#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
See you all Next Week #K12ArtChat posting more videos from our Fine Arts Departments Collaborative Presentation, Prism, from tonight! Leadership skills at its best 😁😁
#k12artchat A1a The second time I visited the LA County Museum of Natural History was amazing. I was an adult going with other adults. We recalled and reflected on our child vs adult perceptions.
A1, it would be my first visit with my high school students to the UCA gallery & getting to hold ancient Mayan pottery. I have a picture some where. #K12ArtChat
Trevor. K-5 art teacher from N.J. happy to be here tonight for a bit. can use this visual, illustrated by Peter Reynolds to help students explore artworks meaningfully. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A1 my most powerful museum visit was when I was 10 and job shadowed an Anthropologist. It turned into a summer internship of learning about dinosaurs. I had a pass for the summer to work closely with the dinosaur exhibits.
A1 I have had quite a few powerful museum visits. But to play off of another question I would have to say the Uffizzi where I saw La Primavera, it was so big. I studied it in art history but never put the dimensions together in my head. #K12ArtChat
A1-Visit to London, walked for hours through museum til the paintings magically began moving before my eyes. Rousseau's Surprise, Storm in the Jungle is a FAV from that visit! #k12artchat
A1 my first museum trip was with my Brownie troop into the big Twin Cities to see the Picasso retrospective after he died. Made a huge impact and ingnites my love of art history!#K12ArtChat
A1 Every year I takes a few classes to the Princeton University Art Museum. They are always my favorite days. Here is a video that documented one of our visits & shows how we make an Art & literacy connection: https://t.co/X2UK8CphxL#K12ArtChat
A1 My most post powerful museum visit was the Van Gogh Museum this summer. I have never before felt so connected to an artist! I have a profound respect for him now. He painted to survive. #k12artchat#artteachersabroad#artteachertravels
#k12artchat A2a I was heartened when I read this.. https://t.co/31dTYvnBPf .. seeing something that hadn’t been seen before. Travel gets us out of ruts we may not be aware of. The new gets us to pay more than casual or no attention.
#k12artchat A1 My best take away from my experiences as a child in museums is to have enough knowledge to know what you are looking at but allow individual exploration and discoveries.
A1 I have memories of going to the Cleveland museum w/ my parents, taking my own kids to Pgh Art museum, & last summer to Crystal Bridges. All great! #k12ArtChat
Love the #k12artchat questions tonight from Lombard, Illinois A1: grew up mesmerized by length of Monet Waterlilies at the Carnegie Museum and drawing the dinosaur bones during high school classes.
Yes, I remember about every other painting I thought "you were on an exam in college and you were on and exam etc....!" It was like the entire Gardner's Art Thru the Ages Renaissance secion in person #K12artchat
A1 I have had quite a few powerful museum visits. But to play off of another question I would have to say the Uffizzi where I saw La Primavera, it was so big. I studied it in art history but never put the dimensions together in my head. #K12ArtChat
A2 travel is about perspective taking. Developing empathy, making connections between self & the world. Traveling fuels the social/emotional development. When we travel away from safe spaces, we begin to find ourselves in the process. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A3a A few years ago I taught animation & multimedia production at a community college. My adventures as a young man provided anecdotes & perspectives that invited introspection by students. I think it’s less about the objects and more about a shared experience.
A2 traveling all over the planet as a kid gives me a different insight to teach about locations. I am able to share photos of me in different locations to tell the story. I actually shared a photo from Angkor Wat with a student from Cambodia #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A2 travel gives me the refresh/reboot I need every once and awhile to find my Mojo. There is nothing like seeing and responding to new work or masterpieces to inspire! This beauty from @crystalbridges I saw last has been shaping my #perspective conversations since!
