A1 For some, there's the loss of the illusion that systemic racism is not an issue in this country. But a chance for growth.
-
I was just exploring this question with teachers and so much came up. Loved oe
-
Thank you! Good to be here.
-
As they say, "Better late than never." Welcome, Sara (I like the way you spell your name--the right way! ;)

-
-
A1: Loss of control. Loss of faith.
-
-
We all experience loss in different ways. I feel many children experience loss due to poverty.
-
Yes, but the feed isn't working great in Twitter. Try TweetDeck?
-
A1 I've been thinking about how to address current events with kinders at a private school ... address isn't the right word
-
A1: I think loss is relative to who you're talking to.
-
Q1. The losses I feel are personal - cancer, heart attacks, the state of how people are treating one another in our nation.
-
A1 Loss of trust, innocence, loss of belief, faith
-
A1 Of course, there's the loss of lives, holes in the hearts especially of loved ones, others affected, all who care.
-
If you want to respond to a question (Q) all you do is put an A (meaning answer) and then type away. WELCOME to
-
A1) Loss of parents, for me I struggle w/this tremendously still, loss of pet, loss of child, loss of colleague/friend
-
A1 Loss of being able to turn it off, step away, take break 2 process &reflect.
-
-
A1 (part 2) Being bombarded 24/7 w/ images &updates hard,esp for children
-
This is such a difficult question to answer. We all feel and experience loss for different reasons and different ways.
-
Really tough. Necessarily share gory details? Just teach respect, compassion, & empathy? https://t.co/tXEMbSOKD4
-
-
A1 I've been thinking about how to address current events with kinders at a private school ... address isn't the right word
-
the ?s r posed as A1, A2, etc.You respond with your thoughts using Q1, Q2..You can also respond to others answers
-
A1: the illusion that progress on race relations was further along the paradigm than the reality of its current evolution
-
A1 For some, I think there's also a loss of hope - or at least a diminution.
-
A1.1: there is a macro/micro picture. The nation is reeling from recent events while Ss & their families suffer daily.
-
-
Thanks, I think I have it figured out! I appreciate the help.
-
Scott from Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle lurking from the daughter's ( she's 30) slow pitch game
-
Yes! It's a great time to teach with all of our tech and ability to connect globally
-
We will talk about this tonight in hopes we can share ideas and resources and most of all support one another.
-
Yes. This is definitely a good point. That's why there is not just one singular answer.
-
Yes! I have a 7-year-old and struggle with this often. https://t.co/kRzKVJfobm

-
A1 (part 2) Being bombarded 24/7 w/ images &updates hard,esp for children
-
A1 One friend who decided, after 25 years, that she was done with our friendship. I miss her but I accept her decision.
-
Hi Brian. Glad to have you here in tonight!
-
Great point and something for us all to remember as well.
-
I've talked it thru a little with my 7yo. He picks up on too much now to leave him out of conversation.
-
I also have experienced a loss of faith in myself over the past three years. Working to do better; so much better to do.
-
A1 I think many children r experiencing the loss of social conversation & connection with family due to social media & tech
-
-
Always great to have you here--whether lurking or participating. You and Rocky and Bullwinkle are always welcome!
-
There is also loss of perspective. Unfortunately this is easy to lose when we get caught up.
-
We need to do more connecting for sure!!!
-
Even as Ps when we consciously shut it off, it is turned on somewhere else.Restaurants, elevators, waiting rooms etc.
-
My 7yo has the bare basics, enough that he was satisfied and stopped asking Qs...for now.
-
Yes. I feel comfortable w the teaching empathy and respect piece but not as much w what Ss will ask
-
A1 I miss my dad who died December 9, 2000, but at the same time he doesn't feel that far away.
-
That is very true, a loss for one is not for someone else.
-
I went through this as well. So sorry for your loss. (Glad you are joining tonight)
-
Q2: How are you addressing--or helping others address--(in home or school) the concept of loss and/or resilience?
-
I agree with all that you've said here, Leslie. It's so hard right now. https://t.co/Fy6aa5Jz0g
-
-
A1: Loss of respect, dignity, freedom, life, family, trust, words, hope. This is what I feel in Canada as I watch the news.
-
I teach empathy, respect, compassion, patience, & love. Answer ?s regularly. But, we don't watch CNN together
-
The truest way to teach empathy is through learning the realities of our s’s and them learning ours. https://t.co/HUzLHKHySH
-
-
Yes. I feel comfortable w the teaching empathy and respect piece but not as much w what Ss will ask
-
Such a poignant picture. Thoughts with you.
-
Thanks, Sara! Great to be here!
-
Ah, the ?s. Ran into the same thing with 7th graders during the Mayan end of the world thing

