Hi everyone. I'm Tonya from Richmond, VA. I teach Spanish prek-5 and work with student leaders. First time joining #EduGladiators! I'm usually just waking up, if I'm honest. 😂
Q1. Educators have so much power in a child's life. Who was that teacher or educator that made an impact in your life? How has that impacted your career and outlook on life? #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A1. Mrs. Lewis was my 2nd grade teacher. She invited me to class for a pizza party and got to me and my story. Influenced me as an educator, because it shows the importance of learning our students story and learning who they are. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A1. I have SO many that have influenced my life. Richard Allington was one of the most recent one's as he guided my learning about literacy as a principal. #EduGladiators
Jack Heater was my assigned mentor when I became a principal. He helped me grow as an administrator, but most importantly he helped me grow as a human being. He showed me how to lead with integrity, humility and love. #edugladiators
A1 I was one of the lucky ones that loved and remember all of my teachers. School was my safe place and my teachers inspired me to dream big! #EduGladiators
A1 My grade 6 teacher Mr. Riley, he was a great teacher. He was big into Science, he brought in animals and we did a lot exploration and experimenting in his class. He genuinely loved teaching and kids ❤️ #Edugladiators
A1: In MS, a teacher who didn't teach me pulled me inside and saw I was angry and challenged me to see the positive in others. Made a huge difference in who I am and how I support kids. #edugladiators
A1 In the 70's I was in an open area classroom (5th - 7th grade - 60 students) We had 3 amazing Ts who allowed us to follow our passions, create projects & vote on how the class was run. Best years of my education & what I reflect on when envisioning my school #EduGladiators
A1 For me, it was Mrs. Smith my second grade teacher. I made a lot of poor decisions and I was labeled a troublemaker by many of the teachers in the building but she believed in me it worked hard to get to the root of the problem. She Understood me.#EduGladiators
A1) Every educator I had has made an impact on my life. However, Mrs. Benetton, Mrs. White, Mrs. Briggs, Mr. Winterfield, Mrs. Prost and a host of so many others. It is unfair to name just these educators. #EduGladiators
A1: I had a science and math teacher that demonstrated patience and forgiveness a lot with a terrible class ( we really were the worst) but it showed me how to manage teenagers without utilizing punishment and fear. #EduGladiators
A2) I was inspired to become an educator by 4th grade teacher Mr. Barnard. I volunteered in his classroom when I was in high school. It looked like the greatest job and it is! #EduGladiators
A1: My English Teacher. She realised I was an audio learner and figured out how to teach me Shakespeare. She's the reason I'm an educator today. She didn't give up on me, made a connection and helped me succeed! #edugladiators
A1 one of my law school professors, taught the value of relationships and has been a mentor to me ever since, it led me to change my teaching practice and recognize the importance of those connections #EduGladiators
A1: Stephen Jennings: high school math teacher. At boarding school I got suspended for three days; he knew I couldn’t go home; he let me stay with his family. First time I felt accepted and welcome. #EduGladiators
A1 Mrs Nichols, Eng teacher, she held me to high expectations, inspired me to pursue education, but she made me feel valued in her classroom - I was a little ornery, so that was huge! #edugladiators
A1: There were certainly some K-12 teachers but today I give a shoutout to Ms. Bell who pushed me in college. She taught public speaking and helped me strengthen up an area that I struggled with for many years. #EduGladiators

RT of Q1. Educators have so much power in a child's life. Who was that teacher or educator that made an impact in your life? How has that impacted your career and outlook on life? #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
My art teacher...Dr. Rigli from elementaryschool! Was fascinated he was a “doctor” and his unconditional support and love to a deathly shy little me made the world of difference for me as a kid...I hope I am even half as amazing as him! #EduGladiators
A1 I never had a teacher take a personal interest in me. Back in my day the value of relationships in education wasn’t a priority. That’s why I appreciate today’s teachers and mentor a student.#EduGladiators
A1) Elizabeth Graves
7th grade English Teacher.
My parents got divorced that year.
She believed in me, loved me, pushed me, and waited with me.
I’m who I am because of who she is.
