Welcome to #engsschat! Thanks for joining us tonight. In honor of National Novel Writing Month (November), we're talking "Writing to Learn" in the classroom. Please take a moment to introduce your self, what you teach, etc. #engchat#sschat#edchat#elachat
A1: In both impromptu and process writing, I'm looking for students to clarify their own ideas--sometimes they gain a greater understanding... and sometimes they figure out what question to ask next! #engsschat
A1) Writing helps us organize, clarify, and communicate our ideas. Writing should also help us be better readers as we learn how arguments are structured and supported with evidence. #engsschat
A1: I ask students to write because we don't learn from our experiences we learn from reflecting on those experiences. I'm hoping students are being reflective and inquisitive about their learning in terms of where their learning could go next. #engsschat
A1. This can change depending on the topic, but It's important that students can connect the topic to real world surroundings that might be eventing their current life. #CCED336#engsschat
A1: I ask students to write because we don't learn from our experiences we learn from reflecting on those experiences. I'm hoping students are being reflective and inquisitive about their learning in terms of where their learning could go next. #engsschat
#engsschat A1: Because I am student teaching AP courses, a lot of the writing that is assigned is to prepare the students for the AP test and to get them to think critically about the questions that are going to be asked
Q1 It depends on the audience. Writing could be to engage in a civil conversation online, or communicate conclusions using textual evidence, or writing could be to advocate to take informed civic action- to name a few examples. #engsschat
A1: I ask students to write because I feel that it's often times easier to put pen to paper, than to say how you feel. I also think that writing is a skill students will take with them for the rest of their lives! #osussmce#engsschat
A1: Students write in my classroom to organize their thoughts, expand on ideas we discuss in class and create connections between events #engsschat#ssvpln
A1: I ask students to write in my classroom so they can begin to develop skills that they will need in the real world. Also some students feel the most comfortable conveying their thoughts through writing. #osussmce#engsschat
Q1:I put the writing skills into words I hope they understand and grow alongside:
1. You all have something important to say.
2. There is brilliance in confusion, hash it out on paper.
3. For AP Lit -- you will be better in May than you are today. Keep going. #engchat#engsschat
A1: Writing helps students organize their thoughts! Im in an AP World history class and we are always working on essay writing in preparation for the exam. #engsschat#ssvpln
A1: I have students write to help them organize their thoughts and contextualize what we are learning. I think writing is an important skill that when used correctly hits upon higher order thinking and analysis skills #engsschat#sschat
A2: I love to have student write RAFT assignments to show understanding of a character and plot of a text. Writing helps Ss to walk in the shoes of another perspective/POV. #engsschat
A1 To check for comprehension. Being able to analyze and pull main ideas in concepts from texts, especially informational, are essential not only academically, but in life. #engsschat
A2) Have them write in a variety of contexts - essays, persuasive pieces, letters or other writings as historical figures or people from a particular time, etc. Writing dialogue/speech bubbles for images works, too! #engsschat
A2: In summative writing/projects, I ask students to identify a pattern that's *meaningful to them*. Then--let me help you use the writing skills we're working on to express your ideas with *clarity* #engsschat
A2: I have recently began developing the use of portfolios in my classes to assess student learning. They are required to do a good amount of reflective writing. I also like how #pbl experiences promote the utilization of writing to demo. learning. #engsschat
A2: I think that writing can also expand from just original pencil and writing. I ask my students to write through technology and typing as well to help them make better connections and help them have multiple ways to demonstrate their knowledge. #osussmce#engsschat
A1: I ask students to write because we don't learn from our experiences we learn from reflecting on those experiences. I'm hoping students are being reflective and inquisitive about their learning in terms of where their learning could go next. #engsschat
#sschat#engsschat In every way possible: Museum displays, journals, plays, multi-form posters, poems, cartoons, storyboards, songs, presentations, debates, role plays, etc. Using the writing process model is the secret
A2: I like to have students use writing to "talk back" to authors through letters, reflective essays, critiques/reviews, or spin off texts #engsschat#isuenged
A2: I think writing in many forms could allow my students to demonstrate their learning of course content such as essay format, poetry, song lyrics, etc. I think it's important to expose them to many types of writing. #osussmce#engsschat
