#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
I was in like with hip hop for a minute, but I fell in love the first time I heard Mo Money Mo Problems in the back of Mr. Swann’s sci class. Ten of us was huddled around Lydia’s CD player 😂 #HipHopEd
Hip-Hop was like a next door neighbor that I grew up with and became best friends with without having a particular moment to determine that you would be crew. For me it is in my DNA #hiphoped
I fell in love with hip hop when I pressed stop and play and stop and play and hand wrote down the lyrics to biggies life after death album... all of it... #HipHopEd
I fell in love with hip hop when I pressed stop and play and stop and play and hand wrote down the lyrics to biggies life after death album... all of it... #HipHopEd
So the love affair with hip hop is renewed every time I put my students in a cypher (group work) or force them to battle. Camaraderie and competition creates magic in the classroom #HipHopEd
There's something about hip-hop that just calls to me. I'm a dancer, so I always connect to music through the beats. Hip-hop keeps me on the dance floor for hours. But it's more than that - it's also the emotion, passion & truth that hip-hop artists put into their music #hiphoped
Having my once private thoughts and feelings validated in a cypher made me fall in love with hip hop, and keeps me coming back #hiphoped#schoolcounseling
Been listening to HH since way back but the real love moment may have been Ladi Dadi. That turn was the whole package for me at the time. After that, @FINALLEVEL Iceberg record and the real message work by Cube and @MrChuckD spoke to this punk rocker #HipHopEd
Watching the pioneers like MC Lyte and Queen Latifah made me feel empowered as a little girl facing sexual abuse like...oh there are strong black queens out there. One day I'll be one and stand up for girls like me! Words hold power especially with a banging beat behind em
Can't wait to attend church on April 13 and witness you denouncing how teacher ed is implicated in the re-production of racism. To transform teaching, we need to transform teacher education! #HipHopEd can help us transform the preparation of teachers! https://t.co/2hteL2aU0B
And now that I work for @Flocabulary a company that uses hip-hop to transform learning/education, it's become a much bigger piece of my life! When I tell friends what I do for a living, they always say, "Wow - that's so YOU." YEAH IT IS :) #hiphoped
My uncle came home after doing 15 years in prison, he gave me Public Enemy “Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black”. It was all up hill from there #HipHopEd
Not only cyphers but I like the battles too. Example: Drake and Meek Mill had that battle for (reasons I forget) it forced both to come hard and the whole world watch. And no violence between the two came about. I like that a lot. #HipHopEd
We fall in love with Hip-Hop every time we enter a classroom where a 16 bar verse is written and comprises the depth of a teacher’s lecture and the hook makes the information last longer with the students #HipHopEd
I fall in love with hip hop every day as I drive from queens to bed stuy for work and think about the legends who came from these streets and those who could be growing up there right now #HipHopEd
My uncle came home after doing 15 years in prison and he gave me Public Enemy’s “Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black” album. It was all up hill from there #HipHopEd
Not sure when it happened, I have always had an appreciation for the lyricism & the music. I'm in love with HH now because of the people & the community #HipHopEd
Whenever I hear one of my non-hip-hop friends say "I really like that line" or "I can tell you've improved in your dancing" it really goes a long way. #HipHopEd

I fall in love with hip hop all over again when I see how meaningful different artists are in different cities. Never forget hearing an old school Lil Wayne jointin a New Orleans bar, the whole place went nuts!! #hiphoped
Riding home from NYC after doing an awesome training @Flocabulary and I get hit with the link to @blackthought 10 min and 55 sec freestyle. I fell in love with Hip-Hop all over again #hiphoped
You ain’t said nothing but a word! I teach a class called “Achievement/Motivation.” This is literally our textbook. We use it the entire semester. #HipHopEd
Never feel more love than when I'm at a hip-hop concert where local artists are supporting each other or when attending the #HipHopEd conference, so much love & energy in the HH community!
Thanks for the luv cuz and @accordin2jo. Jocquetta brought me back to my high school to speak. It was such an honor that I will always remember. #HipHopEd

Fell in love with hip hop, growing up in the 90's. My uncle and cousins were b-boys and I wanted to emulate them. I also heard "I Used to Love H.E.R." by @common. #hiphoped
I like when I see different styles of breaking when I travel and then I have new content to integrate into my breaking. Ex: All the flips the breakers do in the NY streets. Don't really see that much in the SouthEast. #HipHopEd
@IAm_DocMcLean allow me to virtually connect you with my Cuz @feliciapride Cuz, your book is the text book used for a class being taught in NYC #HipHopEd

I'm at @RandallstownHS now. Would love to have you visit. My Ss would love you. I just read from my autographed copy of your book...yesterday. #Hiphoped
Sure is. And the students love it. One of my favorite class sessions is taught from the chapter feat. The Fugees’ “Ready or Not.” We watch the video and everything. #HipHopEd
As a Mexican-American, listening to HH in Spanish for the first time felt like falling in love again in a different language #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/BqvTfYe1Jp
If you grab this book by my Cuz @feliciapride you will fall in love with Hip-Hop again and you will have a great tool to engage your students with #HipHopEd Volume 2 needs to be written https://t.co/yGkmdpitZL:

Let's never forget when ALL of Philly was on top the Hip Hop game! 🎤 #FreeMeekMill#HipHopEd This gives the opportunity to teach students about criminal justice reform
After having endured misogyny from the local HH scene, in 2013 I found a Hip Hop and Feminism Course Syllabus by @MHarrisPerry That's when I realized I'd found love again. #hiphoped

