#bcedchat Fred from Richmond, math mentor teacher and TTOC mostly Gr 4 - 12 but sometimes K-Calculus. Just returned from a powerful learning experience in Whistler at the Pacific Northwest Math Conference. Aggressively beautiful setting.
Thank you @CraigMah for reminder re @bcedchat but I have cupcakes in the oven that I need to watch for another 10 minutes... promise to be at #bcedchat while they cool down before the icing

A1 I worked with a great group of teachers at Heritage El in PG. We discussed assessment, CC's, numeracy and tech. This was self-directed pro-d @bcedchat#bcedchat
You may have to be more specific. It was a long day. (Although I was at Harrison Lake for the CPVPA conference with @willrich45 on Agility). A great session that pushed our thinking. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: Thursday, Friday and Saturday were all spent at #NWmath conference in Whistler. On Friday I started giving a workshop on visual patterns then went to @ChristineYH 's workshop and then 5 others, an AGM and 7 Ignite talks. It was an 18 hr blast.
Highlights from @nwmathconf hosted by the @BCAMT in Whistler as part of #PSAday - 1300+ educators from B.C. and beyond thinking together about the teaching & learning of mathematics. Conference committee work is consuming but rewarding! Mind and heart are full. #NWmath#bcedchat
A1 convened our study group to discuss topics of resilience, managing workload, maintaining focus on vision and supporting well-being of all community members in our schools #bcedchat
Friday was AH MAY ZING spent the day with incredible students and educators at #innovateED18 here in #sd23learns so much excitement and inspiration in one building #bcedchat
You may have to be more specific. It was a long day. (Although I was at Harrison Lake for the CPVPA conference with @willrich45 on Agility). A great session that pushed our thinking. #bcedchat
Hello everyone. I teach FI 1/ 2 in Cowichan and live in beautiful Victoria.
A1 I was in Whistler at the BCAMT and am looking at math time differently.
#bcedchat
A1: I was at the #NWmath conference in Whistler. It was a fabulous conference that really changed my thinking & how to teach math. Going into this week with a new perspective #bcedchat#mathisNOTaworksheet
I presenting about the #corecompetencies at #BCTELA18 . What a WONDERFUL conference, so much fun and so much gratitude. Only wishing I'd had the opportunity to be a student for the day (the only 'down side' of presenting!) #bcedchat
.@tracyacramer now that makes my heart smile to be mentioned with @c_durley Had the blessing of meeting her in person several years ago when she came to a PD I was hosting. Her writing has inspired me for years! How lucky are we to be in this #bcedchat constellation!

A1. Our psa @BCECTA hosted Carpe Teachum Engaging Learners conference in #sd43 with BCCL #bcedchat a lot of work but also a lot of fun with 20 workshops and a playnote (Interactive keynote) @SheldonFranken#PSAday
I spent three days of learning, networking & sharing at the ACPI conference, the national French immersion conference in Winnipeg. I learned so much about how to support teachers in the immersion program as well as specific literacy strategies for French learning. #Q1#bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: Fantastic to meet many twitter peeps face to face for the first time. Incredible to solve problems with teachers from K-post sec, to get their perspectives & insights into students. Some many transformative moments. . .
