Join us for our district's monthly twitter chat focusing on "Integrating the Arts" on February 1st from 7-8 pm. Come and chat about how to integrate music, art, and other specialized areas into your classroom to build learning across the content areas!
A1. Last year I used @ClassDojo with my 6th graders. This year I'm using a money system--which is a lot of fun disguised as behavior management and a way to work on functional goals for some of my students! #CCSEdChat
In my Tech of Instruction class we learned about ClassDojo. It looks like such a useful tool! I have also been learning about subtle techniques for classroom management such as eye contact, proximity, etc. #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat A2 at our school our admin is huge into positive reinforcement for acts of kindness. Also doing the right thing is rewarded with different incentives.
A2: Schoolwide: We have started the House Point System, so classes have to work together to earn House Points. Classroom: Specifically with 1st grade, we've been doing mindfulness exercises to help us transition to music. #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat A2- Test and Quiz grade corrections are connected with good behavior in the class room. When desired behavior levels are reached - computer time is extended and used for remediation helping both the students grade and advanced understanding of technology.
A2. I would like to reinforce good behavior in my classroom by offering rewards that still help my students learn. Maybe they could get to pick out the next book we are going to read or suggest a (topic related) science experiment. #CCSEdChat
A2. With both my @ClassDojo I used last year and the money system this year, they use either their point or "Ms. Smith's Class Cash" to purchase different activities to do on celebration days. #CCSEdChat
A2, pt 2. @MaxAbbottMiddle is using a "growl card" incentive this year. Classrooms earn/collect these cards when the room is demonstrating good behavior/high levels of engagement. These cards can be traded in for different rewards! #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat Many teachers at our school use class dojo. Resource teachers use it as a weekly tracker for their classes and the children love it. Students love to see their progress on the smartboard and how many points they have earned.
A3. Utilize PowerSchool daily. Encourage Students to use PS app to get grades instantly. Utilize Student ccs email often for assignment turn in and feedback. #CCSEdChat
A3. With Dojo, the program does all the tracking for you! You can even export individual students' data, which can be super helpful for tracking behavior interventions! #CCSEdChat
A3. As @twkellyMRES mentioned, @ClassDojo is a great classroom management tool! I really like how easy it is to track behaviors and send behavior reports. #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat A3 - Power School is used to track students weekly. Students are required to track assignments and grades using this aspect of technology. This serves to motivate and promote technology throughout the class and school.
A4. Yes. I have only taught HS. I have a 4th Grade and PreK @CumberlandCoSch student at home. I would not know how to respond to a middle school age student right now. #CCSEdChat
A4. Absolutely! You want the system to be age appropriate, otherwise there will be no extrinsic motivation for the students. But I also don't think you need to reinvent the wheel; you can take similar models and match them to your age group! #CCSEdChat
A4: For my classes, I use the same system with variations for the different age groups. My younger students live stickers and my claw machine, my older students love their earned social time. #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat A4 - Yes - different age groups are motivated by different stimulus. Older students will not respond favorably to reinforcement deemed “ below their level of ability “ .
A4. I don't yet have much experience in the classroom, but I would say yes. Younger Ss would most likely react to more to things like class store and house points, whereas older Ss will be more motivated by extra credit. All Ss need verbal praise, though. #CCSEdChat
A5: Our school expectations are : I am Respectful and Kind, I am Safe, I am Responsible, I am Prepared. They are stated positively and we say it as a pledge in the morning #CCSEdChat
#CCSEdChat A5 - Do not speak out of turn - Raise your hand and wait to be called on— rules on behavior such as this promote a respectful class room and positively reinforce respect between students in all areas of the school.
A5. If a teacher encourages his/her students to be a certain kind of person and leads by example, then the students will want to follow. A teacher should model a kind person that cares about others and respects other people's ideas. #CCSEdChat
Q6. I would love to work at a school that employs the mentor system. I think that it can be so helpful to both the older student and younger student. #CCSEdChat
#A5 The most helpful rules tell a student how they are to behave, not how they shouldn't behave. For example, "We will keep our hands to ourselves" rather than, "We don't touch your friends." #CCSEdChat
A6: We have two! We utilize Check-In/Check-Out that pairs students with a teacher. We also have Dazzling Stars, a mentoring program for 5th grade girls. We are starting a boys program soon! #CCSEdChat
A7. Yes. If I am not seeing a change with a positive behavior system in place, then I will revise my plan until I see the results that benefit my student. #CCSEdChat
A7. I think the biggest positive change is seeing the shift from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation--moving from wanting to do good for rewards to wanting to do good for themselves. One of my fav parts of teaching multiple grades is being able to see that shift in Ss! #CCSEdChat
A7: Being consistent and positive can see significant changes in behavior. Even on days where it feels like it's not working, students do know their expectations. #CCSEdChat
