#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
I think teachers retain the same rights as most professionals. Many professionals can be reprimanded for certain actions. I’m not sure it’s that different for teachers #edchat
Exactly! I recall my co-operating teacher refraining from teaching anything government/political related until after the election during an election year, just to refrain from giving views #edchat
We have the duty to be role models, which means embody the traits we want to see on kids. So to be the best for the world, we need to think of others first, not our own opinion. #edchat
True. You can never completely eliminate bias from your life, I think that it is more so being aware and keeping your thoughts out of things, and more letting kids explore, and maybe even acknowledging some biases, to let kids know that there is such a thing #edchat

Teachers often are looked to in the same light as an elected official or someone who holds public office. As such they expect us to represent a higher standard. #Edchat
Retired classroom teacher here(2004). If I were still teaching today, I would have been fired by now. Sometimes you just have to draw the line! #edchat
I agree! Everything we do, we have to do with the kids in mind. Are we setting a good example? Are we doing things correctly? As a teacher, you're always "on stage" #EdChat
Hi, Harvey in Cheney, WA. Definitely we give up certain rights, but it is for the greater good--the honor & privilege of helping S reach their dreams. Which rights? We have a curr. We need to be eclectic teachers, not just use one instructional style to meet S needs #edchat
Wow! The social media conundrum. Teachers need to be especially careful with what they post on social media, but elected officials, not as much. #edchat
I'm not sure sometime schools are considered a business, when convenient! Other times not! We are not a business & it cant be run like a corporation! #EdChat
I agree. This is a very good point. It's important to not only speak but also show our students what we are saying we actually believe. It is also important to be conscious on if what we are saying is encouraging or discouraging dialogue. #edchat
I think even still, there is a bit of censorship that some have when putting things on the internet, just for job reasons, as might some other professionals. But social media is more of their outlet to opinions #EdChat
Great question. I say yes, there are. If not given up, they are at least limited. Limits on speech and limits on religious views are quite common, for example. #edchat
That is the problem. Usually "public" opinion decides. That one parent who decides he/she doesn't like you. That one administrator who finds you a "threat" #edchat
When I step in front of my kids I cease to have a personal opinion ... I am teaching them to be unbiased and I need to model that ... it really matters in Social Studies world #edchat
Society? There is no real rule to what you can/should say in the classroom, however it's some of those given things. You know when something's wrong, as parents will be all over you #EdChat
I guess I worded that wrong. I don't necessarily believe we should go against our opinions but in some situations we should not express them so we do not persuade our students opinions. #edchat
Re classroom identity vs SM identity, you are always better off with consistency between the two. Neither are appropriate for blowing off steam! #edchat
As teachers because we hold such a public position and are susceptible to outcry people will often hold us to a standard they themselves can't uphold. #Edchat
I think that this is more universal. Sometimes expressing our personal opinions to our students can persuade our students opinions and by not expressing them fully it would avoid that. #edchat

True! Children need to be educated on bias; what it is, different biases that may be out there. But then there is as you put it BIAS, and that's those things that you leave in the back of your head #EdChat

I’ll chime in my two thoughts. As an out 🏳️🌈 married woman, I am honest about who I am at school. I’m myself, real, honest. On the other hand, I do not publicize my religious or political views. Instead, I teach the students to think, to critically think. #edchat
When I think of "good" role models I would say that a teacher needs to be a person who exhibits the quality of open- mindedness in their classroom. #edchat
Why aren’t more students creating vlogs about the college application/acceptance process? I feel like (if done right) it could be a huge success. Thoughts? #edchat#collegechat
As a T in ES and P of MS, I think it also depends on age of Ss. Ts in my mostly minority school told Ss who they voted for in '16, and it led to a lot of hurt Ss. #Edchat
It is the responsibility of a teacher to be a good role model for their students. Teachers don't need to give up their rights to in order to teach but they do need to think about what they are doing and if they would want their students to do it #edchat
Yes and this can be tough, especially when you have elementary students who are so excited about their religious faith. It's hard to walk the fine line between respecting it and quashing it sometimes. #edchat
You are right about that. It does depend on the age of the Ss. I wouldn't tell ES or MS students about my political beliefs, but I would tell them about the fact that I accept ppl from different backgrounds. #edchat
Yes, yes, yes! @SteveWestly understands how #edtech works! Teachers need training and support in order to effectively use technology in the classroom. Just giving a kid an iPad isn't an effective way to utilize learning technologies.
#edchat
This article gives a great reminder that simply throwing technology into a classroom does not equate to success. Training and planning are key.

Regarding bias, I think we all get caught in what I call "Narrative Traps." We look for confirming theories as Kahneman calls it "Confirmation Bias." As teachers we must try to break out of our traps, limited POV, to help students see windows, not walls. #edchat
I don't think we give up individual rights when we walk in the classroom! We teach students to think! There are some restrictions, but I believe we have tremendous freedoms to teach! #EdChat
It's awesome that you can be who you are! But I love the way that you have taken the idea of being free and having your own ideas to having students think, critically think #EdChat
Well, I’ve got multiple Twitter accounts, but no Facebook. My social media connections are either about education or my passion for gardening. I keep the details of my personal life private, but that’s because I want the classroom to be about the kids, not me. #EdChat

I completely agree! Teachers are entitled to their rights and opinions just as much as anyone else. But as teachers we need to teach students how to form their own opinions and how to exercise their rights and freedoms in the world. #edchat

Two questions:
1. What do you want your legacy to be? That is your purpose.
2. How will you build that legacy today? That is your mission.

