Tonight we are glad to have @AHCnohaze leading us in a very important #TXHSFBCHAT regarding how we can recognize and help prevent Hazing and Bullying in our programs and schools. #TXHSFBCHAT
Dennis Goodwin of @AHCnohaze presents to High School Football teams year round to help educate and spread this message of Anti-Hazing. Let's check in and welcome Dennis to #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: To me the difference is bullying usually involves singling out an individual at any time and bullying them as a means to exclude them. While Hazing is including people by having them “earn” a way into a team etc. bullying=excluding hazing is about including. #TXHSFBCHAT
The way I understand it:
Hazing is a way to bring others into a group, but by unnecessary means.
While bullying is a way to exclude others from a group by unnecessary means.
Both unnecessary, but seem to have different motivations.
A1: I think hazing affects a group of people while bullying is generally one individual. Hazing would be similar to "freshmen or sophmores, carry in our equipment" . Bullying is targeting a single person in most cases #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: unfortunately I believe it happens in almost every school across the country in some form or fashion. Cyberbullying is becoming alarmingly common, especially among middle school students. #txhsfbchat
Absolutely. Especially with the prevalence of anonymous apps like YikYak and Whisper. People feel brave when they think there are no consequences. Unfortunately I have seen the consequences of these apps. Not good #TXHSFBCHAT
Being a teacher, I'm not totally surprised by these stats, which is sad. It's not always in plain sight with cellphones and social media. We have to watch our kids for the signs #TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT The main reason these reports are coming out they Everyone has a camera in their pocket
Unfortunately today as an educator and coach everyone is watching
A2. Yupppp. Everywhere. It may not be seen. We, as coaches, have to open our eyes more. It’s not always X’s and O’s. We’re here to mold these young men. Build them up. #TXHSFBCHAT If we spot it, it needs to be fixed right away.
By definition, yes hazing happens no matter how hard coaches police it. Kids will find a way to have a teammate prove themselves in a non football or sport aspect. We all want our kids in a healthy environment, so looking for signs is key! #TXHSFBCHAT
Tough to pick...Coaches being involved may be the most disheartening to me. As someone who works to protect and help my kids, I cannot relate or understand how someone in my same position would treat a kid like that #TXHSFBCHAT
a3: biggest thing is educating them on why what they are doing is wrong. there are a lot of reasons why a kid can convince themselves that they are right in their mind. #txhsfbchat
A3) Coaches, Parents, Students. We all have the power and responsibility to stop hazing. Start by reporting it and addressing the issue immediately. If you ignore it, you promote it.
#TXHSFBCHAT#txhsfbchat
A3: my opinion that has a lot to do with the culture that has been built within the program. The players hazing can stop but I do think coaches used to turn a blind eye years ago. Much less prevalent now in my opinion.
#TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT. By the way these statistics were done at the University of Maine Orono back in 2006 (40K students) both HS and college
I am working on updating them
Treat every case seriously and make sure you are being as proactive as possible.
Education, Conversations, and kids feeling safe to come and talk to coaches.
#TXHSFBCHAT
Honesty is the only real answer here. If something is happening that isn’t right, report it immediately and let the correct people know! Silence is deadly! #TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT I see the words educate hear a lot. I also believe we need to change the culture and have our student athletes and coaches etc promote to everyone to Speak Up and report the Hazing . The students that Report the Hazing should be the heroes
A4: Boomerang affect: Pushback from Team Members, Parents, colleagues etc.
You need to stay Strong on Your Decision. If people want to know why, there are 45 States that have Anti Hazing Laws.
You as a coach could lose your job if you do not report it. #TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT. I call it the boomerang effect due sometimes you make a decision and it will go with current student athletes, alumni, colleagues etc. Stand up for the Right Thing
A5: Be proactive! Take every mention seriously and investigate. Build up the confidence in your players so when they See Something, they Say Something #TXHSFBCHAT

A5) Address anti-hazing policy during parent meeting and emphasize it during team meetings. Have different methods of reporting such as online, text or in-person. Display the policy in your lockeroom where it can be seen. And don't ignore an outcry.
