#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Welcome to #leadupchat! Our theme today is "Hope is Not a Wish." Please introduce yourself and get ready to build some efficacy around the concept of HOPE.
Hey y’all! Latoya, checking in from chilly SC. It was 36 degrees when I woke up this morning but I’ve consumed several cups of ☕️ to keep me warm. Excited to learn with all of you! #leadupchat
Morning, Heidi! Thankful you are here, helping LEAD UP! Heidi is a nationally recognized teacher, PAEMST winner and teaches at #UVlearn! Give her a follow! You'll be a better teacher for it! #leadupchat
Morning. Craig asst supt & staff developer from Ozark, MO where we missed a whole lot of snow but instead got rain & now some ice. Slightly disappointed. ⛄️ ❄️ #leadupchat

Great point @brewerhm Intentional visibility is a critical characteristic of successful school leaders. Each day reflect on the question: Where did I spend my time today? What does the answer to that Q say about my priorities? #EdChat#LeadLAP#leadupchat@ASCD@NASSP@NAESP
A1. For context, the concept of hope as expectation is ancient. A Hellenistic Greek thought, from the word ELPIZO: to look forward with confidence to that which is good and beneficial—‘to hope, to hope for, hope. #leadupchat
Wishing is passive. We are waiting for something to happen to/for us.
Hope is ACTIVE. We have a dream of what this COULD BE and we are WORKING TOWARD that.
#leadupchat.
A1. A wish has a level of uncertainty within it. It lacks belief. A hope is a commitment and belief that the best is yet to come, that things WILL be better. #leadupchat
A1. Wishes come and go quickly. Much like blowing out the candles on a birthday cake - you make a wish and before the first slice is eaten your wish has faded from your memory. #LeadUpChat
A1: A wish lacks action or accountability. It puts your desires in the control of others. Hope states your desires but puts yourself in charge of the outcome. #leadupchat
A1 Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure when we wish for things we can't have. If we can't make it happen then we may be expending energy on things we cannot control. #leadupchat
A1: The word wish or concept of wish indicates that whatever you wish for is just up to chance or destiny. It doesn't indicate or need action from the wisher! #leadupchat
A1: Hope indicates you have a vision that you will make a reality—you will take action to make it happen. Wish could be interpreted as waiting around for someone else to make it happen. #leadupchat
A1 A wish points to luck. It’s iffy at best. It’s based on desire on its own. And if it relies on luck there isn’t anything you can do (or rest in) through the process. #leadupchat
A1 Those who possess hope are more readily able to act upon this hope to bring the thing, the idea, the vision they have to fruition. Those who use the word wish are arbitrarily thinking something may or may not happen #leadupchat
A1: YES! Lacking belief and a degree of uncertainty....traps we must avoid if we are going to spark change. Sniff this out when working with teams and see how you can add confidence and certainty to the "hope." #leadupchat
A1. A wish has a level of uncertainty within it. It lacks belief. A hope is a commitment and belief that the best is yet to come, that things WILL be better. #leadupchat
A1: For some reason, I think of the Princess and the Frog...wishing is putting it in someone else’s hands to happen...”that ol’ star willl only take you part of the way...you need to pair it with some hard work of your own!” #leadupchat
A1 - hope & wish in terms of ed are not synonymous in my opinion. When we provide hope for S’s it means we are teaching where all S’s see the glimmer & have the visions of success now & for the future. Wish is too haphazard. Have to be purposeful when T’ing for hope. #leadupchat
A1: A wish seems unattainable and like something that will happen by chance. When you hope something will work, you are more committed because planning and effort went into it! #leadupchat
A1 A wish is wanting something usually impossible and hope to me is something you want and can see in the future as long a you use it as a verb. #leadupchat
A1: A wish can imply that you have no ability or power to manifest its actualization! The downside to that is an external locus of control that can be paralyzing..... #leadupchat
A1. Saying I hope I lose weight while eating a donut, versus I hope I lose wight while on the treadmill... to quote the Princess Bride... I don't think that word means what you think it means. #leadupchat
A1. Hope-a belief that your behavior can change an outcome and that you have some measure of control outcomes via your actions
Wish-a belief that there is nothing you can do to change an outcome: a dependence on luck
#leadupchat
A1: When it comes to supporting students, districts need a plan. We can hope for more 3rd graders reading at grade level, but hope is not a strategy. #leadupchat
A1: the biggest disadvantage is if your hope/wish, supported by ‘action’, would have been a powerful experience of learning for those you lead. #leadupchat
#leadupchat I think that wishes are so easily dismissed. We put so much emphasis on this or that, but when we hope by nature we ground in reality. We look at what is possible and then see futures that are attainable.
