I had a marvelous weekend - thanks to your tremendous efforts in being the guest moderator of #BookCampPD on Saturday morning. You're MARVELOUS!! #txeduchat
Please introduce yourself and tell use where you're connecting from tonight. We'll be using the Q1-A1 format to post and don't forget to add the #txeduchat tag to your posts! Question No. 1 up in just a moment.
#txeduchat A1: I loved trying out new tech tools. Like mini-pilots. Students would be my “beta” testers. We also did lots of reflection...(I taught writing.)
A1: in mom mode, I get frustrated with how little my kids are doing because with school ending earlier, they're cramming all of the field trips, celebrations, etc into the 8 school days after testing. #txeduchat
A1 Our teachers are revisiting priority or weak TEKS and trying out a new way to teach. Testing a new lesson for the 18-19 school year with current Ss. #txeduchat
A1: Stations that keep students moving from space to space while reviewing are good; we also had game day where students rotated to different game formats depending on the class. #txeduchat
A1. Ss like to share what they know...so giving them lots of ways to voice their ideas has been key. I plan with Ts so suggesting S voice platforms/opportunities has worked well. #txeduchat
#txeduchat this is a big week in my room. Monday I bring my #BELIEVE sign to school and get selfies with all my Ss. Tuesday I will cut out the #BELIEVE selfies that were posted on my wall since the fall. I will give them to the kids. They are also coloring #PentagonT's
A1: As a T, provide Ss with an opportunity to demonstrate mastery or learn knowledge for next year. As an AP, challenge Ss to finish the year off better than they started. Positively impact a peer. #txeduchat
Since I’m Literacy focused my main goal is to encourage students to fall so deeply in love with Reading they will do it all summer!! 📚 now I help teachers do this - thematic lit circles - book talk videos - tweeting authors - etc! #txeduchat
#txeduchat Wait until you have a senior!!! Exempt from most exams...senior walk at elementaries, Senior Field day, graduation rehearsal, & no school this Friday for my senior. Why is she even going to school this week?
Yes, adding student voice is key. What are your thoughts on adding a little friendly competition to the mix? It can really heighten engagement and make your life a lot easier;). #txeduchat
You may have heard that we're giving away a copy of @SerenaPariser 's new book, "Real Talk About Classroom Management" tonight. Some lucky chat participant will win it at the end of the chat tonight. #txeduchat
I noticed that #G2Great is going to be discussing summer reading during this chat this week. I bet that would be one you'd be interested in. #Txeduchat
Since I’m Literacy focused my main goal is to encourage students to fall so deeply in love with Reading they will do it all summer!! 📚 now I help teachers do this - thematic lit circles - book talk videos - tweeting authors - etc! #txeduchat
A1- I’ve been given my Ss so much choice. They know how to show what they’ve learned in so many ways at this point. No need for@me to tell them how, even in Kinders! #txeduchat
I love the idea of connecting with authors over social media. That makes the reading REAL for the students. Have you ever had an author do a Skype interview with a class? #txeduchat
A2: I not longer have a classroom, but do have 20-25 students I see 2 times a week for Mathletics. The best management is always being prepared and engaging in content. #txeduchat
Oh I can only imagine! at 7th grade, mine has 2 1/2 days left... field trips on the first two days, and then 10 minute classes and an assembly the last day. #whybother#txeduchat
#txeduchat Wait until you have a senior!!! Exempt from most exams...senior walk at elementaries, Senior Field day, graduation rehearsal, & no school this Friday for my senior. Why is she even going to school this week?
Seems to me this comes from long standing traditions in many places. Think of the lost instructional time. Great place for a shift to take place. #Txeduchat
A2- next year I’m looking to add in more parent involvement. When we have consistent language and expectations between school and home it makes a huge difference! #txeduchat
Competition is great! Our Ts are connecting across our district to share what their kids know/what their kids produce. Ss are now ramping up their work/holding themselves more accountable for their learning. #txeduchat
A2: One if my fav things was “circles” that we started with Restorative Justice. The chance for open conversation and feedback with students was AMAZING and improved our classroom culture. #txeduchat
A2 Our high school designated tech areas as "Green Zones" to alert other Ts and Admins that technology was in use...Avoided the confrontation s about cell phone use when not permitted in class... #txeduchat
Justin, I love your idea of positively impacting a peer. Have you every thought of doing social goal setting in you classroom? Students hold each other accountable for goals. #txeduchat
Not in my personal classroom (been an education specialist for 8 years now), but I have arranged them for schools and helped teachers! It’s so much fun!! #txeduchat
A2: #txeduchat one thing that had always worked well for me is setting expectations from the start Clear and direct expectations for behavior and academics.