Q2: How are you addressing--or helping others address--(in home or school) the concept of loss and/or resilience?
-
-
There is nothing more powerful than a story.
-
A1 Since my dad was my fellow pixie,I planted variety of coneflower, pixie coneflower right next to my house. He is nearby.
-
A2: I am trying to read as much as I can, to gain greater understanding. But, overwhelming.
-
It's very difficult. Loss is really the umbrella over everything I feel when I think about recent events.
-
A2 Trying to understand what others need and reach out to them. Also leaning in harder in social justice work in general.
-
A2: It always starts w/ positive relationships. A strong, authentic relationship allows for honest, open conversations
-
A2 great tip I just learned in a writing lesson: answer the question, but ONLY the Q. Adults have tendency to go further
-
There is resilience power in creating a space where students can raise their genuine questions
-
Q2. I find it challenging to always be positive and cheerlead these days. I try to spread as much positive, but...
-
A2 Thinking ahead to class conversations on race, patriarchy, homo/trans-antagonism, classism, ableism, etc.
-
Being resilient in a situation of loss must be drawn from situations where we needed to be strong and reminding ourselves.
-
-
Very true. Same with discussing problems. You don't always have to propose a solution https://t.co/6Wa1Wyk5On
-
-
A2 great tip I just learned in a writing lesson: answer the question, but ONLY the Q. Adults have tendency to go further
-
I have been coordinating teacher workshops on writing to heal and coping with loss with other teachers
-
A2 with Ss, I've helped with family deaths and classmates moving. very local - lots of talking & sharing & listening
-
Absolutely! https://t.co/sFEwPWsN4a
-
-
There is resilience power in creating a space where students can raise their genuine questions
-
A2 Consider the facts known so far, w/ neutrality. But also consider how it impacts Ss
-
They need to learn how to deal with loss and be able to adapt to new situations and move on in a healthy way.
-
Explicitly teaching resilience to S's using local examples
-
A2 Needed to do that more so two years ago than now. I coulda been lost. We are grateful every day.
-
A2)My mom died, Ss made all these cards, hugged me a lot, hard keeping it together, one S said "ur mom is w/ you in your ❤️"
-
perhaps it's more oral conversation They may have more challenge reading body language/facial expressions etc
-
A2:Acknowledging, validating their loss.
-
All people need to feel that there is a place where they belong. Building those spaces builds capacity for resilience.
-
S's also benefit from understanding that loss affects us in a variety of ways and build empathy for one another
-
Yes. My kids create our units - one reason why identity (including race, gender, sexuality, etc.) an annual topic.
-
A2: For my senior Ss I am mostly an ear/shoulder. For my own young kids, we talk it through. Every Q they ask.
-
-
A2 One thing though...what if I have a relapse? Need to be prepared.
-
Validating is so very impt!!!
-
A2b) I'll never forget that as long as I live, our loved ones are always in our hearts
-
. Stick with observations/facts and leave off any inferences/interpretations, yes!
-
-
Loss of hope. Loss of faith. Loss of understanding...
-
A2 Kids of color r living w/racism every day. They need 2 b able to talk openly & work for change, if they wish to.
-
A2 Two years ago I showed my daughters my cancerous breast. I think it helped them to see what needed to happen.
-
Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec urban HS, Ss carry burdens we can't imagine. They come evry day.I shdr Ts jump on Ss 4 not brngng pncl

But then there's fear of anticipated loss. And anger. Witness this brilliant students' poem:

Creating a consistently safe place for kids and giving time for self-expression and play. - Elem Teacher

