Q1 How are successes celebrated in your learning environment? Brag time! Go!
Did I just tweet in a chat?
Is that like a red flare signal?
Using ... yes. :) Welcome!
it is like the bat signal but with a taco
A1 By recognizing that few things are achieved individually. Thankful for all the talent/skills that surround & support!
and that surprises me, that's why I have been asking individuals about it!
Hello everyone Kharima, Instructional Technology Specialist in Houston, Texas
A1) Well with the introduction of Twitter! Lot's of pictures are taken!!
A1 I'm a preservice teacher, but in my future classroom, positive reinforcement and a focus on growth mindset will be key!
Or cheese in a mousetrap :-)
A1: We have 5-10 minutes titled "Successes" at each staff meeting.
Ahh..I think I got it now. My name is Milton, I'm a SDSU student clearing my credential
A1. Highlighting the awesome work I see through writing thank you for being awsome cards
I want students to do a little work for information. If not, we are headed to the world of Wall-e
A1: I like to share on our class Facebook page, tweet it out, include in weekly newsletter, email to parents…share w/ the world!
A1 I'm the biggest cheerleader when I see good stuff happening I tweet about it, post on fb, tell 1:1, & ask them to share!
Excellent idea and great quality of time to honor that.
A1 I talk w/Ss, get input, share their work, go to showcases and at metgs we share Ts work
Do you all have classroom FB pages?
In my own life, my professors have used positive words of affirmation when I have had success.
Letting students recognize other's successes in community circle time
Hello all! I'm an aspiring high school math teacher wanting to learn more about teaching in the 21st Century
Multiple modes for different people. Nice!
Thanks! It's a way to acknowledge our hard work.
Nothing beats a handwritten note. For sure.
Hey everyone, I'm Mario from East LA. Teach 6th grade ELA and innovation coordinator
I feel like I’m pretty good at celebrating in my own classroom, but would like to see Ts celebrated more school wide.
A1: share it on social media - the Ss look for tweets & posts of their successes
A1: For winners of games Dum-dum suckers. But I have been using gold stars with juniors and the love those.
A1 I think successes should be celebrated by compliments and setting goals that can be recognized to show growth and possibility
how awesome that you already see Twitter as a valuable learning tool! Kudos to you!
A1) my students always like to celebrate their work with an incentive (a little extra recess, brain breaks, etc)...
sometimes I worry about tech doing too much for students.
We have school & district FB & Twitter accounts.
Nothing beats a disco ball and the song "Celebration" either!
Hi ! Julie here from an consulting co HQ'ed in Brandon, Florida
I think it's so impt to take Ss into account. That's why I'm doing the challenge on Tues.
Any & everything. A lot of appreciations for classified staff lately.
A1 also post a tweet on our class hashtag
It is kind of crazy how candy and stars still work even for Jrs and Srs in HS.
Hi Julie! I'm from your area! Hee hee
We throw monthly S.W.A.G.(Students Who Achieve Goals) Parties in my class. Every student has a personalized monthly goal.
A1 There's a lot of worth in pulling a student aside and recognizing them face-to-face and personally
A1) oh yeah, our activities get Tweeted out with our district-wide hashtag!!
A1 My st in Health get to go to fitness room. In we recognize successes at the end of class.
A1 They are shared with our team and PLN on Twitter. Shout outs over the announcements as well.
I think goal setting is very important.
A1 and exceptional statements in class get a "SAY THAT AGAIN LOUD AND PROUD"
I find that secondary students usually prefer this method.
Q2 What do you do to brighten a child's day? What about a colleague's day? These are the moments that make a difference.
Tina from TN, little late to the party
It is. Particularly if the Ss set the goal. Seeing growth is brilliant.
Q2 I actually listen. Simple and effective. :)
Per John Hattie's research, goal setting and monitoring is highly effective!
I give hugs to brighten my kids' day. I also might pull them into the hall to talk about what's wrong.
Participating in . S/O to my fellow Elon students, join if you can!
Hey Tina! We are just glad you made it!
A2 Simple smile first. Handwritten note or positive comment about them specifically, too. Remember we are human first. :)
seems to stand the test of time!
Joël McLean, pedagogical leader and principal in Callander, Ontario Canada
I totally agree! I think sometimes we spread the word and forget to acknowledge the kiddo or person.
A2 Sometimes all it takes is a smile and some kind words! Even just being present and engaging helps!
Trying 2x10. Reaching out 2 minutes a day for 10 days to an at risk S. Discuss any topic but school. Builds relationships
A2: writing personalized notes and leaving them on your coworkers' desks. Also, bringing them their favorite candy!
