A1 Make formative assesment the priority of your class teamed with timely feedback. Show Ss that progress, a little to a lot, is what learning is all about. Grades don’t define who we are,it’s things like curiosity, empathy, empowerment & love that define us #LearnLAP#formative
A1- I think goal setting is key. Ss set goals and work towards them, giving them ownership. Coach them and celebrate with them along the way! Ss get more excited about their learning! #learnlap
A1: Daniel Pink says purpose, mastery and autonomy is what drives intrinsic motivation. Give Ss choice, a purpose and an appropriate challenge and get out of their way. Also, eliminate or limit as much external rewards as you can. (Grades, certificates, prizes) #LearnLAP
A1: I don't give grades on assignments, only feedback. It takes every student from their Personal Point A to their Personal Point B. High grades can lead to less effort & low grades can lead to giving up. Replacing grades w/feedback improves intrinsic motivation for us! #LearnLAP
A1 I think it's important to focus on the skills learned and knowledge gained instead of on an end grade. Ss need choice in how they show what they know and need the ability to choose how they learn. #LearnLAP
A1 Give them all the tools to be successful. Don't put a grade on it until Ss are done learning, and keep the focus on authentic learning activities. #learnlap
a1: don't grade everything. Ask kids what grade they got at their last soccer practice or dance rehearsal. let them realize grades aren't always real life. #LearnLAP
A1 Last year I spent a lot of time talking with my students about helping everyone move from where they were. Working together to promote success for everyone rather than competitive. I think it helped. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Intrinsic motivation comes from a confidence, a positive outlook. The feeling of mastery and conquering a challenge. When we put the focus on personal growth and not on grades - students are more excited about the process and discovery of new information cause it’s fun
A1 If we make learning authentic, relevant, and positive for our students you don’t have to worry about grades as a motivator! Give them a feeling of accomplishment! #LearnLAP
A1 @DanielPink says that autonomy, mastery, and purpose drive intrinsic motivation. Kids need to access their agency, connect their effort to their progress, and always understand the WHY! #learnlap
A1. If we empower students to be part of the their own growth process with short term goal setting it becomes more about their personal achievements than then ending grade. Celebrate those successes!!!#learnlap
A1) make feedback a priority. Something I’m bad at, a lot, but consistent feedback communicates growth in learning rather than done and get the grade #LearnLAP
A1: My HR sts set goals for themselves, but this year, I'm going to encourage them to set goals to improve some aspect of their learning instead of accomplishing a specific grade. #LearnLap
A1 We must focus more on the process rather than the product. Grades don’t define students. We have to refine our practices to truly learn where our Ss are and where they need to go. #learnlap
A1) I think a lot of it is them seeing their growth. I love doing portfolios for Ss to show their progress and feel pride from it. When you see where you came from you believe more in the possibilities #LearnLAP
A1: Celebrate and talk about hard work and effort. Involve students in their own goal setting. Success for one child doesn’t look like success for another. A cookie cutter view of achievement is unjust to students at all levels of ability.
#learnlap We can help Ss be less grade focused by being less so ourselves. Minimize the number of activities that result in a grade. Refrain from grading the practice. Grade only the assessment. Let Ss gauge the practice they need and CHOOSE to do it. Help them gauge.
A1: Unfortunately, I think this is the result of adults being concerned with test scores/grades. One thing I think we need to do is to keep a portfolio of their work so that they can see their improvements over time. We could also give feedback instead of just a grade.#LearnLAP
A1: I think identifying the personal goal in each student is a start. What does each student want to get out of a lesson. Then use the collaboration time to walk around and see if another student has that same personal goal and ask the 1st student to come over and help. #learnLAP
A1 Assign and provide activities which relate to them, ask their thinking, their paths, their morals, their goals. When we bring in the whole student, everything becomes intrinsically motivated! Time to switch up the mundane for meaningful! #learnlap
A1. Finding out what interests students and bringing their interests into the classroom through problem solving and different ways we can relate it to real life! #learnlap
A1- This is something I work really hard at b/c my young Ss really are not grade-oriented at all & I want them to stay that way. We speak about how it feels to be proud of our work & we focus on sharing so Ss have authentic audiences. #LearnLAP
A1 We can help students value themselves as learners by authentically valuing their growth. The S's should have Learning Journals showing Beginning, Mid and End learning on all learning. The whole system needs to change #LearnLAP
A1: We need to tap into their interests and desires. When we are allowing them to have voice and choice in the activities or demonstration of understanding it becomes less about the grade and more about having fun. #LearnLAP
A1 #LearnLAP If we teach students how to teach themselves rather than teaching them- this puts the ownership of learning in their hands. When learning becomes personal, purposeful and most importantly relevant we get motivated to explore and excited to try new things
A1 Honor the iterative cycle. Spend time providing genuine feedback & let Ss act upon it. Class content should be relevant to Ss' lives and connections to outside should be rich. #LearnLAP
A1: Intrinsic motivation stems from confidence, a positive sense of self and a drive/desire/passion that motivates us! Help students to BELIEVE in their own potential and ‘doors’ will open that require less and less extrinsic motivation! #LearnLAP
#learnlap We can help Ss be less grade focused by being less so ourselves. Minimize the number of activities that result in a grade. Refrain from grading the practice. Grade only the assessment. Let Ss gauge the practice they need and CHOOSE to do it. Help them gauge.
A1 - My students have SMAARTER Goals that they create, monitor progress towards, and determine when they're accomplished. #LearnLAP
- Feel free to use our format if you'd like! https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m
A1: We need to tap into their interests and desires. When we are allowing them to have voice and choice in the activities or demonstration of understanding it becomes less about the grade and more about having fun. #LearnLAP
A1 With my pop, I have to give ss a modicum of success before they will equate success with hard work and good grades. However I had a s this year get 67 to 71s and was so proud because he was the only one in his family to walk across the 8th grade stage. #LearnLAP
#learnlap Humans are born intrinsically motivated & able to learn. They have unlearned this in school by having every thing they touch get graded. This has confused their motivation. We need to step back & let the path be the path....trust that it leads to the destination.
