A1. We are a small class 3. 45 players. We have no choice but to go 2 ways at most positions #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: we don't have the coaching staff to do it. I think that's the biggest limiting factor #txhsfbchat
  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: total numbers first. And next how many "dudes" you got. Everybody knows what I mean by that too #txhsfbchat
  • Coach_Sneed_EM Nov 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 I've always been a part of a platoon team. I would do as much as I could to continue to platoon. #TXHSFBCHAT

Mathew Bennett, Varsity OL coach at Westwood High School in Blythewood, South Carolina. Glad to be here with you guys at #txhsfbchat
  • coachsuffal Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: to me if they are the best at that position they play both sides. I try to two platoon as much as possible though. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • coachfisher_rp - Moderator Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: We base it on the number of players in the program and how we are able to personnel each unit #txhsfbchat
  • coach_whitaker Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: don't have a lot of depth. We are forced to go both ways in order to compete! Gotta put the best kids on the field. #txhsfbchat
  • thexton32 Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 We are small TAPPS D2. About 40 players. All kids have to play both ways. If we platoon, would have to give up JV. #txhsfbchat
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: now we do like to not have our OL go both ways if we can. I feel that makes a big difference #txhsfbchat
  • Coach_Sneed_EM Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 certain positions we cross train and allow to play both ways. We also have specialty periods to cross train certain groups #TXHSFBCHAT
  • Zach_Turner1 Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: our philosophy has always been 2 platoon. So there is really no decision. Just the philosophy of our program. #txhsfbchat
  • coachdober Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: we have to use a lot of guys on both sides Bc of the number of kids in our program. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJoshHadden Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: Numbers. It's MS. Can only keep 32 based on uniforms. Have to go best on best nearly all the time. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachBennett32 Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1:We are at a school with enough kids that the only way we should see a kid on both sides is if he is a "dude" @CoachShiffman #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @CoachShiffman
  • Todd_McGhghy Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 I'd think Many times it's just as much of a staff, facility issue as player issue. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: some guys just HAVE to play both ways. Some guys CANT do it mentally. #txhsfbchat

Ryan Mcdonald OC/OL Mooresville High Mooresville IN #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: We look at our numbers first. We didn't have a "football culture" when we arrived so getting guys out was a struggle. #txhsfbchat
  • thexton32 Nov 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1..Need help here. Would the benefits of giving up JV to platoon be worth it? #txhsfbchat
  • Steele_House Nov 30 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: Early year we platoon 2 get more guys experience, n stay healthy let best rise 2 the top as season goes, finish mostly 2 way #txhsfbchat
  • FootballXandOs Nov 30 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: It all depends on the depth we have. Have done both and try to keep it to only the very best players. #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 cont: So we 2 platooned a lot last year. This year, numbers were way up. Only a couple of guys were considered 2 way guys. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachRmcD60 Nov 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 numbers are key but have to look at guys you just can't take off field even if you are a platoon team #txhsfbchat

  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
I think it depends on the player. Some kids aren't ready for varsity and need the JV experience and repetitions #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @thexton32
  • coach_whitaker Nov 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
We always have guys that are geared both mentally & physically for one side or the other. But we teach the basics of both sides. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachU_ Nov 30 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1) depending on your class size you may not have a choice, but we decided based on need, and what we have. #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • CoachZizis Nov 30 @ 9:14 PM EST
We are small school and usually have to, but if I have enough numbers for a specific (ie. line) unit I will platoon if possible. #txhsfbchat

  • Go_Rout Nov 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
Mike CEO/Founder @Go_Rout checking in. Long time no talk guys. How's everyone?#txhsfbchat
    In reply to @Go_Rout
  • CoachWoot1 Nov 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1. My belief is that 2 way players are the way to go. The best 11 need to be on the field #txhsfbchat
  • Zach_Turner1 Nov 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1: I hear coaches say what they do either 2 platoon or have two way guys. However, what do you guys prefer? #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1 cont: I prefer OL/DL guys to be one way. Our WR/DB guys are expected to play or at least know both positions. #txhsfbchat
  • coachfisher_rp - Moderator Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
so every player has two positions? #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @coach_whitaker
  • CoachTweedie Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
Neale Tweedie, ILBs, Denton Braswell HS, Denton TX #txhsfbchat
  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: best 11 gotta play. Mix and match where necessary but use your guys. We used a DL at FB some on JV when numbers got short #txhsfbchat
  • Coach_Sneed_EM Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
this past season ~75. We have platooned with as low as 57. #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @darrickware
  • CoachBennett32 Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: I've been a part of this both ways, have desperate staffs and a kind of deal where everybody coaches everybody kind of deal #txhsfbchat
  • CoachKizer Nov 30 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1: we are 4A here. 2 platoon is our lifeblood. We are hurry up spread so feel like it gives us advantage to wear out opponent #txhsfbchat
  • coach_whitaker Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: 9th and JV practice together before JV serves. Allows all teams to learn from the Varsity coaches. #txhsfbchat
  • FootballXandOs Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: We've done a poor job of this at most of my schools truthfully. We are looking into retooling completely how we approach it. #txhsfbchat
  • Todd_McGhghy Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1 The ability to Two platoon practice would be paramount. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachBennett32 Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 continued: I believe next year, there will be a lot more "mirroring" each other rather than desperate practices #txhsfbchat