#EduGladiators

a1. Answering as a police officer, long ago I attended a 3-day training class by an instructor who embraced & modeled concept-based education (as opposed to technique- or skill-based). Changed my whole outlook on learning & training. #EduGladiators
My 5th grade math teacher was the first to impact my life in an impactful way. She was always understanding and worked with me with my struggles through math #risdconnects#EduGladiators
All of my administrators played a major role in my life as well. I am actually with my former middle school principal Dr. Onick right now. #EduGladiators
A1. I was totally checked out of my high school education and Mr. Tooley helped me get reengaged, find my passion and guided me toward a 40 year career in education helping others. #EduGladiators
A1 I knew in 3rd grade that to wanted to become a T. She was kind/ responsive to Ss needs and established a sense of community. Everyone felt wanted and welcomed. It is so true that people remember the way you make them feel over what you wanted them to learn! #EduGladiators
A1: I have several teachers who inspired me. They all focused heavily on the importance of writing well. Renee Soto, my HS creative writing teacher, took time to talk with me & guide my life. She inspired me to go to college, which is far from the norm in my fam.
#EduGladiators
A1. Mrs. Lewis was my 2nd grade teacher. She invited me to class for a pizza party and got to me and my story. Influenced me as an educator, because it shows the importance of learning our students story and learning who they are. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A1b Mr Riley made me not want to miss school for any reason and he taught me learning should be fun 😀 Something I wholeheartedly believe to this day 👍 #Edugladiators

A1: My 5th grade math teacher was the first to impact my life in an impactful way. She was always understanding and worked with me with my struggles through math #risdconnects#EduGladiators
A1) @waukeshaschools Lawnsdale school - 4th grade. 3 room school house where we had drawing journals watching the bird’s nest from our classroom & more. I discovered that learning could happen many ways & I could learn. #edugladiators
A1 The one educator that made the biggest impact on life was my middle school counselor. She helped me through several tough events. She helped me understand I could make a difference in people’s lives.#EduGladiators#BeTheOne
Q1. Educators have so much power in a child's life. Who was that teacher or educator that made an impact in your life? How has that impacted your career and outlook on life? #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A1 Gary Gribble, my high school Band Directcor. Was there through more than just the class. Shared about life and learning. Treated me with respect. #edugladiators
Q1 My 3rd grade T Mrs LPlac let me read the entire Friday Weekly Reader to the class when I walked in wearing glasses for the first time. She showed so much love and caring w/out saying a word #EduGladiators
A1: my high school counselor; he believed in my ability to win before I even knew I was in the race! He’s the educator I strive to be, everyday! #EDUgladiators#TXed#edleadership
A1: Coach Ross Howatt from @HFHSAthletics. Patient and tolerant of my immaturity, but he saw something better than what I was giving at the time. He cared for me in spite of me. He taught me to live life to the fullest with a higher standard always in perspective. #EduGladiators
Q1. Educators have so much power in a child's life. Who was that teacher or educator that made an impact in your life? How has that impacted your career and outlook on life? #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A1 There are many. I credit my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Speciale, for creating my drive to succeed as a writer. He made me feel special. I try to boost my own Ss in the same way. #edugladiators
A1. Far from one. Mr. Kendall in 2nd grade drove me to see value in listening & asking as a learner. Mrs. Fetters (my mother) HS public speaking - taught me value of balanced debate, speaking in crowds, etc. I could go on and on... #EduGladiators
A1. I also have a critical friend who opened my eyes to situations right in front of me that I saw with clouded glasses. I hope everyone grabs a critical friend. #EduGladiators
A1.b: I'd also like to give a shout out to my mentor, Eileen Renfro during my 1st year of teaching back in 1990. She was so generous with her time and knew when I needed a break. #edugladiators
A1. I have to give a special "shout out" to @conniehamilton who helped me understand how to use Twitter all of those years ago. I doubt I would have been here without her wisdom. #EduGladiators
A1: Mr. Sachse my high school art teacher challenged me to think about my artwork with open-ended projects. He also treated me like a fellow artist, not a student. I run into him once in a while all these years later and our respect for each other is mutual. #EduGladiators
Kudos to that teacher! I'm all about teachers mentoring all kids in their building. We all can step in and help kids. If we don't know who they are, we just have to ask!
#edugladiators
A1: I was lucky to have a lot of Ts impact my life in powerful ways. I remember all of my elementary Ts; they helped me through the death of my dad in 2nd grade. But my middle school & HS teachers are the ones who influenced me in becoming an educator. #edugladiators
#EduGladiators A1 You know, I’ve thought about this question many times and I don’t have one particular teacher who stands out as the one, but I have many who stirred something in me, validated me, inspired me, and made me feel important and smart. Thanks to those many educators!