A1. Here is a cute blog post written on this topic. It even provides you with the opportunity to see if you understand the difference. https://t.co/ymyUgQT2k2#LeadUpChat
A1 A wish points to luck. It’s iffy at best. It’s based on desire on its own. And if it relies on luck there isn’t anything you can do (or rest in) through the process. #leadupchat
True, but it's a matter of focus and intentionality. True hope breeds an atmosphere for change and compels to movement. A wish is never birthed into reality unless someone else does it. #leadupchat
The manifesting its actualization is strong, Rayshell. Requires a continuous effort from the one who hopes to make these desires come true @Tech_Buddha#leadupchat
External Locus of Control....another important connection. Be the "house" and shift the odds in your favor through commitment and action. The "take" is ours when we take control. #leadupchat
A1: A wish can imply that you have no ability or power to manifest its actualization! The downside to that is an external locus of control that can be paralyzing..... #leadupchat
I think hope is fueled by goal setting, but it is distinct from wishing in the arena of action. The difference between potential and kinetic energy. #leadupchat
A1. A wish is something you might not have the steps to make happen. Hope might be your #oneword. If it is, you will have steps to live up to it. 😊 #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A1. Hope has been the bedrock of many monumental changes: Martin Luther King: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
President Obama: “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something.”
Hope is the precursor to change.
#leadupchat
Now this is great thinking! Being mindful of our time and energy is essential to good #leadership. Consider what is within our control. Consider the impact. Consider the feasibility. Act on those things that yield the greatest impact. #ChaseImpact#leadupchat
A1 Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure when we wish for things we can't have. If we can't make it happen then we may be expending energy on things we cannot control. #leadupchat
A1 - yes Steven I concur that we have to have actionable steps, but those steps have to be purposefully used & w/ the right intention to create & see a vision the St can attain. Giving hope is a motivational strategy integrated throughout an action plan. #leadupchat
I wonder about the timing of hope; is it hope to believe it will happen in your lifetime as opposed to the hope it will happen for our grandchildren’s grandchildren? #leadupchat
Carrie Horn. First grade teacher. Graber Elementary. Love this theme. I will be lurking in the shadows as I cannot keep up with chats very well. #leadupchat
Welcome to #leadupchat! Our theme today is "Hope is Not a Wish." Please introduce yourself and get ready to build some efficacy around the concept of HOPE.
A1: Disadvantages of hope merely being a wish encompass the idea of waiting. If we hope for something we have to persevere to make it happen. #LeadUpChat
These are key thoughts, Andy. Breeding an atmosphere for positive change is a responsibility that leaders must assume and work with their teams to achieve @andyaddis#leadupchat
I think hope, real hope, isn’t about timing, but about a commitment to believe the best is yet to come, that greater is in the future. It’s more about the belief that it will happen rather than when it happens...IMO #leadupchat
A2 Right now I am working to get my focus back on my passion for education. My #OneWord2019 is Renew for that reason. It is time to refocus on my whys in order to move forward to a successful future. #leadupchat
A2: those are the action steps. For any hope I have, I like to break it down into simple, small steps I can take each day. Then, making my hopes a reality depend on me just being consistent and doing those little things right! #leadupchat
A2: I would say the usual ingredients.... clearly defined success criteria, an action plan that can be adapted based on need, consistency over time discipline, and A LOT OF CELEBRATION!! #leadupchat
A2 I must be present - cognitively grappling with what shifts need to be made right now. And do those things! But also important - do what I know to do and then rest, be still, see what needs my attention and then watch what happens next! #leadupchat
A2 My hope is to have a positive impact on students and on teachers. My focus is on developing steps to create lessons and professional development that is engaging and motivating to everyone. #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A1: Hope is an emotion and we do all we can within our power to make the action a reality. Often a wish is something that we lack the power to overcome a negative situation. #leadupchat
Hello #leadupchat family! Just returned from the gym and am looking forward to jumping in even if a bit late. Elisabeth here from NY! Great to be here!
A1: A wish can lack action: "I wish I were taller, that's not happening anytime soon." 😏 "I wish I could help, I can if I approach and ask how I can." 👍🏽😊 #leadupchat
A2. If I have the expectation to continue my learning each day by participating in chats and reading stellar professional books then I will be the 'spark' that guides others toward their hopes. #LeadUpChat
A2. I have the expectation to move FORWARD with courage, with love, with dedication, with an open mind and an open heart to fulfill the purpose of my life. #leadupchat
Yes. I agree. My earlier remark was "Even hope can be a curse. Hope can keep you hanging on, when maybe it would be better to turn to action." I also do not equate hope or wish with action. #leadupchat
A2: One of my big expectations is to be intentional...focusing on the steps necessary to attain a big goal...while not getting distracted by shiny objects!
#leadupchat
A2: Some commutable, actionable parts of MY HOPE(S) for the near future: (1) Be more present in PLCs with teachers (2) Listen with empathy but guide with action (3) take a RISK. #leadupchat
A2: Present expectations include maintaining focus and clarity. What are the important things to work on this semester to myself, staff and school forward? Distraction is the devils workshop for me. #leadupchat
A1. Hope inspires. Wishes don’t change our outlook. They may or may not happen and are mostly out of our control. Wishes are not powerful. Hope propels us forward. #leadupchat
A2: build relationships, serve those around me well, maintain the highest of moral standards in decision making, and put our student and adult learners at the front of the decision making process. I hope we have a little fun in the process, too! #leadupchat
A2. If I have the expectation to continue my learning each day by participating in chats and reading stellar professional books then I will be the 'spark' that guides others toward their hopes. #LeadUpChat
A2 I expect to be the best principal I can be for our students and staff because they deserve the best I can give. That "best" may be different on different days too, but it always has to to be my best.
