Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Good evening everyone #udlchat I’m Ron Rogers from Ohio. If a movie was made about my life it would probably be a young Clint Eastwood who would play me.
Hi! Christine from MA. In a movie of my life I would want Claire Danes to play me...mostly just because I wished I was Angela Chase from @MSCLquotes 🎥 #udlchat
Hiya #UDLchat! I'm Mindy from Boston, USA. My lifetime biography movie would star @melissamccarthy because I'd want people to think I'm that funny and smart.
Q1: In #DiveintoUDL we provide multiple pathways through the book. When it comes to UDL, what is one area where you are still at the Wade In stage? How about the Shallow Swim or Deep Dive? #UDLChat

a1) @eyeonaxs coming hard out the gate! Wade in… I would say most of “#UDL” Shallow swim: Engagement principles & Deep Dive: I would say Iterative Design, Variability, and reflective practice… but the current is a monster in that deep end! #udlchat
A1: I've been in the #UDL world for a long time, and whenever I'm around my #UDLfam I always feel like I'm in the shallow end. But that's a good place to be. More to learn! #UDLchat
A1: I might always feel like I'm still wading when it comes to neuroscience and the complexities of student learning. But, when I reflect on where I was 5-10 years ago, I know I've done some deep water swimming too! #udlchat
Q2: Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take a critical look at our assumptions and beliefs about learning (like cleaning out our closets). What are some assumptions you would like to see teachers Toss? Keep? Repair? #UDLChat
A1: wading in getting colleagues to drink the UDL Juice. Deep Diving in my commitment to learning more about it and continuing to teach others #udlchat
#UDLchat a1: great q! I feel like at different stages of my career I've taken dips, dove in, and am at the point where I'm surfing the waves to learn & enhance my understanding across the guidelines rather than just wading in the waters
A1: wading into guiding goal setting and self-regulation, swimming in effort and persistence, diving in to options in expression and communication #udlchat
If I am really being honest, I am in the Shallow Swim stage when I hold others accountable for consistently applying UDL, mostly b/c as an administrator there are so many competing demands for my time. I deep dive when I get more time with teachers to reflect. #udlchat
Q2: Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take a critical look at our assumptions and beliefs about learning (like cleaning out our closets). What are some assumptions you would like to see teachers Toss? Keep? Repair? #UDLChat
A2 oh man that’s easy -
Toss - disabling language. keep - searching for engagement. Add - empathy for every human that walks through the door! #UDLchat
A2: Assumption to toss: Not everyone wants to learn. Assumption to keep: Everyone can learn. Assumption to repair: Everyone has to learn in the same way at the same pace. #UDLchat
A2) Toss: Rigor=Regiment, Ss will invest in learning because we tell them to, the reason for variability is solely based on 3 "learning styles” culture is dictated by authority… and so many others #udlchat
Q2: Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take a critical look at our assumptions and beliefs about learning (like cleaning out our closets). What are some assumptions you would like to see teachers Toss? Keep? Repair? #UDLChat
A2: That’s a loaded question! I feel a close, hard look at ones biases helps to “clean out the closet” regarding our beliefs about learning. That’s a good place to start. #UDLChat
Q2: Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take a critical look at our assumptions and beliefs about learning (like cleaning out our closets). What are some assumptions you would like to see teachers Toss? Keep? Repair? #UDLChat
A2: Toss the idea that how you were taught and how you learned is the best way to teach others step outside of what you are comfortable with
Keep the idea that connecting with students helps them learn it always has and always will #udlchat
A2: Toss-Thinking that UDL is a checklist Keep-Focus on building relationships Repair-Options so that they truly empower students and let them shine #udlchat
A2.5) Repair: Knowledge is the only currency that matters in Ed, Ss should have full autonomy OR Ss can’t handle autonomy, Ss should have input on their goals, Instructional Design is the same as lesson planning… #udlchat
#UDLChat a2: we always need to keep ourselves in check with making assumptions about how Ls learn best... Needs to be an active process to understand & individualize expert learning
A2: Drop the assumption that kids have only have 1 way to show what they know... or there’s only 1 way for students to receive the information #udlchat
A3 we work hard to model udl in all PD. It has started to transform though how we even think about Professional learning. All teachers should get choice in what they want to learn and how they get to their goals. Teachers pick PD! #udlchat
A3: Using a tool like https://t.co/0E5OlcP16p is a great way to provide additional opportunities for participation even in large groups where those who are shy tend to get lost. #udlchat
A3: The best way to infuse #UDL into professional learning is to remember that we're ALL learners, even as adults. Even as educators. Every. Single. One of us. #UDLchat
A3 we always have supplies and supports accessible whether they are used or not, have teachers self assess whether their objectives were met. Make all learning relevant to the learners. #udlchat
A2: I don’t see disability - I have actually heard this from several UDL practitioners. When you say that next to me, you’re basically saying I don’t exist. Focus on removing barriers, give people like me right to my identity - that’s being inclusive. #UDLChat
A2: Repair...from teacher to student directed. Teachers need to do more "submerging" so children can "emerge" and shape direction of their learning #udlchat

