my mind as well, I am thinking about how to create awesomeness in my classroom while I am in the shower
-
-
A1. To foster a love of learning and to inspire people to use their knowledge to improve their world.
-
A1. Big question for a tweet. Purpose is to create life long passionate learners who find meaning and joy in whatever they do.
-
A1: Many adults see it as serving the same purpose it served them. Students want/deserve something different/better.
-
Hoping you can make tonight.
-
A1 The purpose isn't to have babysitting, sometimes I wonder if there is a purpose.
-
hoping you can make tonight.
-
A1: One of the things schools should do is be a safe haven for exercising brains & spreading wings
-
Hope you don’t miss this week. You were pretty shaken last week.
-
a1) for me, learning. from the point of view of many of my students, getting a good grade.
-
A1: Ignite a passion for learning. A place to create, explore, grow together.
-
Right...we often teach how we were taught.
-
A1: I think the answer changes greatly depending on who you ask.It should be a place where Ss come to explore, discover, and learn
-
A1: It shouldn't. To prepare Ss to think critically and in diverse situations.
-
A1 - In my opinion, we don't spend enough time getting all of our stakeholders on to the same page about purpose, mission/etc
-
yes! And create well rounded people that positively contribute to our world and make a difference!
-
A1. As former Dean of Students, the purpose is the same. You want Ss to make choices, take responsibility, find meaning in life
-
a1) i think learning is the goal of admin and colleges. Grades seem really important to the parents though
-
A1: continued…. we should all have a unified purpose
-
A1 - We visited this summer, and their mission statement is plastered everywhere, and all stakeholders live it
-
A1 Schools should educate to empower students, create life long learners
-
Wouldn't it be awesome, a really beneficial to learning if ALL parties agreed on a purpose for school!
-
True! We won’t be able to let students learn in the new world if we are pulled back to the old one by the old students.
-
A1: Unfortunately I don't think all those parties listed share the same view
-
A1: The easy answer is learning, but I guess I would challenge Ts to think about what learning truly looks like with their Ss.
-
Sorry joining late Greenwood IN 6-8 band - love pirating ideas from great teachers
-
I sometimes wonder if students learn in spite of school not because of it.
-
A1: the purpose is to foster love of learning and creative free thinking people ready to make the world a better place.
-
-
A1 learn creative & critical thinking to reinforce the desire for life long learning and the search for meaning
-
absolutely! One build on what is best for Ss, not for who pays the bills...
-
Love this answer… Way to inspire and help moving students to becoming the best versions of themselves.
-
-
A1: give Ts and Ss a place to dream, explore, and achieve
-
Big start! A1: To give Ss a place to discover/explore their passions and interests and learn how to pursue them.
-
-
Love these words. Man I wish I could teach with you… Want to move to Wisconsin?
-
Couldn't agree with this statement more.
-
Wish I could stay longer, but my son's hockey just finished. Need to help free him from the armor.
-
right down to the core… Great answer! https://t.co/aJ2qdKKqCI
-
-
A1: I think the answer changes greatly depending on who you ask.It should be a place where Ss come to explore, discover, and learn
-
from the book A place to be curious enough to discover their passions"
-
Lots of people jumping in! Welcome...we're just moving on to Q2. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
-
A1: I feel we all want to develop Ss into life long learners but how we get there is where differences arise
-
-
A1. No one ever remembers who taught them how to add fractions. They always remember how you treated them.
-
A1: In my classroom the purpose of school is to develop 21st century skills to help them be a better version of themselves
-
Very well said Jim. https://t.co/0pnWTSP3Vk
-
-
A1: the purpose is to foster love of learning and creative free thinking people ready to make the world a better place.
-
A quote very similar was taped to my desk the first 4 years of my teaching. Habit was formed. New quote now!
-
A2 - If by grade we mean feedback, learning requires good feedback. If by grade we mean a letter, many times I believe this hinders
-
A2: These days I'm feeling more & more that grades hinder learning. People involved are blinded by them & lose the focus of learning.
-
A2 I have the feeling that grades should only be a nail in the wall to hang your hat on at the end of the day.
-
Love this answer Jim… Glad to have another Milwaukee Teacher here. Take a look at for great PD this summer.
-
A3: when used appropriately they help gauge progress. When used punitively, it deflates the spirit.
-
A2: If Ss can get an A without trying, why bother putting forth best effort? Expect an A, get an A without trying, is that success?
-
a2) I think they hinder, it's too easy to look at only the grade when they get a test back is the grade, not what they did wrong
-
A2: Grades help learning if focused on growth. Grades hinder learning if focused on compliance.