A2. #bcedchat for me the success was gaining 5 new teachers on our PSA executive!! @BCECTA is a newer PSA and this was our 1st bug conference. Also, the diverse learning. Very rewarding. #PSAday
A2: it was awewome working with other admin and teachers in my district- we are really looking at #GAFE as a possibility in many of our courses- I think we will try to transform so ideas about tech in our district #sd42#bcedchat
A1: I had the most amazing 48 hours of participating in and presenting at Pro-D! I wrote these two reflections about the epiphanies that came from the learning experiences
https://t.co/dGo2X7Is1G then https://t.co/5xxJCCltCj#bcedchat
A2: very successful! Great keynote speaker, three packed workshops, a marketplace, colleagues to chat to....not sure much more could have been fit in!#bcedchat
Q2: The conference was hugely successful, a lot of choice and the opportunity to learn about Canadian Francophone culture and connect with immersion educators from all over Canada. A TON of conversations during the set conference hours but also afterwards. #bcedchat
A2 Connecting with administrators from all over BC was so refreshing. Loved listening to different perspectives and hearing about issues and successes of other districts. #bcedchat
A2 It was awesome! Great to get together with a former colleague and a few of her staff and connect. Shared resources, problem-solved, chatted pedagogy. I was PUMPED! We could've used more time! #bcedchat@bcedchat
A2 we try to have a diversity of viewpoints and experience among our group! Experienced and new admin, VPs and Ps, HR admin. Brings us together to understand context as well as common challenges #bcedchat
A2 - there was nothing more that could have been done other than maybe having it over 2 days...their is enough talent in this province that we could have shared longer #innovateED18#bcedchat
A2 lots of chats and sharing about the importance of keeping students in schools and classrooms and not being “sent somewhere else” made me feel the importance of inclusion is catching fire! #bcedchat
I think that I would have liked to have had more exhibitors with non-translated resources (picture books, novels, etc.) to bring back to the immersion program here in BC. There were mostly publishing companies VS bookstores. #bcedchat
A2. My professional learning experience was very successful. Loved meeting and reuniting with math educators at the #NWmath and met people like @MathforLove. Awesome workshops. Inspired. Excellent keynotes. I wished I could have went to ALL WORKSHOPS. #notpossible#bcedchat
A2: workshop and learning was extremely successful. I learnt a lot about how to observe nature’s tracks to see who was there and have a closer look at plant life for distinct features that helps us understand their adaptation. #BCEdChat#sd36learn
A2: what made it successful - the people, amazing place, and thinking and learning together with educators from all over North America so hearing different perspectives which nudge my thinking. #bcedchat
A2: Some of the experiences were scheduled and the others were serendipty. But all were successful in that I connected with others and learned a bit more about myself as a learner. Significant is that I got to choose how and where and from who needed to learn.
#bcedchat
A2: Being reminded that kids are kids - we all have our own strengths and we all have opportunities to bring inquiry and #corecompetencies to life, no matter the age of our kiddos! #bcedchat
A2- Successful- meeting and collaborating with a group of teachers in learning is always a great time and something that creates get connections. #bcedchat
A2: always the challenge/hope is how to make it last longer than the 24-48 hours on the calendar. How to sustain ongoing professional growing when we are doing our day jobs? #bcedchat
A2: I think what made it successful was the large variety of types of workshops. Not only 1.5 hours but also full morning sessions so that we can go deeper in our learning. The best workshops I went to had a lot of time for DOING vs being receptive. #bcedchat
A2 It was very successful. Keynote was a little long and there were issues with catering, but I got what I came down for which was quality #ProD and a chance to learn and share together with colleagues across the province and it was amazing #bctla#BCEdChat
A3. #bcedchat the appreciation for others.cooperative learning and collaboration is key in the work we do with kids and each other. Relationships matter!!
A3: I got some great warm up activity ideas from the visual note taking workshop. Such as "cartoon yourself" with a step by step approach kids can easily do. #bcedchat
Q2: What made conference successful was the speakers inspiring talks, learning with colleagues, ideas that changed thinking, being introduced to great resources& supports, having a chance to grapple w new ideas presented in WS& motivation& excitement to try new things #bcedchat
A3 we talked about the importance of feedback as adult professionals. Important for staff to know that we notice their work. Going to be more intentional during/after class visits to touch back #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: At #NWmath@gfletchy highlighted the 5-practices: Anticipate student responses; monitor student learning; select key responses to connect progression; sequence the learning; and connect what is the same and what is different. And the power of progressions!
A3 I plan to create new guides for my students around research that arent specific to a course or subject and to take my library advisory councils work to my staff so they can see what they do. #bcedchat
A2: We observed plant species: native, introduced and invasive. We worked as forensics looking at footprints animals leave, including their poop and leftovers. We also hugged the famous Douglas fir trees and so much more. Surrey is blessed with nature ❤️ #sd36learn#BCEdChat
A2 I also find it interesting that despite all of the teachers I meet, I tend to gravitate to #bcedchat teachers who attend ACPI as we share so much in common concerning our learning needs and our immersion context.
