A1: With "My Favorite" Learned at Let students present their passion to class in 5 min or less.
2 hour delay on flight to Sacramento to see thought I would join and see what it is about.
Tracy, 6th gr from MA, jumping in a few minutes late. Eager to see what's cooking tonight!
Katie!! You are going to love !
A1: First you have know them. Then you celebrate their interests by showing interest and asking questions
Glenn HS science teacher from Michigan
A1: When I was teaching they would have a student of the week award, celebrating Ss for many different things
Hi I'm Rebecca from NYC. I'm a 7,8,9 Math and CS teacher... I'd love to connect with some 2ndary Math Pirates!
A1: Ask Ss what is their interest or what they would consider themselves an expert in, and ask ??s, Ss feel confident and will share
A1 I admit when I don't know, and I invite them to teach me something new.
A1: I tell them when they've stumped me. I ask about stuff I know they'll know better than me.
A1: grades, sports, drama, being a good samaritan all was celebrated
A1: , arm wrestling at lunch, sharing interests, going to try S-led EdCamp as well
A1) We get to know our students. We incorporate their interests into our lessons.
a1 all my great ideas, come from them, this is their class, not mine, thier input is not only encouraged it is absolutely paramount.
Hi, y’all! Melissa from Mississippi checking in late and only for a minute or two. Instructional Tech being a mom now at the ballpark.
A1: I teach all boys, they R better at sports, mostly taller than me (which means alot to a MS), & they draw better
A1 Build in massive space for student thinking to shine! Students are stunning - amazing!
Celebrate and post their thinking.
Yes, the water is warm. Jump in! Join the fray. Mike from MD - EL Media Specialist
A1: Get to know your Ss and then acknowledge their success no matter how small.
A1 Daily bell ringers include things like "Which one Doesn't Belong". Simple, but students are creative & often surprise me with ans
my favorite Oklahoma tweep:
That is really important, Misty! Great point!
A1- One of my students unofficially set up a teaching time of her own each day. She presents different tech and stuff she likes.
A1: Focus on relationships and know what makes them special; sports, dance, experiences, places they were born, etc.
Nice! Like that strategy
It lets them be the teacher and shows that we're all learners. https://t.co/In3MtXsevy
A1: I tell them when they've stumped me. I ask about stuff I know they'll know better than me.
Chris Tucker, assistant principal in Indiana.
A1 Let students take the lead learn, explore, create, share!
A1: I let my Ss try guiding the lesson after the basics are shown. Let them jump right in to the fun.
hey! I'm about to land in Sacramento!
If you're the
"I would really love the menu for the whole meal"
type, here are tonight's questions. https://t.co/4GcF5hsEG4
Yes! Teaching math for the first time means I've often had to think through stuff with them.
A1 talk to them, share stories, highlight their work, ask them for ideas and let them lead lessons, teach Ss and me
A1 I make a point to celebrate every students creativity & individuality in class- I promote the unique! https://t.co/3R4HjFtUPE
I always ask Ss to contribute to units. One S just planned an entire class about race relations for us. I learned so much.
I would be interested to hear how you are running the Ss led EdCamp
Interesting idea. How is this received with her classmates? Love the initiative!
https://t.co/HVcPYYSVmz
A1- One of my students unofficially set up a teaching time of her own each day. She presents different tech and stuff she likes.
Q1: Allowing Ss to teach us about their strengths, saying I don't know that's a good think to research
A1: Letting Ss take over the classroom. Throw out a question or just giving them an open classroom to take over helps
Jaime Donally, Instructional Technology from East Texas :) Ready for some fun!
A2: Get to know each students' strengths and interests, give students choice and leadership opportunities https://t.co/cI1KmsiOub
A1: I use Ts strengths and leadership to design our online PD challenges, instructional rounds, & Ts share strats/new ideas monthly.
A1 When reviewing math problems I try to share/discuss with class both common errors AND interesting methods.
A1: I have some Ts using to give students choice and ownership of their learning. It has been great!
A1: invited Ss to sketch note their reading notes this year. A few took me up on it! I cannot draw.
A1: I reward my Ss individually and give them specific verbal praise, so they will know EXACTLY what was done correctly.
I love the student choice you afford them.
Using to find student passions and interests Has anyone used it? Wed. having our first kidcamp! So excited!
Like me, they were a bit taken aback the first day. Now they expect it. "What's it going to be today?"
A1 ask them to teach you a game at recess. They eat it up. Even in 8th gr.
I can count on one hand the number of homemade dinners still hot when eaten on Monday nights in the last year
A1 The best way is to build powerful relationships w them. Talk regularly with them and ask them what is new within those interest.
I like the specificity here.
The root of relationships; they have to be personal and unique to be special.
https://t.co/gmHQvViRnU
A1: I reward my Ss individually and give them specific verbal praise, so they will know EXACTLY what was done correctly.
A1) STEM,letting Ss create, sharing Ss ideas, making sure they know that I don't always know!
Hi friends! Sandy, middle school ELA pirate from now rainy MN. Looks like a great chat w/ You should join
Arrrr! Jumping in late. I'm Stefanie from Peoria, IL and I teach 2nd grade.
A1:Find out what Ss into, weave into lessons, make that S one of the teachers/experts during lesson that incorporates their interest
A1 we are getting started with genius hour. We tried our 1st TLaP day...huge success!
A1-Ask Ss what they are interested in and weave it into what you teach.
A1 we have school dance performances and Ts perform on stage w Ss. Ss sometimes teach us the dance!
Ooooh, fun idea! How are their notes? Oftentimes showing our faults encourages our students to take risks.
https://t.co/UISxEam898
A1: invited Ss to sketch note their reading notes this year. A few took me up on it! I cannot draw.
I know an art professor and his Ss are only allowed to
A1 By building relationships & giving Ss a choice in how, or what, they are learning.
It's rained here a lot too! 200% of normal in some places
A1 I let go and let them be the experts. Students need to be the stars of the class witnessing their incredible gifts everyday
A1 Let Ss see your mistakes...and help your find the answer or solution! #
Sorry late! A1 allowed for Ss to teach me, each other, & their families- They were experts beyond what I thought possible
So good to bump into you again
My Ss teach the class a topic and if questions on that topic come up, then the Ss are the experts.
Going to start next year and can't wait!
