) https://t.co/qp7yk3CG9M
A1.2 I'd also urge us to shift our thinking from school leadership as one person (principal) to all staff - everyone's a leader
This kind of leader mythology, the idea that school culture requires a singular mindset, is educationally stifling.
Yes! ...in other words, ENGAGED with the learning along with the Ss, not just passively observing from a distance.
I still need to have my kids try to breakout our principal !
thank you for stopping by my friend!
Leaders need to be in service of ALL! One of jobs of a leader is to create new leaders
A2 Lead with empathy, listen, serve, get in the trenches, no job too big or too small. https://t.co/wZBDiRdeWQ
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
Good morning Just talked with the students of my course at about your Chat and Topic. :)
so often it seems that negative aspects of poor bldg leadership pollutes the positive culture that exists
A2: being actively involved, having open/honest/authentic dialogs with all stakeholders, & be a leader of learning
A2: By showing support for teachers and students and taking little moments from your day to stop and say hi in the hallway, etc...
A2: my admin have an open door policy where we can come in and talk to them whenever. So thankful for that!!
From grey and rainy NJ A2 two way communication is key, esp listening to all parties Ts,Ss, Ps Admin
a2) not just talking the talk but walking the walk! Getting down with the nitty gritty and not being afraid to get hands dirty
A2 getting into the classrooms cafeterias, hallways, and seeking feedback from everyone
A2: Being seen in each other's classrooms lets Ss know we are engaged with one another.
absolutely. It's reciprocal in nature for everyone.
Relationships are so key. When leadership has positive relationships with students staff and parents, culture can shift.
Yes! Well said https://t.co/fwQGt4ZcjS
Culture in schools is built on relationships. Want a positive culture? You need healthy relationships rooted in trust & respect!
Conversations will shape your school's culture. Leadership is conversations. Make it a point to engage with more people.
A2 Being in classrooms. Listening. Asking parents. Asking students what they think. Listening. Asking staff for input. Listening
A2 An ongoing conversation helps--"How's it going, popping in,sharing ideas. . ." natural
hopefully they come out and talk to you too!
Definitely school leaders need to teach a class. My father was a headmaster for 30 years and he always tried to spend time in class
And reflect that of the district. Mixed messages and vision can be toxic.
And those informal leaders will either support the growth of culture or break it down. https://t.co/Zp4zdmAjlP
A1: Leadership is part of the culture but leadership is not exclusive of those with the title. Informal leaders have impact too
A2- it is a must to be engaged in the leadership role. Engagement shows investment and an invested culture will be successful.
I defintely agree https://t.co/wdGAJtG83Y
A1 Leaders share their vision for S centered, learning focused culture & opens the door for everyone to play a part in building it
A2: First, in elementary - make sure you are out there for every recess - seems simple but makes a big difference
That would be great to see! https://t.co/OoiTsM3wY0
A2 Go into classrooms not just to observe but to teach which will model what you expect of your staff members. Lead by example.
A2 Visible common goals, culture, priorities too.
A2 Conversations will shape your school's culture. Leadership is conversations. Make it a point to engage with more people.
A2 I love when leaders visiting our classroom engage w/ kids & create a positive vibe that adds to forward momentum. Participate!
yes leadership is continual contextual action, not a title or set of tasks.
A2: Be involved, get feedback from T's, P's, S's often to make positive changes. Make T's feel that their opinion is valued.
A2)Start by putting down our devices! Get out of the office--walk, talk, listen, and encourage. https://t.co/oHjZM1r7LT
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
It's an amazing experience. Thanks.
School leaders must possess knowledge & skills to effectively engage and support his/her teachers
A2: I think we stress over this idea too much, just be who you are, Ss will love you for that alone.
A2: provides mobile tech allowing admin to be mobile which gives them the opportunity to present, engaged, & involved.
Can we still have some level of productive cognitive dissonance within that context? Is that OK?
A2. I know you're there, but do I know you care.
A2: Promote your School.. share and model what that looks like
A2 school leaders who actively participate in the Professional Learning I implement, making connections to other school priorities
HEALTHY is the key word here. https://t.co/jm6n15D2Lt
A1 In a healthy school, the leader’s vision should be in harmony with the (existing) culture.
A2 People first and paper second. Listen. Presume positive intentions. https://t.co/qPfqPnztSR
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
I shouldn't be able to find you in your office as a school leader, you should be out in the building
I disagree students, teachers & our learning community are foundation an pillars. School leaders build & maintain
A2: Interact, Particiapte in the lesson, talk w/ Ss, take notes for Ss if they leave the class, ask ?s do more than walk around
Good morning ! Sorry I'm jumping in late! MS STEM teacher from North Jersey!
A2) Moving beyond "visible" to being "seen" requires positive, purposeful interactions, understanding concerns & communicating
A2. Walk abouts & when opportunities are available, read-alouds, guest teaching. Ts have most vital job in building - reflects that
A1: "The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate." - . EXACTLY!
If you wouldn't follow your team leaders off a cliff, time to figure out a fix.
Good Morning.
Finally back in ClassRMs
Miss Ts +
A2: you show people you care about them, ur committed, and they can trust you. You play your ur role & stay focused on Ss learning
A2 School leaders go from simply being visible to being present +engaged by asking questions +listening more. Learn with Ss and Ts.
A2: Visit teacher's classrooms, make sure you connect with teachers every day
A2 Presence is key--that builds community. Visibility, positivity too.
Yes!! This is the true litmus test of a school's leadership culture...and everything else for that matter.
A2 not just present and engaged but approachable to Ss and Ts if you're in an office make sure the door is open
If leadership has to tell you "you're empowered" than message is being lost ... Should be clear by seeing/feeling culture
A2. Being present and engaged means "living" alongside those we serve: learning, questioning, failing, succeeding.
A2: So many books, articles, & quotes…I’ll go with ‘Seek 1st to understand & then to be understood.’
A2: BE PRESENT! The greatest gift of service to anyone is being completely present when you are with them.
A2 Data is one point that can provide a valuable view into the culture of a building
A2: I'd love to see teacher evaluation merged with lots of informal mini-observations/classroom participations..
We need to be totally honest this AM! You can spend an hour in a school and get a good feel for the leader and leadership!
A2:?Get involved. Participate in lessons, read to classes, talk to any/all stakeholders, do work in the community.
absolutely! We are all still wonderfully different.
Absolutely! And embrace the idea of small steps. One change at a time can lead to big results!
A2 - Read with classes, play kickball, all-time quarterback, home visits, sitting down at lunch tables to talk w/kids!
A2:
Inspire, Innovate, Motivate, Mentor.
Como toros los sábados, educadores norteamericanos unidos por un temas/debate Notable esfuerzo colaborativo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
A2. This requires active conversations w/ Ts & Ss. Tut must go beyond Hi, How are you, and I'm Fine.
I think this is so very important for ALL leaders, need to walk the talk, not just talk it and standby https://t.co/QhYjosUEBB
Yes! ...in other words, ENGAGED with the learning along with the Ss, not just passively observing from a distance.
thank you Scott- that is very kind of you! is an amazing place!
A:2 if we build a culture of learning together Estab Structures which reflect that: Ongoing PL, lesson study, peer feedback, etc
My pet peeve is when she comes to the library & does not ask the kids what they are doing. Come in, talk to them
A2 It's also about being real - being more than someone who sprouts the cliche - hands on, in the bunker with everyone else
Which also says something. This entire conversation is based around a hypothesis that leaders change culture.
A2 Yes, and belonging to circles outside of your school for new ideas, support, common focus.
A2: Being more visible in the halls and modeling the vision with Ts and Ss.
And that happens by using the golden circle and collectively determine the Why. https://t.co/ruQB4oV6Ho
There has to be a circle of safety as Simon Sinek says. https://t.co/Zr9g0YNvtY
A1:leaders and teachers need to set a comfortable and secure learning environment. People won't take risks and grow without comfort
Always make time when anyone asks, do you have a minute? It is always important. A 2
A2: Without information, stakeholders create their own
A2 school leadership is about serving the students (& the school community). Leaders make decisions based on how best to do that.
A2. Observations can't be the only time leaders visit classrooms.
Wow, I am making such a connection to this topic this morning, VERY TIMELY
A2 Do not just manage, but have a vision for the school as a part of the city.
A2 T needs to know a little bit about what's going on in her Ss lives, school ldrs need to know about happenings in classes
A2. Leaders must be intentional about getting involved.
A2: Challenge, for sure. I'm going to read the thread on this one. Desk in hall is an idea for a visual, but not sure needed.
A2: Leaders who are present & engaged are building relationships, listening, and acting on the needs of Ss, parents, & staff.
A2 Make connections with adults and Ss. Smile. Talk. Ask questions. Listen. Celebrate. Be present.
A2. Spend time talking to, and more importantly listening to, staff & students.
Being engaged is about knowing your kids' names, knowing their families & knowing the Ts as people; its all about relationships!
Recognizing one's own limitations as a leader and then boosting others who can support better is vita for school culture
Hey . Fred Ende, Asst. Director of Curriculum, metro NYC. Goooooood morning!
A2. Get into classrooms and become an active learner.
I could not agree more. So many talk but who can "do" I only want to talk to doers.
A2: Truly ask, listen, care, laugh & be. You can be "there," but you need to be THERE. Share your lives not just your roles.
A2: being present means engaging S's and T's in meaningful conversations as you walk the halls and visit classrooms.
EXACTLY Dayson- we must go way above and beyond formal observations as leaders!
A2: Ask questions; seek advice from those around you.
A2: Teaching is the most important thing a school admin can do -Best way to stay connected to Ss and Ts. https://t.co/MaUDn5r0m7
A2: This is a strawman question--no leader ever got to a position by merely being visible. Or maybe I have been extremely lucky.
A2 Get to know those in the school/community. Hear what they're saying (spoken or not)
Couldn't agree with you more. Every time in a classroom shouldn't be for eval. purposes.
A2: Make connections with your parents and especially your surrounding community
A2: Leaders should ask great Qs and then listen to the responses.
I sit on the carpet and get the view from the carpet. Best view EVER!
A2 Leaders should be where learning is happening-In clsrms, w/ Ss, listening to Ts & sharing w/ families-Always build relationships
- too much happening in the school - need a lead learner to oversee, guide, coach, take care of..
A2: Building relationships is key. Communication is a priority. Listened. Transparency. Vulnerability.
Boom! ;) https://t.co/ksQ7GguZSt
