is rocking this morning as we talk Personal Learning with guest moderator
Join the chat... happening NOW!
A1 I see PPL happening every time a teacher digs in on his or her own...which is to say, often.
A1. PPL looks like taking initiative to find * implement new learning. PPL requires reflection to pinpoint what PPL is for you.
A1: PPL looks like individual/groups setting goals & locating resources to meet those goals
A1 Barcamp, Twitter, Webinars, MOOCs: This is what todays personal learning means to me. It is interest driven and fluent.

A1: Personalized PD looks a lot like edcamp. Teacher driven, collaboration, choice.
A1: a T who is connected and willing to publicly fail while trying new things is experiencing personalized learning!
Hello, everyone! Lauren from PA---excited for my first !
A1: it's educators engaged in content that is tailored for them to exactly what they need then the application/modification of it.
A1: It means being a leader. Start a book club. Seek PD that engages you. Think with your feet! And utilize the after-conference!
A1 effective Professional Development can't be a one time event. Must be continuous and relevant
The Flexmod schedule had time built in for collaboration! Ts have more time than just prep time and spend it innovating!

A1. It is different for each. Twitter, FB, Periscope, Skype and even face to face conferences. Learning and growing 100% of time
A1: Personalized professional development is driven by the learner. The what, when, how is designed by the learner. Powerful!!
Complete this analogy:

A1. Personalized learning is ongoing. Finding passions, pushing outside comfort zone to learn new ideas. Focuses on mindset.
Agreed and educators need to the same experience! A dream to spend an hour in genius time!
A1:nobody but u can personalize it better. When u are given a variety of PL opportunities, u personalize it https://t.co/WPfyi15xOx
Q1: What does Personalized Professional Learning look like in practice? How do you know it when you see it?
A1. PPL looks like collaborating w/others, learning from others areas of expertise as you share yours.PPL is about interdependence.
A1 Sometimes it's listening, observing and making changes.
A1 teachers have a choice in what they learn .. It meets their needs any time anywhere any pace
Creativity & STEM without the Arts? Lacks context/substance.
A1: in a VUCA environment we must adapt and be flexible. Our learning must be like this too. Get it from everywhere
Purchased for everyone in district doing multiple book studies love it and all of it's implications for teaching
It's driven by the us. What we want, when we want. Can be done lots of ways. This chat is perfect example! EdCamps too!
A1 Personalized learning should also be celebrated- let the love of learning be contagious.
Stepping out of our comfort zone is really important in order to grow
has done this for me https://t.co/YpTZzZgoDr
A1: I'm all for curiosity- my personal learning journey has taken me places I did not plan, but I'm better for all of it
A1: Based on prof's interest - not dictated; relevant to practice; enjoyment, enhanced by comm of practice
Good morning from Julie in NH but temporarily in Ohio. I'm Ed Tech Integrator at K-6 school.
the excitement and collaboration part is where greatness occurs!
A1: PL is individualized to each and every learner and that's the beauty!
A1: PPD speaks to a need I have to better reach my Ss. Offers options & ideas to help me be better in the classroom tomorrow.
A1: personalized professional learning may not be public but the impact is!
Good morning! I'm Rashida - Division Level Instructional Coach in Fairfax, Va! Sorry I'm late - multitasking with kids
A1: _Personalized_ professional learning is self-directed, filling a teacher's individual needs. Quite different from most PD!
A1: when during PD, Ts given option to participate in their way, break out sessions etc.
Personalized PL allows for choice. The chances of edus actually learning a new skill & putting it in practice are higher.
A1:Personalized Learning should have experiential opportunities to internalize how one creates transformative learning environments
A1 in today's world, it can happen anywhere, anytime!
yes - so much better than admin telling us what we “need” on a PD day!
Do we need credit? Or should it just be about growth mindset and making education better for our Ss?
if you can't use something now does it trigger another thought? Not all PD is imm relevant but could be useful.
A1 for me: morning writing / creating, video editing and Garage Band tutorials and focused reading
A1. Anyone who extends their learning to to others. i.e. "Just found this perfect idea from my PLN to use in ur class"
I totally agree, one conference or event can't be the end or consider ourselves experts on a topic. https://t.co/YQGjSLtsIU
A1 effective Professional Development can't be a one time event. Must be continuous and relevant
Love that last part. Mindset is so important in PD choice!
A1. Going to an edcamp this morning. Twitter chats lead to great learning. Tried this with staff recently: https://t.co/8qGPCqGOpt
RT : Q1: What does Personalized Professional Learning look like in practice? How do you know it when you see it?
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
This. Yes, exactly. With best teachers, it happens organically, all the time. They may not even realize. https://t.co/KiYikWpc9k
A1. Personalized learning is ongoing. Finding passions, pushing outside comfort zone to learn new ideas. Focuses on mindset.
A1p2: or I feel it's what we are doing right now on Twitter finding a topic relevant to us & sharing/collaborating
The collaboration and discourse piece is really important. Especially for adult learners.
Perfect example! Started a book club for . Best PD experience ever!
Twitter is our "tribe". But how do the other 93% of teachers experience personalized learning?
Made it just a little late to !
YES! How our district/schools do it.
And it's on any morning, or afternoon, or evening... if we're talking truly personalized learning. https://t.co/0bt7SDgPyL
A1: It looks like on a Saturday morning! Professionals engaged in professional discussions.
Yes! Thinking the same https://t.co/VBiky2VLEb
Shouldn't it look the same for T's and S's.? Excited, engaged people moving to a deeper level to improve.
My fav PD day.. Admin wasn't there. We wrote topics on a board and decided what to do together.
A1: I’m co-starting a book study too and an informal PD meeting called iWIN (I Want It Now) anyone can sched one
I like that you said ongoing! The follow-up is where the personalization occurs at its finest!
RT : A1 Personalized learning is what we want 4 ourselves and for our students -learning that doesn't have a limit.
Passion does become a part of it! Person interest and goals being met ignites the learner. https://t.co/I2V3atQEDj
A1 Personalized learning celebrates choice and voice. Learners invested in continuous growth, exploring passions and possibilities.
A1 Enthusiasm oozes out of personalized professional development https://t.co/HwJrpzPfyJ
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm - Ralph Waldo Emerson
A1.p3 Edcamps, Twitter, webinars, MOOCS.
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
Thanks to for my faculty subscription to to help support my summer professional development ;)
A1: personalized PD for me is Twitter! I learn what I want when I want. I love to see schools encouraging it!
Personalized learning, like differentiated instruction (aka all good teaching) is not everyone doing the same thing.
Art integration allows Ss to go much deeper and look at topics from alt views
Whatever we do, we need to package it for Ts to access later. Google Classroom
Q1: What does Personalized Professional Learning look like in practice? How do you know it when you see it?
instagram, pinterest, local book clubs, many options but they have to be willing to explore!
Agreed. Needs to move beyond. Management tips and implementation ideas.
A1p3: you know it's happening when there is thoughtful meaningful dialogues taking place & everyone is engaged
Agree! It's all about being comfortable outside your comfort zone!! https://t.co/GQzOnfZwrp
A1: a T who is connected and willing to publicly fail while trying new things is experiencing personalized learning!
A2: Ask them what they WANT to learn! Don't plan initiatives without their input, then offer options
Or more than the classroom, a S can be instant application & connection to life situations.
A1 Passionate people in any profession find ways to learn and grow without being forced.
A1 I think personalized PD comes in the form of action research. Have to have curiosity, process, and something to share w/others
A1: growing your practice in a way that matters to YOU. it may be book studies, cohort groups, PD days...but always has choice
A2. Professional learning has to be applicable & in a timely fashion. If you want Ts to use it you have to make it valuable.
Totally!!!! https://t.co/ngPdGN34Zp
A2 If you want a collaborative culture, you have to confront behaviors that aren't collaborative.
Your % makes me wonder - what is it, really? I’m guessing more like 99.7% :)
A1) PL - even district-wide - should be differentiated and varied in terms of levels of expertise and topics covered.
The key instrument in personalized learning is not some fancy tech. It’s a teacher who understands the needs of all students.
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
Academic choice! lingo but still a firm believer. Sounds like too? https://t.co/belEOzv0Th
Complete this analogy:
teachers: personalized PD ::
students: ____________
great comparison! Love it
Don't know what barcamp is but sounds like something fun for teachers 😉🙊 https://t.co/QeB6wnzRCA
A1 Barcamp, Twitter, Webinars, MOOCs: This is what todays personal learning means to me. It is interest driven and fluent.
Love the phrase, ignite the learner. :-)
A2 Ask staff what they want to learn, really listen to them, and provide options for the learning to occur. https://t.co/SE6PErjgii
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
A2 Listen to their wishes and needs and make participation possible: Collaborative learning scenarios and practical output.
A1: PPL is a person choosing to get better and finding ways to make it happen. So many choices to do so. It looks like 😞 to 🤔 to 😀
Amen! https://t.co/DUExRxHPpo
Personalized learning, like differentiated instruction (aka all good teaching) is not everyone doing the same thing.
Yes! Everyone is at different points in their learning.
A1: Refection is key in Ed. It leads to goal setting & pursuit of PPL opportunities
Q2: It helps when Ts identify their areas of need. EdCamps are awesome & growing! Any online bits are perfect too!
Love when that dialogue extends and expands out of the PLC or PD sessions. To hear Ts actually discuss w/ each other later
A1 Personalized PD & learning realizes that delivery is ongoing, formative, and two-way, open to dialogue- not canned and fixed
A2: For personalized learning to be effective, there must be a loosening of "control" w/ whomever is in charge.
Twitter should be encouraged. Other options are what leadership does in their schools - give Ts choice https://t.co/ILAlStPTeJ
Twitter is our "tribe". But how do the other 93% of teachers experience personalized learning?
Love it when it's hard to tell who the teacher is cause they aren't up at the front of the room talking. https://t.co/L32S6c6QtR
A2 Making it apply to their world…making it achievable, show results, be ready to face nay-sayers
A2: I like when I don't PD by myself. There's a lot of value in reflecting (good news! You can reflect with new friends!)
join us at right now. Talking about personalized PD
A1: Offering individualized PD tracks. You'll see it in T engagement during sessions & immediate implementation in classroom.
And also to understand that for them it might not be an alt view. It might be their primary context.
GM. Russ, FL principal. A1: PPD is giving Ts choice & power. Same we do 4 Ss.
Great and tough question #2
https://t.co/lnw3nv1C2B
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
A2 find out what they need and want. Commit to building capacity slightly beyond
Time matters more than money; w/ models of excellence T's can identify learning needs; with time can find resources & practice
A2. Make sure you do it yourself.
My sch admin needs to credit me w learning other times & not take all of my planning time for their PD.
Twitter too abstract as tribe--it's more a nation. The folks in the building are my tribe. We break bread together
true that. Tell it to the standardized tests people.... Nothing "standard" in this job for sure. https://t.co/8e58TAuEyy
A1 Personalized: twitter, Voxer, Blog posts, articles, sharing. Not one size fits all.
A2: I am a big believer of teacher driven/led PD 4 our last PD led a session
People forget how important positivity is! They are too busy disciplining! https://t.co/gMJsRcRPox
A3 Culture impacts learning & includes celebrations! Celebrations are part of a curriculum of children & The Common CARE standards.
This is so true! https://t.co/O2BfWWQqSm
A1 Passionate people in any profession find ways to learn and grow without being forced.
Now we're talking. Diversifying that context & understanding is so important.
A2: model it! Use quick thought sharing board in the faculty lounge. Put an idea up and post thoughts (like a chat). Be creative!
A1: I loved going to other Ts classrooms and observing. So many ideas - even ones I wasn't looking for.
A2: You need to answer the "WHY" question, teachers sould be inspired to take away a piece of PD and apply it to their class.
A2:that's easy, you personalize it. Make it comfortable. LUV PD from the couch w/my own coffee.
A2: Listen to what they are saying, even if its not what you were hoping to hear!
A2.You have to provide opportunities to practice the new learning. Little growth w/o practice & reflection of new learning.
A2: Involve the T in the planning & impl of prof learning. Listen to their needs & empower to own learning
A2: Give choices and gamify the PD. Staff LOVE to play just as much as Ss do. PD does not have to be painful.
A2 Meet the needs of teachers, differentiated your PD!
a2: Begin with the end in mind - Understanding by design - Ts list yearly/monthly goals, then find PD to fit those goals
A2: There needs to be a culture of trust and respect for this to be effective. You can not feel you must control everything.
Love that A1: has shifted towards the students! Isn't that what the goal is of our PD- helping them?
totally agreed. Plan to meet their leaning needs.
A2: Ask Ts what they want to learn, provide time for learning, & planning.
A2 Engagement comes through caring and conversations. Conenct personalized learning to individual wants and needs.
A2: PD more relevant for T's = it's about the T's learning not the presenter getting through info! Connect, share, individualize
A1: personalized professional learning is about building relationships & trust among coach-teacher teacher-teacher teacher-student
A2 obviously you give them choice but more than that, they define what and how they learn. That's important.
A2) Try and design PL so Ts come out of it with something they can concretely apply (or tell a joke)
A2: Survey staff to figure out their needs and desires. EdCamp format is great to start dialogues & learning!
A2: Ts need variety, some face to face, some online, some book study, so a lot of different PD options is best
A1:All cookie cutters removed, differentiation not just for Ss. Ts come w/various experiences.
A2: Little bit of talk, lots of practice, tons of time to plan, freedom to implement as needed.
A2: start with what Ts are interested in! Ss have higher motivation to learn about their interests, same for Ts
Show the power of what you are preaching...lead by example!
A2) Don't "make" it for them. Let them build it, with coaching along the way to help achieve their goals. https://t.co/bayKhKD21I
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
A2: having PD topics of interest and by having options to complete PD (podcasts, collab projects, Twitter, etc.)