A1. My kindergartenteacher Ms. Graham! She made learning fun, always got down on the floor to our level & gave the best hugs! I assumed learning would always be fun like that & endeavored to make it so! Important we are engaged w/our Ss & let them know we ❤️them! #EduGladiators
For sure! Interestingly, he left the classroom a few years later. But, while he was there, he made a difference that perhaps he didn't even realize! #edugladiators
A2. I needed an educator that believed in me. I wanted someone that was engaging, fun, and believed in me. That is who I strive to be each day. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
Sometimes having a connection with someone who is not your T is very powerful! Every kid needs a person and if they aren't making that connection with their own T then it is wonderful when another T can step in and fill that role! ❤️🥊 #Edugladiators
A2: I needed an educator to BELIEVE in spite of my home circumstances & tailor the learning around that. I am more sympathetic to that today than ever before, as I have kids from all different walks of life! #Edugladiators#TXed#Edleadership
Exactly. It was the fact that no one asked him to do it that stuck with me and made me want to be better. And that made me happier and more compassionate. #edugladiators
A2: My teacher was understanding of the situation I was in as a kid with my family. She helped me through it and supported me. Now, instead of assuming, I ask my kids for updates and support them through their every day lives #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A2) Honestly, it depends on what year/month/day you’re talking about. Kids change. Rapidly. They need different things at different times.
I needed teachers who could discern that need and respond appropriately.
#EduGladiators
A2: As a S, I needed teachers who were supportive and that I could count on, whether academically or just with life stuff. What I wanted (and thankfully got) is what I also aspire to do for students. #edugladiators
A2: I needed a teacher that I trusted, that knew my needs with out me having to reach out for them to be met(shy kid) and who did not get MAD. I needed someone who showed unconditional caring and excitement for learning as long as challenging my overthinking brain #EduGladiators
A2 I need an educator who loved their job and kids. In elementary school I can only think of 2 teachers who portrayed that. I needed a teacher who was passionate about learning and a whole lot less paperwork 😒 Kill and Drill comes to mind #Edugladiators
A2 one that encouraged me, invested in helping students to succeed, mindful of the words and actions that might impact students,. A few experiences have impacted me to see each student and be available, help them to do their best #EduGladiators

A wonderful thing about becoming an educator is to be able to pick the best qualities of the educators you had throughout your life and carry them into your life, school, family! #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A1 You know, I’ve thought about this question many times and I don’t have one particular teacher who stands out as the one, but I have many who stirred something in me, validated me, inspired me, and made me feel important and smart. Thanks to those many educators!
A2: I needed all kinds. I needed the teacher “friend” but I also needed the all business types. I am that for some and the former for others. #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A2: A patient, kind person who encouraged and never gave up. One that was creative in teaching-especially math and tried to find fun and enjoyment in each day.
I needed a teacher who could look beyond my impulsivity and immaturity. I needed a teacher who could could get me excited about learning. #edugladiators
So true! We all need to be on the lookout for kids who haven't yet found that adult in the building they can connect with. It may be you! #edugladiators
A2 I needed teachers to believe in me and challenged me. I've tried to be that kind of a teacher for my students too. Students rise and surpass the highest of expectations. Keep the bar high! #EduGladiators
A2. I needed someone to notice me and help me. Now, I get to know each student by name and their interests so I can connect with them and create a safe and caring school. #EduGladiators
A2: I needed someone that saw my good through the "noise". Some things never change. I still respond best when people understand the heart behind my actions. As a T, this has given me the ability examine the root of behavior than react to the fruit of an action. #EduGladiators
A2 I needed a strong leader that held me accountable, but approachable. I was often the class clown, so I respected the teachers that held me to higher standards (I was bored). As for me as an educator, I think of them often as i plan and deliver lessons #edugladiators
a2. Again, as a cop, I need(ed) trainers who allow us to experiment w/in a set of boundaries as opposed to repeating a set of choreographed behaviors. As trainer myself, requires much trust & foundational understanding. #EduGladiators
A2: I needed an educator to BELIEVE I was capable in spite of my home circumstances & tailor my learning around that. I am more sympathetic to that today than ever before, as I have kids from all different walks of life! #Edugladiators#TXed#Edleadership
A2 I was very shy and needed Ts who could ‘bring’ out the real me. As a teacher and administrator, I see every child as an individual and do my best to meet them where they are. #EduGladiators
A2: I needed an educator that would challenge and stretch my thinking. I also needed an educator that would help me find relevance in the lessons that I was learning. Those teachers provided examples that I continue to reflect upon. #EduGladiators

