The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Morning! ☀️ I had a co-teacher last yr so I collaborated a lot with her. We both taught 1/2 the day, so we wanted a fluid day and routine for Ss. We both learned lots from each other too, explored new learning for Ss. #BFC530
Do you collaborate with colleagues often when lesson planning? When? How do you structure your time?

Co-planning happens 2 times per week, once w/ our coach and once w/ just the 2 of us. We assign lessons and go over them in the following meeting. #bfc530
Yes! When there is a task to be conquered, we work collaboratively as a team, we schedule time to plan together and make it happen because we are all ways better together! #bfc530 😊 👍

Good morning Coffee Crew! Our principal is very traditional middle school and collaborate is what we do! Planning Teams abound 😜. Mandatory weekly planning with ELA team, plus monthly cross-curricular this year. We also get a full day to plan each semester #teamwork#bfc530
We have one teacher per grade PreK-8. I have structured the schedule to allow for grade spans to have common planning time. They use this time to share ideas and plan together. It is a daily routine now. It is important to me for my folks to have this common time together #BFC530
Hey I'm actually up early enough for #bfc530 this morning with nothing else to do. I'm Eric, English and Citizenship tutor for new Americans in Concord, NH
Currently, we are departmentalized and I'm the only math teacher, so collaboration is basically nonexistent within grade level for lesson planning. We spend our time collaborating on how to best handle certain students and issues that are happening with them. #bfc530
Morning #bfc530
My school has a sister HS. We all work for the same BoE. My Business Department has 14+ teachers. We are Required to meet a few times a year to do just that. We also make common exams.

My role as District MTSS Coordinator is all about #collaboration. This year I’ve structured a time to meet with our instructional coaches for a Coaches Community of Practice. We share glows, grows, and goals. We’ve already had other ask to join! #bfc530
Morning!!! I'm so lucky this year to have PLC time built in our schedule for interdisciplinary planning. It's nice to not feel isolated or in a cave anymore #bfc530

We come together as a staff to share every Thursday- some collaboration naturally springs out of that- Ts get excited about ideas of others and want to learn more #bfc530
We have plcs and data teams weekly which gives us a lot of opportunity to collaborate👍🏽. Right now I’m working w the 4th grade teacher on a life science unit. We combined the kids for the kickoff and will intersperse whole group activities and share outs. Such fun! #bfc530
However, I do collaborate with my Twitter PLN to develop lessons and with other math teachers that I know. I'd rather not spend time reinventing the wheel if I don't have to. #bfc530

Since I’m the only computer apps/TV production teacher at my school, I don’t collaborate with other colleagues. However, I do use my PLN, Tweetdeck to follow streams and the Student Television Network to share ideas and learn from others. #bfc530
I will say, finding time is the most difficult part. When I teach, my co is w/ me or off, when he teaches, I am w/ him or off. My own kid pickup interferes with before and after school planning. #bfc530
We seem to be getting the lighter side of it, but it is still going to rain like crazy. 3 counties have already closed for Friday in central VA. #bfc530#FlorenceVA