Q2 I often use writing for students to reflect and address the essential question of the unit. I also use discussion boards for students to share their conclusions with their peers for feedback, alternative perspectives and promote further inquiry. #engsschat
Right--and it's about what you do with that new understanding next, too! Paraphrase, and then tell your audience (you, me, your peers) why it matters #engsschat
A1: Writing helps with comprehension and the organization of thoughts. It also allows students to think critically and respond to new information, POVs, etc. #ssvpln#engsschat
Awesome--what kinds of discussion boards are you currently using? I've found that google classroom just don't cut it for Ss to comment on other Ss ideas #engsschat
Welcome to #engsschat! Thanks for joining us tonight. In honor of National Novel Writing Month (November), we're talking "Writing to Learn" in the classroom. Please take a moment to introduce your self, what you teach, etc. #engchat#sschat#edchat#elachat
#engsschat A2: Writing is used to show that students can make broader connections between themes in the unit and to show that they can synthesize broad ideas into a cohesive narrative
A2: I have students work though complex historical analysis through writing. Cause and effect, comparison, and change and continuities. #engsschat#ssvpln
A2 research papers on a topic of their choosing, essays, document analysis, creation of original song lyrics, drawing a summary, making a comic to match text with illustration, creating a modern fairy tale to teach about nationalism, annotating notes, asking questions #engsschat
A2 I have also starting using the protocol of chalk talk or graffiti boards to help students process, collaborate, inquire and share understanding. Here is a link from @facinghistory for more information https://t.co/VISPPYNF0l#engsschat
A2: I have my students show their content mastery through various writing assignments, making resumes for historical figures, persuasive arguments, analysis of historical events through DBQs and Long essays #engsschat
A2: Writing allows students to make connections across content and disciplines. It is an effective way for students to analyze new information. #ssvpln#engsschat
Phil checking in late from Sarasota. Currently teaching 6th WH and 7th AH. Just able to lurk for a while tonight. Hate to miss this chat but will check the archives. #engsschat
Many reasons - in order to express themselves in a coherent way, to argue their thoughts and opinions while using evidence...
(Unpopular answer: to practice DBQ on state EOC 😬)
#engsschat
They create blues songs to discuss breaking up of empires, raps about modern civil rights issues, and more. They can adapt from a song or create their own. #engsschat
I like using @InsertLearning to integrate questions and concepts into informative texts to test their reading skills and their integration/comprehension of key concepts. #engsschat
A2: Firstly, summarizing a location or place in the world is a great step. Then, I'm really trying to get the compare/contrast going with our country and the country we currently are studying. Trying to incorporate more writing! #engsschat
A2 always use write to inform, argue/persuade or narrative/tell a story. Our ss teachers have adopted our ELA teachers language so kids know expectations. #engsschat
My students do a lot of FRQs to prepare them for the AP Gov exam in May. We focus on different aspects of writing (thesis statements, transitions, etc.) to help them write as efficiently as possible. #engsschat
Although I'm just student teaching and in a math placement, I still see a lot of writing happening. My mentor does a great job of having students write short argumentative answers as to why they solved the problem correctly #osussmce#engsschat
A2: Allowing Ss time to write before discussions is beneficial bc it gives them time to process their thoughts & form ideas that they didn’t even know they had before writing. This makes participating in discussions more interesting and less intimidating. #engsschat
Late to party, Soc. studies T from PA! A3: Ss blog each week about a news event. Ss write historic fiction, RAFT's, spoken-word, scripts for historic plays, and songs. Just to name a few. #engsschat
I would like to include narrative, nonfiction, and argumentative writing in my class. Narratives allow students to relate ideas to themselves, nonfiction enables student to review the material, and argumentative forces students to write supportive evidence
#engsschat
A2: Allowing Ss time to write before discussions is beneficial bc it gives them time to process their thoughts & form ideas that they didn’t even know they had before writing. This makes participating in discussions more interesting and less intimidating. #engsschat
A3 #engsschat#sschat In every way possible: Museum displays, journals, plays, multi-form posters, poems, cartoons, storyboards, songs, presentations, debates, role plays, etc. Using the writing process model is the secret. Scaffolds make the difference in student success.
