We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
A1: Truly listening to the students and finding out their interests. Beyond that showing that I care. Once they know that they are more willing to partner and work together with you as a team #ECEChat
A1. Utilize every moment to engage with the students, not at them. Our travel time on the trail is a great time to have conversations - just have to make sure I rotate where I am (front, middle, back) to make sure I am connecting with everyone #ECEChat

A1: #ecechat#HackingEarlyLearning I have really been working on listening instead of reacting when dealing with behaviors in the classroom. I read @ConsciousD book "Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline" and it has helped guide me as I work to change.
A1: I always keep in mind that all behavior is communication. What is the child trying to communicate? What need/want are they trying to convey? I build relationships from the moment they walk in the door with positive praise and hugs. #ECEchat
A1. Play WITH students during choice time/playtime. It's easy to want to use the time to wrap up other things, but it's the best time to connect with the youngest learners - you play with them once and they seek you out the rest of the day. It shows it matters to them #ECEChat
A2: planned transitions as well as procedures and routines. If you don’t help students move efficiently you will waste hours of learning. Name the expectation, and practice makes perfect #ECEchat
A2: Transitions are a BIG struggle for me this year. I have tried and continue to use timers, beat the teacher, music, helping, staying positive...#ecechat#HackingEarlyLearning
A1 Spending time to learn about each student. Take time to be silly together. Play together. Lunch bunch: small groups eat with me in the class at lunch and we would talk about our families and lives. Show them you care when they have various emotions. #ECEChat
A2: Transitions in the classroom can be tricky - giving kids a few minutes warning before they are expected to be ready for the next activity helps them to prepare. Also building routines helps kids to know what to expect next, and helps with the flow of the day. #ecechat
A1 By connecting with students over things that interest them. Centers, meal times, and recess are excellent times to play, interact with, and bond with students. #ECEchat
I like how you mention differentiating how you connect with kids. Some like hugs, others prefer a fist bump. It is so important to know or kids and what motivates them. #ECEchat
A2. Start by reducing unnecessary ones. Students will be more successful during the necessary ones. Reduce wait time during them - if they are ready, let them move on to the next thing. And always state/reference the expectation for the transition. Provide visuals too. #ECEChat
That is a great point! Helping students to understand what they are expected to do makes transitions much smoother and allows more time for other activities. #ECEchat
Love this! Showing you care during various emotions is key! It can be a challenge with everything else going on in the room, but it's crucial! #ECEChat
A2: Expectations and consistency are the key to transitions. I use a wireless doorbell to transition reading centers. I also use callbacks to get there attention and songs to remind them of what there job is when we are moving to the next task. #ECEChat
I love this! When I visit during center time, I love to play with kids. They are so eager for adults to play with them. Lunch time is also a great way to connect with them. #ECEchat
A1: No matter what age group we teach, allowing our students to know who we are and that we care about them will always be the way to build positive relationships. Our students will always remember the time we spend w/ them and not always the content. Bottom Line! #ECEChat
A2 Have transition tools in place such as chants, traffic flow patterns, lineup procedures, etc. Practice so students know the expectations and are prepared to transition successful #ecechat
A2: Transitions can make or break your instruction. Give kids visual advance warnings and be proactive and creative about what's coming next. Also, utilize cognitively challenging transitions connected to content and including music and movement. #ecechat
It's amazing how much they love/want adults to play with them. Doing so shows that their play time is important. And lunch is also a great time to connect! Students often request adults to sit by them so they can share a story or talk about their day. #ECEChat
A1 I hope to build positive relationships with Ss by getting to know their individual strengths and interests and incorporating those things into the classroom #ECEChat
A1 Use specific praise recognizing what is right- “ I love how you are waiting patiently in line with your hands to yourself” instead of “ You are doing a good job” reinforces exactly what you want to occur. #ecechat
