Good evening, #EduAR PLN! I am one of the cofounders of the chat, along with my AMAZING EduSistas, @Lindsey_Bohler and @nortnik. We are thrilled to have @DHEPrincipal joining us tonight to discuss trauma informed schools. Please let us know you're here and where you are!
Howdy #eduar ~ just got back from a #Mindfulness Expo so I can't stay long. Here's the bookmark I gave to the families that came to hear my kickoff keynote.

A1 Talking about how you both feel about being trapped in the elevator might be a great start. Talk about the different impact it has on both of you. #eduAR
A1 Talking about how you both feel about being trapped in the elevator might be a great start. Talk about the different impact it has on both of you. #eduAR
A1- Behavior is communication, so we have to address the needs that cause behavior by making kids feel connected, safe and secure.Students first, content second. Don't you agree? #EduAR
A1 To support learning, to help Ss succeed, help them attain their goals, you need to know their story. To know their challenges, their feelings, their obstacles, we need to create personalized supports based on what they need. We need to build them up, to encourage. #eduAR
A1: Trauma informed: It's not just for trauma kids-it's best practice for all. It's not a weak approach, it actually holds students to a higher level of accountability. Our society is changing, education needs to as well or get left behind. #EduAR
A1: The average teenager has the same level of anxiety as a psychiatric patient in the 1950s. Much of it is due to a trauma of some sort. These children cannot take on learning until their emotional needs are met. #eduAR
A1 - “ Great to meet you! Glad you’re part of our school. We have an awesome way to help you and the students get acclimated to school. It will make your experience awesome!”#EduAR
A1: Being trapped in an elevator brings on feelings of helplessness, stress, anxiety, anger... Some kids live life feeling these things all at once because of the ACEs they've experienced. #EduAR
Q1 Well, I may start by talking about how our current students' lives is different from the previous generation in relation to family make-up, ... #eduar
A1 After experiencing a major trauma in my own life, I would share the effect it had on me physically, mentally, emotionally. I was an adult when this trauma occurred. I would hope to leave the elevator with the teacher thinking about how a child is affected. #eduar
A1. I would explain the importance of supporting their students & getting more info abt their situation at home to be able to help them succeed at school, getting to know them help & establish relationships #EduAR
A1: Students who are not having their needs met socially and emotionally are likely not available for learning. By finding the why behind the behavior, building relationships, safety, and trust, we will prepare them socially, emotionally, and then academically. #eduAR
A1: Being #traumainformed begins with empathy, a relentless nature to study each child and their history, and the ability to connect in such a way that you become Kids' safe person, and your school becomes their safe place. #EduAR
A team of teachers from my school just spent 2 days with Jim Sporleder -principal from Lincoln Alt School in the movie Paper Tigers. 2 days of trauma training. #EduAR
A1: Understanding the impact trauma has on a child's ability to take on new information, process and grow is vital to helping them overcome the trauma. #eduAR
A1 We are shaped by the experiences we've had starting at birth & respond to the world around us the way we do as a result. Imagine missing out on having basic (relational) needs at your earliest stage of development. TOTAL shift for your life #eduAR@nami
Woo-hoo! I'm going to hear him at a conference next week!! #eduAR
He's my unofficial mentor. Hopefully, he'll be my official mentor by the end of next week!! He's amazing!
