What the what?!? Stella is hosting #pln365?!? Yeah buddy! Michael A. Good dude and #STEM Facilitator for @SmartLab_tweets in Chicago. Also, I do some stuff with #122edchat on Wednesdays.
Hi #pln365. Glad ro be stopping in. I'm Adam a US history teacher in SC. Doesn't usually get too cold down here but when it does something in a crockpot is fabulous! Stew, sausage, cabbage rolls, chicken and dumplings... Mmmmmm....
A1: Assessment looks very different from when I was in school. Assessments are projects with iteration and not just end points. Tests are always able to be retaken. Growth is valued over grades.
#pln365
A1: #pln365 I used to be able to do whatever I deemed developmentally appropriate through ESGI where I could pick and choose my own assessments or make my own. Now we are required to do IGDIs...
Oh what a great topic. Just had my first #ECS410 Assessment class tonight and THIS was part of our discussion - Assessment As, For & Of Learning for continuous growth and learning. #pln365
A1. MAN! I have only been teaching for four years but can I tell you, assessment has CHANGED BIG TIME! I used to test exactly like I was as a student. Tons of MC and an ERQ. Now, I know the difference and I do a lot of project based testing. #pln365
A1: an assessment looks fun in my classroom. I take students' understanding in many different ways - Just like personalized learning...there should be personalized assessment #pln365
A1: Assessments are widely varied in my classroom. We use Google forms a lot, quizizz, @classcraftgame quests, and more. We also do starter questions, so there are many types of questions that my Ss encounter! #pln365
A1 what a big opening Q! I'm moving to RPG style combats (formative quiz-like) for my daily checkins. Students get an enemy and get as right they roll a die. They can earn points/items to level up their powers. Boss fight is a review befoes the required MC test #pln365
A1. My "real" assessments are student performances. Short and to the point. It doesnt take a huge thing to see if the kids "get it". MUST PROVIDE FEEDBACK! #PLN365
A1: Do a formative check almost every day using @Quizizz. Assessment is an ongoing process. Allows me to give feedback so the students can make their best better. Want to do a better job of making concept checks not on paper. Want more authentic assessments. #pln365
A1 I try to chunk my content into segments and preassess, process check and quiz. I construct the unit assessments to be more about application that rote facts #pln365
A1: Assessment doesn’t look like a traditional test in my college English class, it is a writing, presentation, discussion or project with multiple steps for completion. A work in progress always #pln365
A1: Assessment in my classroom is some paper testing, but more often it's about the discussion, the presentation, the final product rather than MC questions. Still developing! #pln365
A1 - Assessment is continuous, built into the learning activities. As teachers we are constantly ‘assessing’ - body language, facial expressions, side-bar conversations during learning activities - it’s part of the landscape. #pln365

A1 Lots of things, sometimes an observation, conversation, a game, written responses, or using digital tools that help to assess quickly and have data, give feedback, such as @quizizz@nearpod@goformative#pln365

This is my goal. I allow for many form of alternative assessment, make a video, audio, game, oral quiz, ect. However its secondary. Its hardly every the first assessment and students do it by choice. #pln365
A1: assessment comes in many different forms in my class, but I always think that analyzing writing gives such a great glimpse into what Ss are learning #pln365
A1: An assessment can look, sound or feel a variety of ways. Essentially, it is an opportunity for students to demonstrate proficiency in a way that they feel most comfortable. Long gone are multiple choice and true false assessments. #pln365
a1: assessment comes in all forms - quizizz, quizlet, questions in discussion, entrance and exit tickets. purpose of assessment is to give me info to lead instruction #pln365
A1: An assessment in my class can be anything formative or summarize. Essays, quizzes, posters, tests, vocabulary skits, oral presentations, etc. Depends on standard that I assess #pln365
Hey Stell! I agree wholeheartedly because if assessment is used as it should be, you're trying to find out the scope and depth of Ss knowledge and mastery. #pln365
A2: Nearly none of the assessments I have ever given are tests. In many cases there are simply better options that allow for more student creativity and preferred learning style.
#pln365
A2: Absolutely agree! We use tests because they are traditional and sometimes easier to grade, but an assessment can be an opportunity a student has to prove learning. #pln365
A2: Agree. When I assess, I am essentially "checking the pulse" of the learners in my midst. Not everything needs to be for a grade. How can I help you get better, be more comfortable? #pln365
A2: Totally agree! Some students are great at taking tests and playing “normal” school. Each student needs to be able to assess in a way that feels comfortable for them. #pln365
A1 - Specific assessments take different forms - today I did group thinkabouts, wall walks, a short quiz, a think-pair-share, a variety of questioning and an exit slip. #pln365
"I quiz because I care" is something I have to remind myself when I feel like I am beating a dead horse with the kids. Allows the students to practice recall every day. #pln365#retrievalpractice
A1) An assessment gives me an eye 👁 into the mind of my students so that together we can map 🗺 out the destination of our journey for learning. #pln365
A2: Absolutely agree and probably provides more information if it's not. An observation, a conversation, listening to reading or an explanation of problem solving can tell you a whole lot and with a lot less time & stress on all #pln365
A2: I agree! assessment does NOT have to be a test!
Just today, co-teachers I worked with were doing a literacy debate and we were able to see understanding or lack of.
#pln365
A2. An assessment can be a brief conversation or an observation. I dare say many of our assessments look like the assessments we took as students. Not good especially if you are old like me. #pln365
A2: an assessment is ongoing and fluid...the word test has such a negative connotations or most students. That’s why you prepare them daily to eventually become successful on a “test” —that’s the key! #pln365
A2: Definitely! Assessing is truly about starting w/ a goal, taking steps to reach it, & checking progress frequently, asking for help along the way as needed. Bonus: doing this also = individualized learning. #pln365
A2: #pln365 Agreed!! You can learn a great deal about a child just through informal observation, especially at my grade level (PreK) This, from the infamous @gerrybrooksprinhttps://t.co/oaCODKsxhT