A2. If hope is a responsibility, then my present must be some kind of accountability. Preparation must mark someone with true hope. Every decision, conversation, step in the direction of your hopeful expectation is intentional preparation for outcome. #leadupchat
a2 My district has been piloting math inquiry learning. It's been a hard sell for HS, but I can see it working & that it is within reach. My hope is that we will persevere. #leadupchat
A2: I MUST continue to grow as an instructional leader if my hopes for my team will come to be. I must continue to learn, and be willing to support my team as we seek to grow and change. Definitely actionable things for me in the present. #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A2-My one word this year is Wholeheartedly and I'm confidently moving into my future Wholeheartedly maximizing my every opportunity to grow, mentor and build positive engagements with everything. #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A2: I think you just set me up for sharing my #OneWord2019! 😉 BECOME. From my favorite quote: “We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day.” —Richard G. Scott #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A2) What action one takes now is determined by goals (hopes?) for the future. A successful outcome begins with well planned steps and actions. #leadupchat
This is so very important...our teachers need to be supported, listened to, and encouraged.
It's about making that time with your teams a priority and sticking to it.
#leadupchat
A2: Some commutable, actionable parts of MY HOPE(S) for the near future: (1) Be more present in PLCs with teachers (2) Listen with empathy but guide with action (3) take a RISK. #leadupchat
What's that learning look like/sound like for you? Confident expectations for success are clear. What are yours as a professionally hungry learning leader?
#leadupchat
A2: To be a successful admin, in the future, I must be an excellent follower of our leadership + an effective leader in the classroom. The two go hand-in-hand. #leadupchat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A2: One of my expectations is to reach educators and develop a system of support, belief, and trust that together we can create desired shifts to truly empower learning. It's all about relationships first, reflection, and engaging in intentional PL that also inspires. #leadupchat
A2: Praying is action. What I ask God for has to align with my steps to accomplish the goal. If I do nothing, then, then my goals were not meaningful to me. #leadupchat
Can I just say, as a pastor hanging out with a lineup of teacher/leader/educators... I am doubling checking my tweets before I hit send, hoping I pass. You make me nervous. #leadupchat
A2. I also expect myself to be an inspiration and share positive energy with others, to add value to any space I enter, to lead with a positive disposition all the time-this is a continuous work in progress. #leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
I love that! We need to keep moving forward and success comes in baby steps. We can spend to much time beating ourselves up for missteps, rather than reflecting, regrouping and keep moving forward. #leadupchat
A2) Hoping to turn peer-coaching into reality in my department. Been 2 years, and nothing has worked yet. So, I continue to explore new options, try new things, delve into why it isn't catching on. #leadupchat
A2: Gary from Illinois. As a supporter of Ts in the integration of character I am committed to bringing hope to enhancing or creating a positive school culture with engaged students, quality Ts and inspirational leaders. #leadupchat
I can! Mine is RISK. Financial, personal, professional: I'm mulling several for this next year. I've been cranking on a dissertation for the last year and it's been all-consuming. I'm ready to finish it in May & then take a risk. What? I'm not sure, but I'm ready! #leadupchat
Yes! This is definitely a struggle. I couldn't decide on a #oneword this year. INTENTIONAL just might be it. Keep the focus on doing what's best for kids. #leadupchat
A2: I am purposefully trying to focus on those things I can do with intentionality to help teachers provide hope. I’m in the middle of a 5 part PD regarding how to help reach at risk S’s w/ movement. Each session has a portion on providing hope w/in our teaching. #leadupchat
Yep...what's the amount of evidence required before we leap?
So many factors play here.
It's a fringe.
But the fringe is where creativity exists. #leadupchat#MafostMashup
A2 For me it’s being a great listener and doing what is best for my Ss and Ts. Putting action behind my words and being task and relationship oriented in order to make sure things are running as smooth as possible. #leadupchat
A3 Hills and valleys. Every valley has caused me to refine my practice, relationships, pedagogy. I’m thankful for the refining and growth that happens as I push through the less successful times. #leadupchat
A1: A strong sense of hope in me and in my school community and the expectation I have for myself is to continue to be the thermostat not the barometer. Being consistent in my behavior in how I treat challenges as opportunities, modeling for our staff and students. #LeadUpChat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A3: Tons of hope in a rather new life era. I try define present and long run success as helping others while making decisions that are true to who I am and want to be. Sounds corny, I get it. But when balancing a lot of decisions, comfort in being real. #leadupchat
A3: Hope as a confident expectation shifts your mindset to look for success. Instead of dwelling in setbacks and obstacles, you are more likely to look at the lessons learned and refocus on reaching your goal. More resilience = more likely to realize your hope! #LeadUpChat
A3. Confident expectation allows you to celebrate progress, not just achievement/conclusion. The marathon is won one mile at a time (or so I've been told). #leadupchat
That's awesome, Paul! You're finishing in May?! That will feel amazing. So proud of you! You're an incredible difference maker, can't wait to see what you do!
