Q1. In order to choose the right #reading materials, it’s helpful to understand at what level a child comprehends what he reads. What are some essential skills kids need for #reading comprehension? #ldchat

A1: Reading comprehension is all about making mean from text. The basic building blocks need to be in place for students to understand the content itself: decoding, vocabulary, & fluency... #ldchat

What if they struggle with memorization #LdChat my C with #dyslexia ALWAYS struggled with sight words... function words ( this, in, on,) we’re biggest hurdle
A1: Also, students need to be able to engage with the content to comprehend it, using strategies like predicting, questioning, clarifying, connecting, and summarizing to think about the text and to extend their thinking beyond the text. #ldchat

A2: Students come from a variety of backgrounds & with a variety of skill sets, so many students have reading levels that are not aligned with grade level. One size doesn't fit all.. It's important to take both reading level & interests into account when selecting books #ldchat
Careful with assessing Listening comprehension vs eye reading comprehension. Poor decoding should not limit what a S is exposed to #Accessibility#Audiobooks#LDchat#Dyslexia
A2 to decrease frustration and increase motivation. If a child is spending too much time decoding words then comprehension will be affected, you want to build confidence not frustration because the text is too difficult. #ldchat
#ldchat The video below talks about what inspired me to write my book and it has has some excerpts from my graphic novel. It was an Amazon best seller and has received critical acclaim Nelson Beats The Odds https://t.co/o9F9JZUFup
I completely agree! If a student has good language comprehension but poor decoding then read-aloud tools such as text-to-speech may give access to text at their interest/comprehension level. #ldchat

UnderstoodOrg: Q2. Why is it important to find #reading materials for a child based on reading level, rather than grade level? #ldchathttps://t.co/i3Z0Z2CsNr
YES. This is why I still read out loud to my 11 year old. He listens at an interest and comprehension level above where he reads & it motivates him to want to read more #ldchat
Q3. What are some “less obvious” #reading materials that may engage kids with learning and attention issues? Why do you think they may be effective? #ldchat

RT RT MrsSchoneberg: To make learning equitable, we must meet students where they are and build up skills from there. Support doesn't mean standardized. #LDchat#DrakeEDLhttps://t.co/zj6czpBvvy via UnderstoodOrg #ld#adhd
A3: Books with different formats can be both engaging + more accessible for kids with learning and attention issues: audio books, comic books, graphic novels... even cookbooks may provide better starting points that a text-only novel #ldchat
I think this is an awesome subject. @Teachdotcom did a story on their site and they did a series on graphic novels and how they can be used to help kids learn. Here is the link https://t.co/p263TnJhSz#ldchat
A3: Tapping into students' interests is a great way to engage them in reading: magazines, short articles, picture books, or blogs that delve into topics they care about to pique interest and offer a more approachable format #ldchat

RT Q4. Let’s build our library! What books and other #reading materials have engaged your kids or students with learning and attention issues? #ldchathttps://t.co/cT5FJSqdo6 via UnderstoodOrg #ld#adhd
A3. Comic books, graphic novels, even audiobooks (a child can read along with the narrator) or can listen for comprehension and enjoyment. An audiobook requires focused listening and takes away the anxiety some students have with text/reading. #ldchat

#LDchat that term (low vocabulary) bothers me always with #dyslexic learners ( usually they have high verbal vocabulary).so curious and eager to learn.... forcing leveled readers is hard without GREAT #audiobook in addition to keep interest
A4 Minecraft how to's, books about how to do magic, how to build / modify electronic toys, how to make simple robots & perform science experiments, almost any how to is a success #ldchat
