thanks! Happy to be part of another awesome chat and PLN
Hi Viv, thanks for dropping in!
'connected' is becoming a hard word to define in the 21st century. connected tech wise and connected socially wise
Hi, Michael in Auckland, nice and warm and clean after a shower :)
has a bigger picture of the world than just themselves through experiences with many people https://t.co/E72hiv5AUb
Lucky you! I'm in Christchurch freezing!
Is....connect to self, others, community, country, globe
A1 kids connecting is about building relationships and learning with others
Hi Anna, thanks for being on deck!
Google classroom / email / social media is changing the way we 'connect' with Ss. More 24/7 and unable to switch off
Thanks for the support! A1
a bit like being a creative connector when you are connecting to something you are reading connect to self world other text
A1: Connected students are those whose learning communities go beyond the c/r walls and home
A1 I think students come pre-connected now
Hi David and welcome! A1 Why so?
A1 Has a bigger picture of the world than just themselves through experiences with many people and knows how to learn from it
A1 Connectedness - relationship building on small to large scale
A1 Connected Ss are ones that share and listen to other Ss, in their class, their school, globally, etc
Perhaps we should call it "interconnected"
make connections with all learning to make sense of their learning?
definitely a key to the whole thing - it's all about perspective
A1 A connected S is one who builds relationships within and beyond the c'room particularly for learning
preconnected? Possibly in some ways but not in others
because they're so immersed in social and digital media - they're digital natives
Woops. A bit late. Got sidetracked. Looking forward to learning alongside you all.
a1 ss who have understanding of learning and context outside their own classroom and experience.
A1: A connected student is an aware student.
Hi Bridget, can't wait to visit your coolschool tomorrow!
A1- Ss beginning to understand the power of digital media and can interact with it
Happy to connect. Mistimed the last few s 😊
No worries, quality not quantity!
We're looking forward to meeting you!!
A student who has the ability to access material & people at any time which will help improve their progress
Like us connecting to make sense of what we do in our c/r and our practices.
Hi A1. A student who feels like they belong
Nice Danille, so many students are NOT aware IMO about connections! A1
A1: One who can communicate beyond the four walls of a classroom, whether locally, state or international, using many means.
is it that contentious? maybe I misunderstand the concept...I will listen...
Hi Lisa, this is key isn't it?
A1: a student who is able to relate. To their learning, to others, to their context, and to tech.
Speak, speak!!! All opinions welcome and encouraged.
I agree with you, they are way more connected than I ever was 20 years ago (ok, 25)
Love this. Flip side is they are happy to give back and help others w their learning
Yes- can access and use the 'classroom without walls' with purpose
A1 Let's not forget students need to connect INSIDE the classroom too. Collab'n with peers in immediate sphere is essential
ah...good point...but it's amazing how fluent even the little ones are... they figure thingsout
got to be real connection we move forward when we feel it inside so do sts - where passion in learning is ignited
Love the idea of their vision! A1
A2: Connections build relationships. Relationships = a more productive and effective classroom environment.
They actively participate in a PLN, with mentors and like minded individuals both locally and globally
A2: students need to feel like it matters and it's worth it. Without it, learning is superficial
Hey tweeps. Sorry but late to the game! Trent from Melb here (Teacher & MS T&L Ambassador)
A2 Student connections provide meaning and purpose
Q2 when there is connectEDness the big bang of learning is ignited!
I think so but when some get to HS, somehow the connection seems to get lost!
1/ there was an experiment where a laptop was left with a group of non English speaking kids who hadn't used computers
It helps students see that we're all in it together
A2 We cannot survive on our own, we need each other, the sooner we make connections, the better we are
are they more connected with other humans?
agreed! Ss are very good at picking up the vibes. We are teaching by example.
A1: one that knows how to use their resources to connect them to what they require, requires independent learning
That's a great point. Where teachers lead, students follow!
A2- Practice building and maintaining relationships is always invaluable. Asking for and accepting help are impt skills
Lisa here - a bit late and just watching the stream on and off
2/ when the guy came back after, say, a month, the kids were doing all kinds of things with the computer
Yes! Maybe not in the ways we are used to, but they do
People seek connection. We learn from each other like we do here. Ss aren't any different
I think some do but not all so we get to show them how! Exciting times in edu!