Being visible may be in the best interest of the leader; but being present & engaged is in the best interest of the whole community
A2. By practicing mindfulness. Being engaged & present is a deliberate, multisensory action
Pernille, as a central office admin, finding this balance is not easy, but necessary.
and then act on it! (morning my dear)
Absolutley! Asking the right questions is far more important than having all the answers https://t.co/xLBU6ajVZp
A2: Ask questions; seek advice from those around you.
And totally engaged. Level 5 leadership. Ask questions to prove thinking. https://t.co/zJWVURijux
A2: BE PRESENT! The greatest gift of service to anyone is being completely present when you are with them.
A:2.2 leaders model being deeply immersed in the learning process aside by side w/ ALL staff if it truly a learning community
Finding time to develop those relationships is so important.
. as 1st year HS principal dropped in on each stdnt of almost 2K w "birthday" gift -6 years later they expected 2 connect
A2 leadership by definition is engaged. Being only visible is an act of management. Let's not conflate the two
A2: Being visible is a non negotiable, & interacting w/Ss during informal visits asking about learning.Talk to Ts as well 2 support
Hi Pernille. I would like to see leader's paperwork streamlined so they have more time for this.
A2: Be the change you want to see in your school culture. Hi, Susan, joining late :)
A2: I also think part of this is being an individual willing to take chances in the classroom and be willing to share successes.
A2 Great school leaders can both multi-task & hyper-focus. Being truly present demands that we're fully in a moment we're afforded.
A3 Makerspaces!!! It is amazing how they can get students to come out of their shells, engage, and take ownership!
Yes! Getting into classrooms and learn together- talk about teaching and learning https://t.co/NAROBkj0uF
A2. This requires active conversations w/ Ts & Ss. Tut must go beyond Hi, How are you, and I'm Fine.
A2: Visibility loses meaning if the leader isn't purposely seeking to elevate the status of T's and S's.
A2 Sean here from NC joining late. Being visible means being in tune with the moment and authentically engaging unabashedly
So true! Support student fun & learning - don’t just be the behavior hammer when poor choices are made.
A2 Visibility : observation :: presence : participation. I'm catching the analogy bug.
A2: Leaders need to let go of micro-control, get out of office, support T & S initiatives, & practice active listening.
A2- have found that going into a classroom lesson and getting involved answering and asking questions and co-teaching is fun!
a2. In order to take care of others we mustn't forget to take time for ourselves.
Perfect! I love the idea of a continuum as that is true. To use the cliche--are they walking the talk or just talking?
it is powerful but I don't believe something as big as school culture can be or even should be responsibility of one
yes. How to be present? Choose to be present! Give your attention to the person in front of you.
And when they look up at you from that circle, the look on their faces is like you are a rockstar. Keeps me going
Every educator should teach regularly or else they lose sight of children and their needs.
A2: Let Ss and Staff see your human side once in a while. If we can't connect, we are less credible.
A2: visibility without engagement is like hanging a poster. Getting into classrooms, taking lunch duty, out for recess
I've been sitting in desks too, just so see what their view is like!
I think Ts and admin all have too much paper-work. Would be wonderful to stream line for both parties! https://t.co/YKt9XdTZoI
Hi Pernille. I would like to see leader's paperwork streamlined so they have more time for this.
yes indeed and speaks to a high school with s culture of embracing all learners
A2: By caring. Be visible, talk to Ps, Ss, Ts. Listen to them. Be involved.
A2 Good leaders arent afraid to ask the question former NYC mayor Ed Koch always raised, "How am I doin?"
It's kind of like the square rectangle deal: An engaged leader is visible, but a visible leader isn't always engaged. :)
A2: be authentic and purposeful in your interactions. It is clear when an admin is just 'checking a box' to say 'yes, I do that"
Teacher growth based on teacher selected areas-passion projects and demonstration. https://t.co/JoaXuLPF3Z
A2: I'd love to see teacher evaluation merged with lots of informal mini-observations/classroom participations..
Hey ... is here. So...do something special.
A2: We do 'family portraits' - take pictures of families together and give them out - great impact
A2: Presence is vital as a ldr, when u are truly "present" u make meaningful connections w/ Ts & Ss which builds trust & community
A3. Student led conferences have been a vital child-centered roll-out at our school. Ss take complete ownership of their learning
No matter how big your school is, there's always more smart people on the outside, than on the inside, of your school.
Yes! Most other professions/businesses have been practicing this leadership model for years! Time for ed to do the same.
Exactly.. everyone is learning something new and creating together! It’s like a journey!
that is so true Fred- great point!
A2: School leaders are visible when they're in the halls, classes. School leaders are present when they listen to Ss and Ts.
A2 Build relationships with Everyone . Sometimes the people further back see the big pic more accurately
Love this definition of leadership! https://t.co/S8BVsu9qRQ
yes leadership is continual contextual action, not a title or set of tasks.
Know the Ss, know the Ts, participate professional learning with teachers and on own
One should celebrate the attempts to support & advocate for students.
If not acting on it, explain why. (& g'mornin')
she brings the special - we just stand back and watch in awe!
A2 not only listening but follow through, follow through, follow through. sometimes so hard when so much to do
good point about understanding.
A3: Student-centred means honouring S voice, providing choice, studying the S learning experience by listening and observing.
Right. It is always very easy to tell those who want to be somewhre, and those who don't!
A2 Sometimes when things are going well, I call leader and say, "Come on down, you've got to see what Ss are doing!"
An engaged leader should be a connected educator who opens doors of opportunity and communication with their students and staff.
A2 Be a motivated motivator.
Agreed. Every educator is a https://t.co/Oje1pXMbhn leaders need to listen & support teacher leadership https://t.co/IXW7lELfZF
. We don't do this enough. Truly listen and reflect...don't need the answer all the time...just need to help find it
A2: Our supt models this. He is there, visible, but more importantly, he is talking, listening, & building relationships.
Joining a little late, I'm Chantell and I teach 3rd gr in a environment. Next yr I gr to do 4th & be the STEAM room!
A2 Proactive inquiry w/ Ts and Ss on what is happening in the moment of Teaching and Learning.
I think I heard via podcast talk about people by day, paper by night
A2: Limit your time in your office as much as possible!!!!
It's amazing what can happen when we ask good questions and truly listen. https://t.co/VPsxM6BNIQ
A2: Leaders should ask great Qs and then listen to the responses.
YES! Needed this. Visibility is more than showing up. People know when you're going through the motions. https://t.co/8XB8C0qcPJ
A2: Truly ask, listen, care, laugh & be. You can be "there," but you need to be THERE. Share your lives not just your roles.
Definitely….and not an easy thing for leaders. Take 1 cap off and put on another in an instant.
I don't think it has to start at the top. Most often school culture ends up being defined my majority or the loudest
As an admin/leader, admit what you don’t know. I enjoy talking about what I’d do differently now as a teacher.
great to see you here Patti - helps me make connections and pushes my understandings and learning
A2. We have to show up for the moment & suspend judgment/hierarchy.
A2 Get into classrooms, sit with Ss and model learning, questioning, collaborating, relating
A2) Don't log onto your computer first thing, turn off your phone email, be a child and enjoy what you see.
A3: Include students in every decision made in school & give them opportunities to create & own their learning, not just receive it
If you are going to "celebrate" staff, make sure it is authentic and specific & an opportunity to grow!
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
Wonferfully written--we want our Ss to be engaged which means we as Ts & the admin must also strive for the same
This reminder helps being visible. Above my door in my office. Stands for GET THE HECK OUT IF YOUR OFFICE! https://t.co/XVNIzVSDG4
I could write a book on this for sure. Walked it, lived it, left it 😭 https://t.co/4r9F1Po5Uk
A2. Culture and Leadership need to work together, otherwise culture could negatively impact climate.
One of the most important lessons I learned in my development as a school leader. https://t.co/CCVz085oDh
A2 not just present and engaged but approachable to Ss and Ts if you're in an office make sure the door is open
A2 Listen with empathy, build better conversations with All TY
So overstated...but really important, and still it's often overlooked
A2: Visibility is essential, you can't make a difference if you can't be seen
is this also about intention? Do some Ls desire visibility & recognition while others value more subtle success markers?
true and hopefully it's a positive vibe and true learning community. https://t.co/8O4UkH3oXh
We need to be totally honest this AM! You can spend an hour in a school and get a good feel for the leader and leadership!
Yes, it's imperative that the PD be teacher driven in conjunction w/Ss goals/needs, rarely to never one-size-fits-all
You are on a roll this morning. I don't think my coffee has kicked in yet. :-)
A2: Doing WITH - taking action - aft listening. And the doing has to be grounded in a compelling vision. We lack that in
Yes. I don’t understand how a “school leader” worthy of the name could be visible (self-promoting?) and not engaged.
A2: Feedback...feedback...feedback is what teachers, parents and students ❤️
why do we use administration and leadership interchangeably? Admin positions by structure are managerial
This is crucial! https://t.co/t2OU0sgKW2
A2: my admin have an open door policy where we can come in and talk to them whenever. So thankful for that!!
We are automatically engaged and present when we speak, but more meaningful to be engaged/present as a listener.
A2 Like followers, leaders need to value what the follower is doing in order to be invested and engaged rather than just visible
question #3 - https://t.co/m8V6UPBm3N
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
A2: by taking chance and failing publicly but pushing forward
A2: Don't play the "boss" role; be a colleague. We are all trying to lead learning and all learners.
A2 The difference is committing to building relationships. We have to have those conversations
A2. Plus it all goes back to motive & purpose. What's your true goal as you move about?
if that tone is negative then facilitation and rerouting needs to occur-by leader to pull reigns but all to follow
A3: Here’s one way in which I supported student agency and gave them space to own their learning https://t.co/sprChazVLY
A3. Student led conferences have been a vital child-centered roll-out at our school. Ss take complete ownership of their learning
A3: Here’s one way in which I supported student agency and gave them space to own their learning https://t.co/cS8CHVXMAL
interacting with the kids/teachers is the only way to feel the pulse of the school
A3: Student voice and choice is key to moving to student centered. Give them the goals, let them decide how to prove them.
A3 "special appearance" is not engaged. Body language would demonstrate being actively present not hunched and checking phone, etc.
reading book Passionate Learners & starting bk talk with Tts 😉
A3: One thing that has made a huge difference has been going 1:1 - students empowered by their learning tools
