Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.

Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
Q.1 Spend time in every classroom connecting with everyone I see. Make sure students know I am thrilled to see them and have missed them dearly. #LeadLAP
Lifelong impressions begin and end with relationships. How are you intentional about connecting with each student. Each student won’t like you, each student can know you care about them. #LeadLAP
A1 Moments that have a lifelong impression are best created by really knowing your students and staff. I'll be greeting all students on the first morning with my jammy pack playing tunes and then visiting every classroom. #LeadLap
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A1: my 1st day back im conducting a substitute orientation & mentor team forum, I’m thinking of doing the #oneword challenge with both groups, mine is #gratitude#LeadLAP
I call these lasting impressions BigWOWs - they make a big impact in small ways. We change the setting of the classroom, the entrance to the school, etc. Last January the kids came back to a "red carpet event" at Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy #leadLAP
A1: Last year, upon returning from winter break, we rolled out our Houses. Can’t reveal what the surprise is for this year since I don’t want to ruin the surprise 😉 #LeadLAP
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A1: Get down on a kid’s eye level. Stay there and listen. Let them go on and on, at least this first day, and hang on every word. They have so much they want to tell you! #LeadLAP
When I was a school principal, I wrote a welcome back note to all teachers & staff-take to each classroom/workspace & leave the note w water & snacks. I would deliver before the 1st day back so when they walked into their space, the note and goodies were waiting. #LeadLAP
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A1. We start our semester with staff PD - so we are making breakfast and eating together followed by staff “get to know you activities” - always trying to build staff connections and trust. #leadlap
A1: Last year, upon returning from winter break, we rolled out our Houses. Can’t reveal what the surprise is for this year since I don’t want to ruin the surprise 😉 #LeadLAP
A1. Share with them first! You never know if you and other students had some sort of shared experience you can talk about. Growing up, I loved knowing that I may have done the same thing as my teacher over a break. #leadlap
A1: Last year, my Ss rolled into my classroom to discover a severe lack of desks and a lot of #flexibleseating . This year I have big #gamification plans, and I get to do a transformational PD session the Friday the 4th! Gonna be epic! #LeadLAP
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A1: We create moments that make a lifelong impression on our community by truly KNOWING our community. It's all about relationships. If we know our Ss & colleagues, then we know their values & what speaks to them. Show others you care. Listen. https://t.co/7Bv59WKYx9#leadlap
A1. The lifetime impressions people share with me decades later usually involve helping them turn their passionate dreams into a reality. Lean back and listen intently when someone shares these with you.
Ask, "What can I do to help you achieve this?" #LeadLAP
A1: As the Tech Director, 1st day back I greet the staff and ask what new tech they have and offer time to listen to their questions and help them get set up. #leadlap
A1: Remember moments > minutes! Get out and about into classrooms and hallways. Sit down with kids at lunch and check in with them. Move from "How is your day going?" to "What is the best thing you've learned today?" Share your enthusiasm daily. Be a constant for kids! #LeadLAP
Being present in interactions with a student or staff member. Listening with your heart, extending grace, and acknowledging that person. #Sawubona#ISeeYou#LeadLap
A1: I want to let every student and staff member know that I’m glad to see them again and that I missed them. I’ll be in every classroom to tell them. #LeadLAP
Starting the new year with red carpets, disco balls, music, blow horns, and lots of confetti! Celebrating each S and their future. Do a countdown w/ popping balloons and inside is a team activity, self reflect or goal setting! Remind Ss their awesome #leadlap
A1: Leaving a lasting impression on Ss is so important...I want all 700+ Ss at my school to see me and other adults having fun! They should know that working as an educator is a blast!! #LeadLAP
A1: I believe in the importance of the everyday moments. Being at the door with a smile, greeting students by name, sharing my enthusiasm for what I do. #LeadLAP
Q1: To really make a school a community everyone needs to have a voice & a space to use their voice!! We ask what our Ss, Ts, Fams, & Community want/need! The empowerment comes by delivering on these wants bc when your voice is heard, you're empowered to use it again! #LeadLAP
A1: We kick off our 1st day back with a New Year’s balloon pop!! Ss select their #oneword for the new year, we set a class goal for showing kindness, toast to the new year, & end w/ confetti everywhere!! It sets the stage for an EPIC 2nd semester! #LeadLAP
A1: Being intentional in showing gratitude for everything that goes on in the classroom. Showing T’s and S’s that what’s happening within their walls is super important. Sharing that out to parents and other stakeholders. Being present. #PromoteGreatness#LeadLAP
A1: I plan to talk with my staff concerning our passion. Also make a distinction between the JOB vs. the WORK. The work is were our value resides. #LeadLAP I want to make them feel VALUED.
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
It’s always challenging going back after a break, but being intentionally positive that I have the opportunity to return to great students and staff might help students and staff be excited too! #LeadLap
A1: This semester I’m going to start taking weekly videos of students sharing about themselves, their learning and their dreams to help increase student voice. I also was to spend more time in classrooms and giving feedback to teachers. #LeadLAP
Creating moments is very important. My goal is to make learning a fun experience and to focus on the experience and student interaction and reflection more than standards. #LeadLAP
Think movie theater! Complete with pre-movie trivia over my PD content, movie trailers (also over the PD content), tickets to get in, ushers, and a concession stand with movie treats at the 6 stations with an activity over my, you guessed it, PD content. #LeadLAP
A1: It’s the small moments that make the biggest difference. If you’ve built relationships, and really listened, you will be able to create those small moments daily through individual interactions. Those small moments will lead to the big moments. #leadlap
A1: being authentic in the relationships you build. First day back, resestablish what you’ve been building from fall semester, check in, be authentic, really listen and continue building a relationship that leaves a lasting impression. #LeadLAP
A2 On January 2nd we open our brand new school to students. Ours was torn down and rebuilt. Music will play and students enter a brand new space. Can’t wait! #LeadLAP
A2. This idea was shared on Twitter and I have tweeted it out a couple of times. You have a school Twitter account - create a box where parents, community members and young students share tweets and you add them to your school's tweets. #LeadLAP#voicesheard
A1: Being present in interactions with a student or staff member. Listening with your heart, extending grace, and acknowledging that person. #Sawubona#ISeeYou#LeadLap
A2: Greet them with a smile and « Hello! How are you doing? ». Every time. Before they leave, tell them you are looking forward to seeing them again. #LeadLap
To exceeed expectations we have to do what others won't do. Like taking extra time with parents. Teaching students how to greet others. Making every visitor feel like a part of the school family from the start.
#leadlap
A2 It's vital to treat every student, staff, family member, and visitor as if they are your own family. If you do this for your school, many will feel that we have exceeded their expectations. #LeadLAP
@BethHouf A2: appearance of school, first impression and how they are greeted is key. Making them feel they aren’t “bothering” you, and listening. #LeadLAP
A2: Greet them with a smile and « Hello! How are you doing? ». Every time. Before they leave, tell them you are looking forward to seeing them again. #LeadLap
A2: you cannot exceed someone’s expectations without finding out where the bar sits! That happens with a conversation and not waiting for a problem to arise. #LeadLAP
A2. It’s important that we take time to greet students, staff and families when we have moments and truly listen to them, support them and “be in the moment”. During school day focus energy on people - paperwork can wait after school hours. #leadlap
A2: Sometimes it's simply the little things... a warm smile, getting up to greet people, walking someone to their destination when they don't know where to go. Saying "I'll try to figure it out" rather than "I can't or won't" #LeadLAP
A2: It starts by hiring great people. Making sure those people are all striving for the same thing. We exceed expectations by treating staff like the amazing, hard working people they are. Kids work harder for teachers they like and staff work harder for admin they like! #LeadLAP
A2: Our TV announcements are one of the first things they see when they walk in - I keep them positive & upbeat.
We can always greet with a smile - even the Ss who are habitually late for school. Greet them with an "I'm glad you're here" rather than "Why are you late" #LeadLAP
@BethHouf A2: appearance of school, first impression and how they are greeted is key. Making them feel they aren’t “bothering” you, and listening. #LeadLAP
A2: I've been working on a feedback form for the first 1/2 of the year so I can reflect, check & adjust for the rest of the year. If anyone has one created as a coach, I'd love to see your ideas. #LEADLAP As far as culture, I just listen & see where I can help to make it better.
Q2: Be available to Ss and families-even when it's not convenient. Remember we serve them! Make sure they feel valued and that all of their questions are answered and their concerns addressed. Serve with a smile. #LeadLAP
A1: We want Ss running back into school. The Ss love when the staff is “dressed up”. New Years hats and noise makers are in order for January 2nd. #LeadLAP
Q2: We start by making certain everyone knows we want to be at school!! Greeting everyone by name, giving hugs, saying I Love You, and really listening to all the stories makes everyone feel like part of the family we are! Love is seen, felt, and heard in every action! #LeadLAP
“I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.” -Agatha Christie
#bekindEDU#KidsDeserveIt#tlap#LeadLAP#edchat#satchat#leadupchat#t2t
A2: Greet everyone right away. The minute they walk in the front office, everyone should be greeted with a smile and a warm, positive greeting - no matter the visitors mood. We should be positive and friendly no matter what! #LeadLAP
Starting the new year with red carpets, disco balls, music, blow horns, and lots of confetti! Celebrating each S and their future. Do a countdown w/ popping balloons and inside is a team activity, self reflect or goal setting! Remind Ss their awesome #leadlap
A1) For colleagues, I just created a quick video sharing my 2019 mission, connection. Kicking off the new year, I’m committed to making more memorable moments for Ss AND staff! #leadlap
A1: By being present every moment with my students I feel I am able to create lasting memories and a safe environment for them to experience the content, interact with their peers in a positive way and move forward together! #LeadLAP
A2 I have a coworker who is awesome at remembering almost all of the students' names! I would love to be able to do that. Being mentioned by name makes everyone feel special! #LeadLAP
A2: Focus less on restrictions and more on opportunities. Schools can be bad about scolding people before they’ve ever done ensuring wrong. This sends the wrong tone. Tell them what you WANT them to do. Positive language! #LeadLAP
A2 I adore this idea from @bethhill2829 where she places this outside of her office in order to gain immediate feedback from those she interacts with. SO MUCH better than foolish end-of-the-year surveys that are too vague & rarely address the specific goals a leader has. #LeadLAP
A2: While maintaining a practical emphasis on relational development with all stakeholders, we have limited our instructional design focus to 2 best practices. Every day, we want to improve in those two areas to be better than we were the day before. #LeadLAP
A2: Show them some love! Treating them with love and respect will leaving them wanting to come back and using engaging practices that validate students will help them keep coming back! #LeadLAP
A2: Be welcoming - start with a smile, eye contact, & a heartfelt greeting. Then listen to understand rather than withdrawing mentally to predict where the conversation is going or to start formulating a response. Just listen and reflect empathy. Then do the other stuff. #LeadLap
Probably a 1000 “Strategies” for this (meet at classroom door etc) but I’ve found that simple things such as a quick convo during class change, being visible during lunch duty, supporting extra curricular activities work best. Just be genuine. #LeadLAP