A1 I aspire to be a 'balcony person' when interacting with students. First heard this phrase from
A1b- Put Ss in driver seat: I have to teach x, how should I? Ss have amazing ideas.
not gonna lie, I'm pretty psyched to only have 3.5 days left!
A1: Apply student voice/choice and autonomy whenever able. Give up, control freak!
I love this! Such a good way to showcase Ss skills/success! we may have to steal this!
I lucked out and got to do GH for my own PD this year. Studied podcasting. https://t.co/OaRpRQMmO7
A1: I have some Ts using to give students choice and ownership of their learning. It has been great!
Students love choices!
https://t.co/4q5WuN1skm
A1: Apply student voice/choice and autonomy whenever able. Give up, control freak!
can you explain that more?
definitely need to talk to & about
I think you'll find it really meaningful and wonder why you didn't start it earlier!
A1 we're hoping for a student-led, student planned TEDx event next year. Total control by Ss what they talk (teach) about
I'll have to pick your brain about kidcamp, it sounds like something I'm planning to try!
3rd grade teacher in Hingham, MA checking in with my crew tonight.
A1 . Positive Recognition & share the stage with them. I give credit where credit is due with exaggeration. Q1
is on my nightstand. only a chapter in
Love this!! My 1st graders love learning new things and teaching the class...and me!! https://t.co/nmpFVaygoC
My Ss teach the class a topic and if questions on that topic come up, then the Ss are the experts.
Got some cool new ideas for my Pharm calc class in the fall. It will be a learning extravaganza whether they like it or not.
I've talked to my principal about using for teacher PD. I think it would be really awesome to see happen!
A1 also my class began genius hour.
It's attempt of doing edcamp when I have no clue what I'm doing! LOL More genius hour w kid choice of which 2c
Oooh! Please do share!
cc: https://t.co/YqLfnybGwA
Got some cool new ideas for my Pharm calc class in the fall. It will be a learning extravaganza whether they like it or not.
I once saw a published T hang all 20 of her drafts that showed rejection before being published.
Glad to hear a lot of chat on Q1.
A1) Give them the permission and power to share their expertise with the class... Whether it is or just time to share.
treat each kid as a family member; set them up for success; set up collab that works
now that is an awesome word
A1:Open ended tasks can also be good for allowing Ss opp to incorporate their passions into class work
A2: I think s/t I let culture run the show more than it should but I like having fun. Always ready to let them tell me the connection
yes! Ss should be taking ownership of their learning. Great point!
Nice thought Amanda. Love to see what students will do. https://t.co/xieKhF4t6h
A1:Open ended tasks can also be good for allowing Ss opp to incorporate their passions into class work
say more. How do you treat each kid as a family member?
amazing to see Ss shine with their interests. They wind up doing more than you would ever ask.
they love the choice cha cha: Change, challenge and chance. The 3 "chas" create choices w/ impact.
My gist: cheerleader, encourager, supporter, applauder (vs. basement person tending to pull others down)
A2 Classroom culture must come first. Ss must feel a sense of belonging in your room before they can share, learn, fail & grow in it
A2 good culture leads to better content, but there is truth to the saying the best management is a good lesson
A2: Without a positive culture of risk-taking and trust, you can never really get to the content in a meaningful way
A2: Culture breeds content. All we know, we know because Cultures felt it was important enough to keep. Create a culture of inquiry
Love this idea! What grade do you teach? Gotta be primary!!
A2: Content is what is used to build the culture and then to continue to let it grow in the classroom with the content still solid
Sounds fantastic Sandy! Would love for you to share
how did they do! I want to encourage this next year. LOVE sketchnotes!
B-I-N-G-O
https://t.co/eAjSGxounq
A2: Without a positive culture of risk-taking and trust, you can never really get to the content in a meaningful way
Boom.
This was my lesson for years 3 - 6.
https://t.co/8P7s9FXPH3
A2: Without a positive culture of risk-taking and trust, you can never really get to the content in a meaningful way
A1b) It is about valuing your students. It doesn't take a lot of time and can bring great benefits.
A2: practice, failure, practice, more practice, Tim, experience, practice
a2 admin asked about next years class goals? As a chef, let me see the ingredients (students) before planning the meal.
Finds kids strengths, interests, passions and gives kids activities to do in area of strength
A2:if you spend the time on culture U end up w/more time for content, they want to learn, worth the time and effort for sure
A2 Constantly learn and change, and don't be afraid to pull back or try again if it didn't work out as planned.
Rich, jumping in late from NJ/PA! Checking in from the PA Glad to be with the crew tonight!
A2:Culture is the driver of everything, w/o culture you can never get to meaningful content
A2 I honestly lucked out in a huge way-Starting my career w/ class culture was always the priority-glad that never left me:)
The real question: Why are 75% of students graduating HS not proficient in ?
A2 The most meaningful learning can't take place until a culture of growth, community, trust, respect...has been establised.
greet them as they enter; get to know what they like/dislike; passions; truly care and they respond very well
For sure! May be epic fail but I'm jumping in anyway!
A2: I spend weeks at the beginning of the year building that strong classroom culture. You must have trust before you can learn
A2: Capture their ❤️s first then they can truly learn. Strong relationships allow the curriculum to truly blossom! Happy Ss learn!
A2) Culture is so important. Without the right culture, content becomes secondary.
some Ss get intimidated by "passion." My colleague asks Ss to get curious, passion's back door
In MA, I thought we couldn't write new goals until we had new Ss data?
A2: A community means trusting each other, knowing everyone has your back and everyone wants everyone else to succeed.
Mine too! Also why I'm eating a perfectly good steak with my phone in the other hand tonight...
A2 I make culture with content early on in class by creating a creative environment w/ student https://t.co/wRTTxjjJxQ
A2 If we can't understand where the Ss are at, there will be very little content learned. RELATIONSHIPS are 99% of your driving force
A2: Classroom culture comes first! Ss must feel safe before they'll do their best work for T
A2 Just like my students need the opportunity to see failure as a learning opportunity so did I. Culture is the next level of success.
It HAS! I hope you are well!
A2: The Ts R my students & I try & give each individual time, find their needs & wants & just balanced it. Q2 https://t.co/cmCtL1e9uN
I'm not sure I have the balance. 27 years of teaching and I try something new every year!