A1: For those who have experienced trauma of some kind, you MUST connect with them to develop trust before any learning can take place. Why would they work for people they don’t trust when they already may have trust issues. #eduAR
A team of teachers from my school just spent 2 days with Jim Sporleder -principal from Lincoln Alt School in the movie Paper Tigers. 2 days of trauma training. #EduAR
A2 IMHO, grit is more for pushing through academic learning. Resilience is for pushing through the stuff that impacts things other than academics. #eduAR
A1 I would encourage the teacher to study the research on the difference in brain development of a child living in trauma versus a child who is not. I think is would be also to identify what life events are traumatic. Anyone who loves children needs to be informed. #eduar
A2 Grit is working to attain a goal no matter the obstacles. Resilience is remaining steadfast when those obstacles be socially or emotionally devastating #eduAR
A2 Grit and resilience go hand in hand. We need to have the feeling of resilience-knowing that we will keep going no matter what, that we should not give up. Grit is the actual effort that we put in to make sure we do not give up; it is the hard work that makes it happen. #eduAR
A2: Grit and resilience are so similar to me. #Resilience is the internal “I’m not quitting,” and #grit is the action of getting after it. Hmmmm they both sound the same. Can’t wait to see other responses! :) #eduAR
A2: It takes time and a lot of hard work, personally, to introspectively repair harm that’s been caused by traumatic events - that takes grit. The end game is a more resilient and empathetic person. #EduAR
A2: Grit is what we need when we know things are off kilter, and we bend out of shape. Resilience is how we mold ourselves back to who we are, only better because of the adversity that bent us. #EduAR
A2: Resilience is the ability to bounce forward into the new normal, to rekindle the embers so that the flame will reignite and burn brightly again! #eduAR
#EduAR Grit and relisience are connectd. Grit helps the person persevere, be resilient towards adversity, negative situations. They are both personal traits in a person. Coud they be develop? Yes. Absolutely.
A2. Grit deals more with long term goals and not short term gratification. While resilience deals more with an emotional state and persevering through difficulties, which is a quality of grit. #EduAR
I entered it on our professional development web page. It was denied...Apparently, it's by invitation. Not sure who gives out that invitation.... frustrating! #EduAR
A3 There is definitely a difference. Self-control is limiting your own actions/suppressing your intuition and honest reaction. Self-regulation is learning to adjust, to evaluate, to know how to react in certain situations. It is about growing and knowing yourself more. #eduAR
A2: Speaking personally, when my daughter was fighting cancer, it took grit to keep supporting her and my wife. It took grit to keep devoting myself to my kids and my school. Hopefully that experience helped me to become a more resilient person. #EduAR
A3: Self-control is when you are already in control of yourself. Self-regulation is when you get out of regulations and have the tools to get yourself back into regulation. #EduAR
Oh for sure! Knowing their history is important though...where they have lived, how many schools they have attended, family dynamics, academic progress, etc. helps us see a better picture of the child. #EduAR
A3 Self-control is making a conscious effort to stay under control (body/mind); self-regulation is using strategies (mental/physical) to stay under control. Great question!#eduAR
A2 resilience occurs as you begin to heal. It is a reminder that i am better because i had this terrible experience. Resilience says I can help others who have experienced the same traumatic event. Grit is the determination that i won’t be a victim. I will be victorious #eduar
A3: Self-regulation is the ability to manage and regulate our emotions, to proactively manage stress and hurt so that we come out of it on the other side stronger than before. It's a little more than just staying in control. #eduAR
A3: To me, self control is your mind controlling your actions/reactions. Self regulation is the emotional side of checking your actions and reactions. Definitely great thought provoking questions!! #EduAR
A3 Self-control is making a conscious effort to stay under control (body/mind); self-regulation is using strategies (mental/physical) to stay under control. Great question!#eduAR
A3 Self control is your ability to make a conscience effort to control your actions. Self regulation is reflecting on your ability to have self control, making a plan to do better, and adjusting the plan when needed. #eduar
Q3 "... a profound difference btw self-regulation & self-control. Self-control is about inhibiting strong impulses; self-regulation, reducing the frequency and intensity of strong impulses by managing stress-load and recovery. Self-regulation makes self-control possible. #eduar