A2: People have different and sometimes conflicting expectations. For me the goal is to make sure others know my vision and values. They may not agree but they will know my decisions always come from a place of caring and believing #LeadLAP
A1: I plan to be intentionally positive and more visible in classrooms. A focus will be on improving culture through modeling and being present. #LeadLAP
I love the One Word challenge! I think we will be chatting about that during our next #PD4uandme ! It's on my list of blog posts to work on in the next few days too. #LeadLAP

A2: at our substitute trainings we offer coffee, water & provide a chromebook, I’m thinking about what else we can do to make a comfortable 3.5 hours?#LeadLAP with Ss & Ts I think in all roles, be prepared, organized, positive, cheerful #gratitude
That's awesome!! We ditched the 'reason for tardy' & instead ask what do you need? Hug, Love, or Peace. The secretary gives kid a hug & tells them how much she loves them. Td knows if kid needs peace for a few minutes before starting the day, or an I love you & hug. #leadlap
A2: Attention to detail! Don't settle for "same ole same ole" and instead, create as many experiences as possible. Look for ways to amp up staff meetings, PD days, and classroom experiences. Don't get into the routine of what's expected. Keep thinking and growing! #LeadLAP
A2: As a leader, provide a stellar experience for your staff. Listen, take care of them, preempt their needs. Model how you want your students & parents treated. Collectively set expectations for how you treat each other as staff and with community #leadlap
A2: Appreciation goes a long way...admin, teachers and students. Let them know you care and appreciate them for who they are and the strengths they offer our school...All are Welcome @FHGES#LeadLAP
A2. The first thing people see when you walk in plays a huge role. I recall going on interviews and seeing how people interacted with each other. Whether it was T's walking into the office or the way the secretaries answered the phone, I could get an idea of the culture. #leadlap
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A2: We can ensure students, staff, and families have stellar experiences by being genuine, passionate, and joyful. When your passion emanates from you, it spreads to others. 🌟💞🌟 https://t.co/ulyJbB3xpf#leadlap
A2: We'll succeed at making people in our school feel at home when we treat them like guests. Subs in our school? Guest Teachers. It's the small stuff that becomes the big stuff. Show them that they matter, that they're welcome, that they belong! Make them feel at home. #leadlap
A2: Everyone in our school community should know that they matter and that we care about them. We need to tell them. We need to show them with our actions, too. #LeadLAP
A2: Focus less on restrictions and more on opportunities. Schools can be bad about scolding people before they’ve ever done anything wrong. This sends the wrong tone. Tell them what you WANT them to do. Positive language! #LeadLAP
A2: Very simply ask our stakeholders what's important to them when they visit campuses. It's essential for us all to remember that people want to be seen, heard, and understood. Many times as a teacher, administrator, and in other roles, I've just listened. #leadlap
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A2: Make everyone feel welcome and a part of our community. Positive communication with families in any form (calls, letters, notes, shout outs, meet at dismissal) along with listening to them and their child shows respect, and that we are a team. #LeadLAP
A1 Last year at this time we implemented Houses, it was amazing. Im headed to the school tomorrow to prep for another surprise. Just keep surprising the Ts and Ss, make it fun. #LeadLAP
A1: We kick off our 1st day back with a New Year’s balloon pop!! Ss select their #oneword for the new year, we set a class goal for showing kindness, toast to the new year, & end w/ confetti everywhere!! It sets the stage for an EPIC 2nd semester! #LeadLAP
A1. Start fresh! Teachers, students, parents, support staff & admin alike press the @NintendoAmerica reset button & embrace the grind of trying to make the world a better place!
#leadlap
A2: I think it’s important to listen to all of those who enter our doors. We learn to lead from multiple perspectives when we listen and respond to questions and concerns from students, staff, and families. #LeadLap
A1. @burgess_shelley just made a comment about how important it is to go out into the community. Create a lengthy list of tons of community functions, add them to a calendar and seek out volunteers to attend this. GREAT connections! Ask, "How can our school support .." #LeadLAP
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A2: Exceed expectations by ensuring each person feels seen and valued. Don't assume you know what they need- ask them and meet them where they are. #LeadLAP
A2: Make time for people when they need you and even when they don't. Ask people how they are doing, stop by to say hello or offer to help just because you can. #LeadLAP
A3: Identify what truly fills my bucket and then balance that with what absolutely needs to be done, in that order. Family, students, and bucket-filling top my list. Paperwork...not so much. #leadlap
Every class, every kid, I walk around and quiz myself with every name-sometimes it’s embarrassing how long it takes me but if I can do it everyone can:) #leadlap
A2 I have a coworker who is awesome at remembering almost all of the students' names! I would love to be able to do that. Being mentioned by name makes everyone feel special! #LeadLAP
A3: This one is really hard for me. I want to “fix” or help everyone else feel better first.
But I think I’m going to get a dog! So many benefits for me! 🐶#LeadLAP
A3 I need to make time for my family and friends and put them first more often. I need to read more and write more. I might also keep my running streak going. #LeadLAP
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A3 My workout routine is changing. I have recently joined a gym and I will have to create a new routine in order to stay consistent. Don't always like working out, but I feel better when I have done it! #LeadLAP
A3. It’s most important to grow your people and that means connecting with them, having compassion and empathy, support and find ways to maximize their strengths (build up, not tear down). #leadlap
A1: Ask students whom they spent their break with instead of where they went or what they got. They LOVE talking about their connections and relationships. Find out what their favorite moment was and you'll find out more about who they are, to better meet their needs. #leadlap
A2: We need to be intentional about the experiences we create from the moment they enter to the moment they leave and every moment in between. We need the whole crew on board! ☠️ #LeadLAP
A2 - First impressions are vital! Enviornment that is soothing and homey Making everyone feel they are imporant and relevant when they walk through the door. Smile, eye contact, and a greeting! #leadlap
A3: making sure to carve out time for my children and myself. No work emails, no work at all...Just being present in the moment with my teenagers. For me, carving out exercise time at least 3 times a week. #LeadLAP
I’m finding that the teachers that struggle with relationships, need a lot of personal growth......#LeadLAP playing a few games day 1 is not the answer😉