A2: by offering or finding opportunities that are engaging and relevant! Simple message but often missing https://t.co/DzY6PP5QV8
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
So impt. to actually read the book; many folks think they know what mindset is--w/o Dweck's explanation, faulty thinking
I agree; many’s the time I’ve thought of saying ridiculous things like “after 7th grade it should be ALL choice”.
I'll try to find the statistic somewhere, but I feel that someone mentioned 7% of educators w/ Twitter accounts.
Yes! https://t.co/nTevVgQA2D
A1 Passionate people in any profession find ways to learn and grow without being forced.
but many will take that PD, say that was great, then never apply it / use it in the classroom - how do we fix that?
A2 Still working on this. Trying to keep PD bite sized. Length of time doesn't equal quality. Short sharing/application sessions
A2: Ask Ts what they need! Then offer choice.
If it's among a tribe, how can you call it personalized?
A2) Give them the options of choice, and the ability to leave if it's not what they need.
A2. We can make professional learning more engaging/relevant by - offering choice (edcamps) and providing meaningful follow-up.
right everyone gets what they need and if we time it right we flip a change switch.
A2: As a presenter, I make it interactive and engaging. T's need to feel invested in the learning.
A2: you offer more than one main idea. Tech. relationships, contents etc. something 4 everyone.
A2: Allow teachers to teach each other. We rarely have time to observe & learn from one another.
A2: Include them in the process. Met with teams for each grade level, subject area and planned it together.
A2 We already know the answer(s) to this: Give them autonomy. Provide quality. Respect their expertise. Don't waste their time.
A2: allowing teachers a say in what the PD involves, if it isn't relevant they won't gain as much from it.
Being comfortable is si important, great tip!
I'm standing at the staring line of a race and tweet chatting at the same time. That's multitasking 🏃🏼🤔
Q2 personalized professional learning must meet our teachers at the need & interest levels.
A2: you make sure that PL is differentiated because one size does not grow all
Q2: Being able to personalize learning automatically makes it more relevant to Ts! Don't teach what we already know.
A2: Through observation and listening. Find ways to find out where their needs are and create opportunities to meet their needs
A2: Make it relevant to children, to life, to responsible citizenship.
Just as important--ignore "relevance" to corporate life.
we don't get a list to choose from. I think they ask, not sure, because I don't remember getting anything not required.
twitter isn't "better" but it works for me
by choosing to read/watch vids or observing other Ts, apply it, & share 😀 https://t.co/8pnxJBmzaB
Twitter is our "tribe". But how do the other 93% of teachers experience personalized learning?
A1: Stop treating LEARNERS like clones (Ss & Ts). Meet people where they are & w/ their passions. https://t.co/Pl1ZI6BzC2
I wonder how many actually use them for chats like this. Watching over the years I’d guess maybe 1000?
The other question is what percentage of that 7 are actively involved & invested in Twitter as a learning medium?
We took Ts out of supervision periods & brought in subs for PLC's. Respect Ts time is key. Don't take away time
Totally agree! Just like being a classroom teacher! https://t.co/8BpVpdUFGg
A2: There needs to be a culture of trust and respect for this to be effective. You can not feel you must control everything.
A2 by utilizing models such as where teachers are led by own interest allow them to explore!!
I hope that our upcoming assessment meeting, where we will offer snapshots of our teaching, will launch us into summer learning.
CREATIVITY / STEM IS THE ARTS! You can’t have one with out the other. Confused? https://t.co/zjDXdU3HPB
Creativity & STEM without the Arts? Lacks context/substance.
A2-Ts need input and choice so learning is worth the time https://t.co/EmRVZMmjHs
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
So true! Just went to a mini workshop the other day and left with a pile of materials to use the next day! https://t.co/a5xWE3HTCm
A2) Try and design PL so Ts come out of it with something they can concretely apply (or tell a joke)
How does one do that inside of 10 months?
Amen! it isn't about seat time
2A) Safe opportunities for risk taking = positive results
When my goal is measured I make it achievable, when my goal is personal I shoot for the moon
if one feels they need to control everything, this avenue is certainly not for them.
Hello friend! Happy Saturday!
just as we emphasize student voice in the classroom it is important to emphasize teacher voice as well
I agree Lisa. As a tech coach I get to do that all the time. I often view myself as a pollinator, moving ideas around
observing other Ts is the most underutilized form of PD our profession has
it's such a beautiful idea people naturally cling to it but it's a book that has to be read.
UBD! Setting goals is important for teachers too!
Yes. Differentiation is very important. Also in professional development, not only for your students.
Ts need to recognise what they need first for the learning to 'stick', right
A2: giving choice, which allows them to make it meaningful. Could be Ed camp style format to allow choice & collaborative learning.
A2 Change the “you” to “they.” Teachers need to be involved from the start, including the “why” of professional learning
A2: staff providing feedback; listening to their wants and goals
A2: Give options. Recognize the talent w/in 4 walls. We tried Resident Expert Day. Ts presented & learned from each other.
a2 Marry passions and purpose, have more edcamp learning opporunities, literacy forums, GHO, webinar- expand definition of PD.
Everyone is saying the same- ask Ts and listen https://t.co/20JERS4e1R
A2: Involve the T in the planning & impl of prof learning. Listen to their needs & empower to own learning
Absolutely! As the head of a learning center (school), the culture should surround the concept https://t.co/EGuC9vlYbM
The principal should foster a learning-centered culture in the school
A2) You let teachers lead PD in and style PD where Ts can find what they need for their professional growth
A2: I share personal experiences or take-aways through my blog or discussions w/colleagues.
A1: Personalized PD provides choice for Ts. While I definitely support PPD, it's important to have some common strategies too.
A2) Discuss actionable take-always, next steps, and other resources available. How will this make us more effective as Ts?
We have Ts head sessions and others choose which 2 go 2. Luv it!
A1: personalized learning for Ss and Ts focuses on something the individual wants to improve on and sees benefit from doing so.
This is one area of importance to me. Lead by example and teach by example. Learning is everything.
A2: Offer choice, voice, variety. The idea is to empower Ts to grow not bc they have to, but bc they want to improve for their Ss
absolutely. You need to be comfortable with "controlled chaos"
A2: admins also need to know what Ts are doing and build upon it. Don't assume we all do the same thing. Know your Ts!
A2) Choice and variety! Not only for in house, provide opportunities for conferences, can't always be only in house
I think the sense of “personalized” that’s being used here is that of “joining out of free choice”.
A2: Ts want choice and voice in their learning. What do you need? What do you want? How can we help you find that?
trusting each other! Great point...not being afraid to fail!
A2 One size doesn't fit all. Has to be tailored to the individual.
Same here. Our district encourages us to visit other classrooms, other schools. I have learned so much https://t.co/MOwqyQnRJk
A1: I loved going to other Ts classrooms and observing. So many ideas - even ones I wasn't looking for.
A2: ask! PD shouldn't be prescribed, it has to be based on needs and wants. Again EdCamp style is a great way PD method.
I couldn't agree more. This doesn't work so well.
A2: Let them propose personalized PL opps if the budget allows. If not, develop a system to allow PL time to happen virtually.
thanks! Looking forward to it! Will be at starting soon!
Ditti! Well said.....an extension from PLC discussions https://t.co/ffiGMosRNK
Love when that dialogue extends and expands out of the PLC or PD sessions. To hear Ts actually discuss w/ each other later
A1:Definitely more T input regarding topics & styles; may see style
A2: to engage Ts they need to be ready & willing & see the need for growth. Provide that just in time knowledge to get them there.
my advisees have to set weekly goals and share them with me. I share my weekly goal w/ them as well. important to model
Indeed a buy into what they are learning .. A current need in their classes https://t.co/ngHjGAOEie
A1 I think personalized PD comes in the form of action research. Have to have curiosity, process, and something to share w/others
A2: Teacher voice--listen to what they think will relevant and interesting.
I hate walking away and thinking there's an idea but then I don't like it a week later. Need solid ideas
And not just consuming those mediums, but also curating and creating content, as well.
yes! ...because that means learning is happening 🤓
I need to get myself to an sounds awesome!
A2. Start with Why- then How +last What. "People don't by what you do, they buy why you do it" https://t.co/xWGaF8ZCwB
A2: Actually involve them in PD decision making. Choice and connections with others can make PD personal
you work with some of my friends. But I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting you.
Q2: ASK! I'm new asTL in my school and I always ask "What do you need/what can I do for you?"
Choice and voice! This works for Ts in PD and Ss in the classroom! https://t.co/xIUj0jOHww
A2: Offer choice, voice, variety. The idea is to empower Ts to grow not bc they have to, but bc they want to improve for their Ss
A2: 1/ You credential it. Ed doesn't recognize PD or MOOC, only college $$ courses, yet MOOCS teach just as much..
A2 The same way you do for S's. Start by giving T's more of a voice in their PD.
A2: One-on-one conversations. Let the teacher talk through where to grow.
That's b/c it works! I know from experience.
A2: remove the sit and get! Let them be heard! I know what I need help on, let me tell you not vice versa. https://t.co/e1S7O0FZmj
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
when Professional learning is needs & interests based it becomes more relevant & exciting 4 the teacher
A2: Offer choice on topics needed by Ts, un conference model
A2 ensure the PL is relevant and includes collaboration, an action research model is ideal
A2. Allow Ts to have voice and choice. Ideally reflective practitioners who seek growth & refinement know what their PPL needs are.
A2: providing time for planning and reflection; take away that can be immediately implemented
and my iWIN PD is for anyone wanting to learn a topic, putting out the word, picking a time/place and meeting peeps
A2) I see a lot of answers involving risk taking and safety. Is it a risk if it's safe? Curious how we make both of these a reality
A2 always provide choices in delivery. Differentiate for Ts like we do for Ss!
For me, has been an incredible personalized learning environment that allows me to self-direct my learning.
A2) Foster a culture of continuous improvement & "what do you do with an idea?" leadership. https://t.co/MWfXagZ8pX
Absolutely! I learned more when I observed others when I trained for Reading Recovery! personal observation https://t.co/kYZpCEKvjR
A2: Allow teachers to teach each other. We rarely have time to observe & learn from one another.
A2: We must be clear on the broader purpose. Why are we learning about gradual release, student talk, FAs, questioning?
A2 about agency with essentially have a plan and make room for Ss to lead careful observation work req
A2 Provide Ts with choices for their own PD. Most will enjoy the flexibility and opportunity to explore. Communicate.
A2: More engaging & relevant PD for T's means smaller grouped PD - less mass trainings - more focus on individual growth
A2.2 Teachers as zombies, pirates, etc. Gamification is powerful for teachers and Ss. Play is important to learning and exploring
if others in your "tribe" know something you don't, ask them to share? https://t.co/KsryVNRVaq
If it's among a tribe, how can you call it personalized?
A2 make PD differentiated so it applies to all Ts & not just few. Good Ts want to learn when it can be directly applied to class
As tech. coach and reading resource teacher, I loved tips I picked up from each T. I think I'm a better T because of it.
A2: When working with knowledgeable others, ensure that they have a clear understanding of the perspective and learning needs of Ts
Interesting idea, can the people of a nation also be a tribe or are those mutually exclusive?
Learning needs to be differentiated to cater to starting point
We just did some multitasking experiments in my class. Didn't think of Dave's! https://t.co/j0j3W3OIK9
I'm standing at the staring line of a race and tweet chatting at the same time. That's multitasking 🏃🏼🤔
I so deeply loathe the term "personalized pd". Veneer of autonomy upon a still imperious belief set
A2: Give freedom and time to practice, fail, reflect, and improve upon any new skills/ideas- empower others to share their learning
Hello, Maryann from PA. It's been a while since I've . Glad to see some district friends have joined the chat!
A2 You won’t “make” PD more engaging & relevant for ALL teachers because you can’t. You can offer options.
A2: Personalized learning is NOT signing into a compliance website to complete trainings. Give Ts voice & choice in how they learn.
Personalized tracks is awesome! https://t.co/ujMVsA16d7
A1: Offering individualized PD tracks. You'll see it in T engagement during sessions & immediate implementation in classroom.
A2 (only somewhat in jest) Do not make them play "getting to know you" activities before they can participate in PD.
So important! Wish more districts did this! Even looking within district is beneficial!
A2: Focus on relationship building and collaboration. Seek on the needs of Ts and base PL on T needs.
well said. without the culture of collegiality present, I think this has a tough time being successful.
A2 Ts can get overworked and parcc out! Good people is their life support..make it worth while
Agreed, why waste a good thing?
A2: relationship is crucial to make any learning engaging. But be sincere & walk the talk is impt too.
a2. You make it more relevant and engaging by letting them decide what they need. If we don't they will simply tune out anyway.
A2.p2: Some PL should still be based on areas of personal or areas of campus needed improvement.
Ts need to be hands on in PLC's. Not a lecture on how to use iMovie. Make a movie. Make a trailer. Model for them.
Agree. Twitter inspires me to better serve my own people. This is where the real work happens.
I love how you put this. Yes. https://t.co/yBY679reeZ
A2) You let teachers lead PD in and style PD where Ts can find what they need for their professional growth
: I dig this point, Jim. Buy-in is only necessary when people are being forced to learn.
A2: inspire & empower teachers to learn/grow on own time. Outside PD gets you pumped to try new things & keeps teachers fresh
A tribe are people who have similar beliefs but experience & express them in different ways.
I am an Edu junkie. Get on Eventbrite and do a local search for Ed camps and I'm positive someone be near you.
A2: I think that, like most Ss, many Ts have gotten out of the habit of questioning, being curious...
Q2 When the teacher sees their performance & student outcomes improve from their learning - win for all
A2: Ts must be moving, collaborating, & rflectng on their prof. learning. Thru discs & action, ts remember the practice of action.
A2:Meet Ts where they are, give what is needed, make relevant, keep engaging, & do not forget technology.