A3: Self-regulation is the ability to manage and regulate our emotions, to proactively manage stress and hurt so that we come out of it on the other side stronger than before. It's a little more than just staying in control. #eduAR
A2 Self regulation plays a big role in the realm of self control. If one is unable to regulate emotions & stay even tempered, impulse control gets thrown out of balance. Emotional response drives choices. #eduAR
That's too bad. We are forming a trauma team at our school, and since @RWildcatCheer and I had taken a class the summer before, we got put on the team and asked to go. I am glad our new supt thinks it's necessary. #EduAR
A3: Self-regulation is what is going on inside, choosing to regulate emotions based on a situation. Self-control is what appears on the outside, even though on the inside emotions are all over. Self-regulation can lead to calm. Self-control may or may not lead to calm. #EduAR
Control is something we make choices in and regulation is something that we can't control but rather can control the way and knowledge of becoming regulated. #eduAR
I think of self-control as following the rules and staying in control, perhaps suppressing our emotions instead of expressing them?? I got kind of stuck on this tough question actually. #eduar
Self control is the ability to stop yourself from becoming dysregulated. Perhaps self regulation is the ability to bring yourself back to control after you become dysregulated. #eduAR
A4: I really love all things @ConsciousD. The main focus is feeling safe. When our emotions are brewing inside of us, we don't feel safe emotionally and/or physically. The goal is to provide a feeling of 'safe' through relationships and background knowledge of children. #EduAR
I really think mindfulness does help, to start to know how you are feeling. There is a great significance to keeping expectations clear and high and using consequences once the individual is regulated. #eduAR
A4: I put a break bench in my room this year with calm down tools. I have also worked on my tone of voice and sentence structure/responses with my students this year. #EduAR
A4: The Peace Corner!! It's non-punitive so Ss aren't belittled by needing a little time to self-regulate. Our Building Leadership Team brought this back to us from @DHEPrincipal building! I've seen a huge change since implementing this! #EduAR
Totally agree! I may appear to have self-control but actually be screaming inside. Self-regulation is what happens when I learn to recover or prevent the screaming inside my body. I’ve found mindfulness personally to be extremely helpful during self-regulation. #eduar
A3: Self-regulation is what is going on inside, choosing to regulate emotions based on a situation. Self-control is what appears on the outside, even though on the inside emotions are all over. Self-regulation can lead to calm. Self-control may or may not lead to calm. #EduAR
A1: I recently attended part of the Empowered to Connect training, which focuses on TBRI (Trust Based Relational Intervention). It is incredible, and I can't wait to learn more. #EduAR
A4 My go-to strategy is building relationships. I have meals with my students, talk with them, listen to them. Their passions, their knowledge guides the learning in class. When students can learn & collaborate in a safe environment where they are cared for, it matters. #eduAR
Some of my colleagues and myself are doing an independent book study this summer with the book Conscious Discipline based off of your tweets. Thanks for the advice. #EduAR
Validationof feelings is huge. We tell Ss it’s ok to be upset/mad about a situation at school. But they don’t ha e to stay there (mad). Try and give Ss specific strategies to cope with feelings and impulses. #eduAR
A4: Our students really like this Peace Room filled with sensory and mindfulness resources. We sit on the floor together and talk or we sit in silence w/soft lighting and relaxing music options. Such a calming place to emote and regroup. #eduAR
A4. At SchoolToolsTv we talk a lot about trauma (for instance during red ribbon week) and what tools kids can use to deal with them. It has been successful #eduar
That is awesome! I have not been through the full training, so my learning has come from my amazing prek teachers who embed it into their daily interactions with kids. #EduAR

A4 I love what Zones of Regulation teaching can do for young students to increase awareness. Building relationships and being able to talk with kids through those zones has resulted in wins #eduAR
Q4 I am in check with my own socio-emotional needs first because this relates to how I relate to Ss and adults. I try to be in remove implicit/cultural bias. I am deeply interested in the Ss well-being. #eduar
A4: Hmmm...it is really tough to pick just one. I think building relationships is extremely important. Ever since we started putting the focus on that, I have seen a drastic positive change in my students. #eduAR