I needed an educator that saw my potential and would be relentless in challenging me to defy the stereotypes that would confront me later in life. I was fortunate to have them. #EduGladiators
A2 I needed that T who saw everyone not just those Ss whose behaviors or learning needs placed them in plain sight! This is the reason that I push for advocacy for ALL kids. I could have easily disappeared into the background of any class. #EduGladiators
A2 I needed someone who was patient & motivating. I needed multiple strategies to learn math, especially. This why I am driven to help my Ss before, during or after school. I want my Ss to ❤️ coming every day. I did not have that. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A2 I need a teacher who believed in me enough to offer me hope when things didn’t go as planned but when I made the bad decision. I need a teacher who refuse to label mean has a bad kid because those labels enter a classroom before a Student does. #EduGladiators
A2) I needed teachers that understood my skills were uneven. We moved a lot until 4th grade - 4 schools K-4th. I wasn’t refusing - I didn’t know. 4th grade was built exactly how I learned. Gained so much confidence that year. #edugladiators
A1: Mr. Petrin, my seventh grade math teacher, is someone I will always remember and cherish. As an admin., I was blessed to have Dr. Ostwald as my principal for my first 2 years of teaching. Both have passed away but will always be in my heart. #edugladiators
A2 I needed an educator that recognized my strengths and weaknesses and gave me specific direction, honest feedback and encouragement. That’s what I try to be to kids and adults in my corner of the world.#EduGladiators
A2: I have always enjoyed teachers that were amazing story tellers. The art of storytelling has always been the best way for me to learn. It is something that I am still practicing with my students. #EduGladiators
A2: growing up as an Air Force Brat, we moved A LOT . The best Ts we had in military schools were always welcoming to new Ss and their flexibility and warmth made new Ss feel safe. I hope I reflect that in my teaching. #EduGladiators
A2 When I was a S, I was introverted. I needed that educator who understood that and would appreciate me for who I was. As an administrator I work with Ts and Ps to recognize the strengths of our introverted students & help them to shine in their own way. #EduGladiators
I always told my students that at the end of your high school career you are going to look back over every educator you had and begin to shift them around and determine the impact they had in your life.
I told them my goal was to be in the top three!!! #EduGladiators
A2 I needed someone who would hold me accountable but let me explore, care for me even when I made choices that they didn't agree with. Someone who treated me like a person not a cog. #edugladiators
A2 I need an educator who loved their job and kids. In elementary school I can only think of 2 teachers who portrayed that. I needed a teacher who was passionate about learning and a whole lot less paperwork 😒 Kill and Drill comes to mind #Edugladiators
A1: Cindi Timmons, debate teacher. She is the strong female role model I want all my students to have with unwavering true north. She saw the leader in me and empowered me to take charge, had incredibly high standards, & required deep independent thought #EduGladiators#BeTheONE
#EduGladiators A2 I needed an educator if you could see past all of the turmoil in my life at that time and recognize that there was a person who needed consistency, encouragement and a lot of love. I hope that is the legacy I have had as a teacher.
A2: I needed a teacher who was patient and chill. I'm not into the dramatic teaching style. Someone who understood how sensitive I was and how my feelings got hurt easily when I was little. And I am that person for my kids today; always empathizing.
#EduGladiators
A2: Great question! I needed someone who was clever, quirky and perceptive. Ioved it when you could tell they were there because they loved it! #edugladiators
A2: I needed an educator to understand children don’t always fit the mold. She taught me how to find a child’s gifts while helping them grow their deficits! #EduGladiators
Knowing kids by name is so impactful! Something I'm still working on but getting there- Trying to learn names and stories! Lots of kids in my school :) #EduGladiators
Ditto! I always say, “he saw me finishing the race in first place before I even knew I was in a race.” Great testimony to the work educators accomplish everyday! #EDUgladiators
I needed an educator that saw my potential and would be relentless in challenging me to defy the stereotypes that would confront me later in life. I was fortunate to have them. #EduGladiators
A2: I was a troubled teenager, military kid, always travelling every 2 years, had a hard time making connections. Any teacher that took time to look underneath the hardshell was enough to make me feel I was worth it. #EduGladiators

Hi Kim. I lost my first principal earlier this week from when I entered teaching. He had such a powerful impact on how I have lead others in the past 19+ years. #EduGladiators
A3: I advocate for my students for fighting for curriculum changes, get involved in before/after school programs, and sponsoring so that I can ensure that my students are getting what THEY deserve. And they deserve the world. I ensure I do my best to get for them #EduGladiators
As a student, I needed an educator that would allow be to be creative in how I could demonstrate that I understood the content. I encourage that individual thought process in the Ss I serve today. #EduGladiators@sheehyrw

#EduGladiators A3 be all in! Help them to navigate the really tough patch is in their life by offering support, resources and assistance when necessary.