If leaders are present and engaged they have to have a good team to keep things going behind the scenes that is good school culture
How am I getting better today?
A4: Ss creating their own Digital Portfolio that carries on through graduation as a showcase of their learning /journey.
One of the principles of 'Be there'
A3: It's all about culture
I agree. School culture can very much start and be encouraged by strong Ts who motivate their Ss
What's the deal with ? Do you question me? Am I Kayako? Am I an actual mac? Just what am I?
A3 Give students voice in the direction of their learning. https://t.co/Me1t7eI7wx
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
Good learning and leading is similar, regardless of the age and role!
And it's every leader's role to find ways to engage outside resources to keep your school relevant to the community!
A2 Yes! At times jumping in w full engagement from the start can b overwhelming 2 Ts. Especially if prev leadership sat at desks
A3: It's all about support. Any structures that support students so that EVERY child can succeed. This is student centered.
I think there has to be a balance. Can't only use tech to connect - but may be only way to connect w some https://t.co/EFEdnYFq0b
A2)Start by putting down our devices! Get out of the office--walk, talk, listen, and encourage. https://t.co/oHjZM1r7LT
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
A3: Let go. Identify the 1 thing that makes you comfortable in your teaching & change it by asking the Ss how to make it better.
Absolutely! the National Network of Partnership Schools is a great organization for P engagement https://t.co/6vS0oG0U0P
A2: Make connections with your parents and especially your surrounding community
A2 Ls work alongside Tss to build professionalism, motivation and trust making a learning community for Ts and Ss
A2 "special appearance" is not engaged. Body language would demonstrate being actively present not hunched and checking phone, etc.
A3) Student voice in school initiatives and future planning. Student choice in learning, assessment, and tech.
I agree. 'Leader' is different to 'Administrator'! Leaders lead, with or without position/title.
A3) empowering Ss to be part of the process: surveys, meetings, committees, events where students are large and in charge! 👍
We can't be part of or support an inclusive community if we are in an office & aren't in the community - visit, listen, get to yes
A3 begins with a vision and culture...why are we here working together and what is it that we believe in
Yes...lots of "visible i.e. self-promoting "leaders" here on Twitter. Does this qualify?
A2.2 Foster positive engagement by living it. Catch people being awesome, tell them you noticed.
WE are moving to this model next year. Any advice? https://t.co/bAGGh3QjxJ
A3. Student led conferences have been a vital child-centered roll-out at our school. Ss take complete ownership of their learning
students & teachers are the school… how are they not holding it up? leaders as the glue holding it together?
you're correct culture is all of us & is symbiotic but the leader drives it.
Want to make your school more about kids? Then start by getting to know your kids!
I think the issue is that leader is being to mean admin, which is really managerial. Leaders could be NE1, Ss included
Differentiated leadership and engagement with Ts while they seek new learning. https://t.co/hwYVFJSThh
Yes, it's imperative that the PD be teacher driven in conjunction w/Ss goals/needs, rarely to never one-size-fits-all
Hahaha...thank you....almost done with 1 cup...must have been the "bold" grounds I brewed this morning!
Administrators manage & administrate.
A3 Structures? We have plenty of those. I’d be curious to talk about what structures we should REMOVE.
A3. Our had been a catalyst for more student centered learning, using and blended learning.
A3: Literally putting learning in their hands. I love "telling stories" but I know there are other ways. Using tech, hands on, etc
A2 Play an instrument? Sit with the band, practice and play in a concert.
A3: our students' works fills the hallways, surveys are sent for students to have a voice (i.e. in new mottos, sayings, etc)
A3) Adding to the conversation of culture is great for adult mindset shifts.
A3 Find places to give students some choice in the day. Somehow. and gather their feedback formal/informal.
Thank goodness it's Saturday
yes, remove the separate and hierarchy. sometimes means sitting in a desk, getting involved
A2 Modeling your expectations engages stakeholders. Actively leading PD engages while set course for ongoing learning for all.
If the negativity comes from the leader, time to get out.
A3 - Student social media interns is awesome - let them from school accounts
sometimes you have to ask the tough questions and be ok with honest answers
A2: have a purpose for your interactions with peers, staff, and students.Drop ins are a start, but genuine engagement is essential.
Think it is more than that. Visibility doesn't have to be "seen" visibility. More subtle benchmarks are visible too!
Hardest thing abt getting view on carpet is getting up. Ss have to help me, that's the funny part! 😂😂😂
A2: I think it depends on the previous culture of with leadership and the approach that will be the most welcomed with Ts and Ss
What makes you so ridiculously fabulous! https://t.co/5e6QI1JyEN
Being engaged is about knowing your kids' names, knowing their families & knowing the Ts as people; its all about relationships!
Right..Scaffolding and providing multiple avenues for Ss is key!
It's important that the team is inclusive or many interacting teams--sometimes one team can be harmful.
A3: Student-centred means honouring S voice, providing choice, studying the S learning experience by listening and observing.
A3: Students need to be trained to use their voice in every classroom.Fairly immediate response to feasible requests need to occur.
A4: Democratize learning through makerspaces- making tools, materials, concepts, and activities available and accessible to ALL Ss
love the idea of student-led conferences!
Access equals agency! https://t.co/PYZIPnIDxo
A3: One thing that has made a huge difference has been going 1:1 - students empowered by their learning tools
Also compelling others, giving Ts the "Why", giving them voice and choice brings engagement of others
A3: Sharing practices, peer observations, video lessons, differentiated PD, all can go long way to create Ss centered classrooms.
A3 It is not about adults or students. It's about learning! Structures should be learning centered. That is the goal.
Yes! I think there are so many wonderful unnoticed moments in ed daily, to be noticed and acknowledged feels great!
20/20 Hindsight. I just understood they were behaving that way. I attributed it to games.
Hi there, Annie from Toronto tuning in late. VP at a junior high.Great discussion!
This week: S:"Mr. Mac, how come kids can't run the school?" Me: "Great question. We should look into that!" https://t.co/koOTRP6QDQ
A3: Include students in every decision made in school & give them opportunities to create & own their learning, not just receive it
I think in an ideal situation yes, but not always, and changing a culture doesn’t have to come from the leader.
A2 Go deep, follow up on conversations and address issues you see.
A3: we have a student council that made suggestion boxes & put them by each classroom. Ss read through suggestions and make changes
A3 Student led edcamps -- check work! and
Kids must have a voice in their educational experience (it's about agency)! It's a key structure to making schools more about kids!
A3: Create ‘space’ for Ss to help solve ‘school’ problems/issues. It doesn’t always have to be an adult driven solution.
agreed- many possible answers & something to constantly reflect on!
Ever wonder why Teacher Appreciation Week's during Standardized Testing Month? Thank you to all! https://t.co/Di6sfQ23MF
A3) Structures are results of intentional mission, vision, beliefs, and collective commitments.
A3 There must be opps for Ss to identify probs & provide input. Our Ss leadership team meets monthly w Ts. https://t.co/nwt4yvR7lx
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
I do like student led conferences. Have always done in Spring only but this yr did both fall and spring
A3: The expectation is that the adults will have to experience discomfort, disequilibrium in order to do what is
I agree we have an internal SM portal we just started for all 3-5 graders.
A3: Give staff ownership of their PD. They feel empowered and it starts a conversation about empowering kids.
and this perspective disrespects the leadership of faculty, students, and families
A culture of positive leadership will create and foster positive Teacher leaders, student leaders, parent leaders. . .
A2 shadow a student for a day, see what is going on in their classes and give Ss a safe space to share their voices
Yes! A putting down devices day would have everyone in the school open their eyes together all at once.A great culture opportunity.
A3 Focus on curiosity & learning above programs. Create space and ability to enquire & to engage in genuine learning??? A hard qu!
Same for us! Student-led conferences have been a game changer for student voice! https://t.co/F1u7XPw58W https://t.co/28592Y4nJh
A3. Student led conferences have been a vital child-centered roll-out at our school. Ss take complete ownership of their learning
A3 a student-centered school is really just a teacher-centered school - autonomy to both; built in accountability
A2:Step outside the office, classroom, away from desk - meet Ss where they are, break norms, dare to be different.
Looking forward to reading Hacking Leadership by & ! When is it being released?
A3: A school culture that allows for risk in creating student centered class. Allow teachers to have permission to fail & reflect.
A3: Asking students how they want to learn, we can build a learning env. that teaches content and allows for learning/growth.
A3: Do things that interest the students; incorporating their interests in to curriculum or for special days is huge
I agree! Sometimes we forget that as adults & leaders. Ts need "voice & choice", "genius hour" & "games" as much as Ss!
A3: Student centered means this whole thing is for them--every one of them, and we need to do whatever it takes..
A3: the ironic thing is if you want a student centered school you have to fill the needs of the adults so they can focus on Ss
Our Ss gave us feedback on our music class and it was great. Just ordered guitars and drum sticks because that is what we learned.
A:3 morning meeting and closing circles, fluid student advisory groups, 20%, anything which supports more ice
A3: PBLs are a great way to allow students to have a voice and choice
It's great to survey students to get feedback on how we're doing. https://t.co/YVIDDuQhtA
A3: our students' works fills the hallways, surveys are sent for students to have a voice (i.e. in new mottos, sayings, etc)
A3: Allow more choice for Ss.
A3: it's all about culture. Once everyone works together it is all about providing resources. https://t.co/oJfq7vQkkC
A3: Supporting our 1:1 program with T centered PD. Giving Ts specific ways to create student- centered lessons
A3 when thinking of facilities, think collaborative student spaces, comfortable, colorful..
A3: There are too many structures already! My mantra is: how do Ss learn in the wild? Now, & end captivity!
set clear expectations on student "centeredness" and hire based on this premise.
Students
__________
Everything
is now trending in USA, ranking 1
but subtle leadership might be empowering others or stepping back so someone else can step forward. Much less obvious.
A3 sorry just jumping on! transformed my classroom into student led more than I thought possible also ROCKS!
A3: As long as more parts of building accessible to adults than kids, students will know their true place. Physical space matters.
A3: Ts have to be comfortable with letting their voices become whispers so that Ss voices can emerge. Same with leaders/teachers.
A3 Involve Ss in decision making, not just as visible part, but (revisiting Q2) as present and engaged.
My fourth graders always knew what worked/didn’t work…Engage Ss in serious conversations and act on their ideas.