A2. I listen to the students and get to know them as people not just learners.
What a great idea! https://t.co/ES9rd2IYUY
We throw monthly S.W.A.G.(Students Who Achieve Goals) Parties in my class. Every student has a personalized monthly goal.
A1: celebrate by bragging when Ts embrace or try new methods in the classroom use SM & newsletters & verbally brag to admin
A1 I'm learning how to do this chat room thing. Do your kids do shout outs over twitter?
Handwritten notes are so rare these days - I find they are much appreciated.
A2:Quick Check-ins go a long way. I conference with students weekly. I talk about their home life, school life, and reading life
Read the bucket filler book. Leave "drops" for staff in their mailboxes
Hugs and smiles are my favorite!
A2: Ss- give an Awesome Osprey to recognize responsibility & kindness. Adult- note in box, email and/or verbal acknowledgment.
I animatedly say good morning w/ smile in hall to Ss. With Ts I ask how things are going-relationships! https://t.co/AeJexwNFrI
Q2 What do you do to brighten a child's day? What about a colleague's day? These are the moments that make a difference.
how much home life do you delve into?
A2 look at them. Let the child/person know you are focused on them individually and r sincere. https://t.co/GTz5tL7EKx
Q2 What do you do to brighten a child's day? What about a colleague's day? These are the moments that make a difference.
Just talkd to admin on Fri abt doing this, can't wait to hear everyone's stories!
A2: Recognize the hard work. Tell them they rock! High five or a hug!
Understood, several very active including
Absolutely. Makes me wonder how many times educators are the first ones to "see" and "hear" them that day.
A2: I always smile & greet each teacher & speak to Ss,try to compliment them on something they are embracing or trying
A2:For a colleague, get to know them and make time to eat lunch and chat. Building strong relationships = Strong Team
A1: We take time to share successful practices, everyone gets to have a turn ! We document everything in a collaborative doc.
From a fellow math teacher, love the use of numbers in your 2x10 relationship building idea!
Yrs ago, read an article about pulling 2 S's names daily and engaging in non-academic convo w them the next day
A2:Just talk to Ss about themselves. Buy a colleague a pop or coffee etc.
I'm a big fan of being authentic. Do it with authenticity or don't do it.
A2 give them 3 minutes of your time and an ear
For a colleague, maybe a simple F2F conversation or email might brighten them up!
A2 Greet them, ask Q, show interest, check-ins, I am interestd b/c relatshp so important, need connections
Thanks Holly! It has made an incredible difference with disengaged students. Would work with staff as well!
showing personal caring AND academic caring encourages learning so much!
So true. I try to get my daughter to understand that. I hope she does.
A2 I note things that impress me. I have a good eye for seeing the ways Ts and Ss shine & commenting on it is easy.
Are colleagues just fellow Ts - or what about the rest of the staff? https://t.co/7X5HpfjwsW
A2:For a colleague, get to know them and make time to eat lunch and chat. Building strong relationships = Strong Team
A2; Chocolate or work to brighten anyones day.
my Ss are the Ts. They could give shout outs through a class twitter account using a class hastag
Another great strategy! Relationship is key to create a learning environment!
A1: individual student conferences to discuss their success & what they need from me
A2 I think putting stickers on a student's paper (even in hs) can be a small but meaningful display of support
It's number one in my book. No relationship, little learning if any.
A2 I also try to ask students "what do you think?" and "why is that?" empowerment!!
I do home visits for all my Ss. I take notes about their home life which I bring into conversations.
As a HS T, I had 80+ students at a time. This worked well and kept me on track
A2 I talk to my st about things other than school, and I ask them how they would improve the class.
I'm just curious if recognition is differentiated or the same
What is it about the sticker! I used to LOVE them. Especially scratch and sniff.
My HS students loved stickers! You are so right!
Q3 Imagine you could do ANYTHING you wanted on Mar. 1. What would it be? What’s in the way? How can you make it happen?
Also, most of my Ss are in outside activities. I try to make time to attend them. Then post on IG/Twitter
Feel free to send some my way.
Absolutely. Totally agree. https://t.co/F2QtDDDOW5
A2 Simple smile first. Handwritten note or positive comment about them specifically, too. Remember we are human first. :)
A2: we have faculty high 5 cards that we fill out at faculty meetings & draw a few out of hat for gift cards.
A1: These are all great ideas. I think I would give children positive words of encouragement and a special shout out.
I LOVE giving people handwritten notes, I'm a stationary addict! https://t.co/bFb6kz4r87
Handwritten notes are so rare these days - I find they are much appreciated.