A3: My goal is to be intentional about hitting the gym! The ideas never stop but they can be sorted through on the treadmill, or on the rowing machine!! I also have to be intentional about being 'home' when I am home! #LEADLAP
A2: The appearance of your building relays the sense of pride you take in your school. Greeting everyone with a smile and the willingness to assist is great too! #Leadlap
That's awesome!! We ditched the 'reason for tardy' & instead ask what do you need? Hug, Love, or Peace. The secretary gives kid a hug & tells them how much she loves them. Td knows if kid needs peace for a few minutes before starting the day, or an I love you & hug. #leadlap

A3: I carry a lot of guilt in every aspect of my life. I feel guilty when I work at home because I’m not enjoying time with my girls. I also feel guilty when I’m doing something for me because my list at work is long. I HAVE to let the guilt go and take care of me! #LeadLap
We are implementing Jim Knight’s Impact Cycle this year and I feel like I am really learning how to COACH teachers! Culture shift in how a coach is viewed! #leadlap
A2: It’s all about having a welcoming place where people want to be!! I have a student ambassador who greets people that come to our room! We want people to feel like they are wanted in our classroom!! #LeadLAP
I tried to stop by every classroom at the beginning of the day and ask the teacher, "Is there anything I can do for you today?" It didn't take very long and created a sense of working together. #LeadLAP
A2: Make time for people when they need you and even when they don't. Ask people how they are doing, stop by to say hello or offer to help just because you can. #LeadLAP
A2. Spread joy everyday! Have real and crucial conversations when needed. Show you care! Be consistent! #BeTheOne because #kidsdeserveit
Simple statement but be the school where everyone wants to be! @KoutsMHS@KoutsAthletics#leadlap
A3. Great question that I haven't thought entirely about yet! I would love to take time during my prep (last period) to reflect more on the day and how it went. Rather than running around getting things done last minute. #leadlap
A3: This is a hard one for me! I want to do #allthethings all the time! I really need to be more intentional with the time that I need to recharge and relax with my husband, exercise, and socialize with friends, so I can be the best for my students! #leadlap#40cfpln
A2 It’s important to hire the right people and make the right people are at every door welcoming Ss and parents. We also have music going and have our entrance looking nice and welcoming. #leadlap
A3 My self care goals for this year:
1. Regular exercise regimen
2. My wife & I on our #debtfreejourney
3. Family time consisting of "unplugging" from tech - enjoy time with them
4. Reading for pleasure
#LeadLAP
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A3: Taking care of ourselves each & every day will only lead to more productivity, progress, learning, and positive impact in our mission to serve kids, our world, & the future. My self-care includes keeping the Sabbath & daily joyful movement. 💗 #leadlaphttps://t.co/gmNg1qcecg
A3: I want to continue delegating important work. This has the dual benefit of preserving time for work I must do while building leadership capacity in others. #LeadLAP
A3: I want to build some beginning & end of day routines to help me gear up for & shut down from work. My day in the curriculum & instruction department isn’t marked off with a bell schedule; I need to set a structure to shut my mind down from work at the end of the day. #leadlap
Both are so important. I also find clarity on the treadmill! Being present is so important. My goal for 2019 is to redefine “urgent” while I am home! #leadLAP
A3: I’m setting the alarm for 1/2 an hour earlier and taking the dog for a run. Ok, a walk. Let’s be realistic. But it’s time to starting moving more and feeling better. #LeadLAP
A3. SO MANY. There are actually lifestyle changes that I need to make that need to go beyond my usual new year's goal setting. I'm just sitting right now w the changes that I need to make, because when I make the jump, there will be no looking back. #leadlap
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."

A3: Self-care is critical so that we are able to serve others. For me this means taking time to reflect as well as taking moments to truly relax in the evenings or over the weekend. #leadlap
A3: #selfcare was my #oneword last year, but will always be my focus moving forward....goals more exercise & healthy eating, dropping 40 pounds, asking myself, does “this” help me or make me better? #LeadLAP
YES; music sets the mood, doesn't it? I used it a lot as background in the Learning Lab, too. Gary Lamb's music is so soothing b/c it goes with our biorhythms purposefully.

Q2: We are starting the semester with Kagan training to provide our teachers with additional structures to fill their instructional tool box. @KaganOnline training = ENERGIZING! I will support Ts through modeling and allowing time for processing and planning. #LeadLAP
A3: I’ve been focused on getting to the gym and have done a good job of making it 4-5x/wk. after I recover from this procedure I want to get make to that. I’m also trying to be more intentional about doing a regular date night with my wife! #LeadLAP
A3: I want to spend time encouraging and supporting my family. During the crazy times, I will stay connected on Twitter with positive and encouraging people. #LeadLAP
A3. I just adore reading everyone's goals that they are sharing! By writing down these thoughts you have moved past the first step. Now add a date and you will advance past step two! You can do it!! #LeadLAP
A3: Excited to get back into my running routine!! It’s so good for me both physically & mentally! Also, planning to take some “me time” and do new things!! Taking a break every now & then is needed! #LeadLAP#RunLAP
A3 My goal is to join the yoga class at the gym. I already workout and run, but I want to be more flexible & have that down-time to calm my busy mind. @jennifer_burdis inspires me to want to "stretch" myself to get back in it. Thanks, Jen.

