A1: Using the PBIS framework builds a positive, caring community, as does implementing restorative practices-it all begins with relationships-when relationships are valued and facilitated, empathy increases 😊#rethink_learning
Our MTSS team uses a 2x10 mentoring strategy to help students make 1:1 connections with a supportive adult. These are a great starting point for empathetic relationships. #RLMSPride#rethink_learning
A1: to grow empathy we grow relationships through Restorative Practices, SEL, and are starting to implement PBIS. Really creating more empathetic teachers to teach students to be empathetic #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning
A1: Promising work that we're developing are embedded empathy / literacy / podcasting publications on our Radio Empathy page https://t.co/aF2D6kJe22
Also collaborating with @OutoftheBlocks1 has been a game changer for my students understanding of how to listen
A1 - Positive messages to entire school, many events that promote school culture, a genuine staff that cares. Personally, empathy is a mantra that shapes what I do each day. #rethink_learning
A1: Empathy is intentionally taught in our school. We put a name to it and recognize what it looks like, feels like... It is so much more than modeled, it is expected. #rethink_learning
A1 We have mentoring homerooms that meet and talk, do activities to help to build SEL skills, we also use PBIS and a few years back had the Olweus program that evolved more into PBIS and working in groups, building relationships with Ss and their peers #rethink_learning
So glad that you are here @Shapiro_WTHS because you can bring in the #positivity side - love what you wrote "empathy is a mantra that shapes what I do each day." #rethink_learning

One of my awesome science teachers has students periodically write letters about whatever they would like to share. This opens powerful paths to empathy in this case classroom #RLMSPride#rethink_learning@CHallScience116
A1: My #empathy hero is @micheleborba; her book #UnSelfie is tops and helped us weave empathy into our work at school. Here are her 9 suggestions to give our Ss the empathy advantage. #rethink_learning
Roxann, Learning Experience Designer, CT. #rethink_learning
Putting yourself in another's shoes- the feeling- that arises from this perspective, the understanding or cognitive aspect & what we do with this information shown by our action(s) affirming we feel, understand & act.
A1: also goes back to what counts most - building relationships, focusing on wellness and SEL as well as getting to know families...they come from all different backgrounds and experiences. #rethink_learning
A1 Also in my Spanish classes, in doing #PBL students are learning more about real world issues, and connecting globally, learning about the #teachsdgs and just adding to global awareness . #rethink_learning
A1: The reason I'm in Alaska is to learn more about the Kaleidoscope Connect Integrative Youth Development program and bring it back to the East Coast. One of its main foundations is empathy. #rethink_learning
Hi Liz and welcome to #rethink_learning. Gaining insights into their lives by asking the Ss to open up and share is a fantastic way to elevate empathy.
Noting the difference between empathy and sympathy is powerful in middle school. It allows students to look within and self-reflect. It spawns maturity. #rethink_learning
Q2: How do we help our young people listen to others deeply enough to engage with and be changed by what they learn? Share resources. #rethink_learning
Building relationships fo valuing each others thinking and reflecting on their biases that they bring to the collaboration and conversation. #rethink_learning

Q2 again --> How do we help our young people listen to others deeply enough to engage with and be changed by what they learn? Share resources. #rethink_learning
A2: Listening is another skill that must be taught and practice with intentional purpose. We cannot just tell our students to listen, they need direction, practice, and connections. #rethink_learning
A1: We don't have a school-wide system. For me the best way to grow empathy is to expose Ss to a range of diverse literature from people very different than themselves. #rethink_learning
A2 setting up authentic conversations with other students, I know . that we have to model the listening too, and be sure to lean in and listen to them #rethink_learning
A2 - List for Mark!
1. Model it
2. Have kids model it
3. Define it
4. Repetition of using it
5. Pay it forward daily lesson
6. Catch kids with empathy. #rethink_learning
A2: start by having them do simple activities where they have to listen to each other - I often have them sit back to back - Student #1 gives instructions to Student #2 and they really have to listen and communicate effectively - that's a start. #rethink_learning
A2: Here is a post I wrote on 10 Tips for Active Listening https://t.co/aiMZLoEvlF Are you really listening? When you really listen, you may learn something new about that person. #empathy#rethink_learning
A2: We must model attentive active listening and listen with the intent to understand, acknowledge what others are feeling and be #present and #mindful of the impact of our words and actions #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning
A2: Get kids in touch w active listening & the art of the follow up question. Get your hands on the OOTB card deck. Some too heavy for kids but others perfect for teacher share. Thinking like a historian another great tool 4 understanding "everybody ha a story"
Q2: I believe that young people want to share their stories and want to hear the stories of others. It's a natural part of identity formation. All we educators need to do is give them the chance to do so. #rethink_learning
A2: We use the SOLER active listening skills model to help our students listen to understand before listening to respond.
Practice this with a mindful listening activity.