-
Grades motivate only a very small number of ss. need to figure out what motivates each student
-
A1: for many of my Ss school is a place they can feel safe, eat a warm meal, and have people who care about their success
-
-
A2: Grades give finality to learning. Learning is never final.
-
Glad you could join us tonight!
-
I agree, but this can be a difficult line to define sometimes!
-
I agree! I think it's also important to model this by learning (& failing) with your students
-
A2: I believe they hinder the process of learning. Ss are scared to fail cuz it will neg affect grades. You lose the exp of learning
-
Q2) The worst thing is when Ss do work for the grade alone. Learning has 2 be more dynamic/worthwhile and speak to a bigger audience
-
Although feedback is important for growth, grades can serve some use in proficiency based progress
-
-
Welcome to hope you enjoyed the book and stick with the chat. It is a great group of teachers here.
-
A2: A letter grade tells me nothing, specific feedback to help move learning forward is way more useful.
-
Thanks! Ultimately, easier said than done. We have a system & stakeholders (parents, admin, colleges) who expect grades
-
A2: When we confuse feedback and grades, I feel we are hindering. We forget that any expert was once a beginner
-
So true and often not thought about...for some Ss, school is a refuge!
-
-
A2 If grads show progress they can demonstrate growth. Paired w mastery systems even 'poor' Ss can see they are learning 1/
-
A2: If Ss put forth their best effort, take the initiative to ask questions, & still get a C, is that “bad”?
-
A2 cont. The Ss of today shouldn't have to be shanghaied as pirates on a ship to false pretenses
-
I agree that we need to show the students we are in the process of stretching ourselves and learning
-
best response to the question. I never mention grades in my comments. Emphasize skills and behavior.
-
A2 that's why I moved to level up grading /2
-
I agree ss think that once there is a grade they are finished learning.
-
Simply said, yet powerfully true! https://t.co/tx1ijJHz2A
-
-
A2: Grades give finality to learning. Learning is never final.
-
for them it probably is. Not in my opinion though. https://t.co/Z9a583orFX
-
-
A2: If Ss put forth their best effort, take the initiative to ask questions, & still get a C, is that “bad”?
-
Absolutely! Feedback should be 100% of the focus. It is simply human to take a look at a number or letter and stop looking
-
A2: I want my Ss to feel comfortable to fail, but grades make failure negative instead of a step towards success.
-
no. As long as your feedback explains the C.
-
Whoooo...grades get me all hot and bothered! Let's move on to Q3!
-
I think they hinder. Reminds me of Credit Score system. They say it helps users but it really is built for the system.
-
-
A2 used as benchmarks, grades can be helpful.
-
Grades alone are also dry & misleading. The main key = real life relationships where you can discuss growth and constructive feedback
-
Grades were necessary for factory style education which is outdated. Now grades are more for the Ts and districts than Ss.
-
A2: Ss need feedback to learn/grow. 1:1 is best BUT many Ps/Ts see grades as the ONLY qualifying method to express Ss understanding.
-
-
A2 unfortunately grades create an "is it on the test mentality" for students which really stifles innovation and growth
-
This is another thing I like about the game system that helps develop. Students have endless possibilities for development!
-
-
That's what I love RE: gamification. Done well,it creates a tighter feedback loop. More feedback = more learning
-
A3: Oh, that's a tough one!
-
A2 Grades hurt. I pulled the Lee Sheldon this year. Many uncomfortable Ss & parents, just told them to do best & grade would be fine
-
Can I say Curiosity and Resiliance tie for me? or do I have to pick one?
-
well said. People before content.
-
A3 I wish the keys were written as verbs rather than nouns
-
BAMB! Josh and Tisha are right on the money on this line of thinking. Great job guys! Thanks for sharing https://t.co/N8a7Q3llu2
-
-
That's what I love RE: gamification. Done well,it creates a tighter feedback loop. More feedback = more learning
-
A2) Assess comes from the Latin word, assidere, which means to sit beside. That's what grades should be more like! Personal feedback
-
Or can we simply give the feedback...how does the grade add to the feedback "explanation"?
-
I remember John Wooden talking about a C is a good grade, What measures success https://t.co/McpnPJJcM1 https://t.co/SZErgeCSEB
-
-
A2: If Ss put forth their best effort, take the initiative to ask questions, & still get a C, is that “bad”?
-
A3 - Looking at my own life, I'm at my best when I'm confident, curious, and people can depend on me. .