  • Steele_House Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: 7-8th grade learn basic football and varsity base O & D, 9th majority of scheme, JV refine skill & scheme, Varsity execute!! #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJoshHadden Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: When I was a HS coach, we had JV that practiced w/ Varsity. 9th grade (B Team) practiced separate. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachKizer Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1: Allows us to be multiple in calls on both sides of ball. Kids don't have to learn 2 game plans #txhsfbchat
  • coachemup17 Nov 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1. If numbers are right. I usually make 2 guys off limits to Defense. Center and QB. Because of ball security #TXHSFBCHAT
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
we try to do everything to have one way OL or at least limit snaps #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @CoachZizis
  • tbanks1906 Nov 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
A1: I believe in 2 platoon until game 11 as a base philosophy but certain kids will spot both ways, this yr lineman were down #txhsfbchat
  • CoachBennett32 Nov 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2 continued: I believe next year there will be a lot more "mirroring" than having two separate practices #txhsfbchat
  • CoachWoot1 Nov 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2. I feel growing now that you need to get your studs Var reps early as Freshmen/ Sophs. It's necessary in the DFW #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: FR stay together. Our thought is if a guy isn't gonna be a significant contributor on V, he needs to stay down to get reps. #txhsfbchat
  • hastingsfbbears Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
We practice spring ball and every football player practices both sides to find our two way players. Elimination process. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachKizer Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: Here we don't do sub varsity. Freshmen team is that. We also 2 platoon here. Keeps more kids out when more get on field #txhsfbchat
  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
our center didn't play defense because he didn't have the mentality for it. QB played some safety though #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @coachemup17
  • DeanMunkers Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: At sub varsity levels everyone plays both ways and plays as much as possible depending on ability and need. #txhsfbchat
  • 11across Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
Had 3 guys going both ways on our OL this year. Not my favorite way to go. Hurts more b/c they're physical/engaged in every play #TXHSFBCHAT
    • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: now we do like to not have our OL go both ways if we can. I feel that makes a big difference #txhsfbchat
  • coachfisher_rp - Moderator Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: We two platoon JV and 2 Way Freshman. After 9th season, we assign O or D position for their future in the program #txhsfbchat
  • tbanks1906 Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: In GA kids get 6 quarters a week,so kids that have to play some Varsity get 2 on JV, but play to win smaller playbook though #txhsfbchat
  • thexton32 Nov 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2.. Sub varsity for a small school like us is number 2 on the depth chart. Tough, they may play JV and a lot of varsity #txhsfbchat
  • coachvint Nov 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
We two platoon all starters. We have a few of our best guys who may see action on both sides. #txhsfbchat
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
lettuce eaters can run all day #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @AHSCoachSoria
  • Shane4Him Nov 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
A1:it's usually a numbers game for us. Most of our guys have to. Try to platoon similar ability level to keep fresh bodies on D #txhsfbchat
  • Steele_House Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2.2: We have JV & V together cuz they should all know all the scheme, 7-9 on own for practice, 9 comes for Indy 1-2x a week #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2 cont: We had 2 solid FR on V this season. Starting QB and WR. Both are future D1 kids. Played 2 more FR late in the season. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachWoot1 Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
Q2. Also the playbook is watered down. Must be able to get the base O/D down. Has to establish a foundation for the program #txhsfbchat
  • Coach_Sneed_EM Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2 I'm a big fan of 2 platoon on varsity, but opposite on JV. I like two way players there. Gives more options later #TXHSFBCHAT
  • Go_Rout Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
yes, it has been an awesome last few weeks. Thanks for watching. Much appreciated! #TXHSFBCHAT
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • thexton32 Nov 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
You guys that platoon, what is your minimum number of players? 45-50? #txhsfbchat
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
Q3: What are the benefits of players playing 1 side of the ball vs both sides? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • JasonVGorst Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
A1 small school so we don't much. if two players are even then we try to to stay fresh. Priority to the defense #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
Exactly. Skinny guys can run all day...lol #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @ocjacobmorris77
  • tbanks1906 Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
yep. KILLS smaller schools. I have 2400 kids, 125 in program not huge but enough #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • shacknado Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
If we have the numbers, we love to have the guys go 1 way, just tough sometimes to fill roles and execute w/o some 2-way guys. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJohnson_13 Nov 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
A1 Really was based solely on need and numbers. Would prefer 1 Way but must get best athletes on the field at all times #txhsfbchat
  • JasonVGorst Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2 they work as our scout team holding padded shields. We stay away from full contact #txhsfbchat
  • CoachBennett32 Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: from an offensive line stand point, you know the big boys will be completely gassed if they are on defense for a drive. #txhsfbchat
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
do your lower levels two platoon? #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @Steele_House
  • CoachWoot1 Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3. They learn to become a master at that position rather than a jack of all trades. #txhsfbchat
  • Zach_Turner1 Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: you build relationships with your guys, create more chemistry, more efficient practices, better skill development #txhsfbchat
  • LLCooljudd Nov 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
#txhsfbchat Great topic. A2 We play both ways as fresh then start to two platoon on jv. A few jv guys may play both ways if needed.