Yes, sorry about the steak thing. https://t.co/ZrZKBUvXIE
Mine too! Also why I'm eating a perfectly good steak with my phone in the other hand tonight...
Exactly! https://t.co/cO1mml3x42
A2: Without a positive culture of risk-taking and trust, you can never really get to the content in a meaningful way
That R word is important too.
Relationships (what R word were you thinking about?) https://t.co/q5kPOEiaSx
A2: Classroom culture comes first! Ss must feel safe before they'll do their best work for T
Agree culture is the foundation, most of our time should be spent creating/maintaining it. Content will come.
A2) With STEM I let my Ss know that our goal is to develop the 4Cs with an emphasis on Collaboration over mastery of content
ahhhh I wish paperwork didn't take over sometimes!
A2 my class was all about family. It was important 2cheer each other on &we had a lot of competitive teamwork
So important to lay the ground work for a positive culture!! https://t.co/Ua35DXl6h9
A2: I spend weeks at the beginning of the year building that strong classroom culture. You must have trust before you can learn
A2 I focus on the culture from the start, build relatshps, help Ss feel comfortable and work in content, good foundatn
nothing wrong with that at all! How can we improve if we never make improvements?
. I agree. Curiosity could be considered a personal passion of mine. Haven't killed any cats yet!
Math book? Yes...but not just math! ? Picture inspiration & ideas but filled w/math examples! https://t.co/81zAPBRkoH
Wooohooo! Epic fail risk taking is the best place to be :D
Make the content part of the culture. Use examples they can relate to ask them find connects between content and their lives today
A2 The better my classroom culture, the better my classroom learning. Amazing learning needs an amazing environment!
I talk about how we are all fam. And address them, esp. if there are issues, w "Family, let's talk..."
The Choice ChaCha!
https://t.co/keJnYjkrJp
they love the choice cha cha: Change, challenge and chance. The 3 "chas" create choices w/ impact.
A2 never forgo the 1:1 student conferences. So much to share and give great feedback (both ways!)
hope I can get a copy over summer.
also "show what you know" area at the end of a quiz/test. Give Ss chance to share what mattered to them (more than to T)
A2:always teach interns: Know/love S; know content deeply; stay passionate about making a difference & everything else falls in place
I'm with you, and some years are better than others. Students are always different and new.
Scoreeeeeeeeeeeeee
(I might be a little distracted)
Should there be a balance of culture and content or should culture outweigh content most of the time?
Preach! School is out and still working on it! https://t.co/DTKoRXEjq0
ahhhh I wish paperwork didn't take over sometimes!
A2: All about the class dynamic, some are easier than others. Have to catch each S by the topic they relate best with
A little literal but I think it does communicate our family bond!
A2b) Teaching Ss how to think and relate with one another not what to think and do.
Huh...was just talking about Socratic strategies with ...what are Socratic Seminars?
Risk taking is the norm for a PIRATE!
Classroom culture, I spend LOTS of time building and strengthening so we are comfortable to learn & make mistakes together.
What course(s) do you teach? Grade level?
Little learning happens with content delivery.
When students are empowered, produce content and exchange ideas, the culture shifts.
Eat left handed, tweet right handed. I adapt.
I like this. Pull a desk outside the classroom and dedicate 3-5 minutes to each student. A lot of time, but well spent.
I like this. Pull a desk outside the classroom and dedicate 3-5 minutes to each student. A lot of time, but well spent.
Those soft skills will serve them so well in life. https://t.co/0hJs9ybSWZ
A2b) Teaching Ss how to think and relate with one another not what to think and do.
What is the most important action you take that creates this culture?
Culture & content collide!
In a blink it will be time 2 begin again. Ss count on us to guide them. What could you do to build on your knowledge of relationships?
when kids care it changes everything - if they don't care abt content, get them to care abt culture - empowers
A2 I think culture comes 1st Yrs I've gone further & deeper w/ content have been yrs I've been able to front load community & culture
A2a It was a Gilligan’s Island episode where I learned something about Shakespeare I remember to this day.. https://t.co/ENhyFJhfRJ
poet Mary Karr told Syracuse U class of 2015: "being curious & compassionate can save your a__'
Culture first. Content will come but w/ testing, observations. Hard to find balance
Reading Love the description for Day 1 of class (pg 23), perfect for my college class, different and cool
A2 Four corners is an easy strategy to work on content and culture simultaneously.
A2 End every unit with a day asking for S feedback. If we want them to listen to us, we must listen to them!
A2: when excitement for learning takes over a classroom, content eventually follows. Takes many "awesome" days to discover this
SO TRUE! the kids change so our approach must change each year! Never a dull moment
A2 Building relationships with your kids is first & foremost. Your lessons include their interests. Ss more engaged, risk-takers
It's definitely on my after summer school reading list!
A2b So balance between culture/content: to thine (life experience & interest) ownself (including your tribe) be yourself & true.
+1 for patience on this.
Excitement for learning is HUGE
https://t.co/7dN82eSif0
A2: when excitement for learning takes over a classroom, content eventually follows. Takes many "awesome" days to discover this

I'm planning one for the last week of school! I'm excited to hear how yours goes!
I teach every kind of art from painting to film to 3D printing with grade 9-12
A3: I love finding pictures, articles, short vids which I project and hope generate discussion before the late bell even rings
A2:curric is a living document. Standards are met though the lens of classroom culture. That's the balance
great. The harder shift was for me! My own learning style isn't that so assessing it was new and different and fun!
A2: culture is the foundation of your classroom - building relationships and creating a positive climate https://t.co/ynXrkJHP0K
A3: HOOKS! Creating a buzz about learning will get the Ss excited before they get into the classroom
A2)The key for me was confidence. With more experience, confidence to create my own culture came naturally. It's hard when you're new.
A2b I attended their sport events &used my personal stories n lessons. They felt comfortable sharing their experiences & understanding
got their attention today saying, "I made a big mistake!" they all looked up right away!
they are mine too! Sometimes I have to remember that I am the clam in the tech storm for them...patience, working on it
Wish you could be HERE Tim! Would love your expertise!
a3 love teaching students basics of greenscreening then instruct them to teach others small groups at a time.
Team building, letting Ss lead (everyone takes turns), and I purposefully make mistakes & let Ss, so they know its OK
A3: hooks, things involved in, make it a game, relevant to life outside school
A3: Try to connect the content to an interest, to novelty, something that makes them want to know what I need them to learn.