A4: Sand timers are calming and also give kids a safe time to recover from their emotions, to think, decompress, and reset. I keep a stash with various time amounts! #EduAR
A4: I greet students at the door and then check in with them at our morning meeting before we begin "our day." I remind them that we as a class decide what our classroom community is like. And guess what? These kids pull for each other. #eduAR
There are weeks where I think that is one of the most common phrases I use in my day. It's amazing how powerfully effective it is! Especially when you are a "change of face" #eduAR
A4: Calm down tools I use-a stuffed animal, a weighted shoulder wrap, several lava lamp sort of things, stress balls, a pinwheel to blow on, a rubik's cube, texture balls, a marble fidget thing... #EduAR
A4 Mindfulness- name the facts ... i am alive even though i feel like i’m dying, i am safe right now even though i feel scared. I have _____ who loves me, even though i feel completely alone #eduar
A4 We are finally able to house a sensory rollerblading next year. SO excited to provide a place specifically for Ss who need a quiet place to calm and regulate. #eduAR
Same! And, as the lead learner (principal), I do not want kids to fear me, or see me as "the punisher". I want to be an additional safe person for them when they need a break from their peers and/or teacher. Sometimes the teacher needs a break too. This is necessary. #EduAR

A5 Responsive - every move has to be level, calculated and anticipatory. Your first move may not be the right one (& you'll know quickly), but its always responsive to need #eduAR
A1: I recently attended part of the Empowered to Connect training, which focuses on TBRI (Trust Based Relational Intervention). It is incredible, and I can't wait to learn more. #EduAR
Q5: Responsive teachers! #maytheirtribeincrease A response is prepared and knows its goal. A reaction hopes for the best and happens on the spot. #EduAR
Reacting is emotion driven, Responding is logic driven. As teachers, we need to have both approaches available. Figuring out which is best for a given situation is the tough part. #EduAR
A5: When you are proactive in your responses, you are more likely to make well thought out decisions that benefit your students and help you stay calm throughout the situation. Reactive situations often build emotional responses that we regret later. #eduAR
A5: When we react, we are usually in our emotional state. When we respond, we are in our executive state. We can't be their calm if we join in on their emotional chaos. The adult must be responsive. (I fail at this sometimes) #EduAR
Couldn't agree with that mindset more! It does create create challenges when sometimes adults want to see you as "punisher" (which is frustrating as a leader) #eduAR
A5 Responding is having a plan in place of an event. Reacting is the action taken, sometimes well thought out, sometimes not. I would rather be someone who responds to situations. #eduAR
A5. The fact we're here discussing this topic means we all believe being responsive is the right way. It's about the Ss, not us. That's why unconditional positive regard is the best approach #eduar
A5: Responsive is better, reactive is easier. I am working very hard to change from reactive to responsive. I need to look at the "why" and not so much the "what". #EduAR
A5: I feel like when I respond to something, there's more thought and energy put into the conversation.
When I react, it's more off the cuff (Like if I see a spider. I react. I don't respond.) #EduAR
A5. Definetely responsive. Working on getting to know the students, trying to identify triggers to prevent behaviors, teaching the students strategies, constantly visiting classrooms to provide help w the students who need a break to prevent dysregulation #eduAR
Yes. Sometimes it is families who place the fear of the principal in children. Sometimes it can be the staff of a school. Kids need help when they become dysregulated. I am an additional helper. #EduAR
Couldn't agree with that mindset more! It does create create challenges when sometimes adults want to see you as "punisher" (which is frustrating as a leader) #eduAR
Q5 Responsive is different from Reactive. We want to be responsive to students' needs and interests because we actively seek ways to support Ss in all areas. Reactive is negative. #eduar
A5. Definetely responsive. Working on getting to know the students, trying to identify triggers to prevent behaviors, teaching the students strategies, constantly visiting classrooms to provide help w the students who need a break to prevent dysregulation #eduAR
A5 We need to be more responsive and not react. Being responsive means we listen, understand, empathize and work together. If we react we often use judgment or emotions. We don't think through our words. We need to lead with our hearts. #eduAR
