A:1 Funding... but I know the Michigan Board of Education is also going to be influenced with the change. It could impact testing, 3rd grade reading law... so much #memspachat
A1: I totally agree with @SSpickard and think mental health should be a front runner! I l'd ove to see a focus on SEL moving forward... just for starters... #MEMSPAchat
A1: Focus on career ready students. Career ready could be college bound, doesn't have to be. ALL students should be career ready not necessarily college ready #memspachat

Negativity is never the answer but they use negative adds because they work. I would have to dig that research up, but if I’m remembering it properly… When candidates throw mud, we don’t like it, but some of that mud sticks #MEMSPAchat
Would it help to pay substitutes more money?
What about welcoming substitutes with a free lunch and then checking in on them during the day to show they are valued.

A3: Allow retired teachers to work in our schools without penalty! Legislators have blocked the opportunity for those who wish to come back to the classroom and guest teach as retirees! #memspachat
A3: We feel the shortage multiple times a week if not daily. Making it easier for retirees to come back would help as well as increased pay. #MEMSPAchat . We try and give perks when we can. Some districts give stipends when they sub 10, 15, or 20 times in a month.
A3: Yes, at times. Blessed to have some amazing subs that want to be in our building. Blessed to have teachers that arrange in advance. It is really felt in the unforeseen absences that put us in a bind. We have to work to bolster T-ed programs & support subs.

#memspachat A3. We are definitely feeling the crunch with substitutes. We are trying to get more student interns, and we use building subs, but still cannot fill all our needs.
A3: if we have paras in our buildings that work with our kids daily they are often more qualified and effective than a sub. Let them get sub pay for the day if it’s more, which it likely is. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I think everyone is feeling it, and I think the solution is to hire a few full-time employees with benefits to be subs for any position in the district. They can sub for a teacher, bus driver, Secretary, food service, custodian, or aide on any given day. #MEMSPAchat
A3: For sure. We felt it today! We were short one sub. Staff and students all are impacted. Here is a perfect time for that magic wand!

Why do some leaders resist coaching?
#MEMSPAchat
A:3 All subject areas need to be on the critical shortage list so we can bring teachers back @rewiredprinK2 . This is a funding supply and demand issue. We need more teachers and substitutes, so we need to pay more to attract more. #memspachat
A3 I’ve had to fill in due to sub shortage several times. Goes along way with staff and keeps me humble and keeps everything in perspective not to mention I have the best kids in the world. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat How could we support an additional FTE as an emergency sub and focused math/reading support? We need HQ educators in those spots...S and building success, learning, and scores rely on it.
A4: It takes a great deal of courage to be vulnerable and be open to coaching. Sadly, many leaders operate from a center of fear and insecurity. #MEMSPAchat
YES!!! It’s the worst ever in the 12 years I have been a principal. I don’t have all the answers but we need to make this position as important as the real teacher. I wonder if people just don’t feel valued enough to want to do this work. Let’s make them feel valued. #memspachat

A4: I have no idea! @debbiemcfalone has been such a blessing! It doesn't matter how much experience we have, it's always great to have a support, someone to push us, and even question what we do. Some people are afraid to be vulnerable in leadership. #MEMSPAchat
A4: It takes a great deal of courage to be vulnerable and be open to coaching. Sadly, many leaders operate from a center of fear and insecurity. #MEMSPAchat

A4: Sometimes it’s hard to ask for help, to stretch your thinking to see things differently. BUT once you open that door, you model reflection and growth! #memspachat
A4: Best question of the night! I like to say that @sisdphelps is my personal coach. As leaders, we are continuously coached by the experts we surround ourselves with. Managers resist coaching. #MEMSPAchat
100% Agreed! It's sometime hard to ask for help, but the outcome is so amazing!! When we work together we can accomplish greatness! I think the best leaders are the ones who ask for help/input/suggestion etc from other! #BetterTogether#MEMSPAchat
A4: It takes a great deal of courage to be vulnerable and be open to coaching. Sadly, many leaders operate from a center of fear and insecurity. #MEMSPAchat