A1: Keeping a drawer full of cards (thank you, blank inside, etc.). I use these when dropping by classrooms AND to give students a chance to write a little note to an adult or another student. #leadLAP
A2 It sounds simple; but, there's nothing more important than loving your students. Truly. When Ss know their ideas drive curr & they bring value to the community, they love school. When Ss love school, Ps & grands want to be there, too. #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A3 I want to find real balance and learn how to turn the work brain off when I am with my family. I can put it away now but it’s still going- working to find that balance. #leadlap
A4 I make sure to block out time on my calendar to connect with staff and students, and if there are no meetings on my calendar I declare it a "No Office Day"! #LeadLAP
A4. Begin the day with positives -
Be the person who greets all of the students as they enter the building.
Visit each classroom and ask the teacher how you can help.
#LeadLAP
Yes!! Being out in the community is a game changer! We ask every day for hundreds, maybe thousands of people to come to us. We should do our very best to go to them, also!! #leadlap
Let me know how it goes! I am tweaking my morning ritual to start the day with me at the center... That’s the best way I know to then focus on others! #Leadlap
A3: When I present a growth session, I give it my all, leave it ALL there, so rest and restoration are my fuel. Love this reminder that we need me times in order to give our best at WE time! Planning to schedule as many rest sessions as growth sessions in 2019. #leadlap#leadlap
A3: To remember to savour the small moments - a hug, a sunny day and laughter instead of tears when times get tough (we laugh a lot in the office) #LeadLAP
A4: I got advice years ago from my former principal that if it’s not on her calendar it doesn’t happen. So during the day I put everything on my calendar so I make sure I am blocking out time to ensure the minutes count. #LeadLAP
A4. I reflect continually to make sure I am spending right amount of time and energy on the 4 quadrants from BLAP (Personal, Passions, Positional and Professional). Must have balance #leadlap
If you don't have this book then get it now. There used to be a time when "self care" was frowned upon in our profession. This book shifts that paradigm to where it should be. Recharge yourself and recharge your life. #LeadLAP#tlap@thezenteacher
A4: Work smarter, not harder! Find apps that simplify work flow & schedule reminders for the things that matter most, including a reminder to GO HOME at the end of the day. #LeadLAP
A2: The appearance of your building relays the sense of pride you take in your school. Greeting everyone with a smile and the willingness to assist is great too! #Leadlap
A4: calendar aspointjrnts. I schedule most things for work so that I ensure I get out to the areas. Now I need to do it with my personal life to creat habits and routines outside of my work day to ensure I take care of myself and end my work day. #LeadLAP
A4: Take time to look at the priorities & always schedule time for class visits. I like quiet time to set my mind. But I always loved morning chats with @ryanssiemens (my principal) to make sure we were effective together! #team#LeadLAP
In reply to
@BethHouf, @burgess_shelley, @ryanssiemens
A4: I block out time on my calendar to check in with staff and follow up with students. It not only reminds me to do it - but also helps me remember it's important! #LeadLAP
A1: I think that celebrating academic gains is key to building relationships as it motivates students & teachers to keep pressing forward. Positive parent calls keep parents invested & student led conferences are great ways to heighten accountability & build momentum. #LeadLAP
A4. I keep a to-do list in Google Keep that I can check on my phone and any other device I'm around to help keep me focused on what I have to get done #leadlap
A4: I got advice years ago from my former principal that if it’s not on her calendar it doesn’t happen. So during the day I put everything on my calendar so I make sure I am blocking out time to ensure the minutes count. #LeadLAP
A4 I have been trying to be more consistent w/ keeping a to-do list each day w/ priorities. If it's not a priority, it doesn't have to get done today. And sticking to that list; saying no to remain focused. #leadlap
A3 - self care goals
1 Be a connected believer - my why
2 Be an intentional husband and father - my reasons
3 Be a joyful educator everyday - my mission #kidsdeserveit#BeTheOne
4 Golf more! Laugh more! Love more! Smile more! Live more!
#leadlap
A3: My #oneword2019 is vulnerability. In particular, I want to extend grace to myself as a tool for #selfcare and become more comfortable (and less anxious and or guilty) with the things that make me feel vulnerable #LeadLap
Exactly! That was my goal too! I just wanted to feel better & be more confident in my own skin. Holidays + cruise + snow have been brutal and I've gained a little back, but I still feel so much better! So much more energy! #LeadLAP
In reply to
@MarciaMentor, @BethHouf, @burgess_shelley
A3: Success is my goal for 2019. A strange #oneword for sure, but in this calling there is always *next* on the list. This year I'm going to intentionally identify & celebrate success when it happens. #LeadLAP
A4: Build purposeful routines! I strive to start the day with a #morningmile. I love greeting students and colleagues first thing. Starts my day out right! #LeadLAP
A3: Making time for family is always my #1 priority when it comes to rest and relaxation. I’ll continue to use my commute for podcasts and reflection. #LeadLAP
#leadlap A4- by creating experiences that Ss can build on and exposing them to as many different things as we can. By celebrating the tiny successes and the kindness of others
A4: plan. I use themed days now that I’m not in the classroom. Monday is “academic” day - review lesson plans, get out and observe classes, plan PD etc ... #LeadLAP
A4: Imma be reeaaal honest.. this is hard for me!! I do my best to keep things in my calendar & focus but I struggle to not dive into things immediately when they present themselves!! Looking for ideas for sure!! #LEADLAP
A2 Great question @burgess_shelley . Personally I believe I would treat them the same way, with love and respect. Good evening from Athens Greece.#LeadLAP
A4: I will be intentional in planning throughout the week!! Make the most of each day & look for opportunities to get ahead!! Prioritizing will be key! #LeadLAP
A4: If it's on my school Google calendar, then it's the law! 😁 Now, when and what to add is the harder decision. Maybe switch it up each day, maybe a fun brain break! #LeadLAP
A4 How do we make sure our time is well spent?
- Make a plan.
- Enact the plan.
- Have a way to measure if said plan is working.
- Talk regularly with someone who will hold you to your commitments.
Block off the time. Protect that time. Reflect on your use of the time. #leadlap
A4: BESIDES doing what @BethHouf just said about the 200 minutes, I plan to follow #DitchSummit@JamesClear session advice on how to establish good habits and try to eliminate the bad ones. #LeadLAP
A4: calendar appointments. I schedule time during my day to ensure I get out to the areas & see Ss & Ts. Now I need to do it with my personal life to create habits & routines outside of my work day to ensure I take care of myself & end my work day. #LeadLAP
A4: I would love to learn how to do schedule blocking and have a time for most things. Although social media is a learning tool it can also be a huge time killer. I just have to manage it. #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
@jmartinez727#Vulnerability was m #oneword2018 ... prepare to stretch, grow, trust, and take risks! And yes, you'll find ways to give grace lavishly to yourself and others as a result. #leadlap
I love the “mobile” office idea! What’s in your backpack? #LeadLAP I want to help implement this #muhsd I actually thought some admin use a moving or rolling cart too?😀👍🏼👀💜