#leadupchat
A3 Long term goals need hope. If you have hope then you can plan the steps and have short term goals to eventually reach the long term goal. Hope helps us understand the bigger picture. #leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
Can I just say, as a pastor hanging out with a lineup of teacher/leader/educators... I am doubling checking my tweets before I hit send, hoping I pass. You make me nervous. #leadupchat
A2: A strong sense of hope in me and in my school community and the expectation I have for myself is to continue to be the thermostat not the barometer. Being consistent in my behavior in how I treat challenges as opportunities, modeling for our staff and students. #LeadUpChat
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A3 The collective possession of hope enables teams to establish their resolve, dig in, and continue moving forward when obstacles come on the journey to success. Hope encourages the team that the success, the vision they are moving toward, is worth enduring difficulty #leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
Q3 My #oneword this year is SERVICE. I think as we look at hope and the steps as leaders we take to grow our organizations, that faith in teachers, administrators, students, etc. becomes evident and grows. #leadupchat
A3: Any long term success comes from a consistency of effort. Hope can give energy to the perseverance to see the small steps as having a large impact when combined with many steps. #leadupchat
A2: Present expectations for a successful include looking at every experience as an opportunity to learn. I want to become the very best version of me so that I can better serve others. Making others better makes me better. ❤️ #LeadUpChat
A3: HOPE is essential to the marathon run of success. It provides: clarity, focus, inspiration! PLUS it's best when shared...A LOT...with your PLN. Tell others about your HOPE so that they can run alongside you! #bettertogether#leadupchat
A3: It reminds us that every marathon is made up of hard earned miles, and even though the final finish line might seem like a long ways away it’s attainable. Focus on the stages, take action, and hope can become a reality. #leadupchat
Hope can be a desired character trait that defines us and shapes the nature and quality of our personal and social interactions. In that sense hope does drive us to make specific choices #leadupchat
A3: a confident expectation generally leads toward perseverance, maintaining grit, holding on to faith to reach the next set goal. In a spiritual realm, the condiment expectation of eternal life gives us comfort in grief & encouragement to move forward. #leadupchat
A3: I see "hope" as having more to do with the heart...when your heart is involved, you have the purpose and intention to see it through...it sustains you during those rough patches.
#leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
A3: “Success is going from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm.” —Winston Churchill
Hope is what helps us keep going. Hope is also what helps us grow along the way knowing that our growth is required in order to truly meet the expectation. #leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
A3. When hope is a confident expectation we can look forward to the future with an assurance that life is getting better all the time, that the best is yet to come, that our present condition or past history isn’t a limit on our future...we can move FORWARD. #leadupchat
A3: we need to see change as a journey and one that we can influence but not entirely control, being prepared to shift strategies to account for the unexpected. #leadupchat
A3 Tangible is important but those things that are not can be bigger motivators. Those "things" are the hopes that fuel the actions. Rewards for completion so far and a push for what's next. #leadupchat
A3: Success is not immediate. Recognize how far we have come and have hope (confidence) that continued action will bring us one step closer to the goal. #leadupchat
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
A | 3: struggles and bumps will take place in the journey. Hope is a part of the the mindset to keep the class/school/district moving forward. #leadupchat
A3: Without HOPE, we are dead in terms of our staff feeling confident that they are strong instructors & our kids feeling confident that they are endless learners. Like a sports team everybody needs to play their position well and we can all win! #LeadUpChat@Leadupnow#aNewHope
a3 A secondary hope, that which values what happens during the journey, keeps me going even if I never actually get to the original destination. #leadupchat
A3: This @ajjuliani post really helped me to start thinking in segments. It helps me not get too overwhelmed with everything I have to do, but rather focus on what I'll be working on in these next few moments. #leadupchat
H/T @gcouros Wow--Rule number 3 right here is a game changer! It helps me see progress & growth over time, along the journey, before arriving at the completion destination. This helps me lower stress. I'm reading @ajjuliani's: 5 Rules to Simplify Your Life https://t.co/exAuD5wxNb
A3) Hope implies change. it underlies work toward future success. Education is notoriously static. To effect change, even at an evolutionary rate, educators need to believe it is possible. #leadupchat
YES, it does! Educators...well GOOD and GREAT ones...chose the profession because they are teammates, hungry for a collective journey. Solo artists don't work in our field! #peoplebusiness#leadupchat
A3: a confident expectation generally leads toward perseverance, maintaining grit, holding on to faith to reach the next set goal. In a spiritual realm, the confident expectation of eternal life gives us comfort in grief & encouragement to move forward. #leadupchat
A3: Hope is an emotional choice. It's not tangible, it's something I have to decide to have to keep me focused on things bigger than what I can control. #leadupchat
A3 Keeps my focus and I know to just keep on keeping on. With all journeys we have moments of hope and hopelessness, it’s important to be ok with that and know the journey has many aspects. Mountains- little growth Valleys- nourishment and growth #leadupchat
A3: It reminds us that every marathon is made up of hard earned miles, and even though the final finish line might seem like a long ways away it’s attainable. Focus on the stages, take action, and hope can become a reality. #leadupchat
A3: In reflecting on the hope I have in supporting Ts, there are opportunities to celebrate the goal, and then some days I celebrate the journey/ All w/ the expectation of some day being able to celebrate the accomplishment. #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
#LeadUpChat A1: Hi! I’m Katya, a school psychologist from St. Louis MO! Language is so important when it comes to perspective, for this reason I think both “hope” and “wish” are insufficient. I prefer to use the word “goal”.