It really doesn't open you up to looking at things in a different way. https://t.co/o1Tra0hqVf
As tech. coach and reading resource teacher, I loved tips I picked up from each T. I think I'm a better T because of it.
you got it, Paula. And hi. 🙂
This is important! https://t.co/MoX8DsR9uc
So true! Just went to a mini workshop the other day and left with a pile of materials to use the next day! https://t.co/a5xWE3HTCm
A2) Try and design PL so Ts come out of it with something they can concretely apply (or tell a joke)
A2: I suppose the same way we do it with kids: Helping them find something that ignites their learning, and then watching it grow.
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
: If our learning spaces -- for adults OR students -- were truly personalized, there'd be no need for "building buy in."
thank you! I will definitely check it out
A2 Teachers can always spot someone who could not "walk the walk" in their classrooms.
A2: "more engaging" is often not the participants fault...
A2 It is about choice and interaction...don't just let Ts sit at PD make them engage and put their hands and mind to use
It does have a weasel-word sense, doesn’t it? School systems are intrinsically about control.
A2:5/9 :00 pm g an iWIN at Don Jose in Lake Elsinore to chat about blogging and using FB for edu other topics develop organically
yes. You do not have to convince me to get involved if I control what I get involved in!
A2: by looking at their students and setting teaching goals to impact learning in those groups of students https://t.co/oRJxUsuxwO
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
A2. Let Ts organize https://t.co/VYPBWpfwE8
Q2: How do you make professional learning more engaging and relevant to teachers?
A great example of Twitter in action! https://t.co/KRYuJTVdsh
For me, has been an incredible personalized learning environment that allows me to self-direct my learning.
Sorry to be missing in today. Have a connected day!
Check our recent Personalize Learning - Transform Classrooms & Communities podcast out! https://t.co/MTb7VmNNby via
Tribe is subset of a nation--or maybe "clan" woud be a better word than "tribe." We lose too much in the abstract.
Teachers are students at heart, in that they like to have fun as much as the kids!
There are so many amazing people in our district. I'm very blessed to have seen them in action.
A2: Asking is important, but sometimes Ts don't know what's available. Edcamps are good start. Offer innovative choices...
A1: such a good question! Ties in perfectly with domain 4 of Danielson!! Twitter chats and edcamp have been ways for me recently
Amen! https://t.co/1YqJODfzuq
A2 Teachers can always spot someone who could not "walk the walk" in their classrooms.
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
Is "personalized" taking it too far? I want differentiated, not individualized. Don't want to lose the sense of community/tribe.
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
A2: ...I'm curious what others' ideas are for bringing that curiosity back-- b/c simply offering "choice" (EdCamp style)...
What about required compliance training like blood borne pathogens? Better on website than F2F, right? https://t.co/0LXygSZrX7
A2: Personalized learning is NOT signing into a compliance website to complete trainings. Give Ts voice & choice in how they learn.
Yes! This topic is perfect as we're just brainstorming all possibilities for our Ts. What would you choose to learn?
Personalized learning (again as with Ss) is about engaging minds, hearts and hands. Knowing, feeling, doing.
totally agree. This has been another big focus of mine this year! And being available for Ts to come and ask Qs.
sounds like a win/win to me! https://t.co/XgCkaZL7bD
A2: Focus on relationship building and collaboration. Seek on the needs of Ts and base PL on T needs.
Good pd is the life support for teachers now a days because of testing and overworked
Seek out what's needed.Utilize , online chats and groups, have coffee 🍷🍺 with colleagues, take advantage of all learning ops
would love to see a study done on how school wide discipline is when personalized learning is consistent.
A2: you create personalized PD that targets T needs and couple it with follow through. It can't be one day and done
Hi Colm here. Primary teacher Ireland
A2: Authentic tasks are crucial. Make assessments that harnesses edtech, standards, and real-world application.
Better together indeed! Couldn't agree more.
A2: "But that's the way we've always done it." Needs to be a banned sentence.
A3.Grow teachers as leaders by empowering them. Empower them to use their knowledge and expertise to support other Ts.
A2.p4 Maybe delineate btwn PDs and PPL? It's great to have some of both. Ts control their PPL & team leaders+principals decide PD.
Ah, so the inclusion of creativity is used instead of the A in STEAM?
teaching is teaching and learners are learners! What works.... Works!
Need admin to understand & support risks Ts take. Know that all won't always go as planned & that's OK. https://t.co/QKf129Yljq
A2) I see a lot of answers involving risk taking and safety. Is it a risk if it's safe? Curious how we make both of these a reality
A3 teachers have their own passions/knowledge which they can share with their peers
Didn’t even know about that one! Rats.
A3: when you have teacher leaders in your building give them platforms to coach and inspire other faculty members
Q2 Staying grounded in improved teacher performance & improved outcomes for students makes for relevancy & excitement in the work
...isn't always effective. Last EdCamp we did, we had very few Ts show any real curiosity or offer suggestions for sessions
If you don't have the students' attention, it doesn't matter what you think you are teaching. https://t.co/cq9Vy8WCnM
A3 I have grown through the work I am doing as an Emerging Leader
A3 For Ts and Pre-Ts professionalism must be stressed. Daily PD via Twitter and a strong PLN builds teacher leaders.
A3 letting them build on their success and failures…lead by example, empower them to make their own decisions and watch the results
Not much different than teaching Ss...Model and engage! https://t.co/7wcN9Ed1f4
Ts need to be hands on in PLC's. Not a lecture on how to use iMovie. Make a movie. Make a trailer. Model for them.
Check out A pineapple board was created at our MS. Great way for sharing! https://t.co/96NCsEjFBL
A2: model it! Use quick thought sharing board in the faculty lounge. Put an idea up and post thoughts (like a chat). Be creative!
A2 will this info help me be a better T will it improve my content management decision making Can I implement these ideas tomorrow
A3. As Ts share, listen to the ways they would like to lead, provide opportunities where possible/ support risk taking.
Yes! Grow a culture of Peer-to-Peer Learning! Relevant. In context. Conversations that build relationships & continue.
A2: Admins should promote style PD opportunities & restructure meetings to give Ts a chance to learn w/their colleagues.
A3 Use of classroom lighthouses showcasing excellence
A2 The fact that edcamps are packed shows T's willingness to learn in the right setting.
A3: Ts need freedom to make meaningful decisions. Without that trust they cannot share the yoke of leadership.
A3) Give them opportunities to lead meetings or train the staff on what they are passionate about
Might help admins to support personalized PL is a way to follow up and ensure teacher learning is working and being applied.
A3: T leader growth needs to come from opportunities to do PD, be part of active committees, write curriculum & improve instruction
Recognize talent, vision, passion and allow T's to self-organize learning; delegate decision-making to the invested & inspired
A3: Allow Ts to explore areas of interest & take action in ways that create meaning for them, as we would for Ss
Best scenario is after we discuss something, Ts go out and partner up to revamp a lesson using the tool.
A3) All Ts are leaders. They have a classroom of followers. Not all are extroverted with other adults so provide avenues for all.
Students:Personalized learning
A1-Ts are given choice & then make a good choice for them based on interest, weaknesses, or CLT-needs/commitment.
A3: start with: "How could we make this place better?" Then, be open to letting them work on the ways they created to improve.
So true, I pick up a book because I WANT to. If I am told what to read, most likely I won't enjoy it as much
A3) Help them find their passions and support them to take action. Nudge when needed. Listen. Care. https://t.co/QjEo2cEdnS
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
A3: Inspire them and give them room to grow. Let them know "leader" isn't just a title...
Families should be able to know the school's goals for professional growth as well as for their own child. https://t.co/ZhMrmKVkMX
Q1 There might be 2 lvls. At higher lvl is the overall school goals. Next lvl, it is abt how individuals learn up to meet e goals.
A2: There has to be follow-up with the learning. Did the PD allow for action, reflection, and review of successes and challenges?
A3. Build T leaders by providing opportunitites for them to lead. Mentoring, presenting, coaching. Create a leadership pipeline.
A3. Try to create a culture in the school where everyone gets an opportunity and wants to lead something to benefit kids.
facilitate cliimate and community of learners where all Ts and Ss view themselves as lead learners.
in that case, there is no other learning but personalized learning. no?
A3: Support their ideas, share learning resources, provide leadership opportunities.
A3: empowering Ts to use, learn, and share knowledge with Ss and fellow Ts 😊
A2. Can you make "1 size fits all" relevant PD?
In this view of PD, Ts (adults) are self-motivated, curious, & autonomous.
At what age does a person (say, a S) reach this point?
If we recognise and believe all Ss learn differently, surely we should allow Ts the same opportunity
A3: Give teachers room to grow. There's no growth in conformity and compliance.
Signing off have a great week global pln
A3
Let them take risks
Give them confidence
A2 Also Admin has to trust that Ts know what they need to grow as professionals and provide a variety of options for PD.
A3: Give teachers opportunities to exercise leadership, don’t micromanage or view Ts as threatening authority. Reward initiative!
A3 Encourage, support, listen, provide opportunities, build strong relationships, model risks. https://t.co/ifwgMXWPYZ
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
Change requires teacher leaders & relationships built upon trust
Teachers are the key agents of change in schools
A3: Many schools grow T leaders by involving in decision making process via committees. Build culture of collaboration and T voice
It really DOES open you up to looking at things differently.
Good Morning ! Craig from Central Ohio joining a bit late. I serve at the middle level. to be exact. Love the topic of PD!
Interesting idea. Discussion topic could be "Vocabulary, how word choice affects context"
A3: Ts should inspire their Ss, inspire them inside and outside the classroom. Good leaders inspire those around them.
A3) Empower them, value their input, encourage, trust, listen
A3: Build T leaders by inviting them to leadership opps. Beyond chair a committee. Here is a call for presenters at a conference...
: I struggle with the tension between a required curriculum and personalized learning all the time.
For teachers, perhaps. For students…?
a3: let teachers take chances and risks - allow their lesson to fail and support them to try again
A3: You teach them to the extent that they won't need u anymore.
A3: by watching what my teachers' interests, researching new strategies aligned with interests, applying new strat's, developing PD
A3: provide opportunities to prepare and lead meetings/PD. Ts want and need to share their talents with each other. Empower new Ts!
Unfortunately too many admin forget that in new positions - or aren't comfortable w/ the change. They need to LEAD
A3 Sometimes good to let Ts see and decide who the tr leaders are among them. These are the ones that gain much respects.
A3) Provide pathways to leadership: time on staff agndas, moderating twitter chats, afterschool PD like Think Tech Thursday
Thanks for the push on this.
I also realize that, as a profession, we've done this to one another. I don't blame the Ts for a seeming lack of curiosity.
A3 By providing opportunities for Ts to share their learning with other Ts. Giving them voice. https://t.co/mPWBOmyTfZ
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
good point. I know for me it was changing role - from T to TL. A sabbatical, classes, new job - totally inspired….
agree - can take the place of staff meetings - choice is the most important factor in PD
I tell teachers the reason Twitter is so great for PD is bc it's personalized, asynchronous, and unlimited to people & content
A3 give them opportunities to share ideas&thoughts.Through a model, leaders rise up..it's easy to see initiative
We celebrate the learning of S's; need to celebrate the learning T's, too; show we are a community of learners at all ages
Great idea! https://t.co/ONu9myJv7i
A3: start with: "How could we make this place better?" Then, be open to letting them work on the ways they created to improve.
A3: Build on their strengths and give them the opportunity to shine! Empower & encourage them. Ask them to join you in projects.
remember Ss aren't the only ones w/short attention spans. Sounds like you're on right track. https://t.co/o2pjmpGk9u
A2 Still working on this. Trying to keep PD bite sized. Length of time doesn't equal quality. Short sharing/application sessions
well that's where I question this then. is that learning or reinforcement of what we believe?
A3: as a preservice T, I think it all starts with encouraging Ts to let their voice be heard and share their story
A2: utilize teacher expertise, elevate collegial, choice, professionalism
Partnerships, collaborative conversations, coaching cycles... all make the learning "sticky".
And offering support after the training through coaching helps some get over the fear.
A3:Give a venue to share successes & lead learning with the school Ts want to see specifically how to bring PD in the classroom
Ts need to change things up too - new units, new “toys”, new grade level?
A3: to grow T leaders you provide them agency, voice, trust, & encourage them to dream & do what they know they can & should 4 Ss!
A3: Tap into their skills & offer them to present to a group of interested Ts. Let it be known that they are the Resident Expert.
A3 "How to Thrive as a Teacher Leader" is great to share with new dept heads and other TLs. https://t.co/A19dGtyGkK
We need 2 build time into the day for teachers expecially 4 those who say there is NO time.
: I also find it hard to expect teachers who have little control over PD to make personalized learning a priority.
I would love if my smaller school could have a PD day with other schools in area. Explore/share with others, see what's out there.
A3: "If you build it, they will come" applies to attracting T leaders and supporting them with voice and choice.
A3: Talk to edus. Find out what they enjoy.Invite them to join a board, committee, etc. See where it goes. Great recruiting tactic.
A3: Grow T leaders by cultivating a mindset that supports risk taking
A3: Teachers grow as leaders when they can lead. Tap them to facilitate prof development, lead committees, speak to parents, etc.
perfect for today's topic
Food always brings them in! :-)
A3 great leaders develop internal leaders & nuture a culturally responsive environment of shared ownership & decision making
A3 Same way we do w/Ss. Jigsaw. Some Ts went to a TCEA conf & brought back 1 thing to teach to other Ts, like a mini workshop.
The schedule has time built in and doesn't require subs at all... https://t.co/rP9quAQpce
We took Ts out of supervision periods & brought in subs for PLC's. Respect Ts time is key. Don't take away time
I think sometimes it will just depend on the training but 9 out of 10 trainings can be Personalized
yes! Having ideas you didn't even know Ts wanted til they asked leads to great opps
A2: Clear outcomes that provide teachers direction allow for focused PD that is timely, problem-based and results oriented.
we have to be truly honest with ourselves and let students make mistakes
A3: by providing horizontal and vertical learning opportunities . Horizontal = learned; vertical = earned
A3: Build T leaders by bringing them into strategic side of admin. Bestow some trust, be vulnerable yourself.