So now that im an AP I feel the need to consider the system. We need to build common planning time for teachers and we need to hold them accountable for using that time to collaborate. it makes better teachers and students. #bfc530
Collaborating on lesson planning is essential when it comes to the educator team in our Kindergareten classroom. Our team continues to get stronger as a result...as we strive to meet the needs of our students. #bfc530
As a literacy support specialist I collaborate w/ grade level teams & reading specialiss at various schools. I also get to collaborate individually with Ts through coaching cycles. I believe collaboration is critical & that time for it in school should be a top priority. #bfc530
Differentiation for all the students’ needs would be much more difficult if I worked 100% alone. I will miss things- there are just too many needs to work in isolation. #bfc530
Reply: Collaborate early. Mirror SLOs for across all sections for all instructors. Tell the same story early and often for outcomes you can track. #BFC530
Collaborating is more than working on same project ... I do tv production at my school and we go into classrooms and record cool stuff ... teachers providing content material we provide the tech #bfc530
Schools are extremely difficult places to collaborate, by their design. Educators have to pretty much demolish the little red schoolhouse and rebuild if they want meaningful relationships with colleagues and real professional growth #bfc530
We had so many great things we wanted to tell people about education during #bfc530 I decided to pull them all together into one document. https://t.co/WYzdY0QLu8
I collaborate with another Spec Ed teacher who teaches the same type of class I do, but works at another school. We share ideas, resources we’ve found, strategies we’ve tried/want to try. But we do it on our own time - emails, coffee shop meet ups etc. #BFC530#SpecEd
Our district has strong PLC’s and teams collaborate on planning in their content and cross-curriculum planning happens too! It truly is what’s best for kids! Common planning time is built in to every schedule! 😊 #bfc530

Collaboration only happens if we get off our islands ... life is cross curricula collaboration ... therefore learning should be cross curricula collaboration #bfc530
As an admin, we encourage regular collaboration between Ts in PLC's. We also look for any way we can to share great ideas & lessons, between departments as well as ind Ts #bfc530

I’m adjusting to colleagues who email/text regularly at night. I’m dog tired then but I try to engage when functioning so we can be cohesive. It never ends though. #bfc530

I also think that the time that meetings are scheduled makes a big difference. Meetings at the end of the day don't work as well for me as those at the beginning. But also, I'm not a fan of a lot of meetings at the beginning of the school year. #bfc530
For me, eduTwitter is the place I go to share and read other's ideas about practice & methodology. In all my years of teaching, I have never had time for that emphasized but I think is vitally important. #bfc530
Huge believer in collaboration since teachers shouldn’t work in silos. I always discussed and shared lesson ideas with pretty much everyone that was willing to hear them out. Lunch time, prep time, while waiting for copies to be made, they are all perfect sharing time. #bfc530

And those who are responsible for curriculum should seek out opportunities for compensated time to make this happen. If we want colleagues to collaborate, they need time to plan over the summer and common planning time during the school day. #bfc530
If need examples of ho planning teams make all the difference re:support, brainstorming, better practices - holler at me! I can’t imagine having to do this alone! We fire each other up and better each other’s ideas weekly. We teach as individuals, but have team support #BFC530
Sometimes, it depends on the master schedule. I tend to collaborate in the department office with teachers who share my prep period, whether we teach the same grade or not. #bfc530

I also think that G-Suite has made it possible for even more collaboration to occur. Teachers need not be in the same building to collaborate and share ideas that can generate amazing lessons. Let us not forget Twitter either! #bfc530
We encourage #SPRINGERNation to collaborate through departments & PLC we also demo cross curricular dialogue in all staff meetings! Common planning time is also used to help Ts plan 2gether! #BFC530

W/out it being a dog & pony show/ "this is our favored child" moment? That doesn't bode well in a classroom & that's why I'm not a big fan of large group congratulatory stuff. Small group sharing is fun -- our department genius hour sharing at the end of the year +awesome #BFC530
Such a good point! For years i collaborated with teachers on the other side of the country more often than another teacher isolated in a separate cave in my building because of twitter ! #bfc530
Need to build that culture of trust - T to T, T to admin & admin to admin. There can't be "I gotcha's" at any level of the organization.
Without this #Culture celebrating a T's "wins" feels like favoritism & breeds animosity.
#BFC530
Part of that is modeling from admin. Our AP's actually sit in on the PLC meetings of the subjects they supervise. Gives them some skin in the game & shows they support collaboration #bfc530
This is the first year where I'm really getting to plan with my colleagues. 3rd period, everyday all science teachers meet in one room. Its just wonderful. #BFC530

