Hi! I'm Kylie, joining you from Wisconsin! I am currently studying Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. I am so excited to be joining you tonight! #engagechat
Hi, @daviswelcome and #engagechat. Rebecca from Nevada ~ Spring is springing and the flowers in the garden here at the house are popping out of the ground. (Not quite like this GIF, yet. )
A1: To hope is to know in your soul that there is a chance for something better, for positive change, for wholeness, goodness, and fulfillment of whatever you are searching for #engagechat
A1: Hope is believing in something. Believing something greater is there. That what is in front of you is the now - but can always be changed to more. #engagechat
A1 hope is thinking positively even in times of challenges and struggle, keeping a mindset that things could change, work out, and having hope means not giving up #engagechat
Q1: To me, hope means seeing/holding to something/believing something that is much greater than the smaller circumstance/incidents that swirl around us on a daily basis. #engagechat
A1: “A word which has its origins in the smile of a newborn child, and in the spark of a newborn mind which has the power to change a generation” @BacktoBlessedhttps://t.co/8IdmhfRuaV#EngageChat
A1 hope is thinking positively even in times of challenges and struggle, keeping a mindset that things could change, work out, and having hope means not giving up #engagechat
#engagechat An understanding with the universe that you feel deeply- an energy that guides you to keep going, a belief that a synergy will occur and things will get better- things will work out if you keep moving forward
Even in the face of darkness, naysayers and non-believers, you soldier on because you feel that it so strongly that you know you can't give up even when everyone else is saying you should #engagechat

Gary from Illinois, former Supt, now trying to provide hope to teachers w/ the integration of character & values. H.O.P.E. - Hang On Pain Ends #engagechat
#engagechat An understanding with the universe that you feel deeply- an energy that guides you to keep going, a belief that a synergy will occur and things will get better- things will work out if you keep moving forward
A1: In Macbeth, one of the hired murderers says, “I am one whom the vile blows and buffets of the world have so incensed that I am reckless...” Hope is never getting near this nadir and being aware of a student who is trending downward #engagechat
Happy Friday #EngageChat! Akilah, from VA. Professional Learning Specialist. I believe in #hope-it floats & its a bridge to joy and dreams. #VBHasJoy🌻A1-Hope is responsive & armor for life's challenges
A2: You show that you don't give up even in the face of everything going wrong. You also show that you are willing to go against the grain even when others think your ideas are crazy :) #engagechat
A2: You show that you don't give up even in the face of everything going wrong. You also show that you are willing to go against the grain even when others think your ideas are crazy :) #engagechat
A2 Important that Ts never give up on something, you may change approach or methods, but giving up is never an option We can create hope with our attitude #engagechat
A2 just staying positive, smiling, trying to shift negative thoughts to an up side, sometimes it requires sharing a personal story or some other exper, #engagechat
A2 By trying to stay positive even when things are not going well. Keeping the eye on the larger pictures and trying to not sweat the smaller stuff. Not always easy though. #engagechat
A2. Keep the 'Pollyanna'/ 'Peter Pan' inside you strong even when faced with negative people or situations. Don't let then dull your sparkle. #engagechat
#engagechat Starting late! Matt from Utah - A1 - Hope is being able to see tomorrow and the possibilities that may exist there. It takes a lot of effort sometimes to see it there but it exists.
A2 Important that Ts never give up on something, you may change approach or methods, but giving up is never an option We can create hope with our attitude #engagechat
A2 I always try to see the positive, I share the challenges and my thought process with my students and personal children as I hold onto hope even when it stretches me. #EngageChat
A2: I think it's important to show that even you mess up sometimes but you still try again each day. Students need to know that even you, as a teacher, are not perfect. Model that you never give up. #engagechat
Yes my friend! Be unafraid to take risks and be the crazy one! Stay true to the course even if you could fall on your face and be laughed at. Others take hope in your hope #engagechat
A2: Sharing by words & actions that even though I can’t always control the situation, I can control how I choose to look at it and respond. #engagechat
#engagechat A hopeful spirit comes from an open-mind & positive outlook. My mantra CPMRLT I say it aloud throughout the day and it’s written all over my room. Calm, patient, mindful, respond not react, learn something new today, think before I speak.