#txeduchat A2 28 years of teaching and I have made this diagram that illustrates how I teach my Ss to #AlwaysBelieve and to learn INTRINSICALLY. #ItWorks "The Story of Always Believe" will be published this Fall!
a1: If I were in the classroom right now, I'd have them creating a "what I learned this year" letter. I'd probably also have them do FlipGrid messages to play for next year's students on the first day... or have them create memes for my class #txeduchat
A2. This is a great time to have a coach come and co-teach.. demonstrate .. and try new management strategies. We coaches need to be in the “reality” to support. #txeduchat
@Seesaw has been a game changer! I send home how to videos in addition to student work. I have also been working on parents commenting with each other to build a parent community. More connections =more support and in a military area that is pivotal #txeduchat
A2: Parents were always my "best friends" in the classroom. My Ss always knew that their parents were only a phone call, text, or Remind message away. I called it the Partnership of Peace. It worked! #txeduchat
A2. A great thing to look at over the summer is how much 'you' time happened in your class over the year compared to how much 'student' time. Student time should always be higher! #txeduchat
A2: Parents were always my "best friends" in the classroom. My Ss always knew that their parents were only a phone call, text, or Remind message away. I called it the Partnership of Peace. It worked! #txeduchat
Hi #txeduchat! Valerie from FL sneaking in for a few! A1: We did a unit on Media Literacy when I taught H.S. reading. Ss created advertisements using PPT and music and presented them to the class. Fun!
I have a YouTube channel with more details, but essentially I focus on teaching SEL skills and building relationships all focused on where Ss are developmentally.I look at behavior as I would content-something to teach and scaffold, not punish #txeduchat
Great ideas! A "Top Ten List of ....." wouldn't that be fun to create as a student if you were first given examples to get your creative juices flowing? #txeduchat
A2 Love Having a st greeter each morning- st greeter choose the next greeter according to who had the best handshake, eye contact, and greeted them back. They also walk in to music and can talk during the 1st song. Then it’s straight to work. #txeduchat
Yes, definitely. Also, tech stations, quick maker station, and the best - student designed stations. I find students are the most engaged with the stations they make and implement. #txeduchat
I agree. In pre-k we've been voting on different activities and different manipulatives to use. I want them to be able to use their favorites before we say goodbye. #txeduchat
A3: Building relationships in the classroom is the key to reaching the unmotivated S in the classroom. When we know our Ss we can relate learning to their interests. #txeduchat
Jennifer,
What great ideas. I think it would be really beneficial if you took the letters and made them into a book (iphoto, etc.) and put a copy in your classroom library.. if you were still in the classroom. Maybe another teacher can use your idea! #txeduchat
Our campus is half-new school and half-old school...The latter seems to have the most weight when new instructional practices are put in...We are also 1:1 with Chromebooks...Most of the old-school says don't bring those out in my class...So maybe in a few years #Txeduchat
A3: #txeduchat always make connections. Don't give up! find what they like. If they have a talent, use it and praise them for a job well done. Slowly, they will attempt other things and we will continue to praise so they won't revert.
Some of my tribe @CentralCabotpK4 are beginning to focus on restorative type practices, and mindfulness. Some are going through @ConsciousD learning this summer. I love the mindset of it, because it is empowering kids to use their words and self regulate. #txeduchat
Kristi,
Yes, restorative practices can also mold students into becoming human beings ready to take on the world when they are older. It's a popular proactive management practice here in California. #txeduchat
A3- it’s all about the relationships- even with my Kinders I look for their passions and https://t.co/kA3gktDm2W one wants to work for an artificial “carrot”.While it takes more time to find each Ss passion it takes less time than remediation #txeduchat
#txeduchat A3 Do not underestimate a continuous #POSITIVE environment! It will inspire Ss. Also I try my best to have my Ss describe me with the Fruits of the Spirit in the end of the year. #BELIEVE in them!