A1: Connectedness provides Ss to feel as though they belong to community, positive contributors with a sense of purpose
Connections are one thing... authentic connections are another
Sugata Mitra! That was awesome!
A2 Connections with peers and pros provides new learning, feedback, inspiration, the list goes on.
A2: To start practising networking for learning which is a skill relevant now and in future
It allows them to seek help and advice when they need it which is often not in school
Nice Fiona, when we learn through others we learn more about ourselves. IMO A2
Whoops. https://t.co/t1YYWPjGSD
a2 no one can b a silo anymore The world is connected. Ss need the skills to connect information and relationships
I am so grateful for the learning and connectEDness i have found on our professional Twitter platform
Nice response, extends the learning spaces and options for students!
A2 Everything is connected. The more connected Ss Ps and schools are the better Ss do
A2: Teachers connecting to students is essential for giving them confidence to take risks in their learning
Love the first sentence!!!!! And the 2nd's pretty good too!
A2: To take them beyond the isolation of their own area - to grow as learners, to appreciate and understand others.
A2: 'None of us is smarter than all of us' read it somewhere about connected educators
I love the idea of a virtual classroom
Nice Jess and welcome. Keywords- confidence and risk!
A2 Ss need to realise they are part of the larger world and they carry a responsibility to be active citizens in it.
In think students already understand the power of the internet, but need guidance to use it in ways that benefit them.
Definitely there's more 2 distract frm human interaction bt also more opportunities
Wow! Awesome point and well made! And welcome!
Wow! Awesome point and well made! And welcome!
A2- Connection is 1st step 2 seeking meaning. Learning is about seeking meaning & understanding
Never underestimate a child 😀
A lot depends on fit-for-purpose IMO.
Absolutely. GAFE in general - hangouts etc.
It's all about helping students grow and be independent enough to make significant progress
Classroom without walls for Ts and Ss
yes! so learning must be real and connect to real life problem solving
Nice distinction and well made. Welcome by the way!
A3 Ss can connect by sharing and being open to others, by reaching out, taking opportunities, 4 some this might be difficult
classroom / connections / internet / social media / virtual classroom / relationships. endless connections
That's on my list of things to sort out next year
Great to have you on board! Appreciate the effort!
'Authentic' is a key word
1/ on the subject of human connection, a lot of young people are opting for snapchat and messaging services
A3: Through technology modern and not so modern
Through social networks, video conferencing, but also on platforms like https://t.co/mb69e1mp2O or Github, Global Voices etc
This is a challenge for many of our students. Independence!
Through social networks, video conferencing, but also on platforms like https://t.co/TrjM0ZwfDp or Github, Global Voices etc
build trust relationship with sts first so that they can take risks into real learning
2/ where they can interact more with their select group of friends and it's not so public and impersonal - more private
We encourage our Ss to connect w an external mentor for their passion projects (besides staff mentor) 1/2
It is so rewarding! It's so positive to create communities that encourage growth
A3: Even without tech connection, S can meet experts locally, have mentors, work up from there to tech connections - endless.
It depends on their individual interests. There is a global network for everything these days.
Very cool. My colleague and I are in Christchurch, freezing but having awesome learning.
I forgot how challenging it is for a 12yo to make a phone call. Not a frequently practiced skill these days
Does that mean they ask Qs of this mentor, or get deeper guidance?
A3 by teachers making connections visible, creating learning opportunities to collaborate, connect learning beyond the class
So true, this is where students need to be capable of making judicious choices.
A3: VoiceThread, Google Docs, videos...
A3: the first step to being connected is observation. Look at how things fit then adapt or embrace reminder- not all fits
I don't call it virtual because it's pretty solid and real- just different
That's so cool, told you you're becoming !
A3 teachers valuing and showing students the value of connections. Show them How / Why / When
A4 Thru online and offline social/learning networks. Up to us to help provide Ss with purposeful ways to connect
Nice Amanda and welcome! Need to consider then act! A3
Nice Amanda and welcome! Need to consider then act! A3
If teachers aren't familiar with various networks, then sets will suffer. Teachers need to be "connected" first.
either or or both! Some meet w them frequently. Some support via phone/email. Whatever mentor can offer
Oh, dear... we might end up in the observer effect rabbit hole- or will we?
