#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
Educators and parents both understand that standardized testing is pretty much useless, so they don't put pressure on their kids to do really well on them. #edchat
It depends on the state, district & school leadership. Today, fewer teacher evaluations r directly tied to the tests, so that helps. But the emphasis on the tests still narrows the curriculum, and indirectly "implies" that some subjects are more important than others. #edchat
This is an interesting fact! Standardized tests are not important to the student other than the results at their school impact school funding, which is something students shouldn't have to worry about. #edchat
Ironically, I think some of the backlash has settled because we've learned the past 2 yrs, with our national crisis of leadership, that untested subjects, like civics and history, are just as important as the high stakes tested subjects. #edchat
A1- I teach HS. I am not aware of anyone in my school who uses class time to explicitly teach 'how to take this test', but we do use class time to complete the demographics sections of the test. #edchat

For teachers coping with adverse childhood experiences or other traumas, common classroom situations can trigger strong reactions. Teaching With Trauma: https://t.co/i359IU00YG. #EdChat
High stakes tests lead to more direct instruction, not less, so if a goal of the tests was to add higher standards & creativity to teaching & learning, that goal has not been achieved. Teachers realize this dilemma, & of course feel the pressure to teach to the tests. #edchat
Before I taught army current job, I was at a MS that was on monitor...basically, hit this benchmark or the state is coming in.
Such a better place where I am now...no pressures at all.
#edchat
That makes sense...to be fair, my school system is routinely ranked in the top 3 in the state in just about every academic category...maybe that's why I don't experience the pressures.

Good point, but the politicians often pressure states 2 test 2 measure "progress." Educators have to convince those in power, & parents, that high stakes tests narrow the curr. & minimize creativity. The Finnish model can b used 2 support innovation over standardization. #edchat

I wonder how much longer we will need to endure standardized testing before the folly of it all is discovered and recognized by reasonable politicians? #Edchat
Sadly, I think standardized testing has become such a routine part of high school for a lot of students/families. Some people don't think change is possible so they are willing to simply accept the fact. #edchat
It's so ironic that many who initially supported CCSS and high states tests, reversed course. Some for political reasons, and others because they saw little progress (e.g. NCLB and RTTT). Is it the pendulum? Do we just go back and forth with ed ideas? Hmmm? #edchat
2 of 2. Still too much focus on testing & prepping for testing. I tell tchrs “because it’s on the test” is never a good reason for why something needs to be learned. #edchat

Maybe we need to pressure colleges to do a deeper dive into standardized testing for benefits and pitfalls. The myths of testing to better prepare future teachers. #Edchat
Still, it is the most common phrase we hear as parents " because it's on the test!". But I think teachers are also helpless since it is what the system forces.#edchat
I don't blame families. Parents usually r not experts on ed. issues, they r depending on educators. Since the standardized tests r part of the landscape most parents (& new teachers) believe in the system that has instituted these initiatives. They trust the educators. #edchat

#Edchat Topic: How has the backlash to high stakes standardized testing settled down amongst educators and parents? Now under discussion. Follow hashtag!
We’re seeing this, too, but sometimes the objection isn’t to the test but the info gleaned from the respondents. We have a group that believes the test are an Islamic plot. #edchat
I wore black today for #TransDayOfRemembrance to show support for the non-binary students I work with. My classroom door got a new sticker today so students know that I see them and I will work to help make our school a safe place. #onpoli#edchat#transrightsarehumanrights
I think state education agencies need to be part of that conversation. It will take courage for state leaders to recognize/admit that high stakes tests often narrow the curriculum and send a negative message about which subjects are important. #edchat

Again, let's nt get caught in an either/or trap. Some testing is helpful if the assessments can b used 2 improve teaching & learning. One of the problems with standardized tests is that results often arrive after students have moved on, or the data is not specific enough. #edchat

Fondly pulled out my high school French-English dictionary for my son to use on some homework tonight. And after taking minutes to flip through pages & scroll to find few words, quietly put the dictionary back... #dopeoplestillusethesethings#googletranslateforthewin#edchat
#Edchat Most educators and parents have already seen that it's disadvantages as much as benefits. However, when universities and colleges still consider the results of these standardized tests, they cannot avoid putting pressure on students.
I never object to proper assessment, but that is not necessarily what a standardized test is. Formative & summative assessments for a class welcomed. #Edchat
Great point. One of the early mistakes of the CCSS approach was linking the curr. to the tests. As a results many teachers, admin, parents could not separate the curr. from the tests. When the science standards (NGSS) came out leaders said, "Don't test" for a while. #edchat
I've always liked CCSS - I think many of the standards define valuable skills to be learned. But, I've always hated the tests. I don't think it's a full pendulum swing, as much innovative instruction (e.g. PBL) can effectively be guided by CCSS.
5th graders at Creeds Elementary became partners in a year-long project to drive local traffic to the museum. What did they bring to the table that museum professionals didn’t think of? https://t.co/3wtQ2g8zZK#education#edchat
Late jumping in! IMO although they should not be the entire measure of a successful school, there is value in standardized testing. Agree- formative/summarize assessments provide great value. Agree- tests results come take too long to get back. #edchat
Thanks #edchat folks 4 raising this issue. The effects of standardized tests must not be swept under the rug. Principals r in a tough position: they receive testing pressure from the district office & state; & teachers get their cues from the admin team. It's complex. #edchat