Morning assemblies each AM let kids know they come first! https://t.co/saHKgVbdHL
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
Thanks for pointing this out--capacity is key, and emotional health is included!
Yup, this. Recognizing this is critical. https://t.co/4tBPnp4dpg
Recognizing one's own limitations as a leader and then boosting others who can support better is vita for school culture
Observing the culture in the beginning is important & missed when jumping in full force.Need to know the people first.
You can't be fully engaged if you are always thinking about when the next weekend or holiday is coming.
A3: We have just started an open online chat for all 3-5 graders to share ideas and help each other. It is a walled garden though.
A3. A culture of listening helps. If we want to make a difference, everyone in the school must have a voice that is heard.
A3 empower teachers to make judgments about differentiating the curriculum to allow students to self-direct their learning.
A3 S’s need to be empowered on how to measure their own learning and learn how it provides for their own passions to be explored.
Our all school assembly is very powerful and run by Ss--happens each week, lots of Ss share. Powerful, postive

A3: every decision needs to be looked at through the lens of student learning and engagement.
Using writing workshop model lets students have a voice.
At your school, are the students banging down the doors to get IN or out?
It really is all about the students!
Try to have empathy for school leadership. At the same time, they have to earn it. Too many school leaders don't know how to lead.
A3. Get Ss involved in the school decisions. Provide choice in classrooms. Provide opportunities for Ss can make a huge difference.
A3 Ss invested in their ed. We bring HS Ss to content meetings n with a set of norms discuss hard to teach/hard to learn concepts.
Just like what we want in the classroom
A3: Show examples of how being student centered = everyone is winning; more learning, better teaching, engaged families
Ss made stuff at🏠+ brought it to school. One kid - made a cardboard📚out of dense box material. He was so proud.
A3: Create more equitible learning opportunities for all Ss. Better prepare & provide ample support for all Ts help all Ss succeed.
A3. Increase opportunities for student voice in your school.
A3 Seriously consider how we use time & space-Compartmentalized subjects must give way to projects/studios/labs-Ss driving-engaged
It's who we are there to serve, who better to talk too! https://t.co/dovfwqpyX0
A3 Involve Ss in decision making, not just as visible part, but (revisiting Q2) as present and engaged.
this is real 21st century stuff! https://t.co/zg1VHzmYof