I’m not that far from there - wish I’d known. Looking into Hershey on 7/18.
Would rather offer Ts a choice in F2F or logging on. No interaction. No reflection.
A3: empowering teacher leaders is about a collaborative culture- sharing not just successes but failure too
Interesting point as this is not crucial from I am from. https://t.co/8djNGyU9Dv
Families should be able to know the school's goals for professional growth as well as for their own child. https://t.co/ZhMrmKVkMX
Q1 There might be 2 lvls. At higher lvl is the overall school goals. Next lvl, it is abt how individuals learn up to meet e goals.
perhaps. but if we are all similar, we may be just reinforcing our own beliefs.
Tough one! Give space. Model enthusiastic learning. Create choices. Make part of the decision process. https://t.co/dDUJkyFAix
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
Admin needs to encourage taking risks, Ts need to feel safe if they fail, not feel like they'll be reprimanded
An interesting thoughts. Ss experience individualized paths no matter how much we try to dictate the path.
A3: Dedicate funding to PD opps elsewhere and weekly opps to bring that PD back. Train the trainer models have worked well for us!
A2: Search for professional learning opportunities that relate to your content area and if you feel something is lacking- start it!
A2: there honestly is a variety of options for professional learning and devpt out there already, Ts need to be willing to look!
I think you see the strengths in others and helps the climate too.
Why would teachers who never owns their own learning create opportunities for the kids in their classes to do the same?
Q3: I think it's all about tapping into their strengths. Help them find what they are good at, stretch them, and make them better.
Agreed!!!! Looking forward to seeing my and tribe!!! https://t.co/zjLaDpmwT7
AMEN. Looking forward to live convo on this. Hope to see you at meet up 5/19,
A3) Create a yr-long PD opp. patterned after ; have always thought this would help all Ts lead w/ end of year showcase
One of my districts is using the Edcamp style staff mtgs and the teachers are LOVING I! https://t.co/9T5RwsWMQN
agree - can take the place of staff meetings - choice is the most important factor in PD
A3: Provide opps for them to interact outside of your school with others in & outside of edu sector.
A3 Don't assume that bc a T is a great T, she or he knows how to lead other Ts. Provide mentoring & PD specifically on being a TL.
Sarah from Ann Arbor, MI popping in & out of
yes it's less overwhelming in a coaching environment.
A3 By giving opportunities to learn leadership skills, by encouraging their growth and skills and providing a safe environment.
A3: Encourage their passions! Celebrate innovation!
Thank you for great first 1/2. Sorry to run. Have a great weekend everyone.
all PD shld b abt determineing how oneself can fit into an org. Instead we do content / skill attainment
A3) Delegate ownership of the school and its operations. If everyone isn't invested in the goal and vision, why are we there?
A3: Stay true to mission and goals of the school/district, model humility & patience. Nurture independence. Provide tools
OnDemand!Team, few Ts, or a T has interest in new learning. Find them a peer who is good at that and connect them!
that was my yesterday! every prep spent with Ts and helping classes in our lab, etc. Crazy busy but I love it!
yes, and up to the Admins to inspire and direct, must like we do w/ our students
Bring this idea to your admin! Great idea https://t.co/xyHtgxeuZt
I would love if my smaller school could have a PD day with other schools in area. Explore/share with others, see what's out there.
Seek out those that want to:
Reflect on professional practices
Grow teacher leaders
Guess I'm bestowing my own opinion about the boring blood borne pathogens. Just get it over EVERY YEAR.
Encourage open conversation in reaching your mission and vision.
Or do the Arts provide the foundational skills for STEM? Truly symbiotic in my mind.
A3. Great leaders understand the difference between managing and leading. They know when to apply each.
Good Morning Scott from Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle. It's early. They aren't fully awake yet.
A3: create opportunities for Ts to facilitate discussion, workshops, and give them a voice in decision making
A3: Focus on strengths of Ts. Give ample opportunities to learn. Everyone is a learner, everyone is a leader. Celebrate this!
love the way you phrased that!
True. It was just so surprising. Sometimes sudden choice can be overwhelming.
: There's the key, right: Personalized learning of any kind takes time -- and we do little to prioritize it.
agreed, time is a barrier, but they need to be convinced that the learning should take priority.
And if you watch the same video every single year, are you learning? 😴
read mathematical mindsets. Great book and great discussions.
A2: Job embedded, visiting classrooms is authentic professional learning.
I try 2 encourage more Twitter. Collaborate , nurture and nudge out of nest A3
I really like this idea. I share some of this during lunch-n-learns for parents.
A3 A culture which is authentically student-centered and values teachers as leaders and professionals is the foundation
A3: T leaders are out there. 1)find them 2)utilize there strengths 3)build a small group of followers 4)spread word
Side note, looking for resources/research why + calls matter. TY in advance @@MsKavner
A3 Provide context for Ts to ask/answer their own Qs of practice & share w/others. Provide levers, not lids, when it comes to PD
A1. Could be small group (PLC) learning around like interests or needs. Hopefully it is school supported
A3: An entrepreneurial mindset helps Ts turn ideas into action & inspire others to pursue passion projects. Leaders create leaders
to me, that’s one of the most important roles of a TL and my Ts have been really responsive to it.
A3: Model being the leader you would follow. Influence others to achieve their own greatness. Working together!
And sadly Ts who don't want to grow often have Ss who don't want to grow.
definitely! Ts rep their experiences and their edu. Think outside the box is key 4 growth. https://t.co/IkCghNViLS
A3: Give teachers room to grow. There's no growth in conformity and compliance.
A3 effectively distributing leadership allows for the relocation of time & energy to responsibilities unique to the principalship
We do this, and it's great!
A3: By letting them be involved in planning/decision making. Letting them take risks & be creative. Empowerment
A3. To make leaders: Take Ts out of classrm. Give opp to coach, mini-present, showcase their work, show off their teaching skills.
hell yes. when they haven't learned what we tried to force, they've chosen. =D
Q3: Sometimes you have to ask Ts to step into leadership role, then support. Not all take lead automatically but can w/ support
no doubt. If they are always on a leash, there is no incentive to want to run ahead.
Can you tell I have a dog?
I also like to have collective accountability w visible goals and peer learning walks
A3: Sometimes Admin see more in Ts than Ts see in themselves. Encourage and nurture.
good to see you in the chat this AM!
The info doesn't change. Not sure it's about learning, it's about State compliance in this isolated example.
Analogous to education in general: it should be about helping Ss figure out where they fit in the world.
So true. Committee chair is not the only opportunity in modern day leadership. https://t.co/LSQdkFo5hK
A3: Build T leaders by inviting them to leadership opps. Beyond chair a committee. Here is a call for presenters at a conference...
True fact but sometimes we do have to deal with the required information even though it is same.
- did you see this? Not that I think you’ll need it, being so awesome!
wonder if it's crucial anywhere! Where is it standard for families to be informed about the learning their kids' Ts get?
for everyone in the school. Well said.
A3) With natural leaders in the classroom, I find it good to just get out of their way.
give teachers better access to tools and support they need. Supply paint to the artist
Absolutely! Do most of you out there have this??? https://t.co/PrhFNXPtQD
Admin needs to encourage taking risks, Ts need to feel safe if they fail, not feel like they'll be reprimanded
Celebrate growth and the learning journey. Thinking about mentor author ' Going Places. https://t.co/H0eVsKZzbb
Q2 Staying grounded in improved teacher performance & improved outcomes for students makes for relevancy & excitement in the work
A3: Leaders are grown in Ts when they are given opportunities to show their skills and use the talents.
Yes! Have T input included on school PD Plan
Interesting at the univ level, what PD there is =optional.
But imo profs NEED it!
I am 6 min behind on my tweets. Can’t keep up! Sorry!!
a3. We grow teachers as leaders by giving them opportunities to lead. It has nothing to do with a title.
Anybody work in a place that uses badging for PD? What is the success?
So interesting how an nature choice can so strongly affect for nurtured instinct. (Nature vs nurture etc)
I get it. What if you could take a first aid course instead? Wouldn't that be more useful?
My choice is to learn about gamification in my classroom & increase the use of makerspaces/play, too
A3 An opportunity to help is an opportunity to lead. Leadership is not about a title. Leadership is about service.
: As a teacher, every time I hear "learning is a priority," my brain adds on "as long as our test scores are good."
Interesting. How does such open sharing help to strengthen school-parent partnership?
A3: Show what growth looks like in yourself. Keep it real, be transparent. Share the journey of learning. And, model.
yep, so why not align PD to that? Format teaches more than content
I wonder how this could be a more formal process. Do you have book clubs @ ur skool?
Schools w/ collegial collaboration:
Rely on teacher leaders | Community nurtures and supports
Prof Susan in central IL also joining now. Will read through to catch up. Best to all.
I totally agree with this! Admin has to grow leaders! Being a Tleader has to be valued https://t.co/txNzGd8b06
A3: Sometimes Admin see more in Ts than Ts see in themselves. Encourage and nurture.
true but everyone is different. What interests some may not interest others. This is why I like learning on my own
A3: The DOE provided a grant for teacher leaders; modules on intell engag, data & stands provided great opps for learning.
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
A3: developing leaders is not just about dev of competencies. We need to grow bigger minds for the future
Genius hour came to my mind, as well! Great idea. https://t.co/JTbQ9kgAVS
A3) Create a yr-long PD opp. patterned after ; have always thought this would help all Ts lead w/ end of year showcase
we tried something like this the past two years, difficult b/c of making things 'leveled' or 'equal'
Well said! https://t.co/WBguRvgaBq
A3: Model being the leader you would follow. Influence others to achieve their own greatness. Working together!
A3:Admins should know their Ts, develop relationships & trust, get Ts to engage in many levels, & nudge some out of comfort zones.
Oh, most definitely. I agree.
: That's a barrier principals need to address. If learning is a priority, are test scores a metric we should prioritize?
Hi ers I've just jumped in hope that's ok? Viv here GC Australia Teacher Leader Learner
great visual. UNLEASH THE TEACHER IN YOU!!
A3 Lead by example. Personalize your learning and model for teachers. Enthusiasm is contagious. Have to show them what's possible!
that is another hurdle to over come. good point.
I agree, but these efforts will only have an impact in a school with a positive culture. https://t.co/1UUiRjphnR
A3: by watching what my teachers' interests, researching new strategies aligned with interests, applying new strat's, developing PD
If archaic staff mtgs. were reinvented, time could be taken from there to help reel in teachers.
A3: Relationships are key. The environment needs 2 include trust, respect, & collaboration. Build on strengths & acknowledge it.
Yessss! https://t.co/oDNsTbBPlk
A3 An opportunity to help is an opportunity to lead. Leadership is not about a title. Leadership is about service.
A3 I am grateful to learn from and with my colleagues IRL and via online literacy lounge of Twitter.
A3: Sometimes Admin stepping into Ts roles. Being in trenches shows honest concern & tools offered R more likely tools needed.
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
A3: I think can answer this best-give them opportunities to lead. Trust them. Let them fail. https://t.co/PEefD1ZFYX
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
A3: "Grow teachers as leaders"?
Um, biting tongue--going to go get my rake and head for the flats.
Cheers, all!
A3 Don't give me a title. Give me some responsibility.
awesome. Makes sense for them to be kept in the loop... and they could learn from some of it too!
Shared decision making; classroom visits; collaborative conversations about sch history/reality/future https://t.co/K9g7cjmLcf
Q3: In what ways do you grow teachers as leaders?
I'll definitely need archive on this one! https://t.co/8yScBNdyIp
I am 6 min behind on my tweets. Can’t keep up! Sorry!!
A3 cont'd: our director also listens to what PD we ask for! Simple but effective
To bad we could not have it every few years! But safety first! ;)
Great question...one that needs to be addressed!
Yes, but we wouldn't do this to our students. We must learn to personalize PD to meet the needs of our Ts. https://t.co/2I19wdTJsH
True fact but sometimes we do have to deal with the required information even though it is same.
powerful perspective! We need to ensure we effectively communicate a Ts worth to them to encourage growth! https://t.co/zwFDyVHV4Y
A3: Sometimes Admin see more in Ts than Ts see in themselves. Encourage and nurture.
A2. Let them choose and then design the training. They are the experts, some just need the confidence!
A3 Give Ts the opportunity to share their favorite lessons, successes, failures, experiences, questions, + plans. Ts need to lead
A2. We use surveys to gather data about T needs and interests. This data is used as we make our PD Plan for skool.
A2 easily adopted effective examples from own practice. Avoid bells and whistles bring star of show!
I see your point; hopefully their tribe includes more global thinkers: Twitter peeps, colleagues in school, regional Ts
YES! These are great opportunities on many fronts. To lead, to showcase, to empower, to show gratitude.
teachers need to be encouraged to take much more risks. Aren't they then modeling good behavior ?
This is one of my goals to! is an expert on & on play.
A2 Absolutely! Flex Scheduling allows for schools to give every S choice while teaching them soft skills. https://t.co/ub2uGUbT9X
A1: Stop treating LEARNERS like clones (Ss & Ts). Meet people where they are & w/ their passions. https://t.co/Pl1ZI6BzC2
A3: many Ts already are natural leaders, but admin needs to empower them & give them opportunities to be a leader. Requires support
: Holy smokes, Jim. This is a great metaphor. What are all the ways our learners are leashed by our systems/structures.
Welcome to we are just starting Q4.
Thanks for joining from Australia! https://t.co/RMMvGxxZR4
Hi ers I've just jumped in hope that's ok? Viv here GC Australia Teacher Leader Learner
So much of school has the effect of making Ss incurious. Can definitely have same effect on Ts.
