Alright everybody! Welcome to tonight’s #pechat! I’ll be moderating for the next hour.
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:01 PM EDT
If you’re new to #pechat, here’s a 101 video to help get you started: https://t.co/ynZdPOfigt
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:03 PM EDT
Basically, I’ll be asking questions (Qs) to which I’d love to hear your answers (As). Let’s keep it tidy (Q1->A1) #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:03 PM EDT
Most importantly, don’t forget to include the #pechat hashtag in your tweets so that others can follow along and learn from YOU!
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:04 PM EDT
Let’s get this going with a warm up question: Q0. Where are you from and what were your students learning today? #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:06 PM EDT
A0. My name is Joey and I’m from Montreal, Canada. My G2/G3s were working on striking w/ a long-handled implement (grip/orientation) #pechat
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A0: Elyse from Albany NY. No school today, but starting some frisbee and disc golf tomorrow #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:11 PM EDT
Hey Elyse! Great to have you here! #pechat
    In reply to @TheMsLoughlin
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:15 PM EDT
So tonight’s chat will be a little different: I’ll be asking YOUR questions. Each Q has been submitted by someone from Team #PhysEd #pechat
  • baugha May 29 @ 7:15 PM EDT
April Baugh, Linn Elementary, Dodge City KS! We are out of school! #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:16 PM EDT
Q1. What is your opinion in regards to having students get changed for #physed class? (Q from @VoetbalPompey) #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:16 PM EDT
Hey April! Thanks for tuning in! Out for the summer or the day? #pechat
    In reply to @baugha
  • baugha May 29 @ 7:18 PM EDT
A1: My Ss don't change. Easy for me to say, but I wonder if we allowed Ss to make the choice? #pechat
  • baugha May 29 @ 7:19 PM EDT
Out for the summer! Last Day was May 24th (we were one of the last schools in the state) #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:20 PM EDT
A1) if grading is supposed to measure knowledge of content and skill changing your clothes is not a part of that #pechat 1/2
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:20 PM EDT
A1. IMO, just like everything else, the whole “changing for PE” issue has to be tied back to a strong sense of WHY. #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:20 PM EDT
A1.2 I want Ss to always be thinking of including physical activity in their day, & having good, active wear is important for that. #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:22 PM EDT
A1.3 It’s about developing the mindset of “in case I get to be active today, I want to be ready for it” #pechat
  • lfpalabama May 29 @ 7:22 PM EDT
A1 I give the choice but NEVER part of their grade. Some lack self confidence & I don't want requiring dressing out to be barrier #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:22 PM EDT
A1.4 That said, it’s not part of my assessment or grading, and I wouldn’t sit a student out for not bringing their active clothes. #pechat
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:23 PM EDT
A1.5 instead, I would work with them to figure out why they are forgetting (or just not bringing) clothes and come up with solutions #pechat
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:24 PM EDT
A1) I tend to think changing for grade can be insensitive to the needs of some Ss. But I teach k-5 so I don't live that struggle #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:26 PM EDT
I agree. I also don’t think there is any research supporting the need to have students change for PE. #pechat
    In reply to @TheMsLoughlin
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:27 PM EDT
I wonder if, in some situations, Ts who are really focused on it are so because they’re not sure what else to assess #pechat
    In reply to @TheMsLoughlin
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:28 PM EDT
It’s why we wear sneakers to @USGames socials #amirite #pechat
    In reply to @TheMsLoughlin, @USGames
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:28 PM EDT
Q2. Are there any benefits in regards to separating genders in HS #physed? #pechat (Q via @PhysEdFreak)
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:31 PM EDT
A1. In my #PhysEd classes, changing is always optional. I changed my policy in January as an experiment & told Ss why. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:31 PM EDT
Get out of my brain! I was thinking how many classroom Ts use preparation as a part of the grade, but why? #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:32 PM EDT
I am always prepared to dance. 😜😂 #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @USGames