I also find collaboration is a great way to find out what others know & are “experts” on that I can learn from. I learned from others about #GoogleEdu & #Sketchnoting simply by having a conversation w/ a colleague. #BFC530
When it comes to creating engaging, relevant, fun lessons and activities, projects and community involvement for kids-we are all ways better together! Have a wonderful Wednesday friends! 😊 👍 #bfc530
In the past, I’d find time whenever it was convenient to meet in person. Now with document sharing and conferencing apps, collaboration can be done anytime at our convenience without waiting to meet face to face. #bfc530
Absolutely TRUE! I understand that not all schedules can accommodate daily common planning, however, an effort should be made for at least 1 prep period per week for teachers to get together and chat about classroom happenings, etc. #bfc530
I think this is a fine line. I always want to recognize Ts for outstanding work WHILE encouraging the EdCamp model of sharing. It is a balancing act #bfc530
Love the #edcamp idea, Ive also used little slips of paper in mailboxes. Anyone can send one to anyone to tell them theyre doing something awesome! Creates a culture of respect and happiness! #bfc530
Personally, I don’t like to be acknowledged in front of others because it has lead to resentment from colleagues. I do appreciate a note of praise in my mailbox where only I have the power of sharing. Teachers need to be recognized for their efforts. It’s motivating. #bfc530
I don’t find that I have the ability to plan with colleagues at school due to time constraints, but have created a PLN on Twitter that I am in contact with. BUT we are starting a PLN this yr with Admin support at school - I am very excited. #bfc530
If you're waiting for District/Admin to allot you special time to plan for collaboration you might be overthinking it. Talk to your grade level teachers. Maybe what you are really waiting for is a mandate that forces your team to collaborate. #bfc530
The best collaboration is deliberate. When I had a coteacher, our collaboration time was sacred. Without it, our lessons would not have been so impactful. #bfc530
Alright #PLN time for me to start my day. I am excited. #EdcampNewark is 10 days away! Are any of you Jersey folks attending? Have an awesome day! #bfc530

I learned this from one amazing principal. One day, my 2nd graders and I went on a field trip, we brought him back a little tiny pumpkin. He buzzed our room not to thank me but “them”. My kids were overjoyed! I then had a note in my mailbox thanking me. It was so nice. #bfc530
The best collaboration is deliberate. You can’t just throw two teachers in a room and expect miracles. When I had a coteacher in my classroom, our collaboration time was key. Without it, our lessons would not have been so impactful. #bfc530
Good morning everyone. Got a little extra sleep today. No students today bc we have a professional day. Presenting multiple sessions to colleagues on tools to help with accessibility. #bfc530
True, but you cannot change how people like to be praised. I am an introvert and I don’t like public acknowledgement. I am certain I am not the only one. IMO private versus public praise are two different types of motivators. Some of us prefer for it to be private. #BFC530
We have given up a scheduled meeting once a month for Ts to go visit other classes. 10x a year they are able to see their colleagues in action & learn from them. Great feedback from Ts, we are doing it again this year. Idea came from our Ts @KathySm65881510 & @tmanser71#BFC530

A: In the early years our team uses collaboration all the time for planning, we are a team of 3 educators who work together to plan for 15 2-3year olds—we communicate throughout the day with our observations. We are emergent curriculum #emergent#bfc530
We turned our conference room into the “Think Tank”. All core content PLCs have 3 scheduled times to meet in there to collabaorate. To unpack standards, analyze student work, and plan. We have lots of motivation, candy, coffee, and snacks. #bfc530
My colleague and I tend to collaborate over a cup of coffee in the morning. We have the occasional agenda, but normally it’s how our two classes (Sci/Tech, Math/Engineering) can support each other. We figure out where the overlap or support needs are then plan #BFC530
"Never be afraid to ask for help, especially when you have good friends or family who are likely more than willing to help out." -Michelle Stewart #bfc530#quotes@MichelleStewart
Some of my best years teaching were on highly-functioning middle school teams. We were given time to plan, and got to know students and their families so much better. We also carried off interdisciplinary units. #bfc530