A4: We can ensure our time is well spent each day by staying grounded to our values and to our North Star: the kids.
Filter all of your choices through the lens of what's best for kids. 🌟💖

A4 My digital calendar in my phine is integral to my everyday practices. It was always my goal in 2018, and it must be ramped up even more in 2019 that the majority of my day is scheduled so that maximum time is in classrooms, where all the magic happens #LeadLAP
A3: This semester is challenging as I am finishing my dissertation; however, focusing on personal growth like reading books from @dbc_inc re-energizes me in my purpose. My family also enjoys hiking so we will take a trip mid-semester and in the summer to get away. #LeadLAP
A4: I need to be better about giving myself limits on my work time. I’ve been staying later and later, and I need to be more productive to keep this at a minimum. #leadlap
Each point you mentioned is SO important but I believe there is tremendous value to talking w/ a critical friend who will hold you to your commitments. Huge growth when this occurs. #LeadLAP
Q5: Acknowledge and own that there may be room to grow, but also remind yourself, your staff, your students, your community of the GREAT work you did this year and the things you have accomplished.
https://t.co/mcWC4gW7Ii#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A4: I have a daily checklist w/ the things I want to do every single day. It’s starts w/ getting into 5 classrooms & ends w/ sending 1 handwritten thank you note. If I miss something, it becomes a priority the next day. If I miss it 2 days in a row, it’s time to refocus. #LeadLAP
Just read an article this week about the importance of "boredom". How giving ourselves time (& permission!) to zone-out is key to creative bursts & problem solving. When it looks like we're doing nothing, our brains are actually active. #LeadLap
Q5: Acknowledge and own that there may be room to grow, but also remind yourself, your staff, your students, your community of the GREAT work you did this year and the things you have accomplished.
https://t.co/mcWC4gW7Ii#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A4: I love the post it note activity that @BethHouf & @burgess_shelley write about & I combine this w/ the idea of scheduling out my time including informal classroom visits. If it gets schedule it gets done; I want to focus on the activities that will move the needle! #LeadLAP
A3 Just a few: listening to sermons & podcasts on my commute, walking around playground (while kids are playing), and leaving school before it gets dark outside (preferably 4'ish though!) #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A4: We value what we make time for. #LeadLAP I NEED to block out time in my calendar each day to see my support staff and kiddos in the lunchroom at recess.
I totally affirm you with this! Years ago me and some of my colleagues did a home visit, and the family told us that they were surprised by our visit because no one else before had done that. A simple outreach was a game changer just like you said. #LeadLAP
A4 - Be intentional! The power of intent. Have goals and work very hard to achieve them. Surround yourself with people that have the same goals and the same drive! Hashtag LEAD! LEAD! LEAD!
#leadlap
A4 My #oneword2019 is ACTION and I am making action steps for all things in life that are important and take priority. I must place it on the calendar for it to happen, it helps immensely! #leadlap
A1: By reflecting on the previous semester and thinking personally about how we can improve personally. Think about what the students responded to well and implement more of that. Connect with students more and go in with an all in eager & optimistic attitude! #LeadLAP
Q1: “When we want to make impact on our school community, it’s about breaking the traditional script…it’s about creating moments that make a lifelong impression.”
https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
A5: Along with celebrating students' performance in the classroom, celebrate what they are doing outside of the classroom--attending music performances, sporting events, and other activities matters. #LeadLAP
A4: Make sure you've spent time loving on and caring for our relationships, one another AND ourselves. The work will wait, but time is fleeting. Schedule in F2F time and make it a priority, to help me our world more joyful, kinder, more gentle and peaceful. #leadlap
MARVELOUS!!
You can do it!
On days when the paper work was carrying me away, I had a critical friend who would stand quietly in my doorway until I got up. So helpful. #LeadLAP
This is so me! I started off this school year w/ the best of intentions to leave earlier. I went off track sometime in November. New start in January! #LeadLap
Absolutely. I've been talking and picking my wife's brain all break. Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. In all that I strive to do. My family/household must be winning as a result of it #LeadLAP
A5: I started a school twitter account. It’s been great to share all the amazing things going on in our school with our families and community #LeadLAP
A4 - Be intentional! The power of intent. Have goals and work very hard to achieve them. Surround yourself with people that have the same goals and the same drive! Hashtag LEAD! LEAD! LEAD!
#leadlap
A4: A list for the day, calendar for monthly planing and starting the day greeting students and parents are all helpful parts of my routine. Things can happen to derail the day but I always have those things to fall back on. #Leadlap
A5. “Not everything that counts can be counted” - so things like kindness, positivity, mindset, collaboration and hard work- those are our pillars of our school and will always be what we start with and come back to. #LeadLAP
Yes! We did the same thing! Once we did it once, we never stopped! We go on home visits to all Kindergarteners homes to welcome them to our school before the year even starts! Our 1st grade team did the same with their students!! #leadlap
A5: this is key to getting and maintaining a great school culture. I wish we did more. Teachers- please tell your school webmaster about the good things happening and post them! #leadlap
A5 Our school system has implemented Project Kudos. I have always had shout outs in Weekly Memos but am more intentional now. Focusing on small things that most people never notice always garnishes great pride! People want to know that you “see them”.#LeadLAP
Student-Teacher relationships are more important than rigor, relevance and technology. Students will learn if they believe the Teachers care about them. #LeadLAP
A5: Staff share outs at staff meetings/ PD days to share the greatness going on in classrooms. And invite parents in so Ss can share their learning. #LeadLAP
A2: Parents want to be acknowledged, respected & heard, so giving them the opportunity to get involved is crucial. In #HISD, we have “Parent University” which provides an opportunity to come to the campus & particulate in a learning experience. Truly fosters community. #LEADLAP
I posted this just last week, but I’ll post it again because I’m just so proud of these two 5th graders, who learned to sign this book to read to my deaf students. This will never be on a state test, but it means more to me than any score or grade. #LeadLAP
A5 This is the one area in 2019 where I want to be intentional and work hard on! Finding a variety of ways to keep teachers pumped, inspired, and on fire has to be the results #LeadLAP
Surrounding yourself with the best is the best thing you can do!! @leighmragsdale and I talk all the time about the power of positive peer pressure to get things done!! #leadlap#WomenWhoCauseARuckus
A4 - Be intentional! The power of intent. Have goals and work very hard to achieve them. Surround yourself with people that have the same goals and the same drive! Hashtag LEAD! LEAD! LEAD!
#leadlap
A5) Beth you told me this yrs ago-as Ts we spend so much time thinking about what we haven’t done yet and not enough time celebrating all that we do every day-THAT has stayed with me so I try to celebrate every moment w/Ss & staff that makes any kind of difference. #leadlap
Q3: "So to my fellow educators, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself permission to feel. Give yourself permission to be okay with not being okay all the time."
https://t.co/OrESc0iWhK#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
This is essential. As a Dean of Instruction once shared with me years ago, that time is "sacred" and cannot be infringed upon unless something serious is at hand. As well what's "serious" to someone else may not be the same intensity level to us. Leaders protect time. #LeadLAP
Focus for next semester: 1.) Make more parent phone calls 2.) Be more consistent with sending reminder emails 3.) Grade faster 4.) Find ways to incorporate movement into every lesson #leadlap
A5: We have so much more to celebrate then test scores. Good News Calls are my favorite. There is nothing better then calling a parent with good news. A small notecard goes a long way too. #LEADLAP
A5) Beth you told me this yrs ago-as Ts we spend so much time thinking about what we haven’t done yet and not enough time celebrating all that we do every day-THAT has stayed with me so I try to celebrate every moment w/Ss & staff that makes any kind of difference. #leadlap
A5: celebrate everything Ss & Ts accomplish daily. State testing is a measure of ONE day regardless of the Ss circumstances before & during the test. So we celebrate daily goals & accomplishments no matter how big or small. #CelebrateKids#LeadLAP
A5: Celebrate innovative lessons and ideas. By encouraging risk taking and showcasing lessons and learning, we encourage Ts and Ss to try new things. #LeadLap
A5: It’s the things we do daily! The tweets & blog posts & portfolios kids do each day that make learning visible. That excites the students & documents their growth! #LeadLAP
A5: Always be open to feedback without getting offended (which is hard). I also love taking pictures around our building to share on social media. I want to spread the positive things so the negative doesn't seem so bad (like @gcouros says!). #LEADLAP
Q5: Acknowledge and own that there may be room to grow, but also remind yourself, your staff, your students, your community of the GREAT work you did this year and the things you have accomplished.

