#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

New and experienced teachers can bring a new, diverse vantage point to the conversation; diversity https://t.co/rVbdiQj0AM
A1: New and experienced teachers both being nominated to the school's leadership team
A2: Most of our PD days give Ts choice as to what and when they learn. This can be done on the spot or through surveys.
A2 I think an important issue with choice is that the opposite of choices is not commitment but rather compliance
A2: We throw away the cookie cutter and allow the professional development to evolve! The needs will rise to the top! INNOVATION
A2: Developed content vision statements in PLC’s this summer. This was T created and admin supported https://t.co/bwve3ShxXk
Q2 Choice is at the heart of Impact schools, but choice occurs within structure. How is choice given within PD structure to you?
let the strategic plan drive the options & the teachers choose how, what when, where the PD happens.

Q2 Choice is at the heart of Impact schools, but choice occurs within structure. How is choice given within PD structure to you?
offered teacher-led PD during Summer! Awesome opportunity with LOTS of choices.
A2: I've seen my P12 friends offering choice of content but equally impt--choice of format, delivery, & modes of interaction!
is now trending in USA, ranking 44
PD has to be differentiated just as classroom instruction is. Teacher created PLCs are engaging & relevant.
A2: We offered 9 online PD courses this summer. Ts chose topics they were interested in. Participation was voluntary.
Yes, what best fits them A2: Teachers are best served if they select PD opportunities related to their individual PLPs.
Exactly. Have to burn the box of conformity to truly allow teachers to GROW!
What platform did you use? Who created the PD?
Flex days in summer allow choices and flexibility for T's
A2 - PD carousel - Leaders identify areas that are school wide focus, but teacher voice informs PD options too.
A2: We use a combination of T surveys, a focus on district goals, district Ss data to plan PD. Just added another coach too

Q1 The equality principle says people have different roles but equal values. How is equality over title expressed in your school?
Great minds doc, GREAT minds!
That's what our Ts loved about the online courses. They worked in their own time!
Q3 The principle of voice says that leaders listen to understand. What are ways that you give/receive voice in your school/dist?
A2: PD includes both non-negotiables, as well as optional PD each year. Both come from goals, data, and T voice.
A2: survey Ts to find the need. Offer a variety of PD throughout the year. Teacher led is the best PD
I sure can. I created the courses.
A2: Giving Ts choice isn't about a menu of PD selections- but on T inquiry like a model - T's desire to be a learner
My superhero, sidekick is rolling out some awesome ideas 4 our daily PD; topix T's are passionate about
Love this answer. https://t.co/93XsJWDXVv
Exactly. Have to burn the box of conformity to truly allow teachers to GROW!
Q3: I believe I listen to others and try my best to incorporate T voice into leadership decisions. Relationships make this easier.
We are glad you are here! Jump in!
A2You need accountability too, with e.g. coaching that leads teacher to hit powerful goals that they chooses
A2 This seems really important to me. Ts need optional times to do their PD. https://t.co/sECSylvkVc
Flex days in summer allow choices and flexibility for T's
We did as well; offered flex days 4 faculty as an incentive to participate; high turnout, high engagement https://t.co/kojRTxdVz6
Send me this info https://t.co/urBXcAoVjO

A2: survey Ts to find the need. Offer a variety of PD throughout the year. Teacher led is the best PD
We offer flex days, too. Love it, but sometimes I would like everyone to be F2F for PD.
A:3 allow key school leaders to share culture, tradition, mores & values from their perspective- the teacher's perspective.
A3: I love to simply listen! Many times the situation is not to be truly understood but just to be heard! Act only when needed!
Open door policy, forming relationships- Allows for open and honest dialogue. We are our village! https://t.co/KLgQPwTHm7
Q3 The principle of voice says that leaders listen to understand. What are ways that you give/receive voice in your school/dist?