A3: bring back recess time! Kids need movement 😀
Why not lead them in setting their own goals instead of giving them goals? https://t.co/sJTT6ypNWC
A3: Student voice and choice is key to moving to student centered. Give them the goals, let them decide how to prove them.
A3: How could S's be involved in the hiring process?
agreed, the paperwork has gotten ridiculous
A3: Involve Ss on vision planning teams and find ways for them to support learning ie. Student Help desk, Makerspace Leaders, etc.
a3. I think by spending more time letting kids pursue their strengths & less time reminding them of their weaknesses.
This = Brilliant! https://t.co/wHW1srMNIH
A4: Democratize learning through makerspaces- making tools, materials, concepts, and activities available and accessible to ALL Ss
A3. Also, the school must be more than a building. Engagement starts when people want to be somewhere; school must be "living."
A3 Still applies no matter your age--change kids to Followers, Faculty, Adults or Team members https://t.co/5Rbw0HtdMA
A3: We help kids discover their genius, even if it is something we know little about. We foster curiosity, DAILY.

A3 We do our part from PTO by giving them opps to share their knowledge, perspective, talents. segments are always a fave
And why are we never talking about it in schools?
Ha! I will have to hack a bootleg copy. https://t.co/bFOQZeekMK
Early June!!! Our moms already bought most of the copies though, Sean. Sorry. https://t.co/5IFJOHBQkv
Looking forward to reading Hacking Leadership by & ! When is it being released?
A3 It also must be about student needs, not just wants. What we need & what we want are not always the same 😊
A3: Giving Ss a voice & choice is key. Your culture should be that Ss are comfortable with sharing & know they can make an impact.
A3 Throw out "scholarly studies" & stereotypes. Know your Ss as unique individuals they are.Anything else is following a program
A3 exactly! If we truly believe in student-centered schools, we will be intentional in creating them. https://t.co/0KPglvB0pb
A3) Structures are results of intentional mission, vision, beliefs, and collective commitments.
A2 Weave yourself into the fabric of the school. Be more than an observer.
In my new STEAM Rool learning and discovery is often pupil led
so this misuse of language i.e. admin=leader, seems to be constraining at the very least
A3: Need more student choice and voice. Time to explore, create, share, make, and learn and have FUN. Environments that allow it.
https://t.co/EvdTG1IaMn Create a Growth Mindset space where the entire school is encouraged to solve a problem together.
A3-Build/support a culture where authentic student voice is shared, heard & honoured. https://t.co/eAMzAQN499

air mask on adults before kids but the end focus still has to be on SS learning
A3: Foster schools that create classrooms for independent learners, opportunities for T/S ownership, success, & differentiation.
Ss project leadership is one way to do this, Ted. Inspiring when it happens.
If resistance to change rests solely on teacher-centered reasons you are using the wrong compass to guide decisions.
Our kids have often commented that they appreciate how much I share about my life with them! Relationships!
Agree - Staff see through empty celebrations & meaning/purpose becomes lost https://t.co/mCSXiqMUvt
If you are going to "celebrate" staff, make sure it is authentic and specific & an opportunity to grow!
it is hard to find that balance
what city in the US Is the most dog friendly?
A3 Ssmust have a voice and be invested in their own learning and Ls must model enthusiasm for life long learning
Agreed! Great Leaders don't sit on the sidelines. They are involved in the action. https://t.co/Mp9VPeMW2E
A2 Weave yourself into the fabric of the school. Be more than an observer.
A3 We make sure Ss are compelled to learn by offering the opportunities that are relevant and meaningful
A3: Create S cabinet where they get to make decisions that become reality. Allow S choice. Make sure decisions place students first
This is what should be happening everywhere. Kudos for doing it!
A3 Community/classroom meetings when you ask Ss what they need, want, desire also very empowering, positive.
Yes we want if for the kids but fear it for ourselves. https://t.co/cInHNxdzzm

A3 If we want students to make better decisions, we need to give them the opportunity to practice.
Yes! Don't be afraid to get uncomfortable.
A4p1: transparency, authenticity, lead learner, & decisive in decision making
this is the Golden Ticket! Ss & Ts should see you, engage w/you, have rapport w/you. https://t.co/IYopk2poW1
I shouldn't be able to find you in your office as a school leader, you should be out in the building
PD gave overview & let Ts know Principal, AP & I were serious about it. Promotion across various mediums to parents
Portfolios are so important. Ss really own their learning and love to share it. Love to hear their reflections.
Hey ! and the knowing they can make an impact I've learned = crazy motivation!:)
A3:involve students in everyday life at school. They need to feel as connected as everyone else. They are our focus-get them involved!
A3) Ts embracing the technology students want and need to be 21st century skilled. https://t.co/KN3gk4Swpe
A3: the ironic thing is if you want a student centered school you have to fill the needs of the adults so they can focus on Ss
I think it is always present, but we don't deliberately discuss the impact. That needs to change.
I learned that early--could never do anything even as a child without the "why" --always offer rationale.
Perfectly stated! That comfortability should be built on a foundation of supporting risk-taking for Ss. https://t.co/DeHHXYMfHL
A3: Giving Ss a voice & choice is key. Your culture should be that Ss are comfortable with sharing & know they can make an impact.
👊🏻 My brother! https://t.co/VgjZAZkus6
A3 - Student social media interns is awesome - let them from school accounts
A3: i think with this we get stuck at the mindset work and don't provide opportunities or avenues for this. Talk here is only half.
A3 I feel like a positive shift happens when leaders stop "observing" and start engaging...leaders in all realms of ed.
A3 We could design our physical space with children in mind, room to move stand, collaborate in small group, whole group
YES! Totally agree- modeling is a big part of the process!
Then they own it! https://t.co/i1gGQOGzCC
A3 I don't know about student center for everything. I teach my Ss to be advocates of their own learning.
A3: having at all levels of school decision making. Empower your learners! https://t.co/hyq9hNTN0S

A3 start w saying yes not "no or yea but" 2 ideas/projects that say kids' voices matter, their power/agency & influence is valued
Yes! https://t.co/TSdRPH4UUf
A3 S’s need to be empowered on how to measure their own learning and learn how it provides for their own passions to be explored.
How else did you let parents know about it? Letter home....and...?
A3: Give Ss an opportunity to lead by teaching. A student taught me how to play a new game so we could use it in the classroom!
A3: We are developing a student leadership team comprised of all kids as opposed to just stuco.
I agree. But that doesn't mean the leader is any less visible. Someone still notices this leadership move and values it.
Wow sad we even have to say this
If we include Ss in leadrship we develop S voice + model shared leadership while being present + engaged.
https://t.co/f9Bwd4h3dC
A3. Get Ss involved in the school decisions. Provide choice in classrooms. Provide opportunities for Ss can make a huge difference.
A4p2: not being afraid to say you don't know or that you were wrong
A3 Design courses of study with an eye to 2025, not the comfort zone of 2010.
A3 This is so important. Sometimes Ss say, why did ___get___? I say, "They asked for it."
A4 Honesty and support. Everyone wants to feel like the leaders have their backs instead of being "against" them
A3: Expose Ss to a variety of opportunities. Through camps, clubs, school makerspaces and having PBL in classes.
A3- allow Ts to take risks w/o fear of failure as they adjust to a student centered environment
Q4: What leadership traits do staff members and students value most in a leader?
A3 Have the courage to teach! That is what students want, – Give strutctures that enable teaching. Do not try to be only a coach.
I've found this and restorative practices to truly give S's ownership of their school https://t.co/2Qkhn7HtXA
A3: we do . Amazing. If you haven't looked into it. You must!!!
I think we have to be intentional about providing a voice to our Ss about what's best. Not just adults.
Students should have actual seats at the table on committees
. how come al the smart tweets remind me of you? https://t.co/4s1THqbVMY
A2.2 Foster positive engagement by living it. Catch people being awesome, tell them you noticed.
Good morning... From Tennessee
How do you get them involved in your school?
personalized leadership, great!
WooHooo https://t.co/MuxgH5UEDV
A3: every decision needs to be looked at through the lens of student learning and engagement.
Let's tell the truth here: The majority of people in key leadership positions -schools and other - shouldn't be in those positions.
A3: In a student centered classroom, we should have a hard time picking out the T, as they are working side by side with students
A3) Encourage Ts to be innovative w/first goal to engage Ss giving them voice/choice, genius hour, makerspaces, gamification;
It really has it's truly a win-win for all school stakeholders. Turns in a beneficial parent engagement school night too!
Yes! Lots of authentic self advocacy opportunities every where we look!
Yes, and when you create that community in collaboration w/learning team:families, Ss, T's, leaders--so powerful.
That is fantastic! Totally needed in schools.
A4: Leadership traits: authenticity/honesty, compassion, being a learner, a listener and collaborator, walking the talk.
I like that. It's not a sin to have a countdown. The problem is in focusing too much on it.
A4: Best Leader Qualities
Honesty
Humor
Communication
Commitment
Confidence
Inspiration
Positivity
Intuition
Open Mind
Open ears
A3 Find ways to include ALL Ss. Self-contained Ss should have a say with grade level peers. They know when they're not included.
A4 Teachers want leaders who listen, allow them to be innovative, are realistic, caring, supportive & model their expectations.
Empower students - student led tech support, student voice in clubs, voice in spirit weeks, units, service projects
For those of us moving to standards based report cards this make perfect sense! https://t.co/cy2JIDEtv6
Give a kid a grade, the learning stops. Give a kid feedback & extending questions, learning goes deeper. https://t.co/4i3UBKURsX
A3. As someone who works primarily with adult learners, I often feel we think "whole child" but not "whole learner."