As I see it, cultures generate headwinds or tailwinds (even crosswinds, I suppose) that influence concurrent learning.
working on that now myself. Did today with our
Perfectly stated! Thanks for that https://t.co/0ae5LaRJSL

learning is messy. We just need to let go and embrace this!
A3: mindblowing clips, photos etc
A3 "today you'll read the greatest breakup letter of all time". (Dec. of Independence)
A3: Just showed kids this pic and asked,"tell me anything you can about it." Got great stuff, from math to art https://t.co/42yAkfxp9E
careful on this one, as many classes have a wide range of interests. Some Ss may *love* something, while others do not.
A3: hooks are great side dishes. Love posting an image and not saying a word about it. Let Ss drive discussion.
A3: Try to get Ss excited about what comes next using hooks. You have to warm the grill. Ask that question that gets them talking
A3: I start with something that the Ss show interest in and use a lot of comparisons to keep them interested
A3) We haven't done this enough with our appetizers... it happens more in science to Hook them in, but need more in other areas
A3 Using video cameras to record learners practice efforts. It was captivating feedback they did for themselves..
A3) is a fantastic tool for this. This year my 3rd graders all researched MA sharks, teamed w/ local conservation group.
A3: Lots of hooks! Creativity, choice, unique way to intro topics, role play, music, art, music, classroom design, tech, inquiry
Now this right here, folks, is what you call an engaging side dish.
BOOOOOM!
https://t.co/Yw5OVKGlE7
A3: Just showed kids this pic and asked,"tell me anything you can about it." Got great stuff, from math to art https://t.co/42yAkfxp9E
A3 once I used a crossword puzzle at the beginning of a unit, 1st 1done got a prize, they would find answers to the puzzle n the unit
. Make a mistake in front of a child at least once a day. Most important lesson we can teach is modeling how to react
Thank you and for helping to publish !!!
What if teachers did this?
https://t.co/tZz2dXTEsR
A3 Using video cameras to record learners practice efforts. It was captivating feedback they did for themselves..
A3 when assigning unit projects I always hide group topics around room and have them find them. Gets them excited for unknown!
I'll have to try that, I'm getting old & move slower as the night goes on, East coast so it is later here
A3 Plan random activ, spontaneous, ask Ss for ideas, new things/games, surprise them at door w/something fun
A3. Revert back to love of exploration that occurred during Kinder year - playdough, sand, being outside, finger painting even!
A3 In 1st books I read at "read aloud" time have sparked my Ss interest in ways I did not anticipate. Love to see them curious!
A3: #Scratch#Dash&Dot were my side dishes.I "borrowed"Ss & Ts let me in to teach in their classrooms. https://t.co/rRSXausKZg
Absolutely true! It comes down to knowing your Ss and tailoring, as often as possible, what you can.
A3 STORIES! Stories captivate and make kids long for what comes next esp if there's a cliff hanger!
I want everyone to read it to help eliminate the divide between Language Arts and Math
A3) I'm unfamiliar with the phrase and context. Is curiosity more powerful because it is intrinsic?
A3 Ss need to learn to ask the questions. They are so used to just providing the answers. In math try https://t.co/B9ltjiKxPb
it's gotta start with Ts, pull and not push, early adopters first. All good lasting changes occur that way.
I need to learn how to do this!
A3 I often rely on visuals as appetizers to whet curiosity.
Join chat happening right now!
It was our pleasure to work with Matt and John to bring this awesome book to educators!
A3 I love to start a lesson with What's Going On In This Picture? It's amazing what kids come up with.
A3: I ordered unsliced pizzas and students had to use geometry vocabulary to tell me how to cut it. https://t.co/oTDpz635gD
. Open ended imagery...the perfect side dish....for learning.
it's all about how you recover/learn from your mistakes.
A3 I love(d) incorporating their interests such as creating music videos, playing life size checkers (prob solving, etc) & more
Good point Visuals are very powerful for promoting curiosity and for providing access points for everyone.
A2: culture is the plate content is served on. It should be braided into your curriculum and never neglected.
A3 stories help. I also introduce little pieces of future lessons, and then say "No no, I can't tell you that yet" ss want to know
Dave when are you getting Craig to write a book
A3: Ts have to use specific hooks to help Ss grow. All comes back to the RELATIONSHIP in the class
One of my new favorite ways to get Ss excited. Tomorrow my first graders
now this is awesome! I love it. Food+learning=success
you know you just wanted to fold one up and eat the giant italian taco. :)
A3 Side dishes r often videos-Kid President, Caine's Arcade, Ted Talks-Ss r curious about kids making a difference-they c they can too
Love the power of visuals. They make you wonder, give all complete access to the conversation.
https://t.co/vVQJO4TOLH
I'm wondering the same myself.
A3) my teacher friend had kids call his mom when he did something wrong. So effective - modeled mistakes, was fun, built connection
A3: Puppets, ukulele music, dancing, costumes, puzzles with missing pieces ~ anything that piques interest and mystery to engage them!
I'm planning a one this Wednesday.
A3: what do these three poems, pics, songs, vocab words have in common....that's what we will be learning about!
unsliced pizza. Nice move!
Extemporaneous example: Twitter's culture creates headwind against discussing content in depth.
There's where my popcorn went.
That is AWESOME! I think I might have to give that a try.
A3 I introduce lessons w/ short creative challenges that accentuate the fun in following curiosity https://t.co/ym3HBM8ccr
A3: I had a teacher in teacher's college talk about using music to keep them interested. Singing songs helps a lot
I'll have to send you some more!
A3) I used to use Chris Van Allsburg books w/out words to spark conversation and wonderment
I promote Craig's fake book all the time. It is top 3 of fake books
Showed my Ss primary source pictures from . Had them write questions they were wondering about
Wouldn't you LOVE to learn from Barbara? https://t.co/fEf9YXqVUj
A3: Puppets, ukulele music, dancing, costumes, puzzles with missing pieces ~ anything that piques interest and mystery to engage them!
Once again, our menu of questions for tonight's , just in case you want seconds. Or thirds.
Eat up. https://t.co/OcyqBMDFvo
Love the mystery Barbara :D Ss love to figure problems out
Amen to lowering the bar of entry.
perfect. Then let them dive into the library to answer the questions!