-
A3: I think I would say resilience, curiosity & effort. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
-
A2 ...1st semester over, and they said you were right, should've trusted you, it was fine but stressful at first with zeros
-
A3 ooo this is tough! I would say resilience if ss can learn to keep digging and growing they can get through just about anything
-
A3: I think all PDL hold value, but I am leading off with Empathy because it closest to the heart.
-
A3: enthusiasm is contagious. With onboarding students can set up the rest of their unit/year. If the T seems bored so will Ss
-
A3 I have the most notes around these 3: Enthusiasm, Initiative, and Empathy but I think all ten work well together.
-
A3 Enthusiasm! If you're not into it, it's hard to do the others.
-
A3. Curiosity-it's what drives us all to explore the world around us and fuels our desire to learn.
-
Hold that thought for Q8...but I'll need help with it. Confidencing and Effortting aren't words :)
-
I could argue for any, but INITIATIVE might have the strongest impact on growth and learning. Complimented by curiosity of course.
-
-
A3: I think Initiative and resilience are at the top of my list. Ss need to have the drive to be independent and to stick to it!
-
A3: Lately, I have really explored the importance of Curiosity. Be a hummingbird, not always a jackhammer: https://t.co/lUMzjxYjJh
-
A3: This is hard…Confidence, enthusiasm, and focus. With these I think you can achieve just about anything… With effort of course. ;)
-
-
A3b: but now I want to steal everyone else's answers... haha
-
A3: Curiosity and enthusiasm. Curious Ss are connected to learning. Have growth mindset...sparks passion. Enthusiasm is contagious.
-
Sometimes being curious allows you to find a route that takes a lot less effort :)
-
a3) the awesomeness in science usually is hard stuff, without resilience, you don't get the cool stuff!
-
-
Thanks for joining in the fun at tonight.
-
Good answer...often a positive attitude is thought of as secondary. I could agree that it may need to be first!
-
Ok, unfamiliar with this reference - just expanded my horizon. I think I get the jist it is what I like
-
A3 I would choose ... all of them
-
yes enthusiasm does go a long ways! Ok I switch to resilience and enthusiasm.
-
That is what makes the list so powerful… They are a complete package that truly points students toward actionable goals.
-
Work smarter not harder...is that your philosophy :)
-
I wish! I probably spend way too much time finding the longest possible way to do something!
-
A3: Focus & enthusiasm! Enthusiasm gets started & sometimes helps u finish. Focus keeps u in the moment so it can be soaked in!
-
A3 hmm, personally for me is Curiosity. I tell my Ss I got smarter by being annoying 2 yr old asking WHY? And never stopped
-
-
me too! I go to type my answer but then find another reason to support a different key point.
-
-
for sure, I need to get some posters or anchor charts made for these as reference while teaching.
-
A2 cont. I just had a epiphany "Grades are nothing more than 0's and 1's" fits nicely with the
-
some of them could be included as part of others, but I know from whence you speak
-
Love this idea… When done could you share them… Maybe we could have a design contest!
-
A3. Effort. Resiliency. Empathy. These are my core 3.
-
I award individual XP when I see Purpose driven learning. Teach it as employability skills in culinary.
-
A4: Incorporating them into our class social contracts, lead by example, and recognize Ss when they are doing the same!
-
a4) I'd love to have an online test that students could repeatedly take until the show mastery. Not sure how to make it
-
Empathy! YES! So important to learn and put into practice daily.
-
You could do something with Google Forms
-
Rolling in super late, but finally cozy under a blanket. Melissa from Nebraska 11-12 ELA Deduct 50 HP if needed for tardiness...
-
. Google Forms! You can use data validation that wouldn't allow them to submit until they got the answer correct!
-
A4. Transparency. Ss know where I come from and why. I include their voices and try to be by their side as a teacher.
-
A4: Award indiv XP for PDL. Teach it as employability skills in culinary.
-
A4 I thought about taking the letter on p. 40 and introducing next year as the "Game we call School"
-
A4: I have incorporated them into my game this year. Skill points. They are all attached to . Learn more: https://t.co/GjrMPmbQSd
-
No penalty for tardiness if your answers are brilliant and make up for it :)
-
I couldn't agree more! My story is shared too. https://t.co/hKR28zlabk
-
-
A4. Transparency. Ss know where I come from and why. I include their voices and try to be by their side as a teacher.
-
A4: My feedback 2 parents to Ss and discussions will be centered around PDL I also will have a leveling up system based on PDL skills
-
A4: Skills seen in class & home, on playground & sports field. Educate parents, coaches, & other adults to recognize & encourage them
-
Quizalize is a fun one that lets Ss repeat.