A2: I try to model a hopeful spirit by avoiding negativity...by maintaining a CAN DO mindset & empowering faculty, staff & students to take risks. Just this week empowered students to lead a rally to say #enough to senseless violence & kickoff a kindness campaign! #engagechat
A2: I have found that when I am losing hope, if I pull my thoughts up into the positive side of things that I am more hopeful. In the classroom I do that through offering positive affirmations to pull Ss back to the positive side of things. #engagechat
Hope is that feeling you get when things seem impossibly dark or fruitless but a spark of something is burning inside you spurring you on. It whispers, “Keep going!” #engagechat
#engagechat A2 quit the negativity in what you say or do. Remain optimistic and cheerful of heart despite and in spite of everything. Refuse to be defeated.
#engagechat A2 - Being able to see that there is hope in low moments and that there are ways to build from failures in life. I make mistakes in my classroom and automatically own them. Students laugh at me but we move on and hopefully they understand why I move on and continue.
A2: I think it's important to show that even you mess up sometimes but you still try again each day. Students need to know that even you, as a teacher, are not perfect. Model that you never give up. #engagechat
A2) Model hope through ur work ethic! Continue to push thru and and put your best foot forward no matter how dim it may seem. One example is continuously putting proper instruction and interventions for students that have historically struggled. #engagechat
A2: Sharing by words & actions that even though I can’t always control the situation, I can control how I choose to look at it and respond. #engagechat
A2: By keeping your mindset on what you want. Don’t let the world change your smile or attitude. Show others what they can be capable of by your actions. #engagechat

Hope is that feeling you get when things seem impossibly dark or fruitless but a spark of something is burning inside you spurring you on. It whispers, “Keep going!” #engagechat
A2: By being actually hopeful... Kids has amazing BS meters... They'll just give you that look and be like: "You don't really want that... Do you?" #Engagechat
I think it's important to bury my face in my hands, slide down in my chair, and make a big deal until it becomes just another moment of fun. The S who calls out my error gets a shout-out email home. #engagechat
I remember being in 9th grade and the students needling the teacher! Your positive attitude really comes out here, so it must in your classroom. #EngageChat
Remind students of all the things they can now do because they stuck with it & inspire there
confidence that no matter how complicated or difficult a new assignment is they can handle it if
they apply themselves. #engagechat
#engagechat A3 - Being supportive in their process, but then also being honest to a point. Students want feedback and support throughout the educational process and if they have those two things then confidence may follow.
A3: By allowing Ss to follow through on their dreams by taking action on them and find fulfillment. When they accomplish them, they become more confident in their abilities and bolder in their choices. #engagechat
A1: It's that feeling in you gut or the twinkle in your brain that gives you confidence that though things aren't going well, they're going to improve at some point, even though you may not know when that is ... #engagechat
A3: Research suggests that students who are high in hope have greater academic success, stronger friendships, and demonstrate more creativity – all of which contribute to greater self-worth and confidence. #EngageChat
A3 Having hope builds confidence. When a teacher has hope for the students they in turn can begin to feel hope themselves and with that comes confidence. #engagechat
A3 Hope can build it because, by helping them learn how to see the hope in a situation will help them learn to never give up on themselves. #EngageChat
A3: I’m amazed at how much positive feedback and encouragement breeds confidence in students. And, I don’t mean BS—I mean sincere, honest feedback that’s meant to help the student move forward. That type of engagement is so, so palpable to students & their confidence #engagechat
#engagechat Hope rebounds you from failure, it is the light that guides you to shore after a bumpy ride. When students are surrounded and supported with encouragement and hope they feel free to take risks and try new things. Build a strong foundation of determination= growth
A student who has hope and believes in themselves allows a student to be confidant in everything that they do. Students who struggle to be confidant in themselves don't have that hope instilled in them. We need to build that confidence as educators #engagechat
Thank you so much for the warm compliment. Honestly I look at my classroom as their classroom. I need to accommodate their needs and be as warm as possible when I work with them. This fosters positivity and engagements for most of my students. #engagechat

#engagechat A3 when we inspire hope in our Ss, we are telling them they can succeed if they don't give up, with one more try , one more day, one more time.
A3. Watch an educator glance at a student and then smile - their hearts are filled with the words below about the child they see that is unique, special and they know their job is to fill them with .... possibilities! #engagechat
A3: Kids know that you're the content expert... So if you believe theyre going to be fine and can show them this using their work, then perhaps you might convince them... #engagechat
A shout out email! That is an amazing idea. I usually reward students with candy for pointing out my grammatical/spelling errors in class. I teach English so it is an easy thing to reward them for finding. #engagechat
I had 10 year-olds once who wrote a quote that I've kept ever since - "We are all teachers and we are all learners in our learning environments." We learn alongside our students. #engagechat
Hope is the voice in your head- keep going, see the rope, climb the rope, reach the summit. You can do it. Believe and feel it. When students hear this voice- they trust & see their success - teachers are that voice incarnate #engagechat
A3 Ss may feel like cannot improve , or feel hopeless in learning something new, having hope and encouraging them can build their confidence, learning that helps to keep moving fwd #engagechat
Hope and self confidence not only relegated to our Sts. Many time colleagues hold back because... If we see it as adults, our job then becomes to make sure our Sts understand we care about them.