Ss need opp to learn how to politely correct adults. Make mistakes, so Ss don't think they should be flawless
I'll save this for symmetry. https://t.co/eglTHWQ8ZT
you know you just wanted to fold one up and eat the giant italian taco. :)
A4: I have had Ss take their fails and create something new from it that they know will be a success.
A4: Start by admitting & owning your own mistakes. My growth mindset BB had a typo. Left it up w/note about what I learned (proofread)
A4: focus on positives what did right, then ask them to find 1 thing they can improve and start there
Have Failure Fridays where you share learning from mistakes. I haven't tried it, but a friend swears by it.
Nice. Delicious symmetry.
This is awesome. Would love to be fly on the wall. https://t.co/wnfwgjOtYQ
A3) my teacher friend had kids call his mom when he did something wrong. So effective - modeled mistakes, was fun, built connection
But the library is closed .... :( I go to classroom.
A4:I love this question. It's about the culture again. Ss must feel comfortable taking risks and knowing they learn from mistakes
A4 Teach a culture. Give feedback, encourage perseverance.
A4b: tell S, so glad U said that, that reminds me . . . uncover misconception or other cool stuff
A4: Create a culture of celebrating failures! A failure gives us one more way that doesn't work! If we fail quickly and learn we win!
A4: First, Ss need to now it is okay to mess up. Learning is more readily remembered if you have to work at it.
It's been over a year since I've taken a class. Ok I went to Peru on but still. That changes next week.
Must be MS? I'd love to create an intro to STEM for elem.
Nice idea! That consistency builds it into the culture and the repeated opport. is powerful. Nice going!
A4 Mistakes are a way of life in my class. We celebrate fixing them, but honor making them, because a risk was taken.
A3 "Once you have this done, I have the perfect project only you can do." S is eager to get to "side dish" https://t.co/rQwDDHFZeO
that was weird because I was in Missouri today
A3: video clips, quotes, questions, games, activating prior knowledge, co-constructing criteria https://t.co/u03llCaq4a
A4: Empower Ss with FAIL/growth mindset, collaborative culture & not to intervene if they can do it! https://t.co/VEdDsq2REn
A4 In science being wrong is more interesting than being right. We are here to learn, celebrate effort.
A4: Many times a "mistake" can actually lead to a better way to learn.
A4: "Mistakes are proof we are trying" is on my classroom wall. We use mistakes to learn from them, improve https://t.co/jG1hkZ61xC
A4 Ask students to give all possible wrong ways of solving the problem. we gave the answer & steps & they had to explain them
A4) mistakes are potential ice-cream-come-moments (cone invented at world's fair - when they ran out of cups they folded a waffle)
A4 I make mistakes all the time. How do you make sure you don't make that same mistake again? Ss need that modeling
A4:By framing the entirety of human progress as a timeline riddled w beautiful mistakes. Mistakes are the catalyst for change!
A4: Give them the tools to show what they know. MC,T/F,essays are not the only way for Ss to show you they have the content mastered
A4 celebrate the effort then use a leading question to head them in the right direction
Goodnight I know, pass the geritol, I'm fading fast... Great chatting w/ the crew as always!!
Love!! Used his art tons 4writing inspiration! Miss this as math C--will have to develop some VanAllsburg math lessons😉
I was thinking " Fake it until you make it"
A4 Ss talk through their processes with others, discovering mistakes, learning from them, understanding why they were made. #
A4: I ask how the S arrived answer. Most of the time I get, "Oh! Hey! Wait!" My response? I'm so glad we could have this conversation.
A4) Celebrate student mistakes as learning opportunities. Affirm that student's mistakes are demonstrating their learning.
south central near the north
A4:Open Lines of Communication and building a RELATIONSHIP. Using key words that built vs destroy. Q4 https://t.co/JgmKRUGwMk
Hey, we just wanted to let you know that these responses are outstanding.
The favorite button might get broken by night's end.
A4 I learned from a good friend to actually use the word LOVE when Ss make a mistake & I have used "I LOVE that you said that" often:)
A4: Model and call yourself out on mistakes and show how you learn from them. Celebrate the effort and what we learn from mistakes
A4b: Model revisions, celebrate improvement not perfection, teach self/peer assessment, allow for reassessments!
A4 Also, ... never be the "negative teacher" in your students eyes
A4 Mistakes are the path to real learning, embrace it & share your story- model risk-taking & learning https://t.co/qfoUzAJeUo
I am working on one and it will be a doozy
A4 Also let them know its okay and productive to struggle.
Students LOVE video clips and games!
A4 Celebrate mistakes as a result of risk taking and an opportunity to learn- discuss the learning- what not to do, tweaks, etc
A4 One of the first things established as part of our class culture...Mistakes aren't bad as long as we learn from them!
true but getting parents to buy into that can be very difficult.
I not only make mistakes, I laugh at myself, figure out how to move on, and keep going...Ss so need to see that!
A4: I changed model from "Teach, Review, Assess" To "Teach, Assess, Reflect." Make corrections, earn points, value reflection
A4 teaching is part of the way there. Do a gallery walk of accidental inventions like the ice cream cone.
There's also "My Favorite Mistake" where ts and ss get to say what's awesome abt an error
And the converse:
Always be the "positive teacher" in your students' eyes.
https://t.co/LHN4TJXtAy
A4 Also, ... never be the "negative teacher" in your students eyes
I always love the ways they come up with to fix to their mistakes too. That ownership is so important!
allows us to observe our Ss' processing like never before! Ts focus should be on process over product. https://t.co/JmZm08JZM9
A4 Ss talk through their processes with others, discovering mistakes, learning from them, understanding why they were made. #
But ....but...that's a whole two questions away. I'll try to be patient. I will. I will.
A4 let students set goals and reflect on progress. Help them reflect on how they can learn from missteps.
Q4 My Ss want to show how they did a problem & how it went wrong. Others will go I did that too. I get goosebumps!
A4) I visited the MS/HS to see their STEM classes and saw an Epic Fail board. I plan to do one as well but with student video blogs.
A4 connects to A1 If you have a classroom culture where Ss feel free to share mistakes and learn with peers it's all good (my 3rd A4!)