A3: Never. give. up. It may take months or most of the year, but continue to search for what interests them, and find ways to empower their voice. Maybe they haven't found their niche yet. It's there somewhere. #txeduchat
A3 Make the positive phone calls and showcase them as much as possible for any little things they do...Teachers that try new tech get recognized in a weekly newsletter and usually a years subscription to their tech tool of choice #txeduchat
A1. For me, it’s all about choice, choice, choice at the end of the year. Book clubs, a survey of what is one thing that you were disappointed we didn’t learn about or read. It goes far. #txeduchat
Don’t give up on them! When we went 1:1 CBs, there were “No Chromebooks” signs on classroom doors 🤦🏼♀️ but they eventually saw the benefit and let go. #SmallSteps#txeduchat
A3: These simple things have worked every. single. year. (1) Learn their names (2) Learn at least one of their interests (3) ask them about their interests from time to time...when you get to know them and they know you care, lack of motivation becomes a nonissue. #txeduchat
A3 this is all about relationships! It’s about genuine care and awareness of your students. Knowing your students is the key to motivating them! I have three kids - all completely different and have very different motivators! Don’t underestimate the relationship #txeduchat
Kind of thought it was a general blanket to avoid full implementation of GSuite and other purchased tech tools...The failure this year becomes next year's opportunity! #Txeduchat
A2. I think greeting students at the door with a high five or a fist bump. It goes so far and changes the tenor of the class. It takes time though. #txeduchat
A4: Restorative and trauma informed practices are great for all kids. I think the key is flexibility, and knowing that what works with one student, may be a disaster with another. We continue to try and invest. Kids notice that, even when we mess up. #txeduchat
#txeduchat A3: The first time I realized that many of my students actually preferred to be in school (even summer school) over staying home, changed how I approached them all year. Different needs.
If you're lurking around in the background tonight, go ahead and post a comment or introduce yourself to get in on the drawing for a free copy of @SerenaPariser 's book at the end of the chat. #txeduchat
Heather,
I love this. Musical cues for talking/not talking work so well in the classroom. What type of music do you play? What grade is this? #txeduchat
A4. Event the most difficult Ss want to be heard and understood. It has already been mentioned...build the relationship...connect with the kid. Once they see that they are valued even in the midst of their issues, they will open up. #txeduchat
A4- The “difficult” student is often the one with the unmet “Maslow” need. Build that relationship, fill in the need, watch the “Blooms” soar. #txeduchat
A4: #txeduchat The same way I will take time to make academic accommodations for my students, I take the time to me emotional accommodations. If i know it's something that they really struggle with in class, i make sure to be accessible and compliment them on their efforts.
#txeduchat Agree- For my 3rd Graders it’s a side hug , pat on the back, or high five/ fist bump with their name on the way into the room and also when they leave to go to their next class.
If Teachers have access to SmartBoards, then that is the required software for creating and using lessons...it's really cool...Free trial for 45 days...When you purchase a Smartboard you get a years subscription...Interactive and hands on...Totally recommend!! #txeduchat
A3: My first principal "required" us to do 2 positives for every 1 negative. So 1 negative phone call home = 2 positive ones. 1 negative note = 2 complimentary ones. The Positive Recognition was impactful. PBIS works & motivates. #txeduchat
A4: From day one if you have created a classroom of inclusion, acceptance, and support the “difficult” students will not be considered “difficult” to you! #txeduchat
A3 Why is student unmotivated? I talk to them - what are goals? concerns? Challenges? Education is about giving yourself tools for your future success and making sense of your world; talk to parents or better, parent and child together. #txeduchat#frenshare
#txeduchat A4 There is a story about this in my book "The Story of Always Believe" coming out this fall. NEVER EVER give up on your Ss. BE POSITIVE ALL YEAR! Your may not reach them in the year you teach them, but you will plant seeds they will remember. #AlwaysBelieve
Before I forget, we are sending PNW love and light to Santa Fe HS. This generation will change the world. We have been reading with them about Katniss, Tris, and Thomas. #txeduchat
oh yes, learning names is key. That's why I start with how to do this a few different ways on the first page of my book. I'm so glad you agree! #txeduchat
A4: Piggybacking on my last answer...taking the time to get to know "difficult" students makes them less "difficult." Plus, I've found that these Ss are usually bored out of their minds. Bottom line: Ss rise to the level of expectations. Expect more...you'll get it. #txeduchat
Great idea! Just getting a group of Teachers started on @Flipgrid where we are hoping to have a student shout out section for our website...Shout outs for teachers, students, parents, admins, everyone! #Txeduchat
A5: Some kids may need informal behavior plans to help kids replace behaviors with desirable ones. That requires some preset rewards the kid is interested in. Just as we intervene for academics, we intervene and put supports in place for behavior nees. #txeduchat
Tosh, yes and often times these are students that lack structure and consistency in the home, so prefer to stay in school where these needs can be met. #txeduchat
A5: #txeduchat i do us rewards but not all rewards requires a lot of effort. If they are doing a great job i will reward with something simple like laying on the floor or taking shoes off, or a note home. They love these.