A4: use of social media tools especially Twitter &
Great way to describe how learning stays with people. Thanks https://t.co/hnSK6qjCAt
Partnerships, collaborative conversations, coaching cycles... all make the learning "sticky".
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
it was scrapped this year - was great in theory, but didn't quite work out
QUESTION 4
https://t.co/ymIr2EmDSd
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
great question. Everyone is trying to balance the results of testing/public perception with pushing learning in schools.
RT Twitter is our "tribe". But how do the other 93% of teachers experience personalized learning?
A3 great leaders understand that they must move from being producers to developers of other leaders. People are our greatest asset
1. Model good leadership 2. By first asssesing strengths and weakness 3. Sharing/teaching those strong areas..cont
we tried in our OSEA chapter this year, wasn't very successful but we are considering trying it again next year
A4. Scheduling time for collaboration not a barrier. Our 16-17 school year allows all grade level Ts to have the same planning.
if we provide teachers agency they will provide it for their students!
How are you? Long time no "chat"
A2 easily adopted effective examples from own practice. Avoid bells and whistles being star of show!
A2. Amen! https://t.co/xvv4DhpGgu
Q2: Being able to personalize learning automatically makes it more relevant to Ts! Don't teach what we already know.
Yes! Great leaders are always looking for ways to nurture & mentor. https://t.co/mewM92RkzF
A3: Sometimes Admin see more in Ts than Ts see in themselves. Encourage and nurture.
my experience in most twitter peeps is a serious amount of groupthink. Not much disagreement in or others.
Many amazing discoveries came as result of Renaissance artists providing STEM context for the world.
A3 Give them the right tools and loosen the reins. Show that you trust them and let them learn from their mistakes.
Absolutely! I applaud for recognizing this and hosting ed chats. https://t.co/f6Z2l9YF8S
For me, has been an incredible personalized learning environment that allows me to self-direct my learning.
Using Ts as coaches and mini-presenters is great! https://t.co/WqasakCUl6
A3. To make leaders: Take Ts out of classrm. Give opp to coach, mini-present, showcase their work, show off their teaching skills.
Build T leaders by inviting them to solve difficult problems with you. Bestow some trust allow them to see the BIG picture.
Q4: Through active participation in chats, organizing and participating in EdCamps, and mentoring teachers F2F.
A3: Jess jumping in late to Growing Ts as leaders takes an environment where risk taking/collaboration is encouraged and respected.
Do we? Think sometimes we do this to our students and forget about it.
the schools I work with do book studies
Those are my interests as well.
A3: We have to get Ts out of comfort zone and into risk zone. That's where growth/learning happens https://t.co/gHMiAMnUcw
A4) Share contacts, network, volunteer to share, be active and engaged. We become our Ss during PDs. Do what we'd want them to do!
“nuture and nudge” - I just love that! So me!
A2. Also want to use differentiated PL and prof reading for Ts. Like special learning for new Ts and lots of choice in a session.
This one is like assuming a talented writer can automatically teach someone to write. https://t.co/TcnKjeduLs
A3 Don't assume that bc a T is a great T, she or he knows how to lead other Ts. Provide mentoring & PD specifically on being a TL.
A4 use of collaborative phase time, Triad observations and peer feedback
This is exactly what makes a GREAT leader! https://t.co/ZGdnK9Z38t
Yes! Great leaders are always looking for ways to nurture & mentor. https://t.co/mewM92RkzF
A3: Sometimes Admin see more in Ts than Ts see in themselves. Encourage and nurture.
Are there lessons for HS level Ss or is it K-8? I've heard of it, glanced at it, but haven't researched it.
A4. Have norms set in place that focus on solution oriented discussion around a common problem of practice. Makes coll. meaningful.
Book club at our school is working. Loving John Gordon. Would like to have 2-4 titles to choose from in future.
Such as teaching about Internet Safety we teach it every year but you just need to be creative in how it is presented.
A4 Ts and Pre-Ts participating in PLN chats can build relationships via collaboration.
I began to thrive after being asked to revise our district's curriculum. https://t.co/UudbiAlywf
A3: T leader growth needs to come from opportunities to do PD, be part of active committees, write curriculum & improve instruction
sounds like the next meeting is planned. Have everyone bring a device, throw a question at them, let them go...
A4: by continuing to work with my colleagues on different activities/projects!
A3 I have a problem. I can't stop talking about what I'm passionate about. But it seems that rubs off on Ts around me. SHARE!
don't bite your tongue. Say it. It's the only way ppl will push their thinking. 😉
A4 Lunch & learns, bagels & books, edcamp style faculty mtgs. A community that celebrates/shares learning is one that will grow.
A4: Modeling a growth mindset and authentic feedback
A3: Give Ts ability to be decision makers without your approval. If they lead an initiative, they should be able to call shots.
Connected educators can improve student learning
shared visions
shared goals
shared beliefs
https://t.co/cZmwgoKHk6
A4 Parental involvement, community outreach, getting neighbors and community leaders involved.
Absolutely! Students love Ts that are growing with them, we must encourage Ts to embrace personal learning. https://t.co/RVYOtWThEF
We celebrate the learning of S's; need to celebrate the learning T's, too; show we are a community of learners at all ages
A4 network of schools has a teacher leader for each developmental group and they have regular teacher meets
Parents can empathize when I explain how I'm pushing the teachers as they are doing w/ students
A3 Sometimes having to ask Ts to step into means the role seems too daunting. Support is needed at all stages.
Gotta get to my run, but will catch up later. Have a great Saturday!
We don't do things "to" teachers...we must do things "with" teachers. Empowering them, supporting them, growing them.
Been one busy busy person, as I know everyone is. Woke up early to let the dog out and thought...oh yeah, is on!
A4: also allowing Ts to leaders in PD leads to collab too.
what are some good PD resources/sites?
create opportunities for aspiring leaders, make time for this to happen. Create a culture of innovation.
And environments where those ideas are supported in word, deed & policy for Ss and Teachers.
A4 Open agendas, bring solutions to challenges, book chats, celebrating each other. https://t.co/nBAc2yWovW
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
A4. Have to celebrate collaboration + team-not individual. Ts need to be celebrated for their collaboration- why? Makes us better
A3. Make them lead learner in an area and have them come back and teach staff. I also have them help me design the PL for the wk
Getting word out and making Ts feel like their wanted at the ‘party’ has been successful. Personal invites, informal setting
A4: The best collaborative groupings are the ones we choose w/o constraints of schedule, time, or place. So,typically unproductive.
It is so uplifting when you are given the power to make change and respected for your input.
for me, it is a place to start, in addition to the research I do. That's what makes it personal for me. 😊
A4the leader must model reflective practice, confidence, humility, perseverance & interest in continuous growth & lifelong learning
A4 For collaboration to happen after PD, we need to find creative ways to carve out time from the almighty clock. (It can be done).
A3 Give them the opportunity to lead. Don't go in with pre-conceived solutions. Teachers are problem solvers. Let them do it
It would be more useful, but wouldn't comply with Michigan law. https://t.co/dW7Y5cpR6x
I get it. What if you could take a first aid course instead? Wouldn't that be more useful?
A4: I support Tleader and administrators in figuring out innovative ways to offer PD to Ts, encouraging personalized like Twitter
: Yup. And that bugs me b/c true learning always loses out in that equation. How do we break that dysfunctional dynamic?
When people are taking new risks make sure you stroke the effort, not just the result. You want risk taking itself to be valued.
A4: build collaboration and community through Voxer chats 2016 look for like-minded people
When presenters R called 4at conferences both local& away, suggest Ts they apply, arm twist. I'm probably annoying
A4: Provide opportunities that allow for collaboration in the first place! As a pre service teacher, chats like these are great!
Yes! What is great about next Sat. Is that after we complete you will make your own! Tons for high school pre made also
Openly accept and praise growth from failure too. Ts need to know Admin supports risks even when they don't work
Does "system" allow teacher to take risks? Ts asked to encourage Ss to take risks but same "lux" not afforded to Ts.
A4: One of our big focuses for next year is on collaboration. Again, it's about choice, voice, empowerment + hint of surprises.
thanks. The phrase that really strikes me every time I hear it is Ss that are "good at playing school."
A4: make connections that will carry on outside the f2f meeting to keep the collab going forward
What if we asked Ss what they wanted their Ts to learn then built campus PL around that? Would prob be much diff picture!
Sorry, there's just no way to get around some of the mandates we have. So, I try to make them as painless as possible.
Ts are expected to meet needs of all Ss in their classrooms, but often expected to learn "one size fit all" time to change that!
A 3&4 I think the way to go is collaboration with all to move ahead with common challenge to achieve - collective teacher efficacy
Critical question. The professional learning itself may be insular, but it has to benefit all stakeholders. https://t.co/fuWphIXw0s
Interesting. How does such open sharing help to strengthen school-parent partnership?
My dogs slept late today and let me sleep until 6😳 https://t.co/foEUkFudkG
Been one busy busy person, as I know everyone is. Woke up early to let the dog out and thought...oh yeah, is on!
A4: encouraging students from all backgrounds/education majors to join and showing that we value their input
A3 T's have been put in a box just like S's. Time to take the lid off.
Absolutely! Leadership Development Programs can help in this regard.
A4 we must learn together, grow together, and work together to support student and adult learning
A3: provide ops to lead and scaffold it. Allow them to lead a skill in a faculty mtg. start small.
A4: Start a book study. Everyone shares ideas and it builds a productive community
A4: When we can choose collab projects for the classrm(either in-house or virtually), for ex, this works. Easy to support and grow.
Also trust Ts to develop their craft. If we aren't self-directing our learning, it will show. https://t.co/u75itIBiKl
Admin needs to encourage taking risks, Ts need to feel safe if they fail, not feel like they'll be reprimanded
A4 More divisions & schools need to catch up on ways to us tech to facilitate easy collaboration & communication.
A4: I hold team co-planning sessions for units..we write a unit together then I follow up with them as individuals/teams
& modify.
Totally agree. Ts have helped me to design our character report card and reporting system. Ts have the best insight
A4: collaboration & community in PD comes back to providing opportunities that Ts need & want in order to improve: voice & choice
A4: Flipped PD helps collab...do reading/studying in own time...when we come together it's reflective, applicable discussion
Therein lies the problem, lol
A4: Carpool. And this is how hatched with amigos and
A4: give Ts the PD topic ahead of time so they can research and discuss prior to the session. Encourage feedback and open thoughts.

Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
Agreed How do we celebrate? Any ideas besides badges? We don't buy into badges. I'm thinking end of year Academy awards
I continually ask them 2 share their work . I'm definitely annoying but lovingly so I hope https://t.co/OufraZotBm
How do you encourage and nudge without being annoying? Just curious...
A4: Collaboration & community are key to pretty much everything in life...learning & growing are at the top of that list!
A4 More divisions & schools need to catch up on ways to use tech to facilitate easy collaboration & communication.
A4: We are giving a snapshot presentation of our teaching. Assignment. Reasons for it. Artifacts of student work. Conversation.
. That's a cool idea! I think you've just given me my next Feedback Friday question! I'll let you know what Ss say!
I feel so deprived, never had a boss on Twitter😫 still encouraging though. https://t.co/MHzQq03gCR
A3 For Ts and Pre-Ts professionalism must be stressed. Daily PD via Twitter and a strong PLN builds teacher leaders.
I also see parents can see e direction sch is taking too. Hopefully that is the direction they agree too 😊
A4: Provide time/space/tools & opportunity for Educators to identify/solve problems— Like a makerspace for PD
A4: Allowing the conversation to continue via and showing a true commitment and professional responsibility to your peers.
A4: Attempt to make genunine connections. Listen more than speak. Learn more than share. Realize I can learn something from anyone
A4: chats are a great way to collaborate! I have been loving getting involved in them
Proud to be part of innovate pd with . , many ways to support learning!
A4 The power of social collaboration is that it can help reveal your school's culture. Thoughtful schools engage & connect.
A4: live it; talk about it; share it; build on it. Repeat. (As often as you can)
A4: We encourage Ts collaborating through CLTs - we learn so much from each other by this job embedded PD
by chipping away at it.More of a push towards e-portfolios and redirecting all the money that is put towards said testing.
I think we sometimes overlook the celebrations. These are so crucial!
A4 build the collective capacity of your staff through a robust & equitable student focused PLC to increase student learning
Q4 providing dedicated times and structures for teachers to collaborate and build authentic community.
Then continue throughout the career w/ high frequency low amplitude learning opportunities.
A4 finding common time for Ts to meet weekly/daily physically or using google hangout, Twitter, or other venue. Make it a priority
A4. in I respond, like & retweet. In sch, I want topic in adv, opportunity to add/subtract, direct connection to improving
A4: According to our teacher data the most requested resource in order to apply new learning is TIME.
no. we're too comfortable pushing ourselves to be uncomfortable.
We need to create culture for Ts NOT only Ss of Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.
A4 build this type of collaboration into the culture of learning. Support with time, tools and empathy of the realities of the work
I love when we recognize the strengths in one another. As Ts we should be looking to grow from colleagues. https://t.co/gjPLQPvO8g
A3. Make them lead learner in an area and have them come back and teach staff. I also have them help me design the PL for the wk
Well said. https://t.co/zxj5GGEt87
A4the leader must model reflective practice, confidence, humility, perseverance & interest in continuous growth & lifelong learning
do the teachers also do the talking themselves? They can model personalized growth by leading the discussion.
A4: Collaboration & communication is key! If you're not working/talking w others PD isn't as valuable. Education is collaborative!
A4: Book clubs! Reading The Innovator's Mindset by and it has sparked great discussion! https://t.co/vpSO0JVBfq
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
Agendas are huge! https://t.co/Z2SBxp2dOK
A4: give Ts the PD topic ahead of time so they can research and discuss prior to the session. Encourage feedback and open thoughts.
how about open office hours for more collaboration between Ts parents and admin? Open calendars
A4: By building trust, sharing expectations we collectively honor & offering guidance and support. Be a resource.