A4: F - First
A - Attempt
I - In
L - Learning
I'm becoming a pro at modeling mistakes & failure for Ss/Ts :)
Thanks for the reminder! I need to buy my
A4 Find a way to build on it, apply it another way, think thru it w/Ss, emphasize we understd challenge, help them work thru
A4B Ask Ss to create a student event such as an edcamp. Help them fulfill their vision. Offer resources to research. Sit back...enjoy
True... They discover where the errors are and are able to adjust and learn in the process https://t.co/DDShvba6qj
I always love the ways they come up with to fix to their mistakes too. That ownership is so important!
not respond...I work on that each day as well
A3 Teaching students about math, physics, art and storytelling while building video games
Extemporaneous answer 2 sparked by Q4: Culture of reflection = tailwind that speeds learning from mistakes
A4: Stories/films of growth mindset are so important to remind kids mistakes create magic: Walt Disney, Spare Parts, McFarland etc.
I'm fighting this right now. Our last day of school is June 16th!
Here's the thing, when you try, you make mistakes. Every day I try something new and screw it up https://t.co/V4J5i5Pbwe
I'm becoming a pro at modeling mistakes & failure for Ss/Ts :)
A4 Build a safe classroom environment that fosters risk-taking & empathy. Mistakes are opportunities to stretch learning, not stop it.
A4 talking ab mistakes is not the same as how you react to an S making a mistake. It's all in the response. Plan ahead!
right there with you. If we're not at that place, we've lost our effectiveness
Exactly! My kids feel very comfortable now making, finding, and learning from mistakes> GROWTH
A4: "If you don't make mistakes, you're never going to grow" my roommate just told me that after reading this question.
Do you run multiple edcamps through the year? https://t.co/Du7UJKWPIM
A4B Ask Ss to create a student event such as an edcamp. Help them fulfill their vision. Offer resources to research. Sit back...enjoy
A4) keep seeing this FAIL=First Attempt In Learning. Love it. Feedback and reflection more meaningful than the permanence of a grade.
Fail fast and fail often! That was our motto in product development. We also did post mortem meetings. https://t.co/55qTyw8Z3L
Extemporaneous answer 2 sparked by Q4: Culture of reflection = tailwind that speeds learning from mistakes
A4. A mistake is AWESOME. Now you are one step closer to what is right. Learning is a process not a POOF.
I need to see pictures. Sounds incredible!
Even if the mistake is just admitting they did not prepare for the task. Own up, move on & put in full effort
A5: Teaching math, lessons need to come FROM the real world, not just apply TO it. Use Experiences to teach content = fun & Relevant
A5: Away from the: "This was how I learned." to: "this is how we can learn and grow and have fun along the way."
Can you give an example of how you respond? For example, do you praise the effort, etc?
You got it sister! https://t.co/MqCuRWcwoL
A4 connects to A1 If you have a classroom culture where Ss feel free to share mistakes and learn with peers it's all good (my 3rd A4!)
The "post mortem meetings" has me curious. What took place there? What made for an effective meeting? https://t.co/V6XOGksBJr
Fail fast and fail often! That was our motto in product development. We also did post mortem meetings. https://t.co/55qTyw8Z3L
Extemporaneous answer 2 sparked by Q4: Culture of reflection = tailwind that speeds learning from mistakes
A5: It is much like tech integration. Fun integration must be purposeful
students see right through that textbook style of "real world problems". Not usually part of their world
A4) LOVE this teaching technique "my favorite no." All about learning from mistakes, genuinely. Video here: https://t.co/uuMTKeJrpU
Hmm. MS Ss might get into clasroom post mortems - learning autopsies!
Are the edCamps subject based? Connected to content?
Are you implying that Ts aren't always right? Blasphemy!
just had edcamp Global, edcamp Global Classrooms & Global Maker Day-all virtual. No school will take a S Edcamp risk yet 😕
A5 Administrative support, less reliance on the pacing guide, mistakes by teachers accepted as part of growth...
A5 less learning because we have to, more how do we solve this problem? Easy to do in science. Always problems to solve
A4 Refer to first attempts as prototypes and development builds
A5: focus on ways to engage/make meaningful. Fun gone wrong=play w/o learning or purpose
A4: feedback and feed forward - what they did correctly, what mistakes were made, next steps for learning https://t.co/0XeGkfDllV
A5 Don't get bogged down in text books. Use meaningful methods to hook students and get them excited about learning!
A5 T must show passion for what they teach. Ss are great at seeing phony enthusiasm.
A5) Teachers need to empower students to lead their own learning. Connect students with each other and the world
As said, just because we survived school, doesn't mean our kids have to have the same story! https://t.co/czYcGkAOro
true but getting parents to buy into that can be very difficult.
A5: If the T has built the correct atmosphere with the Ss, then FUN happens all the time...even when Ss are learning.
A5:Ts need 2feel safe to do something besides textbook, be lesson designers, create lrning experiences for Ss https://t.co/QefRJfht5y
a5 teachers need to feel the freedom to fail, and should be given the room to experiment snd try NEW things.
When Ts INTENTIONALLY plan an experience- it's FUN and aligned to standards for learning- Memorable!
It helps to have a different prompt; one reason I created https://t.co/WmOjqxYDrw
It isn't about /the/ answer; it's about the process.
A5) Ts need permission to take risks, even fail, to build enthusiasm & innovation. But risks must still be tied to realistic goals.
A5: Fun is often associated with off-task, unstructured. Mindsets need to change. Parents, Ts, admin, students https://t.co/0Xt9qlhLHP
A5 doing things just for fun doesn't = learning. Watching a movie is fun, but I don't walk out of every movie having learned
A5 we need to give Ss more of a voice in what they want to learn and encourage them to set goals
A5 Keep activities meaningful and purposeful.
A5 A Ss can think a game or movie in "fun", but can also see how a productive class full of hard, meaningful work can go by fast!
A5: talked about making Fun a norm at your school. I agree. But fun must have purpose. Everything we do must have purpose
Equally important is SAIL - second attempt in learning, need to reflect and redesign https://t.co/DmRfcXn2uf
A4: F - First
A - Attempt
I - In
L - Learning
Better luck next time, especially after pondering: What was learned? (Side note: I see classroom walls have melted away.)
My students LOVE it when I use that. I had an odd answer the other day!