Q4: The new UDL guidelines are divided into three layers (Access, Build and Internalize). What are some resources for helping educators ensure all three layers are incorporated into UDL-infused instructional designs?
#UDLChat a3: just because learners are older, doesn't mean you should just talk at them (secondary & higher Ed too)... Challenge them, make pd interactive, meaningful, and informative! #UDL the heck out of it!
For the access layer, the @AEM_Center recently created Designing for Accessibility with POUR with tips and resources for making the materials in UDL lessons more accessible. #UDLChathttps://t.co/2tdBPxZylT
A3: Teach about UDL by...(wait for it)...using UDL! Then, tell them that they just got UDL'd, and show them all the ways you built UDL into your PD about UDL! #udlchat
But I think we also need space to have that sit and get or digest within learning. Part of learning is reflection & constant collaboration doesn’t fit everyone. #udl is paradox, there is room for both. Maybe we need to reflect on design bias in PL too #udlchat
#UDLChat q4: be mindful, reflect, and engage in expert teaching and learning! ;-) model expert learning & get curious about process oriented approaches to learning!
Q4: The new UDL guidelines are divided into three layers (Access, Build and Internalize). What are some resources for helping educators ensure all three layers are incorporated into UDL-infused instructional designs? #UDLChat
A4: For the internalize layer, this classic video from CAST and @DavidRose_CAST focuses on the verticality of the guidelines and the goal of moving from the extrinsic to the intrinsic. https://t.co/TXO5Kao6cu#UDLChat
A4: At my district we really emphasize the Qualities of an Expert Learner outlined by @CAST_UDL as the goal of UDL. It's amazing to see students K-12 internalize those qualities, claim them, and use them in their learning. #udlchat
I LOVE sit and get as an adult learner. It’s about options, right? Me: You want me to make WHAT out of spaghetti sticks? Also me: Let’s make them do the spaghetti sticks thing! 😂 #UDLchat
A4: Access level- make it a scientific experiment. 1. Collect data 2. Incorporate access level UDL into lesson plans 3.Collect more data (with UDL) 4. Compare #udlchat
A4) We need to also remember pertinent pieces of andragogy. What are folks building? what are the deliverables? How are we shepherding from crisis to sustainability? #udlchat

Agreed. I don't mind some sit and get. The problem is that for too many of our Ss (especially in MS, HS and college), sit and get is ALL they get. Sit and get is one tool in our toolkit, but it can't be the only tool. I mean, try hammering a nail with a screwdriver! #udlchat
Learning is part of life. Without making mistakes there’s no room for growth. You need to take big steps forward to create progress in order to make the most out of your set goals #udlchat
I would challenge some of that I think we spend a lot of time with initial points of engagement (the hook) & believe that's enough to sustain effort & deep engagement. It simply isn't. I worry that , as with much of Ed, we are reactionary and say "Everyone Collaborate!" #udlchat

Okay everyone here is the #UDLchat history for tonight just in case you missed it. https://t.co/3qHQr0MTLp@min_d_j you can make this sound much better. A migraine has me whipped tonight.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of collaboration. I'd much rather work alone, but often, in PDs or conference sessions, we are asked to collaborate. No matter what "one way" we teach, it's never going to be "best way" for everybody. The point is, we need options. #udlchat
Learning takes time just like creating a meal. You must use balance and poise but at the same initiate success as the main ingredient. These crucial components will impact many in a positive way. #udlchat
Once you set aside the most significant ones and commit yourself to the best of your ability, you will rise to become a champion that your destined to 🐝 #udlchat