A1 I loved my first trip to MoMA NYC! It was the first visit and on a free Friday. It was packet, loud, and people were playing games and meeting new people. So many who wouldn’t typically be there were, and all the amazing art was wonderful too. #K12ArtChat
A2: I always feel changed when I travel whether or not I did any official classes or PD. Existing outside of my comfort zone and exploring another culture deepens my connection to the world and also to myself as a person and as a professional. #k12artchat#artteachertravels
A3 our goal is to help all students to explore, find and share their voice. The more connected and aware we are to what is possible, the better we can support our students. #K12ArtChat
A2 Travel is learning, I find it refreshes me personally & I love exploring #art around the world & learning about the ways different people live #K12ArtChat
A2 every time we have a new art/culture experience we have more in our backpack to pull from and the more life experiences we have the more we can understand and connect with our Ss. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A4a Depth. Reading, according to my then 16 yo daughter, puts you in the head of the author. It can be a rich experience. But it’s imagined. You can’t easily get behind things. Ditto for smells. So I guess travel engages more senses & memory triggers for later..
A5: like many art teachers, I am tactile. I want to feel the work! Although you can’t actually touch art in galleries and museums, you can better sense the layers, time, and textures in a work that a photograph just cannot capture #k12artchat
Yes, it is one thing to share "book knowledge" but to bring in the real life knowledge and experiences. That is huge for our student's learning! #k12artchat
A3: They are inspired with what they see and empowered that they can do the same. Here's a pic of my students at the Museum of Modern Art in Busan, South Korea. #k12artchat
A3, Our Ss benefit from our travels because we bring those experiences back & share them. We help expand their minds through our own travel, which can encourage them to step out on their own adventures #K12ArtChat
A4 visiting a place gives you a memory... sounds, atmosphere, food, smells, etc always makes me think of #impressionists painting for us the feeling of standing there and then! #K12ArtChat
A2: I love showing my kids videos, books, pictures to bring them somewhere new on a budget, but that trip to a museum, gallery, or university once a year brings the work and experience to life #K12ArtChat
A4: A live experience is better than looking at photos. In the 20 years I spent in the army, I went to an art museum wherever I was stationed even though I wasn’t doing art at those times. I valued that experience a lot. #k12artchat
A4 the local people, history & culture that influence the architecture, landscape even the artwork inside expands on any art adventure beyond a book or Google image! #k12artchat
My same answer and sometimes you can touch and smell. Which adds to the perspective. I remember the Roman Baths in the UK didn't smell that great but it added to the experience! #k12ArtChat
A4. One of the most immediate thing that seeing an artwork in person does is give the viewer a sense of scale. Working with my friend and street artist, MOMO gave me a huge appreciation of this #K12ArtChat
A3 & A2:Totally read the questions backwards hahaha last post was about students... for teachers it brings new experiences that you can bring back to the classroom! #K12ArtChat
A3 Nothing opens up a students mind quite like travel- I’ve brought students to Spain, France, Italy, Morocco & of course NYC often & have have seen them learn & grow immensely! It’s usually a life-changing, positive experience #K12ArtChat
A2 I hope to inspire a love of travel and exploration in my art students with my stories: They LOVE hearing about Mona Lisa & are so impressed to hear that I have seen the real McCoy! #k12artchat
A4 actually walking the streets of Rome at 03:00, you get the smells and the sounds that cannot be recreated. When I worked for Raytheon in the early 90’s we tried to create VR environments but couldn’t bring in all the senses. #K12ArtChat
A5, The initial OMGee moment you have seeing the actual size of a painting even though you knew the dimensions before! Also seeing the brush marks or imperfections. #K12ArtChat
A5: scale, proportion, interacting with the piece is so meaningful. It brings a whole new perspective. It becomes ingrained in your memory in a new way than just knowing it exists! #K12ArtChat
A5: Seeing art in person allows the viewer to obtain a better feeling of the artwork. Getting a chance to see the artist speak is even more exciting. #k12artchat
A5 seeing a work in person will never substitute a photo or even @googlearts virtual visit... the depth alone, textures just can’t be captured ... I remember seeing a hair from a paintbrush in the Van Gogh exhibit @artinstitutechi IT GAVE ME CHILLS #VanGoghWasHere#K12ArtChat
#K12artchat A5 it’s important to bring in artifacts into the studio when you can’t go to the exhibits. It’s also important to explore your own parks for sculptures to see.
A6: My wife and I went to Paris last year and the Mona Lisa looks much different in person. It felt so underwhelming probably because it is much smaller than it appeared in photographs. #k12artchat
#K12artchat A5 it’s important to bring in artifacts into the studio when you can’t go to the exhibits. It’s also important to explore your own parks for sculptures to see.