A4. I value transparency, consistency and someone who is willing to take risks. My Ss value someone who will listen
It's not easy, right Maureen? That's why a simple mantra like, "Is this decision what's best for kids?" can guide us.
A5: Using the Edcamp structure, it allow us to make PD more meaningful and gives a sense of ownership?
listen to Obama's speech about teaching & schools, you have to watch. Also national teacher of year speaks https://t.co/GzRfPKfROQ

I want to work there https://t.co/wDv67cZDF4
My principal is knowledgable, kind, and calm and always puts kids first
A5 At its ❤, genius hour is self directed. Choice can empower, energize learners of any age.
A5- is the best thing that happened to my classes , imagine what that idea could do to our PD and PLNs!
Ss need Ts who support every S no matter how unloving some Ss may be. Behaviors = tough lives, not bad kids https://t.co/lSfHJcAF9g
A5: We should do interest or strength inventories and then tailor our learning goals to build on those interests and strengths
A5 - allows Ts to tinker + create - make sure they play w/ during this time, it's transformational!

a5 Giving Ts and Ss voice and choice in the way they learn is not only good modeling but necessary for promoting growth
A3: we must engage students in authentic conversations that say "I see you & I want to better know what makes you YOU."
A3: My director's mantra is "It's not about what you teach, it's about what they learn." S centered requires intentional design
A3 paying attention 2 social emotional health as much as academic success Advisory, club offerings, late start time
This is critical--so much time is wasted on senseless PD-often dehumanizing.
A5. School leaders who want to encourage the genius hour philosophy with their staff for PD need to transform teacher meeting time.
A5: Give them TIME for PD in their regular work day!
If we can use geniusPD for staff couldn't we begin doing the same for Ss?

I struggle with this when put my standards on lesson plans b/c so many of my kids need more b4 than can do. i adjust
if Ss are having a greater say in classroom activities, Ts should have a greater say in mtgs/ PD. Involve those who are impacted
No you're right it shouldn't be, but often is. We need it to become the norm. https://t.co/2WRvFVYtLs
A5: Professional learning should not be a mandate or directive, but rather a natural progression of life long learning and inquiry
Ohhhh! That is fantastic! Hats off to you for starting this club. They are lucky to have you in the community!
Absolutely. We should differentiate Professional Learning in the same way that we differentiate instruction for Ss
always wonder how energy, enthusiasm & delight of "genius hour" become more a part of every hour in school not an add on
A5 By spicing up the "have to"s with time and resources for the "want to"s. Help Ts reignite their passions. It will spread to Ss
A5b:Time is the most precious gift admin can give Ts. If some don't use the time wisely, talk to THEM and let the rest of us create
Just spent two days at learning of the design model! Incredible experience, and a lot of focus on the empathy!
Best evals ever from staff. Complete ownership and driven by need.

Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
I think so and the length/degree of final year assessments also agitate Ss, changing focus
A5 We did that this year, Reuben. It was great. We need to do it more.

The workshop model for all learners https://t.co/tgJFgSh2BV
It is time to categorize PD- some for the whole staff, some for small groups w/ choice & some teacher directed & personalized!
A5 Agreed. Even more important, all teachers must believe that they can & should be awesome teachers.
A5: We need the gift of time!
A5: encourage and support Ts to follow their interests , connecting with others, and solving real-world classroom issues.
You wouldn't like me.
iFeel threatened by ambitious women willing to imprison😠 to get ahead in careers.
Q5 gets to the heart of "everyone can lead". Management steps back while leaders envision and co-create their learning community
The key is that any high quality and valued PD is targeted and organic to meet the need vs, 1-size-fits-all.
A5: Genius hour influence...classroom becomes like a 'laboratory' where we study/research the learning experiences of our Ss daily.
A5 Leading with the question, "What problem do you want to solve?" leads learners to answer, "Who owns the learning?"
Give teachers permission to take a break from the "pacing calendars." A5
A2 Start with »sapere aude« and continue with »sapere educare«
A5- some of my Ss doing yesterday - learning & creating outside the classroom! Imagine that! https://t.co/Lf0CVv9qlD
A5 Professional Learning Opportunities should be personal, meaningful & designed to strengthen Ts knowledge/passion/expertise:GHour
Time to go to soccer. I'll catch up on the convo's later. Thanks
A5. Create safe space & time for Ts to own learning. School leaders should do same! Can't model if we aren't in process of doing.
I think it's about providing choice & encouraging a culture of following own passions & own learning trajectories.
A5.2 School leaders can offer/invite many paths to reach a common goal.
Agree that will come as we raise the profession up, and prompt "autonomy, mastery, and purpose" for all T's
I work at an incredible school in an incredible district
The principal is the school leader of the school's leaders.
A5. Having a time set aside to work on whatever I want in regards to my practice or passion, I'd be on cloud 9
A5: PD should improve our classroom practices not something we sit & get. When Ts are actively involved, they are impacted & grow.
Which is a win for all since that culture & energy would likely spill over to students & community https://t.co/KxZxUIgwcI
A5: Professional learning should not be a mandate or directive, but rather a natural progression of life long learning and inquiry
I attended my first Edcamp event last month, great event!
YES! YES! YES! https://t.co/8Ova4G7dNI
A5: Incorporate style sessions into PD. Promote/engage-in Twitter chats. Create an atmosphere of constant learning - model
Some Ts get that while others don't. They are so tired that they aren't looking outward
Personalized in Ts choice or Personalized in content for them? I think content for them some choice when appropriate
A5: We use The Hero's Journey to drive all our PD. What is your Call to Adventure? Thx to ! https://t.co/zjybZDyNbp
A5 Nicole, this is where creativity helps--there's lots of ways to make time in schools, but we have to think together.
School leaders must be flexible & attuned: asks himself, "what does the building need me to be right now."
A5. Think of the awesome PBL that could come out of teacher
A5 Set aside structured time for teachers to pursue development needs and encourage exploration of new interests
I would like to learn more about this concept….
A5-expose Ts to a variety of paths & then get out of their way & support their journey https://t.co/ZbzTLZel5X
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
We've been doing it, too. And the feedback has been extremely positive!
A5: Have examples and video of what could be so the idea isn't as abstract. Have Ss talk to Ts about what they want.
A5 Allow Ts to follow & develop their passion, mine is science, was a science phobic, had a leader who nurtured my steps N changing
A5: wait you want us to teach teachers like we teach Ss? Oh because it's best practice! Be purposeful and relevant in ur PD
Love this quote! Reminds us all education is important and we mustn't forget it serves multiple purposes https://t.co/cIgjMl52cO
Choose Your Own Adventure PD!
via https://t.co/0OyjBGFoyl
That's why we do Choose Your Own Adventure PD Ts seem to like it. https://t.co/l8yVo7EcKU
A3: Give staff ownership of their PD. They feel empowered and it starts a conversation about empowering kids.
The Mikes with another great sidebar convo. Thanks, Mikes. Appreciating your ideas this AM
if U experience open communication, value, trust U won't go back 2 "my way" ldrs
A5 Yes, I love that focus, Dennis--truly empowers Ss and sets them up well for their lives.
A5: Let'em see it in action. Allowing Ts to explore&learn on their own will inspire them to change the way they foster S learning
There's lots of good game on here, but no clear plan or strategy. What's really going to change, leaders? It's up to YOU.
And small shifts in language from professional development to developing professionally promotes continual growth.
A5) underscores importance of asking ?s that don't have easy answers & then explore/solve; Ts benefit same focus/action
promoting a instead of some mandate is the way to go...share the vision & let Ts be the experts they are.
A5: Somewhat related. Our WW2 research project this year allowed students to pick topics. The passion was the best I've ever seen.
Go from good to awesome! https://t.co/8H91R7uJhH
A5: We should do interest or strength inventories and then tailor our learning goals to build on those interests and strengths
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
Awesome! Gets ownership of the problem and the authority to help design the solution!
Leaders can make/break a school culture. Tyranny not=to leadership. Be open, kind, and always approach to help not punish/shame.
Every time we facilitate PD we have another opportunity to model best practice w/ teachers.
which is part of the problem with teacher evals in most places. The same rule applies to adults.
A5: When we consider how we study that which we are passionate about, we shud B studying our Ss & how they learn, thrive in Clss.
A5 Curiosity, agency & a love of learning seem like non-negotiables in the teaching profession to me.
ok, now that we've dispensed with the turtledoves, let's