#engagechat

A3: Hope will build student confidence because students will continue to work hard until they have succeeded, gaining more confidence each time. Don't forget to encourage them along the way, everyone needs encouragement every once in awhile! #engagechat
https://t.co/wS3tWBNH8T my school STEAM Room there is no wrong way.Its collaborative learning often pupil led.Pupil led learning gives everyone confidence and self belief #engagechat
A3. A couple of ideas for Ts: Give students the opportunity to choose what they learn. Try not to correct every single thing the student says wrong. For Ss: develop their growth mindset! #engagechat
I understand that. I have been toying with the idea of making a public @flipgrid for parents for me to send messages out quickly and in an engaging matter. That way they hear my intonation in the video rather than maybe losing it in an email. #engagechat
Sometimes I have them look for the little charge of Dopamine when they figure something out. The harder they work to get it, the bigger the celebration. #engagechat
A3: Every student deserves a teacher who not only hopes they can be successful but knows they can! Sometimes that is all they need to have the confidence to keep on pushing through the really tough spots. #engagechat
A3: More often than not students will rise to our expectations. Do we convey hopeful expectations?
Does our message & our actions consistently convey:
1. That what they do is important!
2. That they CAN DO it!
3. That we won’t give up on them! #engagechat
@shakeuplearning talks about it in her new book about hammering that point home how failure is not the end. We really need to get that point through to Ss and help them find hope in those stumbling points. #engagechat#ShakeUpLearning

A3) Perhaps it's faith, but you build student confidence by believing in them -- that they can do this. By never, ever succumbing to judgment and stereotypes. #EngageChat
A4: Lack of confidence from peers, adults, or a bad experience. Being brought down once as a student can cause you to lose hope in yourself #engagechat
Thanks Matthew. They made a few posters of this back in 2011. It's such a powerful reminder and I've shared it a lot since then. Very proud of them. #engagechat
Yes, and my observations certainly support that. I sometimes work with Ss w/zero confidence & that needs to be developed before they accomplish much else. #engagechat
A4: Fixed mindset can crush students and, well, all people. So, fixed mindsets and those who are not cognizant of what that means can be damaging to hope #engagechat
A4: When Ts show that they have lost confidence in Ss abilites and throw hands up in air..."well that's it, stop trying..you're done..no more." You've now shut them done because you've given up on them. And they've given up on themselves! #engagechat
A4: Lack of confidence from peers, adults, or a bad experience. Being brought down once as a student can cause you to lose hope in yourself #engagechat
#engagechat When our voice is silenced, our character is shaded, our presence belittled or ignored we feel silenced and wavering like a kite caught in a tree. Once floating free becomes entanglement. As humans we need to belong, feel loved, connected and when we don’t we falter.
A3) Perhaps it's faith, but you build student confidence by believing in them -- that they can do this. By never, ever succumbing to judgment and stereotypes. #EngageChat
#engagechat A4 - I was just talking to @qhenderson about how not answering student questions quickly or working with them on an off topic issue may create a loss of intellectual curiosity. As Intellectual curiosity is a key component of my hope as a human being, I find it sad.
A4: Hope lost... I don't think hope is ever lost; instead, I think sometimes a bunch of stuff gets piled on top of it, & it is difficult to see. The choice then is to remove the stuff off of hope so hope can be seen again or leave the stuff. Seeing hope is a choice. #engagechat
Thanks! In my opinion, people need to stop viewing failure as an end point and see it just as a stumbling block. When we stumble what do we do? Get the heck back up, dust off, and move on! #engagechat
A3: Hope I believe helps Ss persevere and never give up! I have Ss reflect on their learning. When they see how far they have come and how much they have grown, their confidence soars! #engagechat
A4: Verbal or physical abuse. Loss of a support system. Repetitive feeling of failure. 😢 #engagechat Actions/events/situations that create a sense of hopelessness.