A4: Being able to be reflective as a leader and to work with a coach is HUGE!! We all can learn so much from those around us. #MEMSPAchat If you have not had Leadership Matters it is the best place to start! @Cohort7@debbiemcfalone@rewiredprinK2
A4) Objectively receiving feedback can be tough- yet so with it. But someone who works you and helps you strategize is amazing! I have a running coach and it turned my running around! #MEMSPAchat
Who can call themselves a leader and sit and provide “coaching” when we aren’t willing to sit in the other seat ourselves. We are better together! #MEMSPAchat
A4: Many reasons. Sometimes the leader is resisting the coach rather than the coaching. There needs to be a productive working relationship between the coach and coachee. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I think it is directly connected to the freedom for mistake making in your district. If you're feeling the heat, it's natural to access your survival instincts. I've been blessed to have some AMAZING mentors! #MEMSPAchat
A4: Administrators who resist coaching definitely do not have a Growth Mindset. We have to model continual learning and help us be the BEST we can be! #memspachat
A4 Pride, ego are the easy answers but I’d also assume many do not have the access or opportunity to coaching perhaps even district support? 🤷♂️ #MEMSPAchat
A4: Leaders put a lot of sweat & passion into their work, so it can difficult to have someone critique their tremendous efforts. Also, leaders work in silos of isolation, so it is a challenge to embrace a coach who does not understand the leader's context or job scope.#memspachat
A:4 This is a good question, related to Ben's Podcast last week... Principals (in our minds) are not supposed to be vulnerable, when we all are, all the time. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I learn the most from coaches who are opposite of me. I want to learn from those who think differently than I do. Agree with @debbiemcfalone, it takes the willingness to be vulnerable #MEMSPAchat
A4) I have been mentored and coached by some amazing people. Having someone to bounce ideas, seek advice, have another set of eyes, .... greatest gift ever! Being open helps us grow. Accept this gift, and be that gift to others. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I learn the most from coaches who are opposite of me. I want to learn from those who think differently than I do. Agree with @debbiemcfalone, it takes the willingness to be vulnerable #MEMSPAchat
A5: If you don't find mentors/coaching, you are being selfish to your students, your staff, your community, to our profession, and to yourself. It really a matter of committing to being your best for those you serve. Period.
#haveagrowthmindset#beYOURbestself#MEMSPAchat
A5: The role of a true coach should bring about reflection, awareness, extend your thinking, cause innovation and creativity .... everyone can only grow from that experience. #memspachat
A5: Coaches have already walked the path. They know twists and turns. The roadblocks, detours, and dead ends. They can help divert us away from them or help us forge a new path of our own. #MEMSPAchat
A5:) You night learn something new, networking, brainstorming new ideas, identify areas of need, get help with prioritizing needs, fresh perspective, vent, opportunity for much needed reflection...I feel like I could go on and on and on #memspachat
A5: I really grow from deep discussions that challenge my thinking! Whether it's your first year or 20th, we're all just trying to get better :) #MEMSPAchat
A5: Working with a coach provides an outside view of our leadership. Are we actually doing what we say? It also provides us better tools we can use to coach our staff. #MEMSPAchat
A5 B/c when you are done learning you're done leading. You can be the leader in an educational institution if you're done learning yourself! #memspachat
A5: Support, collaboration, putting myself in the Learning Zone, reflection, observation, all leads to improvement and growth. Who wouldn't want that! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Growth and change do not happen without moving out of one's comfort zone. Coaches can foster transformational learning opportunities and move leaders to greater potentials. #MEMSPAchat
A5 B/c when you are done learning you're done leading. You can be the leader in an educational institution if you're done learning yourself! #memspachat
#memspachat A5: A good coach picks you up when you are down, challenges you when you need it, and supports you when you think you have taken on more than you are ready for.