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
I really like this. Unfortunately, my school looks at student grades to determine the quality of the student and teacher :( Schools need to get past this. #LearnLap
A1 Ss need to know the why behind what they're doing The learning should be authentic in order to increase engagement. Let them have a voice and a choice let them set some of the expectations and boundaries and make reflection an important part of the activity #learnlap
A2 Elaborating on the first question, by having constant conversations and providing feedback with Ss about their learning. Keep pushing the envelope that thinking doesn’t just end when we reach a answer, rather, we need to reflect on, build, and innovate something new. #LearnLAP
A1: I have changed my vocabulary to use the word #mastery when I talk to students. We talk in terms of showing that a skill or subject has been truly demonstrated as learned. Grades follow after an understanding of what it means to #master something. #LearnLAP
A2: Model and focus on improvement and revision. Don’t grade everything. Don’t demand work completion. Think about what policies you have in place that might be sending the wrong message and adjust it. #LearnLAP
A1a. When Ss are controlling their learning by setting goals and judging themselves if they've achieved the goals, they are owning their learning! #learnlap
A2 I love the idea of portfolios, BUT! When it's best work... this past year my students set goals: reading, writing, tech, communication, & personal. They provided visual evidence and analyzed their growth and how the growth would positively affect THEIR future plans. #LearnLAP
A2 We must create cultures where students feel comfortable making mistakes in the classroom. We can get them there by modeling mindful risk-taking, meaningful mistake-making, and the reflection required to continuously grow. #learnlap
A2: We have to get beyond "one and done" assignments. Ss need authentic assgts that they will experience opportunities to grow from failure with feedback from their peers and Ts #LearnLAP
A2 I'm reading Shake Up Learning right now, and @ShakeUpLearning suggestion is to create learning experiences that go beyond the school day. When students are motivated to learn because they have choice in it, their focus is not an end goal of a good grade. #LearnLAP
A1: In my experience, students become more intrinsically motivated as they develop and strengthen a growth mindset. Carol Dweck's @TEDTalks introduced me to this concept in 2015. https://t.co/nELv8fMt2r#TLAP#LEARNLAP
A2- Again, it goes back to student focus. Revisit goals, reflect on progress, learn from mistakes. ALL learners should be doing that (Ts included!) #learnlap
A2 We have to put the focus on the process not just the end product. Define the steps, make the connections, teach iteration and refinement. Helps with understanding missteps and makes failure less crushing. #LearnLAP
A1: NOT giving rewards for scores/grades & instead having students set goals for themselves is a great 1st step. It’s frustrating when my new students expect rewards for everything they do, but they learn to become intrinsically motivated & proud of themselves 💪🏼 #LearnLAP
A2 - It's definitely a mindset shift for my students to all of a sudden care more about improving their work over the course of days, rather than just turning it in and being done with it! We talk Growth Mindset a lot and have mini-lessons often: https://t.co/1vDDEaf3SW#LearnLAP
A2. Have a growth mindset and encourage one in the kids. Have conversations with them about their work rather than simply sticking a grade on them and leaving it at that. Make the classroom environment meaningful and reflective. #learnlap
A2- We start the year by reading Fantastic Elastic Brain and discussing how learning and trying new things can actually 'stretch' our brain & make stretchy slime so Ss can manipulate it while we talk. We refer to this lesson all year -sets the tone for a focus on growth #LearnLAP
A2 Teaching Ss to focus more on growth requires changing our own mindset. Practice what we preach, we must model, model, and model some more. #learnlap
A1 #LearnLAP Goals are a destination-if we create a quest for students to join to reach them-create a mysterious labyrinth & maze of obstacles & hidden treasures- they will see the journey not as a laborious trek but an adventure-this is when they enter willingly & with intrigue
A2 Due dates could be guidelines to progress. Regular reflections leveraging #edtech to capture digital recordings of work to highlight progress made. Invite outside observers to comment on work and give suggestions for future iterations. #LearnLAP
a2:
"What did I get on this?"
"What do you THINK you earned?"
"Ummm, a B-?"
"Cool, so what needs to be improved?"
"Probably the sentence structure?"
"Cool, go fix it."
#learnlap
A1: I try to put more emphasis on the process rather than the product of learning. We stop long the way to take time to reflect & discuss. I provide feedback on effort bc use I want them to know what’s going well or to think about what’s not. #learnLAP
A2 When we thank kids for being brave and making mistakes, it builds a culture where mistakes are actually *desirable*. Imagine a world where we ask each other to make mistakes and share about them! #vulnerability#learnlap
A2 if we use good tools for progress monitoring in our classrooms the students can follow their growth! We need to constantly praise and be supportive of these kiddos! #LearnLAP
A2: I think it really begins with the teacher. I used to be driven to accomplish tasks and get ahead, being motivated by competition. I need to set a good example for my students. #LearnLap
A2: Every assignment can/should have unlimited do-overs. Think about the games they play. Do they only get one chance to "master" a level? No! They learn from their mistakes and try it again, and again, and again, until they have advanced. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
Find things they love and tap into their interests. Tie in multiple subjects areas because it gives them chances to show their knowledge in different ways. #LearnLAP
A2 I noticed this year when students chose their response types (animation movies, video game etc) they were a lot more likely to redo, rework until it was perfect in their minds. #VoiceandChoice#LearnLAP
We had traditional report cards up until this year. This year we're shifting to Standards Based Reporting, which lends itself pretty well to a no grades, improvement-focused environment! I always supplemented our report cards with TONS of details about student progress. #LearnLAP
#learnlap High standards are necessary for Ss to focus on growth and improvement. Reflection and dialogue on S's process helps them recognize that it's important. Try to limit discussion on what they know or don't know.....but help them focus on their practice habits.
