a1 always allow for revisions, stress what we're doing and how we're doing it more than grades.
A1: setting goals w Ss and using scores to help THEM track progress...hoping for ownership!
Sorry. Switching accts. Don't want it in my class feed
A1. I always emphasize that I give assessments to know where my students are and to track their growth. Grades aren't important.
A1: Making assessments not feel like assessments is important for creating positive learning culture
Deb in De Soto. I'm on my way home from hunting Pokémon & then will be multi-tasking during the debate. No, I'm not the driver.
A1: I try to vary the type of assessments I use, project, test, performance, written, etc... This give Ss various areas to succeed
A1: reminding Ss assessments aren't final, can be a work in progress and showing gaps in knowledge instead of "oh well I failed"
A1: I am trying my best this year to make assessments more of a celebration learning rather than a stressful event.
A1: I use info from assessments to determine what work needs to be done. I expect students to make corrections so that they learn
started calling them celebrations of learning which we got from our last grade level PD and
same! Some ss still want the "easy" static tests only... takes time to change culture of learning.
Megan Nagel 6th grade ELA and science Newton
A1: Changing the mindset that assessments are somehow final or that students can't learn from them.
I tell my Ss I use them to help me help them. If it's a summarize, in the grade book assessment Ss get to be retaught & resubmit.
A1: small assessments along the way help me to direct our learning
A1: Build in Ss choice & voice. Use assessment as a starting point to discuss future goals & growth. Applies to all grade levels.
I'm late! Adrienne from Dodge City! I teach 4th grade.
A1) Use them to see where kids are, but also to celebrate where they have come. Celebrate accomplishments made
A1: Assessments should be used to determine what Ss need and how to help them be successful/ continue to grow as a learner.
I've also been known to call them opportunities to shine. https://t.co/K9RWkOUSAa
started calling them celebrations of learning which we got from our last grade level PD and
I say this all the time! "I don't care about your grades - I care about what you are learning." https://t.co/4eqqIv6DKU
A1. I always emphasize that I give assessments to know where my students are and to track their growth. Grades aren't important.
Ss come to me just wanting to answer a simple question. It takes training to understand there than b more than 1 right answer
A1. We don't take tests anymore, we have celebrations of learning! We focus on what we learned and there are party hats involved.😁
And help teachers to learn about their instructional practices - what works, what could work better. https://t.co/RieODXXRqp
A1: Assessments should be used to determine what Ss need and how to help them be successful/ continue to grow as a learner.
A1: I'm a first yr T, so my opinion might be off, but I feel like I have to do them more for the parents than anyone else.
Definitely. They soon find out they have to answer a question and support it with information learned in class
Sky from Phillipsburg SPED K-2 joining late & in and out tonight
nice! I need to start doing the same!
Great perspective on assessments https://t.co/TurjeTqlzh
A1. We don't take tests anymore, we have celebrations of learning! We focus on what we learned and there are party hats involved.😁
What do you view as assessments? There are more than the formal ones we have to give.
A1: I tell my kids they are just a chance to show what they know, then I know what we need to work on!
A simple "why" or "how do you know this" is great insight to Ss thinking. & easy training wheels for future tougher ?s
Love the support for your students! https://t.co/NnNZ4j9wEh
A1. We don't take tests anymore, we have celebrations of learning! We focus on what we learned and there are party hats involved.😁
My ss hate when I ask those questions. They're so conditioned to the regurgitation model. And so I ask them a lot!
Colby, 4th grade teacher from DeSoto. Joining late.
I'm late! Sorry! Jenny from Augusta, K-5 Rdg Specialist. I participated in a great book study today.
A1 Assessments are not just for the teacher, they allow the students to check their progress as well,
a2 Make something! Surprise me, but make something!
A1: focus on growth mindset, continuously learning and assessment is an opportunity to show what you know
A2: I LOVE when you can add in student voice and student choice into assessments!
A2: Any type of presentation that allows s's to shine in a way that they are comfortable with and enjoy using!
A1: if my Ss don't do well on an assessment, time to reteach using different methods
A2: IDK if it's my fav way but I just used GoFormative for the 1st time...love seeing real time assessment work
A2: I am a true believer in the power of 1:1 conferencing with students.
A2) Assessing through kinesthetic games, technology projects, student discussions
A2. I hate grading. 😖 (I know I'm not alone). So my favorite assessment is informal, observing, talking, listening, etc.
A2 a formative assessment that allows Ss the choice to demonstrate their learning in a way they are passionate about = strong asst
A2: I love taking content & having Ss create something with it. A debate b/w Hamilton & Jefferson or infographics or tech project
Q2. Anyway you can make an assessment not seem like just another test. Differentiate assessments as well
A1: We use assessments to celebrate growth & see where we need to go next to help us grow the most.
A2-Anytime I can do a one-on-one w/conversation as a part of it & I can give immediate feedback.
A2: Allowing students choice & having a variety of ways for students to demonstrate learning is favored.
A2: having conversations one on one is my favorite but time consuming and not practical
A2. I love giving my Ss choice over how the show their learning.