A3: By actively listening, checking in frequently and looking beyond just the traditional measures that we analyze for student achievement. #EduGladiators
A2 I had a lot of issues due to childhood trauma. I needed to know teachers respected and valued me, or I was a lost cause. I try to always give a student my respect, and help them reason through issues that get them down. #edugladiators
A3. I advocate for kids in anyway that I can. From talking/training/interacting with educators, every child deserves an advocate. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A3 I work with students who have learning differences in a smaller group setting. I often have a lot of ways to differentiate or make the curriculum accessible to these students. I share my tips and tricks with other staff that teach these students #Edugladiators
#EduGladiators The @GosnellMovie , ok stop what is the 1st thing that you just thought about? Why? Do you truely believe you are setting your students up for success by ignoring this subject? I know it’s hard and you won’t see immediate results but there is much at stake.
A3: I am their voice and their fighter, when they are not receiving supports crucial to their success! I will NEVER back down when I know a student is struggling & we have supports to help! #EDUgladiators
A2 I needed an educator that recognized my strengths and weaknesses and gave me specific direction, honest feedback and encouragement. That’s what I try to be to kids and adults in my corner of the world.#EduGladiators
A3. As an administrator I’m rarely in my office. Visible around the halls and classrooms connecting with learning and students ongoing. Full listening on display when student and/or parent conversations occur to truly do invest in all students to full capacity. #EduGladiators
A3 One of our most important responsibilities we have as leaders is to be the voice for our Ss. To do this, we must know them, see their needs, vocalize the desire to receive resources to meet those needs, and champion our Ss successes when they achieve #edugladiators
A3 I am always trying to dig deeper. I go to their extra curricular activities, check in with them first thing, and throughout the day. I treat them like they were my own. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A3: As a coach, who isn’t always in the classroom but sees a lot more of the landscape, I talk to teachers and admin about things we can tweak, help give a kiddo a walking break, or just sit and listen! #EduGladiators
A3. You must know kids (their interests and challenges) so you can work with staff and families to make the decisions to help the person. #EduGladiators
A4 I spend as much time as possible talking to students individually to learn about them and things they are facing. From there I do what I can like most educators... lending an ear, buying extra supplies to provide for students in need, etc. #edugladiators

A3 Know them. What are their favorites? What are their buttons? What are their activities? Music, movies, food, seasons, books.... Who are they? Know them. #edugladiators
A3) For many young adults simply using “we” starts the process. They aren’t alone! Then lots of practice having those difficult conversations. We take turns being one or the other. Learning how to agree to disagree supports them throughout life. #edugladiators
A2: I needed teacher who truly saw me. I was a complex kid & a teacher pleaser. I did most of what they all asked with a smile & thoughtful questioning. I am more than my ability to complete tasks & I work daily to try and dig a little deeper with my kids #EduGladiators#BeTheONE
A3: One way that I advocate for my students is with my district. It is rare that the decision makers there get to hear student voices, so I put myself out there for them. Sometimes it’s not popular, but someone’s got to do it. #EduGladiators
A2: I needed an educator who was empathetic, compassionate and loving, but who also challenged me to be the best I could/can be...many lessons learned from those experiences and much I have adopted into my own practices. #EduGladiators
Absolutely! Important to know their name, how to pronounce it correctly, and their story. And then follow through with checking in with them periodically with real conversation rather than small talk #EduGladiators
A3: I remind them I acceptthem as the person they are, that they impact my life as much as I impact theirs, that they matter! It’s so hard when home lives are hard but if you can be the shining light it actually makes change #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A3: Being an advocate for our Ss is the most important role we play. We need to be their voice not only when it's easy to celebrate their accomplishments. But when it's hard, in the lounge when others are complaining about "that kid". We must shine the light.