-
I have had plenty of success with that letter over the years.
-
A4a: I think I would start by modelling them as class goals, and giving examples of what they look like in action.
-
Wow. High expectations! I'll do my best!
-
A4b: Then students could choose others they know they need to work on and reflect on their progress.
-
I do this w/ . Can set limits on not allowing a S to pass until they get a certain grade. Mastery based learning
-
A4 I teach my students how to fail and move on
-
Love having you here. Thanks for joining in the fun.
-
It is a great letter. I've bookmarked it to use parts next year! https://t.co/LvvcLDPsAy
-
-
I have had plenty of success with that letter over the years.
-
Ha Ha keep warm, glad you made it
-
Hi all! Missy / CT joining to chat. We talk about standards based grading at secondary level but unsure how understood by colleges.
-
Words of a strong leader! https://t.co/sYGnm2WjDI
-
-
I hope my Ss would say I model this daily. No leader can lead without ego and empathy.
-
Powerful lesson to learn and teach students.
-
I love that it's self paced, but also you can make personalized feedback to explain missed questions
-
A4 I see the Purpose Driven Learning to go hand in hand with 7 Habits (principles) you need foundation based on people relationships
-
is one of my favorite chats--I hate missing it :)
-
Thanks for joining in book chat. We are discussing Purpose Driven Learning. An idea shared in the book.
-
Let's connect our to ...shall we?! Q5 coming up!
-
Only if I there is a badge or XP points, ...
-
-
A4: If we keep using these words hopefully they will become second nature to Ss & they will internalize them
-
easier in the context of learning to write, but yes, with powerful ramifications
-
A4: explain Ts stance on grades and allow multiple redos until Ss are happy with their mastery. I retest during lunch (optional)
-
A4: I want to use more of the purpose-based lrng language. Also tranforming to standards-based scores and grading less
-
That is what I have seen over the years. Keep at it and you and the students will become better at internalizing them
-
YES! has many a great story about his Ss internalizing these words!
-
A5: Ss take personal responsibility for their learning. Becomes the language and foundation of class
-
-
A5 gamification teaches strategic thinking that uses all of the keys
-
A5: gamers don't die they respawns. Students don't fail they learn
-
A5: I understand it as another layer of support w/i the room. They both build skills & qualities that all need to be successful.
-
Q4 create lessons where students make a change/difference, 1st grd graphs laps for running club,
-
A5 If a foundation based on relationships is established than the gameboard is ready to be shaped and ultimately played.
-
LOVE the imagery! How can we help our Ss "respawn" after a failure? https://t.co/G2B6kbddCz
-
-
A5: gamers don't die they respawns. Students don't fail they learn
-
A5. This is about choice and authenticity. How can I reach all my learners. Can I differentiate my content delivery?
-
Love this… Ss start to understand themselves. Then they understand their classmates, and finally the content. https://t.co/HF30ljv1nz
-
-
A5 If a foundation based on relationships is established than the gameboard is ready to be shaped and ultimately played.
-
A5: The adventure quest has really opened my eyes to the power of gamification. The quests have me hitting all of those areas!
-
A4 tje repetition of certain games helps Ss develop certain skills which can translate into developing other skills
-
Pokemon never die - they just faint & sometimes need to see the nurse to fix the injuries!
-
Great answers for Q5! is a powerful teaching tool! Let's keep moving...Q6 coming up!
-
A5 I think gamification implicitly uses Purpose Driven Learning, but I think i need to be more explicit with the actual words
-
A5: I also feel when engagement is high, purpose driven learning comes naturally, almost second nature
-
-
A5:gamification is an engaging layer on top of what u already do, PDL is the language that you use to support Ss to lifelong learning
-
A5: Learning needs a common language so that Ts, Ss, & parents can be on the same page. offer that language.
-
A6: True learning can't happen without reflection.
-
Who here can lead me to a blog about their personal path on the road towards gamification?
-
Glad you are enjoying it. Look out as I am working on a new project for you guys. Oops, I have already said to much!
-
a6) ties in with resiliancy well. What did I do wrong, how can I fix it
-
A5: A different way of teaching requires a different way of assessing. How do you “grade” the skills developed through gamification?
-
A6: Ss internalize learning when they reflect. Powerful when you build it time for it
-
A6 Reflection is an easily underestimated skill!!