#leadlap A1- by creating memories and experiences you join in with. My Ss loved it last quarter when I dressed up as a flight attendant and transformed my classroom to a virtual flight around the world- create experiences-anchor memories @RSScrew@SteeleThoughts@m_m_england
I used the #BalanceLAP quadrants (Professional, Personal, Positional, and Passions) to see where I was spending the most time. I was amazed at the results. #LeadLAP

A5: I love celebrating the successes of students and staff. I also love opportunities to thank our families for all the work they do to support students and staff! I do this on social media and in weekly newsletters! #LeadLap
A5 We must make the time to highlight the great things happening in our school. We have shoutouts in meetings, but a hand written note or voxer message can have a really positive impact on staff and students alike. #LeadLAP

Q6: We are all one team.
We are all trying our hardest and bringing our best each and every day.
Realness? Struggle? Frustration? Heck yes, but life is too short and our work is too important for blame, shame and negativity.
https://t.co/ArlhNkL2aS#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
Q5 Social Media is a must! Make sure you are making moments worthy of sharing! Create humans first with kind hearts full of purpose & awareness and then let them take the lead. They won't disappoint when pointed in the right direction #leadlap
A2: I think this is all about the attitude and the perception the teacher has. If the teacher is optimistic that the semester will be great, everyone will adopt that energy. #LeadLAP
A3: I plan to get back to doing yoga and reading for pleasure on a regular basis. Also, spending quality time with my family fuels me to do this all encompassing work that I love. #LeadLAP
A5 We share and celebrate all the great things are students and teachers are achieving everyday at Peine Ridge. We celebrate the growth we see daily in all learning, academically and socially. #leadlap
Q5: I have two student groups working on creating videos about each classroom in the school and publishing them to YouTube. I also try to tweet out pictures or videos of great learning in our schools at least 2-3 times a week. Sorry I'm late! It's been a busy morning! #leadlap

A5: our office manager has done a good job trying to improve morale with a new principal this year. Monthly goodies for the teachers and organizing student/teacher of the month. #leadlap
A5 Getting the word out: newsletters, @Twitter@facebook , word of mouth. There is so much greatness happening around us, we need to do a better job of spreading the news! #leadlap
A5: Celebrations for any reasons in the classroom (Student comes up with a great thinking during a read-aloud, S shows integrity, kindness). Letters, cards, surprise phone calls home to praise students. #LeadLAP
A5. By:
1 being kind - always
2 thinking
3 building relationships
4 never giving up
5 being the one because kids deserve it
#leadlap
Students aka people are more important than test scores and grades! @brewerhm - "the people, the people, the people!"
A5: By the way, I also got my picture with Deaf Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Elf. Having my deaf students be able to share with them what they wanted for Christmas was magical! #LeadLAP
I love that you share photos of the positives! Quite a while ago @aaron_hogan posted a tweet w/ this idea and I liked it so much I quickly created a graphic of it. Great when others also share their photos. #LeadLAP
I'm totally digging this! For 2019 many people just need to give themselves "permission". Permission to:
*Be awesome
*Recharge
*Protect their daily reflection time
*Be their best in all areas not just work
*Create their best life and live it
#LeadLAP
A5: Make time for reflection and celebration. Reflection is a vital piece of the inquiry cycle, yet it is far too often overlooked. Have reading & writing celebrations, spotlight student work as exemplars—not just finished work, but revision, risk-taking, innovation... #leadlap
A5: I love to walk my campus and take pictures of all the great things happening! I then share some on twitter and others for the week in review. #LeadLAP
A5: As a SPED teacher, it is very important for me to highlight milestones. Praise can be given though small notes or even a fun sticker on good grade. High school Ss still love stickers! #LeadLAP
Q4: The book Leveraging Leadership states that you can spend your day putting out 🔥 or you can block out time to intentionally make change. I establish repeating appts. for observations & coaching meetings in advance to honor Ts time & ensure quality coaching happens. #LeadLap
A5. I think I've tweeted about this before, but I like to pop into classes whenever they change their bulletin board and let them know how awesome their work looks. You can tell how much the teachers and students appreciate it. #leadlap
A5: We make a #GoodNewsCalloftheDay and make sure the reason reflects EVERYTHING we value: kindness, citizenship, perseverance. Things that are hard to test, but are essential for when we face all of life’s tests and challenges. #LeadLAP

Thanks #LeadLAP crew, @burgess_shelley@BethHouf@burgessdave See you in the new year! Going with my fam that I am visiting in MD to an escape room! This would be fun for our first days back to create intrigue and excitement! I'd love to have students create the escape rooms too!
A5: I like to post things that students and teachers are doing on Twitter, but I need to do it more. I’ll sometimes make positive phone calls home, but I need to do that more also. #LeadLAP
A5 Through our classroom blog, Ss & Ps continually know what we value most in our classroom: the engaging ways their Ss are spending their time, the interesting units of study that drive us, the joyful photos that surface. #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A6 This is an area where I need to grow. I try to look them in the eyes and say thank you specifically for what they did. Shout outs in written communication and in front of others goes a long way. #LeadLAP
I started making phone calls during the class - kids go wild! And families are so appreciative! I started doing this when I taught 2nd gr. I teach 6th now and still do it! #LeadLAP

A5: if it’s important book those events & time in advance. A new thing my district is doing is #pbl community nights each quarter, Ss presenting projects, it’s a showcase of learning #LeadLAP
A6: I'm good at celebrating some staff, but I def need to be better to celebrate WITH all staff. I do treat all of my building in Dec, but maybe a surprise treat in the middle of a long winter would be nice? And, I'll help the hospitality committee celebrate staff bdays! #LeadLAP
A5: A weekly Monday Motivation Newsletter for my staff has an entire page of pictures from the week. Ts look to see if they are on there & share w/ Ss when they've been shared. #leadlap
A6. Jump into their classrooms, take a quick photo of what the students are learning and post it on your school's Twitter account.
JUST DO IT! :-)