A4: Focus on relationships first! Build community. Collaboration follows naturally.
Ah, a fellow pirate! Love the community. Are you going to ?
Pick something you're passionate about and it's easy to share!
Personal mission to not do this to kids. They shut us out when we don't make it relevant.
And it needs to be mindset/idea focused, not set upon a certain tool.
A4. We give them ample time - 2 plan periods back to back; also model good collaboration by making them part of leadership planning
A4: Starts first with my actions. I can't collaborate or create community if I talk more than listen and aren't willing to learn.
be encouraged! Others can learn a lot by you! Lead the way, be fierce!
A4 Get the Ts involved in the process of design of PDs out in the schools...they know what they need & have solutions to share
Right. If Ts aren't in 1 place, their admin doesn't feel they're 'working'. Need to shake that mentality - our admin has
What do you mean by open agendas?
Offer OnDemand PD for my team in areas they are interested in. Connect with experts through twitter chats https://t.co/dSqDBMMir6
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
Definitely. People will only take risks if they feel supported
A4 as educators we must work together as a collaborative team focused on improving outcomes for all students.
One barrier to collaboration are forced groupings. Why not ask teachers who they'd like to learn alongside?
. Love! Flip the staff meeting!
. Yes. & have much to say about this in the forthcoming Hacking Leadership
. My tongue has calluses on it from judicious chomps--Twitter not nuanced enough for some ideas.
A4: Include all areas teaching in building, positive affirmations, share and give away info, resources, assistance.
A4 Social Media-Twitter. School Apps are growing for that community collaboration piece. We started using that this school year.
Collaboration is hard work, but it can start with just 4 words:
What do you think?
Tools are changing more and more frequently as iteration time shortens. Mindset constantly evolves over tools.
What does authentic feedback look like for your school?
Agree! I run a leadership dev.program for our entry level executive leadership position in Sydney. Dialogue
Safety is always relevant just a matter of how you present it to them.
Ah...time. A difficult commodity to come by. Great idea. https://t.co/VucybdUgPN
how about open office hours for more collaboration between Ts parents and admin? Open calendars
Yes! We have done a few this year. What books would you recommend?
A4: by sharing the ways ppl can learn now: Twitter, Facebook groups, blogging. Encouraging ppl to move out of comfort zones.
A4: encourage peer observation & openness to real suggestions for improving practice.
We need to celebrate the risks that are successful and learning experiences. Never a failure.
Agreed. Some have to be made painless and others can be led in more entertaining & meaningful ways.
Love the idea of lunch and learns. How long are these typically?
Campuses need a culture of thinking/learning 4 all...we're all learners not just the kids
love this! Celebrate small wins! Ts need to know that something might seem small but it's so big! Celebration is key
. Twitter hashtags and are great for these
Collaboration is difficult under any circumstance. Working with people who move you increases motivation and makes it easier.
A4: professional development with teacher presentations; opportunities to get into others classrooms
I've made this my summer project w/ the help of & 's books; I've a of ideas!
I'm bringing the idea to my admin on Monday! 😉. Time to get serious!
A4 to increase student achievement & to have stronger professional practice we must collaborate. It takes a village.
Yes! Prof rdg w/ online & f2f discussion provides opportunities for Ts to learn at pace that works w/ other commitments
It's our responsibility to change that & not let it occur.
A4: Give T time to collaborate, but also provide guidance & input. Need to balance guidance and independence.
A4: Biggest concern I hear from Ts is needing TIME for collab. PLCs are good but not choice, we need choice time for group PD.
A5: I don’t use metrics. I explore what I need to learn and implement what works in my classroom.
I have started using Prodigy Math this past week with my 6th graders. Game based website that they are loving. Anyone us this?
Open agendas are not just developed by the admin/leader of team. They are developed by all on the team.
A4: & are great ways to support collab. for PLCs. Great ideas surface any time, not just during school hours.
love this! School culture trumps all of this! We have to get that right first
have them share f2f, online discussion or twitter chat, so many choices help to give freedom to work on their pace
love that!!! Please explain flip the saff meeting
you'll never get universal agreement on anything (within a school either!) But everyone should know the goals.
I'm struggling. "Empowering" them, "making" them TLs, "giving" them choice...still feels like controlling Ts by giving, taking away
A4) Sharing work, ideas, resources, so important, helping Ts see their greatest resource is other Ts in district
We build this in to the process of Ts taking PL they feedback to theirs peers during POD meetings
Can you reframe Q5 for me? I'm only 1 cup of coffee in and I'm not sure what you're looking for.
When I help teachers outside comfort zone, important 2 tell me. Won't stop but have more empathy. https://t.co/zVQKFLaOdi
A3: We have to get Ts out of comfort zone and into risk zone. That's where growth/learning happens https://t.co/gHMiAMnUcw
A3 Let them play off their ideas and turn them into actions. Let the dissatisfied work on solutions.
Admin and experienced teachers need to be open about their own failures/challenges too https://t.co/WjrHhuikCq
Admin needs to encourage taking risks, Ts need to feel safe if they fail, not feel like they'll be reprimanded
That's awesome. Can you share the padlet?
we expect it of our students and we are supposed to be the model. seems like the right thing
last to get teachers to become great leaders you must model
A3 Support their endeavors! Build teachers up by recognizing and building upon their strengths! Promote their abilities!
I have office hours open for Ts and meet with my admin once a month to assist in getting us all on the same page
Yes! Do you use any sort of protocols? We use the one for instructional rounds. We are also shadowing Ss. Eyeopening
Q4 Offer "Ed Camps" we're teachers lead teachers on topics they have requested. Informal conversations=Collaboration.
A3 it depends on admin. Had a P who welcomed it and current P not so much
what a great idea. Might just ask…
harnessing those talents is the key!
Yes asking for, valuing and implementing Ts ideas https://t.co/PB27ekO05e
Collaboration is hard work, but it can start with just 4 words:
What do you think?
A5: Metrics? No, PD needs relevance, immediacy, buy in, and continuing
Reach out to your PLN and I'm sure you would have a great trove of resources that come highly recommended.
We try to tell what happened in our head as we experienced the text/presentation. Just the highlights... https://t.co/JIZ6ja5GER
What does authentic feedback look like for your school?
I will be teaching a summer class but talk of it getting moved a week...so maybe!
Agreed. There has to be a better platform than clicking through just to comply, though.
A4: Coteaching in interdisciplinary courses models the value of collaborating for students by bringing together varied perspectives
It's a great day today....it's Saturday!
Virtual helps avoid echo chamber effect in your own building. Any HS want to do this next year?
A5: T feedback and reflection should drive the PD cycle. Ask Ts: what worked and what do you need?
How do you assess there is learning when you personalize PD? https://t.co/ussP4zdCq6
Can you reframe Q5 for me? I'm only 1 cup of coffee in and I'm not sure what you're looking for.
Thanks for an awesome first ! I will definitely be back in the future! Time to start my busy Saturday have a great day everyone! 😊
much like Ss model, Ts have questions to explore before meeting and use mtg to collab
I like the F2F better than online disc brd; have used both - Discussion has always been richer in person. Thoughts?
A4. My entire staff has a Twitter acct. We chat online as well as in person. Collaboration happens all day! Must be open to learn
Peer observation would be wonderful! Create a sense of collaborative community. https://t.co/KH7hBjnzC7
A4: encourage peer observation & openness to real suggestions for improving practice.
PL/CPD needs to be informed and sustainable, it also needs to personalised by knowing every teacher. https://t.co/upmWZMmPTi
I know the question...just need it rephrased. Are we meaning measurement of prof learning?
is now trending in USA, ranking 1
Scheduling is the first place "it's always been done that way" needs to change. Let's get innovative ! https://t.co/NteD3pIswA
2 metrics for building a great school:
1 students before policies
2 better before convenient
A4: Give Ts TIME to collaborate, and give Ts power to help direct school culture. Admins need to trust! https://t.co/byO1GwsNM4
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
I will! I have a couple of things I am adding, Lisa, but then I will tweet it to you!
Peer obs can be so valuable in our often isolated profession. Visits to other schools is also great! https://t.co/3RPDK2rvgP
A4: encourage peer observation & openness to real suggestions for improving practice.
& other times like training a muscle we must be broken down before being made stronger
A5: PD is about having a growth mindset. How are you going to grow yourself & then your students/school?
Maybe people just need to start realizing that you can not put numbers on learning. In any form. How would that change what we do?
A5: S data, perceptions, & TONS of deep discussion & reflection, journals, keep good notes on Ts learning journey & progression!
So many great ones! Depends on needs: Teach Like a Pirate, DIY Literacy, Amplify, Simple Starts, Good to Great Teaching
But there must be some indication, evidence, a sign, something that shows learning?
https://t.co/brlzbXerkY
A5: Metrics? No, PD needs relevance, immediacy, buy in, and continuing
you should come to the Flex Summit this summer! Early bird registration ends today!
A5: I don’t but I will this summer. Thanks!
“In order for it be effective, it has to be collegial, it has to be ongoing, and it has to be job-embedded.”
A5: Bottom line is S achievement. Purpose of PL is to increase it. We have to make sure it works, it's implemented with fidelity.
NM..got it now https://t.co/PQQaeUID6E
I know the question...just need it rephrased. Are we meaning measurement of prof learning?
A4: When current P is not so nurturing, take it upon urself to find someone who is, and lock on watch, listen, learn.
I feel that every T says this. Yet it rarely happens. I don't know why we aren't given time for this https://t.co/QWmo6aFAe2
A4: Biggest concern I hear from Ts is needing TIME for collab. PLCs are good but not choice, we need choice time for group PD.
Hope to see you there. One of my favorite PDs from last summer!
A5 what is the impact on teacher performance and student outcomes? Start there.
. Thanks for joining this morning.
A5: Staff started designing personal prof development plans this year. Fall, winter, spring time to reflect & discuss them.
Including families and community. Professional learning should parallel the goals they have for their kids. https://t.co/NZIzRa5qKB
A4 to increase student achievement & to have stronger professional practice we must collaborate. It takes a village.
A5: Reflection is a key piece. It pushes our thinking one step further.
110& Agreed! https://t.co/U2ZHQEfCVl
Agreed. There has to be a better platform than clicking through just to comply, though.
A5: The metrics for personalized PD should be your own sense of accomplishment, personal goals met, trial and error.
Shared w/ Ts and they LOVE it. Our Ss can't get enough of it. They choose it on weekends, breaks, centers.
A5: Metrics for PL? The products that are created in the classroom as a result of the personalized work.
hahaha I welcome the day🙏🏽
I always share how I dropped my Comp Sci course in college b/c I thought spreadsheets were useless. Not always a 'techie'
Through what you see in the classroom..true PD has been implemented, not just absorbed https://t.co/qbp0euXMsw
How do you assess there is learning when you personalize PD? https://t.co/ussP4zdCq6
Can you reframe Q5 for me? I'm only 1 cup of coffee in and I'm not sure what you're looking for.
I would so love that even in elem schools, we are so much better together https://t.co/GF0fstlWG3
A4: Coteaching in interdisciplinary courses models the value of collaborating for students by bringing together varied perspectives
A5 As I am working w students and colleagues, I often measure the smiles. Best measurement is when
happy to be here! It was great!
If it develops organically, is positive, is on Ts own time, there isn’t a need for evidence
TT USA 16:12

This works for teachers/students & admin/teachers. Success is found in a culture of trust/respect. https://t.co/yvdsICajA5
A3: Relationships are key. The environment needs 2 include trust, respect, & collaboration. Build on strengths & acknowledge it.
some measurement or evidence of personalized learning. https://t.co/8KpHNvqUaK
I know the question...just need it rephrased. Are we meaning measurement of prof learning?
Or maybe have Ts attend an edcamp led by Ss? You can see what they want to learn & how they learn it best.
A1&2 If we are trying to teach sts to take ownership of their learning so as teachers we need to do what don't know how to do
this is tricky because people make time for things that they feel are important. Not a lot of time for the gym, but I go.
When you put it like that - it's perfect!
We use a Notices and Wonders protocol; Also focus on what student work & action; Always focus on praise. How about u?
A2 1) it is important 2find out what Ts are most interested in developing 2) offer multiple sessions
I am Reading, in Defense of Read Aloud, Daily 5, Reading Strategies Book, The Teacher You Want to Be, etc.
A5: Shared ownership. It's a collective effort. WE get to be better at our craft. That's awesome! https://t.co/yHZa6gsQ7M
A5: PD is about having a growth mindset. How are you going to grow yourself & then your students/school?
A5: I like when we are presented w/ several new ideas & asked to work on what will help our Ss most. Provide feedback on progress.
this is hard for me too! Walking that line of nudge vs pushy!
A1) It looks like vibrant classrooms being led by excited teachers. https://t.co/DMeDlIvO73
Q1: What does Personalized Professional Learning look like in practice? How do you know it when you see it?
. Are you enjoying your first chat so far, Juliet?
A5 depends on PL if WS focus, use action research with regular discussion/feedback, regular data collection to identify improvement
A5: It's dangerous not to use metrics. RISK: I tried formative assessments and they took too long, so I'm not going to do it.
A5: a question from across the Pacific: what is the obsession with measuring everything? Is that what your testing regime has done?
I would love to connect with some of them to see how they are using it in their classrooms.
Teach Like A Pirate is my teaching bible. Love the community. I'll have to check out some of these other titles!
sorry i am late i was driving and checking into in Philly
A5: Asking the right questions, observations of Ts, and using data collected in planning follow up activities
Yes! Ts should trust and seek feedback from peers...makes everyone aware of big picture https://t.co/5qwmCM5vW3
Peer observation would be wonderful! Create a sense of collaborative community. https://t.co/KH7hBjnzC7
A4: encourage peer observation & openness to real suggestions for improving practice.
Also through reflection Encourage Ts to blog about what they've learned & implemented. Builds sharing
A5: I personally have not heard of metrics in PD. I just look forward to learning and implementing new ideas from PD!