#leadupchat
A4. Excellent question! Causes me to wonder why some people jump from one wish to another and rarely get to the point of a confident expectation? #LeadUpChat
I’m reflecting on how hope might be impacted by how we experience and navigate the world. If I lived in a world that centered me, I might be more inclined towards hope as opposed to cynicism #leadupchat
A4: Leaders take others on the journey. If you reach the mountaintop alone, you will be alone. The journey provides the team with productive struggle and hope. #leadupchat
A4 I would say to take the plunge. Surrender your wish, and date to hope. Do all you can to support it, monitor and support your hope and then watch what happens!!! #leadupchat
But it seemed good at the time, that's why you did what you did. The question remains, how an we model and inspire in this stage in life...now. #leadupchat
A4. We must focus on “on what we can do, not what has happened to us”. We also must model this for kids and staff as they too face challenges. #leadupchat
A4- ingnite fire and action to achieve the wishes. Change the word, move it to action
Word like goal with a true plan of action. Words change mindsets and we must teach students this! #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
A4: I learned from @alienearbud to be intentional by creating my own vivid vision. It requires a lot of time and reflection but it took my hope to a whole new level. https://t.co/emsjhePR3E#leadupchat
A4 Changing mindset takes determination and lots of hard work. Let others in on the hope and the struggles so they can help. We don't have to do this alone. #leadupchat
A4: I need to think about the next action I need to take to move forward and review and reflect on the effectiveness of that action weekly. #leadupchat
A4: I think that the transition to hope from wish is rooted in two leadership traits specifically. It first requires Real Talk and then it requires Directed action. #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
A4. Discipline is the key here... things we hope for are obviously a desired good. Agree up front it will take work, make a plan (not to finish, but for next steps), and celebrate every move forward. Don't take a journey, take a step. Journeys take care of themselves. #leadupchat
Good point. I hope to be able to speak Spanish some day. However, that requires more than just wishing it to happen or even making it a resolution. There needs to be a choice on my part to use my ability to immerse myself in a cognitive exercise to reach the goal #leadupchat
A2: Present expectations for a successful future include looking at every experience as an opportunity to learn. I want to become the very best version of me so that I can better serve others. Making others better makes me better. ❤️ #LeadUpChat
A4: I can plan my work and work my plan by celebrating small, incremental achievements and building in time for reflection and correcting the course. #leadupchat
A4: Get to it! Find mentors and think partners to build your support system. Don't listen to the negative chatter. It will always be there. Be strong enough to look past it! #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
I wonder about learned behaviors and how folx experience our world/society/country. Based on different experiences, telling people to change their mindset towards more confidence might emotionally impact us in different ways. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A2. This is really difficult for me to decipher. (one reason I love Twitter chats to help me clarify my own goals and learn to stretch myself). My expectation of myself is to remain pliable and teachable and never reach a place where I have it all figured out.
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
Would love to as it has been my focus of late. Always being consistent- you can read the temp🆒 on your home/wall, opposed to me being a thermometer🌡 that goes up and down reacting to others behavior. Controlling my “R” or how I respond.
A4) Important to branch out, meet, talk to, new people. This can disrupt behaviors preventing action. From a combination of new people and already established friends, develop a support network and go for it! #leadupchat
Maybe it’s the shiny new object OR possibly what makes them shift so quickly without them getting to the hope w/ confidence is that they have not set enough short term goals along the way? Small wins on the way to the big gaudy goal. #LeadUpChat
A4. Growing up as a child of poverty, I knew that success was not garaunteed, but I believed that if I gave my very best, life would give that right back to me. Without hope, this kid from the projects wouldn’t be who I am today. Hope changes everything! #truestory#leadupchat
#leadupchat A2: This is a difficult question to answer because it highly depends on the specific “hope” or “goal”. To give a broad answer- do not stop at the first sign of defeat or rejection, self-care, and celebrate the small wins! #perspective#perseverance
Q2: Hope is a confident expectation of success, not just a wish. If your expectation of a successful future has expectations for YOU in the present, what might they be? #leadupchat
A3. When hope is a confident expectation we can look forward to the future with an assurance that life is getting better all the time, that the best is yet to come, that our present condition or past history isn’t a limit on our future...we can move FORWARD. #leadupchat
A4: Develop a plan, seek accountability, defend it because you believe in it, be humble enough to admit when it’s not going the ‘way’ you expected - and, to recognize there is growth in the moments of struggle. #leadupchat
A4: our e-book for educators can be a huge help both in shifting your mindset and influencing a positive mindset shift in students. https://t.co/NTYhboN6Rf
The biggest 🔑 is practice. You don’t change mindset in a day. Find ways to practice pairing actions with hope. #LeadUpChat
A4) Hope perhaps becomes the expected outcome for a wish with intentional structure designed and implemented to reify its manifestation. A variation on, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” #leadupchat
Hi, Katya! Scroll back some. We are defining hope as a confident expectation of success. There's plenty of elements like goal-setting, matching belief with action, etc, to it. This chat has teeth. #leadupchat
A4: My team used to say hope is not a strategy.... and by that they meant.... wishing is not a strategy! But, we can all agree that we have a belief we can be the best and a belief that we have what it takes to be the best.... #leadupchat
A4: I kept a gratitude journal from 12/17 to 12/18. For 365 days I journaled about my one goal & saw overtime God's responses to my prayer. I chose to see it! I am starting my next journal this month. I keep my goals on my closet wall as well. #leadupchat
A4: My team used to say hope is not a strategy.... and by that they meant.... wishing is not a strategy! But, we can all agree that we have a belief we can be the best and a belief that we have what it takes to be the best.... #leadupchat
A4: Just like the tacit and/or overt racism which adds to the achievement gap, HOPE is effected by the Tyranny of low expectations.