A6: Oh my goodness...I am so thankful for my #CEtribe@CentralCabotpK4. We have support staff who serve as helpers for classroom teachers, an additional mentor for some kids, and we have in depth kid talks monthly to problem solve as a team/grade level. They are OUR kids. #EduAR
A6 As a school culture, we need to make sure that every child is seen & heard. The school schedule must be re-imagined to make relationships possible. Reinvent the box that doesn't put kids first. We will always fight for what is best for kids; eliminate barriers/obstacles #eduAR
A5 I’m more of a responsive type teacher! My Ss have commented on my lack of reaction to negative situations! Patience helps create a safe environment. #eduAR
A6 We have Ts strategically in place every AM greeting Ss. Goal is for a S to be greeted 2-4 times before they go to our gym for AM announcements. It’s the time we also can gauge Ss emotional state of mind. We may need to #respond I’d they appear disturbed. #eduAR
A6 Common message: Every adult must have the capacity to be caring & compassionate. With our #PBIS, CICO allows any staff, regardless of title, be that champion or cheerleader for a child. #eduAR
A6: 1-6 Have "Graber Houses" a couple of times a month. This is a multi-age group of Ss with another adult. They are reading/discussing "Wonder," and then do some type of team-building activity. I know that kids cheer when it's announced that they have "Houses." #EduAR
Q6:Trauma informed PD...SEL PD...giving students a chance to visit with counselor rather than the principal when they "act out"... Administrators who intentionally seek to build relationships with Ss. #EduAR
A6: Each morning I stand in the same place, along with my AP. We have the perfect spot where we can see all kids who enter the building. I call them by name, high five, hug, fist bump, and check the emotional temp of kids every morning! #EduAR
A6: Our school is quite small, and all in one building PK-12. As teachers, we know all the students at all levels. We are visible in hallways, and we do a lot of group things like assemblies, ex. Christmas singing in pajamas and Christmas movie day-staff included. #EduAR
#EduAR I"m glad you asked this. We should start with all adults in the building . Helping all become aware about how our own SEL needs define who we are, how this is related to instruction & our ways we communicate & respond to Ss.
A6: We work to develop and foster relationships so that children have someone in our building to go to, talk to, get a hug from or just sit near. #eduAR
A6 Ss who may feel disconnected are given a task as a contribution to the school. Could be rdg to younger S; helping special needs S; helping Secretary shred papers; whatever! #eduAR
A6: we have “one lunch,” the whole school takes a 50 minute lunch at the same time and Ss are free (with some limits) to move about and visit/eat with teachers/friends #EduAR
A6: We have an awesome administrator who instilled the importance of building relationships with all our Ss. We take the time to get to know our kids. We have fun with them and sit down and talk with them. We also give handshakes, high fives, and hugs. #eduAR
A6: Each morning I stand in the same place, along with my AP. We have the perfect spot where we can see all kids who enter the building. I call them by name, high five, hug, fist bump, and check the emotional temp of kids every morning! #EduAR
Tonight was AWESOME. I'll be adding #EduAR to my hashtag favorites. Grow your PLN tonight and follow 10 new folks. It was a privilege to moderate. I wish everyone the best on their #traumainformed journey!
A6: one of my @CentralCabotpK4 kids described our school...she cane a couple of months ago and already calls us family and friends. Priceless. We are their family. That’s a strategy. There is power in connection and LOVE. #eduAR#CEunited
A6 Our principal often reminds us that every day should be a fresh start with every student. Greet students every morning with a caring, sincere smile. Make sure they know you're sincerely happy they are there! #eduAR
James, thank you so much for this wonderful conversation. I think @nortnik@Lindsey_Bohler and myself may do a trauma informed series sometime this summer, and we will be asking you to return as our guest! Right girls? #EduAR
Tonight was AWESOME. I'll be adding #EduAR to my hashtag favorites. Grow your PLN tonight and follow 10 new folks. It was a privilege to moderate. I wish everyone the best on their #traumainformed journey!
A6 I volunteer for morning breakfast duty. I do the duty everyday so i can greet every student that eats breakfast. I believe the consistency of seeing the same adult every morning brings security. I try to speak to every student by offering hugs and listening to stories. #eduar

#EduARYou're the best,@DHEPrincipal ! I'll see you in KC next week!!
On that note, wonderful ones, we had Laps for Learning yesterday (X 2 classes), a field trip to see a live performance this morning, and a sensory walk this afternoon at the nature center.I'm bushed! Good night!