A2: This is a tough mindset to break because depending on your grade level they have been taught to work toward a grade. My job will be easier than a middle school teacher! 21 days to form a habit! #learnLAP
A2: I like to use sports as examples I know not all students play sports but it’s a concrete example. I love using Michael Jordan as an example. #LearnLAP
A2: SS goal setting and progress monitoring, growth mindset, emphasizing the process and not the product, model what we want to see and share our own mistakes and growth, provide timely constructive feedback, and celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
A2: The implementation of deliberate growth mindset instruction at school has irrevocably changed my own children + my students. Focus moved away from the perception that you are successful if you get an A on the assignment to you are successful if you have learned. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
A2: I've found it hard to get rid of grades in an AP class, but I've switched to a mastery-based scale, unlimited retakes on quizzes, and in most cases students take quizzes when they're ready, not when I'm ready. #learnlap
A2 Pride is a huge thing in the African American community. I am constantly massaging egos, having reflective talks. What went well, what could we improve on? Ss in our area are fragile, especially sped. Finished products are a way to really increase growth mindset #learnlap
A2) Have conversations about their growth with them. Post growth. Have students track their own growth. In the pic below I have a chart of tracking students reading growth throughout the year #LearnLAP
A2 practice does not make perfect all the time focus on producing something not just completing something encourage students to fail forward encourage teamwork set goals along the way and reflect upon those goals use self and peer to peer assessment #learnlap
A2: It all depends on the culture that has been established. If they know that the process is more important than the product, that’s what they’ll focus on. Ss will typically remember the process to something more than a letter grade or proficiency score. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
A1: NOT giving rewards for scores/grades & instead having students set goals for themselves is a great 1st step. It’s frustrating when my new students expect rewards for everything they do, but they learn to become intrinsically motivated & proud of themselves 💪🏼 #LearnLAP
We don't have grades in our classroom, so they focus on skills acquisition including academic, social, life, behavioral, etc. They're very good at it! I work with them as they write goals, I write some for them, very few are quantitative. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A2: The tasks involved in the process along the way should be front and center. Ss need feedback on the tasks. Not necessarily a grade, but feedback. Once Ss start getting feedback, they sense their hard work is respected. #learnlap
I started #growthmindset inn my class last year! I started it in the middle of the year and it totally changed the way kids learned by the end of the year. #learnLAP
Yes! We should celebrate the training the way an athlete performed as well as the victory they achieved. Same for our students on their growth in learning! #learnlap
A2. The ideas of portfolios where the Ss can go back and compare their work to see their growth! Having them keep a progress chart in portfolios is helpful, too! Encouring Ss to take the time and make nec. changes to strive for growth in writing! #learnlap
A2: I have started adding things in like @peergrade to get students to provide feedback before I see a product and to incorporate the standards into their own thinking. Create spaces for critical reflection and incorporating what it means to show learning. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP It is all about personal responsibility & mindful strategies. When community conversation is based around positive feedback, reflection & growth this solidifies a more natural, free-spirited atmosphere. I always say “try-not for approval but for personal admiration”
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
require risk taking, acknowledge process over product, show all the world changers who made tons of mistakes, and many of whom did not do well in traditional school
#learnlap
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
I also love using genius hour! It is incredible to see the motivation and drive students have when they are given the CHOICE. Even reluctant readers and writers love genius hour because it is a chance for them to explore their own interests. #LearnLAP
A3 Grade Conferences make it about learning.
"So I can still fix it?"
"Please do!"
Some great epiphanies came from those quick conversations and the work which lead up to them!
#learnLAP
A3 We all make mistakes. Failing forward is a sign of testing new waters and that should be embraced. Mistakes made along the way are opportunities to learn. We evaluate the choices that led to the mistake and try to keep them from happening again. #LearnLAP
A3 I think it's a work in progress. The older students are set in the thought of needing good grades. I see the younger ones embracing the growth mindset more often. #LearnLAP
We say that mistakes help us grow and we don't give up until we are proud (of our own work). I am always a learner so I tell stories about myself in graduate school during our class meetings. #learnLAP
A3 Failure is inevitable and welcomed. We learn more from what doesn’t work for us rather than what does because we’re all different—it’s not one size fits all. Science is a process and with it comes missteps and botches. Ensure mistakes will happen but reflect on them #LearnLAP
A3 Ss should perceive mistakes as learning opportunities. Being able to FAIL before they PREVAIL should be the mindset we instill in our schools. #learnlap
A2: It’s difficult w/everything we have to teach...however, when students have the opportunity to master concepts, they’re more likely to want to complete their work - because they’re capable. They need time & engaging opportunities instead of more mundane tasks. #LearnLAP
A3 Model failure in the classroom and share your journey with failure through #storytelling. Kids need role models they respect to see that failure is a safe space #learnlap
A3: We have some students who are devastated by failure, some who recognize it as a learning moment, and some who have apathy because they know (and to be honest, take advantage of) we as teachers will give them opportunities to redo. A pretty healthy blend of the 3. #learnlap
A3 Every time a student makes a mistake they are learning! In my math class the best discussions come from talking about our mistakes! All starts with creating a culture in the classroom where mistakes and revision are encouraged! #LearnLAP
A3- It was a mind shift for Ss and Ps- At first Ss took cues from Ps so there had to be a lot of conversations with Ps. Once we all worked towards same goal, big improvements. Ss often don't want to let down Ps and Ts- refocus all #learnlap
A3: In our Lab, it is necessary. No answers are given, but student-initiated discoveries are made. We had to shift our mindset as facilitators to allow our Ss to build their own confidence by growing as a result of their own failures. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A3 fail = first attempt in learning. Always give students a second chance let them try again let students help students let them come to you and ask questions offer meaningful feedback have them make a plan allow revisions and reflect on the experience #learnlap
There are so many people that we celebrate today who had to overcome amazing obstacles! Ss love to her about someone they know about overcoming struggle #LearnLAP
A3 - I teach my students to expect and accept setbacks and failures because I'm challenging them to learn at a high level. Growth Mindset & Marble Theory requires an understanding that we "add marbles" as we get stronger at a skill & that requires practice & effort! #LearnLAP
A3: Many sts see failure as something negative, which can make them not want to try. I remind my sts that mistakes and failure, especially in science, can lead to great discoveries... in science or in themselves. #LearnLap
#learnlap Assume they care about the grade and USE THAT!
Ss in my class are engaged in the learning process (including mistakes/failure and improvement) because I offer re-assessment. If you close the gradebook, why would Ss care about fixing their mistakes? YOU don't care!