A3: continue cultivating "pineapple pro-D" via the spirit of welcome and hospitality that leads to connection, conversation, community and collaboration.
I have some meetings this week for me to practice.
See: https://t.co/dGo2X7Is1G#bcedchat
A3 for one of my kiddos I was reminded of an old distraction I used: Bluetooth headphones and a nature/white noise app to help with morning transitions! #bcedchat
A3: great question, but should there be instant ‘resource/idea’ to be implemented? I have been pondering longer learning on these days. I’m interested in deeper learning at the moment. #bcedchat
A3 @CraigMah I think one idea that came up was to have me present to several schools on a more formal basis. I also really liked some of the new assessment pieces some teachers are developing. @bcedchat#bcedchat
Yes! It is often too easy to get distracted day to day; not from learning necessarily but from sharing. Finding ways to connect regularly and meaningfully is key #bcedchat
A3. Realistically though, intro flipgrid into my class. But was going to be doing that anyways. So...I'm going to go with starting to develop a "comment/feedback" list in GKeep to make it an easier process for me in LA. And more meaningful with external links for Ss. #bcedchat
I am taking my kids to Surrey Nature centre for a field trip. But I will prep them this week or next to practice observations of trees in our school neighbourhood. Cosmos is a good portal in Surrey to find out which trees are planted and where. #sd36learn#BCEdChat
A3 Integrating French in sciences humaines - making thinking visible and helping sts develop language to identify the literacy strategies that they are using by taking projected political cartoons and writing on whiteboard behind what they are noticing and questioning. #bcedchat
A3. @jamiljivani talked about the importance of providing young people - young men specifically - with positive opportunities for importance and inclusion. That's my thought for the week - how to build that with at-risk students. (I bought his book!) #bcedchat
A3. @jamiljivani talked about the importance of providing young people - young men specifically - with positive opportunities for importance and inclusion. That's my thought for the week - how to build that with at-risk students. (I bought his book!) #bcedchat
For outdoor education, research on plant species that are in your neighbourhood. Create cue cards for students that identify features in the plant and go on a plant hunt spree. An awesome detective game to learn about plants :) #sd36learn#BCEdChat
A3: Also, worked on an inquiry question to help connect to the work we did Oct 5 during the sd75 French Immersion retreat to develop a coherent vision for French immersion in our district. SFU's field program is going to help us find an answer #bcedchat
A3. @MathforLove at #NWmath. Use of conjectures & counterexamples. Also liked “How many...” and “What if...”. #bcedchat
What do you notice & what do you wonder about. Also liked @MFAnnie not use the question, no numbers or give the answer. Or @NatBanting change the constraints.
A4 1. Have a library advisory council to help you steer your library. Student voice is critical to a successful program. 2. Look at your mission as a TL and make sure its clear to everyone what they can expect from you #bcedchat#bctla
#bcedchat A4: @NatBanting's closing keynote made us think about the balance between constraints and freedom, and of course, the Rileys who inhabit our learning spaces. <- a Riley is that student who is always finding away around the constraints you try to utilize.
A4. Too many to count. Learned about @breakoutEDU! It's awesome. Something new, but takes the fun/critical thinking of escape rooms and bring it into the class. Physically/digitally, and even allows Ss to create their own (think ADST). #bcedchat#edtechteam#sd40learns
A4: I would highly recommend reaching out to @mscsmith3 to ask her about @breakoutEDU ! I’m always blown away by how exciting the problem-solving becomes & how easy it is to incorporate interdisciplinary skills & core competency development. #bcedchat
A4 1)be kind to yourself and trust that you are doing your best even when it seems rough and 2) learning takes patience and time... And that means for us too #bcedchat
A4:
(1) take Pro-D opportunities when they arise (just like we NEED to take our vacation days seriously too) We can't do this alone... go find others/connect!!!