A3 One of our most important responsibilities we have as leaders is to be the voice for our Ss. To do this, we must know them, see their needs, vocalize the desire to receive resources to meet those needs, and champion our Ss successes when they achieve #edugladiators
A3: I advocate hard for my students. On occasion perhaps jeopardizing relationships with co-workers but they can advocate for themselves so I am not too worried about that. We have to remember kids have no power at school or at least feel that way. #EduGladiators
A3: I listen to them. I take time to hear their story. I notice when things are askew. I ask follow up questions at appropriate times. Much like Coach Howatt, I call them to a higher standard when they fall, and celebrate their victories with them when they win. #EduGladiators
A3 In our school, greeting every child by name is a priority as it lets them know they are recognized. I tell them over and over, school is their safe haven. Constant contact w/ their parents and keeping the lines of communication open is key. #EduGladiators
A1: My HS English and journalism teacher @MrsFaraWiles impacted my life as a student and future educator that can never be repayed. She taught me how to provide support, listen, and encourage and make others believe in themselves. #EDUgladiators#BeTheOne
Q1. Educators have so much power in a child's life. Who was that teacher or educator that made an impact in your life? How has that impacted your career and outlook on life? #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A3: Students need to know they have someone in their corner. We can all have a voice but have to be willing to speak up when injustice takes place. As leaders in our classrooms, school buildings, or districts, we have the opportunity to make change. #EduGladiators
A3 I have amazing Ts who know their Ss so well. I try to listen to their concerns and get them the resources that they need. I also encourage Ts to help Ss advocate for themselves so that they have a skill that will carry them through life #EduGladiators
A3: The first step in advocating for kids is getting to know them on a deeper-than-surface level. I often seek out the kids who other people find the most trying. I have a whole crew of littles who I check in with on a very regular basis.
#EduGladiators
A3: By knowing curriculum is not the only tool they need to succeed. Social skills, character, behaviour, how to deal with their own feelings, how to deal with failure and pain, how to care for others, the golden rule, all things as important as curriculum #EduGladiators

Hi #EduGladiators...Melissa jumping in late from NM! A1: My BEST & FAV Ts were excited about teaching, made it fun, & made it relevant! If I could not see the why w/impacts I was not engaged!
A3 I’m the coordinator for MENT2BE. Teachers, our principal and even other students refer kids to us who struggle emotionally and we match them with an adult who spend a minimum of 45 min a wk with them during the school day..#EduGladiators
As a student, I needed an educator that would allow me to be creative in how I demonstrated what I was learning. I encourage this individual thought process in the Ss I serve today. #EduGladiators@sheehyrw

This is what so many of our brightest, often underachieving, Ss are looking for! Make learning relevant and meaningful. Let their products be products that have potential to solve real world problems!! #champforkids#Edugladiators

A3: Just yesterday, I pulled a MS student that I no longer work with & had her work w/me while her classmates were on a field trip. I wanted to find out why she wasn’t on the trip & reconnect with her. She hugged me at the end of day. 🌟❤️🌟#EduGladiators
A4. 1. I would look at revising how we structure our days, 2. I would look at how we teaching our teacher education programs, 3. Ensure that every child feels loved and valued. #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
A3: Advocating for students (and Ts) is important in a leadership role. One way I advocate for Ss is to try to teach them how to properly advocate for themselves. #edugladiators
A3: When I talk to students, I listen beyond the words and give them 100% of my attention. I show genuine concern and help them frame their question or concern so they can communicate it to others. #edugladiators
That's amazing! My goal was to know all of our 4th/5th/6th graders by now- almost there! But I've learned the name of a lot of other kids. I need to get on this! #EduGladiators
A2: I needed a teacher that helped me come out of my shell and gain the confidence needed to overcome obstacles & chalenges and learn that failure was not the end but an opportunity to try again. #Edugladiators#BeTheOne
#A3: As a school leader, it’s so important to be a good listener! When you truly listen to Ss, you can determine their needs and offer support and encouragement. #KidsDeserveIt#edugladiators
A3 We have a Caring Adult Program in our school. If we have a special relationship with a student who experiences difficulty managing we are their go to person #Edugladiators
A3: The first step in advocating for kids is getting to know them on a deeper-than-surface level. I often seek out the kids who other people find the most trying. I have a whole crew of littles who I check in with on a very regular basis.