A3: listening to understand...flows from a ❤️ that truly values what others have to say!
A3: Doors at my school are open, people ask ?s, and Google Forms are utilized to make sure Ts have a voice https://t.co/JhG59EbBjx
Q3 The principle of voice says that leaders listen to understand. What are ways that you give/receive voice in your school/dist?
A2: I wish Ts would choose to collaborate more often instead of feeling like it's a hassle. Collaboration is the best PD
A3. For me, the big question with voice is do I really want to hear what others want to say.
A3: Often times when listening to understand we have blockers that can taint our outlook. Soak it in and then provide feedback!
Relationship w/ Ts & S is KEY! When this is present you will find more often than not that their voice lines up with school vision
A3: Saturate yourself in what the speaker is saying and then ask clarifying questions to gain deeper understanding!
A3: Listening to understand is different than listening to defend. This is a skill that has to be developed and is challenging.
When teachers participate in PD, they should turn it around within their schools/districts 2 those interested.
A3: As an admin, I make sure I participate in mtgs, PD, etc w Ts.
We have several school goals; w/choice Ts can focus on area they are passionate abt. Not spread themselves too thin.
W3: Leadership team, grade level, data meetings, parent reps on committees. Listen and visit classrooms often
A2 - and Instructional Rounds - so powerful to learn from each other!
I am really learning to listen thanx to Building Better Conversations
A3: Listening takes time. When you vow to listen, you give of yourself and you gain so much more.
It is hard at times, but keeps is grounded and growing! https://t.co/rCOy7V0TY8
A3. For me, the big question with voice is do I really want to hear what others want to say.
Agreed! The survey our t's completed will drive the sessions that we offer this year I believe this is key https://t.co/JwlLEdlkGN
A2: survey Ts to find the need. Offer a variety of PD throughout the year. Teacher led is the best PD
Why do we have to state that PD is non-negotiable? How much do we actually retain from those sessions?
We need to do a better job of facilitating this for you guys. https://t.co/BUJaxikQnJ
A2: I wish Ts would choose to collaborate more often instead of feeling like it's a hassle. Collaboration is the best PD
You're welcome! Let me know if you need more info.
Touché https://t.co/5NR4cxZLg3
A3. For me, the big question with voice is do I really want to hear what others want to say.
A3 seek to first understand, then to be understood
At their core, most Ts truly want to do what is best for Ss. If I open my door and ears I will be amazed at what I hear
I am blocking time on my calendar to be out in buildings this year -just to listen & collaborate
A3: Attending F2F weekly PD allows me to hear, discuss, think about topix from my T's point of view https://t.co/3ZpL9HKQIt
Q3 The principle of voice says that leaders listen to understand. What are ways that you give/receive voice in your school/dist?
A3: Leadership within.I tend to listen more than than talk. Many times just listening fertilizes the seed that is already growing.
Often times we must lead them where they may not want to go! Let's make the PD interesting and not BORING!!
A2: T PD is more effective when T's have input in what they learn. When needs are met, more effective teaching occurs.
Q4 Reflection is about having time 2reflect on info&make decisions based on the info. What is Ur reflection process after learning?