(2) check out Pineapple Charts and #observeme see https://t.co/BRu0dTQR7U#bcedchat
A4: Thanks to @kwiens62 I am going to emphasize the importance of visuals in supporting kids but also keeping you from repeating yourself all the time! #bcedchat
A4: Discussion question - How can we build an inclusive culture for all French immersion teachers (different accents, different cultures, francophiles, francophones, etc.) #bcedchat
He was SO GOOD! Smart and wise and funny. His book is both research and lived experience. "Why Young Men: Rage, Race and the Crisis of Identity." #bcedchat
I have had my gears working away all weekend because of @jagill Technology + Kids= Inclusion. Thinking about how I can further my tech use to broaden the opportunities for my students. In our class & in the world. #bcedchat
A4. See my response for Q3 but also loved the online resources shared by @deannabrajcich to activate the #corecompetencies in math class. They were awesome. #bcedchat. Also enjoyed @TracyZager showing your mathematical thinking and how to construct a good math question. #NWmath
I tend to lean in this direction as well... practical is great, but deep, continuous learning is even better. However, I think most teachers need to be inspired by a 'DO' in order to make the shift... thoughts? #bcedchat
A4: I presented all Saturday morning but rehearsed with a teachers from Spoke the day before. I think what I also took back is that it is great to have the opportunity for open feedback and to apply it BEFORE presenting. #bcedchat
A5 @KennethHeadley:
1. Met an awesome K/1 teacher who is SO energetic and funny
2. We are doing SO MANY amazing things in @sd54BV
3. I get so excited to chat about my passions!
#bcedchat@bcedchat
At the LATA conference we got a lot of feedback requesting the instant resource/idea...people still want to go back on Monday with something to do. For better or worse... #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5:
1. I need to meet with teachers of all levels & curriculum areas to truly begin to understand how students learn.
2. Question posing is best when done with students.
3. Seek out transformative questions (that lead to defining moments) and transform your practice
A5:
Great question @KennethHeadley I was vibrating from the 48 hours of connecting with my practice. My aha moments were shared via my blog: https://t.co/dGo2X7Is1G
Comes down to: I am always learning from 'created moments' as well as 'received moments'
#bcedchat
A5 We just found our G Suite for Education accounts. I'm glad that the people I was with see similar potential for the use in the classroom that I do. #bcedchat To me, that was the most exciting part of the day - the sense of possibility.
A5
1) Psychological relationships are important to make change.
2) Easy to get overwhelmed with large school goals. Break goals down to small, manageable steps.
3) Many small steps create massive change.
#bcedchat
A5. #bcedchat 1. Relationships matter take time to nourish them 2. All the organization and planning can't predict every possible outcome, be flexible 3. Never stop learning. All big ideas but relevant for me in my current role =) #PSAday
A5: I connected to the importance of sketchbooks as a locus of learning for students. I connected to my enjoyment of watercolour and a new way to present it. And I connected to some amazing clay and glaze techniques I can share with kids. #bcedchat
A5 actually my aha moment came on the ferry ride back watching a basketball team having fun playing games, I really like one which is language base, trying on Monday #bcedchat
A5: running conferences reinforces my belief that transparency of process & deep empathy are always crucial, no matter who we are working with. Teachers R learners, not altogether unlike students, and welcoming them into foreign spaces requires patience & understanding. #bcedchat
I think for me the best moments were listening to the other attendees at lunch talk about their sessions and how excited they are to go back and try new things...the discussions were rich..and we have some powerful ss voices in this province #bcedchat#sd23learns
A4: Another thing I learned is to encourage us all NOT to correct mistakes (in lessons, criteria, etc.) in French unless specifically asked in that moment by the teacher author. This is important for inclusion. Merci @MmeTang for this piece of thoughtful advice. #bcedchat#frimm
A5. Responses for Q3 and Q4. We need to focus on math thinking and demonstrating them. Sense making with others. A good question provoked thinking and student interest & engagement. Reinforces what I believe in. Now have viable strategies to do so. #NWmath#bcedchat
True, but each learner takes their own path to understanding (although those use next day sessions were golden when I first started teaching). #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5: 2 really stuck out. 1:realizing the challenges I face, many others are two and 2:I'm starting to be at the place where I'm able to give back.
