-----------------> Q1 is ready, are you? Watch for
-----> Q1 How do students feel about writing?
Whoo hoo! Glad you made it!
Sam Patterson Maker Wrangler Prek-6
A1: My students always love it. Those who find it hard, use tools to help relay info.
Hi Letty kindergarten Tt from Ventura County
A1: Depends. If they like the subject matter, they love it. If they have choice, they love it. If its a formula, not so much.
Hi everyone! Leila here Escondido Deputy Sup
A1 Ss seem to like creative writing, but on demand academic writing, not so much. 😢
A1: Most students aren't thrilled about writing. I'm always a little surprised by those who say they like it.
A1: students are often challenged by the vulnerability writing requires
Amen! Get rid of the formula 5 paragraph essays!
A1:It depends on the student. I’ve had students who wrote books for fun and those who dreaded writing a simple sentence.
A1 This is a mixed bag at beg. of the year. Writer's workshop and blogging helped change mindsets.
Something happens between elementary & HS...
Agree! My students feel the same way. Not so wild about formulaic academic writing, lots of love for choice/creativity
A1. W/ My students, I feel they don't look forward to it and get easily frustrated with it.
it is a crutch that inflicts further injuries
will be here for a bit, have homework to turn in
A1: more hopeful than ever with google voice options and g docs add-ons. Assuming offered/used. & I say this with a blog. #🚫writer
A1: High school Ss mainly see it as a mean to an end. Many grumble when asked to write. Few tasks are authentic.
A1 Depends on what and where. Overall mine seem to like it right now. Most need guidance and presenting.
A1: In math, Ss get surprised when asked to write. They say it's for English.
A1 Writing in math is often a battle.
Yep. Killed the joy for my son. T made him add a paragraph. He completely fluffed it and hated it. https://t.co/oRJG0lw0q3
it is a crutch that inflicts further injuries
A1: I taught for years from elem to HS. Ss feel differently. For some writing is natural; others a struggle.
Hi all, Laurie from San Marcos. 3rd grade teacher
A1 This student [me] not so much. Until I got into Mrs. Beeson’s 10th grade college English class where I could write my own stuff
so much depends on context, intention, and a red wheelbarrow
google voice really helped a Ss of mine last year write great work!
This is Karen from Shadow Hills High. I teach math I cp, hp, & compacted math I.
It's a battle in English too. It's a battle period.
A1:As an elem. district administrator I have observed that the classes who have Ts that value writing have Ss that LOVE to write.
I think so, yes. Writing expectations increase and writing is more likely to be assigned than taught.
*prewriting not presenting autocarrot.
. writing needs to matter to the author, or it wont matter to anyone.
Yes, Ss sometimes have difficulty seeing writing as a transferable skill.
A1:My students love to write what they want to write- not assigned writing
A1 Really depends on the writing Some like writing poetry/songs, journals, etc. Few ♥️ essays, but some like that they're "easy"
Often in HS they aren’t enthused even with choice. They need a meaningful task. They need authentic audience also.
A1 I think it is a mixed emotion in my class. Some find it difficult due to language barriers, some love it!
Is the wheelbarrow named Rosebud?
that is the sled, the wheelbarrow had the plums in it, but he ate them
I introduce it at the beg. of the year to show their progress and relevance of writing in math.
I love this statement! Writing should be personal and important. Totally agree that it needs to matter to the S.
Word. https://t.co/2zMRcDQtHK
Often in HS they aren’t enthused even with choice. They need a meaningful task. They need authentic audience also.
A1 in my case they’re fearless, they are just beginning to understand how letters and sounds are used 2 tell amazing stories
A1: depends on topic and tools. If writing topic is relevant Ss will be engaged.
I love sharing with my Ss that authors spend 80% of their time in prewriting.
/it is going to be 102 in LA tomorrow
hello all at - Julie here and late to the game tonight
I love watching kinders write!
great to have you here, we are going to get Q2 in a minutes
My Ss, especially this year, do a lot of writing, even if they wish I wouldn't push it so much
this is not my experience. I spend most of my time editing. THAT'S when writing happens.
Victoria Bradshaw, MS Principal joining from Livingston, CA
-----------------> Q2 is up next. Watch for
Many of my Ts are kicking butt through Ss blogs. Authentic for each S to read other Ss
A1: Some of my Ss LOVE it, but I have a few this year that really try to avoid it. Want to help them see it's fun & they can do it!
A1: While teaching read/write, I found that struggling Ss loved tech. They could now revise! Readers could decipher stories.
tardy! Good evening, - I’m David, English teacher, grades 10-11, Palo Alto HS
does that include the time I spend cleaning, while thinking and avoiding?
A1 Ss can love writing if presented an opportunity to express their thoughts/ideas
A2 - Discovery inspires writing...
A1:I think many students fear writing because they have been taught that expression is not the goal but structure
I just read that in a research article once. Everyone has their own personal writing process.
Hope, 1st grade teacher from Sacramento. :)
A1: "what's the minimum we have to write?"