A3-often as leaders we have such a laser focus on the task at hand that we forget to pause and let the experts around us help out.
A4: We have implemented this year and utilize the maps as exit tickets! Also to serve as study guides at home!
One way we are working on is doing "an after action review" , a collaborative reflection. https://t.co/ZTZfKSMcTn
Q4 Reflection is about having time 2reflect on info&make decisions based on the info. What is Ur reflection process after learning?
I ask for feedback, listen to Ts, use surveys, share info. I believe in collaboration!
A4: We try to send out information in survey form, giving several days for reflection before survey is due.
A2 It's a pulse you tune into. It's work to stay connected. Spending time in schools is most important for me.
I like 2 blog about learning in Teacher Academy. Also, Ts who lead PD for the session, are guest bloggers! https://t.co/qEOOyRqAt0
Q4 Reflection is about having time 2reflect on info&make decisions based on the info. What is Ur reflection process after learning?
A4: Teachers utilize the maps for the reflection as well to compartmentalize the PD or lesson plan! Flow map provides structure!
Sometimes it is the beginners around us that give the best insight into how we could do something differently
A3 It's a pulse you tune into. It's work to stay connected. Spending time in schools is most important for me.
This chat is on fire! I can't even keep up with the questions! :-)
A4: When Ts do not have time to process & reflect, their decisions could be made based on emotion. Processing is key!
Absolutely! https://t.co/GNlFnftGlP
Sometimes it is the beginners around us that give the best insight into how we could do something differently
A4 A lot of my reflection has been about how I communicate, so I am watching lots of video of myself in conversation
A4: In PBL Reflection is key. What worked and what didn’t. Cultivating purposeful conversations is key. https://t.co/ziCmcNptDk
Q4 Reflection is about having time 2reflect on info&make decisions based on the info. What is Ur reflection process after learning?
I need to do this to craft my own practice. This is a great idea! https://t.co/1JH32WpSxd
A4 A lot of my reflection has been about how I communicate, so I am watching lots of video of myself in conversation
A3: Talking all the time is exhausting. Some of my favorite & most informative moments have been listening to my students.
A4 During a classroom visit I have collected data T wants and T collects some content data. We debrief w/both sets.
A4 During a classroom visit I have collected dada T wants and T collects some content dada. We debrief w/both sets.
This is a great idea! https://t.co/atYAX7CxNW
A4 A lot of my reflection has been about how I communicate, so I am watching lots of video of myself in conversation
A4- I am a list guy… I process and reflect using lists I have created during PD, meetings, etc.
A4: Always have a few take-aways and then run them by my "thought partners"-they are good listeners and questioners, then refine.
That is a great idea; taking a page from the sports world; got 2 see it for me to believe it https://t.co/Bpf1G5pR8B
A4 A lot of my reflection has been about how I communicate, so I am watching lots of video of myself in conversation
A4: I don't consider something "learned" until I know how to use the new info. https://t.co/zqhlTVIEEy
Q4 Reflection is about having time 2reflect on info&make decisions based on the info. What is Ur reflection process after learning?
I usually reflect privately first, then my blog is a space where I can reflect & share experiences.
We talked about “thought partners” with today! https://t.co/W8mbmlRIwb
A4: Always have a few take-aways and then run them by my "thought partners"-they are good listeners and questioners, then refine.
Amanda Stahle, High School Instructional Coach, Solon, Iowa joining in on tonight's chat.
A4 blogging is a reflective tool to help me process experiences & develop thinking.
Hello fellow Iowan. I'm across the state in Sioux City.
A4: Other times, I listen to info, learn, collaborate w/others, then come to decisions based on info.
A4: I low key wish I was cool enough to create visual notes about my reflections
A4: We also call it “critical friends” If you identify an area of need. Give me a solution.
A4: I write summaries of my day, which I guess are like journals. As I read back I learn a lot.
A4 I tend to forget the importance of reflection when I am tired. Disciplining myself to rest...VERY important.
So glad you are here Amanda! Jump right in.
Q5 Dialogue between 2 people is necessary for reflection to occur. How is a culture of dialogue fostered in your school/district?
I had to learn Canvas in May to publish the courses by June 1. Just a novice user, but I really like it!
Love this! https://t.co/5hYDh3Iudf
A4: I write summaries of my day, which I guess are like journals. As I read back I learn a lot.
Interesting. Good idea! I'm working on being a reflective listener & asking more Qs than I answer - video would help
I need to add rest to my calendar! 😂 https://t.co/a3iiJqs9H6
A4 I tend to forget the importance of reflection when I am tired. Disciplining myself to rest...VERY important.
We cant be afraid to ask reflection questions from the people we work for about the job we do and be willing to listen openly
A4: For me, reflection involves sharing, discussing,... The picture is always more clear once I've said it aloud.
A4 Writing is such as good way to reflect; a 10-minute journal entry over time can reveal so much.
I appreciate those colleagues, as well ! https://t.co/E0XVLJaVgb
A4: Always have a few take-aways and then run them by my "thought partners"-they are good listeners and questioners, then refine.
Exactly and only the BOLD need reply!
A4: I reflect by imagining myself in the new decision. Will it be the right thing? Most importantly - what will my words be?
A4: Sticky notes, lots and lots of them. Sometimes it's hard to write down bad reflections, but it makes us stronger.
yes my routine is often hand-written notes -> reflection/synthesis (e.g. in a graphic) -> blog post
At the school level we have frequent departmental meetings and PLC meetings to share ideas and foster dialogue.
Yes! And resist temptations to defend and just allow ourselves to grow. https://t.co/PDWrEXRlOm
We cant be afraid to ask reflection questions from the people we work for about the job we do and be willing to listen openly
A5: Admins should provide many avenues of communication. This is important to teachers well as being accessible for F2F.
We have made a conservative effort to outline the support system for the teachers so they know where to go!
not always, but it's how I tend to develop ideas, then cycle around again.
A4: SO great to have colleagues that are thought partners! was mine when she was at Hoover! https://t.co/bXbyGM06rH
A4: Always have a few take-aways and then run them by my "thought partners"-they are good listeners and questioners, then refine.
make time to catch your people on their turf. Walk & talk together in a nonthreatening manner! &talkpeople
A5 For dialogue to flourish, I think people have to feel they're not going to be judged if they speak up.
A3: Listening with an open mind and heart leads to understanding; bias keeps us from truly listening and excludes voices.
Q5 Something I'm really proud of is Principally Speaking Network. (1/1)
A5: I like chatting with teachers in their own classrooms. It is more personal and less intimidating!

make time to catch your people on their turf. Walk & talk together in a nonthreatening manner! &talkpeople
A5 I've worked hard to make PSN available to principals b/c we NEED each other to be better. (2/2)
A5 I have people that expect dialogue as a culture
A5: We encourage dialogue through partner teachers, PLCs, mentors, teams/committees,..but the key is making it purposeful!
That's it. The further you are from the FIRE the colder you become when attempting to collaborate! Get FIRED UP
A4 As a coach, I have to build intentional reflection time into the day. Can't have quality debrief without it.
A5. We can foster dialogue by trying to interact in a way that encourages others to say what's on their mind
loved the principally speaking network
Yes! And that they will really be heard. https://t.co/bqXwlW5443
A5 For dialogue to flourish, I think people have to feel they're not going to be judged if they speak up.
A5: Informal non-judgemental conversations. Best when in classrooms not in the office. https://t.co/qOvO7fceCy
Q5 Dialogue between 2 people is necessary for reflection to occur. How is a culture of dialogue fostered in your school/district?
Very true!! There's nothing worse than a person shutting down because of another's response to their input.
Got to be worth their time and give them immediate useful feedback or their is no purpose. https://t.co/X1nzLBNp5s
A5: We encourage dialogue through partner teachers, PLCs, mentors, teams/committees,..but the key is making it purposeful!