Awesome. It's SO important...I focus on the correct pronunciation and I avoid giving kids nicknames because "I just can't pronounce it." As I have a name that some find hard to pronounce, I know the importance of getting it right and how much it means to students. #txeduchat
A5 For some reason my 3rd-5th grade Literacy Ss think that my Exit tickets/questions are a reward! They are extremely bummed when I don't give them one! #txeduchat
A5- No way! I don’t reward for good grades, the learning is enough and studies shows it lowers motivation and ups the required reward. Same holds true with behavior. I am there to TEACH. I will support and teach SEL, not provide incentives. #ditchtheclips#txeduchat
A5: Prefer intrinsic to extrinsic But will establish rewards based on accomplishing goals. Ss set goals then earn reading with a pillow, preferred activities, new pencil, office supplies, etc. Whole class can earn game time or extra recess for group goal. #txeduchat
A5. I’m interested to hear what works with high schoolers. I think random rewards and narrating the classroom for doing good work is helpful. And Hot Cheetos and Takis. #txeduchat
Yes, teaching is ALL about relationships. I find that asking questions and figuring out what interests them BESIDES SCHOOL is a powerful way to let them understand that you "get them." #txeduchat
A5: Here is my classwide behavior scale. You can see Spiderman on 0 and Superman on 4. They represent my two classes. Once they reach "Super Class" they vote on they get a 15 minute cartoon clip and goldfish or popcorn. #txeduchat
A5: I have seen the Positive Behavior System #txeduchat by Dr. Randy Sprick, Discipline in the Secondary Classroom work great with HS Ss! Coaches support teachers in the classroom while learning to implement. 😀
A5: I love really short-term incentives to add some spark to the class, but I want Ss to develop intrinsic motivation - giving students a choice in how they learn may be the best incentive of all. #txeduchat
A5 I think Ss respond best to being recognized for behaviors/actions that are beyond the regular daily classroom expectations. They feel valued and special for their extra efforts. #txeduchat
Some classrooms have charts displayed to identify the status of kids’ behaviors, choices, and/or mistakes.
What if...
The school’s office, lounge, or workroom had charts displaying the behaviors, choices, mistakes of staff?
Would that add value to the culture?
#edchat
#txeduchat A5 Takes ALOT of patience, but I maintain my discipline through positive reinforcement. Tell EVERY student EVERY day they are special. When it works the love felt in the room is simply amazing. #AlwaysBelieve
What is teachers had to clip up or down for our infractions? It could hang in the lounge by the Coke Machine. Every late RtI form = move the clip to yellow. #funnynotfunny#txeduchat
When I taught HS, behavior/academics were an expectation, but the intermittent/random rewards were nice for everyone. It's amazing what 9th graders would do for stickers and smarties :) #txeduchat
A5. I’m interested to hear what works with high schoolers. I think random rewards and narrating the classroom for doing good work is helpful. And Hot Cheetos and Takis. #txeduchat
A4. Small, small, small victories. This year, it has been about a S who chooses to come to class to late and sleeps a lot. But when I can get her to laugh about something, that is a win. #txeduchat
A5. So many amazing, INTRINSIC, positive, collaborative, goal setting, family connections, engagement, team building activities can take place using @classcraftgame - PLEASE check it out. Students LOVE it. #txeduchat
A5: #txeduchat i do us rewards but not all rewards requires a lot of effort. If they are doing a great job i will reward with something simple like laying on the floor or taking shoes off, or a note home. They love these.