A5: Growth and change do not happen without moving out of one's comfort zone. Coaches can foster transformational learning opportunities and move leaders to greater potentials. #MEMSPAchat
A5: In a @Think_Collab training this summer it was stated, "...teaching/leading on an island promotes mediocrity." We as leaders need to demand greatness from ourselves and to do that, we must grow and learn from others! Moving out of our comfort zone! #MEMSPAchat
A:5 Maybe think of it as a mentor. When I was a new principal, I met people at the conferences that really helped me develop from our conversations: Chuck, Susan, Tonya, and too many more to say ...at NAESP...@shepishere - #memspachat
A6: Do your best to create a safe environment where they don't feel it's an "I got you" but rather "I am here to help you" mentality. #MEMSPAchat#TrustTakesTime
Ditto. Too many quality leaders doing quality things for us not connect with those right in front of us!
#MEMSPAchat IS ONE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY FOR THIS.
A6: It’s about the process and the conversation. Don’t jump to assume, listen and have the conversation. We ALL grow a little at a time through positive coaching & leadership. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Evaluating teachers is part (and just a part) of an ongoing process/conversation. It's not solely limited to the time between a pre- and post-observation. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Spend the first two months stepping into all classrooms for 15 minutes, followed by a brief face to face specific praise, and a probing question. BOOM! #MEMSPAchat
A6: Always focus on the strengths of the teacher and build from there toward the teacher's goals for self-improvement. Evaluate like a coach, and model a growth mindset yourself. #memspachat
A6: Worry about growth over a checklist of indicators. If a teacher is continously improving then their students will see the model and do the same. Reward growth over catching what is 'wrong' #memspachat
A6: Have high expectations for your people and support their growth as if it were your own. Expectations+Support=positive and successful relationship #MEMSPAchat
A6: You cannot be the coach and the evaluator. For teachers the process needs to be separate or it gets too muddy. Focus on providing evidence and feedback and a plan of action for growth for all teachers. It is a two way process #MEMSPAchat
A6: It’s about the process and the conversation. Don’t jump to assume, listen and have the conversation. We ALL grow a little at a time through positive coaching & leadership. #MEMSPAchat
A6: I’m not an admin yet, but I would say it’s important to get on top of it, stay on top of it, and remember that these teachers are busting their tails daily. When offering feedback be honest, offer support, and remind them that you so value having them on your team #memspachat
A6: My biggest piece of advice for a new administrator is to go on walk-throughs with another administrator in your district. Talk about what you see. It is important that you calibrate your lens to district expectations. #memspachat
A6: Figure our how to muddle through the system in order have thoughtful conversations with true, valid, non-threatening, growth feedback for your staff. #memspachat
A6: Leave the evidence collector back in the office. Just sit in a classroom and observe. Take it all in. What are kids learning? Why are they learning it? How will they know that they have learned it? #MEMSPAchat
Great Idea! The specific praise shows authenticity. Also, focusing on the positive earlier on will make the challenging/thought-provoking conversations easier later on! #MEMSPAchat
A6: I am still working on this. My advice is to be patient. Remind the staff it's about growth. Then remind them again. Then live it. Then remind them again that this is about growth. #thestruggleisreal#MEMSPAchat
Question 7
Big Issues in Education
Trauma is particularly challenging for educators to address because kids often don’t express the distress they’re feeling in a way that’s easily recognizable.
What can educators do to support their students and/or colleagues?
#MEMSPAchat
A6. Don't wait for the final evaluation to talk about the good and what areas you think they can grow in. How you present it is key. Be sure to complement them on the good and ask questions to understand why on some things before rushing to judgment. #MEMSPAchat
A6) Be visible, build relationships, listen, lead with the positive, Coach up and build belief. Frequent visits with frequent feedback. One step at a time. Build an amazing team. #MEMSPAchat
I agree! being present in a classroom goes a long way. It can definitely create tension when an admin is focusing on a screen/writing in a notebook the whole time while in the classroom #MEMSPAchat
Great point, Vicki. The system can be complex and confusing, but don't lose sight that the ultimate goal is to help each of your teachers get better. #MEMSPAchat