Absolutely. And white kids as well, though for different (to some extent overlapping) reasons. https://t.co/jloTyktHpD

-
A2 Kids of color r living w/racism every day. They need 2 b able to talk openly & work for change, if they wish to.
-
Also consider this, if evidence is presented that contrasts, how do we believe which is true?
-
Q3: Curious to know...How has your school or district responded to the current events?
-
A2 In a way I don't think you can ever really prepare yourself or others for loss. What to expect. How to cope.
-
Or how do we learn to accept the truth, no matter how painful it will be?
-
A3: We have summer break now, so there hasn't been the opportunity. Allows for some distance when it comes up in fall.
-
A3: It hasn't. Which is adding to my feelings. Greatly disappointed. On the other hand, my college alma mater has.
-
Q3 How has school/district responded to current events? https://t.co/3j41xWDV4c
-
-
Q3: Curious to know...How has your school or district responded to the current events?
-
Especially when contrasting evidence can coexist - e.g. POC/White experiences with police.
-
True for today's current events in the world, any day in at work, and every day with students https://t.co/WSaFjwnVXk
-
-
A2: It always starts w/ positive relationships. A strong, authentic relationship allows for honest, open conversations
-
A3 Husband and I talk about it between ourselves and with friends. It is hard to really wrap my mind around.
-
Agree. One can recognize patterns from the past, but the future is still unknown and unfamiliar.
-
-
from Sara
Q3: Curious to know...How has your school or district responded to the current events?
-
Ousd worked in collaboration with local organizations to provide safe spaces for community dialogue
-
Exactly. And how do we respond responsibly w/o lashing out?
-
I totally understand! And if WE can't wrap our heads around it--how do our kids?
-
A3 Nothing yet, but we are on summer vacation. Things have been addressed at other times though.
-
Safe spaces and dialogue--two important things to support resilience!
-
What college did you attend again (sorry!), and what was their response?
-
A3: What Clint says is the same for us. It may not even come up: distance and we are not in the USA. https://t.co/A1Pv1eHoZU
-
-
A3: We have summer break now, so there hasn't been the opportunity. Allows for some distance when it comes up in fall.
-
A3: To date, they have not. Many are tempted to insulate and isolate themselves in the face of tragedy and loss.
-
We teach resilience, problem solving & independence by letting Ss work through ?s & problems
-
Yes, I'd be interest to know too.
-
That's sort of us too - although I have blogged a few times on , , and more.
-
Nice. Would love to know more on how this is done where you are.
-
Comes down to respecting each person's experience & core humanity. I cling to that principle in tough times.
-
I felt like I shouldn't blog about it, like I'd be taking away from where the attention needs to be?
-
A3. We're so small that we have no one here to consider it. However, we just lost a parcel tax, so we're feeling a loss now.
-
Sorry, & peeps, but I do need to sign off early. Look forward to reviewing chat later! Thanks for the chat!
-
aww! I still have Ss made cards from when my husband got sick last year. I can't bear to read them
-
Not that anyone actually reads my blog though...heh.
-
White T's need some straight talk about how to create community & solidarity 4 SS facing things the T does not.
-
Thanks for joining while you could.
-
Guidance dept reaches out, some addressed in advisories, parent information sent home
-
A3. We are expecting a release of suicide cluster research coming out this summer, so a heightened sense will emerge locally.
-
The Truth is also ways the truth. Not always visible and more often not ubiquitously palatable. https://t.co/oBTZIp2NqB
-
-
Also consider this, if evidence is presented that contrasts, how do we believe which is true?
-
I get that. Don't want to center myself. Yet, I feel zero school response would be wrong.
-
That's good. Wd. like to hear more. We did that after Oscar Grant. Not aware of it since.
-
A3 we are on summer break but race class and gender takes a safe space for a courageous conversation
-
These events remind me that I'm "lucky" 2 have white privilege.I've had encounters where whiteness saved me.
-
Q3: We are on summer break. Counselors have been made available in the past and are available in the summer I'm sure.
-
Leslie, I think many thoughts & perspectives presented help raise awareness
-
Yes. Well, my own readership is pretty teeny. :-)
-
Laurie having to leave early tonight. Wishing everyone a good week.
-
Q4 next... (but feel free to answer any Q--just put the number by the A so we know which one you are responding to.
-
Q4: How can the concept of resilience be connected and/or apply to the current events?
-
I have had encounters with police that, had I been POC, would have meant my arrest instead of walking away.
-
...and a good week to you, Laurie! Thanks for stopping by
-
A3: We, Webster PTSA, are planning programming for Mental Health Awareness, Healthy dating/ relationships,