Q2. Assessments are about collecting data, why not have Ss track their own data to show them growth.
A2) I let Ss become the T, I can tell a lot of what they know as they teach or model what they know, esp. by vocab they use.
A2: My favorite is authentic, real world kinds of assessments - like presenting bids for a podcast studio to the schoolboard
love this idea. The challenge seems to be all the front-loading a T needs to do.
A2: projects! Fits so well with my content. Gives students flexibility/creativity. Usually more challenging than multiple choice
A2b-Last year I began letting Ss show me in Ss what they've achieved by choosing how to present it.
Assessments should be engaging and allow students to showcase knowledge not regurgitate it.
a2 Im excited to show off my ss work to local community, using QR codes at parish donut sunday.
My 8 Ss put in "opportunity for S choice of test or project" in their class rules this yr. It'll happen a few times!
A2: I love learning logs. Able to see what Ss are thinking. Like to have options in format-writing, speaking, drawing, projects...
A2: today had Ss teach me how to divide, great way to see if they understood the process
What a great way to support your students and engage with your community! https://t.co/aP3gyUzyfB
a2 Im excited to show off my ss work to local community, using QR codes at parish donut sunday.
Thanks! I'm not sure my ss understand that their assessment is going live next month. Hoping it ups quality.
Love having them teach me how they do something or make a video with explanation!
We love our new goal setting notebooks! We are getting them ready to for Student Led Conferences! https://t.co/tAiuWbMwGF
Q2. Assessments are about collecting data, why not have Ss track their own data to show them growth.
a3 ss: revise, share out
T: analyze unit, make notes for next year, follow up if deficiencies
A2: Observation and asking students clarifying questions. So much can be gained by letting students explain their own thinking.
Any other first grade teachers have creative ways of assessing??
A3. Ss should be open to suggestions or ready to discuss their work. Ts should be prepared to give constructive feedback
A3: a debriefing of what worked and what didn't then a conversation about what direction needs to be taken with goals in mind
A3: Reflection. Goal setting. Instructional changes. Did I say reflection?
A3: Hopefully ts would reflect after assessments & make adjustments if needed & sts would also reflect & set goals for growth.
A3: Reflection - I need to reflect, look for common misconceptions, etc. Students need to reflect on their progress towards goal
A2: another favorite is taking reality shows & using the idea for class. Like Cutthroat Kitchen/History https://t.co/EB3O7WJk1b
AWESOME summary of what we all need to do! https://t.co/i1xgZaNJ1V
a3 ss: revise, share out
T: analyze unit, make notes for next year, follow up if deficiencies
A3-I've worked harder to conference w/Ss when I hand back assessment results.Ss need to help formulate&accept plan to move forward.
I assess with creation using spark or This adds deeper level thinking.
8 Sci does Shark Tank for cyborg eye --- with biology proffs from college across street
A3. Ss and Ts should make plans for how to get even better. And celebrate what was learned, even if it's just a little thing! 🎉
A3: student reflection and discussion; teacher discussion w S re: areas of growth and where more work is needed
A3: Both Ts and Ss should reflect. What is going well? What can be improved? What is the challenge? What do I try next?
A3: Ss should be motivated to continue to grow as a learner Ts should be seeking ways to engage/extend learners
A3: Reflection is key for both. Find strengths and trouble spots to address in the future on both sides.
Looking for common misconceptions is so important! https://t.co/IMIyC1G2Hr
A3: Reflection - I need to reflect, look for common misconceptions, etc. Students need to reflect on their progress towards goal
. I have a couple ornery ss who need some love. Not always easy! https://t.co/dWHk01pZuI
If you don't love them, it will be even harder to lead them.
A3: Student should see correct answers, compare, reflect, discuss, revise. TSGA should give space for that & reteach if necessary
First attempt? And they worked hard? ! Save this to show them at the end of the year to show their growth!
A3: reflection on both parts...the learning continues!
Loving these for Q3. Reflection is key! We no longer give assessments and then keep going with the curriculum without reflection!
A3: Student should see correct answers, compare, reflect, discuss, revise. Ts should give space for that & reteach if necessary
A3: as area her I plan after assessment. Need to bring in the reflection piece for my students
A3: This is one I need to do better. After assessing I should go back over material and discuss w/ Ss, but many times we move on
As a teacher... Wow please don't assess my typing! https://t.co/pZQhrtOYxV
A3: as area her I plan after assessment. Need to bring in the reflection piece for my students
A3: One thing I learned today was reflections need to include an actionable set: What is one thing you can change this week?
a4 public showcase to parish (teach at Catholic school), setting up webpage using for broader reach...
A4: share outs, posting work, sharing w other Ts; I need to get better at this!
Q4: I loved idea of Ss creating an interactive museum exhibit to showcase their understanding of a topic!
A4. We share pictures when doing hands on things, post things on , and put things on our classroom Twitter.