A1. One of our School Improvement Goals is Culture and Climate. Building classroom and school culture and climate. Promote the idea of a family. We have started The Positivity Project @PosProject and it has been very.....positive. #otherpeopelmatter#rethink_learning
Q2 again --> How do we help our young people listen to others deeply enough to engage with and be changed by what they learn? Share resources. #rethink_learning
A2: We must go first and show them the way. Then create a culture conducive to risk taking and empathy. Then get out of their way and let them do it! #rethink_learning
A2: Ts need to model active listening when we interact with Ss and one another, but active listening is also a skill that can be taught in the classroom. Give Ss opportunities to share personal stories/experiences; this entices them to want to listen. #rethink_learning
A2 Sean here from NC making a #chatcameo in #rethink_learning. Following along and enjoying the sharing. I believe we start with a clear, shared vision that places a culture of positivity at the center of all things in service and support of all kids and educators.
Q3. How do we help our students connect and build positive relationships with diverse populations to promote a healthy, inclusive social climate? #rethink_learning
A2. ProActive Circles are a good way to build culture and climate. They are needed along with restorative circles as a part of restorative practices. You can use Pro-Active circles for anything though. Curriculum, Culture and Climate, fun topics....etc. #rethink_learning
A3: Build a positive classroom community of learners who know each other because time was taken to learn about each others’ backgrounds & different cultures, nurture every relationship! #rethink_learning
Yes! I did community circles Monday morning (check in after w/e) and Friday afternoon (b4 left for the w/e) -worked so well for all my Ss! #rethink_learning
Q3 again ---> How do we help our students connect and build positive relationships with diverse populations to promote a healthy, inclusive social climate? #rethink_learning
A3: As long as all students are included and involved, I have found that students are able to connect with all populations. We need to model inclusion and positive attitudes. #rethink_learning
Q3. How do we help our students connect and build positive relationships with diverse populations to promote a healthy, inclusive social climate? #rethink_learning
Engage students in watching & creating empathy experiences. Demonstrate & share experiences in song, & story writing and telling. Using a new tech learning tool 360-VR students can authentically engage in empathy-based experiences. #rethink_learning
A3: I chose to work in a very diverse district. Our students embrace differences and celebrate each other as opportunities to learn and grow from who they are. The embrace is always positive! #rethink_learning
A3 work on building the relationships and culture in our classroom, spend time interacting with all Ss, and include activities for Ss to learn about different groups, globally, PBL can help too #rethink_learning
A3: I think once we start stepping into one another's shoes, to really understand where they're coming from as well as where they're going, we'll start to include more rather than exclude.
https://t.co/AvCnPuOM09#rethink_learning
A3 - never assume kids know empathy. Connect kids to diverse populations so they see and reflect what others do. Break into small groups and board write about what each group mentioned. Call home with empathy message. #rethink_learning
We DO NOT shy away from subjects such as race, religion, or sexual orientation. Instead, we celebrate our diversity in students and staff! It is who we are- our culture. Our building breathes this. #rethink_learning
A3: by taking the lead and doing it ourselves, sharing our experiences, and then creating structures (physical, social, and emotional) that will allow them to do the same. #rethink_learning
Q3. How do we help our students connect and build positive relationships with diverse populations to promote a healthy, inclusive social climate? #rethink_learning
Q3 all schools are blessed with a diverse population because students come from all walks of life. We need to create lessons, units, events for students to showcase their diversity and find their common ground in safe space.
#rethink_learning
We used to end our week by pushing all of our desks out of the way, and connecting/sharing/problem solving/apologizing/rebuilding relationships as part of a class meeting. So powerful! #rethink_learning
A3: need to understand others; integrate issues related to #equity, #inclusion, #diversity, & #socialjustice in the classroom; have Ss work cross-grade and cross-class and even cross-schools; have Ss lead learning. #rethink_learning
Love this ---> connecting/sharing/problem solving/apologizing/rebuilding relationships as part of a class meeting. So powerful! #rethink_learning Thanks @RACzyz

A3. Celebrate diversity within our building and classrooms. Recognize what makes us unique so we develop inclusive Ss and people that grow up to be accepting of others for their differences rather than being critical, judgmental and stereotypical. #rethink_learning
A3: it all starts with building a positive climate and culture in the classroom - get to know your Ss, their families and learn about the different populations and the diversity inherent in our society. #rethink_learning
A3: Literature is amazing for this. When we expose Ss to diverse literature they can have those "imaginative rehearsals" as @KellyGToGo so wonderfully describes them. Very helpful for my Ss population which is very homogeneous. #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning A3:
Micro: Practice listening to one another in school
Local: Get into the community to listen to the stories of others
Global: Connect w books & people who have stories of hope&perseverance. Read A Long Walk to Water as a mentor text
@WaterforSoSudan@TeachSDGs
By "diverse populations" I hope we're thinking substantially rather than superficially. Students who THINK differently and are allowed to express and explore those differences are vital to developing a healthy, inclusive social climate. #rethink_learning
A3 Use available technology to connect students with shared goals and projects to other schools and organizations in different parts of the state, country and world. #rethink_learning
Can it be that our 30 minutes have already come and gone?
Thank you #rethink_learning friends and family for your insights and resources.
Mostly, thank you for your investment into the #SEL needs of our future.
A3. Have a classroom library & activities that celebrate other cultures. Your Ss need to hear and see about cultures like and unlike theirs. As people, WE ARE ONE. Unfortunately as we get older people build barriers. We don’t come into the world with them. #rethink_learning
Thank you to all the awesome educators who were so caring today Special thanks for our guest host, @BarbaraGruener - Hope you join us on Monday 11//26 with our next topic, Timeless Learning, with guest hosts @pammoran and @irasocol#rethink_learning
A3: We need to have candid discussions about topics relevant to our world in class. We need to show respect to all Ss and expect all Ss to do the same. #rethink_learning
A resource to also add to your list is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education-Making Caring Common provides amazing community based empathy strategies and resources.