I totally agree about the parent aspect. As a mom, I find myself rushing to see the report card and state test scores. I have to remind myself that grades are not what my focus should be! #LearnLAP
A3 We help our Ss understand that failure is a part of learning by framing failures as opportunities to grow. We must provide our Ss with opportunities to reflect on their learning, their struggles, & how they will apply their struggle knowledge to next steps #learnlap
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A3: 'Failing Forward' is going to be a focus in 2018-2019. We can learn, innovate, and build resilience. "Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward." -John C. Maxwell Check out this article on failing forward. https://t.co/ksTpgzOcZN#LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
Love this! Will definitely look for this book. "You Failed" from Meet the Robinsons is another great resource that helps bring the focus to growth. I think these concrete examples really help kids understand the concept! #LearnLAP
Love this shift in mindset- it helps Ss see where the value of learning is placed. If you earn an A but really didn’t learn you just memorized, what was the point? #LearnLAP
A3) They see it as the end of the road. Not as another opportunity to learn and grow. Once you communicate and help them progress those mindsets can go away #LearnLAP
A3 I love BAND. This is, hopefully, built into the very fabric of what we do. You played a wrong note. What are the clues to fix it. How can we adjust for that in the future. Ok, do it again. All in 30-60 secs. #LearnLAP
A3 I'm going to have a little larger classroom this year, but I'm hoping to continue skill conferences. I sit with each student and talk about what is going well and what is now. I write down what we discussed on an index card and that goes with the s. #learnlap
A3: My Ss typically come to me and are pretty hard on themselves. I share my failures with them and how they're opportunities to learn something new or to improve. I also work really hard to build a supportive culture where they feel safe. #learnlap
A3: It takes a long time to for a student to understand that they should expect to stay persistant and not just stop after the first feedback -- it's a type of maturity that many students lack. #learnlap
A3. Ss need to know it's ok to fail the first time. First attempt in learning. And so on! We learn by our mistakes. That is where we learn to problem solve! Analyze, experiment, move forward to succesion! #learnlap
A3: Grades (or a grade) have been the focus of many Ss thinking. By making the end product focus on explaining what was learned, Ss have to really consider what they learned, and if the grade is a true mark of learning #learnlap
A2: Giving kids time to review feedback and improve, possibly not giving a grade (or at least not showing it to them) the first time, even (I know this might be a stretch) basing their grade off of themselves. Often, kids who earn “100”s wouldn’t see the room to grow.#LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: How can we teach our students to be more focused on growth, improvement and revision, rather than work completion, grades and perfection? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Every step we take does not mean an advance-but it does mean movement- momentum means change and change is progress in some fashion- so as long as we are not idle we are learning. Success & failure are both forms of energy- it depends on where you direct it
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A3: I hope Ss see failure/mistakes as part of life since I make mistakes, too! When I do, I talk about it with them. If they point them out to me first, I don’t get upset. I model what I want them to get: mistakes are proof you’re doing something & you learn from them. #LearnLAP
If you help them view risk taking as a positive then the learning outcomes will be that way too. It might be difficult, if it’s not impossible. #LearnLAP
Great point about video games! What I don't like is that video games never let you die anymore. You just respawn or start over again, again, again. When we played you had a limited number of lives and then had to walk away! #learnLAP
I find myself telling the kids all the time that our class is a judgement free zone and the learning is never “finished”, everyone can always improve but sometime you choose to stop a hard time we don’t grow our brains. #learnlap
A3: we set goals using data triangles. If we get the goal great if not then it’s something we know as a class we need to revisit it’s not a failure but a revisit topic. There is a “percentage” and I was afraid they would be discouraged but they love the triangles. #LearnLAP
A3: Austin’s Butterfly seems to fit in this chat right about here. https://t.co/Dsq0WYA53j short video on students giving and accepting feedback to improve. Culture! #learnLAP
A3: (Not really an answer, but a thought): Are we, as teachers, as courageous and resilient as we say that students ought to be? Do we speak up and take risks in faculty meetings? With our supervisor? Most adults are far more terrified to fail than kids are. #LearnLAP
A3: Create a #culture of #transparency where we share our own failures & take the fear of failure, shame, & loss out of the experience of learning. Focus on #feedback. In college setting like mine, the experience changes from prof to prof so it can be challenging. #LearnLAP
A4 One of my campuses adopted the feedback "rules" of kind, specific, and helpful. It works for teacher > student, peer > peer, and coach > teacher! #LearnLAP
. I talk a lot about how we all have strengths but if we don’t make mistakes, push ourselves or have a hard time we are not growing our brains. #learnlap
A3 Part 2 - You know, baseball players who fail 70 percent of the time are the best in the game. Weathermen by nature (pun intended) fail on a fair basis. Why is our educational system including failure as such a traumatic event? #learnlap
A4 Recently switched feedback to be question-based and when possible, to include the support materials so students can self-assess and edit. I use ProKeys now, so instead of AFTER submissions, I can see each student every day, 3x in a full process essay. T & S approved! #learnLAP
A4 I love to conference with my students especially with their reading and writing and @geniushour I have set a goal to organize it so it can happen more often. #LearnLAP
A4 - I give feedback in person to individuals, the whole class, & small groups. I do comments on Google Docs for writing (& want to try @KaizenaHQ). Feedback is all day, every day, always expected & appreciated. Even when constructive, students come to welcome it! #LearnLAP
A3: My Ss know that FAIL Means First Attempt In Learning and that we don’t give up. I remind them that if no one ever tried for fear of failure then think of the discoveries that would have never occurred. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A2: Teach kids how to set measurable and achievable goals for themselves. Help them SEE that growth. Provide timely feedback and allow them to learn from it. Show them that the process matters. Just like in math, it's not just about the answer, it's about the work. #learnLAP
A4: Feedback is constant and immediate. Tons of verbal feedback, esp in small groups. Ss also receive it while using technology like #Quizizz I hope to use it more in #GoogleEDU & #Schoology this year #LearnLAP
A4: I give constructive feedback on assignments, but I need to improve my feedback during lessons. If I follow @PaulSolarz ideas in Learn Like A Pirate, I will have the time and ability to give more feedback during lessons. #LearnLap
#learnlap Feedback is constant. From praise for asking/answering a question, to asking for more work on a problem b/c we can't see where the error occurred. Feedback is given from me and solicited from S peers. Grading cycles include personalized comments.