You can FEEL it in our Knit One Save One PSA video!
https://t.co/Me5ntUkm91#leadlap
A6. What I try to do is leave a note for the teacher about something positive they did. All too often, teachers see any visit as evaluators, but if we leave uplifting words we can build community, trust, and appreciation. #LeadLAP
A4: Work smarter, not harder! Find apps that simplify work flow & schedule reminders for the things that matter most, including a reminder to GO HOME at the end of the day. #LeadLAP
A6 As the principal my goal is to uplift and share all the great things the Ts and staff are doing. I write about it in my Friday Focus, Tweet it, and share it on Instagram. I also invite district admin in to see and encourage our staff to share out! #leadlap

A6: I feel I have not done a great job of this, this year (but I guess you’d have to ask them)! I want to write more notes to them...I feel like this year I have been checking in and having lots of one-on-one conversations to let them know I’m glad their on the team #LeadLAP
A6. The best way is thru authentic and sincere feedback/support either thru handwritten note of face to face interactions. Most educators do not like public praise. Praise individuals in private but promote their hard work in public . #LeadLAP
I tell them and thank them in the moment. I thank them for the little things like contacting families or taking the time to figure out ways to support students! #LeadLap

https://t.co/NhtDxEM0m3#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley
This is really important, Joel. Not everyone likes being appreciated in the same way. Making something splashy or public can be uncomfortable for some. #LeadLAP
A6: I’ve been writing notes of appreciation this year and putting them in staff mail boxes. In the New Year, I think I’m going to go up and tell people why I appreciate them, too. #LeadLAP
A6: Set aside time in faculty meetings to highlight staff and staff spotlights for the community. Recognition in front of colleagues and the community is always good. #LeadLAP
A4: Planning out the week each Sunday helps me to be intentional about each moment. Time must be blocked out for tackling those important tasks. I also use alerts and timers to ensure I’m keeping my commitments. #LeadLAP
Indeed, as leaders we need to be mindful that the inclination for some would be for us to operate 100% in one quadrant only being the quadrant they see. However true leaders see all quadrants and know that each quadrant is essential to who they are at their core. #LeadLAP
A6: Never underestimate the power of “Thank you”- through conversation, notes...People need to know their contributions are valued and appreciated! #LeadLAP
A6: Just as we celebrate our students, it is important to create traditions that celebrate teachers' successes too. Along with this traditions, a simple, but meaningful conversation can go a long way as well. #LeadLAP
We also spend way to much time worried about "bad" behavior and very little time stopping to see small victories, or awesome things our students are doing and them praising them. #LeadLAP

A6: I like to give handwritten shoutout notes to teachers. I prefer handwritten notes to emails because teachers will hang them up by their desks! We also do shoutouts at school board meetings! It’s so important to recognize the good work that is happening! #LeadLAP
A6: monthly whole group celebrations, daily I set a goal to intentionally encourage a staff member, at least 1, I’ve got more help with this, it’s getting contagious, be INTENTIONAL #LeadLAP#gratitude
A4: I wrote down the things that are most important to me and have decided to put a focus on those! Limiting myself to an certain amount of time to relax on my phone (unless needed). And making goals I know I can stick to! #LeadLAP
Q6: We are all one team.
We are all trying our hardest and bringing our best each and every day.
Realness? Struggle? Frustration? Heck yes, but life is too short and our work is too important for blame, shame and negativity.

Recently someone shared that they schedule two to five minute conversations with ALL members of the staff and ask them, "If you were principal, what would you change?" #LeadLAP

A6: I try to write acknowledgement notes to staff members at least 3 times per week. We also started several #gratitude journals that circulate around the school. #Leadlap
A6. Usually with food and fun! Small gestures go a long, long way. Always nice to make up a reason for people to bring in food and celebrate all the great effort going on in schools! Pie day, 9x13 day, birthday months, mondays in general - open for more ideas!
#leadlap
A6: The admin team rocgnizes one #DreamTeam monthly, but our staff recognizes one another daily by writing notes on our LEADer Loot (PBIS cash for staff). Admin writes notes to staff as well to recognize & celebrate anything we notice no matter how big or small. #LeadLAP
A6: I've shared this before, but it's KEY to opening doors, affirming people and appreciating who they are and what they contribute to your #character building. I used to LOVE putting little treats in their boxes, with a fun little saying, to encourage and lift them up! #leadlap
A6: @AngelaMaiers shared this gem and I am going to make #matters my #oneword2019 and commit to sharing with Ss and Ts why they matter as often as possible! #LeadLAP
A6: We try to celebrate til the cows come home! Each week in grade level collabs we celebrate student learning by cheering on the teaching that led to the learning! We do teacher shoutouts on twitter!! Seeing your pic & your amazingness when you get on Twitter is powerful! #LEADLAP
This is so true! It is important to celebrate what we currently do and stop worrying about what has not been done yet. As soon as we plan, everything will start falling into place. #leadlap

Q5: Ss are recognized with daily, weekly, and monthly rewards for respect, responsibility, and resilience.
Ts are recognized for noticing S behavior. We also have a Braggin’ Wagon that is handed out to recognize a T for something they are doing to impact Ss. #LeadLAP
A6: My 9th SGA went out into the community and asked for donations for a holiday staff breakfast. It turned out to be amazing, and the community was so happy to provide food for their local high school. All you have to do is ask! #LeadLAP
A6: We recognize and appreciate others by SEEING them. Ask how others are doing. Listen. Really listen. Follow up—not just in the moment, but in the many days to come. #leadlap
A6: Ensuring that ALL STAFF-teachers, custodians, secretaries, admin etc. are noticed and appreciated...we are ALL on the same team..team kid! #LeadLAP
Love this! We affirm "working harder" and that has its place; however, we don't always affirm "working smarter". I dig this for many reasons, one being that sometimes people confuse the quantity of effort with equating to efficacy or desired outcomes. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP We also instituted time for teachers and staff to work on their own passion projects - we call it My Time. They do these things with students that share similar interests. This values all for the other skills they bring to the school besides their knowledge of content.
A6 At our faculty mtgs there is time for staff shout outs, but I don't think we do this enough. As a T, I drop a note or an anchor of appreciation in my colleagues mailboxes when I notice something I'd like to acknowledge. #leadlap
Q7: One evening after our book was published, we started brainstorming how we could continue to support leaders, but in a way that wasn’t the norm.

#LeadLAP Thank you for a great chat this morning! Time to start the day! My six year old nephew just woke up & he’s awaking my teenagers. We are going to #SixFlags Arlington today in the 30 degree Dallas weather. #helpme#BestAuntAwardForFreezing

You've touched on a "secret" some leaders miss and that's the value of what I call an "ongoing dialogue". When all stakeholders know that we have an ongoing dialogue we can always have the most accurate and timely pulse of what's happening and what stakeholders desire. #LeadLAP
A6 We make the time to recognize those people.
We carve it into our Writing Workshops, sculpt it into our Explorations, push it into our day-to-day interactions.
In teaching Ss to appreciate others, we also teach them gratefulness.
#LeadLAP@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A7 My dream is to include more student and staff voice in sharing our school story in blogs, tweets, and Instagram and Facebook posts. It shouldn't be my school story, it should be our school story. #LeadLAP
Q7: One evening after our book was published, we started brainstorming how we could continue to support leaders, but in a way that wasn’t the norm.