Albums like @icecube’s Lethal Injection woke me up to a new sense of consciousness. That album was my introduction to the Nation of Islam and to hearing someone directly challenge America’s society through their lyricism #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Today on MSNBC one of the hosts said re: the lies from the WH, "Lets borrow from HH when we say they can't stop won't stop! #EverybodyLovesHH
Another pivotal moment in my love affair with hip hop... the first time I heard “Dreams and Nightmares.” My friends and I refer to it as a sermon. #HipHopEd

@tdj6899 Peace my brother! Not sure if you all are aware that the person who popularized the term HIP HOP sudden passed last week. Thought it would be good for your students to know about hip hop pioneer DJ/MC #LovebugStarski#hiphoped
I always had to think about my racial identity growing up and still do. As a non-Black Asian American, Hip hop speaks to my authenticity, and sometimes inauthenticity, as a minority in a white-dominated society. #hiphoped

being from atlanta, and hearing OutKast’s “elevators” for the first time was surreal. the imagery from the verses were so descriptive of what makes the city unique, and the storytelling paralleled the uphil battle for southern hip-hop at the time #HipHopEd
“In my physical I can express through song/Delete stress like Motrin, then extend strong (@Nas )”- Lyricism that speaks to the healing and empowerment dimensions of Hip Hop #HipHopEd

And yes, that is me dancing, wearing a shirt that reads LOVE. Most girls in the video have been my allies in feminist projects and fronts. #HipHopEd#HipHopEdMX
@Nas “Illmatic” album showed me that we must reconsider the possible sites where intellectual work occurs. It becomes necessary to look beyond formal locations such as universities and literary circles, and look to hip-hop culture #HipHopEd
Finding this group & falling in love with hip-hop has made this PhD journey so much better. I have found my passion & I cannot imagine going forward with my research without hip-hop #HipHopEd
@tdj6899 as you all probably already know, it was the late MC Keith Cowboy from GrandMaster Flash & The Furious Five who originated the term HIP HOP. #HipHopEd
I fall in love with HipHop when I attend my beautiful 64 Year Old wife workshop with white school teachers and they present creative raps at the end #hiphoped#hiphopdev
I remember having my students find their favorite instrumental and I had them create and demonstrate their learning through song. Each year they were chosen to present in front of the entire school. #HipHopEd
We are being blessed tonight with the presence of @MCDebbieD in the chat. Please follow one of the pioneers who is still contributing to the culture on a daily basis. Let's honor them while they are here and can hear our hearts #HipHopEd

Another milestone was realizing my research trajectory in @gjladson class on culturally relevant pedagogy. Her support & guidance is/was everything. #hiphoped
Das Efx are so important to the culture. They didn't have to make perfect sense. They had flow, wit, & originality. They make me appreciate a lot of the new kids #HipHopEd
Hip-Hop provides a space where “the least of these” can become the voice for a generation. We are so honored to be a part of culture that has gone from the block to the boardroom and the club to the classroom #HipHopEd
We fall in love with Hip-Hop every Tuesday night from 9-10 because whenever we thing our chat has run its course we get inspired by new contributors to our cyber cypher. #HipHopEd
I always had to think about my racial identity growing up and still do. As a non-Black Asian American, Hip hop speaks to my authenticity, and sometimes inauthenticity, as a minority in a white-dominated society. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd If you haven't watched #BeatStreet please do and check out my Sis as well as so many others whose shoulders we teach on every time we bring Hip-Hop into a classroom.

#HipHopEd “And while you imitating Al Capone, I’ll be Nina Simone and defecating on your microphone.” I have an undying love for these lyrics. Un-dy-ing.
I began to love Hip-Hop in a different way once my HH Mom @DrHicksHarper showed me how I can get paid for the conversations that I perfected inside of dorm rooms at @HowardU and on benches in East New York #hiphoped#HipHopDev

The hip-hop culture is like any other pedagogy spaces such as churches and mosques, barbershops and black bookstores. Within this genre, black people have been able to share alternate forms of knowledge and affirm their humanity within relatively supportive communities #HipHopEd
In 2016, I became inebriated with HipHop.I decided to pursue my #doctoratedegree in curriculum & teaching so could I study hip hop as culturally responsive pedagogy #HipHopEd
Although I've been sitting still the last few years 🤦, traveling across the globe and being able to connect and build with folks thru the multi-faceted, dynamic, multi-lingual lens of Hip-hop has changed my life. THIS culture always been the common thread. 🎤 #hiphoped
I get it too. The self-erasure, the fitting in. Then HH comes and challenges you and questions you and you can still hide but you gain knowledge about your own hiding. #HipHopEd
I fall in love with hip-hop when @AVTHEGREAT takes over teaching my pre-service teachers about hip-hop culture, challenging their perceptions. Love watching the rapper become the professor!#HipHopEd

Asian Americans are accepted but also excluded from society. That reflected my identity with hip hop and my social circles growing up in grade school. Also, hip hop is still used as a counterculture in Asian communities where there is appropriation and Anti-Blackness. #HipHopEd
What keeps me loving HipHop is doing the work with Son @tdj6899, reading @chrisemdin’s constructs & following the logic, & engaging w #hiphoped ‘s participants’ brilliance @ the power of the culture
Hip-Hop provided me a blueprint to have a blended family
Hip-Hop provided me a blueprint to effectively communicate in any setting
Hip-Hop provided me a blueprint to create as opposed to comply
Hip-Hop provided me a blueprint to live when others wanted me to die
#hiphoped
HH showed us we could love our momma, our culture, our struggles, our triumphs, our demons, our saints, our heroes and our villians. HH showed us we could love ourselves unapologetically #HipHopEd