A2: I absolutely agree-assessments do not have to be tests. Though tests certainly have their place, I enjoy trying creative assessments. We are always assessing, whether students are completing a test, discussing, or even playing a game! #pln365
Been thinking of using Flipgrid more as an assessment tool and number talks. Right now use it mostly for a lesson where students make their own questions and then share it via flipgrid and end of unit reflections. #pln365

@Stella_Pollard, @BMSBraves1, @TheStephenKeys
A2 - Most definitely it does NOT need to be a test. I rarely give any tests - use an inquiry/PBL framework although sometimes spend time with content - helping Ss see the need for what they are going to be doing. #pln365
Tests do NOT allow for students to be critical thinkers. #pbl does. Do we want a world where the workforce is great at taking tests but cannot think? #ithinknot#pln365
A2 Most definitely!! I learn much more from conversations and listening to Ss explain than from paper and pencil tests. One of the many reasons I use @Seesaw and @Flipgrid#pln365
I've been playing with some dice games,to help students engage more with the quizzes. They are data for me but only if the students care. #pln365https://t.co/VcdS5YYS2W
A3 - Quality assessment allows Ss to demonstrate/show their knowledge & understanding, how they will solve the problem, why they chose that route and includes a connection to their own life/learning even in a small way. #pln365
A3: An assessment that not only proves content knowledge, but also Ss ability to integrate and synthesize information, and to address an essential question in either writing or orally...oh and to extrapolate what they have learned into other fields! #pln365
A2) Can I expand beyond the realm of the classroom and say the answer is no. Assessments are used to critique the application of applied knowledge however in the world 🌍 we are in that is not always regulated to pencil ✏️ and paper 📝 #pln365
A3 The assessment should mirror the depth of instruction. If you taught a topic for 2 weeks it should be assessed at a deeper level than something you covered in 1 or 2 days. #pln365
A3: If students are able to vocalize their learning and understanding of a concept, then it's a win. There are so many vehicles to demonstrate that they "get it". Not everything needs to be a PowerPoint or an essay. #pln365
A2: Of Course. In @alicekeeler we shall trust. I think favorite Quote from her is "Who ever does the talking does the learning". I think we need more of a spiraling curriculum. Students just learn to hack school. #pln365
A3 - Learning portfolios are a great way for students to gather evidence of their learning, everything from writing, drawing, motion to video/audio as well as more traditional forms of writing/tests. It’s about building a foundation for continuous learning. #pln365
Quality assessment is anything that shows student growth towards a goal while proving knowledge. Quality assessment is not high standardized test scores.#pln365
It's more than checking off the box and showing what you know. I want to see explanation and understanding. Not just "how" and "what" but "why" #pln365
Join us tonight at 8 CST for the 1st #worldgeochat of 2018. We will be discussing increasing student engagement. Preview the questions here: https://t.co/gJY7wurP9c
A4: One is for us as teachers to measure learning and the need for reteaching. The other is for the Ss to know how to prove that they have learned something -- whether that means knowing how to take a test, express themselves orally, or whatever. #pln365
A3: In my class students who don't miss anything the first time they take a quiz only get a 9/10. Have to get another perfect score or mastery challenge in order to show mastery. Also Mastery has to have a time component. Can only master a concept after the unit is over. #pln365
A3. Regurgitating information does not prove anything. Put the knowledge to use. Stop memorizing dates and stuff (except for my birthday- 2/13) #pln365
A4: Assessment for learning is something that drives learning and exploration whereas assessment as learning can be either an end point (traditional) or an iterative process.
#pln365
A4: Assessment for learning is all about that progress check: what was my goal, what have I done to achieve it, what am I doing well & where do I fall short, who can I enlist for help, readjust, etc. More than bubbling in a letter, or it means nothing. #pln365
A3: Quality assessment is the one that brings OUT the BEST in students. Quality assessments highlights assets!
"a +2 is better than -98" "-98 sucks the life out of you" ~ Rita Pierson #PLN365
A4: The assessment is part of the learning for both T and S. S learn how much they know and Ts learn what Ss do and do not know. Helps all move forward on the path toward improvement. #pln365