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:32 PM EDT
that’s a legit point. TBH, it’s not something I have dealt with at my school (Ss aren’t allowed to wear flip flops) #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:33 PM EDT
A1+ I want my Ss to be comfortable being in class. For many, changing made them uncomfortable. It also wasted so much time. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:33 PM EDT
A1 as Ss get older it's more of a necessity. As adults we don't exercise in jeans or formal wear, so why expect Ss to? #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:34 PM EDT
Sorry I'm late to the party ....Mike from NY, I teach HS #pechat
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:34 PM EDT
A1++ I had periodic check-ins w/Ss to see if they still liked the policy, if it was working for them, and I always got a huge YES. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:35 PM EDT
how would you assess that? Think of how that outcome is unpacked and assessed. #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:36 PM EDT
@deandudley has a lot of research about this topic. If I remember correctly, I believe MVPA is higher in co-ed classes. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @PhysEdFreak, @deandudley
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:36 PM EDT
The outcome states identify not practice or demonstrate. Students should know that best practice is sneakers. #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey, @JoeyFeith
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:36 PM EDT
Same here, why penalize a kid and deprive them of PA for something that prob wasn't there fault to begin with. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:36 PM EDT
A2. @deandudley has research about this topic. If I remember correctly, I believe MVPA is higher in co-ed classes. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @PhysEdFreak, @deandudley
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:36 PM EDT
I’m curious as to how they reacted to that change. #pechat #sharingiscaring
    In reply to @GHSaysRockChalk
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:37 PM EDT
A2+ But I've also attended sessions where organizations talked about the benefits of single gender activities for HS females. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @PhysEdFreak, @deandudley
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:38 PM EDT
@VoetbalPompey Ss = Students, Ts = Teachers, PL = Physical Literacy… it’s #pechat shorthand. Should have clarified at start! Sorry!
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:38 PM EDT
From a comfort standpoint, my Ss 1st period HATE forgetting their clothes cause no one wants to be in sweaty clothes all day #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @TheMsLoughlin
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:39 PM EDT
MAN!! Hard hitting questions tonight!! #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @PhysEdFreak
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:39 PM EDT
They loved it. When I presented the idea & explained Why I had fist pumps, head nods, cheers, and thank you's. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:39 PM EDT
I teach ES, so I don’t get those complaints as much as in HS. ES kids are always sweaty. By mid-June, some evaporate. #pechat
    In reply to @ZachWrightPE
  • jennifer_signor May 29 @ 7:40 PM EDT
Q1A...what if they are wearing wrong footwear (high heels, sandals, etc)? #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:40 PM EDT
What about changes in behaviour? Did the number of dressed out kids go up, down or stay the same? #pechat
    In reply to @GHSaysRockChalk
  • BodePE May 29 @ 7:40 PM EDT
Unfortunately many teachers teach they way they were taught. Grades were based on participation + dress, not what was taught/learned #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @TheMsLoughlin
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:41 PM EDT
I've gotten TREMENDOUSLY more engagement when I separate genders, but internally I don't know if I like or. Maybe it's just me #pechat
    In reply to @GHSaysRockChalk, @JoeyFeith, @deandudley
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:41 PM EDT
Most don't. But 99% of my Ss wear sneakers, athletic shorts, or leggings to school every single day. #pechat
    In reply to @PhysEdFreak, @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:42 PM EDT
Plus, our 6th graders do not change at all & do not have access to the locker rooms, so Ss know that what they wear is what.... #pechat
    In reply to @PhysEdFreak, @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:42 PM EDT
well that’s a safety issue. My students all know that my #1 job is to keep them safe. #pechat
    In reply to @jennifer_signor
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:42 PM EDT
they will participate in anyways. The select few who chose to change only changed their shirts. #pechat