A1 - some don't hate it - unless I make them go through the "process" No ONE wants to do that (least of all me)
Also writing expectations need to match current ability and time given https://t.co/1AHjYGv6qn
A1: depends on topic and tools. If writing topic is relevant Ss will be engaged.
Completely agree! Specially if asked to create something through writing.
Agreed. Their thoughts are not validated. https://t.co/ELx8ypUvEw
A1:I think many students fear writing because they have been taught that expression is not the goal but structure
BAM! The edit and rewrite cycle is the secret to real life. I know I do it all the time.
"How many sentences in a paragraph?"
Exactly. I do a tone of prewriting in my head before my fingers hit the keyboard.
"Until it's done. Better be 5th grade quality." I don't give minimums anymore.
Gabe here, arriving late. Former teacher and now ed-tech founder at , 3D world for synchronous online learning. Hi all!
We had schoolwide PD on blogging last yr. Can’t wait to c Ts implement
As many as it takes to get your point across - that's what I tell my Ss.
thanks for sharing the questions! I hope I get the right answers! ;)
A2 - A discovery of what one thinks...
editing is my least favorite phase of my writing process. I know. I don't tell my students that ;)
I'm sure it's how some people write. I get it all down then shave. I prewrite enough to start.
I'd have to dig. I used it in my research paper when I was in my Masters program.
A2a An emotional response to something inspires my writing. Sometimes. It comes from a need to be heard. Sometimes.
I enjoy editing the work of others more than editing my own work
A1: just thought..my Ss who don't love to write yet might start to when they have a real audience. fav authors is my first idea...
A2 Good writing comes from experience. It comes from noticing. It comes from reading, a lot.
Q2 What inspires writing? Where does good writing come from?
A2:Like other tasks when it is purposeful, when there is a real audience AND when it is not formulaic good chance it will inspire
Me too! I love giving feedback.
I find that I can express myself much, much better in writing versus face to face...
A1 Ss love the CW class and when we switch up writing forms of comm (write a Tweet). But essays are hard bc writing is hard
Q2 What inspires writing? Where does good writing come from?
different kinds of editing, diff. purposes, timelines. Some I like more than others
I agree that reading definitely makes a better writer. Trying to convince Ss of that.
A2: It come from choice, something to say, stories to tell, info to share.
I just read Peter Brown's about writing The Wild Robot. Loved it
A2 When it is MORE than an assignment I try to make them go OUTSIDE my class. I also like to give choice when possible & vary type
A2: good writing comes from the heart, the "writing tools" the student owns, and from a well designed prompt or topic
Read somewhere "anyone can write, writers can rewrite." It's never easy. Kill your darlings, all that
A2: Good writing is inspired by authentic subject matter that is relevant to the writer.
S2: Good writing comes from within if Ss are inspired, have voice. Blogs provide new avenue for expression https://t.co/Twse9nV6B4
A1. Anything can inspire writing. It depends on the person. Good writing comes from the head listening to the heart.
A2b I write when an idea kicks me on the wazoo.
Hi, ! Are we talking about writing?? O yay! Shannon from Oakland, late!
I love when Ss share their writing & get peer feedback
A2 Good writing comes from freedom. Freedom to think, create and share fosters a safe environment to
A2: Good creative writing comes from being in touch with your own feelings and being able to empathize with others’ feelings.
A2: personal experience or intense interest is a great place to begin writing. Relevant topics that are relatable.
A2: Knowing that writing will be read beyond classroom walls. Student choice in writing tasks. Prewriting for a movie project.
“kill your darlings” - oh yes, so many times I’ve had to do that, always difficult.
A2 Personal experience plays a role in exciting kids and buy in when writing
A2: Writing comes from having a choice of what to write and how to write it.
yes! structure/organization is important, but is just one part of writing! Ideas have to be the foundation I think!
A2: Giving students timed writings can create the urgency. David Kelly of IDEO uses time limits to build creativity.
Tammy Kindergarten teacher from Escondido, CA
I HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS! I don't see helping kids as editing. I see it as guiding.
. I find I'm very much the opposite! twitter chats are a nice in-between.
A2: Never underestimate the power of doodling! It can definitely inspire writing. ❤️
A1: When my students learn something new they want to write to share
HUGE fan of peer reviewing Especially when sts start to get the hang of it
A2: Good writing comes from choice and freedom. Ideas shouldn't always be limited to a prompt
A2-part 2: writing in 2016 is different for Ss than even 5 yrs ago. It's changing. Good or bad-already done.
Editing is what I do to make the WRITING better. Guiding is making the WRITER better.
Feedback. But only after student has reflected first.
Great point! Writing doesn't always start when it's all figured out, but could be the process to figure it out
Life, meaning, connection, the need to express one's voice inspires writing.Good writing comes from the ❤︎ and speaks to ❤︎ and mind
A2: good writing comes writers that knows how to write well.
I want to say that the reader is where good writing comes from - all about the audience
A2: Choice, time, and encouragement to take risk.
A2) Real audience, Real talk. And must have a purpose that makes the effort worth it.
A2 Good writing comes from believing that you have something worth saying.