A3: My license will be SS and math but I am in a math placement now. In math, we have students write justifications for what they answered and I think this extends to other disciplines as well. I will want my SS students to be able to defend their reasoning #osussmce#engsschat
Whenever students are able to flex their creative muscles is always a good time for them and I! I love argumentative assignments too. In a world where they don't always get a say, they enjoy assignments where they do #engsschat#ssvpln
A3: I try to mix up the writing assignments so we may do historical resumes, DBQs, speeches, writing for debates, reflection pieces where students reflect on their learning. We also are constantly practicing how to back up an argument with specific evidence #engsschat
A3: My mentor sets up different stations that correlate with parts of an essay they might see on the AP exam. Ss end up constructing an essay out of order and get a better understanding of essay construction #engsschat#ssvpln
A3) As many types as I can think of though I'd like to work more into my online world history course. Currently have a few RAFTs, white "paper" (paragraphs), reflections, essays, document analysis, etc. #engsschat
A3 Here is a post I did on a strategy that a college professor uses to get kids to master the skill of rebutting claims to an argument. It's called the "4-sentence paper" It works soooooo well. https://t.co/pVKNjs28sM#engsschat#engsschat
I love narrative writing to help Ss find voice and process texts of any style. Allowing for creativity can help increase comprehension, understanding, and foster empathy. #engsschat
A3: My favorite, and often the most creative, S writing products come from informal, formative writing... e.g. In the last 10 min of class, work w/ a partner to write a convo between 2 char. as if they were alive today #engsschat
#engsschat Q3: While most of the writing done in class is mainly analytical essays, there are also research papers that can be assigned or document analysis sheets (like APPARTS) that are used to get students to think critically about primary sources
A1: As a pre-service teacher I plan to ask my students to write in my classroom to encourage curiosity and deeper thinking. I hope they develop skills in critical thinking and begin to form connections to the world around them! #engsschat
A3 Have really been using modern formats to help historical thinking. Twitter templates for Ss to show what cultural region they are in, for example. Twitter example is great for summaries #engsschat
A3: Anyone play with having Ss get their thoughts out verbally before they write with a tool like @Flipgrid? I think giving kids a chance to brainstorm verbally then write is helpful especially for kids with ADD or ADHD. #engsschat
A3: I work with some pretty reluctant writers. One thing I often start with is observations - tell me what you see and why it's important? Then, I hope to go deeper and offer creative options as well. I've used letters, posters, and even fake twitter pages in the past! #engsschat
A3: In analytical writing, always emphasizing finding + supporting the best argument--not worrying about whether or not it's *perfect*--just write and revise until you're proud #engsschat
A3: I do not have a classroom yet, but I am an aide in classrooms and my teacher uses a lot of nonfiction writing and narratives with her young students. #engsschat
A3 #engsschat we do a lot of argumentative writing around current & controversial issues. We also produce non-fiction, informational texts in taking informed civic action. In each of these endeavors, we leverage digital media to write for authentic audiences.
Document based question essay. Students are given documents and a question and students write an essay based on prior knowledge and the evidence provided. It’s one of the essays students are required to do for the AP exam but they are useful for all classes #engsschat
A3: In English class, it is important for Ss to have many opportunities to practice writing for varying purposes... There are many ways we write in our everyday lives that require skills not practiced while writing traditional 5 paragraph essays. #engsschat#engchat
A1: I would ask students in my classroom to write on things like short stories and reflections to learn things like punctuation, proper sentence structure and so on. #engsschat
A3 we've done writing to inform about issues surrounding the rainforest. Writing to persuade others to take action.