Do we set our hopes to low because they are mild wishes?
#leadupchat
Tika, that’s one of my favorite concepts - productive in that I have hope in my abilities & next steps & trust in my facilitator to guide me through & not leave me drowning in the learning pit. #LeadUpChat
That is the #truth, Lana! I am incredibly thankful that despite the distance, both of my boys reach out and ask me questions on a regular basis. I joke that I am an unpaid consultant but the reality is that I am more than compensated! #leadupchat
A4: When I have an "aw, I would love to do this!" moment, I ask, watch, research, etc.
Jim Rohn says, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with". I don't always agree, but a PLN like this one sure works to move small wishes to action. #leadupchat
A4. Discipline is the key here... things we hope for are obviously a desired good. Agree up front it will take work, make a plan (not to finish, but for next steps), and celebrate every move forward. Don't take a journey, take a step. Journeys take care of themselves. #leadupchat
I love this concept, living in a world where social media is so promienent. Numbers do not translate that people follow you for any reason. Actions speak more about your character then a rank... #leadupchat
Q5: How will your teammates at your side and those you lead KNOW that you are doing more than just wishing. How will they know you confidently expect success? #leadupchat
True. Change for me has to mean that I believe it is worth it as I will gain more than I have to give up. But I reach that point based upon hope rather than despair. #leadupchat
One of the reasons I am on Twitter! Follow and learn from people who have different experiences than you. Different perspectives. Different opinions. Find chats that are not an echo chamber but invite real discussion. 👍🏼 #leadupchat
A4) Important to branch out, meet, talk to, new people. This can disrupt behaviors preventing action. From a combination of new people and already established friends, develop a support network and go for it! #leadupchat
A4: I'm going to watch my lip service. It's a learned behavior that has helped me temporarily navigate rocky situations. Going to "say" only what I'm willing "to pay," as in "pay for" with tangible action. #leadupchat
I agree. This is something I am trying to help my 2nd graders understand. We will create steps to reach an important goal (ex: reading with fluency). Our productive struggle is important work to get there😊 #leadupchat
A4. I can’t help but think about how uncomfortable the makes some people when you demonstrate a “the best is yet to come” attitude. That confident expectation, not arrogance, makes some people very uncomfortable because most of us struggle to believe in ourselves. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A3: Our “success” may change and morph as our journey progresses; however, if you can’t be flexible, think creatively, and stay positive, then success may not become reality. Hope helps a person to maintain their #flexibility#creativity#positivity even in hard times
Q3: Success often comes in segments, a journey with stages. How does hope being a "confident expectation" help in the long term, the marathon run of success? #leadupchat
I have always liked the Rohn quote because it makes me be intentional about the relationships I choose and be aware of the impact of those choices on the person/leader I am or can become! #leadupchat
A4: I seek opportunities to surround myself with people who are leading by example, living out loud, doing what they say they'll do, making me #becomebetter, and putting their goals into action. For me, changing my mindset is a social process, face-to-face and online. #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
That is GOLDEN! Marci....let's collaborate on that. Seriously. Willing to moderate with me in a few weeks? Relationships are the On-Ramp to Rigor! You are onto something there! #leadupchat
That’s unique since most change models talk about the Impetus for change being significant negative consequences. Think about smoking cessation, health (my heart attack was a big motivator for change), etc. it’s always a major catalyst for change #leadupchat
A3. Hope doesn’t allow me to give up. It continues to propel me forward, even when I am between sprints and I stop to breathe. Hope maintains my focus and vision. Hope whispers “you can do this.” #leadupchat
A5. Donald Miller's new book Storybranding (Phenomenal, by the way), says that true leaders are not the hearts of the story, but the guides. Make those around you the hero, you be the guide and everyone wins. At least I "hope" so. #leadupchat
True. Change for me has to mean that I believe it is worth it as I will gain more than I have to give up. But I reach that point based upon hope rather than despair. #leadupchat
A5. Self-doubt is a real challenge for folks. Believing in ourselves doesn’t come naturally. We have to practice it. We have to coach ourselves. We have to affirm ourselves, and over time, our hope, like our faith, is perfected. We get better and better at believing! #leadupchat
A5: Saying yes to the important and no to the not-so-important. When we prioritize our actions it communicates the seriousness we have toward our goals. More focus on the goal - less distractions. #leadupchat
A5. I expect to be the spark that ignites learning for others. I pin the following graphic to my profile as it shares how far the reach of the resources the site provides extends. #LeadUpChat
Hope is contagious and success is the disease. Surrounding yourself with people that try, can strengthen your confidence that ur hopes and hard work will be fulfilled #leadupchat
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat

A5. We must model the change and action we strive for; at times this means leading from the front but at other times it means supporting others and allowing them to lead (you lead from the back). Most important is action and striving for excellence! #leadupchat
A4 I take charge of what I’m looking for and what I pursue. If something doesn’t go the way I want, I reflect on it and grow from the experience. #leadupchat
Yes! We are only as good as our word, and those around us notice when our words and actions don't align. It can make or break realtionships. #leadupchat
A4: I'm going to watch my lip service. It's a learned behavior that has helped me temporarily navigate rocky situations. Going to "say" only what I'm willing "to pay," as in "pay for" with tangible action. #leadupchat
A6: because they will be listened to, and hear questions like:
• What do you think about __________?