-----------------> Q3 is set. Watch for
A2: Good non-fiction writing comes from being able to organize your thoughts, formulate a thesis & present info in an engaging way
A2 inspired writing comes from passion and/or purpose backed up by a little skill and courage
-----> Q3 How can we design choice into writing experiences?
Good writing comes from careful word choice
-----> Q3 How can we design choice into writing experiences?
A2 it comes from a Ts own love and understanding of language, it comes across in ones teaching and Ss pick up on it
A2. I've definitely found audience to be key -- authentic audiences, with writing actually going somewhere, w/a purpose.
Readers make the best writers! ❤️ https://t.co/PERtVJkdZC
A2 Good writing comes from experience. It comes from noticing. It comes from reading, a lot.
I don't think too quickly and, I tend to not interrupt people because I want to use what they say against them!
Marla 3rd San Marcos popping in for a few.
How was the received by Ts? Great topic!
A3: give Ss options in how they write: on paper, blog, even collection of tweets. No. More. FORMULAS.
A2: Powerful experiences inspire writing. A need to share, purge, reveal or make sense of
A3: Choice can happen in Workshop model- giving time to fill the writer's notebook rather than always working on specific genres
A3: Numerous ways. Choice in prompts, choice in form and mode.
A3 Keep the skill to be learned/practiced in mind over the assignment expectation. Make them focus on that.
A2-I use Mentor Text like Thank You Mr. Faulker - Patricia Polacco for students to write struggle essays https://t.co/1kscu2CLNt
Yes! Love using Mentor Text to inspire good writing- studying/noticing/caring about word choice, sentences, chapt.… https://t.co/jq3yd1wUKT
A2 Good writing comes from experience. It comes from noticing. It comes from reading, a lot.
We call it Fast Prototype writing. Needs to be done so kids don't always feel that writing is LABOR
A2: READING inspires writing. Thoughts, feelings, experiences, dreams inspire writing.
A3: hooks, examples, stories, feedback!
and writing could spark a passion in an area that wasn't there before
Let Ss make fakebook pages, sequels, alt endings...
A3a Lose [at least for a little while] the grammar.. Nothing kills [my] creativity like rulez.
A2 inspiration often comes from experiences.
John from San Juan Capistrano joining late.
A3 how about asking Ss what writing choices they would want to have embedded into their writing projects
Stream of conscious writing! Just write every day!
John we are on Q3 -----> Q3 How can we design choice into writing experiences?
A2: Good writing comes from writing, thinking/talking about writing, watching writers every day!
A3 - avoid formulaic writing! Use exemplars and professional examples...show them your writing
Yes! Powerful experiences inspire the best writing. Class community needs to be strong enough to share deeply.
A3 choice is created in mediums to publish and audiences to share with
Write! ;-) That can happen in the edit process. https://t.co/ch7zjr7SXM
A3a Lose [at least for a little while] the grammar.. Nothing kills [my] creativity like rulez.
A0: Jen from Upland ELA/ELD 7th grade teacher
https://t.co/BUUYpMfHdI
A3 - avoid formulaic writing! Use exemplars and professional examples...show them your writing
A3: Choice pertains to either form or content. Some formats are strict, others fluid allowing for greater voice.
Love this! It is a way to share their brilliance so others can see it and build on it!
A3: allow for a variety of writing types- blogs, technical guide, gaming manual w/ visuals. This is the new way for many Ss.
A3) Whenever possible leave form/topic up to Ss, every form of communication reflects the writing standards to some degree
especially when those constraints require problem solving. A good challenge can go a long way
A3:Making the writing about expression at first and not structure, grammar, syntax, creating a safe environment then structure
presenter did a fantastic job modeling in classrooms on each grade level.
A3: Facilitate discussions on topics Ss are interested in. Read mentor texts. Model good writing
A3. Don't tell a student what they are proving in their writing. Make sure they get to write their thoughts, not regurgitate
A1: My students complain about writing...they dont like it at all...which is a challenge as a T.
A3 use pictures as prompts allow Ss to choose the direction for their writing
Out early. About to board. ✈️ have a great week everyone. Be awesome
A3. It all depends on the task at hand and probably the content
Have you asked them why they hate it? https://t.co/JcIjPldVCO
A1: My students complain about writing...they dont like it at all...which is a challenge as a T.
When you have to write things like informational texts, it can seem like drudge work.
A3b I remember my kids’ earliest writing.. it was unfettered by whatever fetters. How about older Ss pick subjects from youngers?
A3. if you have a student-centered curriculum, the choices in writing flow from there -- can't be artificial choice.
A3 Free write - any topic - just write - solid 3 minutes...nonsense etc. like an exorcism - if there's anything of worth - edit
A3: There is choice in how the writing is displayed or presented to others.
This is our brand! Making means giving Ss challenges not prescriptions.
Definitely think modeling writing habits & attitudes is huge. Ss get a lot out of seeing writing in action from Ts
That's fantastic! Do you have any recommendations on good blogging platforms for Ss?