A4-Hallway sharing, pics in newsletter, video presentations, KidBlog
A2 is gr8 alt assessment. I use as backup data 4 Ss who don't test well & sometimes replace a S test score & it's FUN
A4: Ss create: build, design, write song lyrics, make a newscast, produce a documentary-hands on real life learning
A4: Anytime I share their work online or at workshops I ask their permission. They LOVE it when they know it's going beyond school
A4: Ss showcase learning via seesaw, art work we put up in the hallways, seesaw blog
A4: We try and give one different activity with every unit we teach then share it on Social Media.
A4) Always have authentic audience. Could be putting on blog, showcasing for community or experts, showcase night for parents
A4: We have a "Red Carpet" event. Ss dress up, walk red carpet, and showcase their documentary. Hand out Oscars- hot dog awards.
A4: Attempting to do more with authentic audiences for my Ss. Give them real validity in their work. 8th final is all authentic
A4: This is hard. My Ss struggle with rdg & show learning through rdg fluently/applying skills. Need to be more creative here.
I am totally borrowing this idea! https://t.co/8BrdIrwrwK
A4: We have a "Red Carpet" event. Ss dress up, walk red carpet, and showcase their documentary. Hand out Oscars- hot dog awards.
A4. This is something I want to improve on so I'm looking for ideas and suggestions!
A4: try to give authentic audiences - invite others to our classroom, share in blogs, hall displays...
A4: I always default to the ways I like to show work- have to get better at stepping back and letting them go!
I love using a podcasting app to put together samples of their oral reading. https://t.co/cD64AkHvBw
A4: This is hard. My Ss struggle with rdg & show learning through rdg fluently/applying skills. Need to be more creative here.
A4: Would love to do a spin on The Dundees, from The Office, but w/ 130 students, that's a lot of awards... 😄
Found if Ss know a purpose for their work and that it will be looked at by others outside of classroom, they put in more effort
A4: choose the best projects and share on YouTube or school FB. also send out playlists of videos to other kids
A4: Allowing sts to share their learning with authentic audiences and in ways that are meaningful to them.
first time a s screencasted: "MY VOICE IS ANNOYING!" :-D yes, it is, but I will lie and say its not.
A5: Performance assessments show what Ss really know vs did they just guess correctly from MC list
A4: Ss made an IMovie of idioms, they were so proud of their work-& I ❤️ their enthusiasm
That is evidenced daily in Mrs. Nagel's classroom and she shares with colleagues and peers! https://t.co/NDSP4ocUXB
A4: Ss create: build, design, write song lyrics, make a newscast, produce a documentary-hands on real life learning
A5: there are approp times for MC or T/F questions; perf assess can also allow Ss to show more than one concept
A4: My Ss love to show what they know or are learning via seesaw with their Ps.
A5: Some Ss love them, but I think it's important for lots of practice for the Ss that aren't comfortable. Help build confidence
Thats awesome! I didn't know could all that!
A4 is phenomenal at using to showcase work by Ss and the great things the Ts are doing in the cr as well
A5-This can weave together skills and really apply what was learned.
A1: tiered assessments (1-A, 2-B, 3-C) that have Ss choosing a level they are prepared for and retakes to promote
A5 I just find that with PA my Ss are 1000% engaged in what they are doing and they take ownership for their learning.
I love to end group/ind projects with students narrating their learning to me via seesaw
I love the idea of a "soft deadline" to allow for practice and feedback before the final "hard deadline"
A5: Performance tasks show the application of student learning in a way that a MC/TF assessment cannot.
Q5: Perform assessments have the ability for sts to demonstrate learning 4 a variety of curricula if designed 4 that purpose.
A2: ungraded, free response questions (draw, write, chart, etc), that allow Ss to see everything they know - and T to glance too
A5: love them! Use primarily. Works very well w/ teaching and bc we can learn new apps & at the same time
A3: feedback and reflection - both T and S
A5: Performance assessments are my primary means of collecting data in rdg intervention.
A2: Projects, Seesaw, Edmodo!
I love quizzez, kahoot and seesaw
A6: I am really LOVING App Smashing with for assessments! We used to talk about a character in our book!
a6 Orange Slice is a Google Docs Add on to make rubrics. really powerful little addon!
A6: GoFormative, Socrative,
Q6: If still in classroom: st created movies demonstrating their learning on global topics, followed by Academy Awards.
A6: Also is a wonderful assessment tool! You can really learn so much about your kids through blogging!
Yeah! I love the new quiz option for Forms!
A6: WeVideo for making videos. Eyejot- Ss demonstrate/reflect-then send knowledge to parents (great connection to the home)
A6: ❤️ kahoot and seesaw!
Agree. Blogging allows for Ss to demonstrate their learning in a diff format
sorry I was late to the chat, watching the crazy debates with my kiddos for their classes -- yuck!!!
A6: is wonderful for math as well! Easy to use!
A6: because it creates picture based presentations you can voice over, add text and music too!
A6: Love to use tech to showcase learning. My faves... iMovie trailers! Fun stuff!
A6: I'm drawing a blank on this one. Can't wait to see what ideas I can get from everyone!
How is the hour almost up!! Thanks for all the ideas and HUGE thanks to for rocking this topic!
Classroom is a great tool. I'm a huge fan of it. Would be glad to share ideas & learn together.