Hahaha. It's difficult for me and I'm slightly (ok, a lot) older. But that might be neuroatypicalness...
A3: Most young people are used to being connected via social media, challenge for Ts is to help them connect for learning
When teachers jump in, students love to be involved. A3
That's the difference between education and indoctrination- one leads to self-determination
Hi Lisa. Students need to be able to adjust. A3
Connectedness should be a seamless part of planned learning not an add on
Yes and one leads to freedom!
That's awesome! I'm just trying to get mine 2 email an expert for their passion project. Still a bit slow on that
digital literacy is important too not just the connections
A3: Talking to one another. Finding out about one another. Sharing interests and hopes for the future.
Yes, directing that connection for the correct purpose and context.
I think we're channelling Freire...
A3 Get a PRO to teach things (tchr is not the fount of knowledge). Get parents in, get council members in, skype an expert
Great! Can take a bit of research to find someone but ppl always willing to help
Nothing beats the real-world connections. A3
And they are often the 'experts' in this field. They love showing me how to do things digitally.
A3: to school it has to be through pride, cocurricular activities, and connecting to the school values
I've not looked into it yet but there's alot out there about how to use snapchat in the classroom
I think my perspective on this is influenced by working in adult education.
I think this is why I am struggling with using Snapchat for education - yet to be convinced of its purpose in an edu context.
Nice, love the future reference! A3
Wow! Very rewarding and connectedness in the true sense of the word! Congrats!
Gr8 thing about connecting https://t.co/XoR8f9afRA
Great! Can take a bit of research to find someone but ppl always willing to help
a Ss 2 yrs ago wrote bk abt NZ music & Anika Moa met w her! +lead singer fr Salmonella Dub. Ppl love to help
A3: Ss to the classroom lots of positive reinforcement, humility and empathy and most of all a sense of humour
I would argue that all connections between people are 'real world'
A3 once we have modelled connectedness, sts start to do it themselves. They know who they need to work with, how to reach them
Connected Ts do seem to value Ss connections more. Maybe a case of 'walking in their shoes'
Our year doesn't start until September
Definitely, am working on it, this chat might be the kick in the behind that gets me going on it ;)
it's the portal to the big wide world! are BIG skypers!
Nice point but IMO if work is for assessment then less "real"!
I use wechat "groups" with sts and parents chatting together, works really well
A4 helping out with digital literacy
How cool, now these are powerful connections for students.
A4 Ts can provide opportunities for Ss to connect, model how to look, interact, and then encourage Ss to seek their own tribe
Y E S I K N O W just have 2 do it! thanks 4 the connections! will follow!
A key for all students now and going forward! A4
sometimes Ts and other Ss are just audience but not always the desired/authentic audience for creations!
A3 I think good idea for Ts andSs to use multiple tools/ platforms at once e.g. blog post and share to twitter, FB, pinterest
A4 Digital Citizenship is a priority, taking risks, and modelling different ways to connect.
A4: Mentoring and guiding (and monitoring) students in connecting positively with others.
I agree, all parties need to be engaged!
A4 providing opportunities for ss to connect. Demonstrate possibilities. model being a connected learner themselves
A4: Lead by example, create opport. for connection, maintain connection when possible, connect colleagues with others
A4: Encouraging them to use technology which may be unfamiliar to them. "This phone has a cord...huh? How's it work?!"
A4 facilitation of organised chaos
Nice, key is continuity and regularity isn't?
Ss need to see the value of their connections in a larger context - not just for school
A4: Ts can show Ss HOW they too learn from their online colleagues. Online learning has many forms; best seen, than described
A4. Encouraging them to give it a go
A3:To the world skype classroom, online word docs & showing Ss how social media has a purpose other than liking your friends
A4 Beside providing genuine opportunities, developing their skills to help navigate the world of online connecting
Yes! Definitely! And learn about the purpose of each!
They need to see immediate and legitimate links IMO.
A4 if sts see you are learning and Wowing over new discoveries, connection happens they see us as life long learner
A3- We are just expanding the horizons and means of connectedness. Tools are different but purpose the same
I use wechat for homework, feedback, advice, links etc all the while parents have oversight.Transparent, private, recorded.
yes - digital and information literacy - CRUCIAL https://t.co/Y14GubaAcf
digital literacy is important too not just the connections
A4 as in all learning, planning the creating conditions so students identify need to connect themselves to enhance learning
Love the navigating reference!