A3: multiple prompt choices:ex narrative, expository or opinion on same subject. Give kids ability to help edit each other too
A3: Choice is not assigning students to write about what they did on their summer vacation or choosing a topic to write about it
Let them write raps and slam poetry...let them see writing can come in many flavors.
A3: Getting Ss to write about their own experiences is motivating, offers choice & can be therapeutic.
fantastic! What a highly motivating way for Ss to learn.
-----------------> Q4 is coming very soon. Look for tweet!
A3c Is act of writing separate and distinct from the process of selecting something to write about? Ease 1/2 stress, kids choose..
-----> Q4 How might we design inspiring or authentic writing experiences?
A3: playwrights, cinematographers, presenters, poets, song writers, singers all write. The medium just changes.
A3: Give students parameters, but let them decide how they are going to complete the assignment.
Agree! Ss learn a lot when teachers model writing and do think-alouds.
I like the Design Thinking language in tonights questions
A4: Start w/ debating relevant controversies..that always gets the juices flowing.
Try getting them going w/ shorter things to write about. By ss love 642 Tiny Things to Write About.
A4: Let them write about what they know, first.
thank you have to get back to my homework. Have a great week everyone!
A3x What's that game where we add to someone else's story and someone adds to ours? That for a writing prompt.
There isn't usually a lot of choice when you have a curriculum to follow.
A4. A great question. I am always inspired by David Perkins idea of "playing the whole game," not just bits. 1/2
A4. Give students authentic and inspiring reasons to write. Like reflections on their life or on something inspiring they read
A4: I think its important to allow Ss opportunities to talk things out before putting pen to paper.
I like how starting with a debate can lead to listening and empathy, then creating solutions to prolems.
A3 A creative way to start choice in writing is to give an opportunity for experience first such as exploring a location with
102F in LA tomorrow? No way. Dry heat?
A4: Find an authentic audience and you will have an authentic writing experience. https://t.co/YGsKakoOLb
-----> Q4 How might we design inspiring or authentic writing experiences?
I also used unjournaling strategy, write about something funny or different, like a silly picture.
Thank you for that resource, Kevin! :)
A4 Ask Ss to write on behalf of social justice. They care about deep things. Need ideas? Try the Global Issues Network. 20 issues
A4 Blogging brought such a unique element to writing like i have never seen before. They really write for audience!
I have Ss writing reflective blogs this year on readings from 's Guide to Being Awesome.
We need to know what's going on their Ss "world" & reflect those writing activities. Mine create/explain smartphone apps for chars
A4 con't..So, designing writing experiences that mirror, or rather ARE, real writing that real writers do. 2/2
Or design prompt so your class/school is an authentic audience.
A4 show them through your work, lead and let go
Apparently the Sun is shooting a movie and they are bringing it directly to LA.
A4:I was taught if they write I write. Share list of signif life events. I go first. List lives in folder for inspiration all yr. .
A4a Hmm.. inspiring & authentic writing experiences???
A4: Find an authentic audience for S writing. Involve the community-parents, family, etc. Make writing relevant to real life!
- I agree, especially if you teach teenagers!
Such a great idea, Mindy! Thanks for sharing!
is a great, safe choice for classroom blogging PLUS building a library of resources
Yes! This is a great way to get Ss writing.
A4. Have the kids MAKE and then share. so many literacies
build off the funds of knowledge that students and families have at home.
A4:Have students use writing as an outlet for expression, incorporate music, sound, nature, family experiences, history, community
A4: Inspire writing: mix it up. 'I Search' tends to inspire authenticity. Or inquiry into family or social justice.
A4 I have jrs create their own prompts. They HATE it to start, but the papers are usually their best! Otherwise I use real life
-----------------> Q5 is up next. Look for tweet!
I completely agree! Sent. Frames are starters/helpers. However, many use it as a crutch =(
A4 provide them an authentic audience, use collaborative tools to share the writing experience
No problem. Read it this summer and wanted to share it with my Ss.
My Ss love blogging and this year's parents are commenting like none other. So exciting!
A4: Getting kids to be list writers. Collect ideas>pick ideas to free write>pick free writes worthy of publishing process
A4: Bringing in real-world writing experiences makes it purposeful. Current events helps.
-----> Q5 How can we encourage a supportive writing culture in our classrooms?
Love picture prompts in first grade! https://t.co/mouc84Sqer
A3 use pictures as prompts allow Ss to choose the direction for their writing
RT -----> Q5 How can we encourage a supportive writing culture in our classrooms?
A4: give Ss a chance to fight for what they believe through their writing
A4 contrived prompts give you contrived writing - if want to see your Ss thoughts let them show u what they think about
it's also called exquisite corpse writing, which is... not a good name for use in school!
A4a I turned 60 the other day. Yeah, rocks live that long. Anyway, go where the [lived] stories are. Interview an old ___. Write.
disagree-there's difference between curric (standards) & activity.1 activity could meet 5 diff Stand
A5: build a culture of caring peer critique. Give Ss sentence frames to support one another to start.
A4 I also find REAL things.Having them persuade? Write a letter to the school board persuading. Arguing? Respond to FB Trolls.