Trauma is particularly challenging for educators to address because kids often don’t express the distress they’re feeling in a way that’s easily recognizable.
What can educators do to support their students and/or colleagues?
#MEMSPAchat
A6: Approach teacher evals/observations as an opportunity to learn more about the teacher, how they work with their students, their style and personality - that will help you in the future as you move forward to provide feedback and support #memspachat
A7: The most important factor to help students is RELATIONSHIPS!!! It is imperative for each child in a building to have a strong connection with at least one adult. #memspachat
A7: Those schools that have the most success at being trauma sensitive are those who start with the adults. Taking care of adult trauma, sensitivity, issues first ensures that we have positive mindsets when we are addressing our children and their trauma. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Build meaningful, open, respectful, loving, family-like, safe, relationships with ALL people who set foot in your school/community. “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.” #MEMSPAchat
A7: Children of trauma all respond differently. It is about understanding EACH child and brainstorming and knowing not all ideas are going to work and be ready to brainstorm again. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I am thrilled to share that our new sup felt the SEL and trauma needs of our Ss (and Ts who didn’t have extra support). Every single school now has a Behavior Coach who is trained with restorative practices, etc. So proud of @WWCSD#MEMSPAchat

A7: Students, staff and families need to know you care. We need to listen to our colleagues and make sure they are supported. Once the staff are supported the love and support and flow to our students. #MEMSPAchat Training and conversations are key.
A7: Become more knowledgeable, all of us! It's not just a EI/SPED issue. Every staff member must know how to best support a struggling student with trauma, anxiety, etc. #memspachat
A7: This is such an important issue/question. While shootings in schools have garnered tons of attention, youth suicide is a much larger issue and far more insidious https://t.co/hGVLhRB46Q#MEMSPAchat
A7: Don’t judge their mistakes - rather seek to understand why. Ask ‘what happened?’ and then listen. Then empathize. Then support. Meanwhile be their advocate among other staff. This is hard as behavior feels personal. Don’t take it personal. #memspachat
A7: Listen. Learn. Model. We have to build relational capacity with each other, our students, and our families. NOT KNOWING is a big part of the challenge. If we KNOW, or can at least recognize signs, we/our students have a fighting chance to increase our impact.
#MEMSPAchat
A7: Teachers need to be able to support one another as their hearts stretch to support their students - and to remember that self-care is not selfish, they need an opportunity to rest and recharge to come back after it each day #memspachat
A7: All students and staff would benefit from teaching and facilitating mindfulness strategies. Educators need to tune into the feelings of students and colleagues. Take time to simply ask, "Is everything okay?" #memspachat
BTW, love your name Derek! Leader of the people! It's about balance isn't it? What do we miss when we are not present and observing with eyes, ears, mind, and heart? #MEMSPAchat
A7: We need to start with Staff. If we can build the capacity of staff it will filter down to Ss. Ultimately becoming part of the culture of the school! #MEMSPAchat
A7: tough one. Seems like some many kids are coming with trauma issues and there is no one way to help each kid. Share what has worked with each other and give an ear and a shoulder when needed. #MEMSPAchat

As leaders, what would you do if student data consistently shows a decline over multiple years? What would be your first two potential strategies?
#MEMSPAchat
A8.. Is it in all areas? Across the board or targeted? Look for what has changed since the decline. What things that we can control have changed any why. If nothing has changed what can we change to reach Ss in new way that will correct the decline. #MEMSPAchat
A8: With the School Improvement Team, I would first look for trends and if there are any subgroups to identify. Then I would drill down more deeply to see common curricular areas of weakness. #memspachat

A:8 First, is the decline significant or just something that is trending with the state? The test changes and those variations change student scores. With that said... You should never ride a dead horse. Use the data openly at school improvement and design/retrain. #MEMSPAchat
A8: Make sure all the data says the same thing (triangulate). Next, check the causes, is it capacity or will of the staff and students to do 'well' on that assessment. Last, make sure you care about the test(s) at hand #memspachat