Once you have routines established your classroom will run like a well oiled machine. It also creates an environment where students can be independent because they are less reliant on adults always telling them what to do. #ECEchat
A3. In district @katyphinney out of district I call my teaching BFF’s back home who are all now administrators with lots of behavior management and SPED knowledge #ECEchat
A2 💠Create familiar routines associated w/ all daily transitions
🎖️Practice routines, make practice a game
⚠️Use visuals to support students' understanding of what's happening & expected
🎤Sing songs & use rhymes to signal routines & remind students of expectations #ECEchat
A2 Cues that are modeled and practiced. Lights, clap chant, chime, rhyme, songs. For st who struggle with certain transitions, set up a plan-timer, pre signal, check in & transition them individually before the whole group. #ECEChat
A3 - Having people to go to when things don't go right is a great rersource to have! I often talk to my grade level team and we can bounce ideas off each other and develop strategies to use next time. #ecechat
A3: I am blessed to have an amazing Grade Level and when things are no right I ask them for advise on how they do things. This is very helpful. If I am still struggling our admin are amazing too and I will sit down and make a plan with them. #EceChat#HackingEarlyLearning
A3: we are fortunate to have a paraprofessional so they are our go to person. We also work collaboratively on our teams to help each other when needed, during PLCs, etc. We all communicate very openly. #ECEChat
A1 Positive relationships must be consistent and take time. We refer to them like hefty bank accounts-you must positively deposit into them frequently! #ecechat
A3: For me, I am always reflecting on how to make PD more applicable and beneficial. Reflection, many times, includes collaboration with colleagues. #ECEchat
A3 I ask my professors who taught in a variety of K-12 settings for many years! It's a blessing to learn from quality educators who have many great strategies and ideas. Perks of still being in college! #ECEchat
That is a great point! It is great to have people who have a lot of experience and strategies to incorporate their ideas into your own classroom! #ECEchat
Okay PIA-here comes the season of special events and changes to the day-how are you going to sustain these systems and supports you have built? #ECEChat
Agree! As the only EC specialist at my ESC, I really have to focus on building my PLC so that I can continue to grow, learn, and improve my practice! #ecechat
CTA - The arrival of winter brings a great time to relearn the transition of getting ready to go outside. Lots of visuals and verbal reminders of what they need to do, along with modeling when I put on my own gear. #ECEChat
A3 little late but got in a great workout! I have two friends from s former school who continue to inspire me, push me and steer me back to my roots. When I feel down or "lost in the shuffle" i call one of them. #ECEchat
CTA- It’s important to review expectations after seasonal breaks. It’s equally important to reinvest in relationships after those breaks too. Get off the seat and on the feet time 😉#ecechat
A3- With Pre-K, collaboration with my paraprofessional, who is phenomenal, and my fellow pre-K teammates help with exchange of ideas and looking at things from a different lens. #ecechat
A1- Building Ss leaders; using positive, productive, and uplifting language, even when redirecting or providing correction. Important to maintain high expectations, while building on student's self-concept. #ecechat
A3: I am one that if there is a problem I will research to make it right. I am inspired by Twitter Chats, Instagram feeds, and Pinterest Boards. As I research I put together what will work for my class. #ECEchat#HackingEarlyLearning
A2- Making transition times adequate. Give advanced notice of transition times, and give time for transitions to take place effectively. Fine line between rushing and taking too long. Balance. Respect. #ecechat
I agree! All of the festivities and break-up in routine can make it hard to maintain regularity at this time of year. It is important to have a clear routine in place as kids get back into the routine, but also to have patience as they readjust. #ECEchat
You are a perfect example of a connected educator. When I started to connect with others who shared my interests and passions, I grew by leaps and bounds. #ECEchat
Thanks #ECEchat PLN! You inspire me and push me to be better everyday for the teachers I work with and the 1,600+ #lisdpk students that we serve! Have a great rest of the week leading up to Thanksgiving!!! #prek
Having a Thanksgiving feast for our preten center and learning how to set up a table and how to say please, thank you and may you pass the.... #lawsome
A1: connect, connect, connect. I try to commit to spending at least a few minutes of uninterrupted time with each of my students with the sole purpose of building relationship #ECEchat