A4) Allow Ss to bring in reading they like (ex. Sports Illustrated, op-ed) and copy the style. Respond to reading & discussion
A5: Cultures of creativity take building and maintenance
A4 Authenticity is created when students write poetry, blogs, journals, scripts, paragraphs, stories published to an audience.
some of the best work comes from passion and a goal to make a stand on something.
Just got my Ss on their blogs last week- they are so excited to start writing https://t.co/1GnJMoiiLe
A4 Blogging brought such a unique element to writing like i have never seen before. They really write for audience!
A4: bringing real world problems relevant to the math content one teaches. Ex: social justice issues & stats.
A3B Start a that begins a story & see it flourish with student input. The collaboration & creativity would be amazing
A4. ..oddly, I think that our social media saturated world has created more, not fewer, opportunities and inspiration to write!
and understanding those who have passion in an opposing view leads to amazing thinking in the process.
you're the video king of course you'd find a way to link it to writing!
Picture prompts were my go-to tool when I taught elementary writing.
A5: The same way we encourage kids in all aspects of the classroom love, high expectations, encouraging failure as learning
A5. I think you need to start w/ building a supportive culture in your classroom period.
A5: Collaborative writing with Google Docs. MIND-BLOWING for how Ss will work together!
A5 Build a culture of bloggers! When students publish and comment on each other's writing you have the sweet spot!
A4: Connect with your Ss. Find out what is important to them. Then create assignments that embrace their personal experiences.
A3: Not just "write about whatever you want today," but choice within a topic, genre, or choice of topic while practicing a skill.
This is important b/c they see writing (esp. non-fiction) that is stylized and interest. Not 5 para. essay.
It's funny how many of them rebel just because it's different. They are GIVEN a prompt; they can't CREATE one
A5: Give writing time everyday.Teach grammar/editing/revising through their own writing, not worksheets
A3: choice is achieved with a great self awareness by Ss. Self awareness leads to meaningful choices in life and in writing.
I used to leave students on that one for 2 days and Ss would hound me for answers.
A5. And that it's okay if it's not perfect, and we learn from mistakes.
A5 Building a writing culture is simple: Write and share writing daily!
what is a contrived prompt?
A3: Choice of topic, how your writing is organized, genre, where you sit, how you sit, etc.
Thank you for the compliment.
I wouldn't think how anyone could disagree Shannon!
A5: make it safe, make it connected to the writers world, make it matter and on going.
The school is considering uniforms. Or cell phones in class etc. Situations that aren't real and honest
And show mistakes help our brains grow! https://t.co/s80rSAM3tB
A5 Building a writing culture is simple: Write and share writing daily!
Agree! Teaching grammar skills out of context doesn't work nearly as well. Need targeted revision of real writing.
If you were on an island what are the 3 things you would bring and why
. I want to try student blogging. Haven't looked into best site yet. On my to do list!
A5: Celebrate their writing! Share!
I find same thing. Blogging really grabs some ss & they just take-off. Working on media this wk
A5 don't underestimate the role anxiety may play in the procrastination some students demonstrate.
Right on. They need to feel safe to "fall on their face" in their writing attempts.
A5 just like Ts need to open their doors to get better at their craft Ss need to open their notebooks to get better at writing
A5:Get rid of worksheets, have students create their own graphic organizers, Ts modeling, daily shared writing, provide tools
A5 Hold writing conferences. Promote peer reviewing.
A5: Never put down a wrong answer. Highlight how it is a new way of looking at a problem and challenge to expand.
A5:Allowing mistakes,peer review,respect of ideas,openness to diverse voices,open mic,open audience, open minds
A4: writing to real audiences for a real purpose. Kids write to their fav authors, their family, me!
Probably 1 created by a psychometrician who can use it to level students against a bell curve.
A5: Create norms for sharing that the whole class agrees on. Share and celebrate student writing regularly
YES!! Thank you for that! https://t.co/hp7lYrr3Xz
A5 don't underestimate the role anxiety may play in the procrastination some students demonstrate.
I know! But there are people who think "kids can't read and write now" b/c they're always on their phones...y'know?
-but supported enough to not land on their nose
A5: Write lots. Use Docs to allow for Stu collaboration projects. That develops supportive norms
I overthought it all summer and decided to stay with It works really well for us.
Show students you're own drafts and mistakes
A5: Value what a Student is willing to share. Celebrate the courage to put an idea out there.
Ohh if we could make that stick at the district level!
A5: a supportive writing culture is a reflection of the overall culture. Don't expect it unless you teach and support it
A4 Use concepts of selecting from their interests. Let Ss interview industry professionals & present findings globally
A5: Don’t be judgmental. Meet Ss where they are an bring them forward.
you say that to a district level employee.
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
A4: Ss wrote abt divorce "why can't people stay together', described sitting in restaurant & mom learns of death of her parent.
Be careful of the privacy laws! I used to do kidblog, but now I think we are pushed to use edublogs
Q6 How can we establish writing routines?
Yes, Norms are essential to make sharing safe.
A5: Honor their brilliance, even when it looks different than what you are used to.