I agree, but those are ind and not whole group.I also see those as mainly being done privately. When I have a struggling reader I don’t often broadcast it. When they’ve met goals we do celebrate, but often w/ a congrats they met the goal, not a prescribed reward #txeduchat
I agree, Kristi. There's actually 3 different reasons I've found in my research about why students may be difficult on a certain day. The first is motivation (value times confidence). second is lack of resources, and third is skills/knowledge. #txeduchat
A6: I've also used the "Love Languages" approach to motivating, rewarding generally finding ways to model appreciation for students individually. #txeduchat
Some classrooms have charts displayed to identify the status of kids’ behaviors, choices, and/or mistakes.
What if...
The school’s office, lounge, or workroom had charts displaying the behaviors, choices, mistakes of staff?
Would that add value to the culture?
#edchat
YES! They are between the child, the teacher, the family, and any other adult in the building who will be supporting, such as principal, counselor. Kids' behavior should NEVER be displayed for others to see. EVER. Preach! #txeduchat
I agree, but those are ind and not whole group.I also see those as mainly being done privately. When I have a struggling reader I don’t often broadcast it. When they’ve met goals we do celebrate, but often w/ a congrats they met the goal, not a prescribed reward #txeduchat
A5 I guess I give gifts - sugar free gum to help focus. Pencils or erasers once per week. Students see flex seating as reward. Provide tools not rewards #txeduchat#frenshare
Yes, and sometimes instead of bored out of their minds they are screaming for help because they don't feel like they belong to our classrooms academically or socially. What have you found works then? #txeduchat
A5. Rewards = students who glance up and ask, "what are you gonna give me?" while holding their hand out. Might want to rethink how this would play out for being future adults. #txeduchat
And it wouldn’t make you want to be on time more either! Imagine if someone supported you (taught you, scaffolded the needed skill) instead. I wish our primary Ts had gone through this paradigm shift. Imagine how different the world would be today. #ditchtheclips#txeduchat
A5: I have learned over the years that rewarding kids with adult time is the greatest investment! It builds relationships and kids always need many adults in their corner! Much better than a tangiible item. #txeduchat
A5. A classroom discussion or Morning Meeting with this graphic shared while students ask each other questions and the teacher facilitates their interactions! Yup! This would work!! #txeduchat
Each situation is different...some students blossom with independent study and others need more in-depth assistance. That is why developing relationships with Ss is SO essential. If we know their needs because they feel safe when telling us, we can provide solutions. #txeduchat
Yes, Evin. Choice is so powerful. I also found that relevancy to their lives also matters at the end of a school year. Do you have your students work in groups for projects at the end of a school year? #txeduchat
A7: Focus on learning each other! Let our kids know us, and share stories. Focus on building a classroom community and family. Morning meeting routines. Come up with collective commitments together. #txeduchat
A7: I think it's important to reserve some wall space for things that build culture in the classroom, but I see a lot of classrooms that are way too "busy" with only academic decorations. #txeduchat
A7: #txeduchat I will be clearing stating classroom expectations to students and the culture of our classroom. We are doing this TOGETHER! We are a TEAM. That's why i love having them bring pictures from home, because this is their space too.
A7: Practice what I preach. Ss reflect the adults in their lives. Seeing classes act differently for different teachers in a rotating schedule has affirmed this. #txeduchat
A7 - I treat my students like a “team” or “family” - we NEED each other - we SUPPORT each other - we don’t have to LIKE everyone, but we’ll fiercely protect each other without thought #txeduchat
So true. Sometime, I like to look at progress as a more positive measure. One can try, fail, but still move a step closer toward the goal...thoughts? #txeduchat
Yes, that is true. I find that rewarding students in groups is much easier logistically for a teacher and adds an element of friendly competition to your classroom. That brings energy and excitement to every lesson. #txeduchat
A7 Build the classroom culture by modeling what it should look like. Set expectations, rules, boundaries as you identify and praise Ss that are already modeling these things. It will catch on fast! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A7 Your first day should be #AWEsome That is your day to tell your story to the kids. Be the Tr that your Ss go home and tell their parents about. My Ss watch this video on the 1st day! #SuperHero status achieved. https://t.co/njrCSTtPJQ
Yes! As a lead learner, I sometimes have time with kids as a reward, and they can come to me to play Legos, draw, be a helper with me, etc. Positive principal referrals are day makers for me! #txeduchat
Yes, I find that extrinsic is the training wheel to intrinsic in more difficult student populations. This isn't true for all, but for many students. It's tricky. #txeduchat
A7. Could it be that right now is an excellent time to ask peers, who you greatly admire at your school, what they do during the 1st few weeks? Take notes, listen, ask questions. #txeduchat
A7 Learning names, learning interests. What do you wish your teacher knew? Putting up photos. Creating class creed then everyone signs and we post on wall. Create seesaw, invite parents #txeduchat#frenshare
@rodz8027 I love this on so many levels. 1. You use class vote to create a community of learners 2. It's a classwide system
My question is.. Is there every one or two students that hold the class back? What do you do? #txeduchat
A7: One of the most positive classroom cultures I had was #txeduchat when I started the year with teambuilding. Our first was The Marshmallow Challenge. We followed up with teambuilding Friday’s. Ss would ask me each week if we were having it! It helps create a sense of family!