"Fun" is arbitrary and varies for each student. I'm not after fun; I'm after curious.
A5 I bring the to class by putting less emphasis on grades & more on learning, exploring & laughing https://t.co/ovfwlKOnIa
I offere rewards to students who speak up when I make a mistake
A5 Guiding Ss to learn geometric figures? Hand them a can of play dough and lead w/ challenging question.
A5: Also re-brand "Lesson Plans" as "Student Experiences" It'll take your mindset to their seats and change the planning entirely
A5 Ts need to enjoy working with the Ss. Fun isn't always learning, so it must be the standard first then finding the right FUN w/ it
Mistake on assignment I always ask a question to redirect thinking. Never want to give them the answer.
A5 get rid of the old mentality of "I don't have to entertain, they should just listen to me."
Fun, learning, & community is goal
A4a Get a 2 yo to sign a video release. Then tape her doing anything for two minutes So many mistakes/learning opportunities. Share.
A5: BIG shift-> best for ALL not just ME mentality in Ts & Ss. Chasing fun can miss the objectives & become "me"centric. Engaging imp!
A5 Ss actually like to learn. Respect them; challenge them.Ss know when they are given a "bonehead" task.Challenge full of choice =fun
A5:My friend says the way to spot a failed lesson b4 it begins is a T feeling the need to announce it's "going to be fun!"
A5: New Addage...Don't Stop Smiling Before Christmas!
A5: "Fun" is arbitrary and varies for each student. I'm not after fun; I'm after curious.
A5 Fun, cuture, content... Until learners get an intrinsic grip on these ingredients, the magic is temporary.
A5 plan good lessons that remain focused on learning targets, but have fun built in.
It should be required watching for all math teachers!
so far it's been teacher PD & S shining in presentations. Not specific to subjects but open to all
Exactly! I don't enjoy being bored during PD, it's not much different. https://t.co/rUxd49gPAi
A5 get rid of the old mentality of "I don't have to entertain, they should just listen to me."
Fun, learning, & community is goal
A4b Mistakes [learned while under the care of a responsible adult — teacher] don’t kill. So why worry? [Alfred E. Newman poster?]
But I don't have to entertain. Granted they need a why.
Fun classrm goes wrong if task poorly designed or just filler Learning objective should be clear to Ss by end https://t.co/QefRJfht5y
A5 Chasing fun could go wrong if the concept is not understood or remembered the next day. I've had fun lessons that were really bombs
I like them both :D Curious is super fun for me
A5 I think a shift happens if we work w/enthusiasm to achieve the concept of Ss running into school instead of out thx :)
"Don't get bogged down in textbooks." You're singing my song, Jennifer! Keep it up! :) https://t.co/I5vDdHD6lQ
A5 Don't get bogged down in text books. Use meaningful methods to hook students and get them excited about learning!
A4c. Borrowing heavily from Adventure Playground blog.. give ‘em parts [for building something] but no directions. Record.
A5) Chasing a fun clasroom could go wrong if you're just trying to "entertain" the students without purpose.
A5 When fun leads to Ss asking to research and create...LOVE
hmmm, why wait until the end for clarity? How might we seek clarity throughout?
A5
Promote Mystery.
Tell Stories.
Be unpredictable.
Launch investigation.
Discover questions.
Allow room to reflect.
A5:
Been there. Chased fun and called it learning.
A5 Chasing fun can result in engagement, but not give a Ss authentic learning. Ex: competitive games..boring stuff made to look fun.
and we will in turn hopefully teach our Ss to make their choices in life purposefully
Hey Found a use for social studies books: weights to test our gumdrop domes! Integrated soc. studies/science!
If you teach teenagers (and see what they watch on youtube) their version of entertainment and yours can be vastly different
You mean like the "news" does? 😉 https://t.co/nOh2wd53hL
A5) Chasing a fun clasroom could go wrong if you're just trying to "entertain" the students without purpose.
Sure can! Ts need to keep learning targets & standards in focus. Ss need to know what they are too!
A5 More Ts giving some control to Ss, willing to try new things, focus on needs of Ss and your CR,
For Q6, feel free to add a blog post, a link, or a sample of what you use
A5a Have fun with it. If the teacher ain’t smiling the whole time something’s wrong.. Be unexpected.. https://t.co/2FN3A8jvTH
Same if you start, "I'm sorry, but I have to teach this"
A5 I ask..."was this fun?" In 1st grade we get to the point...LOL
A6: T report card, stole that from book, kids love it & give great feedback
A6: I go Baymax and put up the emojis and go: "If you were the teacher, how would you describe this lesson?" Then ask: make it better
A6: I ask for Quality Boosters all the time, Class Meetings, Report card for me filled out by Ss😊
A6: Give Ss chance to reflect in Exit Surveys on lesson or f2f conferences with honest communication. Google Forms is a great tool.
A6 we do "highs and lows" at the end of each day. Small school, I teach 1/2 their classes. I also just ask how it can be better
A6: I try to build an environment where Ss are safe to make mistakes and speak their minds. It's relationships https://t.co/TaOHnAgJiG
A6 hang charts around room w pointed ?s & hand Ss sticky notes to add their thoughts. Class discussion afterwards.
A6 being open w/ my class. We were very comfortable w/ each other. I'd ask, "is this something u all would want to do again?" Y, Y not
A6 I used to give Ss evaluations to fill out about unit, lessons, & teaching. Not sure why I stopped doing this...
A6) I use for surveys about interest and learning before and after STEM (20 sessions) I should add Qs for their opinions.
A6 I've done end of year evals by Ss. It's funny, thought-provoking, reflection. (I want to skip one class this year!)
A6) Ask them about each of the lessons and for them to reflect on the experience. Figure out what they're thinking.
Looking to chat some more after or ? Come join at the top of the hour.
never apologize for content, sends wrong message about school/learning
I'd argue more reality tv than the news...or are those the same these days?
Use and daily/historical events. Can teach anything with Google Earth Pro
we've got ourselves a good game tonight!!
A6 Just ask. I ask about my class to Ss in my room in the morning, in study hall, etc. Doesn't have to be formal. They'll tell you!