Thank you very much for sharing this with me. I think we are both at points in our lives where we do lean back and wonder. Yes, you're right ...... #engagechat
A4) False hope is a negative. Many times as teachers and building leaders we think that we are helping but we are doing more harm. Many times being realistic is not the most popular thing to do. #engagechat

A4 When a conversation starts with a positive comment and then it goes to “but” the expression in kids/adults faces lets us know they’ve have been a little crushed. So working on conjunction “AND” as a better option to guide #growthmindset#engagechat
I'd be interested in @flipgrid but the constant marketing...ugh...a real turn-off. I just keep thinking if it's that good, word of mouth should do it. #engagechat
A4: when the teacher gives up on a student... The student then feels justified to give up on themselves... We wield a lot of power when you think about it... #engagechat
A4: Public shaming & blaming, repeatedly saying no to new ideas or replying, “we have never done it that way before” all behaviors that lead to hopelessness! #engagechat
A4: Showing disappointment in students, lack of encouragement and confidence in students... if they know you don't believe in them, it will be nearly impossible for them to believe in themselves. #engagechat
A4 #engagechat Hope is warm and sweet like a cool breeze. When sudden change, stress, uncertainty takes ahold of the circulation we feel stifled. The only way to breathe clear and fresh air is to build relationships and stay positive. Hope is rekindled with family & friendship.
Absolutely!! Whenever all of the political stuff about teaching starts getting me down, I pull this up to remind myself that it's about the kids! #engagechat
In reply to
@cossie29, @rossathibault, @DartmouthHS
A3: when a student has hope, he or she will not give up. When they don't give up, they will gain confidence to make mistakes and learn from them. #engagechat
A4: when the teacher gives up on a student... The student then feels justified to give up on themselves... We wield a lot of power when you think about it... #engagechat
#EngageChat A4 When we disengage from Ss we are showing them we don't believe in them anymore. Sometimes it's not what we say or do that make Ss lose hope. It's what we don't do or say.
A4: Public shaming & blaming, repeatedly saying no to new ideas or replying, “we have never done it that way before” all behaviors that lead to hopelessness! #engagechat
A4: Traumatic events like the recent school shootings… making it all the more impressive that our young people are turning a situation of despair into one of hope and action. #MarchForOurLives#EngageChat
A4 #engagechat Hope is warm and sweet like a cool breeze. When sudden change, stress, uncertainty takes ahold of the circulation we feel stifled. The only way to breathe clear and fresh air is to build relationships and stay positive. Hope is rekindled with family & friendship.
I just realized a few months ago how tracking prevents Ss from ever catching up and how low-floor high ceiling tasks eliminate the need for tracking. #engagechat
And that's not only a hope crusher, that person can become potentially suicidal and/or dangerous, going down a dark path..all because we blew it! #engagechat
I agree...hope has to be realistic and honest feedback is important but recognizing that tone & word choice when providing that feedback is important. Fine line between constructive & cutting! #engagechat
Constant failure without understanding that it can still lead to failure, constant modeling of fixed mindset or verbal attack, not having anyone to build up their esteem or help guide them to a growth mindset. #EngageChat
When that's all a Ts does instead of concentrating on Ss learning, you bet it becomes discouraging for Ss. I would be, too, if I were them. Frustrated as well. #engagechat
A5. Harness the power of the most positive and hopeful staff members and keep encouraging them by acknowledging their attitudes and finding ways for them to be leaders in the school. #engagechat
It's natural to keep your feet planted in adulthood. As a parent I suddenly stop myself and realize, I'm not being as patient I would have needed to be with myself at that age. #EngageChat
People are resilient. We are built to soldier on. It feels though sometimes we are on our own and the world is against us. You break the cycle by helping others and resetting your mindset with meditation, prayer and faith. Hope is the foundation. #engagechat
#engagechat A5 - Listening. I feel uplifted when I am listened to by my admin and other teachers. I know other people appreciate it when I listen and engage. It makes all the difference and we need more of it in our world.