A4 classroom behavior is how my students give me feedback on my teaching. I give algebra students guiding questions as feedback and we reflect on our misconceptions! Always focused on getting better everyday! #LearnLAP
A4 Feedback is short, concise and student focused. More often than not, I ask them for the feedback. They know... they just need to be given the opportunity to evaluate and iterate. #LearnLAP
A3. Students come to class with the idea that school is about grades. We live in a highly competitive area, so it can sometimes take a lot of conversations to bust through that wall. By the end of the year, though their mindset has changed. #learnlap
A3: It's like the scarlet letter in my building! I'm going to change this in my classroom this year for sure by letting make mistakes after mistake until they understand that it's ok! #learnLAP
A4: In our Lab, we accomplish feedback through informal visits w/our groups working on projects. We also require our students to complete SMART goals, so many times that is my baseline for starting a discussion about an engagement. "Can I see your SMART Goal, please?" #LearnLAP
A4: Feedback in my classroom was something we did after a music performance. Now it is becoming part of every step in the process. What good is feedback if you don’t have time to use the feedback? I’m currently working on more opportunities for peer feedback. #LearnLAP
A3: “We inspect what we expect.” If we want our kids to take risks and strive to improve, we must show that it’s what we value (with our praise and living by example). Let’s focus on improvement! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
A4: I teach HS English, where grading can overwhelm and kill all my teachng joy. I do as much informal feedback as I can when Ss are drafting. I also conference as much as I can. Midterm exam is a portfolio conference based on rewrites of 2 essays. #learnlap
A3: My ss probably "fail" more than most. We focus on making progress & personal improvement. I had a ss get a 14% on his reading test, but he got 45% on the next one. We celebrated the progress in a big way! By the time of his SOL test he made enough progress to pass! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: How do students perceive failure and making mistakes in your class or school? How can we help them see it as an important part of the learning process? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Feedback is consistent- frequent. Through 1-minute check ins, remediation and enrichment circles and reflection in journals. I ask for feedback as much as I give it. I am always seeking new ideas from my students on how to improve lessons and make them more accessible
I use seesaw frequently in my classroom and I am able to give immediate feedback which I think is very important. We look at the parts they got correct and go from there I don’t focus on the wrong. #LearnLAP
A4: My Ss receive oral and/or written feedback on a daily basis. I provide them with “glows” 💡 and “grows” 🌱 and we talk about next steps. I’ve even had Ss Provide glows and grows to each other which always makes me smile. #LearnLAP
A4 The timing of feedback can always be improved. After we provide feedback, we must follow up and provide feedback again. It’s a continuous learning cycle. #LearnLAP
A4- Feedback comes in several different forms. In conferences, live documents, informal conversations, assessments. I try to make it very personal. Sometimes, it is not as timely as I know it should be. That's my biggest struggle. #learnlap
A4Feedback is giving both formally & informally. The key to effective feedback is ensuring that our Ss are aware of learning expectations at the start of our lessons. This allows us to increase the specificity of our feedback during lessons & use it to support Ss growth #learnlap
I think conferences are so important for students to get that one-on-one time. To make them effective we need to be able to give them positive feedback and a teaching point to keep them always moving forward. #LearnLAP
#learnlap Q4: I have been reading this summer about single point rubrics on #cultofpedegogy and it seems like a better way to give feedback to promote growth to all levels.
A4 feedback is so important but it has to be meaningful useful and encouraging I love @Flipgrid for both general and specific feedback peer to peer feedback and teacher-to-student feedback I also like it for responding to feedback #learnlap
In my class we talk a lot about being honest with ourselves. I let them know when I don't understand something so that we can fix it. It takes a long time but eventually understand that learning never ends and it's okay to have to improve something. #learnlap
#learnlap Learned a great technique I want to try from @alicekeeler using Google Slides, with each student adding a slide to a shared document and I can see them all on grid view. Feedback comments given while they work.
#learnlap I've stopped putting a grade at the top of assessments. I do show deductions next to comments on incorrect solutions. But this way Ss are drawn to the problems that need attention and the comments, not on the perceived summative judgment number on top.
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
A4: I do give feedback on assignments and very specific and not just the "good job" or "needs work". I give positive feedback whenever I can especially in front of the class. I try to give constructive feedback in a private way but every kid wanted to listen to it! #learnLAP
I'm grateful for dentist appointments w/ no cavities, lunch w/@jamie3983 + the kids, C1 being told she could get her braces off at our next appointment (the week before starting middle school), #LearnLAP chat and dinner I didn't have to cook! #GratitudeExperiment@tamaraletter
It’s been fun chatting with you, but unfortunately I need to check out early to start the day! If you have a spare moment, please follow and share @learninate - the (brand new) social network for learning. #edtechchat#learnlap
Intrinsic motivation is an innate desire to push ourselves and more importantly to understand the world around us. When we receive constructive feedback, our motivation increases, when we reflect we realize our potential and acknowledge our growth as this motivates us #LearnLAP
A4: I do a lot of voice/video notes on assignments and leave space to talk at the end of class. Notes on assignments are specific and address the areas of success and need. I also use @RemindHQ to direct message Ss and send info out. I want to add grade conferences. #LearnLAP
A5 This past year:
Student-led Conferences
Student & Parent @Flipgrid
Tell Your Intended Audience (end of the year) talks
Gratitude Writing and Calls
Museum of Tolerance Field Trip
Old Globe Guest Speaker and Field Trip
Anytime we can, we need to! #LearnLAP
A5 We can reach out to parents and others to comment on student work posted on blogs and other online places. Hearing what others think has a huge impact on our students. #LearnLAP
A4, Feedback is best when it's 1:1, T:S, guided questions, kindness, Ss centered! Peer to peer feedback, working with Ss on open-ended questions to share with one another!#learnlap
A5- Ss need to learn how to give meaningful, constructive feedback. Teach them how to be specific and helpful. Also, sharing Ss work beyond the classroom is important. Create authentic opportunities for feedback! #learnlap
A5: social media is the way to go! Students beg me to post their work on Instagram, Twitter, fb, etc. It gives the parents a quick easy way to see their child’s achievements! #LearnLAP
A5 we have to give our students an authentic audience! Use mistakes as teachable moments. If we praise mistakes and revision students will organically help each other when mistakes occur! #LearnLAP
A5 I send home cover sheets with assessments. It has questions parents can ask. I also send e-mails with sentence starters for giving feedback #learnlap
A5: In music, we share small group performances w/ the whole class but I think I am rushing a step. I love the idea of quality boosters & I want to re-evaluate my process to allow for more thoughtful time creating quality boosters & time to use the quality boosters. #LearnLAP
A5 Teach the the process. Have them critique the process. Help them learn great questions and questioning techniques. Then model psotive but critical feedback. Talk about the work not the person. You have to teach these skills. #LearnLAP
A5b Next year, families will get our class Instagram info and students will each have to post a picture & title at some point in the year. Also inviting parents to read one of our novels & join our end of novel socratic seminars! #LearnLAP
A4: Feedback varies from room to room and ss to ss. It can be verbal or written and come from a T or classmates. I would like to increase feedback given while ss are working on assignments as opposed to after they've finished. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Open-dialogue with parents is essential for every classroom-when we communicate consistently with parents they can reinforce the strategies we use in the classroom. Parents are our best allies, they want to be involved and when we enlist their expertise-balance achieved
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
A5. I want to create participatory events through our after school where my students can bring in parents and teach them. This is my goal for the summer and developing my flipgrid skills. #learnlap
I agree! In my experience, students feel very empowered when they are able to self assess. As they learn the skills of understanding rubrics and going over their own work, they become more willing to improve and make changes! #LearnLAP
A5: Instructional technology is making this easier! Using @Seesaw, Ts + family members can send messages to the student in response to submissions. Using @googledrive, multiple Ts and/or mentors can respond to artifacts/reflections via comment, chat, or even Hangouts. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
#learnlap Peer feedback is critical to creating a safe, collaborative learning environment. Each day in my class, Ss work in small groups going over the homework. We learn through questions. We pay deliberate attention to how Ss give each other constructive, kind feedback.