One of the greatest things are the colleagues you meet along the way & the friendships that develop from planning, chatting, & working with #students together. Thx for coming to my #IPFW class & sharing your experiences with my novice teachers! @IPFW@jaimebrunson1#edchat
I don’t feel a disconnect here in CA. In my 5th grade we just competed a Unit on Civil Rights, while reading the bio of Harriet Tubman. We also just finished our “Walk Through the American Revolution.” My students learned about rights, equality, boycotts, protests, etc. #Edchat
Good point about S age. When I started teaching 5th grade, 100 years ago (lol) two students in the back of the room were arguing. I asked "about what?" They said, "Mr. Alvy, is there a God?" I was a 21 yr old teacher! I just told them to ask their parents!! Whew! #edchat
As a T in ES and P of MS, I think it also depends on age of Ss. Ts in my mostly minority school told Ss who they voted for in '16, and it led to a lot of hurt Ss. #Edchat

Early in my career... a student was being expelled for being pregnant. I could not stand by and let that happen. Fought to change. IMHO there're times when we mustn't remain silent. Thoughts? Have you had similar experience? @DennisDill@elena_SF_CA#edchat@teach2468
In the push for academics and such lately, I think teachers forget about this. While yes, you're not there to be their friend, they need to be able to see their teacher as a human being, and someone with whom they can relate to #EdChat
Key with PBL, start with pedagogy, not "activity." What are the objectives? how will the "work" be assessed? Grant Wiggins reminded us, if students are going to build a miniature roller coaster, they should learn something about physics. #edchat
As teachers we need to make the effort to connect with our students. Although it may be hard we HAVE to find a way to connect if we don't it only makes our jobs that much harder. #edchat
Or TV shows, teen lit, etc...safe zones around what they like. When they know you talk about what they know/like it bridges the harder, deeper convos #edChat

Ultimately it's about the learning experience. Kids will learn more if I ask them about the traits of good leaders and why they feel those are traits of leaders than if I just narrate to them which leaders I disapprove or approved of. #edchat
That’s good to hear. I’ve got a Giants sweatshirt always hanging over my chair (it gets really cold in Daly City sometimes) & I also wear a cozy fleece 49er jacket once in a while. But secretly, I love to follow the Kansas City Chiefs. They’re my favorite underdogs. #Edchat

It is important to stick up 4 American principles of diversity, tolerance, a nation of immigrants. Do not be shy about these ideals. Lincoln said, "All must have an equal chance." That is a value we have to pursue as principals & teachers. The Am. Dream begins in schools. #edchat
“You may not be able to control everything, but within the four walls of your classroom, you can control almost anything.“ #EdChathttps://t.co/wT1dvC3GA6
Yes! You remember those teachers from your education who did special things to help their students to relate to them/things like that. I had a teacher who made a glasses club for kids with glasses, cause she remembered being outcast for that as a kid #EdChat
I love this idea! Having students really dive into the character traits of leaders and analyzing the "why" of whether they are good leaders are not is so much more effective than spewing your own personal ideas and opinions. #edchat
I've not had that kind of experience, but I do go to admin when I see things that I think are wrong for Ss. Kind of feel like a troublemaker, at times. #Edchat

When my daughter was in 2nd gr, she was pulled out of class to receive #reading support. Sadly, while she was out of the room, she missed first teach of #math instruction. Can you guess what happened? #coteach is best. #inclass support first! Pull out as a last resort #edchat
Great point. So begin with your family, your neighbors, local leaders, historic figures like MLK, Lincoln, Gandhi, Mandela, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, modern folks like President Obama, Senator McCain. YOU decide on who is distinguished. #edchat
From the heart AND mind. Students need effective teachers who know the curr. and instruction, have high expectations for EACH student, and LOVE working with students. #edchat
Engaging, fun, and REAL. Want my Ss to know that I SEE them as people first! If we need to spend class time working out a prob., that's what we do! #Edchat

If the leadership of the school, and colleagues believe in democratic values, not too much is given up. A school should be an example of a democratic institution. Democracies, of course, do not support anarchy (although the faculty lounge can get a little crazy!!) #edchat
Teachers are put on the same stage as politicians and celebrities where they have to watch what they say. In the days of social media all over, our words can be taken severely out of context. Reputations can be ruined all from a misspoken or mistaken sentence. #edchat
I feel once you become a teacher you are definetly giving up some rights. You can't post whatever you want on social media and you have to be careful how you act in public #edchat
As teachers, we ask students to write stories, but why not tell them? Story building leads to live telling. Share out loud. Don’t sit quietly; create spaces out loud for students and their peers https://t.co/Ll2POMDoM3#edchat#engchat#literacy
November 19th is the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Consider sharing the values of the document w/ your faculty & students. It's a great reminder about rights we DONT give up as teachers. See my ASCD piece on 8 teaching tips on the address. https://t.co/vrBdk3rHtB#edchat

I think many teachers forget just how important they are as role models to students. Sometimes they're the only positive role models a child has. #edchat
Over 30 states have used the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework to inform instruction for their social studies classes. Inquiry-based instruction is on the rise. #c3framework#sschat#edchat
More teachers are turning to technology to lead student learning. But is it effective? Matt Harris argues that in order for EdTech to work, it has to become a part of a school’s DNA. https://t.co/4uCxm7LLYR@MattHarrisEdD#FETC#EdTech#EdChat
It's great that you are taking a stand for kids. Cynicism, bullying, low expectations for students, racism, a deficit model, all hurt students so it is our JOB to fight for students, teachers and principals that foster pro-student values. #edchat