Relationships, Relationships, Relationships! A good leader is one who builds relationships with Ss and Ts and encourages them to do things they would never do all in positive ways! #engagechat
A5: Productive and positive PD, encourage staff to think outside the box and take risks, support staff when they want to get crazy, when they stumble, and just be there for them #engagechat
A5. Don't shut down the positivity and hopefulness by negative comments, e.g. 'Why are you always so positive?' Counterproductive and not effective leadership. #engagechat
A5. Harness the power of the most positive and hopeful staff members and keep encouraging them by acknowledging their attitudes and finding ways for them to be leaders in the school. #engagechat
A5: A leadership action that encourages/uplifts staff is finding ways to roll up their sleeves and be in the thick of it with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. #engagechat
A5 Transparency: Leaders who can show their errors & build upon them model the same tenacity in those who they lead Get real! Everyone makes mistakes & can overcome them #engagechat
A5: Setting clear and attainable goals, having multiple approaches to achieving them, and being a cheerleader/keeping the staff motivated toward reaching the goals, especially when the going gets tough. #EngageChat
A5: Everyone needs to be informed in a timely manner... Timely and relevant feedback, and not just the bad things... We NEED TO KNOW WHAT WE DO WELL SO WE KEEP DOING THAT STUFF... #engagechat
I agree...hope has to be realistic and honest feedback is important but recognizing that tone & word choice when providing that feedback is important. Fine line between constructive & cutting! #engagechat
#engagechat A5 - Listening. I feel uplifted when I am listened to by my admin and other teachers. I know other people appreciate it when I listen and engage. It makes all the difference and we need more of it in our world.
so true..... as a parent i find myself living in that dissonance then reminding myself to be the grownup / dad they need me to be .... but i EXPLAIN it better than my dad / principal did -- i'm willing to talk abt it #engagechat
Relationships, Relationships, Relationships! A good leader is one who builds relationships with Ss and Ts and encourages them to do things they would never do all in positive ways! #engagechat
A5 When you show your staff you care and that you are invested in them...you will see that your positive actions will yield positive results! #engagechat
A5: We had a "Countdown to Spring Break" 1) Jeans all week. 2) I "Donut" know what I'd do without staff like you. 3) Coffee, hot choc. and Chai tea 4) pizza for lunch. Today was district PD, so we were all spread far and wide. #engagechat
A5: Productive and positive PD, encourage staff to think outside the box and take risks, support staff when they want to get crazy, when they stumble, and just be there for them #engagechat
A5... There also needs to be clear actionable goals, and help provided for those that struggle to reach them... You know like the stuff we're supposed to be doing for kids... #engagechat
#engagechat Trust and belief. Listening and smiling. Encouragement and support. Most of all, being a part of a community, building a positive culture and participating in the flow- being present and patient.
A5 Get to know your staff, help them build in both strengths and weaknesses, find ways to support instead of things that are "wrong", listen and make sure they know that you believe in them by your actions. If you have to keep saying it, your staff doesn't feel it. #EngageChat
A5 build relationships. Listen with open mind and think how you’d feel in a situation where you’re valued (not ignored or belittled) Maybe a little of do unto others.... #engagechat
A5: Building a culture where it is OK to take risks & to fail in the pursuit of progress! Building staff back up after they’ve fallen down is important. #engagechat
A5: A leadership action that encourages/uplifts staff is finding ways to roll up their sleeves and be in the thick of it with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. #engagechat
A5: Setting clear and attainable goals, having multiple approaches to achieving them, and being a cheerleader/keeping the staff motivated toward reaching the goals, especially when the going gets tough. #EngageChat
A5: Staff also needs time to create cool stuff for schools, that needs to be built in intentionally into daily, weekly, and monthly schedules... #engagechat
#engagechat A5 Praise and encourage staff publicly. Admonish privately. To show staff you believe in them, encourage them to speak up without fear of any reprisal. Hope uplifts their spirit. Never dampen their spirit.
You never know where that tangent could lead and you should try and answer those questions. There is a time an a place, but tangents are awesome. #engagechat
WOW! Clearly you love your job. ;) AND... students can see that. Which means that they also can see it when teachers don't. They're lucky and so are you. #EngageChat
Sometimes I set totally unrealistic goals, but celebrate if we get halfway. It can be a lot of fun struggling together knowing it's all okay. #engagechat
A5: What an important question! #engagechat I think the most important action a leader can take to uplift others is to say “thank you...I appreciate you...you matter”. Sometimes we forget the simple act of saying thank you is a very powerful thing!
A great leader does not take charge or give definitive directions- they have a map to guide everyone to their own destination- they spread hope by standing in place and letting those around them hear their internal voice - they leave the direction to individuality #engagechat
A5) Taking part in what our staff members do if it is jumping into small groups, helping custodians out with cafeteria duties from time to time, being involved lets people know you respect and admire what they do. Everyone is important to the success! #engagechat
Sometimes I set totally unrealistic goals, but celebrate if we get halfway. It can be a lot of fun struggling together knowing it's all okay. #engagechat
