"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
@danvkoch Patrick Zuniga, Secondary Teacher & Educational Consultant. Last story I heard was at a HAAP presentation about a high school senior who overcame tremendous odds to earn a $11,500 scholarship
Matt Rogers, 4th Grade Learning Faciliator, Lancaster, PA. Wasn’t an academic podcast (but as a native of Philly, the hopeful ways that the Sixers beat up on the Celtics tonight) #Edtechafterdark
A1: I would define Visual storytelling as a way to tell a story in a some type of visual way. For example it could be pictures or a movie. This is important because many kids retain information better if they see it. #EdTechAfterDark
A1: They say a Picture is worth a thousand words. Visual storytelling is the chance to let learners make their own connections, creating their own story. Very similar to a picture walkthrough #EdTechAfterDark
A1 Making the pictures in your head a reality with any type of art. It’s important for Ss to be able to analyze and process their comprehension and details. #edtechafterdark
Something that has multichannel connections... Everyone has a story, students and teachers, stories create some of the most meaningful engagement #EdTechAfterDark
A1: Visual storytelling is communicating message, meaning, and emotion through visual modalities. However, it could include other senses. It's valuing forms of communication other than text-based. #edtechafterdark
A1: Visual Storytelling, to me, is the art of building a narrative without following traditional writing structures and incorporating visual elements to aid in the message. #edtechafterdark
A2 Your brain makes connections to previous knowledge. Storytelling is an art form that goes back years and that is how we learn, process and remember information. #edtechafterdark
Honestly I have no idea, maybe it could be because we are trying to make sense of it, and the best way to do that is to create a story in our heads.
#EdTechAfterDark
Observers want to have a reason why, a cause and effect, our natural inclination to create can be used to supplement what we see but what we may not know. #EdTechAfterDark
I believe that humans are used to narratives all around them. At school, in the movies, even in sports. It is our nature to associate visuals with a story #Edtechafterdark
A1. Here are the facts on Visual Storytelling. If information is presented orally, people remember about 10%. Add a picture and it goes to 65%. Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, 2008. #EdTechAfterDark@Flipgrid

I think that our brains seek connections in everything. We “need” there to be a reason and story for everything. Otherwise it is just depressingly chaotic and meaningless. #EdTechAfterDark
A1. What is Visual or Digital Storytelling? I've identified 8 Common Core State Standards students develop when creating Visual Storytelling! #EdTechAfterDark
The hook is what sets the tone and grabs the attention of the students, and it determines the level of focus that the students will have with the lesson. That being said, the content is just as important. #EdTechAfterDark
A3: You can answer that with what happens in your classroom library. Kids will pick up books with the fancy cover, not the ‘historic quality’. Their enthusiasm drives the quality of learning #EdTechAfterDark
Indeed. Reminds me of Christopher Nolan's "Memento." Leonard invents a story to suit his circumstances. We need to be aware of our biases when crafting story. #edtechafterdark
I really didn’t give this mode of delivery much thought until I studied dialogical teaching, this year I tell a story almost every day. Especially to reinforce language acquisition in bilingual classes. This type of engagement is paramount. #edtechafterdark
A3: I want Ss to have autonomy over what they learn in class, when they learn it, etc. I feel curiosity should come from within and not be "set up." I have Ss start class and use class time as they choose to meet standards. I sit and have conversations with them. #edtechafterdark
A1: Visual storytelling is sharing an experience with static or moving images. It could be to cause an emotive reaction like cry, laugh, gasp or cringe. #edtechafterdark

A3. Dan brings up a great point here. However, students should be creating a visual product to show their learning for an authentic audience. Drives the learning much deeper. #edtechafterdark
A3: People do judge books by their covers! How we engage students especially those that have decreased attention spans matters greatly! The best engagements lead to the students to inquiry without the Teacher placing questions in their heads. #AuthenticLearning#EdTechAfterDark
A2: People have a different way of telling a story. Think about eyewitness accounts...almost always different every time. IT's all about perspective #edtechafterdark
A4: More and more I use the simple features of Google Photos. The search feature is so accurate and pulls relatively accurate photos based off of the topic #EdTechAfterDark
Hey Matt! :) Small world! There are people on the internet that you know in real life! 😆 I love #EdTechAfterDark but it has been a while since I have stayed up this late! 8PM is more my speed! Join #mdeschat if you are Free!
A4: I just started exploring @Quik_App, but have not introducted it to my Ss yet. I love how intuitative it is, placing the transitions just right with the rhythm of the music you select! #edtechafterdark
A4: Here are my go-to storytelling tools: @AdobeSpark is easy yet powerful digital app for creating compelling & beautiful images, web stories, & videos; @Flipgrid for short story snippets; @Instagram stories are great for sharing your daily story #edtechafterdark
A5 We need to make connections with community members. Learn their expertise and figure out how to use it! They are willing to help out if we give them the opportunity. #edtechafterdark
A5. Using cloud-based tools students projects can bring in experts to help with the project. Build their project to an authentic audience to solve real-world problems. Learning connection with authentic resources. #EdTechAfterDark
That is what I have SEEN to be true! Me telling myself I need to make moves to incorporate @AdobeSpark as a tool to use! #EdTechAfterDark#TheTimeIsNOW -------->>
A5: We have several competitions in Iowa:Technology Student Association, @HyperStreamIowa, ITEC Student Fair - Students prepare for a real audience. #EdTechAfterDark
A5: Give Ss opportunities to share their stories outside of the walls of the classroom. Like Film Festivals, Open Mic events, etc. Of course, they can also share online via platforms like @YouTube Live, @Periscope, @Facebook. #edtechafterdark

A6: Visual storytelling can benefit the students because it is interactive and fun. I think when kids are having fun and like what they are learning they retain the information better. #EdTechAfterDark
Build the practice around your school and classroom goals. It may just be storytelling to teach, with the intent of improving literacy, or to encourage mastery. Don’t just tell stories to tell stories. #edtechafterdark
It can add another dimension to learning. Some students are hands on learners, some thrive in lectures or discussions, some are visual. This helps the visual learners. #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I think for so long we've not allowed Ss to share their story in ways that interest & empowers them. For example, some Ss thrive with sharing their understanding using video much better than writing a report! #choices#edtechafterdark
Technology is rapidly moving into Artificial Intelligence - Mixed Reality Technology and Quantum Computing. It will touch every part of our daily lives! Let's prepare student's for this. #edtechafterdark