Written to inform and entertain as a tour guide of significant landmarks.
Would love ss to create a character from a part of the world in geography
#engsschat
I don't collaborate a great deal as of now. Time in the day doesn't allow for time to discuss and design prompts. However, I just finished a course in PBL, and interdisciplinary education is a cornerstone. #engsschat
A4 #sschat#engsschat Working with an ELA teacher in an integrated setting is teaching joy. You get to have adult to adult conversation and can specialize in your own subject.
A4: I wish I could collaborate with other disciplines more. I love the connections my Ss make to psychology in a speech classroom. They often reference that content in their speech reflections! #engsschat
A3: We tend to focus on narrative and persuasive writing through letters to the editor, blog posts, and brief sequels for books we've read #engsschat#isuenged
A4: The 8th gr English T and I try to collab once a year on a writing project. We've done music analysis and this year's Shark Tank Econ project they will write a 30-second "elevator pitch" #engsschat
A3 In history, I like more creative writing lessons to have the students put themselves in the shoes of people in historical eras. I am developing a roleplaying game this year where Ss make characters and have summative family journal creative writing assessments #engsschat
A4: I work with the AP Language teacher to help with writing. We share the same students and they types of essays we need our students to write are similar so we work together #engsschat
Yes! We are humanities teachers! But beyond social studies and Language Arts, we are all teachers of reading and writing. No more important skills. I have planned many historical lessons to support books in LA. Same skills - textual evidence and analysis #engsschat
A4: I haven't done this as a teacher but my HS English teacher & APUSH teacher designed a project where we had to read 1 classic American novel from each time period we learned about. I read so many good books and it was a great collab across disciples #ssvpln#engsschat
I've been reading about RAFT in @katrinakennett's course about literacy and technology in content areas. RAFT is such a great instructional tool that can be used in multiple disciplines, do you utilize this tool often? #engsschat
A4--Does anyone do cross-content writing in a HS setting--several teachers teaching the same course with different students in different classes? Would love to hear about logistics here #engsschat
A4 In philosophy class I implement an assignment where they must use a philosophical idea in writing in another class (usually it's English), sometimes science though. #engsschat
A4: The focus of my 7th grade team's school year is to integrate writing meaningfully in all core subjects. We get together each week to discuss progress and how we can tie similar ideas into each content area such as supporting an argument. #osussmce#engsschat
A4: In math we use writing activities. For me it's not always about if the students got the right answer number, I want to know and understand the process they took to get there. So even though they are short writing activities they are still there #osussmce#engsschat
Have to specially collaborated, but we often pre-teach vocabulary in SS. Our geography unit pairs well with the text Ss are using in ELA “A Long Walk to Water.” #engsschat
A4: I tend to be somewhat limited in collaboration as a multi-grade literacy specialist, but I try to incorporate assignments and themes from gen ed classes whenever possible #engsschat#isuenged
Q4 #engsschat We have a number of interdisciplinary courses in which ELA and SocStu teachers co teach: Global Studies, World Studies, American Studies, Latino Studies.
When I am no longer a pre-service teacher I would love to collaborate across content. There are so many ways to build student knowledge and skills between the English and Social Studies curriculum #engsschat#ssvpln
A4: In the past, I have collaborated with an ELA teacher on a persuasive project when my 7th grade class covered advertising. I'd like to get back on that train again with something different now that I teach geography! #engsschat
A4 - here is a sample of how I support Language Arts with Frankenstein . #engsschathttps://t.co/o8qa8gX7aH - students create the Monster for today - enough to break your what. So powerful.