A5 We can enlist the services of stakeholders in providing feedback to our Ss when we increase the relevance in our lessons. When Ss engage in meaningful life-connected tasks, stakeholders can provide feedback & contribute to lessons learned as Ss continue their growth #learnlap
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
A5: Blogs are a great idea b/c anyone can give feedback. I like the idea of "Quality Boosters". Teaching sts to give polite and specific feedback is something I will try. They need to look for ways their classmates can improve. #LearnLap
I did this during Hour of Code week, and it was so great! The kids taught their parents what they had learned that week about coding. Everyone kinder-5 had a really good time! #LearnLAP
A4: We can give feedback to kids in all sorts of ways - it doesn’t always need to be formal. I think one of the best ways is to do it in the moment, then let them try again with you there to make sure that they know how it’s supposed to feel/look like. #LearnLAP
A5: I really like using the support staff in my building, i.e. custodian, secretary, lunch moms rock! Also we do have a PBIS in our building and feedback is constantly being thrown around. We are revamping our process as a building this year for better results. #learnLAP
A5 #LearnLAP I like to form really strong relationships with parents- they know their child better than I ever will and their insight is invaluable- plus when students know their parents & teachers are aligned in their learning- behavior impractical and expectations are united
We definitely should be practicing what we preach. We can’t expect our Ss or colleagues to do things that we are ourselves aren’t willing to do. #LearnLAP
A5 invite parents to comment on student blogs invite community members to discuss a lesson in the class to be a guest reader or to show students how to use math in business get local companies to judge The Science Fair and offer feedback the possibilities are endless! #learnlap
A5. Using social media to view Ss work, or pics on twitter, asking Ss to show work and share with parents or a family member whose an adult. Have them initial it, and give a written opinion very quickly. #learnlap
A5- Ss reflect each day on their personal learning. They write a short statement reflecting on glows and grows. More for them, but Ps and Ts can reflect along side them. Ss shared it on SeeSaw daily! The depth of their insight increased as they practiced. #learnlap
Students had free rein to write what they needed to say and to what audience. Some provided talks in class (heartbreaking, thought provoking, unforgettable), some proposed changes to our policies and course credits to our admin, others spoke to people they needed to. #learnLAP
A5: My school started implementing sticky note feedback where students and other teachers were able to provide positive and meaningful feedback to work that we displayed in the hallway. This was so gratifying for students and they LOVED reading what others had to say! #learnLAP
A5: I love the eportfolio idea from the book! I also think it would be great to buddy with other classes or invite special guests (principal, sbo, parents, etc) to provide feedback on big projects. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
A5. Panels of community members who view project presentations and give feedback to the students are so much fun. When I taught the IB Personal Project, my students presented in front of a panel. The students dressed up and really loved showing others their passions. #learnlap
Yes! I kept a weekly blog last year that let parents know not only about what we were learning in the classroom, but how we were learning it and the ways in which I was teaching. Parents found this so helpful as they worked with their children at home! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
A4 Feedback is daily—constant “walkabout” conversations is my main source where I check-in on progress and pose ?s for Ss to reflect on. I’m starving for more peer feedback this year. I’ve done gallery walks w/ @PostIt but will use @Flipgrid to make it more personal #LearnLAP
A5: You have to provide clear expectations and guidelines as to what the feedback IS and IS NOT. At the beginning, I provide examples and we work together on coming up with feedback that could be shared with the student. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
A6 Build in opportunities for reflection often, and help Ss create goals and action plans to work towards them. Focus on #growthmindset and helping students be "gritty" #learnlap
A5 we do something called "Learning at the Hands" where students teach their parents a lesson of their choosing. The parent listens and asks questions and it helps the students provide feedback to their parents when they try the lesson. It is great. #learnlap
A6: the game changer in my classroom were these self assessing cups! It took practice but when they start to change the cups on their own it’s simply amazing!! When they are able to fix their own mistakes and change the cup from red to green! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻😁😁 #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP I have students write goals every quarter, monitor their progress through journal reflection & then at the end of the quarter we discuss as a class which goals were met and which ones fell short & why? So together we can help each other write new ones for next quarter
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
A6: Every portfolio has reflective questions sts answer. I also speak with my sts regarding their goal and their progress toward that goal. I encourage them to set smaller goals in order to reach the larger goal if needed #LearnLap
A5: I think that will just take training. Maybe we could invite parents to school and practice with them, provide them with a cheat sheet, explain how the feedback is more helpful than simply providing the right answer or chastising them for incorrect answers. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: How can you enlist the services of students & others (family members, community members, mentors...) to provide meaningful, constructive feedback to our students? Learning improves when we increase the amount & quality of constructive feedback students get! #LearnLAP
A6 early in the year I model reflection with my Ss by reflecting on each lesson with them and we talk about how lesson could be improved! If I expect them to do something I have to make sure they know I’m willing to reflect and grow as well! #LearnLAP
A4: Guided Reading groups give me time with a small group of students to give them instant feedback. I write notes on writing papers instead of assigning a grade on them. We give names to be read on the announcements for awesome feedback. #Learnlap
I started going a Learning Journal with my Ss to do more intentional reflection! It was a game changer for me. I can't wait to do it better next year. #learnlap
A6 Sorry to be redundant (I didn't know the questions!), but I really did love our Growth Reflection Websites. Besides setting goals, reflecting, finding relevance in content & skills, we got to discuss aesthetics, professionalism, writing when not an essay, etc. #LearnLAP
A6 Kids willingly reflect when the expectations are clear and they feel safe to be vulnerable. Student-friendly rubrics and a nurturing classroom culture promote autonomy with reflection and self-initiated corrections #learnlap
A6 Setting goals is so important to encourage personalized learning. Offering students a voice and a choice increases interest and makes learning meaningful. Give them control over their learning. Facilitate monitor and guide while offering help when needed #learnlap
#learnlap Bi-weekly, Ss engage in "Mathacognition": a google doc dialogue with me discussion their emotional association with math/class, their process including successes/struggles, and their path forward. See my blog!