    In reply to @PhysEdFreak, @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:43 PM EDT
I don’t really see it at my school, but if I did it would result in a modified task/role in the lesson #pechat
    In reply to @jennifer_signor
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:43 PM EDT
that usually serves as a strong enough deterrent to avoid those situations (worst I get are flats) #pechat
    In reply to @jennifer_signor
  • BodePE May 29 @ 7:43 PM EDT
Sadly I know a few classroom teachers that use participation as a grade. #pechat
    In reply to @TheMsLoughlin, @JoeyFeith
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:44 PM EDT
My ES students go for 75min. But yeah, they don’t get as stinky. Again, all of it comes back to tying it into the WHY #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:47 PM EDT
feeling confident, being healthy, getting the most out of each day. #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey

    Q3. What are strategies/tactics you have used to create a classroom culture/growth mindset in K-5 #physed (Q via @corsophysed) #pechat
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:50 PM EDT
About 85 Ss (7th grade)...2-3 would change. Behavior, engagement, happiness, and willingness to be active increased for sure. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • BodePE May 29 @ 7:50 PM EDT
A3 In HS I use team building and adv. ed activities at beginning of class to develop culture/GM. Could be used in K-5. #pechat
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:51 PM EDT
And I totally know that those things really can't be measured. It's just based off of my observations & convos with kids. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:51 PM EDT
A3 Be the Change!! Scaffold to ensure success early and often so when Ss struggle with more complex tasks they feel they can do it. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @corsophysed
  • GHSaysRockChalk May 29 @ 7:51 PM EDT
I have middle schoolers (ages 11-14) for 40 minutes every day. #pechat
    In reply to @VoetbalPompey, @PhysEdFreak, @JoeyFeith
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:52 PM EDT
I have no issue with an amazing teacher trusting her gut! That’s awesome Sarah! #pechat
    In reply to @GHSaysRockChalk
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:53 PM EDT
A3 also build a "yet" culture. I can't do _____ YET. Celebrate risk takers and super celebrate successes. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @corsophysed
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:53 PM EDT
A3) I start the year with Adventure Activities and the @ClassDojo GM series. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @corsophysed, @ClassDojo
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:53 PM EDT
must have gone a long way in telling your Ss “Hey, I care more about you you and your learning that old rules” #pechat
    In reply to @GHSaysRockChalk
  • jennifer_signor May 29 @ 7:53 PM EDT
A1. Current policy G5-12 is no participating if not changed. I'll be mod. next year 5-8 to see differences. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • PhysEdFreak May 29 @ 7:54 PM EDT
A3 developing that family atmosphere early is HUGE! #pechat
    In reply to @BodePE
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:54 PM EDT
I can’t help but think that, for all of those Ss sitting out, that’s just a missed opportunity. #pechat
    In reply to @jennifer_signor
  • MA_PETeacher May 29 @ 7:54 PM EDT
A1: I think it should be a choice, unless of course, it is school mandated.Ss should learn healthy habits + change, but as a choice.#pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • TheMsLoughlin May 29 @ 7:55 PM EDT
A3.2 I'm looking into the book "Yes! And..." to develop some better debriefing strategies and making students at ease with mistakes #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @corsophysed
  • jennifer_signor May 29 @ 7:55 PM EDT
I believe some don't want to participate so they don't change...although they won't admit it. Not sure other staff will agree. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @VoetbalPompey
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:57 PM EDT
well maybe there’s a lot to be looked into there. Ss purposefully sabotaging their PE. Doesn’t seem normal does it? #pechat
    In reply to @jennifer_signor
  • jennifer_signor May 29 @ 7:58 PM EDT
A2. We do both depend on the unit. Competitive/athletic girls usually ok coed. Others not so much. Swim unit always split by gender. #pechat
    In reply to @JoeyFeith, @PhysEdFreak
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:58 PM EDT
Just because I need to head out… I think focus on MVPA in PE is short sighted. #pechat
    In reply to @BodePE
  • JoeyFeith - Moderator May 29 @ 7:59 PM EDT
We need to be thinking of the bigger picture and #physed’s role in that. #pechat