A4: I haven't had an opportunity to collaborate as a student-teacher but I would love to! It would be amazing to plan an ELA/SS inquiry project. #engsschat#ssvpln
A4) While I don't coordinate assignments, I have gotten many of amazing teaching ideas from Eng. teachers. I have started a folder of mentor texts for mini-lessons. Some are just sentence length, but they help students see how historians construct arguments. #engsschat
Thanks for all the ideas about collaboration. This is often difficult to coordinate schedules and across classess. Question 5 is coming up shortly. #engsschat
A4 In our civics course, students write public policy proposals and reach out to other disciplines to write expert testimony to support their proposals. #engsschat
A4: I look forward to integrating math and science into my writing lessons someday. The flipped classroom practice would be great for this to have ample class time to focus on writing and linguistics of two subjects. #engsschat
A4 while not a collaborative assignment, my freshmen are always appreciative when I can explain the similarities and differences between the disciplinary writing moves they need to bring to their world cultures’ papers and their English ones #engsschat
A1: I want my students to write to develop and strength their speaking and explarion skills. It benefits them in life and gains confidence in opinions! #engsschat
A5: Whenever students create something that isn't necessarily writing based, they write a reflection on the process, on knowledge gained and clarified! #engsschat
A5) Each of the lessons in my online world history courses contain reflection prompts that students respond to focusing on what they learned, how they learned it, and what they will do with what they learned. #engsschat
A2: I think reflections are the key to this! It allows them to spill their thoughts, concerns and knowledge on paper. Also, it allows us to know how well their understanding is. #engsschat
A5. I love using short writing prompts as bell ringer activities. Having Ss write allows them time to process previous course content or prepare to dig into a new concept that period. #engsschat
A5: One of my favorite questions to ask in a post-summative project reflection: "What would you have done differently if you had 24 more hours to do this assignment?" Don't know if it's too useful, but it's revealing! #engsschat
A5: I think a good way to encourage reflection is to have students keep a journal that they write in each day. I don't think it needs to be graded, I would encourage students to really think about their learning and the processes that were used that day. #osussmce#engsschat
A5 Trying a new reflection around grades. Ss have been tracking weekly grade reports. Want to see what Ss think impact their grade and what their grade actually reflects. #engsschat
#engsschat A4: When I am no longer a student teacher, getting to design interdisciplinary activities. There is so much to learn from other disciplines and skills that can be applied to the social studies classroom.
A5) Each of the lessons in my online world history courses contain reflection prompts that students respond to focusing on what they learned, how they learned it, and what they will do with what they learned. #engsschat
Q5: I find it useful to build toward deeper reflection over time. We'll start out with quick writes on sticky notes or with sentence frames as we're reading. Then we move toward more sustained reflective journals as students build stamina #engsschat#isuenged
A5 I really need to get better at this. I try to in my informative articles and have start d pulling out good answers from students to spur discussion, but feel like I miss a lot in the mix when it comes to giving Ss feedback.#engsschat
Yes! I like having Ss journal after major summative assignments. This allows them to reflect on their process, what they learned, and how they used time/resources to complete a task. Journaling helps Ss process. #engsschat
A5 I am having my own children reflect upon their reading and sharing with an authentic audience - you! Check out #SmythReads for their journey. Next is getting my students to do the same and teach out to authors. #engsschat
A5 I encourage Ss after seminar discussions to explore a point made in discussion in greater depth. I count those reflections as 'participation'. Some of Ss best ideas need to marinate a little before they write about them. #engsschat
A5: I want to try to encourage reflection by having students write in journals, in short prompts, and even through looking back on old concepts that they struggled with to help them see their growth as a student and as a person #osussmce#engsschat
A5: After our lecture on voter participation I'll ask students to reflect on ways they believe we (society) can increase voter participation. We'll use https://t.co/5gUQiaorNp to provide students with ideas and background information to help them build ideas #engsschat#ssvpln