https://t.co/kxGlpHQtO7
A6: One way is I announce: "Metacognition Check" and they give me a thumbs up, down, or sideways based on how they feel they've been doing over the past two minutes. I use the gradual release method in order to help them do this on their own more often over the year. #LearnLAP
A6: Teaching students to reflect on their own learning and progress can be so difficult because many students are driven by feedback from others. We need to teach them through modeling and think alouds. SHOW them what it means and explicitly teach the skills they need. #learnLAP
A7- I published student @Powtoon videos, @BookCreatorApp books, and slide shows on class website. @Seesaw was the best way for us to share work and get feedback- Ss could share with their Ps, or post it on the blog! #learnlap
A6: I teach my students how to write formal reflections after completing important assignments. Here is how we do that: https://t.co/8ytcAnSQZn#LearnLAP
A6: I really love the eportfolio idea but I'm scared I don't have the tech in my building to pull this off. We have 4 carts in our building for 40 30 classrooms. Any low tech alternatives?#learnLAP
A6. We can give Ss short surveys to fill out regarding assig. for reflection purposes, ask them open-ended questions to find the answers your looking for, when they can't meet the deadline, how is the work going to be completed? When? Why? How? Reasons for justification #learnlap
A6: I have discovered the power of a blog. It is an amazing tool for reflection. Do I dare ask my music Ss to start a short blog or vlog? I’m thinking about it...#LearnLAP
A6 #LearnLAP Self advocacy and independence are heightened with a learning environment that sponsors decision making & personal responsibility- ownership & collaboration. The more we let students speak, choose & cooperate the more they feel in control & respectful of the process
A5 First, Ss must be taught how to effectively provide feedback in a way that isn’t threatening or “fluffy” re: their work. Second, we need to teach Ss critical feedback is to help them reach goals with ways that they might not have thought of prior. Revise and Improve! #LearnLAP
A6: Each engagement, Ss are required to complete an e-Portfolio using Slides. We are looking to tweak things up allowing kids to create website demonstrating growth and discoveries, in addition to implementing @Flipgrid for daily work reflections. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
A6 Through Ss Interactive Science Notebooks, I provide written prompts to reflect on. Verbally, I provide questions through 1-1 discussion. I’m looking into adding Genius Hour and incorporating @trev_mackenzie‘s inquiry journal into it for loads of self-reflection. #LearnLAP
A6: Reflection journals are a great tool for Ss to record goals, observations & reflections. I’ve had Ss bring this when we conference and discuss what they’ve written down. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
#learnlap As we wind down and before people leave, consider "following" the many people here that have sparked your imagination, challenged your practice, and affirmed your awesomeness! Grow your PLN with other growth-minded Ts!
I absolutely love them. At the end of the year they read through them and are shocked at their personal growth- again it all comes down to recognizing our potential & growth- this embodies intrinsic motivation #LearnLAP
A7 Authentic audiences are always the way to go!

Anytime we can, we need to! #LearnLAP
A7 They have an authentic audience for many of their language activities, a lot of our work was done collaborating with another class in another country #LearnLAP
A7 - Each of my students maintain a personal ePortfolio throughout the year. They complete tasks, post products, and reflect on their learning process (formally & informally) for real people who read our posts: https://t.co/b4PejWdifY#LearnLAP
A7: often I think presenting to another peer group is thought to be authentic but really it is just fun or a hoop to jump through. We need to get creative and go outside the school to look for audiences! #learnLAP
A7: I love having students make dioramas and change our room into a museum, inviting other grade levels, admin, and district leaders. They deserve to feel “famous” #LearnLAP
A7: My Ss create mini musical performances all the time in general music and when possible, we invite a buddy class to watch. My Ss love these opportunities and find it highly motivating. #LearnLAP
A6: Giving our kids guided time for reflection would be one place to start - I imagine it would look similar to peer reviews, but with their own work instead. #learnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
A7 This year we visited neighborhoods in the city of #Chicago, interviewed residents, and wrote letters to aldermen to advocate for changes to the community, specifically with regard to #affordablehousing and fair housing laws #learnlap#socialjustice#tlap
A7: Each activity students complete we try to share out as much as possible with the leaders in #STEM fields. Mentioning the companies of the projects we are using is also helpful in taking our learning outcomes further. #LearnLAP
#learnlap This year, Ss asked to make videos. So for their final exam entry ticket, they made instructional videos over some topic that they believed they could explain well for next year's class! The results were so-so, but the feedback Ss gave ME will make it better next year!
A6: Model, model, model! I've used red, yellow, green cards or thumbs up/thumbs down. I ask ss how do you think you're doing? How could you improve? What did you do really well? What part was hard/easy? Why? Lots qs and guiding until they get used to it. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: We want to teach students to be metacognitive, use executive functioning skills & not always rely on others to monitor their learning. How do you encourage students to reflect, self-assess, and monitor their progress? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP My favorite- students write and illustrate children’s books on cells and we go next door to our feeder elementary school and students read them to the 1st graders and then donate them to their class libraries
#learnlap This year, Ss asked to make videos. So for their final exam entry ticket, they made instructional videos over some topic that they believed they could explain well for next year's class! The results were so-so, but the feedback Ss gave ME will make it better next year!