Truth in tough times, sunny times, all times, for all people, always. https://t.co/S3Uwgnk0x1

-
Comes down to respecting each person's experience & core humanity. I cling to that principle in tough times.
-
I believe this is true. Variety supports stability in living systems anyway. I need to think more.
-
I like this. A4 But, how do we swallow the bitter pill of truth? I think that's when Resilienece comes in
-
There are a lot of very "woke" people in OUSD. Hopefully some of them are doing it
-
-
A4 We need to show empathy and compassion for Stand up. Not be silent.

A4: I am recognizing the importance of .

Absolutely! I talk a lot about "Taking Care of the Caretaker" in my workshops and in my book
-
A4: Without resilience in the face of everything society cannot move forward. Together we must move forward.
-
-
Meant to spell *Resilience. lol https://t.co/UqsaXb2RKR
-
-
I like this. A4 But, how do we swallow the bitter pill of truth? I think that's when Resilienece comes in
-
We are a very forgiving bunch at Sometimes our fingers get away from us as we type. ;)
-
I found myself battling hopelessness and powerlessness and found new purpose in conversation with colleagues
-
A4 I think different people's experiences and feelings lead to different needs; resilience takes different forms.
-
A4 Our Ss are already resilient! I admire their courage to take part in school when they are often raising themselves.
-
Support with/ among others is so important in times like this. Caring relationships are the #1 protective factor
-
-
A4 We also need to problematize the dominant narratives students are encountering that reinforce false notions
-
A4 Time to offer comfort. Time to stop looking the other way. Time for mutual recognition of each other's humanity.
-
-
A4 To me, resilience comes not just in keeping on keeping on, but also in digging in and fighting harder.
-
A4 The concentration & globalization of wealth is so huge that it wd be easy to give up. Need resilience to keep struggling
-
A teacher in recently presented on the importance of resisting "a single story" presentation on anything
-
A4: Must Foster our communities, school and town, for people to tap resilience, feel secure, willing to trust one another
-

Truth like medicine may need to be administered in non-universal forms to be effective. https://t.co/nhnfyBDLQd

-
I like this. A4 But, how do we swallow the bitter pill of truth? I think that's when Resilienece comes in
-
A4: Resilience can help us overcome the effects of current events and allow us to move in a positive direction
-
I like this idea. Can you really be resilient w/out considering more than 1 perspective?
-
A4. There are SO many amazing examples of resiliency...sharing those are critical. Its just finding PC ways of doing so.
-
-
Q5: What are you going to do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
I like how you said that. We can't lie down and become defeated. We must stand up for our beliefs.
-
I taught my 5th graders using localized examples and family stories. S's can find powerful examples in their own homes!
-
A4. One thing I do is eblasts...and I include articles about success, stress, resiliency. And I just doubled our counselors!
-
-
A5 Is it okay to say, I don't really know....?
-
-
Thank you. Agreed; if we don't stand up for our beliefs, why have them at all?! :-)
-
-
Also...if anyone has any resources to share, please do so here on

A5 I'm going to keep on keeping on. And I'm going to keep digging in and fighting harder.
-
Hi Sara, we have sent an email to you re . Thanks so much!
-
A5 I'm having fun planning 1st month of kinder - respect and empathy like normal w emphasis on connectedness & diversity
-
a5 check in w/ my teenage son to see what questions he has and what he's thinking. Do some writing, maybe blog.
-
A5: Hug my kids tight, appreciate nature, go for a run, keep up to date on events, and PD reading. Keep on keeping on.
-
-
A5 Probably water plants. Help them be resilient. They are living beings too.