A3: As a pre-service teacher I have not assigned anything yet. For my prep lesson plans, I am currently including memoir writing. We are trying to teach them how to self reflect in formal matter to let the world learn from lessons. #engsschat
A5: Self-reflection is SO IMPORTANT. Social-emotional learning and self-evaluation is something that I LOVE incorporating in my classes. Reflections on the week via google form are a favorite of mine! #engsschat
A5 I also want to do more of this for my Social Studies Through Comics class next semester with journals or something to push reflection and discussion. #engsschat
A5 More often have Ss reflect at the end of the unit on our essential question. For geography unit our question is “how does where you live impact how you live?” #engsschat
A5: I love the idea of using personal reflections for exit tickets. My MT always tells her students to have a good day & will ask them how they will achieve a good day. Having students write it out-- even if we don't see it-- is a great way for us to end class #ssvpln#engsschat
A5: my school is implementing digital portfolios and reflections are a vital part in this process. I try to have my students think about what went well and something they could improve upon. I also do peer reflections where students share constructive feedback #engsschat
A4: I think a collaboration with poetry unit and a History unit would be awesome! Ss could write poems from the perspective of historical figures to offer deeper insight and critical thinking to what these people may have been thinking/feeling/experiencing #engsschat
Yes! You probably know this, but the technical word for this is a persona poem, and there are so many amazing professional examples out there to use as models! #engsschat
A4 I've talked to the ELA teacher to try and coordinate, but haven't made it happen yet. Once I get my pacing down more, I think it will be more possible. But I feel like trying to coordinate when I am not sure on my pacing isn't fair or nice. #engsschat
A5: my wife, @RealMrsByrnes, has her Ss write letters as if they're somebody else writing a speech to be given at their 50th birthday party. The speech discusses what kind of person the SS have developed into. #REFLECTION#CharacterEdu#engsschat
A4: I would love to collaborate with other discipline. I think this is so important in a school community for the students to learn through connections and understanding the matter in other areas. #engsschat
This is awesome! I'm absolutely going to steal this idea for my AVID students this year. I love the idea of students envisioning themselves as successful, established adults in the future. #engsschat
A5: my wife, @RealMrsByrnes, has her Ss write letters as if they're somebody else writing a speech to be given at their 50th birthday party. The speech discusses what kind of person the SS have developed into. #REFLECTION#CharacterEdu#engsschat
a5: Writing will force the students to really focus on what they are trying to convey. A lot of times it will take a student to a deeper level of thinking. #CCED336#engsschat
A5: Asking Ss how the text impacted them, changed their views, or invoked different emotions is such a huge part of reflection. Then, allowing students time to sit with their feelings, write them down and reflect encourages a deeper thinking of the purpose of the text. #engsschat
A5: It is important for teachers to show students the value in being reflective; reflection should be a common practice in the classroom! Daily journals are an awesome way to start class off on a productive note, as well as have students respond to a reflective prompt! #engsschat
#engsschat I like the idea of a "Do Now" activity that can encompass a wide variety of topics. In my class we have covered everything from Kavanaugh to Khashoggi. While not related to specific educational goals, students reflect on their personal beliefs and values
A6: I love using RAFTs. Having Ss write letters from one character to another in a text is a great way to summarize information and critically think about actions and intentions of others. #engsschat
Q5, I often give a visual prompt for Ss to reflect on their own learning and how they feel about their understanding, mastery or even comfort with learning. Here is an example below. Students could choose an image for different reasons- writing shows this #engsschat
A6. Using this comic to teach about evidence based essay writing. As a content driven course, skills can be overlooked. We take a break from content. Comic is from the Stormtrooper POV. Prompt - are Stormtroopers good or evil? Defend using only evidence in this comic #engsschat
A6: I like to use Google Forms so Ss can anonymously write their ideas to a question down. I then use the answers to form a class consensus! #engsschat#ssvpln
A6. Using this comic to teach about evidence based essay writing. As a content driven course, skills can be overlooked. We take a break from content. Comic is from the Stormtrooper POV. Prompt - are Stormtroopers good or evil? Defend using only evidence in this comic #engsschat