A6 give students the opportunity to give feedback on your lessons. It can be done with a suggestion box or survey or just asking them.
same thing. We can no longer distinguish the two
A6: I don't have to ask, they know that they can tell me. I can only grow as a T if they will help me to see what I need to work on
A5b Invite an engineer [or instructional designer] in to talk to your class about the process of designing something.. it’s iterative.
agree wholeheartly, but guilty as charged.
A5:When having fun is out in the open and a "normal" part of the day...every day we laugh, sing, dance
A6 This idea came from -last yr -I created a wordle of what Ss felt my class represented & and another for what Ss hoped it would soon
<3 wording "student experiences" after reading " book changing heading from library science to Welcome Library Scientists
Important to build that culture and to have that understanding https://t.co/IAC2tln3Xw
A6: I don't have to ask, they know that they can tell me. I can only grow as a T if they will help me to see what I need to work on
A6: I survery my Ss often, what worked/didn't work on an assignment, developing rubrics, whole class goals etc.
A6 New habit for me is including reflective Qs w/most assessments: e.g., How's this going? What's working? What's not?
oooh, yeah! (maybe) does something like that with her students. Nice work.
Also check out cybercemetery - where gov't websites go to die and WayBack Machine.
A6a Sometimes I design in something I learned from .. Exit Tickets [I think that’s what they’re called]..
a6 be brave ask what you taught that could have been better clearer or how can we improve, growth mindset is not just for them!
A6: I also survey my Ss in the beginning, middle, and end of the year so I can reflect & refine
A6: I have used Google Forms in the past for anon. feedback. I admit, I don't do it as much as I should
I got mine from book 10 min inservice
Our school does Ss surveys each semester for every class. Just finished today. However, I ask my Ss how it is going everyday. 👍🏻
A6b They’re an informal feedback tool where the S asks the T something they didn’t get during the class. The loop’s then closed.
oh wow, the whole school?! How is this received by teachers? By students?
I will do in smaller chunks next year .
and NEVER assign an essay as punishment
Great Q! For those whose "a-ha!"s come a little later I usually try guiding questions. Other suggestions welcome! :)
I tell them! We and every day we're together!
Yeah, I really should include it more along the way https://t.co/1FOwamV9Gi
A6: I have used Google Forms in the past for anon. feedback. I admit, I don't do it as much as I should
Please explain more. I'm curious about your library scientists.
A6 exit tickets for honest feedback, EOY I do a survey, what was your fave lesson, what should I keep doing, what should I nix?
See page 131 in for our feelings on this.
Spoiler: Not a fan.
https://t.co/FIOeK9Wk1y
and NEVER assign an essay as punishment
A7 I keep the routines going and spice them up with some variety. EX: Est180 on Monday orally instead of in their math journal.
A7: Continue to try new things. It's never too late in the year to make a change that will hook students.
OK, I like it, but *how* does that work? If I'm a teacher who wants to replicate this, what steps do I need to take?
a7 constantly say i've never done this, and when former students visit they always say we never did that, its cause each year is diff
A7: I laugh and smile all day, every day. I take time to listen to the Ss and their stories. When you're pumped, they're pumped
A7 I "bring it" every day! We are always learning, exploring, growing together in active, meaningful ways!
A7: I bring my BEST stuff in May/June! We have several memory-making ticket-worthy lessons at the end. I don't quit so they won't quit!
A7: reading professional books, having great energy & motivation, talking about summer as chance to become better T through PD
A6 These are probably mistaken.. Have Ss color something. Assumption being if they’re at peace it’ll be mellow. Dissonance = scribbles
That airport story was painful!
A6: ask for feedback throughout the year + end of year reflection, exit slips work great for this https://t.co/2qoxs9Dtbr
A7 you make every single one of them feel like they're your favorite, be genuine, always smile, make learning an adventure.
A7: I do projects w/ Ss. I roll my sleeves up, make a mess, make a fool of myself, ask their opinions, repeat https://t.co/M09OVy4yx4
my class is CP. My students are not TAs. They do/learn tons. They get in trouble if they refer to self as a TA.
A7 I stay positive, work hard to plan activ, engage them, get their ideas, more flexible, take risks & let them know it
Simple & most effective😊 When you have shown it ALL year, they KNOW it😊
just imagine how hard it was to watch in person. We are doing our kids a disservice by punishing them with writing.
A7: Excitement till the very end. I love to make Ss laugh every day even if they are laughing at me.
A7: Just keep laughing, smiling, and being me with the kids. It is the best I can do
A6 I tell them! I'm always happy, and I show it! Only good days. It's all about mindset right?
That story was painful just to read! Can't imagine being there!
A7 I wear superhero or shirts constantly-Ss can c I LOVE what we're into together seeing them once every 2 weeks we have FUN
A6 Adding onto feedback. Something magical happens when you make a change that a student suggested. They feel immense value.
A7: My minds spins with ideas. I'm always searching for the next experience that we can provide our students.
A7) Lessons don't stop. We look to provide memorable learning experiences and to continue to foster that love of learning
It was ALL I could do to keep quiet during SSR!
CP? Not sure. College level?
A7a A US history teacher at Colton High [circa 1972] I didn’t have used to dress up as characters in history. That was eye catching..
A7 I told my kids I ❤️ them everyday. Go to their games, tell them I miss them over weekends, made them feel like they were my life
No worries. Sometimes an awesome book is validation. That is powerful.
Connect w who w assemblies and celebrations etc.
A7 Had a fellow T question keeping twitter profile private to keep Ss from seeing. So what if they see me learning from all of you?!
A7 By my laughter, my continual playing with them, learning with them. Teaching them how to play chess these last 2 weeks. Fun!
Yeah... that doesn't quite make sense.
https://t.co/NhzLb95bc2
A7 Had a fellow T question keeping twitter profile private to keep Ss from seeing. So what if they see me learning from all of you?!
A7 I try new creative experiments with students at the end of school, the risks make learning exciting! https://t.co/mm98our4bX
A7 I do love my job: Sept, Dec, May, June. Doesn't matter which month it is, my enthusiasm and curiosity are the same.
A7) It is no grand event or special action, but the passion and enthusiasm you show throughout each day.
Still planning a game SOMETIME in June, around field trips, video creations, & exams😊
A7 The worthiest classroom cultures should not have on-off switches or otherwise be slaves to calendars.
I tell them! Have opened every demo & classrm visit this year w/ "I'm so lucky to have such a fun job...!" https://t.co/LCAzIxY488
