Hey Now #ATchat Welcome to our last chat of 2017. Looking forward to an action packed hour where YOU lead the convo! Tell us who you are and what your plans are for the holiday break
Well I can pitch a question. I’ve really been looking into good ways to help T’s use UDL as a framework for planning lessons and focus less on just trying to use latest tech w/out the structure. What approaches and resources do you guys try. #atchat
Know it’s #atchat not UDL but doing a lot of training in JAN for both, and noticing for myself that AT in special settings sometimes is easier to integrate than in regular setting without UDL principles
We use itslearning for our LMS. Does anyone else use it? I’d love to brainstorm and learn how others are designing their digital content in ITSL to support access #ATChat
I've definitely seen that. I wouldn't necessarily say that the specialized settings are using UDL (though some absolutely are) but I do think they're more used to being flexible & see the overall benefits as well. #ATchat
I agree. We see this as well. How do districts ensure their teachers design content with digital access and UDL in mind? I also am curious about if your district is using a LMS.. if so, what? #ATChat
Working with a lot of classrooms where SWD need keyboarding or speech to text. Student has AT people have training but lessons relie heavily on paper based materials in PDF format and teachers have low tech skills. So Struggling to retrofit lessons instead #atchat
My big project over the next couple weeks is to get the spring semester AAC class syllabus finalized. I've spoken to the local OT school & we plan to have a joint class. Ideas of activities they could do together? (2nd year SLP grad students/1st year OT grad students) #ATchat
Such a great opportunity! How about working in teams to work w/consumer. Work on vocab, programming & access. Each person can experience the other discipline #ATchat
More for credentials than anything else. Wish it was more streamlined for people like myself who work in a mainly high incidence populations in public schools. #ATchat
That's the long term goal, likely through a clinic class or grant. This, however, is stealing 1 3-hour class period in April as that's literally the only time the availability aligns. (Logistics between 2 universities are a nightmare!) #ATchat
Future opportunities...validation and in my district assistance in some litigation situations & for me, as a part of my professional goals, in learning and growing it seems like a good next step... with an OT background I don’t NEED it to work but I WANT to always push for more.
I want it mainly for credentials as well. I’m MA in History with years exp as sped in public schools before AT. But I think the history degree helped me be a good learner and researcher and impacts my job. Ability to learn and adapt important as what you currently know #atchat
Understood! How about a smaller version of that activity? Working in mixed groups on case study. Must work on two: one communication & one access. Each person gets a chance to show their expertise and then chance to learn something new #ATchat
And i think we have to drive the convo abt how at is integrated into k-12 cert. Daniel mentioned FL in those qiat emails....we’ve worked hard at defining AT competencies for IEP teams and for AT Specialists.... I wanna make that digestible.
Hmm... that could work as long as we had the access lecture 1st! (These OT students have spent a few months in a cadaver lab but don't much more as yet- SLP students 1-3 months from graduation.) It would highlight the importance of access, though #ATchat
I will be attending ATIA and have signed up for the RESNA K-12 focus group (No worries @mmatp I'll still be at Edcamp too). I want to hear what they have to say regarding this group and would love to provide input as to how it applies directly to my job #ATchat