A6 Series of Tweets from Langston Hughes, “Theme for English B” rewrite, “I Too, Am an American” rewrite. Basically, any writing that helps students see and prove themselves equally knowledgeable on a text/author/time period and their own voices as people, writers #engsschat
Q6: I love writing a new ending to a story or writing a letter to an author. Another fun one I did when I was younger was writing (and sending) a business letter to a company and seeing if the co. replied, they often sent back stickers or a coupon!#engsschat#engchat
A6: One activity that I observed was the social studies teacher had put out clues around the room about a 'crime' that was committed. She had also used characters that the students talked about. Students had to write who did it supporting with the facts found.#osussmce#engsschat
A6: We have students write something they were confused about or unsure on from the lesson. Then they throw it to the front of the class, go pick up a new paper ball, and answer the question then return it to that student. It's writing and collaboration! #osussmce#engsschat
A6: We have students write newspaper headlines or tweets about current events! It's a quick and easy way to make students pay attention to world events! They can pick any story that interests them, whether it is local, state, national, or international #ssvpln#engsschat
A3: Besides the typical DBQ and 5 paragraph essay, I have my students complete student-choice projects that include blogs, script writing, website design, and short stories. #engsschat
A6: To demonstrate knowledge of sonnets, rewrite one of your favorite songs as a sonnet + be as silly as you'd like--just demonstrate your knowledge. I show this as an example... #engsschat#fromwestphilidelphia
Late but I want to try to chime in at least once. Have any of you tried The Rhetorical Precis? I’ve used it for years for expository texts & it’s great. #engsschathttps://t.co/cQeAgF7XSw
A6 After Reading portions of Don Quixote, I had students write their own epitaph on Twitter. Not too easy to sum up a life in so few characters. Teaches less is more and summary skills. Also - importance of prewriting #engsschat
A6 Ss respond to a philosophical quotation in writing by restating the philosopher's position (on half sheet). One Student reads class restatements-- Ss have option of claiming credit for response by raising hand. Otherwise, anonymous #engsschat
Found an article that basically says a fox does make those noises. You do not really have to listen to the song... but you also kind of do... #engsschat
A4: We don't collaborate on specific assignments but we make sure that we use the same verbiage so that Ss can see the overlap between both disciplines. We will sometimes do activities in one class that help brainstorm a writing/reflection for the other. #engsschat
A4: In a class I’m an aide for, the students are learning to gather context clues and information from a passage that is read to them and then form a paper on it. #engsschat
A6: Exploratory writing! @KellyGToGo purposes a great mentor text "What Women Really Do in the Bathroom." Students are asked to explore their own questions, for example: "Why Teachers Drink So Much Coffee" this is a great bridge to inquiry, and it's fun! #engchat#engsschat
A5: A teacher I aide for asks her students use writing to encourage reflection by asking students to write a small paragraph on the lesson they learned about the past week to see how they felt and if they retained anything. #engsschat
A6: When I have my one class, I am very excited to see some creative writing come from them whether it’s poetry or 6 word stories. Also, persuasive essays on topics they’re passionate to see their hearts poured out in work. #engsschat
Q6: Someone in my class recently mentioned that a neat writing assignment would be to create a resume for a character in a book! This not only allows Ss to demonstrate understanding of the character, but also gives them a chance to practice resumé building. #engsschat
A7) Students aren't always enthusiastic about writing. Tie it to things they're passionate about that they've had to practice to improve - music, sports, public speaking, acting, video games, etc. #engsschat
A7: Always, always, always do something to prep students for writing. A picture/ad/newspaper headline on the board, a 2 min convo w/ group members, create bulletpoint list first, word bank on the board... plan for writing and you'll get better writing! #engsschat
A6: I like to have students read about a historical event in a textbook and then check different historical newspapers to see how the event was covered. Then they compare/contrast textbook to news coverage. #engsschat
A6: I love to have my students fake tweet. It helps them get their thoughts out succinctly and can help with thesis and topic sentence writing. #engsschat
A6: as mentioned before I don’t have a classroom yet. Although my favorite writing activities I hope to use in the future would be creative writing/story telling and fiction stories because I think it encourages creativity. #engsschat