• How should we attack __________?
• Will this support or mission, beliefs, and _________?
#leadupchat
A5 They will know because they're apart of all that we do. The vision is shared and collaboration is necessary. Setting teaming and individual goals fosters our progress. Celebrate along the way and keep moving forward while adding value and validating others. #leadupchat
A5: Those we work with deserve our unbounded optimism and hope. Create hope by staying on message and sharing the vision as the teams co-create the end goal.
#leadupchat
A5: its a matter of priorities. If you want to see a hope come alive, your priorities will shift to reflect that. Many people can talk the talk, but when people start noticing the way you are spending your time, energy, and effort, it will reveal your real hope. #LeadUpChat
As I think about it, it’s a combo. You have to have despair, but at the same time believe we have the capability to change. That does require hope. #leadupchat
A5: because they will be listened to, and hear:
• What do you think about __________?
• How should we attack __________?
• Will this support or mission, beliefs, and _________?
#leadupchat
PLNs.....they are more than the cool crowd, folks. Followers, likes, retweets....it's all infinitesimal compared to the power of positive peer pressure you experience with an intelligent, inspirational, incredible TRIBE! Get one! #leadupchat
A4) Important to branch out, meet, talk to, new people. This can disrupt behaviors preventing action. From a combination of new people and already established friends, develop a support network and go for it! #leadupchat
Q5: How will your teammates at your side and those you lead KNOW that you are doing more than just wishing. How will they know you confidently expect success? #leadupchat
So true! Grateful for those who brave the twitterverse and share their learning—not with the goal of notoriety but rather out of a desire to grow and be a part of the growth of others. #leadupchat
A5: If Hope is a confident expectation of success, then celebrating and sharing successes is a great way to build up that belief that hope prevails.... #leadupchat
A5: it has become part of plans. Reflective questions become a component to drive the ambition. Adjustments are made when it appears we're becoming of target #leadupchat
And this is why as leaders we must practice hope in real time. Our disposition send the message “the best is yet to come”. I believe this kind of leadership produces great results, unlike fear of failure which paralyzes people. #leadupchat
A5 I will walk the talk...lead by example. I always want to be transparent and reflective. If my steps are leading me or my team in the wrong direction, I need to make a revision in my thinking. #leadupchat
Q5: How will your teammates at your side and those you lead KNOW that you are doing more than just wishing. How will they know you confidently expect success? #leadupchat
Drown out the echo of superficial affirmation....it's killing us as connected educators in my opinion. That's why #leadupchat is the go-to for me. There's push and pull in this tribe!
#leadupchat
A5 they will working with me to meet the goal. They will see me putting skin in the game and working to better meet the needs of the students #leadupchat
YES! I'll look at our schedule for 2019 and find just the right place for this theme. It's sooooo good! We will talk soon! Thank, you, Marci! #leadupchat
A5: as I reflect on this, I think action in the face of despair or when the odds of success are little send the message you aren’t wishing for change, you are actively fighting for change, and willing to sacrifice in order to make it happen #leadupchat
Well, if I navigate our society/country from a place of privilege, Hope is the norm. I see things “work out” around me all the time. That makes Hope easy. 1/2 #leadupchat
#leadupchat A4: I have to do a lot of cognitive reframing with my students as a #SchoolPsychologist . One easy way to bring goals to the forefront, while increasing self confidence is post it’s! Put 1-2 goals and 3-4 positive qualities on your mirror so you can see them everyday
Q4: Everyone has their own learned behaviors. If your current view of hope has been a mild wish, how can you change that mindset to a confident expectation? #leadupchat
Q6: Hope is a belief but success only becomes reality with action. What's your first action step toward your biggest hope, your confident expectation for success? #leadupchat
A5. Hope isn’t just something you should exercise. It is necessary for change. Without a hope for a better and brighter future for our children, we wouldn’t do anything differently. It is our hope that drives our action. #leadupchat
If my identities make it more challenging to navigate society, and things tend to “work out” against me, Hope would be much more challenging. And much more precious when it appears. #leadupchat 2/2
Oooooohhhhh. That's what CHAMPIONSHIP coaches do: Think about Dabo. His smile after winning the natty conveyed that clearly: "The best is yet to come!"
