#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
Hi everyone! I'm a second grade teacher in St. Charles, MO. I'm studying digital communication with @ghartman. This is my first time participating in a Twitter Chat. I'm excited! #2ndchat
Hello! Amber Marshall, K-5 tech teacher from Wichita, KS. We just got access to #GAFE the last 2 weeks of school, so I'm excited to utilize it next school year! #2ndchat
Hi, #2ndchat! Down to my last 7 days of school. I teach 5th but will teach TK in the fall. I'm excited to see what #gafe tools my Ss will be capable of doing.
Megan from Columbus, OH! My students used GAFE this year, but I taught 4th and am going to 2nd this fall! I don’t think the younger grades used it much this past year, so I’m hoping to get more teachers involved with it! #2ndchat
Hey im Ben. Im from St. Peters and im a substitute teacher trying to be a full time history teacher. I'm studying digital communications under @ghartman. I'm excited for my first #2ndchat
It’s because adults put them in little boxes of potential when they are capable of so much more. Adults are more scared of tech than kiddos are. 1:1 works when teachers are willing. #2ndchat less oopsies than they think
A1: In my school is for two reasons: lack of funds and testing. My school isn't 1:1 in any grades, but the younger students get less attention because they aren't being tested. It's a shame!

A1: I think it's difficult to manage for some, especially the smallest of the littles. They're barely reading their names little along numbers and letters for a log in. But a little bit of rough is worth it in the long run! #2ndchat
A1 I think folks make assumptions that littles aren't capable and they require too much assistance. I also think folks don't think they are capable of working independently, without a teacher giving them the support. #2ndchat
A1 Admins don’t think that littles are worth spending tech money on. They start with 12th grade and by the time the money trickles down to K-2, there is nothing left. Or we get old hand-me-down tech. #2ndchat
A1: I think people don’t think they can do it and it also comes down to funding. There isn’t enough money so they give most of the tech to older grades #2ndchat
A1 Seems like so often the powers that be think that littles can’t use tech. Only big kids know what to do and can be successful. We know better! #2ndchat
In a similar situation at the school where I teach. However, we kept asking for a Chromebook cart for second grade & we are getting one next year. So excited! #2ndchat
Once you get passed the hurdle of logging in, anything is possible w/#gafe4littles. They are digital natives. We owe it to them to build upon it in the classroom. #2ndchat
One way we over cane some funding issue was convert older PCs into @neverware CloudReady. It’s a Chromium (Chromebook) OS capable to go on any device. Great for older tech #2ndchat
Q2: We all know that login time can be a struggle especially in the beginning of the year. What tips/tricks do you have for logging on and off devices? #2ndchat
Q2: Our technology instructor made awesome login cards that are easy to read and the students only needed them a few times before they got the hang of it on their own. I also made a student job "tech assistant" that tremendously helped! #2ndchat
We're lucky to have an extra adult in the room when we first begin learning how to log in. We learn in small groups. I put scotch tape on their device w/password until no longer needed. #2ndchat
I had one that brought me a chromebook because they thought they broke it, but they taught me a new GAFE trick and felt pretty proud after they left! #2ndchat
A2: I put em through a Chromebook bootcamp so it’s not an issue. Second I give them all the tools they need with my Single Page sign on. (One page with all logins in one place) practice practice #2ndchat
A1: They don't see the value in what littles can create with technology, others think that they need to limit screen time, so they don't need them in the classroom, districts get more "bang for their buck" by bringing 1:1 with older students. #2ndchat
A2 Be prepared and be patient! Have log in cards with different colors for user name and password. Have Ss practice. My Ss rarely used the cards after the first few weeks. I teach chromebook procedures beginning day 1. #2ndchat
A2: login cards & practice - we do it everyday and I time them. We make it a game to beat our time. First day usually takes anywhere from 15-25 min, but we cheer every time we do it faster. #2ndchat
A2: We have log in cards with our logins, but also some basic Google icons for reference. I think the biggest key to getting everyone going is logging in and off over and over again. #2ndchat
A2 I made login cards, printed passwords etc... on labels and attached every password the kids needed. I’ve also considered putting them on a ring and hanging them on a hook somewhere... #2ndchat

A2: My class is small, so this isn’t really a struggle for me. I do have cards for them though so they can practice doing this independently at times. #2ndchat
Me too! We have to teach them how to become good online citizens, as they will be spending a lot of time in the digital world- like it or not! #2ndchat
I like this idea! Just like when we practice lining up at the beginning of the year. It becomes one of the procedures like anything else.