A4:Support Ts in expanding network-to attend conferences, work with colleagues in other grades, disciplines, buildings, districts.
If it is used for our profession then I'd disagree. There is tons of evidence from my personal PD in my job
https://t.co/oUu5c96ZUe
If it develops organically, is positive, is on Ts own time, there isn’t a need for evidence
Agree, but s/t its hard to f2f b/c of family & other commitments. imp to provide alt in addition https://t.co/sYfgAchza9
I like the F2F better than online disc brd; have used both - Discussion has always been richer in person. Thoughts?
It's all about how you establish & nurture a knowledge building culture for Ss & Ts.
We often use portfolio outcomes driven by project choice for teachers in our work. Allow autonomy!
A5: It’s all about student achievement before vs. after the initiatives/educator learning.
It's that HOW piece that's important. Those sort of reflective convos move learning forward.
Flex sched has time for personalized pd, changes , promotes Ts & Ss . Learn at Flex Summit! https://t.co/qJbIHZYb2o
A5: Were you able to integrate your PD experience into your classroom or educational practices.
reflection/evidence powerful to look back on growth. I have a T presenting next week on Personalized Progression!
love this idea. Tapping the power of Twitter for a common cause!!
right - I think encouraging Ts to be risk takers is apart of culture (district & school). Grateful mine encourages
That is all it takes....get everyone in a platform and go! has much to offer all global educators. https://t.co/HYBhb9lCDo
A4. My entire staff has a Twitter acct. We chat online as well as in person. Collaboration happens all day! Must be open to learn
How do you make sure it's implemented with fidelity? https://t.co/NXDx4qSFK8

A5: Reflection with the intent to improve and develop
A5: We measure effectiveness of PD & relevance thru google survey, open discussions, engagement & follow up
Yes! Some great choices. I can tell what your passion is in a single tweet!
It'd be wonderful to choose some of our PD time instead of always given directives. It would increase engagement.
I found that some Ts need the face to face connection, informal setting. My co founder of iWIN go to them
District leadership and professional teachers need a clear metric to measure growth against. https://t.co/CVgL46RIGw
A5cont: We need data to be sure that the learning is effective, but c'mon. We don't need all this unnecessary documentation.
A5) Reflection as always, is key, how will this benefit my Ss, did this assist my learning & theirs
A5: If you know your Ts, you'll see the growth/learning/change when you're visiting classrooms. The Q is "do you know your Ts?"
We use Daily 5 Math or workshop math. Tech. is a center rotation.
A5 we try to focus on evidence based PL so metrics is important
Yes!! Thanks so much for asking! Lots going on- trying to follow it all :)
. why not? We all learn & use learning to become better educators. What's the sign, the something that demo's that.
as a math teacher, I absolutely agree with you. But I would like to see numbers from different areas.
I like how a portfolio focus/question keeps me revisiting an idea/skill throughout a school year. Continuity.
A5. Monitor what you expect; Peer & Admin LWs, Feedback w focus on positive growth; And build trust through common learning
If only there were more hours in a day! Any you'd recommend?
A5- teachers send in what they want for PD and schedule is built through those ideas as well as teacher leaders determine needs
With effective peer observation the knowledge of one becomes the knowledge of all.
YES! What I am starting to focus more on lately. https://t.co/WTUoee85Cy
A5: Reflection is a key piece. It pushes our thinking one step further.
A4: shared accountability for outcomes. This is best when held between peers. If learning is shared, efforts must be too.
A5: measuring PD is necessary so we aren't all wasting our time pretending 2 listen 2 a message we already know.
This is fabulous! Totally taking the idea to my principal!
A5 Maybe we're too caught up in the idea of need to assess learning right away after PD.
A5. Observations,T/ S feedback, Ts use/lack of use the new learning in class. Ts share how they have applied learning in instruc.
Nice! Let's make sure we hear from in the book 😉
A3: As an admin, you should stay the course with your PD. Do what's best. Keep the learning alive. https://t.co/2iM8U3IxiX
A3 it depends on admin. Had a P who welcomed it and current P not so much
A5 Growth in Ts (& Ss for that mater) tends to occur over time, in increments not easily measured right away.
A5)Instead of "I can" statements, Ts frame "I will" statements on how they will integrate learning into classroom & provide evid
A5: Application and then reflection. How did it go? Did Ss benefit from the implementation of what presented in lesson.
why does it need to be demonstrated? to whom?
. ...but remember, we are in a profession where we are told what to teach, so....you know, the apple doesn't fall far....
some learners might relate to numbers to understand their growth. Others wouldn't. Multiple measures are best.
Sorry I need to drop out early this morning. Have a wonderful wknd
YES! Unfortunately, many are housekeeping tasks which can be shared virtually. Time is precious. Use it to grow!
A5 Ongoing collaborative conversations, sharing literacy snapshots, artifacts, stories... only "measurements" needed that's
Job-embedded PD. Classroom Learning Labs, admin feedback for unannounced walkthroughs, analyze S work in PLCs.
A5: reflections on personal practice & data is what I'm implementing actually working. Are Ss/Ts learning & engaged w/ the material
A5: teacher reflection and implementation- what was the take away; how will it benefit students
Participating in helps us become better advocates for Ts , ourselves and others, we are so much better together
Gr8 point. Can't we just celebrate the prof learning! https://t.co/NpBJg1AekT
A5: a question from across the Pacific: what is the obsession with measuring everything? Is that what your testing regime has done?
A3: Not everyone is equipped to lead. Ultimately your goal should be to support encourage all Ts to strengthen/own their teaching
A5: My personalized, choice, on-my own PD has improved me as an educator. Evidence is in new things I do & things I do better
I love the idea of reading/learning/reflecting together. Engaging conversation to spark a growth mindset. https://t.co/MnwVgyuicV
A4: Book clubs! Reading The Innovator's Mindset by and it has sparked great discussion! https://t.co/vpSO0JVBfq
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
why not? because if I've learned it. I have. demonstrating it doesn't make it learned.
if it is going to be counted for PD Points...structured rubrics demonstrating understanding...is the best idea
Do you not have set PL time each wk? We made that part of our weekly schedule
A5: Student achievement. Reflect on their eportfolios. What worked and what didn't.
Evidence of integration and growth!
good character is the half of faith.
I know. I think it’s b/c district still give us “have to”s for our PD time then there’s no time left.
have a great weekend - time to start dad'ing :)
A4: Seeing more and more of this for staff PD. Seeing great results from T's. Powerful, impactful. Nice! https://t.co/GHW1lPjeVu
Q4 Offer "Ed Camps" we're teachers lead teachers on topics they have requested. Informal conversations=Collaboration.
A5: Lots of feedback! Survey, open door to hear thoughts, monitoring progress, accountability. How can we build this w/o threat
How does this look for you? Surveys?
A5: PL isn't just PD Days. What about coaching, classroom learning labs, instructional rounds, PLCs? JOB-EMBEDDED is most effective.
All Ts won't implement immediately. So it's hard to measure. Helps to use Individual Learning Plans for Ts
Thx for the nod & link to videos of us empowering teachers through PD in
A5 A successfully implemented rubric identifies best practices & provide ongoing opportunities for reflection, mentoring, coaching.
because someone said it doesn't make it gospel. I reiterate, why?
Any documentation that Teacher Leadership has significantly increased student achievement?
I know what you mean! If you love , you should check out by , PureGenius by
PD has to be a continual...can't be a once a done event or then there is no basis for fidelity https://t.co/B0mxFe4nEb
How do you make sure it's implemented with fidelity? https://t.co/NXDx4qSFK8
A5: Bottom line is S achievement. Purpose of PL is to increase it. We have to make sure it works, it's implemented with fidelity.
. if as an educator you become better, more effiicient, effective, involved in our profession then you are demo'ing
That's new to me. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
How do you track lack of us of new learning? Does your team all try simialr strategies @ same time?
allows us to elevate our voice and voices of our colleagues!
you mean they each have their own account? I love this. Anyone not ready for that? How did you get everyone on board?
Trust being the biggest focus of the relationships and community to fuel collaboration. https://t.co/B6CXBuQqR9
A4: Focus on relationships first! Build community. Collaboration follows naturally.
A5: After PD, I look for my teaching to change. What am I doing differently? And blogging to reflect on it has been huge for me.
I am a huge believer of this! Being supported while trying something new is🔑
A5: Small goal setting prior to taking part?
A5: Reflection of some sort - immediate and over time. What is the impact of the work we are doing? How has PD changed your work?
This is why schools should share their stories. Tell the great things happening in school. Make learning visible for all
Do you make these visible anywhere? Wonder what visible "I Will" would do?
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 40 [14:16]
The powers that be ask for feedback but never use it to inform THEIR pd choices. Isn't that what good teaching is?
A5 love the Twitter chats I am part of and can develop these at the school and district level would be powerful for mission/beliefs
Tom Murray says everyone needs to be invited to the party, make Ts feel wanted and welcome
Surveys are start, but there has to be evidence it is used in classroom and transfers to student learning.
I'll add them to my summer reading list. Thanks!
Brilliant simplification of the most important part to successful work as a team. https://t.co/nEqPnJgGDQ
Collaboration is hard work, but it can start with just 4 words:
What do you think?
: is now trending WorldWide, ranking 40 [14:16]
A5:Learning/Reflection Logs work well, great for self-assessing growth as well as Exit Slips or surveys.
A5: All about the reflection. What worked and what did not. Adapt and adjust. Love this! https://t.co/N6NyFCb0wj
A5: teacher reflection and implementation- what was the take away; how will it benefit students
A5: Did the Ts ATTEND PD? Easy to measure. Did the Ts DEVELOP? Look at what's happening in the classroom - do you see it?
That’s been a good way for Ts to collab for us too - was a great book for discussion!
A5 If we just mean "evidence" of PD rather than assessing its impact...teacher reflections (collab or indiv) can do the trick.
What does the reflection look like? Does your admin team meet w u to discuss?
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
You don't have to measure everything, lol. Plant the seed. Let it grow. It will:)
A5: Most T's are sophisticated enough to determine their own metrics and provide evidence of growth if asked to do so.
Enjoy the weekend and extra time for reading, writing and learning! Thanks to all for another energizing !
I once hear Inspect what you Expect...or Expect what you Inspect https://t.co/Z0hwxm1FHk
A5. Monitor what you expect; Peer & Admin LWs, Feedback w focus on positive growth; And build trust through common learning
That's new to me too! I'd recommend Making Thinking Visible too.
Love to know more about classroom learning labs. What does this look like? How did u start it?
We share "small moves learned" & "next step" we will take. Articulate & apply.
metrics are external control. Indicative of an ego driven system
I so agree Connie and the research also agrees https://t.co/HDrDBv8Pzt
A5: PL isn't just PD Days. What about coaching, classroom learning labs, instructional rounds, PLCs? JOB-EMBEDDED is most effective.
Yes. Things I think are interesting I share in a monthly newsletter. Their choice to check it out
https://t.co/GEulE64XoF
Then you share your PD with other Ts?
right! We do have one PD day where we get to choose a half day session and Ts can lead. So that’s a start…
so if learning is ipso facto demonstrated, what sign/indication were you looking for?
Takes leap of faith to stand before bunch of teachers and propose something completely different in the way of a "staff meeting."
A4-Well used (and trainted) instructional coaches. But it takes a culture of trust AND time to develop.
Exactly!Job embedded yields biggest results! The work out Instructional Coaches do in schools is impactful https://t.co/l9MJRgb8YF
A5: PL isn't just PD Days. What about coaching, classroom learning labs, instructional rounds, PLCs? JOB-EMBEDDED is most effective.
I think a google doc or would provide access and visibility beyond the T and admin for sure
I would imagine the PD was specific to you? IS it school wide or personal?
A5.p2 Goal setting- I need this because.. I will.. I'll I know I achieved.. For next time..
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
Why do we have to be so formal about PD? The informal, off site, everyone is welcome lets it happen naturally
What's the deal with ? Doesn't the question have enough macs? Who ARE these people?
love the way you think! This is crucial! https://t.co/WJE6m8eAcL
A3: Build T leaders by bringing them into strategic side of admin. Bestow some trust, be vulnerable yourself.
I always forget about Voxer!! Also, is using in a cool, daily tip for Ts format. https://t.co/6xRAMyAfgk
A4: & are great ways to support collab. for PLCs. Great ideas surface any time, not just during school hours.
What you say is so true, Ts really have to believe it's important to them &their Sts they have 2believe PD is important
A5 Are you more proficient now then when you first started? Can you prove it?
When Ts say they are trying something new, I say when? Let me come to! I want to be part of the process.
and probably productivity, staff morale, and the culture as well.
Yup. And the same with students. Personalized means THEY'RE DOING, period. https://t.co/msspmwFf6D
I'm struggling. "Empowering" them, "making" them TLs, "giving" them choice...still feels like controlling Ts by giving, taking away
A5 Whatever the metrics, they need to be both short & long term. Can’t just be one-time snapshot
Transparency! We try strategies, then meet to discuss. Some Ts don't use the strategies, some do we learn from each other.
Can anyone assist? https://t.co/EvDhXgboD1
What kind of feedback forms do you use for peer observation? The trick for me has been making it reflective for the observer.
Just had first Twitter chat! It's been better than an CPD PD course ever! Feel energised! Tx to all! See you all next Sat!
Admin sometimes wants to measure effectiveness of strategies & compare data. Not everything is measurable
Reflection is HUGE! But you can't force true, deep reflection on personal practice. How do we encourage? https://t.co/fIzlOVnipf
A5: Reflection with the intent to improve and develop
We have that and some grade level cohorts but the full days of pd are killers.
Sorry I'm jumping in late! Dee from NJ, STEM teacher! Squeezing 10 min in of
There's a big difference between being "active" and being meaningfully & purposefully engaged.
we need to inspire Ts to be independent Learners so they can model to Ss so they can decide how to meet the standards
I am a huge reflector. I reflect independently, with a colleague, and with my Ss.