A6: Kehinde Wiley’s work was always impressive, but seeing it in person at the Fort Worth Modern a few years ago was extraordinary! And, it was my kiddos first art museum visit 😍 #K12ArtChat
A5: scale, proportion, interacting with the piece is so meaningful. It brings a whole new perspective. It becomes ingrained in your memory in a new way than just knowing it exists! #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A5a That first year I lived in Washington, DC, arriving in the winter I didn’t do a lot of exploring. Old buildings basically. Come Spring, wow! That first time I went inside the Renwick Gallery.. it took me outside myself.

Q7: What on-site professional development opportunities have you participated in that you recommend? What did you like about the experience? #k12artchat
A7: NAEA conferences are always excellent. I also enjoyed the AP Studio Art training at SCAD last summer. I would like to expand my experiences an attend a professional painting workshop. I took a lot of ceramic workshops the last 4 years. #k12artchat
PART 3- My two Art 3 students, Alexis & Annika, tonight, demonstrating at our Fine Arts Departments Collab. Presentation, Prism, demoing their pottery skills by Stacking Two Thrown Pots to make ONE LARGE ONE @MLCHS_Principal@Richmondruss#K12ArtChat@MLCTitanNation@MLCHSBands
#k12artchat A6a In ’09 I was part of a UNLV team developing an online curriculum for DoDEA.. working with high school humanities teachers was eye opening. For 1 thing I hadn’t seen the referenced art. What made it wow was learning what it represented.
#k12artchat When I go to a museum it's a spiritual experience for me. I would prefer to explore and be lost in my own thoughts but I'd love more opportunities to see artist studios for my PD experiences.
A6 seeing Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg’s work in person was amazing. I also loved seeing the studio of Francis Bacon at the Irish museum of modern art. Inspiring. #K12ArtChat
A5 Many #art works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated due to scale, texture, or context- Michelangelo, Edward Hopper, Marilyn Minter, Grant Wood, Leonardo DaVinci, Judy Chicago, Salvador Dali, all benefit from closer inspection! #K12ArtChat
A6, I went to the Egyptian exhibit at the Arkansas Art cent & was amazed by some of the items displayed. I a gold chain dress & it intricacy was so stunning. An easy make with today’s advancements, but it was made in Ancient Egypt! #K12ArtChat
Yes! When I saw the Wiley at the Seattle Art Museum last year, I was totally blown away. I couldn't believe how big and clear and bold it was. #K12ArtChat
Yes! I love to put myself into the shoes of the people making it. Connects you to the artist and culture seeing the physical handiwork of a person from long ago. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A7a Any of the #EdCamps I’ve travelled to. Like that first one, #EdCampWestTexas.. being invited to share a learning experience I had in ’69 and drawing parallels to current day students. Being welcomed was it.. I’m not a K-12 teacher.
#k12artchat Bonus- bucket list is to go to a chalet with a bunch of artists and create art for a summer. Be with a group of creatives and just make and explore. Full immersion.
A1b: I wanted to add that I saw a Frida Kahlo exhibit in El Paso while I was in the army and it was amazing - this would be my 2nd favorite art experience #k12artchat
PART 4- My two Art 3 students, Alexis & Annika, tonight demoing at our Fine Arts Departments Collab. Presentation, Prism, their pottery skills in front of a capacity crowd. @MLCHS_Principal@Richmondruss#K12ArtChat@MLCTitanNation@MLCHSBands Creativity takes Courage - H.Matisse

I enjoyed hosting my first #K12ArtChat! That was fun! Thanks for participating and thanks to @Artguy76 and @GrundlerArt for all of your amazing work bringing together these inspiring teachers! <3
Spain is on my list too. I was able to go last year for a 24 hour layover in Madrid. I saw Guernica, Third of May, and Garden of Earthly Delights and ate 16 ham sandwiches in that short period. Not enough. Not enough art and not enough sandwiches. #K12ArtChat
Ooh me too! I watched Secret Life of Walter Mitty recently, and I've been obsessed with going to Iceland since. Plane tickets there are actually pretty reasonable! I've checked a few too many times. #K12ArtChat