A3: All about Me HyperDoc on Google Slides. Drawing, PiXel Art Learn about student and teach them some Googley tool skills. Insert picture text box typing, shapes, font etc #2ndchat
A3 I usually like to start with some #hyperdocs that let them work with a few things in Slides and Sheets then I slowly let them have more choice and options as the year progresses #2ndchat
A3: haven’t used GAFE with Little’s yet, but liked the ideas in the book about digital citizenship. Could be a good topic to get them to answer a form or post comments in classroom. Also think an all about me slide for e/ student in a shared slide would be fun to create! #2ndchat
#2ndchat A3 An All About Me in slides, but this year, they kept touching each other's slides! Took a break and tried again....finished in March! Normally, never a problem!
Drawings are fun to do early too!
A3: I like to start out with an All About Me slides with our buddies in 5th grade, but we also do things like start a Doc and type our name using different colored fonts. #2ndchat
I set up the assignment vis GoogleClassroom. I keep it simple and let them explore the shapes and discover. I model and some will copy but many will create their own thing. #2ndchat
That would be a great template to have. Wow, I’ve been here 5 mins and you guys are experts! Not sure if I tagged my first tweet. Kate from Ottawa, Canada, Grade ⅔.
Q4: In the book, Christine and Alice discussed how email was an important skill for students to learn. What skills for Littles can be taught with Gmail? What activities do you like to do with Gmail? #2ndchat
A2) I like to teach a small group of kids how to login making up a game of it along the way. Then I have them pick another student and teach them. Only rule is they can't touch the computer doing it. THEY teach the rest of class!! #2ndchat

A4: Letter writing for sure.. format and exposure that their words are communication to a whole other person. And they get replies it’s glorious. My kiddos are going to write letters to our Superintendent next year #2ndchat
I like Number of the Day by @PintoBeanz11 and @CoriOrlando1 also Google Slides with a variety of links inserted for them to explore different web pages, get started on inquiry and explore tech tools #2ndchat
In reply to
@MrsW2nd, @PintoBeanz11, @CoriOrlando1
A4: Unfortunately our district doesn’t give teachers or students access to gmail. Anyone else have this problem? Any good ways to practice these skills without the gmail app? #2ndchat
A4: Honestly, this is one I haven’t tackled yet. We work in a lot of shared documents and use the comments to communicate or make suggestions to each other. #2ndchat
A4 we haven’t used email yet in 2nd but we are designing some dig cit lessons for next year using @CommonSenseEd so will. They have a great lesson on email. I love how the book said it’s a great way to practice writing and reading as well. #2ndchat
A4: I want to try a project where they had their elementary kids design a monster/animal and gave the description to a High School Home Economics student to sew. I think this would be a great tool and the kids can practice descriptive writing/adjectives. #2ndchat
So sorry I’m missing the first chat for our book club! My family is visiting from PA and today we traveled out of town to visit my parents. I know it’s fabulous! #2ndchat