Checked in for so excited!! Will catch you next week :)
A5 I love blogging for my own reflection. I just don't do it often enough
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
A5: Think Q5 was misunderstood, mod.Ts want personalized PD but can't have it w/o welcoming Admins attempt to measure previous PDs.
A5: We have embraced a great model of PD for staff. PD for T's by T's. Follow to more. Amazing responses to approach.
A5 it's about what impact has it had on the students / measure growth of learning
Natalie... completely worth your time to explore! Makes ALL the difference. HIGHLY recommend CLLs.
We have been putting new PL goals on our doors so when people come in, they know what we have been working on
agreed. Just not one number.
A5-Data will change. Students will change. Curricu will change. PD around
1/ Same. But mine's almost always outside ed. Doing now. Homesteading. Venture math. Writing. MY passions.
Q4. By being flexible and accessible
A5: if the learning is personalised, the metrics should be too
A6 Attend an and get on twitter.
A6: Sharing the experience, growth, and PPD methods that I use with others!
yes. Great conversation starter and easy read
Any particular resources u would suggest?
Ppl in a supervisory position have a right and responsibility to expect concrete outcomes.
Exactly! Watch for announcement about PatioPd this summer.
It is a process. Nothing is 100%. Learn from it, adapt and revise for next time. Reflect! https://t.co/cVjvLByFaK
How do you make sure it's implemented with fidelity? https://t.co/NXDx4qSFK8
A5: Bottom line is S achievement. Purpose of PL is to increase it. We have to make sure it works, it's implemented with fidelity.
This is where the person being observed cre8s the form. U provide feedback they R looking 4.
Get tired of idea I must "prove" i got "something" out of PD to someone else. Is PD to help me, or to make someone else happy?
Kind of like the power of These seem to be so much more engaging. https://t.co/e3Da8MSr3R
Why do we have to be so formal about PD? The informal, off site, everyone is welcome lets it happen naturally
AND... there's a big difference between being actively engaged in a PD and implementing it in your class. https://t.co/Q89Gr0QXLl
There's a big difference between being "active" and being meaningfully & purposefully engaged.
2/ It all morphs & percolates into things that make me better, and kids know I practice lessons I preach. They work
A6: finding out when edcamps are offered in your local area, great way to network with colleagues and share ideas.
same here. Sometimes tech focus, sometimes wellness, other times just good ideas.
and for the person or company that "discovers" that balance, they will win big...
A6 Twitter chats, EdCamps, Voxer groups (start with a book discussion and you'll be hooked). https://t.co/ahlIHsipgC
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
same! Offer a second set of eyes and an opportunity to reflect together. Plus I get to talk to Ss!
Question 6
LAST QUESTION https://t.co/1xxp9TXn6u
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
A5 Australian Professional Standards for Teachers https://t.co/topiusJHOA used by school&system PD plans & by Ts. Can be measured
Sometimes that's the best PD. Discussions at lunch!
that is awesome...how did you get that to happen?
A5: We value the power of sharing. How you demonstrate that is up to the T be it through blogging, presenting, tweeting. Share!
A5: I don't need to measure how much PD you attended...I want to see differences in your mindset & instruction
A6 Making PD Stick by +Leading Professional Learning by are two amazing books.
Yes love google survey quick and efficient! https://t.co/9MLP4ePY4d
A5: We measure effectiveness of PD & relevance thru google survey, open discussions, engagement & follow up
A6: Highly recommend Edcamp, , and of course professional books and journals. WE are each other's best resource!
Was on road traveling. Please storify today's Can't wait to read all the goodness from you all and
I think in that way we show an even more significant example of how their voice matters in their education
B4 I forget, so many new follows today, & will reciprocate, just keeping up w/chat! TY love to connect!! Awesome Discussion on
Same here. I have some great colleagues that give me honest feed back. https://t.co/BzUlVJGDKE
I am a huge reflector. I reflect independently, with a colleague, and with my Ss.
yay! Has this gotten a lot of parents on too?
I think it depends on what the PD is.PLCs have measures, but for a “try this” new program, either they do or don’t.
A5: Ask: How has this PD changed your classroom? Look to create positive changes in mindset that become a better environment for Ss
I agree, when reflections and feedback are built in, it leads to more indepth discussions.
Gotta run ... My mt bike and the trails are calling! :) Happy Saturday.
personalized learning + standardized results = standardized learning. For teachers and students both.
A6: It's crucial to join chats like this, go to EdCamps, read blogs, connect & grow your PLN, read & share with colleagues.
A5: Reflection & transfer. Did the professional learning make it to the students? We are here for them. When we grow, they grow.
A6: providing a list of relevant opportunities or resources for PD and allowing the teachers to choose which ones work for them
A6: Resources that help with personalizing PD is running an Edcamp-style pd, encouraging others 2 join Twitter and collaborate
A6. Connect with Ts outside of where you live social media is great for that! Use , , blog and share on SM.
We are definitely on the same page here. When we let that question guide us, we're more effective as Ts.
Ours depend on what Ts offer - from tech to yoga has been available!
Exactly! PL is a better way of envisioning this
A6: I share via Twitter, email ℅-workers, present sessions on developing a PLN at conferences, & lead role in prof. orgs.
Hmm... Can you give me an example?
A6: I use to develop personalized professional development. A T can even put their own interests in there
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 40 [14:16]
I highly recommend this book for any educator who wants to get connected and use effectively. https://t.co/sDrmeihwop
what a simple, yet powerful question. The person asking needs to have thick skin incase the responses are negative.
Twitter as PD:
network
reflect
share
grow
learn
A6: Will stalk this question!
<\:0p New to PPL. Looking for ideas!
Great question. We use Danielson's rubric&have to bring evidence for 3 preselected categories at the end of the yr..
Either way, change is how I measure learning. If I end up inspired to change my teaching, that's good PD! If not, well...
A6: Most important resources is your eyes and your ears. Be guided by what Ts want, and not what you want to give them.
By seeing the results in change/improvement w/ how Ts teach.
Ok ... Who's going to bring one of these Twitter-famous "edcamps" you all rave about to Australia??
A6) I know there is a Twitter pg with a list of conferences, edcamps, right? Can't think of name 🤔
Hope you are enjoying it.
A6: During PD use utilize google forms, good ol followup and feed back.
Oh man, this is something I was hoping to come across. Thanks for sharing!
PLCs would look to improve student math scores on a given unit. My Twitter PD aimed to get Ts on Twitter (some are!)
A6) Connect with the professional organizations in your region. is full of tchr leadership opports-
Have a post discussion on how their experience will influence their classroom tomorrow. Then followup
We ARE our best resources! Growing our PLN is the best resource! https://t.co/mCKJENREEj
A6: Highly recommend Edcamp, , and of course professional books and journals. WE are each other's best resource!
Ask questions, provide time to write, share. Interesting assignments + artifacts of student work https://t.co/ksqZPe1Y09
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
A6 Share how you have grown though the process of PPD and what you did. Share by example
Great question! I'll be going through every A6 for this week's later today! https://t.co/nqisaNpIr4
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
that attitude supposes the omnipotence of admin, leads to stagnation, undermines community
For real! I was going to say this! RT :You don't have to measure everything, lol. Plant seed. Let it grow. It will:)
A6: The desire to learn on one's own must come from within. Engaging in ed chats or private groups are effective.
Bringing together leadership, curriculum, instruction, digital ecosystem, and professional learning...Digital Convergence is key!!
I hate to use pictures from the Holocaust, but I am sick & tired of haters of comparing to Nazis https://t.co/HvIc8jyvrM
A6: Use Twitter to collect subject-area experts. U don't need to know all. But it's gr8 to know ppl who do. https://t.co/GswlvnhHOr
Question 6
LAST QUESTION https://t.co/1xxp9TXn6u
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
that's an excellent point. Maybe having a T who can keep you accountable & be a mentor/partner to think/share with
A free trial of was used by certain grades- I didn’t measure number of Ss or achievement w/ it.
On my shelf/wish list: Mindsets&Moves, Purposeful Play, Who's Doing the Work, A Mindset for Learning
Too much of our PD is one shot. Lacks continuity and investment in a growth model.
I love chats like this! Ideas everywhere. If you do what you did, you will get what you got! Change is AWESOME!!
An idea. What if Ss were not data points? How would we see what we r doing? Engagement?! https://t.co/pwtnbTzKWw
A5-Data will change. Students will change. Curricu will change. PD around
A6 My timeline! Also, when presenting something I have a gfolder of resources and the presentation to share https://t.co/tj7IgO8z2g
Q6: What resources can you share to help others become more effective providing Personalized Professional Learning opportunities?
You bet -- excited to see what we can learn together!
Or, in non-teaching time, just drop into a few classes, in the company of a fellow reflector.
and no one gets played off the stage. ;)
No one is talking imposing anything. We are talking personalized learning and how it improves us as Eds. https://t.co/ihrfRMCkgb
if admin imposes what the system should be, then responsibility for failure is solely theirs
Sadly similar in many ways to the school day emphasis on product over process & passion.
in Mercer County, NJ is hiring! HS librarian, MS vocal music, HS Photo/TV, & more! Apply here: https://t.co/JFbD485t7A
A6: They need to be connected. To other Admins and to their own team.
This statement needs to be framed and hung on the wall! Love this! https://t.co/Dz723m16eK
If your words get another person to reflect, consider, contemplate, wrestle or disagree with, then your words have influence.
We use Rose, Bud, Thorn technique it builds in a structure to push even further!
took the words right out of my mouth👏
Follow ,provide lens into work of other Ts, leaders, etc. transparency can help us all grow
A4 Model then allow time for Ts to engage. Also bring along those who may not be comfortable with tech! Yes..we still have a few.
Our team is gearing up to have a voxer book study this summer. https://t.co/V5lxLxI9Ce
A6: Highly recommend Edcamp, , and of course professional books and journals. WE are each other's best resource!
Never let you down in front of hurdles of life,Stand up again and start your business with and get
A4: Be part of as many learning opportunities as I can, participate fully, learn, apply, share, REPEAT. . . https://t.co/y7Oi3lcYi4
Q4: How do you support collaboration and community in your professional learning opportunities?
Personalized Learning begins with giving the learner a voice! Tech levels the playing field https://t.co/MZvc5lN2gh
Time must be built into the day for PD and collaboration. Sound admins know that and folow through. Many don't.
I'm actually creating an online portfolio and will have screenshots to serve as artifacts! So, yes!!
great chat again
Now off to soccer games! Have a great Saturday.
Really like this! 😀 https://t.co/sFOrGyWFou
Collaboration is hard work, but it can start with just 4 words:
What do you think?
I have it &love it! ...highly recommend as we encourage Ts & leaders to explore Twitter as PD https://t.co/wxqS502ViV
I feel the same way! https://t.co/lRHZqK2WQO
A5: My personalized, choice, on-my own PD has improved me as an educator. Evidence is in new things I do & things I do better
Interested in more of this conversation? Join & for on Tues 8pm CST Thanks for a great
Twitter Chats/Book studies/ reflection time with teachers face to face/ Ted Talk conferences. Networks of Educators is so powerful
thanks for the reminder - keep meaning to check out !
Special thank to the for guest moderating another amazing today.
We are doing. Agree! Foster culture of pursuing & connecting to grow!
demanding outcomes and metrics isn't an imposition?
Let us know how that goes. Share reflections!
How was this morning? Sorry I woke up late!
I have a flipchart (activinspire) that I'd be happy to share. DM me if interested!
A6 PD crucial for all: Ts Ss admins. By univ level, far too many Ss have lost creative thinking they had as little children.
positive peer pressure is very effective. Worked when we were kids as well. Great point. The follow up is key.
I agree! When I did Behind the Glass observations for Rdg Recovery observers took nts about their takeaways https://t.co/QU6iCNfHVU
My thinking about it has always been the other way around, i.e. it's more valuable for the observer.
Only if they start lecturing ;)
Think there is a model & you could create one!
Q6: So much PL happens through tech- not everyone is comfortable. Time to learn by doing, w/ someone to answer q's, really matters.
Much thanks to for guest moderating
Thanks to my co-mods:
AND HUGE THANKS TO OUR PLN!
Hoped it wouldn't be just a British thing. Forgive my ignorance! No preparation (PPA in England) time at all?
A2 base it on current relate to issues and let teachers drive the conversations
I use #'s, but we're nuts w complexity/usage. In biz, I use A/B test. In ed, 4 tiers of stuff I don't understand
I agree to a certain extent, u dont want the learning environmnt 2b so informal that its destractn
Teachers demand metrics and outcomes for students.
A6 in PDs share ways that Ts can go deeper and learn even more on their own
Thank you for a great chat ! PLN summer may be the best time for PPL! Use what you learned here today.
TY again, hopping on now to reciprocate those follows. Happy Saturday to ALL!! Thanks for links, forms, and ideas!
I agree with you! It seems so simple, yet it's not happening. What do you want to learn? How can I support you?
Thanks for joining this week’s ! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from today!
A6: How do you provide personalized PL opportunities? That seems counterintuitive.
Thank You to my co-moderators and the founders of &
Or maybe , I should come over and check one out first!... https://t.co/aQlCE3Kj0g
you can bring it! Start small, take the risk! Check out Ed Camp website ;) Use your PLN as a resource :)
A6: Look to examples of which often highlight effective strategies for empowering individuals
A6: & Twitter are the biggest for me Ts are reluctant for some reason but I continue to push.
we are talking how you gauge your personalized learning. What changes in your practice, your learning
https://t.co/kz48XmFSzW
demanding outcomes and metrics isn't an imposition?
Follow thru is crucial. Too many great ideas never are actualized. Need structures to facilitate this.
https://t.co/49uzirXRlq
Have a post discussion on how their experience will influence their classroom tomorrow. Then followup