A5: HA! One of my best moments was at the Museum of Human Rights where we learned that they do virtual field trips in FRENCH. We saw a man walking around with a video camera and headset and he was talking in real time to a class. #thankfulfortimedifferences#bcedchat
A5: 1) Teaching ELL is not that dissimilar to LAT but easier to make the shift as an experienced LA. 2) I need to use more visuals 3) you can't please everyone. Just do your best and keep moving forward. #bcedchat
#bcedchat This makes me remember that Marian Small's emphasis on "it's not the task that is rich, but what happens after the task and where you & your students go with it" that is where the richness lives!
A5. Responses for Q3 and Q4. We need to focus on math thinking and demonstrating them. Sense making with others. A good question provoked thinking and student interest & engagement. Reinforces what I believe in. Now have viable strategies to do so. #NWmath#bcedchat
I was fortunate enough to present on the implications of Twitter for educators at the #CUEBC conference. Something that I share other than the "Best PLN" thing is that it's a place we can model responsible tech use + connect to authors, scientists, artists for students #bcedchat
A5. I found some "tools" (GExtensions) that I can intro to students to help them in their learning/writing/editing. Mercury Reader, SMMRY, and so much more. #bcedchat
A5: Believing in our learners and building their sense of self (kid or adult), risk level is the choice of the individual, and play must be freely chosen! #bcedchat
A5: I found this amazing resource called OserLire for French readers that differentiates for readers who can read more than others. All Franco-Canadian authors. All authentic resources. Perfect for lit circles. https://t.co/HzXylxwCUk#bcedchat
#bcedchat A5: I also noticed how teachers, not on twitter, are slow to adopt great teaching techniques. In 44 attendees at one of my workshop only 5 had done visual patterns before.
A5. But really, the ah-ha moment, was that I'm already doing a fair bit. And that it's about setting realistic goals for yourself and your class. #bcedchat
I think it is about those personal connections and building those relationships more than finding a resource to use on Monday. As in, “let’s continue to chat after I try this on Monday”. #bcedchat
A6: I had the opportunity to present and learn at ACTFL in 2016. It was the best Pro D I have ever had. 5 days, 12 workshops, 2 discussion sessions, 1 keynote and 8000 language teachers from around the world. #bcedchat
A5. 3 connections with my practice: positive connections make a HUGE difference with students; poetry allows us to think outside the realm of a singular life (we are all connected); reading the text aloud makes your writing better. #bcedchat
A6 - personally it was speaking and attending #tedxwestvancouver
professionally it was being apart of #TEDxYouthDoyleAve our ss have such incredible stories and remind me daily why we do what we do #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: Lesson study with teachers from K-12, professors, mathematicians solving problems together, designing lessons for reaching all learners, observing the learning (not the teaching) and debriefing how to improve next time. The prob solve warmups revealed so much math!
A6: I also enjoy the ACPI conference, and the best one was when it connects with APPIPC to provide a thought-provoking learning experience here in BC #bcedchat
A6 Once again so hard to choose as it has depended on what I needed at the time. One that was very memorable was spending a day with women leaders at the uLead conference for the past two years. Such an inspiring, supportive group! #bcedchat
A5ish I also had a reminder about the importance of reading out loud - even to teenagers and my youngest wants/needs me to read chapter 8 of the outsiders....even though I asked her to wait until 8.... (semi-ironically) #bcedchat
A6: Reading something that engages me coupled with an online group that extends the learning. Have found a couple of great ones in the past year! #bcedchat
A6. The connections made over the years with the people in edu, my go to, my supports on regular basis. Workshops: It would honestly be the #EdtechSummits (formerly #GAFESummits). I walk out with so many ideas to bring into my class. #bcedchat
My first EdCamp was transformative. I remember thinking "how can I make my class like this?" "Are students forced to sit and listen, do they have choices to vote with their feet and find something more relevant?" It's been critical to how I develop routine/centers/plans #bcedchat
A6: It’s not exactly an ‘event,’ but my best professional learning has been from A) joining Facebook groups, B) using Twitter, & C) doing my Master’s degree. The silos are real, so across the board my best learning comes from seeing what others do. Break down the silos! #bcedchat
A6 I participated in the #bcpvpalearn Supervision for Learning series a few years ago. Best part was the triad meetings in between sessions where we facilitated reflective convos about our actual practice. #bcedchat
A6: Best ever ProD? That's a HARD question. Best in recent memory was #amped18 with @kalebrashad and @drchagala. If you ever get a chance to spend time with those two, you won't be disappointed. #bcedchat
A6: No single event... I would say it's more about the people and my own personal growth over time. My first time facilitating Pro-D was about 6 years ago and that was the beginning of a life changing journey for me as an educator... #bcedchat
A6 Most transformative ProD was probably flying down to #edcampLA long ago w/ @guster4lovers. Started to make connections across parts of CA, and #caedchat was born out of connections at that #edcamp. #bcedchat
A6. I think the edcamps I've been to. #EdCampBCCC was amazing! I love the chance to get elbows deep in conversation with lots of different people. Also challenging myself to present and co-mod #bcedchat
A6: many prod events stand out but one I've never forgotten was a Sto:lo drum making workshop where I got to make a real First Nations drum with deer hide #bcedchat. Early 2000's.