It's such a game changer!
If they don't see why they are doing it when they are doing it, it won't stick
legitimate = making a difference/serving a purpose.
A4 Excellent point and well made!
A4 Excellent point and well made!
Thanks! (I think you just did the reverse of what I did last week!) :)
I would say we're still finding our way, true.
A4: Helping them to keep going. "I've emailed them" doesn't always mean the other person gets the message. Have you asked?
Ha ha!!!!! Such a habit! Must use tweetdeck! ;)
I'd agree but I think HSs are trying more and more.
A4:provide authentic opportunities for it to happen in and a great opportunity to teach Ss how to be a digital citizen
This is where F2F is still very powerful form of connection.
Kia ora -A4 Ts role, opportunity maker-facilitator of relationships-conversation 'de-staller' via strategically placed Qs etc
Tweet deck plus iPhone sometimes + laptop now is that connected? https://t.co/q9RDSvJdwU
Ha ha!!!!! Such a habit! Must use tweetdeck! ;)
I was remembering how some used to leave messages on bathroom walls- now its Snapchat
The more opportunities we give, the more times students can learn and in different ways!
The more opportunities we give, the more times students can learn and in different ways!
navigation in a digital world requires a different type of literacy. Once we get the gist of it, the rest is easy!
Still connections only the mode has changed!
A4- help w research where the connections are. Schls doing an audit of skills of their parents/ grandparents etc is grt idea
This will be a 'wicked evolution'. New type of literacy for sure
Hi Georgina and welcome. Great post. In my school, we're realised this!
Often very hard for some students to break away from the family unit IMO. A4.
A4 should be guiding the students to make amazing connections
Classic, I use twitter more than email now, the phone even less!
I'm so silly-on ph mostly as if I know I don't have time to commit to full chat so use least convenient device!
A4: Ts role... I think it's also about keeping them safe!
A5 Ideally Ss should have complete agency over connections, but practically we need to scaffold them to that point
A5 once connected it's like electricity that powers the needs for light - let the learning begin and flow allow Qs to fire
I agree, they need to become agentic asap.
Hi there , better late than never right???
True. But there may be ppl in schl community willing to mentor in their field?
It's more known as a net or twitter device!
Fashionably late good Sir, welcome!
Fashionably late good Sir, welcome!
A5 once connected it's like electricity that powers the need for light - let the learning begin and flow allow Qs to fire
I would agree. Total agency with the support that ind. Ss need.
A5- Agency goes hand in hand with critical thinking or it's not real agency
and then I stay anyway! ;)
but w/ dangers of Internet, we need to help them along, or others will coddle them so much they'll never learn
All the agency in the world. Learn by failure, it's the quickest route.
That's key! Find a mentor anywhere anyone just find them!
ironically my ph is the most convenient for me - I make it effective out of sheer slackness
A5 We need to be teaching them skills and habits that allow them to have full agency, safely. Kids are connected already.
I'm not sure what mine had, I definitely can fit more than it did on my wrist these days (maybe)
is now trending in Australia, ranking 20
A5 S agency should increase with their level of experience but should be monitored just in case
Steph, you are anything but slack!!!
Should be called accessory devices https://t.co/p0gzODsGlB
ironically my ph is the most convenient for me - I make it effective out of sheer slackness
don't understand Q5...will listen
Thanks! Barely ring anyone anymore!
A5: They should have a fair amount, but it is also our job to ensure that they are safe and digital citizenship aware.
A5: IMO That's where digital citizenship and cyber safety are important to be in place, so ss can be more autonomous
Yes, it's about lng to be critical about how and why. Learn about possibilities, responsibility and consequences
A5 Thoughts on safe search engines e.g. https://t.co/Fo8yPW1Xfl that take away some authenticity but provide some safety?
A5: Much agency and influence. But with that comes great responsibility. Need direction and support to start with!
A5 real Q for me is what form the agency takes - it's context, how it's enacted and its authenticity
With Ps it seems to be one extreme or the other need to help them find the middle ground
LOL! Love this. I do more F2F connections than ringing.