#leadupchat
And this is why as leaders we must practice hope in real time. Our disposition send the message “the best is yet to come”. I believe this kind of leadership produces great results, unlike fear of failure which paralyzes people. #leadupchat
A5) Lead by example. Show actions toward goals and others will see that you mean what you say. But more importantly, that you will follow through. If you expect success of yourself, those around you will see your expectation for them. #leadupchat
A4. I change my wish to an expectation by continuing to change my own mindset through positive self-talk (affirmations rock), finding a tribe, building my learning network, being open to change and intentionally looking for leaders who “have what I want.” #leadupchat
My pleasure! Looking forward to it! Here is a quote to get us simmering:
“Multipliers make sure that everyone is wearing a seatbelt because they are about to put their foot on the accelerator.” @LizWiseman#leadupchat
A6. Share your ideas with others or put on paper- then it becomes real and feel more compelled to act. You cannot worry about mistakes or “what if’s “ - act, reflect, learn, grow! #leadupchat
A6 I will continue to move forward in hope - for my kids, my district, myself ... even when I don’t see evidence! I will do the next thing and the next until hope is fully realized! #leadupchat
A5) Celebrate success! Our teammates need to know what we mean by success. When we call attention to success as it happens, the concept is reinforced and we all win! #leadupchat
A6 We are working on digital portfolios for teachers and students. At our upcoming instructional team meeting I want everyone to share where they are with this goal and what is the next concrete step. #babysteps#movingforward#leadupchat
A6. First steps are incredibly important because they give trajectory. While you don't have to have everything figured out, you at least need to be facing and moving in the right direction. But, there is some grace... if you're facing the right direction, MOVE! #leadupchat
HA! I'm a #Miami fan so no love for #Clemson, BUT a TON of respect. Well, I both like and respect, Dabo. Dang. He's got a "best is yet to come" swag about him that is infectious! #leadupchat
A6: My first action steps are to daily strengthen the habits that help me meet my goal. Just hoping Aline won’t get me there. It’s an everyday process of celebrating the small goals & the mundane to reach the large ones. #leadupchat
A5- It must be shared, whether through written or spoken words but most importantly in actions you(I) are taking daily in everything we do. We can't expect others to change and work together towards a goal or vision etc without sharing our thoughts & our expectations. #leadupchat
Have you added your #OneWord2019 - biggest hope - to our website yet? https://t.co/8B48EAe7uq Almost 100 educators have and it is awesome to scroll through and see them. Just DM me your graphic and I will be glad to add it. #LeadUpChat
#leadupchat A5: Just as in education, modeling is extremely important when it comes to leadership. 1) Having open conversations about both your failures and accomplishments. 2) Being transparent in how you organize and manage your goals and the steps you take to reach them.
Q5: How will your teammates at your side and those you lead KNOW that you are doing more than just wishing. How will they know you confidently expect success? #leadupchat
I think it’s about expectations. I connect hope to expected outcomes. Being “hopeful” is believing “it usually works out.” Hope May be more; “it doesn’t look like it will work out, yet I believe it will despite the circumstances.” #leadupchat
AND I know you are committed to helping produce that evidence. Me, too, friend! I'm with ya!
Again, please follow this exceptional #eduhero, folks. I'm better every time we talk or I visit her classroom. #proudprincipal#leadupchat
A6 I will continue to move forward in hope - for my kids, my district, myself ... even when I don’t see evidence! I will do the next thing and the next until hope is fully realized! #leadupchat
A6: I just ordered "The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools" and have a few other things in the works to push myself professionally. #leadupchat
Q6: Hope is a belief but success only becomes reality with action. What's your first action step toward your biggest hope, your confident expectation for success? #leadupchat
BONUS Q: Who are three trusted teammates who can help you clearly identify when you are facing the right direction and can give you that push to take your first step? Examples for me: @Rantime@heidiharris515@drneilgupta! #leadupchat
In reply to
@andyaddis, @Rantime, @heidiharris515, @drneilgupta
I can agree with that. I know for me, Hope growing up meant ignoring what was in front of me. I had to believe in things I could not see. I had to commit to something that was not yet tangible. Hope, real hope, is very much rooted in faith. #leadupchat
One of my former students is a linebacker for Clemson. His is a story of hope in the face of adversity. Love that kid and love watching him succeed! #leadupchat

Many thanks to @PrincipalPaul for guiding our discussion this morning with such thought provoking questions!
To all who shared their passionate responses .... you are appreciated! #LeadUpChat
THANK YOU for joining us for #leadupchat this AM! BIG-BIG shoutout to @andyaddis for his inspiration and helping lead the way.
We don't HOPE you have a successful 2019, we confidently expect it!!! #leadupchat
Something else I’m reflecting on; when being “hopeful” erases or marginalizes folx lived experiences. Hope recognizes, empathizes and shows compassion for the lived experiences of others. It has to. #leadupchat
A6: First action is to begin to articulate the vision for the reality we hope to create and to begin identifying action steps and success criteria that will occur along the way. #leadupchat