A7 @CraigMah I have presented quite a few times. Always a toss up as I like to go to workshops as well. I've presented on CC's, Twitter, engaging middle-schooleers, math games, effective planning, assessment, use of iPads, Science Labs...
@bcedchat#bcedchat
A7 - I often present and I truly love it...I love igniting the spark and watching the excitement in other educators...if I could pick a topic that wouldn't matter where it was presented...I would call it "give it time" or "thank you for not quitting" #bcedchat
A7 I present at most pro d days, but hate it that I miss out on other learning opportunities at the same time. I LOVED Short Course this summer because it was all about my learning, I gained so much insight and ideas to look at my practice with a critical eye as a VP #bcedchat
A7. I presented at #NWmath. I was expecting 10-20 attendees at best. How about 150+??? Many sent regrets about not attending. Lots were there. #gratitude#humbled#bcedchat
Encouraged others at #NWmath to present at the next #BCAMT conference.
Q7 is here! Shameless self plug- I'll be co-modding next week's #BCEdChat. "Computers Should Replace Teachers" with Sarah Moore. Not as previously mis-punctuated "Computers should replace teachers with Sarah Moore"
A7: I have thought about sharing something to do with sketchbooks, or a painting wkshop based on Wayne Thiebaud, or a clay treasure chest wkshop. I haven't yet tho. Always feel too busy/stressed about it. #bcedchat
A7: Have presented one about creativity and the core competencies, several about Math (using manipulatives/ hands - on/ letting kids come up with their own questions) and now going to be leading one on Writing on Nov.7. #bcedchat
the BCPVPA short course was also for me hands down the best week of pro-d I did it right as I finished my Masters and it tied everything together beautifully #bcedchat
A7. Tough question. I'd go with something that I'm comfortable with, that still many edupeeps aren't embracing...Twitter. Or Getting Started with GDocs. #bcedchat
A7: My day job is to present/facilitate professional learning wrt #corecompetencies but given the choice I would love to present on the power of extracurricular pro-D experiences like Twitter and @EDvent247#bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: I think this weekend put me well past 120 workshops, presentations, keynotes etc. Even just preparing a WS is transformative (you don't even need to give it). It is that powerful a PD tool for growth. Of course I tell everyone that they should prepare a sermon too!
This is my favourite thing to do as a teacher! Jumping back in after a brief hiatus due to my new role last year. Assessment, Inquiry, Planning, CC, Numeracy... #bcedchat
A7. I have presented on co-teaching and I'd love to do a variation on it again. Which ties into inclusion / diversity. Which links to the CC's. So, yeah, thinking about it. #bcedchat
A7: I have presented on Social Media (Boundaries, Ethics, Platforms & Practice) - it’s an awesome workshop I was trained to facilitate. Recently I gave my first ‘talk’, about the importance of honouring transitions for teacher wellness & better professional inclusion. #bcedchat
Loved all the differing pro. d. that was available in BC on Friday. Thanks for highlighting it. Love teaching in this province! #bcedchat@CraigMah@KennethHeadley