I have not really explored with it either! I hope to have my students utilize it more next year. I have had my students utilize the "comments" section on google classroom, and they loved that, so I am excited to try using gmail next year! #2ndchat
A4- this totally opened my eyes when I read that, I was nervous about email thing with my students but think it is a skill needed to be taught! #2ndchat
Classroom Question is a fun starting place. Don’t forget to turn off your notifications for comment or you’ll get 120 emails. Lol great second #digcit lesson later on lol #2ndchat
A5: making good and bad passwords or a kahoot for passwords would be a good activity! Could lead into a discussion why passwords are important #2ndchat
A5: We watch the digital citizenship videos on @brainpop, but I also let them trace their foot on a piece of paper. In that foot, they use a marker to draw all the things they like. Lastly, I give them a giant eraser and have them to try to erase the things in the foot.#2ndchat
Here is the @seesaw PD in your PJ's to show how I use it when we are connecting with other classrooms and leaving feedback. #2ndchathttps://t.co/BV5JMgWnYZ

A6: Christine and Alice gave us several ides of arranging our classrooms for technology use. How do you arrange/organize your classroom for 1:1 or less devices to help the workflow? #2ndchat
Q5: We do some work with A Kids Guide to Canada, connecting with other classes and so the idea of digital citizenship is meaningful - real people are out there etc. We also have a twitter account and talk about how and what we share. #2ndchat
A5: We create Social Contracts with our students, so we will be creating a Social Contract for our online classroom as well, and extend that to expected behavior while using the internet. #2ndchat
A6 I'm 1:1 and use flex seating. We review chromebook procedures at BOY and Ss understand how to use, carry and where they can place them. We practice a lot! #2ndchat
Boo! I had that once too. I just had to keep that and then create options like yoga ball chairs, scoop rockers, carpet squares, etc for around the room. #2ndchat
A6: kids are responsible for getting their devices everyday, but most important is being flexible about seating - helps with collaboration & communication #2ndchat
#2ndchat Love Love Love these to hold many ipads and computers in the classroom - especially when they don't need to be plugged in and charging https://t.co/fW5D0KOqp0
I love the idea and want to try flexible seating. Where do students store materials? (books, notebooks, folders, etc) Help me eleiminate the barriers and stressors please??? #2ndchat
A6: students understand the how of technology through tons of procedure and practice. Work our way to independence in class with choice. I want to set up a small group table with a monitor and HDMI for connective SG. Wish I had a pic #2ndchat
A5: I had something similar to this and mailslots to keep my devices. We were going down to 5 chromebooks next year for 20 kiddos, so I was getting nervous about managing that. I was thinking centers would be a definite. #2ndchat
#2ndchat Love Love Love these to hold many ipads and computers in the classroom - especially when they don't need to be plugged in and charging https://t.co/fW5D0KOqp0
A6 My Ss are assigned their own chromebook. We use ours a lot during Daily Five for writing and word work. Always use flexible seating at that time. #2ndchat
I have their folders in a bin, math books in crates around the teacher table, headphones in a shoe holder on the back of the door and books in their book boxes. #2ndchat
I brought in a set of ikea wooden shelves with the bins that hold my kids’duotangs. If you search flexible seating on twitter or Pinterest you’ll see tons of ideas. It’s all the rage and works so well. #2ndchat
My kids are split into 4 groups and then each group has a shelf for all their stuff. I left them in the same group and kept their things in the SAME spot all year long. #2ndchat
I thought this was like “aha” in the Classroom. Love the parent section on assignments. Cuts the mental red tape #2ndchat leading questions procedure etc #gafe4littles
It is something that the class creates together, so each one is unique to the class, but here is an example that I found online! (Couldn't find a picture of one of mine!) #2ndchat
A5 for all of the parents who want to know everything & email all the time! This takes a lot of that back & forth out and eliminates the problem. Great to replace homework and get parents having meaningful conversations w/ their kids w/ the use of reflection questions #2ndchat
A7: Parents love to see the work they are doing, so they can easily connect and see all of the great work they are doing online. They can also see how technology is a tool for their learning. #2ndchat
A7: I thought it was an amazing idea to let parents know why we are doing what we do. Often time our Littles can tell you how to do it, but not the why! #2ndchat
A7: I think this might be my favorite idea so far in the book! This is so critical in keeping parents informed of what is going on so that they can have better quality convos with their kids! #2ndchat