A5 -collaboration and creating a safe place! Our classroom is like vegas! hehe
there's no doubt in my mind it's why I HATED writing despite being pretty decent at it.
A5. A ritualized writing workshop process w/tons of celebrations of writing helped when I was teaching elementary.
You can build in writing to a daily schedule. Writing can be done across content areas.
I say that HAVING BEEN a district employee.
My son did this and I've had 2 students that just stopped with any writing. Tried to reduce the anxiety level and help.
A5 Make it a priority. I know there's always lots to do in class, but be sure to constantly give time for writing.
A6: We need to make it a priority and put it in our daily sched.
A6. Set expectations. Give Ss time to establish routines.
My son is writing and reading more now that he has graduated. He never thought he would do that for fun. https://t.co/dBxOnHv273
there's no doubt in my mind it's why I HATED writing despite being pretty decent at it.
Yes! And when I see trends, we can attack whole group w/ some fun mini-lsn. Otherwise, always embedded.
I need to do more of that this year!
A5 has this thing.. at start of a session someone is assigned the role of scapegoat. 2nd thought, bad idea.
I do know! I love responding with "What are they doing on their phones?" LOL, reading and writing:)
A5 By encouraging little writers and giving them lots of positive feedback.
and promote self-reflecting.
LOl...no, its brilliant! Next class, Urbie is the designated scapegoat! ;-) https://t.co/7LFlyPgW1m
A5 has this thing.. at start of a session someone is assigned the role of scapegoat. 2nd thought, bad idea.
Exactly! I have read some truly epic texts and FB posts from otherwise unenthused writers!
So many opportunities for classrooms to connect & share virtually!
Like this one Also a good example of being careful with autocorrect https://t.co/Y7YPA0VjAQ
Show students you're own drafts and mistakes
A6 practice practice practice -have Ss writing in all classes all content areas
I will jump on that bandwagon too! Meanngful feedback! Love for expanding horizons in collaboration
it's rough! Plus it can masquerade as writer's block--confusing to the grownups.
Great idea! What type of writing conferences have been successful for your students?
Nope, last year the absent person in class was scapegoat. The kids LOVED it. tech issues blamed on someone else
A6 Uhm.. writing routines? I could use some. My blogging could use some. Probably woulda finished my Phd if I had ‘em. Help!
You won't regret it. Aim for a period 1 week. It also makes genuinely cool homework. Kids LOVE it!
A6 routines are routines - set an expectation and practice with guidance gradually releasing responsibility
When they blog, I do my best to try and blog too. I also try and create examples for them
Yes! Make sure they know that writing is a process.
A6.High schoolers need to see the method to the routine -- the why behind the "we do this first, then this.." Buy in.
We did a student survey last year and found out 75% of our Ss visit other Ss blogs at home for fun!
A6: my fav are prepare for discussion papers. I give an article and ask Ss to extend or ask. Max 1 page. Bring n share.
A5: I could use some help with this in a hs math class. I asked the English TOSA, but nothing yet.
--------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
I just love that! The blog comes to life in the comment section, doesn't it!
you still have my favorite comment about that. What they tend to step on...
-----> Q7 How can we prepare students for successful peer to peer feedback?
I know right. It's like people think when they were young they used to bang out War and Peace every week of so:)
A6:Set expecation that Ss write every day.Model writing, share Ts ideas and thoughts be vulnerabe yet poised
Yes! I tried class blogging 1 yr; didn’t quite take off. Lessons learned, hope 2 start again this yr
A6 Remove barriers--first drafts can use voice to text software (think UDL)--it's writing class, not typing class!
A7: model how to build off of it and how the sum is greater than the parts.
A7: Ss need to know how to give and receive feedback from a healthy mindset. Don't skip that!
A6: I've tried a few things We do daily journals We start ALL writing HW in class is coming up which is exciting :)
A7 Have your students design the writing rubrics or criteria for success. Then they can better provide feedback to peers.
It does. We say your best and easiest "authentic audience" are parents and classmates.
A7: ask them what feed back would help them write better. Have them ask for the feedback they want.
A7 explicitly teach them how to provide quality feedback- use routines like critical friends
A7b Remind Ss we critique the writing, not the writer.
A6:with littles especially, consistent expectations are so important.I struggle sometimes with this! Always want to try new things!
A6: You can’t edit a blank page so schedule daily writing routines.
LOVE this idea! https://t.co/L3a3dtFqmk
A7 Have your students design the writing rubrics or criteria for success. Then they can better provide feedback to peers.
A7 socratic seminars are awesome way to encourage thoughtful discussion - include them for student feedback on writing
A6: Ss should write daily in a variety of subject areas - not just Language Arts.
A7: celebrate courage to share an opinion or viewpoint that may be different. find hidden genius in writing.
A7: Start small. Don’t have to fix everything in every paper. One powerful comment can make a big difference. Teach ss this too.