Haha. Well, ambitious doesn't necessarily equate opportunistic.
Q5: Ooh I know, it's called the Smackdown! https://t.co/5woBPYgWe4
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A5: Model what we want in our classrooms. PD will offer voice & motivate Ts to take charge of their learning
LAST QUESTION FOR COMING UP!
so true..and a must share!
PD should be driven by collective voices... some driven by the individual needs & some driven by school-wide needs w/ choice!
A5 allow teachers to pull away from the pacing curriculum and let learning come alive
It must be disappointing at times to compare + for the structure to not match what you believe priorities ought to be.
I agree but try to get a consistently unhappy person to grow. Envio allows it
I see you also couldn’t choose just one - great list!
A5: allows kids to explore their curious nature and find out why things work (or don't work). https://t.co/SaKarUXfRt
my 3rd grade readers planning a parent wkshop @ what Ss can do in summer for reading... https://t.co/L6aGznbhCw
And Ss begin to get nervous for summer--it isn't a positive change for every Ss
Thanks Pam, for putting it that way. That is what I was going for!
A4 asked tchers what do you want to learn and they pursued different paths together or individually to pursue that
Just want to say TY for all the follows/networking connections. The more diverse in talents, the better the team!!
Knowing your Ts, seeing their needs and directing them to resources, makes Ts feel validated
A5 PD through Genius hour allows teachers to grow and follow their own passion. Powerful tool to reignite Ts own love of learning
So true! Every child, every person has a story. Every child every person has potential to be developed. https://t.co/zNhTcDLkIH
Ss need Ts who support every S no matter how unloving some Ss may be. Behaviors = tough lives, not bad kids https://t.co/lSfHJcAF9g
Or why doesn't count??? https://t.co/wGSN9JGGJI
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
I like the Professional Learning Menu idea--T's choose venue(s) they want, obligation to share/present learning in end.
Good morning! Hope you're doing well, Gwen.
Did a fellowship with last summer. we were actually in science labs learning, then brought that science to classroom
When we promote "grit" and "rigor" over patience and compassion while teaching, we have lost our way.
YES IT DOES!! is AWESOME PD!
I'd forgotten how fast this thing moves!
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
Thank you for amazing topic, discussions, and learning from all of you.
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
B4 delivers the last Q: Happy Mother's Day out there to all the moms!
A5.2. I had conspiracy theories explored, Holocaust survivors personally met, comic book origins, etc. Really interesting stuff.
my admin let me borrow the book The Power of Our Words. It changed the way I talk to my students!
What would be on a year-long professional learning list for T's--then they choose their own path.
Well I can't argue with that. Good point.
Terrific idea! Providing Ps with a menu of "how to" have your Ss have a successful, engaging summer w/o summer slack
and will also teach them to self advocate! essential skills... https://t.co/0Ubj61omuM
A3 We have to stop equating everything to respect and compliance. We are working with kids. They need to know we have their back.
Q5:You have to know your staff, their strengths, & experiences then provide opportunities for sharing.
A5 From : create PD structure that allows Ts to design own PD: pinterest, twitter chats, google, etc--digital badges
Bravely go where no one has gone before https://t.co/ZshLRX7QFz
A3 - Student social media interns is awesome - let them from school accounts
look at you dropping words of wisdom so early in the AM! The DOE is lucky to have you on board my friend!
A5: What if we created ‘research teams’ at the B.O.Y. focused on exploring issues aligned to the mission of the school?
I wish my Ts had helped me develop my passions early on https://t.co/MsKglDLQ5f
A5) Allowing teachers to discover and share their passions is rarely a bad thing. Just think of the learning that could take place
Want to start year w/infographic project that brings our class facts/stories to light visually.
A5. Ensure PD is wanted and needed. Also, let Ts lead PD. Don't let expertise in buildings go untapped.
and so often this opportunity is lost.
A5: Be open to ideas that PD can & does occur through different avenues. For example, Skype and GHO with Ts beyond the school walls.
A6: The institutionalized culture of the status quo. It’s up to me to be an agent for change. https://t.co/5TSNXhaWjD
A6 Greatest challenges are forces outside education dictating school reform
Accountability as 4-letter word? What middle ground has been or can be effectively staked out? https://t.co/PFAtGT4oZ9
Get tired of idea I must "prove" i got "something" out of PD to someone else. Is PD to help me, or to make someone else happy?
A5 choice is impt for Ts just like w/Ss LOVE how did her own w/Ts -great way to feel confident to try w/Ss!
Excellent point https://t.co/jRjjRccCsB
A5- sometimes I visit a museum or read a great book, and wonder why that didn't count as PD but a mtg on spreadsheets did
A5: Allow time for creative juices to flow through hands on differentiated activities. Always celebrate successes!
What?!? That went by fast! And I participated the whole time using my phone. 😮 📞 https://t.co/ap6YrzafJW
LAST QUESTION FOR COMING UP!
Question 6 and it's a tough one!
https://t.co/nWq9i3LU8b
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
A6: Getting buy in from everyone.
Does anyone have a good suggestion on a company to develop a school app?
Just getting up SC & SL are like Coca-Cola...can't have one without other. https://t.co/tB3DLSaIIO
Q1: How are school culture and school leadership connected?
A5 Just like we value giving S's voice and choice with their learning, we should do the same with Teachers and their PD
District had new initiative. Principal gave us released time to plan. Initiative happened. Boom!
I love the sound of this! How did you introduce it to the staff?
Love to hear more about this--wanting to develop greater cultural proficiency, agency in all projects/learning next year.
A6) Having everyone to be all in and to stay focus on that vision. After you have a shared vision.
A6 I would think being an admin is a constant balancing act since everyone want you on "their side"; Ss, parents, Ts
having said that, the BEST I've experienced in a long time was done by . Dude nails it!
A6. Effectively reaching district & state requirements, while being visible in an edu climate nationally that can be challenging
ohhhh, you have me thinking all sorta cool things with this one !
A6. The greatest challenge facing school leaders is adapting to how & where students learn using technology. Do we need buildings?

You are so right--everyone happy, working, collaborating, engaged--replicate for every hour!
A6 Remaining/becoming committed to a true school culture of learning & curiosity over a culture of earning, testing & compliance.
My bed won't let me leave
A6: Maintaining balance and focus on what's best for kids while juggling management of mandates that aren't always kid-focused
"my way" ldrs in coaching, principaling, teaching, politicking -compliance-focus
A6: The testing/accountability driver is getting in the way of innovation.
What if Ts and S could have a genius hour to model their interest outside of school THAT would b a relationship builder
A6 Bureaucracy and other peoples agendas that divert from the mission and vision of the organization
not really, sometimes testiness can surface real issues. Only matters where power over indvs is involved
A6. Greatest challenge facing school leaders 2day is state & federal initiatives requiring more time 2 complete paperwork n offices
A6: Personally, lack of time is my biggest challenge as an educational leader
A6 Past conceptions of how school should be, present fear of change & future evidence of the value of innovation
A6 For me has to be the reform agenda in NYS although with new regents on board seeming some change
So true, you have to have shared vision to accomplish anything!
A6 - All the 'tasks' we must do that have ZERO positive impact on kids, teachers, community and are NOT relevant in 2016.
A5: is about allowing time for self-driven learning. Shouldn't that be the focus for kids and adults?!
A6: Not change that comes w/computers, it's state changes come w/out support. Admin. do their best, but w/out funds, it's tough
leadership models for schools are outdated--there seems to be lots of tension w/regard to roles and how they work.
I dont think it has to Andrew! How mandates & policies play out in our schools is up to us!
how much longer, Adam? I'm thinking of jumping back in. You're an inspiration!
I am looking forward to people's answers to Q5. We've tried different modes, some successful & some. It's a work in progress.