-
Not only should ss have the time to reflect but also us as teachers and the ss need to see how we reflect
-
A6. Dewey's quote nails it. I have had to make time in class to reflect on practice. This is an on going goal. Need to get better
-
A6: Reflection cements learning, forces Ss to higher level of thnkg. It makes Ss consider their own role in learning
-
read the book, a very good place to start. Also .com
-
TIME is key...intentional time given for meaningful reflection. Cannot simply be an afterthought when Ts have "extra" time.
-
-
A6: Reflection completes the powerful cycle of learning. No reflection would be like no Climate in a story.
-
Reflection takes the content and relates it to yourself in a way that is meaningful.
-
A6: Finding at senior levels lots of resistance from Ss toward reflecting :(
-
A6: reflection allows one to process and internalize learning.
-
3 levels. I think Ts should give Ss reflections, Ss should give their peers reflections, & of course Ss should reflect on their own
-
but if we take the time, even if it is an ounce of effort for the Ss - they notice.
-
It's not just reflection to learn it's coupled with goals. What went well? What did not? How can I improve? Ts & Ss for growth
-
-
Agreed. The PDL can be used to teach how to reflect without pity parties :)
-
A6:Reflection is key 2 learning how did I show initiative today, did I give my best effort today was I confident in my teaching today
-
A6: If you can’t comb your hair with out the reflection in the mirror, why would we think you could learn with out reflection.
-
Goals give PURPOSE! Yes...make goals and reflect on learning! https://t.co/kXI4TUocbt
-
-
It's not just reflection to learn it's coupled with goals. What went well? What did not? How can I improve? Ts & Ss for growth
-
Time is flying...Q7 on it's way!
-
I agree. I'm trying to start small. I've found conferences work well, allows me do urge them to dig deeper.
-
-
A6 I've always reflected, but these chats having me do more! Had Ss do goals before: w/o reflection = less meaningful, less impact
-
A6 "We see the world not as it is, but as we are - as we are conditioned to see it."
-
Great analogy. Never thought about it that way. I'm pretty transparent with my reflection with Ss. https://t.co/jnH0ZpqgJf
-
-
A6: If you can’t comb your hair with out the reflection in the mirror, why would we think you could learn with out reflection.
-
My first college degree is Philosophy.
-
Twitter chats are a great way for teachers to take time to reflect. I LOVE my Twitter time!
-
A7: It is crucial to get Ps understand & support a new vision of school.
-
Well if I had a S in classroom with or I would want to play along. Let me play the game TOO!
-
The most enthusiastic Ss are ones who share their badges and exp.s with their families. They buy in to their education with P support
-
A7: If classrm is transparent & Parents can see engagement, they can be huge supporters
-
I'm soooo glad it has contributed to your success
-
-
ooo, see if the student can beat the parent!! there is no way I'd let my dad beat me at school!
-
so who hears the tree fall? j/k
-
A7: maybe can help increase parents' enthusiasim and involvement!
-
A7: Best gift the parents could give is to embrace the journey that my students are on. It’s a program. Need time to build muscles
-
Great Idea!
https://t.co/ylptt50BGe
-
-
ooo, see if the student can beat the parent!! there is no way I'd let my dad beat me at school!
-
A7: parents empower game - based learning by getting involved in the process and continuing the learning at home.
-
I truly believe I use it the most.
-
A7. 1st lesson as Dean was to make Ps partners. Address their fears & support them in the process of parenting. Love not fear based.
-
A7: They have to feel just as apart of the community as the students do!
-
Going to have to throw Q8 for feedback and the Adventure Quest at you at the same time! - Adventure Quest...GO!
-
Love this idea. Maybe I should make some quests that involve them. https://t.co/5rHxXGSOHg
-
-
A7: maybe can help increase parents' enthusiasim and involvement!
-
Listening to A7 we are in essence engaging the parents - giving them an opportunity to connect with their child
-
-
A7: Send out parent emails. I create a promo video at beg of semester so parents can get excited along with kids.
-
-
A7:I want my Ss to be using the language of PDL at home with their families and I will be talking to Ps with the same common language
-
You know how much I love my videos… Great job Tisha! https://t.co/bKpphfn54q
-
-
A7: Send out parent emails. I create a promo video at beg of semester so parents can get excited along with kids.
-
Keep us updated! I'm intrigued!
-
A7. Gamified or not, send a letter home telling the Ps about you & why you do what you do. Can't help our Ss w/out knowing their Ps
-
Can you share an example?
-
A8: learner agency and efficacy are implied but too important not to directly address.
-
As we wrap up, please take time as you use to send feedback! It definitely can grow & adapt!
-
A8 Turn them into verbs so they are actions (which may require two words) :)
-