Write everyday about a math topic. Ask them to write about how they think through a problem. Short consistent writing
A7a What are the odds today’s popular movies, books, shows were perfect on the 1st draft? Expose Ss to early [or fake] drafts +
A6: Build stamina for writing, keep writing 5, 10, 15 min. Utilize mentor texts to focus on a writing strategy ❤️mentortexts
I often do a Socratic seminar on a thorny topic first, then have kids write abt it -- they're much more grounded.
writing is a way of knowing "How do I know what I think until I write it" https://t.co/cn9yMVjMEf
A6: Ss should write daily in a variety of subject areas - not just Language Arts.
A7. Teach Ss the difference between revision and editing, and model how to do both
A7: Encouragement, support, feedback, repeat!!
Peer feedback must be based on what the writer requests of peers. Can also try reviewer specialization. Creates focus, purpose.
Q7 Skills are explicitly taught when we comment on each others work, plus kindness and respect are the norm
A7: Peer feedback needs to be scaffolded & practiced I do enjoy 's Peer function as it allows anonymous & different types
A7 This is the BEST video to help students understand the purpose of feedback. Austin's butterfly. https://t.co/Qkf3p4syHn
A7b Then Ss critique others’ early drafts to get an appreciation for criticism n editing. It’s easier to critique others, right?
With healthy doses of encouragement and support! https://t.co/T78LUUwpch
A7: Encouragement, support, feedback, repeat!!
Yes! Getting over "it's good" comments is key. Model difference between throw away feedback & critical friend.
I have to go =( Looking forward to the next one.
That's where blogs are awesome too, because you can use exemplars easily from previous years.
Blogging comments - I shared this video with my class and parents. Both are doing a great job w comments. https://t.co/WDDzQjgp6u
A7: Use Google Docs to collaborate on writing. Relate to Ss using tech. Model useful feedback
A6 Allow Ss to demand their writing ADVENTURES each day with creative approaches: background music, video, etc.
My entire Master's thesis was about this.
Ugh I agree! This drives me crazy!
A7: Start with oral feedback. Have them simply talk with one another about the piece. Provide reflective questions if you want
Thanks and good night, ! I have to finish planning a writing experience for next week now. :)
Can you have them write multi-step word problems?
-----> Q8 How can we empower our students to publish their work?
--------------------> Q8 coming soon from
A7 Culture of the classroom. Cannot peer edit if they don’t have safety with their peers. NEVER PEER GRADE. Self Yes, Peer no.
A7 publish to what? in the class....maybe the hall...maybe then a blog...perhaps anonymously ground them - b4 u give them wings
RT -----> Q8 How can we empower our students to publish their work?
I teach that we always want feedback that will further the piece. Push the writer.
A8. I feel we start them with blogging and commenting on each other's blogs.
A7: Develop peer-to-peer feedback with tools like Docs or Slides. Ss comment & collaborate. Also use .
A8: anybody ever done quadblogging?
For bonus points don't use the word blog
A5: conferences, "author's chair," telling kids it's ok if it's not perfect yet!
A8. If possible, create a relationship with other blogging students at another school/district
A8: Start with walled garden like Seesaw and paper books.
A8 I run the school paper, so that's easy We talk about writing to papers, magazines, & more! When sts are published we party
A8: Ss loved collaborative bound book with StudentTreasures.
hahahahahaha. Make it a movie then post it to you blog. ;)
Well I'm not sure this answer will go down so well, but we don't give ours a choice, so it becomes cultures.
A7: Model giving positive, respectful, specific, meaningful feedback before asking kids to.
A8: have done blogging-ish activities in google slides. Safety of classroom and controlled environment. made it.
A7:Guide Ss through process, model feedback expectations, create norms and help Ss understand the value in a safe enivoronment
They probably don’t have the examples to do it yet. Get them some science papers where the authors describe the math.
I started watching it and then totally forgot about the chat! oops. can't wait to watch it.
A8: Always take essays to the next level after writing - publish w/ digital storytelling. YouTube, Vimeo. Or to Drive for some.
Haha, behave Mr Patterson:)
A8 One of the BEST projects from 5th grade was using design thinking to write/publish a book for the 1st grd
I'd like to know more too.
A7: Make sure they understand the difference between constructive and destructive criticism.
I've had trouble w Ss not wantg 2 read other's work. They want all 2 read theirs & comment but not reciprocate.
I know right?! It is so good.
Awesome! Always model the desired behavior! https://t.co/2cI4E88w7T
A7: Model giving positive, respectful, specific, meaningful feedback before asking kids to.
Like it! Want to come to my school and share? :)
Any good place to start for video storytelling? Resources? I need to move beyond the blog.
is there any value in having others review the work of a student?
A8: Blogs are key here. Use . Use CC graphics to spice up publication. Add video interviews.
She does this during the lesson studies.
Thanks for the reminder! I used that last year.
I make it a graded task 4 class participation points. Often, once they get started with one, they want to read others
A8 Make publishing exciting yet normal, set the expectation and start with a gentel audience such as family or other Ts
With younger students, you can do that all together first on posts you have picked.
My kiddos love WeVideo. They can work at school or home, on browser or app. Piloting paid accounts, but free good 2
A8: build confidence! Patience! I had a 1st grader, most amazing writer, always passed on chances to share. Finally she did!