Greatest challenge facing leaders? Balancing unreasonable mandates/policies while trying to do what is in the best interest of kids
Love that Andy. Well said.
A6 Being everything to everyone and knowing you will never be able to be https://t.co/OtKKicvz7O
Q6: What is the greatest challenge facing school leaders today?
A6: Culture so removed from natural world that we award diplomas to Ss who have no idea where their food/water comes from.
I'll keep you posted. I participated in last weekend and have been researching this week in spare time
A5: Genius hour influence...classroom becomes like a 'laboratory' where we study/research the learning experiences of our Ss daily.
Good morning & congrats Don!!
Tweeting the scandal family!!! 💚😘💟💚💗💗👉💕👉💗👉
OMG yes!!! https://t.co/cRcMaFChL4
A5: Personalizing PD for Ts is as essential as personalizing learning for Ss, Self-directed, relevant and so, effective.
A6 other colleagues and admins going with status quo drives me nuts
A6: Adapting to change and inability of some Ts to hand over a greater degree of learning to their students.
GHOST🎥Of Girlfriends Past🎥
I don't want to 'hack' into the discussion, but this may be the most awesome group of people ever engaged in !
A6 There's been so much work w/T's, but seems to be little consistent work w/Leaders--time for that.
A6 The greatest challenge school leaders or any leader has is apathy and disconnect; not seeing the value in what you are doing
A6 The timeless one: navigating between what's best for all learners & what's best for each learner
I'm a fan of a newer term: "Build In." We are always more invested when we make something, rather than buy it!
Good morning! Maryann from PA. Q6 Challenge is to make the changes needed to keep schools modern & relevant to learners.
A6/ for me, balancing demands of board w/ needs of school -feel like they don't always align. Students 1st! https://t.co/AA5sMskMTU

I just opened up my Twitter and is on a roll already!! Loving the conversation https://t.co/qrhdbBe08n
A1: "The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate." - . EXACTLY!
A6 so hard to be a manager and a leader --- I could spend all day every day dealing with small issues - but it can b done!
relationships are about achieving Ss learning not warm and fuzzy
A6 I think restructuring roles, supports, resources would result in more dollars for good leadership/schools.
- This is amazing!!! Great share!!! so many ways to use this to set a course or to reflect on our work!
A6: knowing that challenges exist, the world has changed, students' learning needs have changed & adapting to them in a 21st way

A6: Yes! As important that staff don't give in to the overwhelming belief that environment dictates hope. https://t.co/UUsXp5EEAx
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
A6 higher decision made by ppl who know nothing about the art of education
A6 Dealing with initiatives that are not S focused and take away the time that could be spent engaging learners
Though I know some schools are simply underfunded.
A6. Another challenge 4 school leaders is the ever changing landscape of instruction, assessment, tech tools. Difficult 2 catch up
A6: It's never easy to make everyone happy, but everyone needs to understand the reasoning.
I had that experience in my school with awesome leader leader Margaret MacLean from here in VT https://t.co/YJP4RvYdjY
A4 asked tchers what do you want to learn and they pursued different paths together or individually to pursue that
A6 Given leaders have joy, compassion, model shared learning + vision + have engaged presence, greatest challenge is time for all
Some schools (don't know how they figured it out budget-wise), now have SAMs (school administrative managers). :)
needs 'reason' and 'change champion' as well to really guarantee success
YES!! The students are our "customers" we should always be doing what is best for them! https://t.co/kil84HR232
Greatest challenge facing leaders? Balancing unreasonable mandates/policies while trying to do what is in the best interest of kids
A6: Creating schools where ALL As, Ts, & Ss value & implement choice & voice effectively to improve student learning.
Honesty, authenticity, and focus on kids helps reframe other people's "side". We do not work in a binary business.
A6: Being the bridge between what should happen, & what does-Helping Ts with the change while being a part of it, bridging the gap
Agreed! So many challenges for leaders today Standardized test scores, grades, media, budgets... https://t.co/sl2XnkBkQT
Question 6 and it's a tough one!
https://t.co/nWq9i3LU8b

Agreed! It takes great courage for a leader to not let that system block our pursuit of true excellence https://t.co/i8awPXuhqb
I dont think it has to Andrew! How mandates & policies play out in our schools is up to us!
lots of variability w/regard to this, that's why it's important for T's and Leaders to connect outside of district.
I don't think it was on many Ts radar when I was in school either. https://t.co/8c5jez0yAO
I wish my Ts had helped me develop my passions early on https://t.co/MsKglDLQ5f
A5) Allowing teachers to discover and share their passions is rarely a bad thing. Just think of the learning that could take place
A6) The breakroom talk or neg. Ts who don't want to change, or want their idea (only theirs) to move forward as policy
A6: building and keeping synergy. The school year can be long...how do we keep everyone encouraged? Positive? Open-minded?
A6 Greatest challenge is lack of vision re what is possible.
Need edcamp & other PD to help all Ts&Admins re-energize &revisualize
A6: They can't be afraid to let their staff & Ss take risks with strategies & tools. We must prepare Ss for the jobs of tomorrow.
district staff spending year visiting homes 2 interview families abt sch as part of human-centered design
Great chat this morning about traits of great leaders & our focus group named the same traits!
Yeah, but it’s only trending in the U.S.
. these kids will definitely get their parents involved. It has created a buzz in school. https://t.co/X5fB7G0pXR
Terrific idea! Providing Ps with a menu of "how to" have your Ss have a successful, engaging summer w/o summer slack
A6 Be careful of answers that imply control and compliance! We won't transform education top/down.
You've just made everyone a little bit taller!!! Thanks.
A5: Admins are perfect- changing culture and lives is hard work- you gotta try hard everyday https://t.co/SvRHpDrVEp

A6: Collectively binging people together while giving them autonomy.
A6: ‘Balance’...many things to keep moving. Leaders must develop & support leaders. Keep plates spinning! https://t.co/EWJNFImJ5z
And conservative approaches to what constitutes learning
thats awesome man! I am sure it is going to be great!
Well said. This is a must and has to be the districts mindset. Won't be easy, but it is our mission. https://t.co/iUc8CTYanx
A6. Meeting the needs of ALL learners. A challenge that we have to strive for, and is incredibly hard to meet well.
I really like this idea, Fred! Shifting the lang can help shift the mindsets, too, & create more ownership https://t.co/Y8sO9wPksG
I'm a fan of a newer term: "Build In." We are always more invested when we make something, rather than buy it!
A6 The greatest challenge facing schoolleaders today is to make learning possible. For students, teachers and the structure.
A6. Great as in awesome or great as in ginormous?

Mic drop quote of https://t.co/NKMN4utYJd
A6: Ensuring that students are not victims of their environment, but rather contributors and agents of change
the balance between empowering, envisioning, and ... paperwork!
When T's are empowered, they empower their Ss. When T's are disempowered, it trickles down.
Which is why all learners need their own personalized learning plans!
culture and environment should be at the heart of education
really makes a difference when we have agency over our learning - adults and young people
A2 have conversations, get 2 know Ts, Ss & P's. B present at PLCs and use coaching hat. Seek input! https://t.co/3eY4xo80vH
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
And this is why I love coming here to learn... other like minded ppl who seek that excellence.
Agreed! Of course, I ALWAYS agree with Todd. It's worked out okay so far. :-) https://t.co/G5Q60F5mxi
I don't want to 'hack' into the discussion, but this may be the most awesome group of people ever engaged in !
A6: A govt. whose vision & mandates 4 ed. changes w each election. THINK: If you could CREATE a school, would it look like yours?
Best way to make sure students do not act like school year is over is to make sure teachers do not act like school year is over.
A6: Effective ways to measure Ss and Ts achievement, to build school unity and keep quality teachers in Ed.
Time for that am coffee. Absolutely love these chats. Can't get enough.
A6: No idea, but I'll guess: this whole SLO deal and the fact that graduation rates need to be high. Just high, anyway it can.
Right. But what a great overarching goal to strive for!
A6 Huge challenge is keeping our learners at center of every decision/choice/initiative/"Improvement" we make-Hard to stay on track
A6: Lack of equity. Not all Ss have the same learning experience which is sad. All Ss should have successful learning experiences

Resisting comparison is hard! Totally agree with you. When you are honest & acknowledge that weakness it is powerful.
A6 Making student agency, curiosity & a love of learning central school aims

A6: overcoming teachers' knowing/doing gap...their practices do not always match what they know should be happening, best for kids
Great chat today. Thanks everyone. Happy Mothers Day!
A6 uncertainty about gov't policy and funding. We're about to have an election in aust where everything could change.
A6: Ts that aren't willing to go outside their box to benefit Ss. When they say, "I've always done it this way."
They are 1 of many in the school community.
An earlier question related to student or learner centered classrooms. If this is your goal get a hold of . 1/2
A6 Yes and moving towards "progression" rather than rating--seeing all Ss as growing in multiple ways, valuing that.
A5: If Ts are required to get a min # of hrs, allow them to get them in a manner that's meaningful to THEM. https://t.co/ObSWxZmjqn
yes finding the creativity within the constraints!
Build it into the School day or the PD schedule. Have specific times to share their ideas.
A6 Greatest battle is encouraging great teachers who work hard and love kids but who are being beaten down by NC politics

I agree that teacher retention is an issue. Discipline issues and added pressures make it harder to keep teachers.
Getting rid of the standards & books - then teaching to the passions can do wonders as well :-)