#EduGladiators
A3) I try my best to be a model to my students. I need them to have perseverance. Honestly, I make it a point to teach life skills not just content. #EduGladiators
A4: Testing, testing, and more testing! Ts have lost their spark due to these scores being indicative of who they are as professionals. Let’s measure growth, let’s allow Ts to determine what’s best for Ss, and allow EDUCATORS to make decisions about EDUCATION! #EduGladiators
A3 I am a constant advocate for Ss. Most importantly, I include them and help them advocate for themselves. Systems do not always react in a timely manner to needed change. Ss need to persist, gather their evidence, & get their voices heard. #edugladiators
A3: I advocate for my students by trying very hard to build honest, trusting, loving relationships with them. For some, the classroom is the place where they feel safest and where they know they are loved...no matter what! #EduGladiators
@megan_hacholski and I can relate, Brent. All some of these students need is a first follower to find success and gain momentum. We are willing to risk it all to be there to support them through the ups and downs of their journey. #EduGladiators
A3: Students need to know they have someone in their corner. We can all have a voice but have to be willing to speak up when injustice takes place. As leaders in our classrooms, school buildings, or districts, we have the opportunity to make change. #EduGladiators
A4. 1. Full funding for public education in all states. 2. Full, authentic and ongoing support for public education nationwide. 3. Emphesis on investing in the whole child/relationships coming before test scores. #EduGladiators
Be #relentless in our effort to help children see that they are so much more than stereotypes, statistics, or any other superficial label/category they have been sorted into! ALL children have potential! Glad you had Ts in your corner of the ring! #champforkids#Edugladiators
A3: I stand up and become a voice for those that may feel voiceless, I step up when others take a step back or decide to sit down. I take the time to listen and build relationships and help them achieve their goals. #EDUgladiators#BeTheOne
A4: only three 🧐 standardized test cuz no child is standard, more hands on activities and less book work, teaching social values and morals...we are creating the future of our world and some people skills are lacking as data is in the for front #EduGladiators
A4: Changes to Education
1) All study would be interdisciplinary
2) Students would be able to pursue passion projects
3) Growth NOT Grades
4) The Food - homegrown (by students) and freshly prepared #EduGladiators
a4.
- integration & generalization (as opposed to isolation, specialization)
- concept-, principle- or strategy-based (as opposed to skills, techniques)
- link Why with How
#EduGladiators#thinkLE
A2: I inherited the best from the best...patience always, never stop learning yourself, don't be afraid to be silly w/kids, laugh a lot, smile, make sure your content is engaging/relevant & if it isn't don't be afraid to differentiate it & change/tweak it to be so! #EduGladiators
I advocate for my kids ... more importantly, they know I advocate for them. How do I know? They come to me to ask to advocate ... can you ___ for us? #EduGladiators
A4 Three things? Well, less bureaucracy, more equity, and less fear of change... That's a start! If we all focused on student needs and did not make excuses as to why they cannot be met, it would be so much better! #Edugladiators
A4: I would like kids need to know more languages, understand how to think and solve problems with empathy and learn how to effectively challenge the system and persuade others. #edugladiators
A4: I would change... "traditional" instructional practices, the number of standards, and allow students to choose where they want to go to school *gasp* The reason I choose these things is because I think they would encourage us to up our game as educators. #edugladiators
A4: The focus on test scores, kids are more than just one data point, the inequality in funding for our students and schools, & the lack of resources for Ss experiencing trauma are all things I’d want to fix in schools today. #EduGladiators
A4: Truly so many to choose from:
1) how we measure student achievement and progress.
2) the attention given to professional development as organizational units.
3) how students reflect upon their own growth/development as they rise through K-12.
#EduGladiators
A4. 1. Full funding for public education in all states. 2. Full, authentic and ongoing support for public education nationwide. 3. Emphasis on investing in the whole child/relationships coming before test scores. #EduGladiators
A3: It is about listening, listening between what is spoken, & checking in regularly. Building that reputation as someone who will listen is key. The next is to tap into your resources like teachers, parents, & support folks. Action & follow up important #EduGladiators#BeTheONE
A4: How we assess understanding of concepts taught. There are other methods than a test or an essay because not everyone is a paper and pencil type person. We are diverse people with incredible skillsets that usually lie dormant throughout our school careers. #EduGladiators
A4: 1) Spending more time connecting and creating relationships with Ss; 2) Spending more time teaching behaviour; 3) Understanding how each Student learns. #EduGladiators

A3: Ss that struggle behaviorally need to be listened to and asked to be part of the solution. This is hard to do when you are frustrated as a T but it’s worth it for them! #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A4: 1. Eliminate Homework 2. Remove Desks 3. Create a system of learning that supports the progress of all students promoting them across grade levels by skills and not age.