A5: Search for teachable moments. If there’s drama, use it as an opportunity for growth. Listening to students talk and finding things to help them emotionally. Telling my Ss that I love them so they trust me and know they can come to me #LeadLAP
Q5: Acknowledge and own that there may be room to grow, but also remind yourself, your staff, your students, your community of the GREAT work you did this year and the things you have accomplished.

A7. I want the same drive and passion that I have Learned from the PLN and share that with others so they too realize that the PLN can be so powerful! Develop others. #LeadLAP
A6: We invite all staff to share photos of successes on slides for our monthly staff meetings. It's great to be in the know and celebrate all that is going on at our school K-5, specialists, cafeteria...All are important and as was mentioned "key" to our success! #LeadLAP

A7: to build authentic relationships with my Ss & staff. I want them to always know I’m in their corner cheering them on & supporting them - no matter how great or how small the celebration & no matter what the circumstance may be! #LeadLAP
Same! At my school, we are allowed to leave at 2:45. I start out saying I will leave by 4 and always stay until the building closes at 6. I am struggling with meeting my goal of leaving at a reasonable time. #LEADLAP
A7: To start up a school podcast, but not in a traditional sense. Plan to use @gosynth and have a S from each grade level in the district say one awesome thing they learned or experienced, string it together, and create the weekly podcast (like a shoutout podcast) #LeadLAP.
#leadlap A7- one dream is to make an impact as an SDG Global ambassador with my Ss on the world. To continue to connect globally🌎 and to make a lasting impression on Ss that they will carry with them throughout their HS career @RSScrew@SDG2030@zelfstudie@JenWilliamsEdu
Q6: One thing we recently started was a treat cart. We walked room to room pushing a cart full of goodies. We stopped at each room and told Ss why we were recognizing their T. The T then came out and selected treats. The Ts loved the idea. We plan to do it more often. #LeadLAP
A7: One dream I want to accomplish in 2019 is that every student and staff member at our K-5 school will know themselves as a reader and share their reading identity with others! #LeadLAP
A5: While this is a growth area for me, students have the opportunity to showcase their visual & performing artistic ability. Some of our most challenging students come alive in these areas, which provide a bridge for positive communication as they are celebrated. #LeadLAP
A7: to attract more students to participate actively in school projects. The benefits are multiple but not all of them are willing to take part #LeadLAP
A6: We eat lunch together (team) and I always talk to teachers around the school when I see them! LISTENING to them and providing genuine interest in their struggles and lives. Helping when they need it and providing praise when you can! #LeadLAP
Q6: We are all one team.
We are all trying our hardest and bringing our best each and every day.

Indeed giving ourselves "permission" to say no to some things. Just because something is a priority in someone else's life and to their goals doesn't always mean that's the case with our lives and goals. Be strategic, be focused, be the advocate for your goals and life. #LeadLAP
A7: I want to be see our school atmosphere/culture be positive and uplifting every day. I want to be a catalyst in helping with this change by encouraging and challenging others daily. I will schedule this in my calendar. #LeadLAP
A7: I’ve been dreaming of ways we can empower more leadership at school so more students and staff can share their ideas and share their voices. Gotta make this happen. #LeadLAP
That's awesome!! We ditched the 'reason for tardy' & instead ask what do you need? Hug, Love, or Peace. The secretary gives kid a hug & tells them how much she loves them. Td knows if kid needs peace for a few minutes before starting the day, or an I love you & hug. #leadlap
A7 Lead Ts and Ss to dream big and make a difference together. Continue to learn more about different cultures and break the barriers that impact the achievement gap in our school and possibly write about it. #leadlap
And I think giving the staff heads up would help them come up with ideas too. I wonder if your culture has to be one of strong trust before this could be effective? #LeadLAP

A3: Continue to Seek learning opportunities that stretch my thinking. Continue to meet with my accountability partners. Continue to reach out to new educators & listen. Continue my spiritual journey. #LeadLAP
A7. Lead my own school. This is No. 1 professional goal. All other goals short this one goal. I have from now until end of Aug 2019 to accomplish this. #LeadLAP
A7: I’m completing my Bachelor’s so... GET A JOB and start my own life in a new city!! Lol.
Aside from that, hold onto the qualities about me I love and grow in the areas that I think need improvement. #LeadLAP

Love Character Ed! Students are benefited when we include character in our lessons or take time to talk about kindness as a way to create a safe space and nurture our classroom community. #LeadLAP@careacter
I'm totally digging this! When I was a brand new campus administrator years ago, one of the first things I did was walk the hallways before and after school started. I learned that visibility was one of my greatest assets and ways to foster and build goodwill. #LeadLAP
Pretty pumped to publish my very first picture book!! I'm seriously beside myself!!!! EEEEK! Been a dream of mine for YEARS! Thanks, @dbc_inc.
Heart y'all!

A7) One dream I have for 2019 is to inspire my middle schoolers (and colleagues!) with the voices of connected educators who inspire ME every day! Actually can't wait to tweet a @flipgrid link later today!:) #LeadLAP
We also asked several other Qs like favorite snacks, etc. From time to@time, I will get treats for people using the info about preferences from the google sheet. We also share the sheet, other folks also use the info #LeadLap
Awww .. that is SO terrific! Let me know how it goes/tag me.

At the beginning of the day I greet students, then set goals, prioritize, and respond to emails. At the end of the day, I interact w/each S as they leave. I then organize desk, respond to emails, and put a sticky note on top of my computer w/ must dos for the next day. #LeadLAP
A7: My dream is that all students and staff see themselves as leaders and positive difference makers. That we find energy and hope and use it to drown out the negative #LeadLAP
Q7: I recently started blogging, but what I would like to do in 2019 is more video production of my vision for education. My goal is to have one post a month be a video. I want to create meaningful work that can be used by others to help in creating great schools. #LeadLAP
Thank you so much to this amazing crew. It has been an honor chatting with you all throughout 2018. Looking forward to another great year in 2019. #LeadLAP
A6: I take time to send encouraging emails and texts, give them a shoutout on Twitter or I will tell them face to face that they are appreciated. And since I’m a foodie😊 I often surprise them with breakfast, lunch or a sweet treat. #LeadLAP
A7: Focus more time intentionally planning my future in education. There are so many options, and we don't often allow ourselves time to dream and then plan. Maybe it's time to start doing a little more of both! #LeadLAP
A4: Create a daily "Get It Done list." I mark off what I accomplished and dance to celebrate! What I do not complete, I just move it to the next day or let it go! #LeadLAP
It all begins with one smile
one - what you share with me is important
one - I am going to write that down to be sure I remember.
Over time, that trust element would grow. #LeadLAP
And I think giving the staff heads up would help them come up with ideas too. I wonder if your culture has to be one of strong trust before this could be effective? #LeadLAP

Heads up for sure. Yes, trust & openness is vital. Otherwise, people would have difficulty being candid. Also, if they don’t have trust, they may not believe the suggestions would be considered. I wonder if a g form in concert with F2F would be a preferred method by some #LeadLap

Aren't there amazing educators in the #LeadLAP chat?
Were you too busy during the chat to be sure to 'follow' those who share your passion for students?
Here are easy directions to 'follow' them
I have an "Urgent" and "Soon" Google Keep list, if it's not on either of those, it probably won't get done. ;) #LeadLAP Letting it go is sometimes necessary.