A3 Feedback can take so many forms, too. Verbal and oral. Giving students feedback demonstrates our willingness to connect with them - on a very human level. #pln365
A4 - AS - Ss are actively involved in monitoring & assessing their learning - FOR - Teacher is involved with Ss, descriptive feedback is essential in a process of continuous learning. #pln365
TBF, a lot of students will choose the MC test because they don't want to be bothered with writing or coming in outside of class to chat with the teacher...or b/c they feel like they can game the system with a MC test. #pln365

A4 Assessment FOR learning is focused on immeidate feedback and forward momentum. Love @Socrative for this.
Assessment OF learning is more for the teacher to see where they are in the mastery. #pln365

A4 summative/formative. Its all about the feedback loops and possibility of learning from the assessment. I am a game inspired teacher. (Sorry for all the blog plugs) I saw this with my 4 year old last week playing Snail Bob #pln365https://t.co/T4qqD53Ei1
A4: Assessment for learning is an ongoing process, giving during instruction to help refine and improve. Assessment of learning is your performance check. #pln365
"Show me what you know bingo" Try this out last year. Want to bring it back but needs some work. Love the concept of the empowering the students. #pln365https://t.co/wmqIGe1Ata
Going to bring this out today "Show me what you know Bingo" unit assessment idea. Students will need help with some of the tech but hoping the power of choice will inspire them. Thank you @karlymoura for idea #iteachmath#MTBoS#teach180
A4: #pln365@SolutionTree Only the greatest PD!! Assessment FOR Learning drives S learning (what does the T need to cover better for S understanding) Assessment AS learning only shows if S "got it."
They are looking at what WE as educators are looking for...mastery!
We need to empower them when embracing what they CAN do and provide the support to get where they need to get! #pln365
Many of us are moving away from the lecture - test - repeat cycle. But a good lecture has its place. I listen to David Blight's Yale Civil War class on YouTube for fun. Eric Foner, Joanna Freeman have great stuff too #pln365
That’s the end of the chat for tonight but not the end of the conversation! Keep the conversation flowing! It has been a great honor to host #PLN365 tonight! You all rock!
Thanks @Stella_Pollard and all for a great #pln365 chat! I’m off, prepping for Pedagogy: Theory & Practice - tomorrow we discuss 21st C pedagogy & developing as an emerging teacher! have an edu-awesome night and if you have time join us Thursday 8pm CST for #saskedchat
I also think test are overrated. the most important skills we want our students to display like character, grit, resiliency, can't be assessed on a test. They are assess in LIFE. #pln365
A4. Assessment for learning is showing what knowledge has been learned and whether info. needs to be reinstructed. Assessment as learning is Ss expressing learning in verbally, writing, etc. as to taking the test. #pln365
A1: I try to assess for every learning/testing style. If a S bombs a multiple choice assessment about circuits, but can build and explain circuits using wires, batteries, and bulbs, I consider that mastery. #pln365
A2: AGREE. A "test" is one way to assess, but I can usually tell more by listening to student conversations than by the letter they choose on a test. #pln365
A3) When I was in college, I remember asking my professor what we needed to study for the mid-term. He said, "everything." I knew I never wanted to be a teacher like that. #pln365
How do we create a uniform assessment or are we saying that we do not need a uniform assessment. There are pros and cons to this as well especially in regard to the achievement gap. #pln365