A4: 1) Teacher preparation opportunities in college 2) The amount and format of assessments administered 3) That EVERY single student would feel like they have a cheerleader in their corner #EDUgladiators#BeTheOne
Many teachers think they advocate for students, but are they really? Are they advocating for something the kids really want or is just something the teacher thinks the kids want? #EduGladiators
A4: I would change...
1. Finances - Schools and teachers need more funds resources
2. Standardized Tests
3. Kick the politics out of educations #EduGladiators#BeTheOne
@sheehyrw thank you 🙏🏾for moderating #EduGladiators this morning. More importantly, thank you for reminding everyone why we need to #BeTheOne for kids!!!
My challenge is that I'm new to the school. I feel the urgency but I'm not so good with names and it's a large school! Just learning T names was a challenge :) #EduGladiators

A4: Less focus on mandates & testing & more on individual needs; focus on growth & not grades to demonstrate learning, and overall funding for education. #EduGladiators
A4 I’m excited to say I’m watched my wishes come true. As a parent, I love personalized learning that fills in the gaps, an education that’s relevant and gets my 15 yr old excited. #Ignite#EduGladiators
A4: My ed wishlist:
1) Remove all the pressure that kids are under and reconsider grading.
2) Bulk up non-college options in school, but make the programs equitable and attractive, not a way to get rid of difficult kids.
3) Work on ways to desegregate schools.
#EduGladiators
The thing that stuck out to me about your answer: the word FULL. It should go unsaid that education needs to be a priority, that is ENTIRELY handled. Often times, we see something started without any follow up. #EDUgladiators
A4. 1. Full funding for public education in all states. 2. Full, authentic and ongoing support for public education nationwide. 3. Emphasis on investing in the whole child/relationships coming before test scores. #EduGladiators
A3: #EduGladiators I believe the best way to do the most good is to equip their parents/families w/ info & tools to help them advocate for Ss. Strong partnerships are built when we all assume the best intentions and intentionally work together. #KidsDeserveIt
A4 -Providing services for the Ss and families w/in the school community like mental health, dentists/doctors -more funds to try new ideas- books books and more books 📚 #EduGladiators
A4 Assessment - listening to Ts grapple w "getting something into the gradebook" kills me! We must find and use authentic ways to assess S learning! #EduGladiators
A4: The three things I would want in education if I were in in a position to make it happen-required,free & fantastic pre-school for every child in America, less emphasis on the test score and more emphasis on S growth, & fully funded PD on any subject for every T! #edugladiators
A4: If I could change any 3 things in EDU, it would be:
*Scheduling (why be limited by grade level, time, and space?)
*How we train Ts (an apprenticeship for longer than a few weeks / mentorship that is hands on)
*Trained School Based Therapist & funding
#EduGladiators
A4: overhaul the system curriculum in silos. 21st century professionals do not use math or English etc in isolation. As much as we teach collaboration, technology, interdisciplinary the system itself of x # of credits in xsubject keeps kids thinking it is separate #EduGladiators
A3: When I talk to students, I listen beyond the words and give them 100% of my attention. I show genuine concern and help them frame their question or concern so they can communicate it to others. #edugladiators
A4: 3 things that need to change in education- 1. Make the arts accessible and treated just like core classes 2. Testing should not be the focus of learning 3. Let teachers buy what they need all the time - budgets should be fluid and limitless. What a dream! #EduGladiators
A5: Wow where to start...bring more balance btwn 21st skills & traditional skills, free college & post HS schooling for all, focus more on the socio/emotional needs of todays kids - their brains are being wired different! #edugladiators
A3 I’m the coordinator for MENT2BE. Teachers, our principal and even other students refer kids to us who struggle emotionally and we match them with an adult who spend a minimum of 45 min a wk with them during the school day..#EduGladiators
Thanks @sheehyrw for an awesome start to the day! Hope to see the #EduGladiators crew on Tues 8 est as @PreK33 leads the #champforkids family into the ring to chat about trauma informed/ trauma responsive practices! ❤️❤️🥊❤️❤️ #BeTheOne