  • CoachKizer Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: playing kids both ways allows best athletes to stay on field all the time #txhsfbchat
  • CoachShiffman Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: fresh legs, less chance for injury, time to talk to coaches on the sideline to fix mistakes #txhsfbchat
  • coachdober Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: 1-way keeps kids fresher throughout the game. We had issues with losing steam in second half due to number of 2-way players #txhsfbchat
  • CoachMHochard Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 playing one side = fresh. Playing both = best players on the field. #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • Coach_Sneed_EM Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 Less fatigue, more fundy time, 4x reps, greater scheme allowance, greater group identity, easier access for in game adjust. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • coachsuffal Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: two platoon keeps everyone fresh. I also like being able to make adjustments between drives. Not just at half. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • coach_whitaker Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: 2x the practice time when only practicing one side! #txhsfbchat
  • FootballXandOs Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: Practice time is great, only have to learn one game plan, learn the nuances of each play and your techniques. #txhsfbchat
  • Todd_McGhghy Nov 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 If you can two platoon practice more diversity in scheme. Simply two platoon without split practice would be conditioning. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachWoot1 Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3. Some guys you cannot deny their talent. However they are unpredictable with their level of play or focus #txhsfbchat
  • CoachKizer Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: One downfall to 2 platoon is best athletes can get complacent when they are not being pushed for there spots like 1 platoon #txhsfbchat
  • AHSCoachSoria Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: More reps in practice not having to flip to the other side of the ball. Also keeps legs fresh during the game. #txhsfbchat
  • coachdober Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: also much more efficient in practice if guys only have one position instead of one on O and one on D #txhsfbchat
  • JasonVGorst Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3 using HUDL Sideline with players currently out of the game has certainly helped. Especially with QB #txhsfbchat
  • Steele_House Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
When we keep guys 1 way it's 2 keep them healthy, either early in the year or if they have a very high WAR for Sabermetric fans #txhsfbchat
  • coachvint Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
did it with as few as 32. But we were blessed to have a dang good 32. Gotta have enough talent. No right number #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @thexton32
  • coach_whitaker Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: as an OL coach it's rough not getting to talk to the OL because they're playing defense too. #txhsfbchat
  • shacknado Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: Chance to talk and adjust on sideline is huge. Our OL was all one-way this yr, was key, needed to talk/adjust in a big game. #txhsfbchat
  • Zach_Turner1 Nov 30 @ 9:26 PM EST
Anyone run a no-huddle up tempo offense and have guys go one way? #txhsfbchat
  • 11across Nov 30 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: 1 side - physically fresh, mentally focused. 2-sides - best players in the field. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • Shane4Him Nov 30 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: Best benefit of guys going both ways is you have best on the field at all times. Fatigue/mental toughness are the cons #txhsfbchat
  • coachfisher_rp - Moderator Nov 30 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: Player and coach focus on one position, more players involved in the program and success of the team #txhsfbchat
  • ocjacobmorris77 Nov 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q3: practice is huge! Focus on one side and 1vs1s #txhsfbchat
  • wingtcoachdon Nov 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: Proficiency. All your time spent learning one position, not half of your time. Reminds me of Mesopotamian job specialization #txhsfbchat
  • 11across Nov 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
The in-game communication is where I feel the 2-way costs the most. #TXHSFBCHAT
    • shacknado Nov 30 @ 9:25 PM EST