I totally agree. Need to be educated choices!
I'm a master at finding solutions to allow me to juggle as much as my brain will hold lol
The world is neither black or white, it's all grey (gray?) We all need to realize this...
Nice, love the exploration idea!
A5 should be trying to promote and develop learner agency in all areas. Thinking teachers main agents in learning is deluded
That's why you're super-awesome and part of the whanau!
That's why you're super-awesome and part of the whanau!
I agree and in the grey is the learning and belief!
who wants to spend time talking when a text will suffice?
I find them helpful B/c the results are in kid friendly language which gives younger Ss more independence
Is that a hint of sarcasm there? ;) https://t.co/jwFXwVcrti
who wants to spend time talking when a text will suffice?
True but texts often don't reveal the emotion or nuances.
I have been lurking at my first ! Some interesting opinions around 'connections':)
Hi Steph, jump in when ready, all voices as equal as one anothe.
Hi Steph, jump in when ready, all voices as equal as one anothe.
Don't set limits. You're limiting trust. Educate them about the perils before they set foot in the jungle.
I'll take it! Nice to hear something positive!
Well since the Aussies did so badly in the super rugby I'll cheer for you guys! But there's the 7s https://t.co/SPdPSLsyz9
I do.... but that's because I'm lonely...
Yes we all know Google is the main agent! 😃
Great point. Connections need to affirm student beliefs!
A6 Real questions and real life learning and being interested really interested in what they bring to the conference circle
But bitmojis! You're so right.
A6: GAFE - 'the' Google is a great source of connection, from docs to classroom to beyond... as is
not this time! Possible cynicism tinged with the need to always save time?
Does enable prompt relaying of key info.
Sorry my digital overload 2nights been fun https://t.co/aUI7fzeHXD
not this time! Possible cynicism tinged with the need to always save time?
A6 Blogger (need to be better at this), Hangouts (for mystery hangouts), twitter (getting back into that this week)
A5: Skype or GHO. Makes the experience so real. Then we move to VoiceThread
A6 Also - working in partners/groups almost all the time
Wow! i have connectEDness with tweetdeck tonight - it works well in chat and it seems to be more calming than using my phone?
A6 Twitter and gafe for us. Seesaw for connecting locally with each other and parents.
This has to become commonplace going forward!
yeah - and why get up and walk to the next room when you can text https://t.co/UFin92c8gG
who wants to spend time talking when a text will suffice?
"monitoring" is a dirty word at my place
A6: ATM it's email. Accessible to all and available when req'd. It's not the best, but works most times.
I use Google Classroom massively, wish I'd use Twitter more for students but they're not interested.
Matt Jorgensen for the win on tonight. Showcasing Office Mix for flipped vid
I honestly can't remember the last time my students did anything completely independently (oh wait, eAsttle)
Nice point David, are we harming our students with too easy connections?
ZX Spectrum 48K for me... Still have it!
Many Ts resist such a focus due to assessment fears!
School system of intranet, email, and something called talking
LOL! That's pure laziness! :D
A6: Twitter not an option yet. Getting there though. Working on it!
Classic, mine was a Commodore Vic 20!
There is much irony in what they think,,,
Wise and experienced! Thanks LOL.
A6: Office 365 collaboration tools like , breaking down the classroom walls!
Great chat guys. Gotta run sorry. Have a great evening. You're all awesome!
Sorry Stu - may have gotten off track as we've been 'connecting'
haha yes swing by and keep the juices flowing! Topic shift - Coding! to
Nice Trent, need to get Ts out of the way sometimes!
Other Ts or me? I certainly have. Loving it. Other Ts I work with, not so much (trying, that is)
See ya tmrw! You enjoying our gorgeous weather?! ;)
A6 dialogic learning, culture and ethos that promotes collaboration. It's not the tool it's the mindset
anyone using showbie? Thought I would ask the experts!!
I promise you will always get that from me! May not always like it tho...
is a great connection tool!
Thanks for another awesome chat ->> gotta fly and get set for - joining us tonight??
Always love it. More Ts need to transparent in their thinking and submissions!
Fair point, but Ts need to often change their perception of connections!
Great chat this evening, thanks everyone!