I really love using Adobe Spark videos- they have scaffolded templates even for kids who need it https://t.co/Lo3YkF3ASm
Any good place to start for video storytelling? Resources? I need to move beyond the blog.
And that it's more than finding spelling errors! You have to give them the right guidance
We must be trending since we are getting spammed. Beware friends.
A8 Perhaps take writing and make an educreation, chatterpix, greenscreen, Scratch JR. Use multi media as a publishing method
I love it...will have to modify to make it happen here..thanks for getting the wheels to turn!
A8a Make an anthology of a themed student project.. ask local weekly paper to print excerpts. PDF it?
Lots of ways to write ebooks, like LittleBirdTales.
How can teachers get better at writing?
What devices to you have?
Join your local writing project!
A8: with littles, class books. & start with quick shares: "wow word," "golden sentence." Everyone shares=not scary!
Write, write, write. And read, read, read. Always surprises me when Ts say "Not a reader, not a writer."
Also love getting kids to free write on The images spark so much inspiration and a great way to publish
Peer review is needed to build accepting criticism and foster ideation. Having other Ss place a grade hurts trust.
A8: Provide opportunities to share writing: blogging using , creating class books, sharing work with peers
you are awesome. Let me know how it turns out.
--------------------> Q9 coming soon from
--------------------> Q9 coming soon from
I used last year to make a movie. Gr8 writing resource!
-----> Q9 Give an example of a writing lesson that proved successful for your students.
A8: Start with a class blog (in elem) does this. When ppl respond, the Ss get excited & want to publish on their own.
Love using - especially w/ ELs! They love the images to inspire writing.
Hey We have a whole channel on things you can use blogs for beyond "blogging" https://t.co/afUBdtSvej Hope some find it helpful
A9a A while ago I taught multimedia design at a trade school. I designed an authentic assessment where Ss responded to an RFP..
Thanks for sharing this resource!
Good question. I think that having a website and/or blog with regular updates develops the teacher's writing.
A7: prepare them for peer feedback by 1st building relationships with peers and help them understand how to self asses first
Can they then embed those back into their portfolios/drives somehow?
A9b Ss had to read and identify what the client wanted & write how they would meet their need. Practical engages.
A9: Most powerful lesson with 3rd grade was collaborative writing. Single, simple sentence went crazy. we laughed till we cried.
Do students need adobe spark accounts? Or how do you manage? (I have 3rd grade)
A9 Using Design Thinking in writing is really powerful as I shared in my Q8. The kids had total buy in!
is now trending in USA, ranking 32
A9a: Ss still remember it. I let them use the F word (fart) and from there madness ensued.
My pleasure Jessica. Takes a friend and I hours, so we love to know they are helping people.
Like everything else, practice, practice, practice. Create stuff!
A9b: but they still remember the adjectives used to describe the fart. *smh*
Gotta run. This was insightful and helpful. Thanks everyone. Have a good week.
A9 Here's the "choose your own prompt" lesson from 2015 It was a risk for me & I loved what my sts gave me https://t.co/lGvHRYroip
A8: Had students use a wordless picture book and they wrote the story
We LOVE Storybird and we have embedded in our Kidblogs.
A8: build a portfolio that can be shared to others
That's great. It's so much better when Ss can keep their content in 1 place.
I will share with my ELA staff tomorrow. Thanks Doc.
By writing more themselves. Model what you want to see.
I wouldn't have thought about using slides for this....but I am now.
Absolutely! I love the idea of no formal grade on the paper, only on the process but that is crazy talk!
A8: last year I started narrative writing using CSFirst Storytelling coding club. They animated all parts of a story 1st.
Fantastic idea! Ss writing in social media is a great way to bridge interest, global connections & authentic feedback
In light of tomorrow’s 102F in LA, dress appropriately & hydrate. Thank you for the writing ideas. Nini.
I totally agree! Even design process works fantastically for writing (videos/music). Creating is creating I guess
Thanks for a good chat tonight. Once again, I have found inspiration with what everyone shared. Got to leave early tonight.
Are you kids good with iMovie?
Thanks for joining the conversation!
A9 found poetry from non fiction text about bullying connected to reading Yaqui Delgado during the
Teachers become better writers by reading, practicing, being thoughtful writers. :)
A9: we wrote a movie that was amazing! has a few templates. It's now 'pay what u feel it's worth'
Thanks for joining tonight everyone. You all are so inspiring. Have a wonderful week!
Love found poetry! Ss use pages from novels, nonfiction, newspapers, etc. Such great results!
Great chat tonight. Thanks for the writing exercise.
She has the best video on YouTube for making comments made by her students!
A9: I had my 7th grade SS Ss write the summation speech for the trial of Joan of Arc. It could be the prosecution or defense.
Thanks for an awesome chat! Lots to chew on!
I just wish we had more choice in words on the poetry part.
I was creating magnetic poetry for our K-1 students in slides....until someone stole my pc and lost proggie
Then call me crazy:) Or weight it. 98% process and 2% to final result:)