Interesting that we have different views of what works when trying to engage learners and help them learn positive behaviors.
Wouldn't you agree? #txeduchat
Which one is your favorite?! I think I like #2 the most. Let professionals be professionals. Hire well, establish a safe environment for risk taking but with accountability and let teachers shine! What do you think?! #TXEduChat
Ways to positively impact #culture:
1). Greet people
2). Say please and thank you
3). Don’t micromanage
4). Share credit
5). Own failure
6). Be humble
7). Always be kind
8). Apologize
I find table groups of 4-6 works well with class wide behavior modification systems. This promotes collaboration, and makes your teaching life so much easier. #txeduchat
A7 My thirdies always loved “Wrong way, right way” where I’d show them the wrong way at something in a very overly exaggerated way and then show them the right way to do it or act- Sts love to see me do it as well as volunteer themselves #txeduchat
A8: #txeduchat sometime i just take a step back and re-eval. It's not them, it's me and i need to change something. I am also very honest with students and discuss with them the change and how i made a mistake. Keep it real! it's ok to mess up but own it.
I loved starting the year with team building. Gave up on teaching procedures, rules, etc., until after I had spent a couple of days getting to know my students. #txeduchat
A7.1 First week of school should always be about connecting with Ss, peers, and other campus stakeholders...Relationships are easier to navigate once connections have been established #txeduchat
A7: Begin the year getting to know my students; building relationships. “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.” #txeduchat
a8: I find that the ability to adapt is key. Just like we have an expectation of tech, but use the right tool for the right task, each of my students is different and I have to be willing to figure out what works for each above and beyond class rules. #txeduchat
A8 Just like we ask our Ss to reflect and be willing to change, Ts must do the same...and model that in full view of the Ss. Owning an issue and adjusting is what life is about. Teaching/modeling that is key! #txeduchat
I think it is because each of our situations are different. What works in my classroom may not work for yours, even if we're in the same school building. A great format for learning though. #txeduchat
A7: We will start off the year creating an an identity web from @SaraKAhmed Being the Change. I have used it a little bit at the end and we know much more about each other. This is mine. Some of my As wanted to write on it, so I let them. I used a different color #txeduchat
The H.E.R.O. sheets there on the left are our school's PBIS values. I tell the students to help remind each other of expectations. They have them memorized and the "little teachers" in the class take it upon themselves to point to a page. #txeduchat
A8: Being honest builds trust with Ss. Letting them know the problem & brainstorm solutions. Exposing fail forward moments as a T lets Ss see real lllife Growth & Grit. And Ss may have better insight as to why a system doesn't work. Their perspective is valuable. #txeduchat
#TxEduChat A1: I only see my students once a week (if I'm lucky), for a total of about 30 hrs / yr. My goal is to "stay the course" until the last class I have with them - on that last class, we do team-building games. The last few classes, extra changes-of-pace and flexibility.
A8- take an objective look at what is and isn’t working.I collect data just like I would for a struggling reader then look at what I as the teacher can modify. I teach 5 year olds. I NEED to find ways to meet their needs. It isn’t about me. #txeduchat
I'll also remind them at the beginning of the day of where the other class (morning/afternoon) stands. Their competitive nature comes out with that! #txeduchat