What valuable feedback and a way to show value to students.
A3: March 1st - anything? - not taking Iowa Assessment state tests all morning long!
They would melt in the Florida sun by the time they got there. :-)
Totally agree.Just wrote recent blog for about building relatshps & how helps, I use w/ Ss
A3: make sure all Ts had tools/pd needed to be comfortable w/integrating tech in classroom,T's perception,wk w/Ts to train/prep
A3) I would like to do one of those virtual field trips!!
A3) I would want my future students to know how much I care about them . . .
A3 ...I would want to sleep all day on March 1st. But college classes are getting in the way ;)
. A3: pick a project together and starting working on it. The curriculum I need to teach is getting in the way.
Where do you get your favorite stationary from?
I just lovingly wrote a card to a colleague - I too have tons of stationery in my home office.
That would be heaven! Love integration but the training/prep/time. Ahhhhh!
I want to spend time with my best friends in college. The only thing stopping me? Myself. https://t.co/YL2GFrvRaa
Q3 Imagine you could do ANYTHING you wanted on Mar. 1. What would it be? What’s in the way? How can you make it happen?
I appreciate handwritten notes...yet I rarely think to send them
A3: Take everyone to spend the day at the ! Whole school & staff field trip. In the way: short notice & $$.
That is so often the case. How do we work past that? Be aware and refuse to be our own enemy?
If you have ever saved a special handwritten note, as I have, you know how much they can mean.
A2 Provide them with a picture. Tell them a joke. Depends on the student or colleage.
Target always has the cutest!
A3: I would love to give the Ss a day off and have a day to work on catching up. Or give Ss a day to do what they want.
Thanks for the tip! I love stationary, too.
A2: I would often go outside during recess and play games with students (basketball, soccer)
That's a great idea. An unexpected gift.
A3 get to or an Take my Ss to another conf, showcase their talents, learn more,
Absolutely. They are unmatched.
and not be the referee!!!
A2: Other times I would take out my guitar and play & sing with students
A3: Become instructional specialisl. We don't currently have these positions. Wld love to help Ts integrate tech n2 learning.
Have the opportunity to teach about tech in a foreign country and see how integration looks there. $$ https://t.co/6nJ6wSpGAg
Q3 Imagine you could do ANYTHING you wanted on Mar. 1. What would it be? What’s in the way? How can you make it happen?
Would it help to keep them on your desk? I get behind in them, too.
A2: Listen to them. Meet them where they are. Hold off on the critiques and solutions, and encourage them to enjoy being them!
A2: For colleagues I would write personnel messages saying what I appreciate the most about them.
A3:A day of fun! Playtime is going away & I want them to have fun. Building much needed social skills w/ their peers.
Ugh- $$$. Such a culprit. DonorsChoose? Kickstarter?
what I hear fr Ts too...lack of time&feeling overwhelmed, perfect world we could tailor it in a regular schedule
Great to see you here, by the way!
Q4 What song, quote or person inspires you during those tougher days?
A3: Have the new office all set up and throw a big party!
A3. I would travel the world. Work obligations. Become my own boss.
I would also love to see blended learning at
I think stashing cute cards, etc. in a visible place would be a good reminder.
Twitter chats like these help dont they? ;) Or having people there to always remind you what's important.
A3 hang out with for a day or 20
well and contacts. Not sure why would want me to come teach tech for short term trip!
Also check out , if you're looking to empower your Ss thru creation and entrepreneurship!
Hmmm... I love challenges like this.
A3: Find a job as an instructional coach or job working with beginning teachers. Restriction? Love my students - can't leave
A4: Keep calm and carry on

Brain boost! Stand up-shout out-"Time to "igniteyourSHINE!" 3x's Tweet that phrase, jump back in! https://t.co/50u5vDgZ7D
A4: My team! They understand exactly what I'm going through... we really rely on each other and I am SO thankful for them.
Q3 I would have all of my homework done..That's unlikely being that I have to work 8 hour shifts everyday until Weds..haha
We sure need these kind of reminders. I prefer a chat over a tragedy being a reminder. Go, !
I'm looking forward to celebrating tomorrow!
my PLN, and my workout playlist!
my PLN, and my workout playlist!

A5: Inspire because it's what I hope I do with Ss & Ts and know they do for me
A5) Exceptional. It's really easy to forget that all of our students are excptional in some way, shape, or form.
To be us. The exceptional person we were meant to be.

If you take action to do so, then I'm confident you do. :)
I think it was sent out via ESP. :-)
Q6 What is 1 thing you are committing to do this year for YOURSELF? Just you. A non-negotiable. How will you make it happen?