A7: My sts have an authentic audience when they complete a science fair project b/c judges, parents, and anyone online can see it. They really want to perform well. I want to create a blog that will give them more opportunities for an authentic audience #LearnLap
A7 We are moving toward digital portfolios next year for all of our students, I hope to have my students use theirs often to show their learning and hopefully engage others to give us feedback. #LearnLAP
A7. I preach authenticity. That is the "a" in #PEAT, an ideology I'm developing. Students need to have global conversations, touch what they are learning, and find purpose in what they do. Authenticity breeds deeper engagement and meaningful learning. #learnlap
A7. Authentic audiences are the way to go! Knowing that Parents and community will see the work that they do because it's displayed through pics on social media, encourages them, coll w/ one another, and working together! #learnlap
A6: I get feedback from Ss on my materials/structure and why it worked/didn’t & adapt to show them reflection is valuable. I’ve started asking them to justify how they show they or the other S mastered something; also giving them standards & asking to explain how met. #LearnLAP
#learnlap In the past I made three cards on a ring-green was I am good, yellow I am finding this hard, red I need help- as kids worked they could flip to the color and I would know who needed me
A7 authentic audiences can be reached through blogs podcasts shared Docs shared slides a collaborative @padlet@flipgrid discussions peer feedback publishing and sharing written pieces through @PenpalSchools or #GridPals#learnlap
A7 #LearnLAP I also love the superhero stories they write-the culmination of our human body unit. They share these with other classes & some create stop motion videos/cartoons as well. Authentic audience- because they are very personal & creative & they are excited to share
A7: Ss take snapshots or record verbalizations & share with Ss & Ps they know someone will see/hear & I do feel they’re motivated by that. In our building we do PBL per quarter & many times that is shared with other classes, GL & Ts & they want to share their best #LearnLAP
A7 A large goal of mine this up coming year is to create more opportunities for my students to showcase their learning! If they see their work is appreciated it can serve as a great motivator! I always know I can #TeachBetter#LearnLAP
1/2 A7: My seniors had to write a children's book for our onsite preK. They had to pick a stage of development and use traits specific to that age. The kids loved this. #learnlap
A7 - My students post their completed Passion Projects on our classroom website & I tweet out requests for comments, suggestions, and compliments! A true authentic audience! Motivates them to revise & try their best! https://t.co/gIvYAiNi0m#LearnLAP
A7: We do a lot of reader's theater sessions in other classrooms and they perform in different grade classrooms. Also we do have great 4th grade projects throughout the year that we perform for the community. Ss really love performing ad talking to someone besides me.#LearnLAP
A7 #LearnLAP Mystery Skype, podcasts on YouTube or @CanvasLMS for review for other students, GT sharing with Academic and vice-versa seeing new perspectives
A7: For our coding projects and Black History month wax museum community members and parents came in. Ss loved presenting their work! It was very motivating for them to know people were coming especially to see their projects and learn from them. #LearnLAP
A8: I do my best to have a lot of mini conferences w/ Ss about what’s stopping them from doing their best in music. Together the S and I set plans in place to help the S find success. I do my best to teach the social skills the S is missing. #LearnLAP
2/2 A7: My 10th graders nominte a T for T of the year. The audience is our principal, and she actually gets all the letters. Ss were allowed to nominate Ts this year, so the letter helped to show them the power of their words. #learnlap
Please join me this week Friday July 20th for #stucentclass 4:30PST/6:30CST/7:30EST just before #engagechat This week is all about going Blended classroom
A8: I’ve done ClassDojo, clip charts, and those things can work but my greatest success was this past year: having flexible seating. Allowing them to move around the room has made the biggest difference. If there’s a problem then they know they can move. #LearnLAP
A8 My behavior management plan is...
1. Build relationships and create a growth mindset in my class
2. Create lessons that are student focused, authentic and relevant
If students buy into the culture management becomes easy!#LearnLAP
That would be a really cool project to try this year. We just got a TK class in our building. Can you share your parameters and project guidelines?#learnLAP
Thanks to everyone participating in tonight's #LearnLAP chat! Hope to see you all back next week for more "Learn Like a PIRATE" discussion! We'll be discussing Chapter 5: Responsibility. Have a great week!!!
A8 students should always determine expectations in the classroom and the expectation should be reinforced and posted in the classroom. When students are engaged and the learning is meaningful and authentic classroom management becomes seamless #learnlap
A8 I expect respect, students expect respect, & they respect each other. Even things like, "Excuse me, I have to use the restroom" instead of asking permission. You are a human being. Do what you need to do and be cool about the fact we're doing important things here. #LearnLAP
A8 - I'm SO fortunate to have truly well-behaved students who respect each other, our school and me. But we still sometimes need feedback on our behavior. First, I give a warning. Next, a "behavior point". Finally, a Work it Out: https://t.co/S2GF5LvAnB#LearnLAP
As #LearnLAP wraps up, I'd like to invite everyone to #PEAT (passionate, engaging, authentic teaching) chat August 6th 12 to 1230 pm EST. I am keynoting on the same topic and want your help to make this a global conversation.
A7: We definitely need to do this more often at my school. This year, our 4th graders created a “Living Museum” where they dressed as and presented information about a prominent historical figure to parents, teachers, and other students. It was great! #learnLAP
A8- Class meetings really helped this year. Ss reflected daily on what went well and what didn't go well. I found they talked out many of the issues themselves. Our main rule was Respect others and #ChooseKind We talked what this 👀 and 👂 like. #learnlap
A8 - Our only classroom rule these days is "Be Respectful and Responsible." These posters are displayed in our classroom at the front of the room. #LearnLAP
A8: I have sts create rules for our class. This gives them responsibility to abide by their own rules. When the rules are violated, sts are quick to remind the st of the rules #LearnLap
Thanks to everyone participating in tonight's #LearnLAP chat! Hope to see you all back next week for more "Learn Like a PIRATE" discussion! We'll be discussing Chapter 5: Responsibility. Have a great week!!!
Monday, 7/23/18 at 7pm Central - #LearnLAP.
A7: Free Speech Poetry Slam, Podcast discussions, written debates are some of the authentic audiences where they get feedback in various ways. They seem to all be motivating. Students have guidelines for what discussion and feedback “look like”. #LearnLAP
A8: I’ve done ClassDojo, clip charts, and those things can work but my greatest success was this past year: having flexible seating. Allowing them to move around the room has made the biggest difference. If there’s a problem then they know they can move. #LearnLAP
#learnlap We write expectations and goals as a class. Management I place a lot in their hands- self-regulation and responsibility with mindfulness strategies and we talk a lot about respectful intentions & interactions-a student driven classroom needs student centered strategies
#learnlap There are no rules, no prescribed discipline. I don't "manage" anyone or a room.
Appeal to the better natures. Assume Ss want to be there and flourish. The detractors quickly learn that they are letting themselves down. Welcome them back with a smile.
A8: We spend time at the beg establishing rules, expectations, routines & procedures. We do team & class building activities. We make necessary revisions as needed. If things are clear then there can’t be any surprises. I often find Ss just want to know what to expect #LearnLAP
